[cobirds] Cordilleran Flycatcher/in Centennial, Arapahoe Cty

2023-06-19 Thread 'Carol Blackard' via Colorado Birds
Hello,
The bird I wrote in about yesyerday returned just now to our neighbors’ back
yard across the street. I only heard it singing this time. I looked on Cornell
website and now feel it is a Cordilleran Flycatcher. The song on Cornell’s site
is identical and I see light outer tail feathers pictured on the singing video
that are exactly what I saw yesterday.
So, I gonna count as a new yard bird.

I would love it if it decided to nest under our neighbors’ deck.

Re: [cobirds] Acadian Flycatcher update

2023-05-23 Thread Peter Gent
All,

MANY CONGRATULATIONS to Brandon for finding the Acadian Flycatcher
yesterday: not an easy identification. Thanks also for letting everyone on
Cobirds know promptly, and staying around for several hours helping other
people to see the bird. This is the second time this species has been
recorded in Colorado, and guess who found the first record. Yes, Brandon
found the bird which was seen at Van's Grove, which is NW of John Martin
Res, on 12 May 2009: that bird only stayed for one day. Reports and photos
of that bird by Brandon, Joey Kellner and Bill Maynard can be seen at
https://cobrc.org/Reports/SpeciesDetail.aspx?id=265

Cheers, Peter Gent.

COBirders,
This morning what is presumably a returning bird from the pair that bred last

successful breeders at this location again.
On Wednesday on private property in Baca County, there was a male Vermilion. It

[cobirds] Cordilleran Flycatcher, Arapahoe Co.

2022-06-30 Thread 'Andrews Robert' via Colorado Birds

Hello all,

An addition to the posts about Cordilleran Flycatcher on the plains. After I
arrived back in Colorado from Africa in late May, I stayed with friends in
Centennial for about three weeks. The house is adjacent to the Big Dry Creek
Trail between E. Easter Ave. and E. Dry Creek Rd. in Centennial. On June 15, I
was surprised to hear a Cordilleran Flycatcher singing and calling at the
house. It was there for about 30 minutes and then either left or fell silent.
That was the only day in the three weeks I heard it either at the house or on
my numerous walks on the Big Dry Creek trail, so the bird did not seem to be
resident.

refound east of there at (39.543111, -105.051724). It was mainly picking
insects off the surface of the water. If you want to pursue, I suggest
starting near the Sandspit then walking east along the water, watching for

Re: [cobirds] Gray Flycatcher ID

2020-04-27 Thread David Tønnessen
I agree with most everything Christian said. I have also witnessed birders call
empids Gray Flycatchers based on a downward tail flicking, but I think the
confusion is inexperience with empids and the lack of clarification when this
field mark is being taught. All empids flick their tails downward, only Gray is
special for dipping its tail BEFORE flicking it upwards. It can be a hard
judgement call since this is a fast movement and other species like Dusky will
flick upwards only slightly before a more significant and noticeable downward
movement. In further agreement, there are other marks that should used to
distinguish Gray as well; pale gray appearance, smooth round/flat head shape,
long thin bill with bright lower mandible, very faint eye-ring. If you're not
confident using a combination of these marks, leave the flycatcher at empid sp.

Re: [cobirds] Gray Flycatcher ID

2020-04-26 Thread Christian Nunes
Gray Flycatcher is the expected Empidonax anywhere in Colorado in April. They
are commonly found up and down the Front Range as migrants, as well as on their
breeding grounds in Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands.

A quick eBird search brought up three recent checklists with photos of
purported Gray Flycatchers from the Denver Metro area:

https://ebird.org/checklist/S67607413
https://ebird.org/checklist/S67611544
https://ebird.org/checklist/S67748261

Like Norm, I find the field mark of downward tail wagging to be overly
emphasized and often confounded by birders. The field mark that I find to be
most reliable is the unique bill shape of Gray Flycatcher, being longer and
with a shallower depth than other Empids, and having a distinct awl-shaped
lower mandible. The lower mandible is always a nice clean orange color with a
contrasting dark tip. Combine the bill shape/color with a round head and a bold
pale lore, and then maybe a behavioral clue like tail dipping. Using this as
guidance, it's clear that all reports of Gray Flycatcher in the Denver Metro
area this year are 100% accurate.

I have seen several posts on Ebird for gray flycatcher. The ones with photos
are not convincing for gray flycatcher. The id seems to be based on downward
tail flicking. This may be the worst field mark for empids, They all flick
their tails down. About the only thing that can be said with certainty is if
they flick their tails up, they are probably not gray.

Hey COBirders,

Slow again for banding at Clear Spring Ranch this morning, but the unusual bird
for the day was an adult Least Flycatcher.
Again, I've only caught 3 of this species in the fall at CSR (since 2012), and
this was the earliest by a full two weeks.

But it is DEAD along the Fountain Creek corridor. I’m not even seeing any big
birds fly overhead. No jays, crows, blackbirds, hawks, swallows, orioles, and
few warblers or flycatchers
compared to other Augusts. This has been the unusual year.

[cobirds] Least Flycatcher singing at Lory State Park (LARIMER)

2019-06-14 Thread John Shenot
For the second year in a row I've observed a Least Flycatcher singing on
the Well Gulch Trail in Lory State Park in June. Same location as last
year; possibly or probably the same individual. Near interpretive sign post
#5, south of the trail. His singing was relentless this morning. He seems
to be a courageous or confused fellow, or both. I alternately admire and
feel sorry for him given the low odds of successfully finding a mate in
this location. I wish I had such pluck and determination.

[cobirds] Least Flycatcher, CSR, El Paso Co, Sun.

2019-05-26 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

Quiet morning at Clear Spring Ranch with the better weather. I only saw a few
migrants.

Best were a variety of flycatchers that dropped in:
Least Flycatcher (imm)
Willow Flycatcher (imm)
Western Wood Pewee (ad F)
Olive-sided Flycatcher (imm). My first banded at CSR, and only the 2nd I’ve
seen in the hand. They usually stay up pretty high.

Other than that, mostly imm Yellow Warblers, late to the party, and recaps from
earlier this week.

Have a good weekend,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher continues - Arapahoe

2019-05-01 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, I heard and briefly saw the Gray Flycatcher that arrived in
my yard yesterday. (This is western Centennial, Arapahoe County.) It's
ranging a bit farther today than yesterday, and it's call seems to be
coming from neighbor's yards more often than mine. The Orange-crowned
Warbler also continued. Many (7ish) very noisy Blue Jays have been
dominating the yard for the past two days. This is fairly unusual for my
yard, but it's a welcome thing. Love those birds...

I also walked the Big Dry Creek Trail in Centennial this morning. Spotted
Towhees are always numerous there. Two pairs seem to have set up -- or are
trying to set up -- territories a bit too close to each other, as one male
kept "visiting" the other and the other's apparent mate. Nothing too
dramatic transpired, but it was interesting to watch nonetheless. A Hermit
Thrush, Pine Siskin, and Yellow-rumped Warbler were notable spring
visitors.

No sign of the Cassin's Vireo that visited my yard yesterday. It had flown
in the general direction of the Big Dry Creek yesterday, and I'd hope to
see it again. Alas.

At Streets of Southglenn (a shopping center at Arapahoe & University), I
noted an absence of four young ravens at a nest on a big box store sign. A
week or so ago, they seemed nearly ready to fledge, hopping around and
flapping their wings. Today, they were gone, though I suspect they'll
continue to linger around the shopping center for a while. Love those
birds, too. Glad something as charismatic as ravens can make that sea of
pavement home.

[cobirds] Cordilleran Flycatcher, Common Nighthawks - Centennial (Arapahoe)

2018-05-28 Thread Jared Del Rosso
Last night (5/27), I heard then spotted two Common Nighthawks over my west
Centennial home (Arapahoe). The birds appeared northbound, until they hit a
wall of wind that they couldn't break. When I last saw them, they looked
like they were being pushed southeast.

This morning, while dog walking, I heard the Cordilleran Flycatcher still
calling from the Little Dry Creek, near the High Line Canal Trail, along
East Orchard Rd. I previously heard & saw the bird last Thursday (5/24).

[cobirds] Cordilleran Flycatcher - Centennial (Arapahoe)

2018-05-24 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, I walked my dogs along the High Line Canal / Little Dry Creek
nexus in Centennial (around E. Orchard & S. Colorado). Lots of House Wrens
& Broad-tailed Hummers. We also had a singing Black-headed Grosbeak. And a
Cordilleran Flycatcher, my first in Arapahoe Co., was calling from along
the creek, just off the canal.

The canal is increasingly under water, as Denver Water released water three
or four days ago. It looked to me like this stretch of the canal was the
front edge of the water flow -- as the water got deeper the farther west I
walked on the trail. Mallards seemed happy about this.

Hi CObirders
I'm pleased to inform that the El Paso Vermilion Flycatcher continues at the

astonished to find it still present, given the strong north winds.

2018-04-02 Thread hikerhodges
All,

The stunning flycatcher was seen at 8 a.m. this morning by a few of us. It
was still there at 10:30 when I stopped by.
The entire time I saw was there, the bird was behind the fire station in
the lot - on a fence, cholla or tree. It was not scared off by 3 large,
noisy commercial trucks that spent some time there.
Thanks again, Bill Kosar.

Also at the fire station were a Curve-billed Thrasher, two Say's Phoebe's,
and two singing Cassin's Sparrows.

If you head to Chico, the banding station was very quiet, but the road into
the station boasted 4 Sage Thrashers and a few Scaled Quail.

The prairie dog town at Hanover and DeGroot had 4 Burrowing Owls.

Good birding,
Linda

After a thorough search of the area east of Carolyn Armstrong Fishing
Access, the Vermilion Flycatcher was not spotted..so far today. I covered
the hillside to the east all the way to Smoky Hill Parking lot.
I searched from about 1030 to 1230. There was a breeze from the north and
it was 50 degrees. It was fairly "buggy", but no flycatcher in sight. I
did, however, come upon a lone Sage Thrasher.

2017-09-04 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

It was my busiest banding day this season at Clear Spring Ranch, despite the
early winds, heat, and smoke. Very Dry right now.
Highlights were an ad Least Flycatcher, a juv Willow Flycatcher, an ad
Clay-Colored Sparrow, a late Yellow Warbler (I’ve only had 5 after this date in
5 seasons), a couple Wilson’s Warblers, Yellowthroats, and catbirds, and a pile
of Chipping Sparrows. 43 birds banded today.

Yellow Warblers are about done, like I said, I had a Lazuli Bunting juv f (only
5 after this date also), Lincoln’s Sparrows are starting to arrive in numbers,
and I had my first Gambell’s White-crowned Sparrow (juv) yesterday. Some birds
are finishing, some are just starting migration!

Have a good Labor Day,

[cobirds] Cordilleran Flycatcher ,Jefferson County

2017-06-29 Thread Tina Jones
Hi all,

After reading Karen's and David's posts about Cordilleran nest dates I
remembered 2, different things. One, the Cordilleran Flycatchers which nested
at a cabin I used to visit, made a nest under the cabin roof on a ledge. This
cabin elevation was around 8200 feet. The nest was usually finished close to
July 10-13. This was Lodgepole Pine Habitat.

Number two, I had a pair of Cordilleran nest in 2015, under the roof ledge of
my HOUSE, in Littleton. I was shocked when I heard the birds calling back and
forth in my backyard the time of June 15th. I got to watch the Female take
shredded bark off of one of my trees, and then she placed it under the house
ledge on top of a water drain spout. The nest was pretty much finished by June
20. I then had my bad fall and was away from the house for 2, weeks. When I got
back to my house, the Flycatchers were no where to be seen. I asked my gardener
in mid August if she could climb my ladder to see if there was anything in the
nest. To my surprise, she said there were 2 eggs. Her photo showed them to be
Cordilleran Flycatcher eggs.

2015 was a crazy summer and I forgot to post the above info. Sorry! This
elevation seems pretty LOW to me for Cordilleran. I am one block away from
Denver County , close to Fort Logan Cemetary. I do not know what happened to
the Flycatchers. I have 1 Cooper's Hawk which spends every day in my yard [in
the summer] kak, kak,, kaking, at the Great Horned Owls which reside in my
yard.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Least Flycatcher, RMNP, Larimer Co

2017-06-20 Thread Bob Righter
Hi

At 11:00 am while walking from the trail head on the east side of Moraine Park
at about 1 to 2/10ths of a mile I heard "chebeck, chebeck, chebeck..." that
continued for 10 minutes. The empid was calling from a Lodgepole tree limb
about 20 feet from the ground that was adjacent to the path. Viewing the empid
from about 20 feet I first noticed how the underneath appeared noticeable light
in color, particularly after just viewing a Dusky Flycatcher that appeared a
grayish dusky undertone. Viewing from the side the wings appeared blackish with
noticeable light-colored wing-bars and the face showed a distinct eye-ring. The
bill was short and the tail was medium length and narrow. The general habitat
was Lodgepole Pine and Alder-Willow near the wetlands, certainly an odd
location for a Least. If anyone is interested I have a rather scratchy IPhone
recording that I'll figure out how to send

[cobirds] Gray flycatcher and American redstart East CU Campus, Boulder

2017-05-28 Thread David Ely
Good afternoon,

This morning I saw a gray flycatcher and a first summer male American
redstart along Boulder Creek as accessed from the east CU campus near the
Space Science building. Both birds were quite a ways west (upstream) from
the normal sweet spot. My best advice to search for these birds, if
interested, is to walk west along the paved path to Prentup Field. When
you see the scoreboard on the north fenceline, exit the paved path and get
as close to the creek as possible. Both birds were in this general area.
The redstart was especially fond of the area on the north side of the creek
near a chain-link enclosure that had a prominent yellow pipe in it. This
is where I first saw and heard the bird singing, but it seemed to move
upstream a bit and further north off the water after my initial sighting.

[cobirds] Alder Flycatcher #2,3, CSR, El Paso Co, Monday

2017-05-22 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

Today was a flycatcher day again at Clear Spring Ranch banding. I opened after
the rain passed, about 45 minutes late, and didn’t expect much. It seems the
rain knocked down a lot of birds, as I caught MANY that were overloaded with
fat, like they had expected to get further along.

Today was “Get to Know Your Traill’s Flycatchers Day”. TWO Alder Flycatchers
were banded (after an FOS ALFL yesterday), and FOUR more Willow Flycatchers,
(two yesterday). These weren’t calling, but were ID’d by measuring how
Primaries 9 and 10 compare to the other outer primaries, in the hand. The ALFL
MAY have had a slightly longer Wing to Tail aspect, but I wouldn’t have been
able to tell otherwise.

In addition 2 W Wood-pewees, and FOUR more Dusky Flycatchers. I usually get 5-6
flycatchers per spring. Again, this year is different!

Also banded: 55 total birds-
Yellow Warbler 12
Com Yellowthroat 3
MacGillivray’s Warbler 2
YB Chat - 6
N Waterthrush (same bird banded 5/19, still hanging around)
Swainson’s Thrush
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow
Lincoln’s Sparrow 5
Song Sparrow 2
Black-headed Grosbeak (ad M)
Lazuli Bunting 2
Indigo Bunting (ad F)
Bullock’s Oriole 3

Not bad for a day I thought would be a washout. #2 day for numbers this spring.
(#1 for Flycatchers!)

Good birding,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher Skunk Canyon Boulder County

2017-05-14 Thread Luke Pheneger
Hi all,

Sorry for the late report but during the Boulder Audubon Teen Naturalist
bird and butterfly survey at Skunk Canyon today at about 10:30am, Aidan
Coohill spotted, and I identified a GRAY FLYCATCHER about 1.5 miles up the
trail. The bird was flicking its' tail and vocalizing about 20 feet down
the side of the trail in a dead taller shrub. Also at the Canyon was a
WILLOW FLYCATCHER, a high count of VIRGINIA's WARBLERS at 13; they started
singing at 10:45 and completely stopped at 11:30, only getting visuals on
2, and a ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAK singing.

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher fallout in Canon City, Fremont Co. 4/29

2017-04-30 Thread Brandon
Yesterday, three of us saw an amazing number of Gray Flycatchers, pushed
down to Canon City, by the weather. We ended up counting 27 Gray
Flycatchers, seen from 4 different locations in Canon City. This species
breeds in the pinyon juniper woodlands of Fremont County, though all of the
27 we saw yesterday, we migrating birds along or near the Arkansas River.
Most birds were along the Canon City Riverwalk, between Sells and
Raynolds. Other species that were seen in large numbers in Canon City
yesterday, because of the weather, were: Western and Mountain Bluebirds,
Say's Phoebes (also a few Black and Eastern Phoebes as well), American
Pipits, and swallows. The only warblers, were Yellow-rumped, a few
Orange-crowned, and one male Common Yellowthroat. We saw both Hermit and
Swainson's Thrushes, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, a Dusky Flycatcher, two Lazuli
Buntings, Evening Grosbeaks, and variety of sparrows (Chipping, Brewer's,
Lark, White-crowned, and two Black-throated).

The water bird highlights were some shorebirds, including Semipalmated,
Western, and Least Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers, Willet, Greater and
Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers, and Killdeer. Also,
large number of White-faced Ibis, and a couple Snowy Egrets.

Probably the best birds of the day, were a Caspian Tern in Florence and
four Broad-winged Hawks along the Canon City Riverwalk.

A really fun day of birding in Fremont County yesterday. The weather was
much better there, then what we would have encountered in SE Colorado,
where were planning to be this weekend.

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher Lee Martinez Park/Larimer

2017-04-28 Thread Rob Sparks
Today while birding on bike on my way to work I had a Gray Flycatcher
pumping it's tail downward. The Gray Flycatcher was 20 feet east of the Lee
Martinez link trail and Poudre Bike Trail intersection on the north side of
the trail. There also seemed to be an influx of
Yellow-rumped Warblers of both races.
On another note I have been observing a Bushtit nest by the Museum of
Discovery that is completed and ready for action.

[cobirds] Empidonax flycatcher in Pueblo 4/20

2017-04-20 Thread Brandon
I got good looks at an empidonax flycatcher in the Olive Marsh in
Pueblo this morning. Unfortunately it disappeared before I could take
any photos. The bird looked fine for a Western type flycatcher, very
nice tear drop eye ring, greenish black, yellow underparts, tail
moving up word. Given this early date and the bird being on the
plains, I wonder if the bird was a Pacific Slope Flycatcher, and not a
Cordilleran Flycatcher. I typically don't think Cordilleran
Flycatchers are very early migrants returning back to Colorado. Of
course, the limited time I saw the bird, it didn't make any noise.
Since Cordilleran and Pacific Slope Flycatchers looks the same, and
may even be the same species, we'll likely never really know.

I talked to the home owner. He last saw the flycatcher day before yesterday. He
showed me great photos of the male Vermillion Flycatcher on his backyard chain

Best to park on S Salida Way south of Iliff and look west to the first 4 houses

[cobirds] Alder Flycatcher, CSR, El Paso Co., Thurs

2016-05-27 Thread Steve Brown
Hey COBirders,

Bird-of-the-Day yesterday at Clear Spring Ranch was a Second-year Alder
Flycatcher, banded.
It didn't call, and I don't pretend I could separate it in the field from the
more expected Willow Flycatcher, but a series of precise primary feather
comparisons consistently indicated Alder.
Photos available if you are interested.

It was a productive morning, (3rd busiest day this season) with an arrival of
more locally-breeding species, but especially late-arriving, second-year female
birds, looking pretty bedraggled in their yet-to-be-replaced plumages. Included
were Com Yellowthroat (9), Yellow Warbler (4), Wilson's Warbler (2),
MacGillivray's Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Gray Catbird, Swainson's Thrush,
and caught, but unbanded, male Black-chinned and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds.

Since I'm writing thus at 6 a.m., you can tell the forecast today is not
conducive to operating nets - Rain and Strong Winds. A good day for data
reporting!

[cobirds] Alder Flycatcher - Loveland, Larimer Co

2016-05-21 Thread David Wade
Greetings Birders,

I am sheepishly reporting that I saw and heard an Alder Flycatcher at the
Morrey Wildlife Reserve in Loveland today. Sheepishly because I didn't
realize I was looking at one when it happened. I spotted a flycatcher with
a white throat, moderate primary projection and the general shape, size,
and color of a Trails Flycatcher. Because Willow is the expected one here
in N Colorado, that's what I thought it was. Then, as I was looking at it
thru the bino's it belted out a little chippy brri sound. I thought it
sounded like a miniature Robin. Despite seeing it not give the wit call of
a Willow, that's what I thought it was and moved on in my merry birding
way. It wasn't until I saw a Dusky Flycatcher and it reminded me that
Willow gives a wit call and not the brri that I heard. I quickly returned
to where I saw it but couldn't relocate it. I checked xenocanto when I got
home and confirmed the Alder's call there. It was in the understory of a
group of large cottonwoods directly west of the putting green of the
nearby golf course.

In Fort Collins, I saw a Bobolink at Reservoir Ridge Natural Area today
too. This marks the third year in a row that I have seen them there.

[cobirds] Myiarchus flycatcher, Roxborough SP

2015-11-18 Thread Scott Somershoe
Passing along some info. Peter Pereira posted a photo to a Cornell Bird
Facebook page asking for ID of a Myiarchus flycatcher from Roxborough SP,
Douglas Co., and the photo was taken yesterday (11/17/15). Looks more
brown-crested than ash-throated (because of back color), but there's just
one photo available so far and it is fairly small, even on a large monitor.
I'm not saying what it is from this one little image!

We don't know where the bird was actually found, but the bird was perched
in a juniper with snow on it. I guess this could be brown-crested from
Chatfield Botanical Gardens from a few weeks ago, but who knows. Birds

Hi COBirders,

I re-opened my banding station at CSR last week, mostly to monitor migrating
Yellow Warblers.
Numbers have been mostly small so far, and I've mostly been banding a variety

Warblers so far.

The past few days there have been more migrants showing up, including an adult

I'll post when I get interesting birds, and plan to operate most of the fall.

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher carrying food in Red Canyon Park north of Canon City tonight

2015-07-21 Thread SeEttaM .
I drove up to Red Canyon Park about 20 min north of Canon City this
evening. I spotted several Gray Flycatchers but they were quite shy,
likely still with nestlings or fledglings they are taking care of. I found
one carrying food, looked to be a dragonfly. It perched high on top of a
juniper and though I walked more than 50 feet away it stayed put,
apparently not going to feed it's young with me in the area so I left and
did not see if it has fledglings or babies in the nest. It could be either
as they may be having a second nesting since there are a lot of insects to
feed young due to very rainy year.

Of note were several Lazuli Buntings singing near the entrance to the park
as well as at least one Blue Grosbeak. More Lazuli Buntings were singing
near Four Mile Creek just a short distance from the park. Also I spotted a
likely pair of Evening Grosbeak (adult birds perched next to each other
during breeding season) in the park.

I have uploaded pics of the Gray Flycatcher, a singing Lazuli Bunting and
an Evening Grosbeak onto my Birds and Nature blog.

[cobirds] Willow Flycatcher at Boulder Rez

2015-05-26 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I took my dog for a swim on the north end of the Boulder Reservoir
yesterday (Monday) and we heard a Willow Flycatcher singing in, well, the
willows, along with a Yellow Warbler. There were 4 Great Egrets snoozing on
the NW shore and Vesper Sparrows singing in the pastures.

The Red-tailed Hawks that nested in the tree with all the Great Blue Herons
(north of the reservoir on N 55th) were feeding 3 hungry chicks. The
herons seem unperturbed by their presence in their rookery.

My backyard in west Longmont saw several migrants this weekend, including
Brewer's and Clay Colored Sparrows and a House Wren.

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher still at Ryssby Church, Boulder

2015-05-21 Thread 'ronbco' via Colorado Birds
Thanks to David Dowell for reporting this on May 11. I refound it in the
north east region of the church grounds. I was silent, but not shy. The eye
ring is very slim, wing bars evident, and the tail dipping was, um,
tell-tale.

[cobirds] PIRATIC FLYCATCHER in Western Kansas 5/8

2015-05-08 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
There appears to be a PIRATIC FLYCATCHER at Scott Lake State Park, in Western
Kansas.  This is about 2.5 hours (137 miles from Lamar), since a lot of birders
will be in Lamar over the weekend, this might be a good detour.  The bird was
seen on the north side of the lake, right after the waterfall, and just before
you drive over the creek.  It was in some cottonwoods/willows. Photos are on
the ABA Rare Bird Alert facebook page.

[cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher in Pueblo 4/5

2015-04-05 Thread Brandon K. Percival
The last location of the male Vermilion Flycatcher, was west of the Cottonwood
Picnic Area, along the Arkansas River, between this parking lot and road bridge
(this is east/below Pueblo Reservoir dam), Pueblo County.  It on both sides of
the river, and seen by several people from the road bridge looking east.  The
bird was first found by Pearle Sandstorm-Smith and Clif Smith.  Several of us
searched for hours in the heat, and couldn't find it, Joy and Richard Lake,
re-found it from the road bridge.  There is a territorial singing Eastern
Phoebe under this bridge, which did chase the Vermilion Flycatcher a couple of
times.  I'll try to post tomorrow as early as possible, if it is still present.

[cobirds] Vermilion Flycatcher in San Luis Valley

2014-04-09 Thread cougar
Hi all:

Exciting bird has been found between Del Norte and South Fork. An adult male
Vermilion Flycatcher has been seen at Ann Cummings place near the Rio Grande.
If you wish to see this bird you must get permission first. Call Ann at 719
849-1750 and make arrangements. Directions to her place: From Hwy 160 between
Del Norte and South Fork, take Hanna Lane north across the Rio Grande River.
When you come to the T (Cty Rd 15), turn west (left) and go for about 1 mile
until you see a rack of 5 mailboxes on the south side of the road. Take the
immediate left (going south) on a native surface road. Keep going straight and
it winds a bit toward the end but look for the cedar house at the end of the
gravel road. This bird is only the third record for the San Luis Valley and one
of about 30 (RA) for the State.
Lisa and I saw it yesterday afternoon, but so far was not seen this morning.

Great bird!

Re: [cobirds] Re: Flycatcher?

2014-03-27 Thread BirdNerd's Email
Art, I think your statement is misguided. The bird world is rich with the
vocals of our feathered friends that sometimes leads to wonderful views, and
sometimes not. I would never pretend that the siren call I hear from a
red-breasted nuthatch or bubbly melody of a yellow warbler means those birds
don't exist when I don't see them. Likewise, I can't think of many trips that
I have taken where calls, songs, etc didn't lead me to interesting bird
discoveries.

I would also caution anyone about the assumption that birding is only about the
proper ID as your statement implies. Some of us enjoy the chase, some of us
the listing, and some of us the experience of seeing or hearing cool wildlife
(as my son would say). I am sure there are dozens of reasons to bird and one
of them for some people, I am sure, is to be able to tell what bird is making
that sound irregardless of ever seeing it.

Finally, making ID's only on vocals or only sight would make a poor ID
scenario in many situations. The fact is most determinations of anything are
more sound when you are able to consider multiple sources of data. Considering
the unique nature of bird vocals it seems silly to ignore them to any extent
when determining bird identity.

In the end they all count as birds whether you see them or not.
