Android rootfs image?

2008-12-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all.

I flashed the new Image
(http://people.openmoko.org/sean_mcneil/androidfs.jffs2)
and uimage (http://people.openmoko.org/sean_mcneil/uImage-android).

I expect, as read in other threads
(http://lists.openmoko.org/nabble.html#nabble-td1583918%7Ca1585457),
 to have the virtual keyboard
startable via menu. But its missing.

Is there a possibility to install this keyboard.

Ueli

Re: Creating a distro on a sim card

2008-10-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Rodney

Was that a question for me?
I see you posted that to the list

Yes I believe these are the instructions to install and boot an OS on the SD

Now may be you can fix your IP problem without doing that
Do you know what steps led you to have a problem and not connect to your
phone anymore ?

Thanks
Alan

Rodney Myers wrote:

I was pointed to this link to help with my previous problem;

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Booting_from_SD

I was wondering if that read, was all that it took to get a
functioning OS on the SD card, and then the ability to copy onto the
phone?

Thanks

If your battery falls below a certain level then FreeRunner sometimes will
 not charge it.

We are working on fixes for this but in the short term you have these
 options.

 1. Jump start your battery. Michael will explain how, Takes 5 seconds.
 2. Get a stand alone battery charger from Nokia ( for battery types 4bl,
 5bl, 6bl)
 3. Get a replacement battery.

unable to start up freerunner after batterie was full down

2008-07-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi all
last night, my qtopia mean that the batteries are down and i have to charge
them...it was 2 o`clock AM
and nobody will phone me at this time...so, i don`t charge them and let the
batteries run down...
now, if i put the charging unit on it, i just hear some damped tones out from
the speaker and see the red led
on the AUX button is flashing... i have no chance to bring the freerunner
upneither in NAND nor in NOR-Flash
and least of all not in the normal qtopia image.. :-(
is anyone know this problem with the full discharge...?
i try to flash it with the debug board...

Is there any institution for the debug board used with freerunner?
Or is it the same as for neo 1973;

Once I had to use the 230V charger instead of the normal pc-cable to get it
booting again, maybe it can suck more energy from that. (Although it reports
getting 500mAh from usb, too.)

I`ve put right now the freerunner into my PC. Now, I`ll wait for 1 h. and check

My usb-port should supply 500 mAh, cuz in the past, I`ve charged my freerunner
over it
I`ve the qtopia image installed, not the ASU...But I tried to start the
boot-loader too, which is the
original...It should be immaterial which image is installed or isn't it?

It mean the same as one know this from a car with a very low battery...
(bridged )
just put another battery (I think it`s important, that the second battery have
the same Volt) parallel to the

If so, the FR can take the power from the two batteries...

 Great! Here's what I've got.

 1. Often, a startup seems to fail. This always happens when I use NAND
u-Boot (a 7-10-2008 version), but usually is OK with u-Boot from NOR (I
 think it's a May 2008 version).
Try this:
Quickfix is to ssh into device, edit /etc/init.d/qpe and remove the lines:
-#crappy workaround for some weird suspend bug
-rm /dev/ttySAC0
-mknod /dev/ttySAC0 c 204 64 -m 660
-chgrp dialout /dev/ttySAC0
-

which I put in for the 1973 and attempting to get suspend/resume
working. The little crash at first start was fixed in my initial testing
of this.

 2. Bluetooth handsfree - pairs and connects fine with my handsfree
headset. But if I try to make a call with it, there is no sound in the
headset or the handset. I don't know if the other person hears me.

 3. Bluetooth keyboard - will pair but not connect with my Logitech
 Lenovo Mini bluetooth keyboard.

 4. Bluetooth and reboot - I don't know for sure, but it appears that
having any bluetooth configured will cause Qtopia to fail on reboot.
I've had to re-flash the rootfs to reset things.

will look into bt things.

 5. Wireless LAN - once this is set up, it never successfully connects. I
use a WPA-KEY configuration. Worse, it seems that after I configure it,
Qtopia will never successfully boot up again. I've had to re-flash the
 rootfs to reset things.

That is because wpa_supplicant has problems on this system. If you can
get it up through the commandline, let me know. I couldn't.

Qtopia runs the script /opt/Qtopia/bin/lan-network for wifi configurations.

 6. Installing QPK apps - Is this possible? I would like to run a
terminal (the Konsole port) and any other useful/cool apps. I don't know
how to go about this. I've copied some QPK files to the /home/root on
the device, but how can these be installed? Or can they?

They need to be on a web server/feed.
I will set up such a feed this week at qtopia.net

Qpk's are like opkg but with added security features, such as sandboxing
and not running scripts.

 7. Can I use the package manager to find apps? (Presumably that requires
a network connection, which I don't yet have.)

Yes, but it only handles qpk's.

 8. Is there a walkthrough to set up GPRS? I'm on T-Mobile in the US.
Should I follow the Manually Using GPRS in the openmoko wiki? Or can it
be done via Qtopia's UI? (I've not been successful with the latter.)

GPRS in Qtopia depends on multiplexing, which we haven't yet gotten
working. We will once we get a few more freerunners.

 9. Is there any web browser available for this version? Lorn, I saw you
mentioned 4.4 will have a Webkit port. Can't wait for that.

4.4 is it. I am trying to get mgmnt to start qtopia 4.4 snapshots so I
could release images for it.

Thanks for what looks to be a very promising software set, and help
 addressing these issues.

i changed the use for input settings in the language menu and restarted

the use for input casket is still active...

2 = if i write a message or other things, i see at the top a drop-down menu,

Qtopia on Openmoko?

Attempting to launch the media player caused Qtopia to restart. Three times.

Mp3 files on SD don't appear in the media player's lists, but they DO
appear in Documents. Clicking on a mp3 file gives a media engine not
configured error.

The POWER button being held activates the Reset/Restart menu, but
releasing the button causes it to close. I need to hold down POWER and
press the button I want.

The tarball you downloaded is a bare rootfs, there is no gui on it.
Get the one labeled Qtopia flash image for FIC Neo Freerunner (gta02)

hmm... must drink coffee before I reply...

you need to hit the screen to keep it alive. That Qtopia has suspend
enabled and probably is suspending.

Does that mean that there is written Neo FreeRunner in GTA02 at the
place where Neo 1973 is written in GTA01? (e.g. in [1])
 Thanks,
 Kevin

Are Wolfgang Spraul and me right (gta1=neo gta2=freerunner)
Or is Piotr right (neo1973 = class of phones covering phase 0
 and phase 1 incl
gta01 and gta02 and only public release or phase2 =
 freerunner) Hope i
represented Pioter view properly (check further up thread)
Would be good to know from one of Openmoko team members

 reflect correct picture

 I haven't had a chance to triple-check, but I'm 99% sure it's this:

 GTA01 = Neo 1973
 GTA02 = Neo FreeRunner

Thus both are members of the Neo family.

In this case it is a very valid issue and definitely not a complaint or
a whine.
It basically tanks one of the largest consumer bases and it tanks my
project in my company until I find something else.

You left out one important part in your mail below.
Will GPS work without trouble, is it in any way affected by the
bandwidth issue.
I would surely think not, but if y0ou want to market this to someone as
a PDA only, then definitely give the complete information sucha as
include GPS usability in NA.

Pietro m0nt0 Montorfano wrote:
So, ok, the NEO does NOT support 850/1900 MHz band, this is an issue,
FIC is informed of that and i think that they are evaluating the
possibilities to make it working, so please just stop crying at the
list my neo here isn't working... ok, i understand the problem and i
understand you, but receiving a tons of similar mail is boring. AFAIK
FIC members read the list, and now are just considering some solutions
(at least i hope).

So in conclusion, the replies at the FAQ on this issue are (forgive me
if appear a bit rude but it's due to my english):
I live in north america, i have my NEO dev edition and i can't get the
signal, what i can do?
sell your neo, it's an hardware/firmware/software issue, so it can't
be fixed with a simple software upgrade

I need the 850 support should i buy the neo now?
No you don't have to until you want a good pda whitout the possibility
to make phone calls
I live in NA and i usually stay in my big city, will the neo get the
signal?
May be, it will probably get it but it's not assured, you can try to
verify somehow if the bands supported by the neo are covering your area

What can i do to make the neo supporting those bands?
you can do nothing
What is FIC doing about this?
Don't know, i hope they are considering some solutions for this issue
Last but not least: which are the solutions which FIC is considering?
The solutions are:
1) do nothing, at least for the GTA02, maybe a fix in GTA03 or
something similar
2) produce 2 separate phone, 1 for the NA and another one for the Rest
Of The World (identical phone except the capability to get the
850/1900 band INSTEAD the 900/1800 one)
3) make a nice community poll to ask if the members can wait another 2
month (the time is just something I think) to redesign the hardware
and fix the firmware so that we can have a full quad band phone)

The 3rd solution was not proposed but it's another way to solve the
problem, honestly i don't mind about the quad band, i live in italy
and i don't think i'll ever come to america, if i'll do that i'll use
some other cheap phone, but i think that it's important for other
community member to have it working in quad band way, so i'll wait if
the community will decide to wait and obviously FIC will consider this
solution.

Cya!

Pietro

P.S. We will wait for some FIC official solution.

We were willing to wait for the commercial version to start our
development, but if that is not going to be functional in the USA in
remote areas like other cellphones, then it is lights-out for any
possible future vendor here in the USA who want to incorporate this in
to an existing product line.

Thats a fact not a wine.

I will get a development kit from Apple and live with it.
Our products need a gps/phone/computer system as an add-on and it cant
wait past January 2008.

If the GPS works great I will buy it as a PDA in future once it is released.

This morning the project using the NEO was canned, reasons are, ever
shifting timetables and secondly, too much risk when the rug is pulled
from under your feet by FIC suddenly not supporting US frequency bands,
while there are other alternatives such as Iphone available with a
development kit that might meet our development scenario -- (about just).
Unfortunately rural access is crucial for our applications, so it just
became a no-no.

Anyway thanks to all for the input, and the NEO was a great idea till
now, unfortunately it does not seem if it will be available in a working
state within the next year here in the USA.

All of luck with OpenMoko.

Bye.

Well the man at FIC (Michael) said that this issue is being evaluated,
i'm not associated with fic in any way so anything i'm writing is

No, i've left anything because the subject of this mail is regarding
the 850MHz issue, GPS is not involved with it.

Well, then add in the WIKI that GPS will still work in NA, else it only
makes matters worse for marketing and is misleading by not disclosing

Not long ago (10 yeqrs ago) there were a lot of resistance to GSM here
which is just not understandable and luckily it is getting way more
foothold.

I am currently with T-Mobile as they always were a GSM shop.

The phone with the ultimate best coverage for me here in the states on
GSM is an Old Siemens M56 on T-Mobile.
I tried several new phones/services which just died out in the sticks.

Does anyone know if the Siemens M56 was a dual or single band phone?
If the band-spec is contained in the Neo, I would not be worried about
it.

NA uses the unusual 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands for GSM. The Neo, at
least as it will be first available, will not support 850 MHz (but will
1900 MHz). This means that it can work in NA, _but_ will get worse
coverage than GSM phones capable of also 850 MHz operation. According to
my second-hand understanding of the situation, of the major US GSM
providers, T-Mobile has more 1900 MHz coverage than ATT/Cingular, and
that major cities may have decent amounts of it as opposed to rural
areas.

It's vague, but HTH.

Ahhh...There's nothing like achieving infamy to start my morning off right.

Seriously though, this is VERY bad news for western hemisphere
participation in the OpenMoko project.

I will repeat my earlier exhortation to FIC and the project:

The Apple iPhone *HAS* changed the public's perceptions of what a small,
personal communication enabled pocket computer is capable of doing and how
it can make their lives easier and keep them up to date and in touch with
all that interests them. And after using mine for 60 days now, I am
*CONVINCED* that Apple has hit upon a nearly perfect form factor and device
interaction model. The centered, 4.5 Diag *Finger Touch* screen with one
thumb width of grip space on either end of a basically rectangular device
is a Golden Form Factor. Yes, there are things I would change and things
I would add and I am compiling a list, and YES, the fact that this thing's
software is NOT open source makes me nuts!

Once more with feeling now:

In my humble opinion, FIC needs to scrap the GTA01/02 form factor and
redesign it to closely match the iPhone's front face. This would give MORE
room inside for the boards and battery than the current stretched
doughnut design. At the very least, if FIC is seriously going to put
the GTA02 into production, they should start a separate design team on an
iPhone clone project immediately. And for Tiny Tim's sake, let's use that
extra room to enable all four bands this time, OK?

Ahhh... Infamy.

Agreed, I'm in California as well, and though I bought a pre-paid T
Mobile card, it doesn't work either because of the 3G issue.

It would seem the 850 issue plus the 3G issue has just 'bricked' my Neo
(in a metaphorical sense) without me writing a single line of code.

And given that the GTA02 will have the same 850 issue, plus that we
haven't heard any new news on the 3G firmware upgrade for quite a while,
my dream of developing for the Neo is starting to fade away. (Michael
informed us back on Oct 13th that they were just working out the
'distribution terms' for giving us a firmware patch -- what's the status?)

Very true, BUT... and this is a big but

FIC or some other smart manufacturer has to clone the iPhone's form factor
details and performance points.

I have lived with my iPhone now for a few weeks and I simply LOVE it. I
bought TWO more for my wife and daughter. Yes, the software IS a big part
of it, but the hardware design is NOT to be discounted here.

I have stated here on list that future FIC designs need to be more like the
iPhone. Apple has chosen it's (obviously wrong) direction and FIC and
others have an opportunity to step in and give the world what it wants.

In my humble opinion, and I know I'm going to take a lot of arrows for
this, FIC needs to halt the GTA02 work and re-form factor the design to
have a larger, glass protected screen.

There is only about a six month window here that Apple has left open.
Someone will clone this form factor and slap an OSS stack on it (QTopia?)
and I'd like to see FIC/OpenMoko be the first out of the gate.

Re: Apple's heavy hand an opportunity for Linuxsmartphones likeOpenMoko

The neo's screen is already bigger- it has more pixels.
No. The dimensions of the Neo's screen are smaller at 2.5 diag versus 3.5
diag. for the iPhone. Yes, the VGA resolution is impressive and superior
to the iPhone, but for a touch screen interface, you must maximize the
screen size to device plan form ratio so you can make touch screen
keyboarding work without annoying the user with constant finger-tip typos.
Use an iPhone and you'll see that the inferior resolution is not a
problem.

In any case, the neo isn't about schnazz, it's about freedom. Kind of
like PC hardware vs mac hardware. PC hardware is open and awesome- you
can pick from 500 different motherboards, gfx cards, vendors, etc.,
unlike the apple-only mac, but pc hardware isn't as schnazzy looking as
macs.
This is not about style. This is about optimum human/device interaction
form factors. It is the size and shape and layout of the iPhone that
strongly influences the usability of the device. And...And...Who says you
can't want style --AND-- freedom?

IMO the neo isn't and should be trying to be schnazzy, I think you're
wrong about matching up to the iphone's look.

Once again...Form factor is the point here. Not Styling. Trim it
different, use day-glo plastics! I don't care. Just make sure it is about
the same dimensions, predominately rectangular, and has a flush glass
screen.

Although I do hope the neo comes in colors, that would be appropriate to
the freedom thing.

The first thing I bought as an iPhone accessory was a pack of six Silicone
iPhone jackets, all in different colors. My wife grabbed the Girly Pink
one, and I took the manly black one!

withheld. Also, when you simply don't have the information, let the
inquirer know when you likely will have it. This two simple rules go a
long way toward keeping people working together effectively.

If I abused the Community inbox with my frustrations, I sincerely
apologise. I felt it necessary to call attention to the fact that the
community was now split into two camps, the haves and have nots. As one of
the have nots, I was frustrated with the inability to participate due to
the limited quantities produced in the GTA01 runs, and even more frustrated
with the lack of ANY date information on the GTA01 backorder run or even a
Rough-Order-of-Magnitude date/month/quarter estimate for GTA02 availability.

Also frustrating for me was that the Interest List in the wiki was not used
in anyway to prioritize the orders taken and shipped. I strongly urge you
to erect a GTA02 PRE-ORDER queue as soon as possible to help those left out
of the GTA01 fun to get a spot in line for the GTA02. This will also help
you better estimate the production demand.

As for future Neo shaping...

We all like and appreciate style and modernity, but form should always
follow function and let's make sure we think carefully about ways that
people are likely to want to use this device considering the amazing
possibilities an open platform like this has. I would love to be able to
whip out a blue tooth keyboard and post an entry to my much neglected blog
when I have the opportunity. The freedom of Landscape or Portrait use
should not be limited to handholding or to the availability of specially
molded cradles.

Thank you again for your hard work and please understand that I share your
excitement for this project and sorry if some of my suppressed excitement
got converted to frustration.

I really wish we could give more accurate timing information. But please
understand that what you're seeing is a product being built from
scratch. We're not using reference designs. We're not using 3rd party
software. We're doing this from scratch. And _very_ publicly. You can
track on code and comments every day if you like. We don't hide
anything. Bugs and all.

Product development is messy. There are literally hundreds of components
in this device, all needing to be sourced with different lead times from
different vendors. If SDRAM becomes scarce, we suffer. If a vendor has
yield problems, so we do we.

I encourage you (and everyone else) to see this project for what it is
-- a truly unique opportunity to take part in the development of an open
phone. This is a personal dream of mine for years. Even though we've had
our fair share of delays, I'm still incredibly excited about where we
stand now.

Your support, by buying hardware, or just making constructive comments,
will allow us to grow and help change this industry. We're still small
now, but we've got grand plans ;-)

Re: Convince me NOT to cancel my order.

2007-08-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Just a status update here:

I emailed [EMAIL PROTECTED] and Jouston was kind enough to respond
promptly. (Thank-you!) Basically, I asked to have my GTA01 back-order
cancelled if they did not have them stateside by September 10th. Jouston
replied that they would not available until the 20th and promptly cancelled
my order for me.

It simply made NO SENSE to me to keep open an order for the GTA01 if the
GTA02 will follow within 60 to 90 days. The Wi-Fi feature is an important
enough addition to wait for.

Until then, I have ordered an iPhone and will do my best to avoid bricking
it while I try my hand at unlocking it to work on T-Mobile's network. Yes,
it lacks the AGPS I need for some of the geospace-aware apps that I would
like to work on, but it will be interesting to study the interface design
up close.

Also, while I'm at it (and I have your attention), there are a few
horifically basic handset design issues that need to be addressed in future
FIC/OpenMoko hardware designs that looking at the iPhone makes painfully
obvious:

1) Shape. The hemisphere on the bottom of the GTA01/02 phone will not
allow the phone to remain upright in a breast pocket. It will always cant
to one side or the other. The bottom needs to be pretty much squared off.

2) Touch-Screen recess. The bezel height around the touch screen needs to
be cut down to no more than 1mm so that the maximum touch screen finger use
utility is preserved.

If these have been mentioned before on the list or the wiki, well, just add
my voice to the choir.

Doing my best to not sound Pissed off or Disgruntled here...

Unfortunately this is half the story.
Whatever I ever kept in my pocket fell out and broke if my pocket was
not buttoned at the top.

Glasses phones pdas ... you name it.
The requirement to have your pocket buttoned up is way more important.
So the requirement that it must be flat at the bottom is superficial.

I prefer the aesthetic look of the Neo and there is nothing more

Convince me NOT to cancel my order.

2007-08-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am frustrated. After waiting patiently for many, many months for the
hardware to arrive, and getting absolutely NO status information on my
order for weeks, I finally sent an email and I got this:

I am sorry that we are not able to arrange your order on 2nd batch
which is in mid-August. Both Base- and Advanced- phones are running
out of stock. However, there will be another shipment ready for the
rest of back orders in September. Appreciate your understanding and
 supporting.

I then asked two important questions:

When in September? --and-- When is the GTA02 expected to start shipping?

Here's the reply (timely though, I'll grant you):

I can't give you the exact date but in September. As for GTA02, I think
that I'm not the right contact window or in a position to answer that. You
may keep a close watch on our community and on wiki sites. Thanks.

Why can't I get quality, authoritative answers to these questions?

Unless I'm some kind of idiot, why would I want buy a GTA01 phone if the
GTA02 was to follow shortly?

Why am I not being given the choice to RIGHT NOW to be placed at the FRONT
of the GTA02 sales queue?

Why am I putting up with all this frustration reading about others who
-have- their phones and why should I not just cancel my order??

Convince me.

Re: Neo Sound and USB Questions

2007-08-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for that wonderful explanation!

BTW: Where is my own e-mail in the list? I still did not receive it,
but it seems you did?! Somethings strange in that list...

Am I right that I would need to solder some more things to make this
whole construction work? I mean, I have to spend these 5V to the Neo for
charging,
and still need the other pins for transferring data from the USB drive
to the Neo.

So I would have to split the cable, right?

Rusty Chris wrote:

device (in theory the Neo can be host or client, though currently only
client
mode is functional).

*But this feature will hopefully be added in GTA2?*

If a device wants to draw more power it is required to
ask permission from the host/hub. Many simple [non-compliant] devices
skip this step and
just assume that they can draw as much power as they want, which leads to
problems of overloading the host/hub. The Neo will not draw more than 100ma
until it has gotten permission. There is one exception - the neo can
detect its
own 'dumb' charger by the presence of 48kOhm resistance between USB pin 5
and ground. In this case the power mgmt unit will allow the full 500ma
power
draw.

So if you have a decently noise-free 5V USB car charger, it would be fairly
simple to solder in a 48k resistor (note that it should be low-tolerance
- 1%)
and have the neo pull 500mA for fast charging.

As for forcing the neo to ignore USB power negotiation, I don't know if this
is a kernel driver issue (hackable) or a USB chipset issue (less
hackable)...

Neo Sound and USB Questions

2007-08-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi List!

I've got a few questions as I'm a little bit confused about some issues.
(Also have no Neo to test it myself)

First of all, what about the soundcard the Neo provides. Is it a good one
or some kind of cheap hardware, designed for phone-call-quality sound
output?

(And is it sterio or not)

I guess the AUX-Port on the Neo is a 3,5mm (or maybe 2,5mm) TRS Connector
(german: Klinkenstecker) used often for Headsets (4 connectors instead
of 3 as usual).

If so, is it still usable for an external amplifier?

Let's assume the soundcard is no good. So it should be possible to use a
external USB
Soundcard with crazy-high-definition-whatever-output, to make the Neo
giving me
crystal clear sounds, right? (I think you need that external powered USB
hub then...)

Is it possible to use the external soundcard and charge the Neo the same
time? Or

use an external USB harddisk, the soundcard and still charge the Neo?

Well, for what do I need all that information? I want to use the Neo as
sound system in

my car, and therefor need all this stuff ;)

Thanks for any suggestion!

Re: Neo 1973 is sold out..

Maybe some of us are just jumping the gun, what if that message is
meant to say: We will only be shipping units for the orders that we
receive after today in September..or something like that.

Nope. Re-read the original post. I captured that text of the blog and the
webstore. They specifically use the word OVERSOLD.

That means you may have ordered weeks ago and still may be outta luck. But
without more information from the store staff, you're in Neo-Limbo.

The last thing I want is to get charged for the GTA01 in October and then a
month or two later the GTA02 comes out. (Though few think that to be a
realistic scenario at this time.)

I would like FIC to pin-point the oversold cutoff order number and post it
as soon as possible, if that is not too much to ask.

Most of us have been exceptionally patient, supportive and exited about the
project.

Many years ago, I saw an interview with Arthur C. Clarke in which he
mentioned his latest Clarkism:

Trying to learn about computers without the hardware is like trying to
learn about sex without the software.

I guess that happens if you dont know what you are really charged for
when locked into a provider such as ATT.
Even more reason to have an unlocked phone. If you want to unlock the
Iphone, all you have is a PDA.

It should be clear that the Iphone is a bit dead in the water.
Anyway, this definitely helps to justify the wait for the FIC NEO.

This looks like to me as if you HAVE TO use ATT when in Europe!?
No wonder it is so expensive to roam.
If this is true, the the Iphone is a dead duck for business.

Seemingly the poor Iphone users cannot negotiate better deals, why
because there is no competition .. only ATT for the Iphone.

Re: GPS vs. TDOA (was Re: release date)

2007-05-31 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Andrew, I used both Garmin Ique and Cellphone based-GPS.

I can give you hard examples why no corporation that does service calls
at this moment would even consider cell-based GPS.

I visit customers all over the US and Canada.
Out of the 50 or so visits there were about 20 with no cellphone
coverage in remote areas where sawmills are located.

On the contrary, my Garmin GPS worked flawlessly everywhere.

You have no idea what a PITA it is to get to an airport in the middle of
the night, with the cell-gps guiding you out of the city and then just
dies when you get rural.
Furthermore, in order to solve the problem, you will have to carry 3 or
four simcards from different carriers since the coverage maps are
different for different areas.

If you stick to urban areas here in the USA, fine cell-based gps
works fine.
If you do corporate time critical traveling and service just get a
REAL gps such as Garmin or what the FIC NEO will be able to have.

If you want to lose money in the services industry here in the US...go
ahead use a cellphone to guide you.

Been there done that, late or lost every time.

AGAIN: I would at this moment not mind to get a Fic Neo if it can make
calls and receive calls and it will be nice to get the software upgrades
and see it evolve.

I just cannot buy the APPLE I-Phone.
It is a dead end FIC NEO lookalike , however nice it is.
The Iphone is a nice city phone gizmo, not a real business assistant
.
The FIC has a real chance to become a real travel assistant, but you
have to get the basic phones in our hands as soon as the hardware is the
final version, else you will make FIC miss the buss.
If it receives call dials, have an address book and the hardware is
finalized...get it out!

I think my question is why is everybody freaking out about the iPhone
not having GPS? It will report location as close as 30 meters, usually
within 100 meters and almost always within 300 meters. This accuracy
is good enough for most applications. Even better cellular TDOA is
accurate inside building as well as outside buildings (which in my
experience GPS is not). Are location detection services like
TruePosition's U-TDOA (used by Cingular and T-Mobile in the USA) not
available internationally?

So why is GPS the killer functionality the Neo has over the iPhone?

(note: I understand why the OpenMoko development platform is better
than the iPhone. I'm just talking about GPS vs. carrier provided
location detection.)

No problem. I think FIC developers underestimates this. there a re a
lot of us in companies want to use the phone platform for other markets
anyway.
Open Source is the only way we can create derivative applications for it
to even distribute with our products.

If the hardware is fixed right now and will not be upgraded severely, it
would be great to have one now and continually upgrade and add software
as it develops.

This is anyway how most open source folks work and it is part of the fun.

As Steve Jobs said in his keynote speech with the release of the iphone,
making a call is the killer app

He is right and we must not forget that.

I think you guys need to get this out asap.
The only reason I do not buy the iphone right now is because it does not

To me there are three killer aps in order of importance
1) Make a call (thanks Steve you're right)
2) GPS
3) Open source.
3) Internet/mail etc.

This is just my opinion here, but I don't see the Neo1973 to be a mass
consumer device, nor do I think that is/was FIC's/OpenMoko's intent. The
1973 is a SW Developer/Bleeding Edge Adopter platform. Its a starting
place and an incubator for ideas. I would not expect serious drop hardening
until the third and fourth generation of the series.

I was just looking at my current phone's size to compare it to the reports

held up. Each new phone I purchase is due to a battery issue only. I have
never broke a phone due to it falling (but I have broke an iPod due to the
internal drive failing after a fall!)

Considering that the Neo1973 has no hard drive, how well should we expect
the rest of the hardware to hold up due to falls, drops, etc?

Sam...

Thanks for posting that link. A great write up on the Fundamentally
Immoral business practices in the cellullar communications industry today.

What I expect from the Operators or Carriers (depending on which oceans
are nearby) is that they cease and desist using obfuscation and bundling to
hide the true cost of their services. Ala-carte pricing that can be
compared business to business.

Another Mini-Rant of my own:

Cell Plans That Help Parents Teach Responsibility

As a parent, one of my great angers with the cellular industry is that
NO-ONE has offered a pre-paid plan that limits the child's monthly use of
the air-time resource by cutting it off once the minute limit is exceeded
for the month. Calls FROM and TO the parent account would still go through
and be billed to the parent account.

But the cell industry in not interested in what is best for Society as a
whole, namely young people who can demonstrate the ability to conserve and
manage resources. Thanks for being such good citizens, guys. ( Sarcasm)

I think that the article I linked to really clearly covers all of the
issues presented in the email responses. The price subsidies, the
locked/unlocked, the SIM buying, the phone w/o SIM buying, etc.

That's why I brought it to this group, because I respect the
intelligence of the folks here, and I think they care about furthering
the efficacy and usability of mobile computing and communication.

I took it for granted that everyone on the list, including myself, knows
the difference between T/CDMA (also available with SIMs, but nevermind)
and GSM devices in terms of subscriber identity management.

I _don't_ take for granted that anyone not working in or around the cell
phone industry can even spell SIM, let alone understand the implications
of whether or not their phone has a removable chip, or if that chip will
work in another device, let alone with another carrier.

When my mother/brother/friend in the US wants to buy a phone, they are

SIMs are great - I don't like SIM-free phones like Verizon ones that
require somebody at Verizon to switch the service to a different
phone. With GSM you just switch the SIM yourself. Of course it would
also be nice to be able to use different devices without having to
physically switch the SIM (like use the GPRS connection in a laptop or
PDA). Anyway SIM-free is misleading as you are using it, because
you are actually complaining about locked phones that will only work
on one network. And BTW it's not so hard to buy new unlocked phones
on the net if you are willing to pay unsubsidized prices for them.

As for Jobs, I think he negotiated a lot of unique stuff that cannot
typically be negotiated with a carrier. It's too bad the phone still
costs $500-600 even with a contract. Makes me wonder what the real
manufacturing cost is; is the hardware that super-duper or are they
just wanting to have even better margins than they get on ipods?

Thanks for posting that link. A great write up on the Fundamentally
Immoral business practices in the cellullar communications industry

What I expect from the Operators or Carriers (depending on which

I think that the article I linked to really clearly covers all of the
issues presented in the email responses. The price subsidies, the
locked/unlocked, the SIM buying, the phone w/o SIM buying, etc.

That's why I brought it to this group, because I respect the
intelligence of the folks here, and I think they care about furthering
the efficacy and usability of mobile computing and communication.

I took it for granted that everyone on the list, including myself,
knows
the difference between T/CDMA (also available with SIMs, but
nevermind)
and GSM devices in terms of subscriber identity management.

I _don't_ take for granted that anyone not working in or around the
cell
phone industry can even spell SIM, let alone understand the
implications
of whether or not their phone has a removable chip, or if that chip
will
work in another device, let alone with another carrier.

2007-02-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Clearly, before the September mass market release, we should have
regionally oriented wikis that accurately list the Neo1973/OpenMoko
friendly carriers and connectivity options. I also floated an idea
recently about an Neo/OpenMoko Friendly barnding program that falls in
along the same subject here.

For what it's worth, I got back an email from T-Mobile customer service and
they indicated that they had no plans at this time for the Neo1973. But
they also seemed confused about my question in other ways. I imagine that
until one of us gets a chance to talk to their VP of 'Keeping The Customer
Locked In Our Walled Garden', we'll never know if they see this
change/opportunity coming.

The Neo/OpenMoko platform, if it takes off, **will** change how the major
carriers operate here in the U.S. They will have to morph into something
more resembling their european cousins, and stop trying to grab market
share by using the latest fashion phone as bait, and instead, focus on
being competitive, low access barrier service providers and if they have
any sense at all, they will add value by enabling and supporting 'Mobile
Connectivity Computing' (MCC) by distributing and supporting MCC oriented
software.

I understand it, most other places this is not the case but it's the
 reality here

when Sean's dad, or other normal consumers go out to purchase a
phone, the only trustworthy source they can really find is from the
 carrier... so it's a self-perpetuating ecosystem

My experience has been somewhat different. I purchased my last phone,
under a contract, from CellularOne in the US. It's a gsm quad-band
Motorola V400. It was unlocked at the time of purchase. I've been off
contract for over a year now and have successfully used sims from other
carriers.

The store from which I purchased the phone has told me that CellOne does
not lock its phones.

Before I found out about the Neo, I was planning on purchasing my next
phone from Nokia's company-owned NYC store, where I got my N800. All
of their phones are unlocked.

Off the top of my head, I would think enrollment in such a carrot program
should be contingent upon the carrier making their GPRS access available as
a prepaid service as well as voice. Not sure if carriers can selectively
restrict access to AGPS, but I would add that baggage as well.

OpenMoko is about openness. There is nothing open about term contracts.

Hi,

There was some discussion about this in this thread:

http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2007-February/003045.html

This phone is an unblocked quad-band phone, so it can connect to any GSM
carrier. The only issue with a pre-paid phone may be recharging the
phone if the carrier forces you to use some sort of custom on-screen
interface to recharge it. It would be good to get reports of any
problematic carriers after the initial phone is shipped!

Good luck!

Re: openmoko and pre-paid cards

2007-02-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm going to chime in here again on this:

Here in the US, getting pre-paid voice service via a T-Mobile sim is no
problem exactly as Mary illustrates.

The problem is getting pre-paid GPRS access to anywhere on the net OUTSIDE
of T-Mobile's silly T-Zones walled garden.

~90% of the amazing applications that will be written for the OpenMoko/Neo
platform will involve pulling and pushing data to and from your handset via
GPRS.

T-Mobile or Sprint(??) must be induced to offer a prepaid GPRS service if
the OpenMoko/Neo platform is to be as fully successful as possible.

If this prepaid GPRS access fails to materialize, has anyone done any work
on creating a working cellular voice modem that could communicate via a
personal dialup gateway at home?

My experience here was almost the same as yours -- the difference

told me I couldn't get an additional discount for not taking any phone

Mary...

I've been looking into this issue in a related way.

One of the biggest opportunities for the Neo will be writing mobile
oriented data retreval and sync applications using gps/GPRS.

For example, imagine an application that uses GPS location information to
determine your car's proximity to your favorite grocery store on your way
home. When you get to within 5 miles of the store, your Neo uses the GPRS
to access a personal website page where your spouse keeps a grocery list.
If there are any items on the list, the application downloads the and
alerts you via your bluetooth earbud.

Unfortunatly, It looks to me like T-Mobile is currently not interested in
letting its pre-paid customers use GPRS to go anywhere outside their Silly
T-Zones walled garden.

If anyone has any insight into T-Mobile's awareness of the Neo and if they
realize that they have a terrific opportunity ahead to network enable this
amazing phone, I'd sure like to hear about it.
