Mac Plus Start Up time.
I recently upgraded my Mac Plus to 4 Megs of ram. I didn't bother booting it before the installation of the extra ram and can't remember how long it took with 1 meg. It seems to take a long time to boot. More than 30 seconds before it scans for a drive. If you're impatient like I am, then force the Plus to bypass the RAM test: press the mouse button just before flipping on the power switch, and hold it down until it starts the rest of the boot procedure. Speeds things up quite a bit. -- Prof. Thomas H. Re: 800K disks, part II
And then there is the problem of Media differences, as mentioned before by someone else on the list, but got it backwards, the HD disk has a thinner magnetic coating, and smaller magnetic particles. The thinner coating means that the magnetic force needed to alter the particles is much less than an 800k drive puts out for the 800k disks. The smaller particles allow data to be packed more tightly on the HD disks, this helps the HD disks able to have 18 sectors per track. Also the tracks on a 1.4 HD disk are thinner, and the sectors are longer. This info is from the book Inside The Apple Macintosh written by Jim Heid and Peter Norton, copyright 1989 Dan M. Dan, a message I beat into my students is: don't believe everything you read, just because it's in a book! Consider the qualifications of the authors; no one is an expert in everything. And consider logic, too. So, thanks for giving me a chance to point out this book's error. Those authors you cite are just plain wrong. It is well known among disk designers that you need to INCREASE the specific magnetic strength of particles as you shrink the bit size, to prevent excessive diminution of signal strength (simple logic: smaller bits are weaker magnets unless you do something about the material properties). If you do some more careful research, you'll find that the coercivities of media have indeed increased with each generation as densities have gone up. The original information I posted, including the specific coercivity values I cited, were correct. The data you cite about rotation rates is interesting, but ultimately irrelevant. The bits switch magnetizations so fast (nanosecond scale) that rotation speed has no practical implications at all (other than wear). The only things that really matter are the remanent magnetizations of the particles, the track width, and the bit density. If you're going to pack more bits along a track, the bits will be smaller. Again, if you don't want the read signal to go down, you've got to make the magnets more powerful. That necessarily implies that the coercivities must increase, so they're harder to write. Hope that makes this clear. -- Prof. Thomas H. Lee Center for Integrated Systems, CIS-205 420 Via Palou Mall Stanford University Stanford, CA 94305-4070 http://www-smirc.stanford.edu 650-725-3709 voice, -3383 fax mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Re: LC 575s (was: Help!)
on 12/4/02 2:00 PM, (Compact Macs) at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have six LC575s and I finally have some time to learn about their capabilities. snip I have several students who do not have computers at home and what I would like to do is at least provide them with Internet capability (the local phone company is willing to provide some access). At home here I have an Imac, a couple of 6400s and the LCs. Now what do I need to do with these 575s to accomplish this? Will they work with High Speed? I'm not sure what that means. If you mean high speed internet, yes, they'll work with cable or dsl. You're going to need an interface of some sort. Cable internet or dsl will supply modems, and if you want to use a dial-up connection you need a modem. Are you giving these out individually, or networking them at some central point? If you want to network them, I would encourage high-speed internet, because networking with a dial-up modem would be excruciatingly slow. You'll need some sort of ethernet router to deal with multiple connections. I have 15 computers, including some old ones like yours, networked in my home using ISDN, which is only a little faster than a dial-up connection. I can't get dsl or cable internet here. Since only 2 or 3 re used at the same time, it's bearable. What printers can we use with them? The LC 575s will work with any Mac serial printers (they use the little round plug similar to the keyboard plug). What OS do they need? 575s can run up to OS 8.1. If you max out the RAM (36 MB), OS 8.1 will be slow but usable. You might be happier with 7.5.5, which is still available free by downloading 7.5.3 then the 7.5.5 upgrade. Can you increase storage capacity? Yep, you can put larger SCSI hard drives in there. They can not use ATA/IDE drives. Can you increase CD ROM drive speeds? Yes, but I'm not sure you'll notice much of a difference. How difficult is it to obtain extra RAM? Easy and fairly inexpensive. They use 72-pin RAM. Can the monitors be used for other machines? Well, you can use motherboards from *older* all-in-one Macs, but using those monitors for a newer motherboard would be harder to accomplish. It's too bad, because they are fairly nice monitors. All of these beautiful little macs do have ethernet cards, a couple have 8.1 most have 16RAM with one @ 32. I have one external 56k Modem. Get more 32 MB sticks and max out the RAM. You'll need more modems if you are giving them out to separate homes. The pudgy LC 575 happens to be one of my favorite Macs, only because I feel sorry that people cannibalize them to use the motherboards in the Color Classic. Re: Problem initializing HD
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 09:23:19 + Hello all. After succesfully changing the HD in my Classic to a 100mb I then went about the process of initializing it so I can put on system 7.0.1. I booted up with Apple HD SC setup 7.3.5 and started to initialize. It starts no problem but after a couple of minutes a bomb error appears saying 'system error bad f-line'. Before you go to a *whole* lot of trouble with other formatters, ritual sacrifice, etc., have you made sure that the new HD has termination resistors installed? If not, then communication between the Mac and the drive can be sort of iffy. The dreaded bad f-line error message can easily result from the Mac getting some bent bits back from the drive. -- Prof. Thomas H. Re: SplitIt! [was Re: File Transfer]
From: BrianH [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: File Transfer My only access to the Internet is with my PeeCee. I can (and have) downloaded lots of freebies, which can easily be transferred to the Classic - provided that they can fit onto an HD floppy. I would like to be able to transfer larger files, either :- 1. by chopping them up and reassembling them on the Classic.. I use a shareware prog called SplitIt! - drop files onto it and they break into disk-sized chunks, drop the bits on it and they reassemble. I've been using SplitIt! too and think highly of it. You can even control the size of the chuncks. Bob F -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Compare the System heap sizes with and without the offending inits. Also, be aware that iCab, like most modern browses, graps memory from the System heap as it goes along. The extent depends on the complexity of the html code. So can an appropriate amount be reserved for the system? Would enlarging the system cache do this? Scott You might try out the Reaper, a very handy freeware control panel available from http://www.akua.com/Software/Reaper/index.html with which you can act on the System heap and a lot more. The 1.3.2 version is rock steady and supposedly good back to System 7.0.1. I've unfortunately forgotten which OS you're using here though. Bob F -- Compact Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/. Re: 2.5 hard disks in Compacts?
Apparently these were manufactured (or at least sold) by several companies under a couple of different names. I have one from Jasmine that's called a 'Clipper Drive' because of the belt clip on the case so you could carry the drive around with you easily. Here is what I know about the little darlings You can use a hard drive up to about 160-180MB _without_ an external power source. Above that and you need to get 5v from somewhere and the drive I have get's that from the ADB port, the power cable has a passthru plug. The DB25 SCSI port provides pass thru termination automatically. I have mine setup as a boot drive for my compacts with a bunch of appropriate system repair and diagnostic software. Original Message: - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 22:05:57 EDT I picked up this little 2.5-inch hard drive case called HitchHiker 80(though no longer any 80mb HD inside), made by Mass Microsystems. Has regular DB-25 (both male and female) on it, and SCSI ID setting switch. The male DB-25 is at a right angle, so you could just plug it into computer's SCSI port with the case in a vertical position. I'd love to use this cute little thing...only trouble is, no power supply. I assume 5v.(positive center? my guru told me), but the jack to plug the PS into is very tiny. So I am searching for the right wallwart and small enough adaptor plug. Would a 6-volt wallwart blow any HD I'd have in there? Anyway...this would be cool for those of you who want to have a small external drive on your compact, so keep your eyes open.
