Re: [CGUYS] 3D headphones

2009-01-16 Thread Eric S. Sande
My point was that stereo just doesn't cut it for FPS gaming
these days.

The headphones are cool. But as an audio guy I can tell
you for a fact that unless you are driving the elements in
the transducers out of separate channels of amplification
you will not realize surround sound. There is no way a two
channel feed can be transformed into 5.1 without multiple
feed lines.

That it is possible is true. These headphones appear to be
equpped with multiple feed lines. So the necessary conditions
have been met.

So I think what you've been saying is not bullshit. Now it's
up to Dr. Piwowar to do the research. And admit he was
wrong to not check the hardware out.

Thanks for the information, I think I'll stick with what I've
got since I don't do surround.

But that was very illuminating nevertheless. I rarely play
FPS but I can see where it would be a benefit.

To be clear, both MS and Toshiba had players go out on this bug. Toshiba
has a player called the gigabeat that also locked up on jan 1...but to Tom
it's only the zune that matters.

Right...same product, same bug that shut them down on Jan 1st...but you only
go after the one with the MS name and not the one with Toshiba. And then
you try and claim you don't have seething hatred for one particular company.

I do have and regularly use a registry cleaner. Doesn't help with this

Which one?

The one that I use is called Registry Mechanic.

Now this story: Five years ago or so I paid a one-time fee of about $30
for this software, and received updates for a while. Then last year I
noticed a credit card charge to Registry Mechanic of about $20. I
emailed RM and asked why this unauthorized charge was put on my credit
card. They said that I could have it removed, so I did. They removed
the charge but informed me that I was no longer authorized to use their
software and must delete same from my computer. Since this was
definitely not the original agreement that I had with them, I continue
to use it.

The registry cleaner is bundled with a registry optimization (I guess
compaction) program, as well as an optional resident program that
monitors any changes to the registry so that it can be restored when any
software is installed. Before cleaning the registry, a restore point is
always created.

[CGUYS] Mac Mail: Redirect vs. Forward

2009-01-16 Thread b_s-wilk

A friend of mine keeps forwarding formatted email from Mac Mail. It
arrives in my mail as a collection of disjointed pictures and broken
links, with full headers. I use Thunderbird for my email client. Haven't
been able to reproduce the jumble in either program.

What kind of settings in Mail could cause that? I guess she forwards
email by clicking on the Forward button in the toolbar. I don't know if
"Redirect" [in menu] will make a difference, mostly because she hasn't
done it yet, AFAIK.

She said tonight that other people get jumbled email from her too.
Is there a MIME setting in prefs to fix that? The default format is RTF,
which is odd, since it's nonstandard for email. I never liked Mac Mail.
This gives me another reason to dislike it even more. I don't think it's
Yahoo email problem because hers are the only messages I receive like
that.

Is this any help:
MIME-version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v624)
X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.624)
Content-type: multipart/mixed; boundary=Apple-Mail-12-178195691

That is what I mean about international.

You are living in Brazil but can establish a US phone number which
means US calls are low cost to you. If I were to call in Brazil to a
Brazillian # using my standard phone line it would cost me much more.

The safest way is to use a Registry cleaning utility. It will match up
what is on the computer with what is in the Registry. It will list
proposed changes for you to approve. Most will also back up your Registry
beforehand and give you a rollback file.

I am still using the Creative sound card.

According to the instructions, installing an updated driver creates a
problem because the registry entry for the old drive is not erased. (I
don't know if this info is correct.) BTW, there haven't been an updated
driver for the sound card since 2004.

Tony B wrote:

I don't see why removing these entries should hurt much of anything.
And a reboot would make sense. But what you don't make clear is if
you've actually removed the Creative card and are using a different
sound card now.? If not, can't you just reinstall the current Creative
drivers? It seems to me, altering registry entries if you're still
using the Creative card *is* asking for trouble.

PS I had this problem a while ago after upgrading to Vista and having
to remove my Creative Audigy (no driver support). I deleted the key
HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/ASIO .

As usual, if you're worried about deleting these keys, just rename them.

Yeah, but my cell phone doesn't work very well from my "desk" in the basement
of my house. I also don't like carrying it around. It's bulky in my pants
pocket; it's bulky affixed to my belt with a clip. No matter how I carry it, it
results in bruises or scratches from the keys in my pocket. So I really only
carry my cell phone when I'm out of the house. Magic Jack doesn't interfere
with my use of the computer. If I'm at my "desk" my computer is on 99.% of
the time. . . .

Walking to a better spot with my cell phone isn't really a good option, because
most of the calls I make involve taking notes and looking up information, best
done at my "desk" and often using the computer anyway. At less than $20 per
year, the cost of Magic Jack is very low in the noise of my finances.

As someone said earlier there is a way to trick you into hearing from
different directions with headphones, but it is a trick.

I have spatial hearing problems related to being exposed to loud
noises. (Tinnitus and hearing loss)

I do have Dolby Surround Sound on my system, but unless the rear
channels are really pumping out sound I cannot hear it.

Also note that there is a delay setting on some Surround Sound
systems to help with the spatial effect of hearing from different
directions. (Mine allows up to 29ms.)

Re: [CGUYS] MagicJack question

2009-01-16 Thread RLeeSimon
I got PhonePower.com (which had a 10% off deal at the time) and $199/year
with 2nd year free (except fed & state fees) ...the performance is
unbelievably great ...it also has "cloned line" which means while you are on
a call another person can pick up another phone and make or receive a call
simultaneously. When you get a message, it can be gotten the usual way or
you can hear it as a .wav file in your email or on their website secure. I
am thrilled with it. No popup; it works just like a regular phone. The
phone modem is BEHIND my router; they supply it for nothing, you pay
shipping only. I was able to port my number. During the 2 week port
process (caused by delay from Verizon) you can use the outbound immediately.
Cost to call international numbers (we do that) is very low. Sound quality
is FAR SUPERIOR to Verizon POTS. My internet is only DSL speed even though
it's cable (limited basic Comcast). Check it out. If you mention my email
address, we BOTH get some kind of bonus!

I doubt you can disable the notice to any effective degree. Without of
course, disabling the telephone. Simply unplug the MJ.

A much better solution for VOIP would be something like Vonage, which has a
"magic jack" that connects straight to your router, and a regular telephone
jack on the other end. So when you get a call, the telephone rings, instead
of popping up a window on your computer.

OK, I'm confused. I have the "standard" Magic Jack" interface device, which
plugs into a USB port and accepts an RJ-11 plug from a common telephone cord.
I presumed that is what is being called the "dongle," as it is small in size,
about 3 in. long by an inch wide by 3/4 inch thick. There is no separate
"dongle" (password device) required in my setup. Is that what everyone else
has? I would not call it a "large device." Maybe early adopters got a large
device and hardware version 2.0 is the "dongle"?

It just makes more sense to me to hook to the net via the router, not

But you can carry the Majic Jack dongle with you and plug it into any computer,
anywhere, that has broadband access (so it's advertised, I haven't tried it).
The "dongle" is an interface. Vonage requires an interface. You can't plug a
telephone RJ-11 plug directly into the RJ-45 jack on a router. How big is the
Vonage interface/dongle? Can you take it with you and plug it into any router
anywhere? Does it require independent AC power? The Magic Jack is powered
from the USB port.

One does need to remember an account number and password (IIRC, maybe just a
password) for first installation of Magic Jack on a particular computer, but
that's it. The software needed to run Magic Jack is stored in ROM in the
dongle. I don't use the Magic Jack for hot incoming calls. If the party
calling me leave a voice mail message, I receive an e-mail message with the
voice mail message attached as a .wav file. (maybe mp3?) That's good enough
for my purposes. It's an extra phone line at home. So both my wife and I can
be on the phone at the same time. And saves $ for toll calls.

Measured bandwidth used by the Magic Jack is approx 80kb -- a little bit faster
than a 56kb dialup modem, but a very small fraction of the bandwidth available
from any kind of broadband connection.

[CGUYS] 3D headphones

It's a shame we can't embed a picture in this day and age. But take a
look at these headphones at:
http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/efhpx/home.aspx

It should be obvious to anyone looking at the placement of the
speakers inside the headphones that it's quite easy to tell the
difference between the front one and the other ones. Again, nobody's
claiming these give you a great degree of realism, but when you must
use headphones, gamers CANNOT settle for less than surround models. My
point was that stereo just doesn't cut it for FPS gaming these days.

Please read the Wikipedia article on "sound_localization" before joining
this discussion. This is the Computer Guys, not the Psychic Friends
Network.

The limiting factor is that we have 2 ears and with headphones the
location of the ears and the sound source is fixed. All timing
differences can do is simulate a 2D 360-degree field. To get 3D something
else has to happen and it can't happen because the headphones are clamped
to your head, thus in fixed position relative to your ears.

So you get 2D: N, S, E, W, NE, NW, etc., but no up and down (no 3D).
