directly.

 3. Listings automatically expire after one year. (No more outdated listings!)

 4. Space managers are automatically reminded to renew their listing in advance

 5. It offers an optional way for listing owners to support ongoing

 6. Once ready, it will allow us to retire the outdated Visa wiki page. (HOORAY)

I hope you all don't mind if I dive right in and answer OP's original questions
based on my experience over the last 3-4 years of helping coworking communities
share buying-power.
1. No. Perks-based marketing is a zero-sum game. Fighting for exclusivities
will not only be pointless unless you can scale to 100s of 1000s of members;
but will waste hundreds of hours of your teams time. Rather understand that
every single space will need to focus on creating long-term business value to
differentiate themselves in the future.
2. I believe that if done correctly, 'solutions' will become one of the
coworking sectors strongest revenue sources. We have designed a thorough
revenue-share model and technology for our partner coworking communities, but
they know just as well as we do, that these things take time to build and
should be seen as a powerful new channel that needs to be cultivated without
distracting core team members and members away from their actual tasks of
running their businesses.
3. If the spaces are paying for the solution, are they not then the customers?
Every single one of our 250+ communities are our partners and not our customers
in this sense. We'd rather work together to drive up value for members,
increase revenue for the space and make coworking even more of a no-brainer.
Some spaces are willing to pay for such services though, and we've instead
asked them to give breakfasts to their new members with that cash :)
I hope those answers are useful, and I'd be more than happy to elaborate on
either of them if anyone finds that useful.
Have an amazing day!

People are using their computers (or even special dedicated computers) to
the mining of cryptocurrencies. This means, essentially, they're turning
electricity and computing power into money.
In many cases it's not worth it to do this, because the cost of the
electricity to run a computer at full blast 24x7 for weeks on end doesn't
generate enough revenue to justify the expense.
But if someone sets up some of these stations inside a coworking space,
then you're footing the bill on their behalf.
So if you've noticed a sudden inexplicable spike in power consumption in
your space, investigate to see if there are any crypto miners in your
midst!

I haven't heard stories of this happening yet, but I'd be surprised if it
doesn't happen eventually if it's not happening already.

2. You can build a workspace without doing coworking.
There's a whole industry of serviced offices that has been around for a while.

There's lots of established competition in this world, and it's entirely

3. You can build a workspace with coworking in mind.
Coworking exists regardless of office space; physical workspaces just happen to

Many in the business center industry are scrambling to change their spaces to

The point here is that lots of people don't need workspace, but they do need

I think coworking will become a new venture for me, one that I'm very
excited to be a part of, and to begin with I like the idea of being able to
focus on building a community and a space, without the distractions of
running an agency at the same time and in time, I hope to explore other

No doubt I will be frequenting this forum on countless occasions in the

There is a ton of precedent for agencies that create "hybrid" spaces that
are part company office, part community space. Each side of the business
helps to support the other.
It's one of the few sustainable models I've found for coworking on a
smaller scale!

Hi all,
I'm new to the group and currently looking at opening a coworking space in
Leicester, UK.
One of the reasons why I'm interested in building a community is to make
connections with developers and other contacts as potential collaborators
in the various entrepreneurial ideas that I have.
Currently I run a traditional design agency which is predominantly print
based and because we're based in a "standard" office at an out of town
office park the opportunities to meet new people and make new contacts are
limited, particularly in the web/app development arena.
As I'm looking at moving on and doing something different in the not too
distant future, coworking looks like a really good fit for me personally
and also professionally, and I was wondering if any other coworking
managers/hosts have any experiences of working with people who operate in
their spaces?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Posters in the bathroom - right in front of where people are doing their
business!!!

We also have small Meet Up groups in our place everyday and we remind
people there.

I took an online course about slack to make better use of it.
I felt I was using 10% of it!

Just because everyone says "I use slack" does not mean they are using it
it's full potential.

Sorry guys - While I agree with "meet them where they are" - facebook and
LinkedIn are hell hole time sucks and should be avoided at all costs

When the OuiShare gang moved from Facebook to Slack and telegram a few
years ago we all got our lives back!

We tried Group Buzz but our community was too small and not up for it.

We'll give Group Buzz another go later in the year - my message here is
don't expect an app to give you comunuty!!

Last of all - go and say hello to members and get them on your weekly email
newsletter - make sure that newsletter does not suck!

We do a weekly email based around the topics of our meet ups - writing,
project planning, blogging, art and OuiShare.

BTW all the above suggestions have come from this Google group over the
last few years - thanks x

[Coworking] Google Calendar Room Booking App - Do You Know One?

2017-03-23 Thread Bernie J Mitchell
Boys and Girls,

We are looking for something SUPER SUPER simple that will enable members to
book their own time in the meeting room here @Work Hubs.

Phil has a Google Apps account and even when the Meeting Room calendar is
shared and set to 'public' it stays on 'view only'.

If you know of a very light touch meeting room booking software that works
with Google Calendar that would work too.

A full blown CRM / room booking/event suite/coworking software package
would be overkill.

Thanks ;-)

[Coworking] Why I HATE this book: - Coworking Out Loud: How to Grow Your Collaborative Community and Strengthen Your Brand with Content Marketing

2017-03-03 Thread Bernie J Mitchell
Hey! I am not on commission, nor do I owe Cat money.

Why do I hate this book?
Because it is the book I wish I had written (this AND 1984 By George
Orwell)

This *FREE ebook - is very well researched and presented. It boils through
all the coworking, inbound, content, blah blah noise and gets to the core
basics.

For all of you coworking space owners, tummlers and community managers who
*only
*send an email or post a blog when you need something - save us all by
reading and taking action with Cat's book ;-)

The tool's that Cat mentions like Trello, Buffer and Mailchimp continue to
work well for our projects in OuiShare and coworking.

This is the link to get the eBook from Amazon - https://goo.gl/jLlccD

Love Bernie ;-)

*FREE
1. I hate it when people write free in capitals but it seems the only way
to get some people's attention.

Re: [Coworking] coworking beyond sharing office space

2017-02-21 Thread Bernie J Mitchell
Hi Caner and everyone!

Here are some places to look:

1. https://coliga.co/ - these guys run Agora in Berlin and we are looking
to set it up in our space here in London.

2. Look up 'value accounting' that is how OuiShare Fest team organise 'who
gets what' https://goo.gl/lRTFzU

3. We were at the Open-Coop event in London https://goo.gl/3D0yeh and
recorded podcasts that touched on this topic https://goo.gl/uBgTeO - it is
something that interests both me and my co-host Trevor from Coworking
Niagara.

4. Also double shout out to Alex's Enspiral and https://www.loomio.org/ -
we use Loomio in OuiShare, and I'd like to make more of this in other
places.

5. Every time I have been part of a project that is 'people working
together' there have been tears, that is not to say it is not worth it - I
LOVE the idea and my deep interest in all the points above stem from
wanting to look for a way to make it work.

What to look out for is - everyone else thinks someone else will do the
"biz dev and the close" - event the person who says they'll do it does not
;-)
People underestimate the effort they need to put in and also how long other
people's parts take. Example 'a few quick changes' on a website is NEVER a
10-minute job.

I hope that helps ;-)

Hi Alex, what I mean is that I work at an office with four spare desks; we're

great location with good amenities but I've been having trouble trying to find
people who would be interested (and I know that they're out there!)
Hi Jeannine, you're exactly right. We have some empty desks and we're looking

I may have already posted this but I couldn't find it-I'm new here. Apologies if
I have.
I understand that hiring a desk in a company versus hiring a desk in a huge
coworking building (like the ones wework establishes) are both in some ways
quite different; or are they?

From what I understand, people tend to look into coworking when they want:

-To set a routine for their lives and their work as self employed individuals-To
work alongside like minded people or those in the same position-To network with
others-To be a part of a bigger community
So my question is; how do you promote the idea of desk spaces in a company
versus in a community of freelancers? How can you make it sound more appealing,
and how do you reach a market that would rather do their work in an office with
zero distractions and good amenities in a great location?
I've posted advertisements for our office on so many websites, tried to promote
on facebook groups, and I've been looking on freelancer websites, yahoo, quora,
and now google-how can I reach the kind of audience we want?
All help is super, super appreciated.

I think it depends WHY you have a blog. The story telling aspect is the key for
me and using the blog to conect with PEOPLE rather than "marketing" is the
process I'd recommend.
So when you are creating content it is easy as it is an extension of what is

succeed in. I still really want to work for a coworking space in the NYC area,

bothers me. You are supposed to sign up something on the order of one a day,
every day, for a couple months without any kind of support?
I am also a little curious also about the hard number: is that 250 irrespective
of level of use of the physical space?
Anyway, the only way I know of to achieve 250 in a couple of months is to set
up a sales funnel and move them on through. What's your closing rate? I mean at
10% which is a nice round number, you have to have 250 (sales)/ .1 (success
rate) = 2500 prospects X .25 (3 months selling cycle) = 625 prospects in funnel
at any given time.
Those kinds of numbers require discipline and data. Not just for the sales but
as Alex says, for the onboarding and integration into the existing.
It is an interesting challenge, really, but what kind of budget and/or
resources do you have to work with?

Hey everyone!
Do any of you here record podcasts for your coworking community? What’s
happening, tips, tricks, cool conversations, and that sort of thing?
I’m planning one for ours, and was looking for some segment ideas.
Also happy to share our format concept once it’s put together over the next
week.

Don't most virtual-assistants contract themselves out to a number of clients,

It strikes me that each member could simply choose to hire the services of a
VA, independently of each other.
If they all choose the same VA, and that person happens to live in the
neighbourhood, and has a membership in the same space - that's just gravy.

Re: [Coworking] Suicide of a Member

2016-03-19 Thread Bernie J Mitchell
Angel - thanks for sharing this.

I've come across gallons of depression in working for yourself and just
trying to make life work - this story will strike a chord with many in my
community.
No just to be clear, no one has committed suicide but the dark stuggles are
certainly there.

As Tony said - Hugs ;-)
