This piece is interesting. It should be no surprise to anyone that the
heavy-handedness that permeates our FDA and DEA in adjudicating all manner of things
to be "bad for us", including smoking (which probably IS bad for you), and drugs
(which MIGHT be bad for you under certain circumstances), while at the same time
telling us that PRESCRIPTION medication that is a PROFITABLE enterprise for LARGE
PHARMACEUTICAL companies (many with ties to Nazi Germany) are A-Okay (even though they
kill tens of thousands of people every year)has a connection to Nazi Germany and their
"science". Much of our governmental infrastructure, especially that involving
science, hard as well as soft sciences was inherited from and infiltrated by the
Nazi's after WWII. It is my firm belief that you have every right to smoke as much as
you want of whatever you want, no matter what it may or may not do to you, and no one
has any right to tell you that you can't. I was heartened by the story earlier this
week that had the FDA losing in the supreme court over tobacco regulation.

By arguing and quibbling over small details, you are playing into the
hands of the conspirators. Small details (in the grand perspective)
like who belongs to what "cult" and details of religious practice, are
red herrings, designed BY the people who perpetuated the crimes against

important matters, exposing the criminals and bringing them to justice.

[CTRL] The Nazi War on Smoking

-Caveat Lector- http://www.ctrl.org/">
 -Cui Bono?-

from:
The Nazi War on Smoking, by Lauren A. Colby

November 5, 1999

Recently, we have been bombarded by a series of
articles and TV documentaries, extolling the war
against smoking conducted by authorities in Nazi
Germany. These articles praise the Nazis for their
foresight and vision, in "discovering" that smoking
causes lung cancer (as well as nearly every other
disease known to man).

All of this stems from a book, written by Robert N.
Proctor, entitled "The Nazi War on Cancer". In the
book, Proctor goes on and on, raving about the great
work the Nazis did in finding a cure for cancer: i.e.,
the abolition of tobacco smoking. In page after page,
Proctor describes and praises the work of the Nazi
scientists. He is, however, long on hyperbole and
adulation and short on descriptions of any real
scientific studies, until we get to page 194, where we
are told about "an exquisite piece of scholarship" by
one Hans Muller who, in a paper published in 1939,
finally "proved" that smoking causes lung cancer. Let's
take a look at this "exquisite piece of scholarship".

What Muller did was to send a questionnaire to the
relatives of deceased lung cancer victims. The
questionnaire read as follows:

"1. Was the deceased Herr_ a smoker? If so, what
his daily consumption of cigars, cigarettes, or pipe
tobacco? Please be numerically precise in your answer!

2. Did the deceased smoke at some point in his life and
then stop? Until when did he smoke? If he did smoke,
what was his daily consumption of cigars, cigarettes or
pipe tobacco. (Please be precise!)

3. Did the deceased ever cut down on his smoking? How
high was his daily use of tobacco products, before and
after he cut back? (Please be precise!)

4. Can you say whether the deceased was ever exposed to
polluted air for any length of time, either at work or
off the job? Did this unclean air contain smoke, soot,
dust, tar, fumes, motor exhaust, coal dust or metallic
dust, industrial chemicals, cigarette smoke, or similar
substances?"

Muller's paper does not state exactly how many
questionnaires were sent out but he advised that 96
"cases" were obtained - 86 males and 10 females (which
seems strange, since the questionnaire, by its express
language, referred only to males). Anyway, the 86 males
were divided into five classes: extremely heavy smoker,
very heavy smoker, heavy smoker, moderate smoker, or
non-smoker. The same was done for a group of 86
"controls" of the same age as the cases.

Proctor tells us that the results were "stunning"; the
lung cancer victims were more than six times as likely
to be extremely heavy smokers as the controls. 16% of
the healthy group were non-smokers as opposed to 3.5%
of the lung cancer victims. The lung cancer victims
smoked a total of 2,900 grams of tobacco per day; the
healthy controls smoked only 1,250 grams.

While Proctor may have considered this to be an
"exquisite piece of scholarship", I demur. To me, it is
a piece of trash. Why?

Well, for starters, we don't know how Muller selected
either the lung cancer victims or the controls. Since
he didn't tell us how many questionnaires he sent out,
he was free, if he wished, to select from the
questionnaires that came back, and cull out "faulty"
questionnaires, just as do election judges in Chicago,
when picking which ballots to be accepted or rejected.
Furthermore, he was free to select his controls - the
healthy people - on any criterion he might choose.

Even more important, Muller compared apples with
oranges. He compared the recollections of relatives
concerning the smoking habits of the deceased lung
cancer victims, with the recollections of living people
concerning their own smoking habits. That is a "no-no".
Whenever the survivors of dead people are asked about
the deceased's smoking habits, they always exaggerate
those habits. In Germany in the 1930's, as in the U.S.
today, a virulent propaganda campaign was underway,
blaming smoking for lung cancer and almost every other
disease known to man. Thus, when Hermann's widow was
asked how much he smoked, her natural tendency was to
visualize Hermann with a deadly cigarette in his mouth
and respond, "He smoked a lot".

A reverse bias existed, for the healthy controls.
Propaganda Minister Goebbels had been saturating the
German press with advertisements and articles,
suggesting that smokers were nearly as bad as Jews.
Thus, when the living people were asked about their
smoking habits, a strong bias existed to minimize the
amount that they smoked. Simple conformity dictated
that a Good German, like his leader, Adolf Hitler,
didn't smoke or at least, didn't smoke very much - and
the Germans were a very conformist people.

At the end of his book, Proctor cites figures, provided
by the American Cancer Society and some German group
called "Krebsforschungszentrum", purporting to show
that the lung cancer death rate in West Germany in 1952
was 2

STRATFOR.COM Global Intelligence Update
24 March 2000

German Military Weakness Complicates European Security Futures

Summary

Falling in line with a popular sentiment against increased military
spending, all mainstream German political parties except one favor
significant cuts in the size of the German Armed Forces. Even the
conservative Christian Democrats, in a position paper released
March 21 on the future of the German Armed Forces, favors cutting
its overall size. Reduced German military effectiveness will have
significant implications for the future of NATO, its ability to
defend new and potential members in the east, as well as the
proposed European Defense and Security Identity.

Analysis

Fears that a resurgent Germany will become a dominant military
force in Europe are misplaced. It is more likely Germany's military
will shrink relative to its population and GDP. A position paper on
the future of the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, authored by
the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), favored cutting the
overall size of the force to 300,000 from its current level of
almost 340,000. Support for the German military continues to wane
among the German population as cuts in social spending are matched
- or even exceeded - by cuts in military spending.

Germany is now set on a course where its defensively organized
forces will rapidly lose military effectiveness and the capability
for forward deployments. This will have serious implications for
both NATO and any planned European Defense and Security Identity
(EDSI). Most of all, it will complicate the security picture for
Germany's eastern neighbors - particularly Poland and the Baltics -
which are counting on the ability of the Bundeswehr to defend them
from potential Russian threats.

Germany's politicians are having a tough time convincing voters to
continue spending billions to modernize the German military while
they make cuts in social benefits. The CDU leadership's proposal
favoring military reduction reflects this popular sentiment. Now,
all mainstream German political parties except the Christian Social
Union (CSU) favor significant cuts in the size of the Bundeswehr.
The Greens' recommendation is the most severe, calling for German
armed forces of between 200,000 and 240,000 and an end to
compulsory military service.

Since the end of the Cold War, it has become extremely difficult
for Germany to justify defense outlays against obvious Russian
weakness. Instead, Germans continued to emphasize commercial
opportunities in Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe. This policy
was even more eagerly embraced with the decreased Russian threat
after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

To reassure the Russians and other neighbors after German
reunification, German armed forces were cut to 350,000. In 1992,
France - with two-thirds of Germany's GDP - surpassed Germany in
defense spending. In 1999, France spent $15.8 billion more than
Germany on its military.

The Social Democrat (SPD) and Green government that came into power
in 1998 continued to focus on Germany's trade relations with the
East. The Greens, many of whom led 1980s anti-NATO protests, are
pacifist in nature and have always opposed the military. And while
the SPD leadership is generally more hawkish, strong pacifist
elements exist within the party ranks.

Current government plans call for a reduction in defense spending
from its 1999 level of $23.5 billion to $21.5 billion by 2003. Even
before this reduction, Germany spends - as a percentage of GDP -
less on its military than Hungary, Poland or the Czech Republic.
While the opposition CDU proposal does envision higher defense
spending - at $24.8 billion - than current government levels, it is
still significantly lower than Germany's 1998 defense spending of
$28.8 billion and half of what Germany spent as recently at 1992.

U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen, in January 2000, strongly
criticized Germany for reducing its military forces. He said
Germany set a bad example for new NATO members. In response, German
Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping said it was difficult to spare
defense spending while Germany's government was cutting programs
across the board. In Germany, the Finance Ministry and not the
Defense Ministry is dictating defense outlays - cuts that Scharping
has been powerless to resist.

But Germany's eastern neighbors - particularly new NATO member
Poland and NATO aspirants in the Baltic states - are looking to
Germany to provide much of their defense capability. The loss of
which leaves these countries in an uncomfortable position vis-a-vis
the Russians. An improperly equipped 225,000-man German armed force
will be hard-pressed to face a resurgent Russian threat - even if
the political will could be summoned to forward-deploy German
forces.

Poland and the Baltic states are left with tw

Upcoming Vote on WTO Withdrawal!

Action Needed: Write to your representative and both of your senators
demanding that they vote in favor of H.J.Res. 90, a bill to get the U.S. out
of the dangerous World Trade Organization. Also, get your friends, neighbors
and associates to do the same.

Status: A floor vote before the full House and Senate is a virtual certainty
by the first week of June. Under rules set up by the original WTO agreement,
the House and Senate must consider legislation under privileged procedures
that all but guarantee a vote within (approximately) 90 days of introduction
of the bill.

Summary: If passed, this bill would get the United States completely out of
the World Trade Organization. Like most good legislation, H.J.Res. 90 is
short. Here is the entire text of the bill:

"Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of
America in Congress assembled, That the Congress withdraws its approval,
provided under section 101(a) of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act, of the WTO
Agreement as defined in section 2(9) of that Act."

Gov’t-Sanctioned Racial Profiling

“Affirmative action is wrong and I am wholeheartedly committed to ending it.
Any government program that places a person’s race or gender over ability is
anti-American.”

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

“John McCain returned to the Senate this week followed by a host of cameras.
Up to now, of course, the television networks have been eager to report his
every utterance on campaign finance reform. But not this time. They chose
to black out his assertion that Al Gore ‘has no credibility’ in calling for
reform until there is ‘a complete and full investigation’ of the ‘incredible
abuses of the institutions of government’ by the 1996 Clinton/Gore campaign.
The McCain statement was carried by Fox News and CNN, but the three major
networks didn’t mention it in their coverage Tuesday evening. This continues
a current practice of pretending that news about the Vice President’s ethics
problems don’t exist. The first decision not to cover involved the
conviction in a federal court of Gore Buddhist-temple fundraiser Maria Hsia.
This was followed by the decision not to cover the leaked memos on the status
of the Clinton/Gore investigations, written by Justice Department official
Charles La Bella and FBI Director Louis Freeh.”

Those Who Ignore the Past...

“When Republicans abandon their conservative/libertarian bloc of voters, they
don't expand their base, it evaporates. The political graveyard is full of
contemporary examples. Gerald Ford. George Bush. Bob Dole. The Republicans
in Congress in 1998. All retreated from the tax cutting/limited government
theme of the GOP and got punished at the polls. Undeterred by history,
Republican campaign strategists want to dust off this playbook one more time
for campaign 2000. It will almost assuredly yield the same unhappy returns.”

- Stephen Moore, The Cato Institute, 3/17/00

CFG: An Idea Who’s Time Has Come

“Seldom has anger toward Congress been more intense than it is today. For 30
years conservatives and libertarians labored mightily to wrestle control of
Congress away from a Democratic party that has been mostly captured by the
left at the national level. Most of us believed that electing a Republican
Congress would bring about the kinds of major policy reforms - tax cuts,
school choice, less wasteful government, and so on - that are so critical to
advancing prosperity. We now know that was a naive hope. Congressional
Republicans have veered away from the limited government agenda that got them
elected to the majority in Congress. They have enacted budget deals with Bill
Clinton that betray our limited government beliefs. They have approved
pork-barrel highway bills worse than what the Democrats used to give us. They
have dropped the ball on tax cuts, tax reform, and personal investment of
Social Security. And they paid a deserved price for these policy retreats at
the polls in November of 1998.”

- Reason for starting “Club for Growth,” (CFG) a new organization dedicated
to electing more “Reaganites” to Congress (http://www.clubforgrowth.org/).

GOP Liberals Going Ballistic Over CFG

“Liberal Jim Greenwood (R-Pennsylvania) calls the Club for Growth
‘cannibals.’ GOP wets such as New York's Sherwood Boehlert and New Jersey's
Marge Roukema - whose primary rival, Scott Garrett, the Club supports -
recently demanded that House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois) get the Club
off their backs. ‘We aren't going to be bullied by the GOP establishment
into backing down on championing pro-growth challengers to liberal
incumbents,’ (CRG co-founder Stephen) Moore told me. Excellent. Fighting
big-government Republicans in primaries avoids the typical dilemma that
loyal, pro-market GOP voters face each November: to boot or not to boot
counterproductive Republicans, especially if they will be replaced with even
more spendthrift Democrats. At best, the Club for Growth will spur voters to
substitute GOP deadwood with Republicans who will work sedulously for
individual liberty, free markets and an ever-shrinking state. At worst,
confronting GOP invertebrates will force them to grow spines to ward off
primary opponents.”

Buchanan Vows Taxes on Oil Nations
By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Taking a hard line on a pocketbook issue, Reform
Party presidential candidate Pat Buchanan promised Thursday to slap new
tariffs on oil-producing nations that systematically withhold their product
to
''gouge the American people.''

With gas prices rising dramatically since last summer and expected to cost
$2 per gallon by summer, Buchanan charged a global conspiracy'' by these
countries to inflate prices.

At a news conference here, he pledged to cut financial aid, including World
Bank and International Monetary Fund loans, to any country he deemed part
of a plot to ''withhold oil and gouge the American people.''

Buchanan's rivals for the White House -- Republican George W. Bush and
Democrat Al Gore -- also have weighed in on the issue, and with different
approaches.

Earlier this month, Bush said he was considering calling for the suspension
of a 4.3 cents-per-gallon increase in the federal gas tax to combat the
rising
prices. Gore disagrees with that proposal and said the solution is ''tough
negotiating'' with the organization of oil-producing countries.

Buchanan is in California for a swing of public appearances and fund-raisers,
although he said he did not know how much money he would raise.

''All we need is enough to keep me and (wife) Shelly on the road until our
convention, and then thanks to the generosity of the American taxpayer
we're going to get $12.5 million, which will be enough to run our bus across
the country,'' he said.

Subject:Major General Smedley Butler

Historical Perspective forwarded by Bill White:

Smedley Butler on Interventionism

-- Excerpt from a speech delivered in 1933,
by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as
something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a
small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the
benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses.

I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If
a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with
America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it
gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag
follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.

I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy
investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight
for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of
Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.

There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang
is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle
men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a
"Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism.

It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison.
Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months
in active military service as a member of this country's most agile
military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks
from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent
most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for
Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster
for capitalism.

I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure
of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a
thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained
in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is
typical with everyone in the military service.

I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil
interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the
National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping
of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall
Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua
for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912
(where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the
Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I
helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.

During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say,
a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al
Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in
three districts. I operated on three continents.

Poll: Voters Find Bush 'Arrogant'

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Since wrapping up the GOP presidential nomination,
George W. Bush has been sounding like a sore winner, making acid remarks
about Al Gore and dismissing former Republican rival John McCain. Voters
are starting to tell pollsters the Texas governor is ''cocky'' and
''arrogant.''

With his Texas swagger and a look that some voters describe as a smirk,
the governor's remarks on everything from the election to executions have
renewed questions about whether he's ready for his prime-time presidential
run.

A new Pew Research Center poll suggests Bush is being hurt by it all.

Among people who now support his Democratic rival, Vice President Al
Gore, the percentage who dislike Bush because of his personality has
jumped from 19 percent in October to 33 percent. The figure for Gore among
Bush supporters is 22 percent, compared to 24 percent in October.

And 31 percent of all the poll's respondents chose a negative term when
asked the one word that best described Bush, compared to 12 percent who
thought of a negative term first a year ago.

While the majority of references to Bush were positive, the most frequently
mentioned negative words were ''arrogant,'' ''dislike,'' ''untrustworthy,''
''wimp,''
''bad'' or ''cocky.''

The most frequently mentioned negative word for Gore was ''boring,'' and
''dull'' was second, tied with ''politician,'' undefined as to positive or
negative.
Next on the negative list came ''dishonest'' and ''incompetent.''

Fred Greenstein, a political science professor at Princeton University, said
Bush risks being labeled ''a non gravitas wise guy -- that is something he
has
got to put some effort into working on or walking away from'' if he is to win
in
November.

Perceived arrogance won't necessarily hurt, said Darrell West, professor of
political science at Brown University, ''if it leads people to view you as a
strong and effective leader.''

But Bill Mayer, a political science professor at Northeastern University,
said
that too often Bush's campaign seems to ''show him off in ways that
accentuate the notion that he is not very substantive ... has no great reason
to appear so cocky.''

In an interview published Thursday in The Washington Post, the Texas
governor launched into unsolicited and repeated criticism of the vice
president.

Asked directly whether Gore has the honesty and integrity to serve as
president, Bush replied: ''That's what I'd like to know and that's what
America
would like to know.''

The remarks came a week after Bush got into political hot water by coming
off as dismissive of McCain, his closest rival for the GOP nomination.

In an interview with The New York Times, Bush was asked whether the
Arizona senator had raised his consciousness about reform.

Bush replied, ''No, he didn't change my views.'' Bush also said he had no
intention of making concessions to McCain on campaign finance reform.

While the governor later softened his remarks about McCain, his initial
criticism mimicked remarks from his press secretary, who said when asked
about negotiating a settlement with McCain, ''Negotiations? Governor Bush
won.''

Bush didn't directly address the issue Thursday, but he touched on his
approach to Gore when answering a question about Social Security.

''I know people on the vice president's team don't like me to remind people
that this guy will say anything to get elected, but I'm going to,'' Bush said
at
a news conference held after he spoke to students at Colonial High School
here in central Florida.

''He's the man who said he invented the Internet; he didn't. He's the man who
said during a debate he was responsible for the Earned Income Tax Credit,
yet it was passed two years before his arrival in the U.S. Congress.

''I believe I can keep the tone right, because America wants somebody to
lead the country in the future, but I'm going to keep asking those
questions,''
Bush said.

Explanations aside, Bush's remarks -- and questions about his readiness to
be president -- have been recurring themes on the campaign trail:

-- During a debate on Dec. 6 in Phoenix, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, took a
playful jab at Bush that carried a serious charge: ''I really believe that
you
need more exp

000469. PA leader identifies importance of AF symbol

by Cynthia Minnick
11th Wing Public Affairs

BOLLING AIR FORCE BASE, D.C. (AFPN) -- If a picture is worth a thousand
words, a new symbol for the Air Force could be worth millions.

The symbol, which many Air Force people have seen in Online News and
elsewhere, is one part of an effort to more effectively tell the Air Force
story and present a unified image, said Col. Ron Rand, Air Force Director of
Public Affairs. He spoke recently to about 400 enlisted, officers, and
civilians as part of a professional development series here.

The effort is part of a larger plan to turn around recruiting and retention,
he added.

"Feedback from Air Force people will help us communicate more effectively,"
he said.

Rand started by addressing the most fundamental question: Why does the Air
Force need a symbol and theme?

The impetus for the symbol and theme -- the most visible parts of the
communication effort -- is not recent. Air Force senior leaders began
discussing it about two years ago, according to Rand.

"We recognized then the need to tell our story better, to help build
widespread public appreciation and understanding of the importance of our
mission, the quality of our people and the relevance of the work they do,"
he said.

"The answer is to build on our strong identity, develop a unifying symbol
and theme, and communicate a consistent story," said Rand.

Air Force officials recognized the need to employ experts for guidance and
hired a private firm specializing in corporate branding in order to develop
a total package to help the Air Force tell its story, said Rand. After
extensive research -- including surveys, focus groups and interviews with a
total of 10,000 people, both in and out of uniform -- the firm arrived at
some recommendations.

The research also yielded four strong themes regarding the Air Force:
individual achievement, smarts and technology, values, and a strong sense of
mission. The mission theme was strongest of all. The firm then helped the
Air Force articulate its identity and framed a strategy to communicate it to
airmen, potential recruits, and the public, said Rand. Part of the strategy
included creating a consistent visual image.

A prime piece of research showed that Air Force people don't feel
appreciated. "We work really hard, we make huge sacrifices, we leave our
families behind, all those kinds of things. All our people want is to be
recognized and appreciated for that," said Rand. "They don't have a sense
that the public understands how hard it is to be in the Air Force, how good
the work that we do is, and how well we do it."

"They came up with a symbol and theme they felt captured the huge range of
things we do, all the way from recruiting through retirement," explained
Rand. The new symbol is a contemporary interpretation of the Hap Arnold
logo, with a progressive, modern-looking design.

One of two proposed themes is "World Ready," derived from the concept that
the Air Force is "world class, mission ready." This concept addresses the
strongest of the four concepts from the research: a sense of mission. A
second theme under consideration was "Above and Beyond," which speaks to the
theme of individual achievement. Air Force leaders haven't made a final
decision on the theme or the symbol, he said. Instead, they'll test the
symbol in a variety of communication efforts.

A primary vehicle for communicating the Air Force's story is through the
upcoming national television advertising campaign. The new symbol will be
featured in the advertisements.

"By institutionalizing a symbol that is universally recognized by all, we
create name brand recognition for the Air Force," said Rand.

"Until recently, the Air Force has never advertised on TV. So the American
public rarely sees images of Air Force people at work, in humanitarian and
combat operations, and during worldwide contingencies," said Rand.

This year, the Air Force is purchasing television advertising time to the
tune of approximately $28.5 million.

"Besides helping in recruitment efforts, TV advertising will help the
general public understand the important work we do and how well we do it,"
he added.

Rand believes this is another important element to the advertising --
helping Air Force people gain an additional sense of appreciation for what
they do. And he thinks a well-recognized logo can foster cohesion.

Illustrating his point, Rand showed photos of base gates, none of which had
one consistent symbol or design. "No two base gates in the Air Force look
the same," said Rand. "Sometimes you have to struggle to find any obvious
tie to an organization called the U.S. Air Force."

Rand noted there is no single way we say very prominently that an item or
place represents the U.S. Air Force.

"However, we're not going to r

Another UFO Mystery

In the evening of April 5, 1967, the Justice of the Peace was driving
near Jonestown, Pennsylvania, when a UFO swooped down, stalled his car,
and gassed him. The J.P. suffered injuries from which he subsequently
recovered. In the horoscope for the event (7:45pm EST +5) the Moon's
North Node (ascending mean lunar node) was at 08Taurus17. (See: Mercury
Hour, a quarterly journal published in Lynchburg, Virginia. Editor and
publisher Edith Custer. The original source was in French from the data
provided by UFO researcher Jacque -?- Vallee. The original source is
fully described, in English, in a Mercury Hour edition published,
probably, in 1998.)

..The Tangshan, China, earthquake (more than one million perished)
occurred 28 July 1976. The Moon's South (descending lunar node) Node was
at 08Taurus10. Note the 180 degree reversal of the mean lunar nodes --
almost exact to the minute of arc.

..The Nevado del Ruiz volcanic eruption, Colombia, occurred 13
November 1985. Twenty-three thousand persons died in boiling mud. Moon's
North Node 08Taurus23 --
The mean node had returned to it's UFO position exact to within 6 minutes
of arc. This is extremely peculiar.

..The Jonestown, Guyana, suicides and murders occurred 18 November
1978. The mass dying was in progress at 4pm local time. A final total of
914 died. Horoscopically, the correspondences with the Jonestown UFO are
extraordinary and definitely alarming.

..Most of the dead in Jonestown, Guyana, were African-Americans from
San Francisco and the Bay Area. The Yana tribe of aboriginals was
systematically exterminated, by white vigilantes, in the Mill Creek area,
southwest of Mount Lassen, California, circa 1865-1872. The last
survivor, Ishi, died in a San Francisco museum prior to the great
earthquake and fire which destroyed much of San Francisco.

..The positions for the Moon's mean nodes are those calculated by
John Halloran's ASTROLDL computer program. The lunar nodes move clockwise
360 degrees in about 19 years, the Saros Cycle. The movement of the
planets (when not retrograde) is clockwise around the zodiac.

..Byron Wahl, 23 March 2000

Buchanan Says U.S. Must Respond to Oil `Conspiracy'
In San Francisco, he calls for end to foreign aid

Carla Marinucci, John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writers

Pat Buchanan, the Reform Party presidential hopeful, charged American
political leaders yesterday with sitting on their hands while oil-producing
countries engage in a ``price- rigging conspiracy'' to gouge American
consumers for billions of dollars at the gas pumps.

Charging that Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are ``engaged in a trade war
against this country,'' Buchanan called for the United States ``to retaliate
with economic weapons'' against oil-producers that he said are withholding
oil to jack up prices.

``As president of the United States, I would cut off all foreign aid . . . to any
nation which conspired to withhold oil and gouge the American people,'' the
fiery former host of CNN's ``Crossfire'' said. ``I would put tariffs on all those
(responsible) nations.''

The tough talk from the Republican-turned-Reform candidate came in San
Francisco yesterday, where Buchanan appeared at a Reform Party fund-
raiser. In good spirits, and wearing an eye-opening purple tie and lavender
shirt, Buchanan downplayed rifts that have torn the Reform Party,
culminating in the recent defection of its most famous elected leader,
Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. ``He said it was a dysfunctional party . . .
(but) he left and it's been functioning very, very well,'' Buchanan said.

Buchanan -- who will deliver the keynote address at an anti-war conference in
San Mateo today -- insisted the presidential race this fall will be a three-way
contest fought ``in the court of public opinion.'' But his greatest potential this
time around is clearly as a spoiler, the candidate who can siphon off votes,
particularly from Texas Gov. George W. Bush, the presumptive GOP
nominee.

And with his feisty words on the gas crisis, Buchanan touched on a hot-
button issue that threatens to put an otherwise placid electorate up in arms --
even in booming economic times. Armed with his populist message,
Buchanan has signaled that he means to remain a thorn in the side of
Democrat Vice President Al Gore and Bush until the election.

In a later interview with The Chronicle, Buchanan threw jabs at both major
party leaders. He:

-- Predicted that Bush, who is anti-abortion, should prepare for a mass
exodus of conservative GOP followers at the Republican National Convention
should he announce a pro-choice running mate like Pennsylvania Gov. Tom
Ridge. ``They should get out of the way of the exits . . . because the pro-life
people would be deserting in droves,'' Buchanan said.

-- Said that, while he is pleased Bush is being ``home-schooled in foreign
policy,'' he doesn't intend to let the Texas governor off the hook in a
presidential debate. ``The first question,'' Buchanan said with a mischievous
grin, ``is, `Who's the prime minister of Estonia?' ''

-- Vowed to continue his own fight to be on stage with both Gore and Bush in
nationally televised presidential debates in the fall. And once he's there,
boring will be banished, he promised. ``You'll be able to scalp tickets,'' he
said with a laugh.

-- Burst into sustained laughter when asked about Gore's attempt to seize
campaign finance reform as a campaign issue. ``It's great to know that
there's still entertainment in politics,'' he said.

Buchanan seized the opportunity in San Francisco to address issues that
have been the bread and butter of his past political efforts, such as
immigration.

In a departure from Gore and Bush, who have courted Silicon Valley,
Buchanan called for a freeze on the H1-B visas Silicon Valley companies
want expanded to bring more technically trained workers into the United
States.

``The first claim on those jobs should belong to young people and American
workers,'' Buchanan said. ``If (Silicon Valley companies) have to raise pay a
little to attract them, so be it.''

Buchanan also called for rolling back legal immigration to the United States,
now about 1 million people per year, to 250,000 or 300,000 for at least five
years. That would give the country time to deal with the new residents and
help avoid what he called the ``Balkanization'' he has seen in other countries
with unassimilated minorities.

Buchanan minced no words on illegal immigration.

``I will stop illegal immigration cold if it means putting the 82nd Airborne on
the California border,'' he said.

But Buchanan got most fired up on the gas issue, saying that Mexico, a
NAFTA trade partner, appears to be colluding with the Persian Gulf nations,
``who we defend with American blood and treasure.''

He called for exploratory drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in
Alaska, tariffs against OPEC nations and an end to all foreign aid t

Dead Calves Mystery
In Oregon Continues To
Baffle Officials

Authorities are stumped as to who dumped 11 dead Holstein calves - skinned
and mutilated - in the desert northeast of Millican over the weekend.

Why is high on their list, too.

Bend veterinarian Trish Kentner performed a necropsy Monday on two of the
animals and discovered their sexual organs had been removed and they had an
"unusually low" level of blood in their bodies, Central Oregon Humane Society
chief Kimball Lewis said.

Kentner said she was able to determine that the calves were dead before they
were skinned.

Tissue samples have been sent to Oregon State University for testing but,
since the animals had likely been dead several days, Kentner is not hopeful
the lab work will provide any answers.

A rancher found four of the dead calves Saturday a couple of miles north of
Highway 20 at mile marker 29. On Sunday, a recreational vehicle user reported
the other seven calves about a mile farther north.

The calves were discovered just a couple of miles from where 14 dead cattle
and a pig with its legs cut off were found last March.

While wild theories of satanistic cults and alien skulduggery are swirling
about Central Oregon, Lewis remains skeptical.

"I still emphasize there's probably a logical explanation," he said. "I'm
thinking it's probably cattle that died after calving."

Sometimes ranchers will take the skin of a dead calf and drape it over
another so the mother can identify with the scent, Lewis said.

"My guess is that's what's happened here," he said. "A lot of people are
coming out of the woodwork on stuff like this. I'm not buying into it."

Lewis has received several phone calls about the finding, including one from
a woman inviting him to be interviewed by late night talk show host Art Bell.
He declined.

The topic of cattle mutilations linked by some imaginative theorists to
bizarre and usually nefarious sources, has found fertile ground on the
Internet. A recent computer search yielded 177,488 potential hits for the
phrase cattle mutilation.

CITY OF BOSTON
IN CITY COUNCIL

March 1, 2000

RESOLUTION OF COUNCILLOR MAURA HENNIGAN (Passed unanimously, March 2, 2000)

WHEREAS: Genetically engineered foods have never been proven safe, nor are
genetically engineered foods tested by any federal agency as the Food and
Drug Administration requires only that the companies engineering these
foods state, on the "honor system" that the foods are safe with no further
testing required; and

WHEREAS: Cornell University researcher, John Losey, and other researchers
indicated in repeated tests that the larvae from Monarch Butterflies were
dying at an alarming rate from toxic pollen generated from the genetically
engineered corn near their feeding sites; and

WHEREAS: A class action lawsuit has been brought against the Food and Drug
Administration by some of the nation's most prominent anti-trust lawyers
for rushing these novel, unpredictable and untested food technology
products to the market; and

WHEREAS: Numerous bioengineers and related distinguished scientists have
gone on record stating this technology clearly is different from
traditional breeding methods and is highly probable to exhibit a host of
undesirable health and environmental risk factors as well as great
potential for negative cascade effects in the genetic cross-pollination of
beneficial plants, insects and other fragile ecosystems directly linked to
the breeding of this novel experimental food production technology; Now,
Therefore Be It

RESOLVED: That the Boston City Council, in meeting assembled, urges the
Federal Government to require labeling of genetically manipulated foods
and further urges a moratorium on the production of any more of these
foods until acceptable testing systems are in place; and Be It Further

RESOLVED: That March 26, 2000 be declared YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT DAY in the
City of Boston.

Mark Twain's Anti-Imperialist Writings: A Guide to Online Resources

By Jim Zwick

The Spanish-American War officially ended on December 10, 1898, with a peace
treaty that ceded Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States
and placed Cuba under U.S. control. Hawaii was annexed during the war. The
creation of an empire by the United States in 1898 provoked the most heated and
profound debate about U.S. foreign policy in the country's history, and the
intensity of the debate would not be matched again until the 1960s. "The nation
is divided, half patriots and half traitors, and no man can tell which from
which," Mark Twain commented in a March 1901 speech.

The Most Influential Anti-Imperialist
Mark Twain entered that debate on October 15, 1900, by declaring himself an
anti-imperialist in dockside interviews given upon his return to the United
States from nearly ten years living abroad. "I am an anti-imperialist. I am
opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land," he declared. He
quickly became one of the country's most prominent and outspoken opponents of
imperialism and the Philippine-American War. In February 1901 the Springfield
Republican (Mass.) editorialized that "Mark Twain has suddenly become the most
influential anti-imperialist and the most dreaded critic of the sacrosanct
person in the White House that the country contains."

Mark Twain's rise to prominence in the debate may have seemed sudden but his
views on the subject developed over most of his adult life. He first confronted
the issues involved with annexation of overseas territories when he went to
Hawaii in 1866. At first he saw the islands as a "half-way house on the Pacific
highway" that the United States should annex for their commercial potential,
but he soon changed his mind. By March of the following year his speeches on
Hawaii were highlighting the "disease" of civilization that was wiping out the
islands' original inhabitants. In 1867 he also published a sweeping satire of
the government's plan to buy the Danish West Indies island of St. Thomas.
Internationalist Solidarity

In 1891 Twain became one of the founding members of the American Friends of
Russian Freedom. Its stated object was "to aid by all moral and legal means the
Russian patriots in their efforts to obtain for their country Political Freedom
and Self-Government." It invited "the cooperation of all liberty-loving
American men and women whose sympathies are not restricted by geographical
boundaries and whose hearts can beat for the sufferings of others." The
organization's internationalist pursuit of self-govenment brought together a
number of people who would later join Twain as officers of the Anti-Imperialist
League formed in 1898 to oppose the creation of an American empire. Among them
was Twain's friend Thomas Wentworth Higginson who developed the
internationalist theme in an 1899 essay on the Philippines, "Where Liberty Is
Not, There Is My Country." Twain remained a supporter of the Russian Revolution
until his death, and he would criticize the Czar's imperial policies in a
number of his later writings.

In the mid-1890s Twain made the round-the-world speaking tour through the
British Empire recorded in Following the Equator. "The English are mentioned in
the Bible," he wrote: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."
He saw first-hand the treatment of indigenous peoples in Fiji, Australia,
India, and South Africa. Twain concluded a long description of Cecil Rhodes's
career in South Africa by stating, "I admire him, I frankly confess it; and
when his time comes I shall buy a piece of the rope for a keepsake." In a
December 1900 speech he described England and America as "kin in sin" for their
imperialist wars in South Africa and the Philippines.

Fighting for Freedom

Living in Europe during the Spanish-American War, Twain supported it for the
same reasons he later opposed the war in the Philippines. "It is a worthy thing
to fight for one's freedom," he wrote to his friend Joseph Twichell in June of
1898; "it is another sight finer to fight for another man's." After learning
that the war ended with a treaty that contradicted that goal of liberation,
Twain joined the opposition. Explaining his change of views to the reporters
who met him at the docks in New York, he said, "I have thought some more... and
I have read carefully the treaty of Paris. I have seen that we do not intend to
free, but to subjugate, the people of the Philippines. We have gone there to
conquer, not to redeem."

In 1904, Twain's championship of the anti-imperialist cause led to an
invitation to join the Congo Reform Association founded to end King Leopold's
brutal rule of the Belgian Congo. From 1905 to 1908 Twain served as one of its
vice pr

Medicating the mind (part 1)
by PETER B. RAABE

* Shadow Syndromes by Ratey & Johnson
* The Enigma of Health by Gadamer
* More articles by Peter Raabe

Many of the feelings that help define us as human beings, and help us cope with
human affairs, are now being diagnosed as disorders that need to be "corrected"
with psychotropic drugs. In fact, a recent issue of a popular magazine carries
advertisements for pharmaceutical products claiming to combat everything from
feeling uncomfortable in a crowd ("social-affective disorder") to excessive
worry ("adjustment disorder" or "depressive disorder" -- which may mean a man
still feeling low even though it has been six months since his spouse left
him). The advertising copy literally says swallowing the pills will end your
worries.

Some professional therapists are insisting that sadness, anger, depression, and
even the inability to finish a task have nothing to do with a person's
character, self-esteem, or internal belief system, but rather are "hidden
psychological disorders" or "shadow syndromes" (e.g., John J. Ratey and
Catherine Johnson, Shadow Syndromes (Pantheon, 1997). They believe "shadow
syndromes" are simply inherent in the structure and chemistry of the individual
brain, and recommend that these syndromes be treated with a regimen of powerful
medication. In the six years between 1990 to 1996, prescriptions in the United
States for the antidepressant fluoxetine (sold under the brand name "prozac")
rose from 136,000 to 2.5 million. The total number of prescriptions for all
similar medications written in 1996 alone was 5.4 million.

While the use of medicines to correct a mechanical malfunction in cerebral
biochemistry seems legitimate and justified, the use of psychopharmaceuticals
to control emotional distress, confusion, or depression is a highly contentious
issue for many philosophical counselors. This is because the use of drugs to
alter feelings or thoughts seems to be based on the faulty assumption that
feelings of distress must have originated in a chemical imbalance in the brain
because drugs can be used to change the brain's chemistry and thereby alleviate
feelings of distress.

The question of which came first, the feelings or the chemical imbalance, is a
chicken-and-egg problem. Research has shown that while the chemical activity
within the brain generates thoughts, thinking causes a change in the chemical
activity within the brain. In other words, the relationship between brain
chemistry and thinking is clearly reciprocal. This reciprocity is what causes
concern among philosophical counselors when medication is used to treat a
client in distress. They see the medication of the brain as a simultaneous
medication of the mind. By prescribing psychotropic drugs, the assumption that
causality rests in brain chemistry has been affirmed. The problem with this
assumption is that it relegates external reasons for emotional distress to a
place of lesser importance. The resultant predicament this causes can be
illustrated with the following case based on a true story.

"Stan," an average college student and a player on a winning basketball team,
visited a philosophical counselor with the consent of his psychiatrist. He was
taking both antidepressant and antipsychotic medication to combat what he
described as profound sadness, confused feelings, and anger that could erupt
seemingly for no reason. Stan explained how distressed he had been lately at
his having become unreasonably angry with his friend Karl. During the course of
discussion with the philosophical counselor the story emerged of how Stan
considered Karl to be a far better basketball player than himself, how Karl
never had any problems getting girls and always had several girlfriends at the
same time, and how Karl had recently charmed Stan's girlfriend away from him,
supposedly as a harmless joke. Stan said he could understand why his girlfriend
had left him and gone with Karl. He wondered if he was even worthy of a
girlfriend considering how poorly he played basketball compared to Karl. But
through all this he insisted Karl was a good friend, and that "all's fair in
love and war," even between friends. When asked to define what a friend is,
Stan responded that it is someone you respect but are inferior to.

Over the weeks that followed Stan told of how his mother had remarried when he
was young, how he had several younger step-siblings, and how his stepfather
treated "his own flesh and blood" with more love and respect than he felt Stan
deserved. His stepfather was quick to point out his faults, and never offered
to help Stan correct his mistakes. His stepfather taught Stan to develop a
negative view of the world, the people in it, and himself. Stan remembered
asking his stepfather questions t

Iceberg half the size
of Wales floats free

By Steve Connor, Science Editor

24 March 2000

A satellite camera has captured an iceberg
half the size of Wales breaking off from
an
Antarctic ice shelf. Scientists believe
it is one
of the biggest icebergs on record.

The iceberg, which has broken off from the
Ross Ice Shelf, is estimated to cover more
than 4,000 square miles, measuring 183
miles
long and 23 miles wide. The images were
taken from 700km up in space by the
American NOAA-12 polar-orbiting satellite.

"This is a very big iceberg, close to a
record if
not a new record. It's not often that you
seem
them of this magnitude," said Matthew
Lazzara, of the University of Wisconsin at
Madison. Iceberg "calving" is a natural
phenomenon and results from the continual
movement towards the Antarctic shore of
ice
and snow that falls over the frozen
continent.

David Vaughan, a glaciologist from the
British
Antarctic Survey, said the iceberg
captured by
a polar-orbiting satellite operated by the
American National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration may just fail to break the
record.

Dr Vaughan said: "It's a big one but its
not the
biggest. I've had it on good authority
that there
have been larger icebergs in the past."

Gore's Oil
by George Szamuely
New York Press
3/21/00
In September of 1995, as part of the pompously named National Performance
Review–Al Gore’s fatuous project to cut down government waste, fraud and
mismanagement–the Vice President boldly declared that he was recommending the
privatization of Elk Hills, a 47,000-acre oil-rich land in Southern California.
Since 1912 it had been in the possession of the U.S. Navy as an emergency oil
reserve. The oil companies salivated and made their bids. In October 1997 the
Energy Dept. announced that the U.S. government would sell its stake in Elk
Hills to Occidental Petroleum for $3.65 billion. Overnight, Occidental’s U.S.
oil reserves tripled. Occidental’s stock surged and its stockholders glowed.
One of them was the Vice President’s father, Al Gore Sr. He owned more than
$500,000 worth of Occidental stock. A clear conflict of interest? Not to the
airheads in the media. Neither then nor any time since have they evinced the
slightest curiosity about this deal. Or indeed about the Gore family’s long and
intimate connection with Occidental and, in particular, with its longtime
chairman, the shady and sinister Armand Hammer.

Hammer devoted his life to negotiating business deals with the former Soviet
Union. Following the 1917 revolution Hammer set up a bank in New York to
channel hard currency from Russian emigres into the hands of the Bolshevik
government. He also received money from the Bolsheviks that he distributed to
spies and underground agents here. In later years he ran a pencil factory in
the Soviet Union, the only Western capitalist permitted to operate in Stalin’s
Russia. In the 1930s, as the Soviet regime’s need for hard currency grew ever
more desperate, he was assigned the task of selling off Russian art in the West
and remitting the proceeds. A lot of this art had been stolen by the Bolsheviks
from its "capitalist" owners. A lot of it was junk. And a lot of it was forged.
In return for the money, the Soviets sent him oak staves from which he would
build beer barrels.

None of Hammer’s enterprises made much money He was continuously on the verge
of bankruptcy until the 1960s, when by extraordinary persistence–and a lot of
bribery–his company, Occidental Petroleum, won a lucrative oil concession in
Libya. At last, he had serious money to play with.

Hammer could not have prospered during the Red Scare, the Cold War and the
McCarthy era had he not had powerful friends. It was no easy feat to persuade
the world that he was no red–just a businessman trying to make a buck. One man
who was very helpful to him in this regard was Sen. Albert Gore Sr. In 1950
Hammer had taken Congressman Gore on as a partner in his cattle-breeding
business. He also sent him annual Christmas gifts of antique silver. And Gore
repaid Hammer in kind. In the late 1950s he introduced him to Sen. John F.
Kennedy. After the 1960 election Gore proposed to Kennedy that he use Hammer as
his personal envoy in any future Berlin crises. While Hammer did not get the
Berlin assignment, Kennedy did have an important mission for him. The President
had been informed that Soviet crabmeat was produced by slave labor. Gore
suggested that he send Hammer to investigate. Hammer returned to announce
triumphantly that there was no truth to the rumor about slave labor. With great
fanfare the U.S. government lifted the ban on Soviet crabmeat.

Using the money pouring in from Libya Hammer bought the Island Creek Coal Co.,
the nation’s third largest coal producer. Following Gore’s 1970 electoral
defeat, Hammer appointed him chairman of Island Creek as well as executive VP
of Occidental. Gore’s took home a handsome $500,000 annually. By 1992 Gore
owned Occidental stock worth $680,000. By now Hammer was, not surprisingly,
cultivating the ambitious young Gore. In the 1960s, Gore Sr. informed Hammer
that zinc ore had been discovered near his farm in Tennessee. Hammer bought the
land for $160,000. He then promptly sold it back to him. Occidental then began
payments of $20,000 a year for the right to mine it. Gore Sr. then sold the
land to Gore Jr. for $140,000. According to the Center for Public Integrity,
Gore Jr. has been receiving $20,000 a year from Occidental ever since.
Interestingly, Occidental never did mine the land. In 1985, Gore leased the
land to Occidental-competitor Union Zinc–clearly a sweetheart deal between
Hammer and the Gore family.

Today, Gore Jr. is executor of his father’s estate, which holds $500,000 worth
of Occidental stock. In other words, the Vice President himself controls
$500,000 worth of Occidental stock. Not surprisingly, Occidental has been
extremely helpful to Clinton and Gore. Occidental gave $50,000 to the Clinton’s
1996 reelection campaign. Since 1992 Occidental has given more than $470,000 in
soft money to the Democratic Party. According to the Center for Public
Integrity, two days after Ray Irani, Arm

This is the same technique used to trace the Kohan
genes from European Jews to the descendants of Aaron
back past the Roman expulsions in 1st century Judea.

This method is a valuable tool now being applied in
many ways including the one below.

This puts to end the idiotic and pathetic theories of
those who would make Jews not Jews but Khazars who
have no claim on the Bible or the " People of the Book."

This method can also be used to debunk the MANY theories
which exist as to who are the modern descendants of the
" Lost Tribes." If there are no genetic markers showing
Kohan genes in the populations making the claim, then
they just aint got the right stuff. Wishful thinking
does not an " Israelite " make.

What are you going to do with this one Poley? How will
you EVER double-talk your way out of this? You don't have
the balls to admit you are a wrongheaded bigot, even in the
face of genetic evidence.

Geneticists find Irish are a race apart

Emerald Isle westerners share unique Y chromosome type

March 22 — Irish geneticists have used surnames
and the male Y chromosome to reconstruct a
1,000-year-old genetic map of Ireland that shows
the Irish really are a race apart.

“WHEN YOU look at this old genetic geography of
Ireland what you find is that in the West (of the country) we
are almost exclusively of one type of Y chromosome,” Daniel
Bradley said Wednesday.

The Y chromosome is passed down exclusively from
father to son. It is a favorite of geneticists because it
accentuates differences between populations.

“It is inherited as a unit so the information you get from
it is of a special type,” Bradley said.
Bradley and his colleagues at Trinity College in Dublin
examined the Y chromosomes of men with Gaelic surnames
in the western-most province of Connaught, and found that
98.3 percent had a group of genes on the Y chromosome
known as haplogroup 1.

“When you look at Gaelic surnames they are different in
frequency of Y chromosome types from non-Gaelic
surnames,” Bradley said.

In a report in the science journal Nature, he and his
colleagues said that even within Ireland they found
differences.

 Exploring our roots

More than 98 percent of men with Gaelic names in
western Ireland had haplogroup 1 but numbers dropped
drastically on the east of the Emerald Isle.
Much further east in Turkey only 1.8 percent of men
carry haplogroup 1.

“Ireland may tell us something about European diversity
because it is on the edge of Europe. Genetic diversity follows
geography to some extent,” Bradley said.

The researchers said there is a gradient of haplogroup 1
across Europe starting at almost zero in
the Far East to almost 100 percent in the west of Ireland.

One of the most likely explanations for this is that farming,
which was invented about 10,000 years ago in the near East and
caused a fundamental revolution in the way humans
lived, spread over across Europe with time but only arrived in
western Ireland about 6,000 years ago.

“Ireland has been relatively untouched by this and the
other great demographic movements because of its
location
That gives us the ability to look at the west and surnames and to
get a snapshot of what early European genetics may have been like,”
Bradley said.

[CTRL] Mental Illness & the American Dream

WSWS : News & Analysis : North America
Mental illness and the American dream: Part 1
A comment by Frank Brenner
24 March 2000
Back to screen version

This is the first of a two-part series. The concluding part will appear
tomorrow.

The Surgeon-General's report

The numbers tell a nightmare. According to a major report on mental health
recently issued by Surgeon-General David Satcher, the top public health
official in the US, one in five Americans suffers from a diagnosable mental
disorder each year and half the entire population have such disorders at some
time in their lives.[1] Half the population! A staggering figure, hard to get
one's head around: is a term like epidemic even adequate to characterize a
situation of this magnitude? And yet, horrifying as these numbers are, they
aren't that surprising, certainly not to anyone professionally involved in the
field nor, I suspect, to a large section of the general public. If the
discussions I've had or heard on this issue are anything to go by, a not
uncommon reaction to this information is: "Only half?" It isn't just that
everyone seems to know someone who's had "mental problems" or that, with the
wholesale shutdown of mental hospitals, the mentally ill (and the wretchedness
of their lives) have become a much more visible presence on city streets; it is
also the widespread feeling these days that people no longer have much (or any)
control over their lives and hence that there is something "crazy" about what
is happening to them.

There are a lot more numbers in the report, most of them tokens of suffering:

* mental illness, including suicide, is the Number 2 cause of disability
(defined as “years of life lost to premature death and years lived with a
disability of specified severity and duration”), less than heart disease but
worse than cancer and AIDS combined;

* a fifth of all children show signs and symptoms of a diagnosable mental
disorder in any given year, though only 5 percent suffer “extreme functional
impairment”;

* among adults, ages 18 to 54, 15 percent suffer anxiety disorders, 7 percent
have mood disorders and a little over 1 percent have schizophrenia;

* depression is common among people 65 and older—this is the age group with the
highest suicide rates, though the report offers the dubious consolation that
“suicidal thoughts are sometimes considered a normal facet of old age.”

Five hundred pages long, the report ( Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon
General) brings together a huge amount of data from the findings of hundreds of
recent studies. It would be hard to imagine a more comprehensive document: this
is the state of the art, as far as mental health is concerned, at the end of
the twentieth century. And, as The New York Times points out, it carries added
significance because it “puts the imprimatur of the government on the
findings”; the hope of those involved is that, like the 1964 Surgeon-General's
report on smoking, this new report will become a catalyst for a major shift in
public attitudes to mental illness.[2]

Accordingly, the basic tone of the report (to use current bureaucratic jargon)
is "pro-active": though the suffering due to mental illness is widespread, the
expert opinion of the report is that most of that suffering is avoidable. One
of the document's key findings is that nearly two-thirds of people who have
mental disorders don't seek treatment, even though effective treatments already
exist. The report highlights a number of reasons for this: simple ignorance
that one has a disorder or that it can be treated; a fear of being stigmatized
as mentally ill by family and friends; and—what is no doubt the decisive factor
for a great many people—the fact that they can't afford treatment since they
have no medical insurance or else the insurance they do have doesn't cover
mental illness.

Changing attitudes to mental illness and improving access to treatment are, of
course, laudable aims. Not so laudable is what the report says (or doesn't say)
about how to achieve them. It insists that its proposals won't cost a lot of
money; similarly, it assures HMOs and medical insurers that cost increases from
covering mental illness would be minimal. This is nonsense: if the great bulk
of people who need help and aren't now getting it start showing up for
treatment, it's obvious that they could only be accommodated by a major
expansion of mental health services, and that means a major increase in
funding. Why this denying of the obvious? Because to admit it would clash
directly with the economic agenda of the Clinton administration (which, in case
anyone missed the point, let it be known when the report came out that it “was
not seeking a big budget increase” to fund any new initiative on mental
health). And, as to the insurance industry, the Surgeon-General has no power to
compel it to change its coverage while Congress, which does have the power, is

A religion may be internally consistent, but its logic fails when heard by
non-believers. Using quotes from a religion's sacred book to prove the argument
of said religion's verity is circular, thus ineffective. Reason and logic are
anathema to religious faith.

Can believers witness without trying to convince or is that part of the package?
;) All I've figured is people have to be moved from within by the Spirit.

[CTRL] APPEAL TO THE CONSCIENCE OF THE WORLDREGARDING THE USE OF DEPLETED URANIUM WEAPONS BY NATO FORCES ON THETERRITORY OF FR OF YUGOSLAVIA

The Committee for National Solidarity
Tolstojeva 34, 11000 Belgrade, YU

APPEAL TO THE CONSCIENCE OF THE WORLD
REGARDING THE USE OF DEPLETED URANIUM WEAPONS BY NATO FORCES ON THE
TERRITORY OF FR OF YUGOSLAVIA

Although anti-armour weapons containing depleted uranium undoubtedly produce
severe consequences to human health and environment, they were used in the
course of NATO military operations against FR of Yugoslavia. Additionaly, a
recent documents and articles have revealed reasons to believe that depleted
uranium might not have only been used in anti-armour shells, but also in
larger projectiles.

I - Established facts about the use of depleted uranium

Since the beginning of hostilities, on March 24, 1999, officials of the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have, on many occasions, admitted
that certain types of aircraft involved in the operation were using bullets
made of depleted uranium (DU) against armoured units of the Yugoslav
Army.[1]

Depleted uranium is a by-product from the production of enriched fuel for
nuclear reactors and weapons, and represents one of the largest categories
of radioactive waste.[2] DU is highly toxic to humans both chemically as a
heavy metal and radiologically as an alpha-particle emitter. That is why
weapons made of this material are inhumane and have an indiscriminate
effect.[3] The use of such weapons is contrary to international law
regarding the rules and customs of war, the protection of civilian persons
in time of war and the protection of environment.[4] United Nations
Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (the former
Sub-Commisssion on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of
Minorities), the main subsidiary body of the United Nations Commission on
Human Rights, had condemned the use of weaponry containing DU together with
the use of other weapons of mass destruction and with indiscriminate
effect.[5]

By firing DU bullets during the most recent bombardments, NATO also
disregarded the results of numerous expert analyses indicating that the use
of DU shells during operation the Desert Storm in Kuwait and Southern Iraq
was related to a specific illness, the so-called Gulf War Syndrome,
afflicting probably more than 90.000 allied soldiers, as well as inflicting
serious long-lasting damage to the health of the local population.[6] The
most severe reported consequences to the health of contaminated persons were
the initiation of new or promotion of existing cancers, as well as changes
in the genetic material, the latter ones influencing the offspring.[7] It
appears that official institutions of the United States of America have not
seriously denied such reports.[8] Today, similar effects can be observed in
Republic of Srpska, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where DU weapons had been
used by NATO during 1995. [9]

The danger of the use of DU to human health and to the environment lies in
the fact that DU burns when piercing the target, [10] releasing
uranium-oxide, a radioactive aerosol, which contains alpha-particles. This
aerosol is light, thus able to travel by air and be carried by wind over
long distances, contaminating the air, water, agricultural areas, and,
consequently, the food-chain. A particularly dangerous threat to health lies
in the possibility that such particles are inhaled or ingested, in which
case they could even penetrate tissues and enter the bloodstream, directly
irradiating organs and blood. [11]

II - The possibility that a new kind of DU weapons was used in FRY

A number of recent documents and articles revealed reasons to believe that
depleted uranium might not have only been used in anti-armour shells, but
also in larger projectiles (e.g. cruise missiles or bombs).

In that case, the use of weapons containing DU, although forbidden even
against military targets, would not have been limited to Kosovo and Metohija
only, the region which was the only battlefield where NATO was trying to
neutralize Yugoslav armoured units. NATO airplanes bombed various structures
throughout FRY. For example, continous attacks on industrial plants,
buildings, bunkers and airports had been taking place in Belgrade.

If the weapons used to destroy buildings, industrial plants, bridges, roads,
bunkers, airports and other structures in FRY did contain DU, then much
larger quantities of this material could have contaminated highly populated
areas and thus ???pardized the health of numerous Yugoslav citizens.

III Grounds

The above stated possibility is based on the following documents and
reports:

1. The article NATO using depleted uranium weapons, by Felicity Arbuthnot
and Darran Gardner, published on April 4, 1999, in Sunday Herald Glasgow,
Scotland: ...Both Tomahawk cruise missiles and munitions rounds used by
American Warthog bombers (A-10) contain the radioactive waste material...

2. The statement of the Russian foreign minister, Mr. Igor Iva

The Military & CNN
by Alexander Cockburn

A handful of military personnel from the 4th Psychological Operations Group
(i.e. PSYOPs) based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina have until recently been
working in CNN's headquarters in Atlanta. An enterprising Dutch journalist
named Abe De Vries came up with this important story in mid-February, and he
remains properly astounded that no mainstream news medium in the United States
has evinced any interest in the story.

I came across translations of De Vries' stories on the matter, after they had
appeared in late February in Trouw, the foremost quality newspaper in Holland.
De Vries later told me he'd originally come upon the story via an article in
the French Intelligence newsletter (available on a pay-per-story basis on the
Internet) Feb. 17, which described a military symposium in Arlington, Va., held
at the beginning of that same month, discussing use of the press in military
operations.

Col. Christopher St. John, commander of the U.S. Army's 4th PSYOPs Group, was
quoted by a French Intelligence correspondent, present at the symposium, as (in
the correspondent's words) having ``called for greater cooperation between the
armed forces and media giants. He (St. John) pointed out that some Army PSYOPs
personnel had worked for CNN for several weeks, and helped in the production of
some news stories for the network.''
Reading this in Belgrade, where he's Trouw's correspondent, De Vries saw a good
story, picked up the phone, and finally reached Maj. Thomas Collins of the U.S.
Army Information Service, who duly confirmed the presence of these Army PSYOPs
experts at CNN. ``PSYOPs personnel, soldiers and officers,'' De Vries quoted
Collins as telling him, ``have been working in CNN's headquarters in Atlanta
through our program `Training with Industry.' They worked as regular employees
of CNN. Conceivably, they would have worked on stories during the Kosovo war.
They helped in the production of news.''

I reported this interesting disclosure in my newsletter, CounterPunch, and made
it the topic of my regular weekly broadcast to ``AM Live,'' a program of the
South Africa Broadcasting Company in Johannesburg. Among the audience of this
broadcast was CNN's bureau in South Africa, which lost no time in relaying news
of it to CNN headquarters in Atlanta, and I duly received an angry phone call
from Eason Jordan, who identified himself as CNN's president of news gathering
and international networks.

Jordan was full of indignation that I had somehow compromised the reputation of
CNN. But in the course of our conversation, it turned out that, yes, CNN had
hosted a total of five interns from U.S. Army PSYOPs, two in television, two in
radio, and one in satellite operations. Jordan said the program had begun on
June 7 (just before the end of the war against Serbia), and only recently
terminated, I would guess at about the time CNN's higher management read Abe De
Vries' stories.

Naturally enough, Eason Jordan and other executives at CNN now describe the
Army PSYOPs intern tours at CNN as having been insignificant. Maybe so. Col.
St. John, the commanding officer of the PSYOPs group, certainly thought them of
sufficient significance to mention at that high-level Pentagon pow-wow in
Arlington about propaganda and psychological warfare. Maybe CNN was the target
of a PSYOPs penetration and is still too naive to figure out what was going on.
It's hard not to laugh when CNN execs like Eason Jordan start spouting, as he
did to me, high-toned stuff about CNN's principles of objectivity and refusal
to relay government propaganda.

During the war on Serbia, as with other recent conflicts involving the United
States, CNN's screen was filled with an interminable procession of U.S.
officers. On April 27 of last year, Amy Goodman of the Pacifica Radio network
put the following question to Frank Sesno, who is CNN's senior vice president
for political coverage.
GOODMAN: ``If you support the practice of putting ex-military men -- generals --
on the payroll to share their opinion during a time of war, would you also
support putting peace activists on the payroll to give a different opinion
during a time of war?
SESNO: ``We bring the generals in because of their expertise in a particular
area. We call them analysts. We don't bring them in as advocates. In fact, we
actually talk to them about that -- they're not there as advocates.''

Exactly a week before Sesno said this, CNN had featured as one of its military
analysts, Lt. Gen. Dan Benton, U.S. Army Retired.

BENTON: ``I don't know what our countrymen that are questioning why we're
involved in this conflict are thinking about. As I listened to this press
conference this morning, with reports of rapes, villages being

February 27, 1994 Volume 145, No. 9

Who would expect to find diamonds on the souls of evangelical American
missionaries in Zaire? Situated in the bull's-eye of Africa, Zaire has 43
million citizens scratching out a living on roughly $500 a year apiece.
Zaire's cruel, old-style dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko, however, does not
subsist on $500 a year - he has many millions stashed away, and right now he
makes a decent income off his country's roughly $300 million-a-year diamond
trade. Now, with Mobutu's permission, Zaire's diamond business has a new
entrant - Pat Robertson, the American televangelist and ex-presidential
candidate.

Backed by the CIA, army general Joseph-Desire Mobutu took over the Republic
of the Congo in 1965 and later called himself Mobutu Sese Seko. In 1971 he
renamed the country Zaire. Throughout his rule, Mobutu has dealt brutally
with opponents, civilian and military. His country's mineral wealth and
location kept Mobutu valuable to Western interests for years, but when the
threat of communist expansion disappeared, his worth diminished. By 1993 his
horrific human-rights record and his refusal to yield the throne had led to
an economic squeeze of Zaire by three major trading partners - the U.S.,
France and Belgium. Largesse from lenient banks dried up. Desperately casting
a net for new friends, Mobutu found Robertson. Makau Mutua, projects director
of the Human Rights Program at the Harvard Law School, says that currently
"Robertson is Mobutu's biggest American catch."

The association of dictator and preacher began with a Robertson relief group,
Operation Blessing, a branch of which has botched a corn-cultivation project
on a 50,000-acre farm outside the capital, Kinshasa. Last year during the
Rwandan refugee crisis, Operation Blessing expanded its humanitarian efforts
to Goma but was criticized for spending too much money on transportation,
pulling its workers out too soon and proselytizing. "They were laying on
hands," an American aid worker recalls, "speaking in tongues and holding
services while people were dying all around." Many relief agencies are
notorious for mismanagement and backbiting, but even considering that,
Operation Blessing drew a considerable volume of negative reviews from fellow
Samaritans.

Another Robertson organization working in Zaire is the African Development
Co. Around the world, Robertson has substantial business interests (in the
U.S. he controls TV's Family Channel, the Ice Capades and KaloVita, a venture
selling vitamins and skin creams from the Holy Land), and ADC is a private
enterprise formed to look into investments in mining, lumber, agriculture,
transportation and power generation, with an eye to plowing the profits back
into humanitarian efforts. A nascent diamond-mining operation in Zaire is a
project of the ADC. Located on a river southeast of the boomtown of Tshikapa
in the heart of Zaire's diamond country, the project uses state-of-the-art
dredges and diving equipment. Robertson is also exploring gold interests on
the upper Zaire, or Congo, River, and assessing the hardwood logging
potential of four great swaths of rain forest.

Robertson could hardly engage in these activities without Mobutu's help.
"Diamonds are Mobutu's principal source of revenue," says William Harrop, who
served as U.S. ambassador to Zaire from 1987 to 1991. "It is virtually
impossible to operate in that field without his permission." One man who
helps run ADC in Zaire is Bill Lovick, a former Assemblies of God minister
who was dismissed from the church in 1985 for "a lack of ethics in raising
Assemblies of God monies," according to a letter dispatched to him on Nov.
22, 1985, from the church's district secretary-treasurer. Lovick told TIME
that the government granted Robertson the forest concessions and had been
generally helpful. "It's been a very good thing for the President," Lovick
says, "and a very good thing for Dr. Robertson." It has not been a good thing
for other missionaries, who fear that the people will believe they too are in
league with Mobutu.

An American executive recounts a trip to Zaire with Robertson some years ago
that began in Paris, where the minister, his wife Adelia and an entourage of
15 boarded one of Mobutu's personal planes, a Boeing 707. On the visitors'
arrival, Mobutu received them on the presidential yacht. There was a ride up
the Congo to visit a presidential estate and, in an unusual gesture of
official hospitality, Mrs. Mobutu actually prepared several of the dishes
served to the guests. "The atmosphere was very congenial," says the
executive, long a supporter of Robertson's. "Pat Robertson and Mobutu get
along extremely well. Mobutu was interested in bringing in people to get the
mining and ag

ROBERTSON, THE MAN OF CHRISTIAN 'COMPASSION' WHO CONS HIS VIEWERS INTO
SUPPORTING HIS BUSINESS EMPIRE.
NO, SORRY, ASKS THEM TO CONTRIBUTE TO "HELP THE POOR AND NEEDY".
Pat Robertson operates a massive media and business empire and it mixes very
nicely thank-you with his Christian "Ministry".

One of his notorious business arrangements was in the Congo, formerly Zaire,
which is now being ravaged yet again by war (see related article).
Robertson's business there involved his friend, the vicious and criminal
dictator, the late Mobuto Sese Seko.

Mobuto raped his country's finances and placed billions of dollars in
sequestered accounts in Switzerland and elsewhere. It was said that Mobuto
could have solved Zaire's financial nightmare by just writing a personal
check. Robertson tried to sell Mobuto as a bastion of Christian
anti-communism who was maintaining the line against Marxist guerillas in
Africa in support of U.S. interests.

The two were close friends, and on one occasion Mobuto wined-and-dined
Robertson on his personal yacht during a business trip. Robertson set up the
African Development Company to mine diamonds and this was also given lumber
concessions by the Zaire government. Mobutu in other words.

This is where Robertson's 700 club, operated by his Christian Broadcasting
Network, came in so handy. The members and other viewers were told that they
were contributing money to "Operation Blessing" to help the needy in Africa.
The needy, it seems, being called Pat Robertson if what employees of this
operation say is correct.

Pilots for Operation Blessing told reporters that apart from a limited number
of flights to transport medical supplies, most of their time in the air was
spent ferrying mining equipment and other materials required for Robertson's
African Development Company. One airman, Robert Hinkle, told the
Virginia-Pilot newspaper:

"We got over there and we had 'Operation Blessing' painted on the tails of
the airplanes but we were doing no humanitarian relief at all. We were just
supplying the miners and flying the dredges from Kinshasa out to Tshikapa"
(the operations base for the African Development Company).

"We hauled medical supplies one time," added Hinkle. "It might have been 500
pounds at the most..."

State officials in Virginia have refused to comment on the findings of an
investigation into Robertson's charity and his diamond mine venture. The
Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs has been "investigating" allegations of
impropriety since June, 1997 when a state senator first raised the issue of
tax exemptions for Robertson, and possible consumer fraud.

According to the Virginia-Pilot newspaper edition of October 1, 1998, State
Attorney General Mark Earley refused to disclose any information or findings.
Robertson contributed $35,000 to Earley's campaign -- the largest donation
from a single individual.

Would you take moral lectures from Pat Robertson? Would you even buy a Bible
from him? No. But millions do.

An Introduction to the "Little Sister" of The Royal Institute of
International Affairs: The U.S. Council on Foreign Relations

By Eric Samuelson, J.D.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

"Since its founding... the CFR has been the preeminent intermediary between
the world of high finance, big oil, corporate elitism, and the U.S.
government. Its members slide smoothly into cabinet-level jobs in Republican
and Democratic administrations. The policies promulgated in its quarterly
journal, Foreign Affairs, become U.S. government policy." -- Jonathan Vankin
(1)

"As a teenager, I heard John Kennedy's summons to citizenship. And then, as a
student, I heard that call clarified by a professor I had named Carroll
Quigley." -- Democratic Presidential Nominee Bill Clinton

When Bill Clinton delivered his acceptance speech at the Democratic
convention, on July 16, 1992, Carroll Quigley's name was not exactly a
household word.(2) Quigley, Dean of The School of Foreign Service at
Georgetown University, had graduated magna cum from Harvard. He made Ripley's
"Believe It or Not" for being Harvard's youngest person to receive a Ph.D.
After teaching at Harvard and Princeton, he went to Georgetown where for 28
consecutive years alumni selected him as their most influential professor.
Clinton, Quigley's student, went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, a CFR member,
a Trilateral Commission member and a Bilderberger participant. He joined the
Council on Foreign Relations in 1989, attended a Bilderberg meeting in 1991
and was a current member of the Trilateral Commission at the time of his
nomination.(3) Clinton, before the American public, openly acknowledged his
Georgetown mentor and clued his followers from the convention podium. He then
went on in November to defeat former CFR/Trilateralist/Skull and Bones member
President George H.W. Bush.

The shadowy political and even "foreign" beginnings of the Council on Foreign
Relations have long been intentionally obscured. For more than three decades
the CFR received no notice by authors, the general public or serious
researchers. When mentioned, it is almost always in articles detailing how
many of the appointees of a given administration, as usual, have a "CFR
connection". (4)

Santa Barbara sociologist G. William Domhoff wrote in 1978 that the CFR had
been the subject of only two "academic studies." This, he said, provided "an
impressive commentary in itself on how little social scientists know about
policy-making in the United States."(5) A lack of academic commentary has
also been paralleled by little coverage in the media or press. It was not
until some 37 years after the creation of the CFR that a mainstream magazine
article was published in Harper's by Joseph Kraft in July 1958 entitled:
"School for Statesmen."(6)

A major clue was given by Georgetown University Professor Carroll Quigley in
an interview. Quigley, in his best Boston accent, dismissed the Radical-Right
interpretation as 'garbage'. But he then added: 'To be perfectly blunt, you
could find yourself in trouble dealing with this subject." He explained that
his career as a lecturer in the government institution circuit was all but
ruined because of the twenty or so pages he had written about the existence
of Round Table Groups. As we will see, the CFR was, indeed, a British Round
Table creation. This is one of the most important hidden secrets of the
NYC-based CFR.

The story of the British connection to the Council on Foreign Relations may
be traced back to George Peabody, J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Nicholas M.
Butler and Col. Edward House -- all who may be described a British loyalists.
A Secret Society was established by Cecil Rhodes in connection with
Rothschild, Morgan, Carnegie, and Rockefeller. A small highly secret group
called the Round Table directed operations.(7)

The story begins at least when George Peabody moved to London and took up
English residence in 1837 -- the same year Queen Victoria ascended the
throne. He joined with other merchant bankers who traded in dry goods in
"high finance." This consisted of exclusive service to "governments, large
companies and rich individuals." (8) Soon after his arrival in London,
Peabody was summoned by Baron Nathan Mayer Rothschild. Rothschild offered to
pay all his entertainment bills. Hence, the famous Peabody July 4th dinners
were bought and paid for by funds from the Rothschilds.(9) In 1837, Peabody
was warned, in advance, by his British friends of their decision "to withdraw
credits from the worldwide markets and thereby depress commercial values; so
he was fully liquid and ready to pounce on the American properties rendered
bargains by the British move."(10) In the crash of 1837 Peabody made a
fortune purchasing depressed property in America.(11) In 1854 the American
Ambassador to London, James Buchanan, stormed out of the room when George
Peabody toasted Queen Victoria before President Pierce.(12) Peabody "was the

I could give you scripture to back up the fact that Christ was the only
begotten Son of God, but if you read the end of each post you will see that
proselytizing, is not allowed and unlike some, I try to follow that rule on
lists that are not specifically about religion. Read your Bible, if you have

DEFRAUDING AMERICA

by Rodney Stich

(Chapter 28, Page 507)

ISRAEL, THE MOSSAD AND AMERICA

Israeli officials and agencies, and particularly its intelligence agency,
the Mossad, aided and abetted many of the criminal activities described
within these pages, inflicting great harm upon the American people. Without
the assistance of the Israelis, some of the treasonous and subversive acts
against the United States would not have been possible, especially the
October Surprise operation. Israel was needed to transship the arms to Iran
and to act as end-users on the bill-of-lading.

KILLING PEOPLE WHO

DISAGREE WITH

ISRAELI POLICIES

Similar to CIA activities, and possibly worse in some respects, the Mossad
doesn't hesitate to assassinate people whose lawful conduct irritates the
Israelis. Gerald Bull, a Canadian scientist who developed the Super Gun used
by Iraq, was killed by the Mossad at his Brussels apartment in March 1990.
Israeli assassination squads killed Bull to halt his development of the
Supergun project for the Iraqis.

During that same time frame, Israeli agents were assassinating others, as
reported by former Mossad officers Ari Ben-Menashe and Victor Ostrovsky in
their books (Profits of War, by Ari Ben-Menashe; By Way of Deception, by
Victor Ostrovsky and Claire Hoy). Nineteen people were killed by Israeli
agents within several weeks in 1990, including eight German scientists hired
by a company in Miami and who were traveling back and forth to Iraq; a
German scientist, Hans Mayers, in a car "accident" in Munich; four Iraqi
businessmen, and two Pakistani scientists in Britain. A television
production aired on June 17, 1993, focused on the many killings by the
Mossad, including the botched killing in Sweden of the wrong person by
Mossad operative Michael (Freddy) Harari. One of the favorite stunts was to
put a pressure sensitive plastic-explosive bomb in the victim's bed. When
the intended victim lay on the bed the bomb went off. Another tactic was to
place plastic explosives in a telephone handset, and when the person
answered, and the caller identified him as the intended victim, the bomb
would be set off by a signal carried over the telephone wire. Although the
plastic explosive was small in size, it usually caused fatal injuries. [The
New York Trade Center was bombed with use of what is called "AN ISRAELI
BRIEFCASE BOMB".]

Victor Ostrovsky detailed the specifics of several of the killings by
Israeli agents, describing the composition of the Israeli assassination
department inside the Mossad as a small internal unit called kidon, divided
into three teams consisting of approximately twelve men each.

Ostrovsky described the shooting down of a Boeing 727 operated by Libyan
Arab Airlines by two Israeli jets, killing over a hundred people. He told
how two Israeli agents killed Arab scientist Yahia El Meshad, by slipping
into his apartment with a passkey and then cutting his throat while he
slept. He also told how the Mossad killed a PLO official in Paris who was
preparing to meet with the French Secret Service.

A December 14, 1992, issue of SPOTLIGHT carried a story about Israeli
assassination squads operating in foreign countries under the title,
"Foreign Killers Run Loose in U.S." The article related how Israeli-trained
assassins, funded by U.S. taxpayers, are entering the United States, often
with the help of the CIA, leaving a trail of unsolved and unreported
killings. The report explained how the United States is funding the Mossad's
criminal operations in Third World countries.

Ben-Menashe's book portrays the Mossad's hiring of Arabs who unknowingly
carried out terrorist attacks against Americans, inflaming the American
public against the Arabs, who didn't know the attacks were planned and
directed by the Mossad. He also tells how Mossad agents paid Palestinians to
seize the Mediterranean cruise ship, Achille Lauro in 1985, which ended in
the killing of one of the passengers. Ironically, the passenger was Jewish.
Ari Ben-Menashe wrote in his book, Profits of War, that the attack upon the
cruise ship was financed by Israel and its intent was "to show what a
deadly, cutthroat bunch the Palestinians were." The American public was told
that the attack upon the Achille Lauro was a Palestinian operation when, in
fact, it was engineered and financed by Israel.

ISRAEL'S ADMISSION OF

WORLDWIDE ASSASSINATIONS

A London Observer article carried in the San Francisco Examiner on November
24, 1993 was headlined, "Israeli official admits unleashing assassins." The
article described the practice of Israel's military-security establishments
carrying out assassinations on a global basis, many of them specifically
authorized by Israel's prime ministers, including Golda Meir. The article
admitted the mistaken assassination of a waiter in the Norwegian town of
Lillehammer, thinking the victim was a PLO ter

[SO] UFO Disclosure
>From James Gilliland

The speakers at the International UFO Congress established the fact with
overwhelming proof that we have had contact in the past with off world
visitors AND we have back engineered our own craft and are continuing in a
massive cover-up that involves every aspect of our press. After watching
hours of smuggled out NASA encounters caught on film and hearing top
officials speak about off world craft monitoring every one of our space
missions, one has to wonder why? Why is NASA, SETI and the Department of
Defense involved in covering up what now is the obvious? It is like hiding
an elephant with a hanky.

A recent Times/CNN pole showed over 80% of the people believe there are UFOs
and our government is covering it up. Now reason this. If we live in a
democracy and 80% of the people believe UFOs exist and desire the
government to come clean, who does the government serve?

The answer is the government serves the elite and the elite have decided you
are not worthy of the truth.

They have also decided you are not worthy of free energy, the end of
disease, an abundant life with a clean environment. There is a unit the size
of a bread box that produces more power than Hover Dam which was recovered
and duplicated from a UFO crash site. Now what would happen if you had one
of those in your car, your house, etc. Hey why not add in a little
antigravity and do away with the tires and roads. What would happen if there
was a device that would destroy any virus or bacteria without harming the
human cell which is ten times more resilient? What if the elite had a device
that could regenerate tissue, cure cancer, end the pain and suffering as
well as expensive operations, radiation treatments which destroy the immune
system and then replacing it with expensive drugs creating a dependency?
Would they share any of these devices with the masses?

The power of the elite is based on your dependencies and they are heavily
invested in maintaining that dependency. You are dependent upon them for
your food, energy and transportation needs, heat, water, etc. Even the news
concerning the condition of your society and environment.

What if they were destroying the environment, there were 50 dead zones in
your oceans, the forests have been reduced rapidly, thousands of species
have disappeared and your air, water and land are being poisoned beyond the
ability to sustain life?

What if your civilization was not sustainable, was on a rapid downward
spiral? Would they tell you or try to maintain the status quo keeping their
positions of power and wealth holding you in dependency?

Think about this when you listen to the evening news. When you pay $2.00 a
gallon for gas. When you pay that electric and heating bill. When you walk
through a children's cancer ward and look at them as they suffer withering
away into nothing.

Then ask yourself if you in some way are a willing participant. Now you know
why there is a UFO cover-up. You also know why free energy is not available
and why energetic devices that have been proven to work better than
expensive drugs, devices that heal rather than create a dependency are not
available to the masses.

I do not think God's plan was for man/woman to become sheep governed by
fear, corralled by dependency and led in the downward spiral into social
economic and environmental collapse.

Do not expect your leaders to stand up for you. It is like complaining to
the wolf to get the other wolves to stop
eating the sheep. If change is going to come it must be a leaderless
revolution from within the individual and each individual must do their
part. If you want Universal Peace, Brother/Sisterly Love, Equality,
Individual Freedom and Prosperity for All and a Wholesome Clean Environment
it will have to come through the individual. "Universal peace will not come
through governments and religions but through the hearts and minds of the
people." Mother Mary.

[CTRL] Russia's (Ras)Putin: Crypto-Stalinist?

2000-03-24 Thread DIG alfred webre

-Caveat Lector- http://www.ctrl.org/">
 -Cui Bono?-

Spies fall out as KGB colleague
  dishes up dirt

Moscow: A former KGB veteran who spent decades
spying on the West has launched a blistering attack on
  Vladimir Putin, his former colleague.

He described the man who expects to become
Russia's president tomorrow as prone to riding
roughshod over the law and accused him of running a
  "corrupt and criminalised" Russia.

As a prominent liberal commentator, Alexander Minkin,
warned that the KGB was returning to rule Russia under
a Putin presidency, Oleg Kalugin, a retired KGB
major-general who was once the chief of Soviet
espionage in the United States, rounded on Mr Putin,
saying he displayed a "purely Soviet approach" to
questions of justice and the law.

"I don't believe in the Russia of Putin, criminalised and
corrupt, with its lame justice and due process," Mr
Kalugin said in an open letter to the Acting President.
"In this situation, I'll be bound to seek political asylum
in
  the free world."

In a recent interview, Mr Putin called Mr Kalugin a traitor
because a decade ago he broke with the world of KGB
secrecy and, during the perestroika years under Mr
  Mikhail Gorbachev, campaigned for public
  accountability in the security services.

Mr Kalugin served the KGB for 30 years and was highly
decorated for his service. But he was stripped of his
awards by KGB hardliners in 1990, before having them
restored the following year. He now works in the United
  States.

As well as spending years as a spy in Washington
before becoming the head of Soviet foreign
counter-intelligence, Mr Kalugin also spent seven years
as deputy head of the KGB in Leningrad, now St
  Petersburg, Mr Putin's native city.

Mr Putin started his 16-year KGB career there in 1975.
Since Boris Yeltsin's protégé became Acting President
on New Year's Eve, Mr Kalugin has spoken
contemptuously of his KGB career, calling his
contribution to the intelligence service that of a
  mediocrity.

The falling out among spies worsened when Mr Putin
turned aggressively on Mr Kalugin. "Kalugin is a traitor. I
saw Kalugin in my time in Leningrad, where he was
deputy head of the directorate - an absolute idler.

"He doesn't remember anything. He can't remember
me. I had no contacts with him and did not
communicate with him. It is I who remember him,
because he was a big boss and everybody knew him."

The Communist leader, Gennady Zyuganov, who is
expected to be second in tomorrow's election, said the
poll amounted to a contest between "the KGB and the
  Soviet Communist Party".

Mr Kalugin said Mr Putin's recurring use of the term
traitor when describing his foes showed a "dulled
awareness of the law", and a "selective approach to the
presumption of innocence" that recalled the Soviet era.

"The situation in Russia has changed substantially
[since Mr Putin's rise to power]. "The forces of
revanchism are on the offensive. It's become the norm
  to discredit honest people."

He said Mr Putin had raised a toast to Stalin, and had
had a plaque in honour of the late Soviet KGB chief and
Soviet leader Yuri Andropov - "a symbol of communist
despotism" - returned to its place at the security service
headquarters in Moscow. He had also paid a friendly
call on Vladimir Kryuchkov, the "state criminal" who, as
the hardline KGB chief, led the coup attempt against Mr
  Gorbachev in August 1991.

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (March 24, 2000 1:27 p.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - A man shot a woman to death Friday at the
Illinois Department of Transportation office where she worked and then
killed himself. According to authorities she was either his wife or his ex-
wife.

Effingham Police Cpl. Ron Gray said multiple shots were fired from a 9 mm
semi-automatic handgun inside an office on the main floor of the building.
There were no witnesses to the shooting, which happened around 7:15
a.m.

Police said the man and the victim were married at one time, but did not
know if they were divorced or not.

Dick Adorjan, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation,
confirmed that a female employee had been shot and killed. But he
declined to give other details about the shooting or the shooter.

"Obviously, we're very concerned about notifying next of kin," he said.

And I welcome any and all critical feedback which goes into specifics.

For example, what are the cues that

Well, you could have a robotic teacher perform in at least two ways: (1)
In a classroom in which case the performance of Xavier below (under
"Lively") is relevant; (2) Over the internet, in which case I think the
mature student would be so happy to have no cost or low cost education
that he/she would forego the social niceties. Standard online education
does this to a degree. Michael Saylor and John Chambers might want to take
it to the next step...online education taught by robot. See "The
Futurist", March-April/00 for a list of resources on education over the
internet.

> Or, how can we turn an encyclopedia into a more effective pedagogical

That is what courses and their teachers tend to do. We are discussing this
now in considerable detail on the Data Mining List
; .
Give it 50 years and I expect the robots will be able to go through
difficult texts and prepare lectures but for now we humans do the "data
mining/knowledge extraction" for them. (See below under "Lucid").

However, the way you have it currently phrased comes across as
> idealistic (some old farts might say naive)

I can defend any of the points below under Lively, Lucid and Learned but
the criticisms have to be specific. "Bah, hum bug" doesn't qualify.

 and also a little
> antagonistic (you are poking fun at CMU professors). This makes it
> sound more like science fiction than science.

I usually make it clear when I am talking science vs."fiction". So let
me repeat: I am saying XAVIER CAN NOW REPLACE THE PROFS AT
CMU. Now. Using current technology. And I mean profs in general...all over
the world. I have no more ill will toward profs at CMU or anywhere than
Devol and Engelberger had toward factory welders or painters when they
marketed their factory arm in the late 50's and early 60's. I spend a lot
of time on labor/union lists telling the discussants to go with the
BLESSING OF AUTOMATION, not against it.
More directly to the point re your Alife-7 Conference, let me tell you
about my reaction to those ubiquitous tv ads showing robotic factory arms
in use. I never fail to react with a kind of "surprise". I don't know if
it is a conditioned or unconditioned emotional response. But it is
definitely due to the life-like/human-like aspect of their functioning.
Now what do you think will happen when Mr. Engelberger puts his
"HelpMate" humanoid on the mass market as he is now planning? But I
digress...that is more for the story of "Xaviera" which I am hoping the
Humanoids 2000 Conference will accept.

  When you submit it to
> Humanoids 2000 I would take a more tentative (we want to help define the
> important questions and productive approaches to those questions) tone,
> emphasizing the brain storming aspect, and perhaps suggest a few hard
> nosed type research questions.

Definitely. I have at least as many questions as answers. That is why I
wrote in the beginning re my book, "Machine Psychology" (see URL
below) that this is a PUBLIC INQUIRY.

I'd also put it in terms of "how could
> we make learning from Xavier a fulfilling experience that approaches the
> experience of learning from a human teacher." or something like that.

No retraction on that one. Here it is in summary:

LIVELY: If Kurzweil is correct about music synthesizers, Xavier could
introduce "his" classes at CMU with a little saxophone music and it would
be at least as good as Bill Clinton's. For a bit of variety he might want
to do an Okinawa Folk Dance as we are told the Kawato Dynamic Brain
Humanoid can do (see URL below). And there are many other vital signs or
signs of liveliness which Xavier could exhibit but I think I've made my
point. How many CMU profs can do a song

AUDREY'S MISSILES
A weekly newsletter dedicated to the peaceful
reform of the United States government.
.SCANDAL SATURATION

The Los Angeles Times reports that Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev
Yaroslavsky branded the Rampart police scandal an "assault on democracy", as
local officials intensified their calls for an independent investigation into
the Los Angeles Police Department's deepening corruption crisis. The story
of the scandal began to take shape when Rafael Perez was arrested in August
1998 for stealing eight pounds of cocaine from an evidence room. News of it
broke when Perez pleaded guilty to four counts of grand theft of cocaine and
four counts of possession of cocaine for sale, which could mean five years in
prison. Hoping for a lighter sentence, he began telling investigators about
alleged misconduct among fellow officers, saying that they beat, framed,
stole from and shot innocent people in the city' s crime-ridden Rampart area,
near downtown. Recently sentenced under a plea bargain that grants him
immunity for other crimes he has admitted to investigators, Perez was
sentenced to five years and given credit for the time he has already spent in
custody.

As a result of the revelations, Javier Francisco Ovando was released
from a prison where he had been serving a 23-year sentence. Perez now says
he and a former partner handcuffed Ovando in 1996, shot him, planted a gun on
him and then lied about the confrontation in court. Ovando was paralyzed in
the shooting. Nine men whose convictions were overturned have so far been
released from prison. As of late February, 20 officers had been relieved of
duty and 40 tainted convictions have been overturned as the result of the
Perez confessions. At least a hundred more cases are under review. There
are even reports that Police officers at the city's scandal-plagued Rampart
station had the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service deport illegal
Mexican immigrants who said they witnessed police abuse. The FBI and U.S.
attorney's office have recently joined the Los Angeles Police Department in
the investigation.

. The Los Angeles Times says, "Although the city attorney publicly says
that the city's liability in cases arising from the Rampart scandal should be
no more than $125 million in settlement costs, it is far more likely that the
city could face a payoff of well more than $1 billion," a cost which could
well bankrupt the city. The council's Budget and Finance Committee urged
rejection of the mayor's proposal to sell $300 million due the city over 25
years as its share of the national tobacco lawsuit case, for about $100
million now. They want to wait to decide what to do. A number of lawsuits
have already been filed.

Cleaning up the Los Angeles police Department has tried before, and more
than once. There have been Commissions reporting with recommendations for
change, but nothing happens. While the beating of Rodney King sparked riots
in Watts a few years ago, this time no one seems outraged. It is probably
because so many people already know about police corruption in Los Angeles
and police corruption in most of our big cities. There have been so many
scandals in police departments, in the judicial system in general, and most
of all in Washington D.C., the public is no longer surprised or outraged.
We are scandal saturated.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sources close to the Microsoft antitrust case say it looks
like the federal government is backing away from demanding the break up of
the software maker.

The move represents a fundamental shift by the Justice Department, which
largely decided months ago to press for a breakup while anticipating a
strongly favorable ruling from U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson in
the coming weeks.

It also puts Justice's stance at odds with some state attorneys general, who
believe that only the harshest punishment is appropriate.

Microsoft has indicated it will not accept any settlement that divides the
company, and U.S. Assistant Attorney General Joel I. Klein believes such a
punishment may not be necessary to adequately restrain what the trial judge
characterized as Microsoft's monopoly power over the technology industry,
said two people close to the case, speaking on condition of anonymity.

New York's attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, on Thursday praised Klein's
handling of the antitrust trial but acknowledged that past cooperation
between states and Justice ``doesn't mean we're going to agree on every
piece, every remedy.''

Spitzer, who declined to comment on settlement talks, described a ``healthy
dynamic'' among the 19 states and Justice debating punishments.

Shares of Microsoft Corp. surged 8.4 percent on reports a settlement could
be near, moving up $8.62 1/2 to $111.87 1/2 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Antitrust experts offered several explanations why Justice now may be
inclined to accept lesser punishment than a breakup as part of a settlement,
even though the trial judge strongly has hinted he will rule that Microsoft
violated antitrust laws.

The 207-page-ruling declared Microsoft a monopolist company
 Associated Press/ [12K]

Punishment worked out under settlement could apply immediately to Microsoft
— even before the next election — without the uncertainty over the outcome of
lengthy appeals. Government lawyers also could negotiate a punishment broadly
enough they would apply to controversial practices that were not part of the
current trial, such as Microsoft's dominance in Internet ``server'' software
and in the market for word processors and spreadsheets.

``What Justice has to balance is the benefits in the short run of having a
settlement that might apply arguably to some things more long term that
haven't been litigated, against the more certain relief of a structural
divestiture that Microsoft would oppose,'' said Glenn B. Manishin, an
antitrust lawyer who advocates breaking up Microsoft.

The Justice Department also faces an apparent dearth of support among the
public and the technology industry to break up Microsoft, as well as active
debate among some attorneys general on their best course.

Jackson bluntly told government lawyers in November that he would ``not like
to have to deal with divergent points of view'' on proposed punishments.
Ohio's Betty Montgomery, for example, said earlier that lawyers should seek
prohibitions on Microsoft's conduct, not a breakup.

Microsoft has indicated it would never agree to any settlement that included
a breakup; the company's chief executive, Steve Ballmer, called those
proposals ``reckless and irresponsible.''

The first surprise suggestions that a settlement might be possible came
earlier this month after prominent financial analysts met privately with
Microsoft's new financial officer.

Walter Winnitzki of Chase Hambrecht & Quist said afterward that he believed
``there was a near-term opportunity to have this settled, some language being
given that they wouldn't have any change in culture or structure.''

But there also remain signs of continued acrimony. Sounding far from
placated, Klein told a Senate subcommittee this week that any remedy ``ought
to be commensurate'' with Microsoft's aggressive business practices.

Also, Microsoft e-mailed a newsletter to thousands of subscribers Wednesday
harshly critical of the government. It described as ``unseemly at best''
Justice's efforts to persuade industry leaders to support a breakup. It also
derided breakup plans as ``an extreme and reckless resolution to the
government's antitrust suit.''

[CTRL] Fwd: MORE DEVASTATING THAN WAR

21 January 2000
MORE DEVASTATING THAN WAR

BY VIRGINIA VAN DER VLIET
Virginia van der Vliet has written widely on the South African AIDS epidemic
and is the author of The Politics of AIDS (published by Bowerdean in London
in 1996), which examines the global AIDS pandemic. Her expert services are
available to PulseTrack members on a consultancy basis.

At the initiative of the US, which holds the revolving presidency of the
United Nations Security Council for January, this month has been declared
the "month of Africa". The focus will be on Africa's wars, its economy and,
for the first time, a health issue - AIDS.
The unusual (and somewhat controversial), decision to examine AIDS in a
forum usually devoted to the discussion of armed conflicts, and their
political and socioeconomic context, was justified by US vice president Al
Gore, who presided over the first part of the session: "We must understand
that the old conception of global security - with its focus almost solely on
armies, ideologies and geopolitics - has to be enlarged. We need to show
that we not only can contain aggression, prevent war and mediate conflicts,
but that we can work together to anticipate and respond to a new century
with its new global imperatives." Gore also announced that the Clinton
administration was proposing to increase the amount of money allocated to
fight AIDS especially in Africa and India, by $100 million - to a total of
$325 million.
The 15-member Security Council's decision to address the AIDS issue
underlines the growing realization that the epidemic is rapidly becoming
sub-Saharan Africa's number one security issue. In his address, UN
Secretary - General Kofi Annan warned: "By overwhelming the continents
health and social services, by creating millions of orphans, and by
decimating health workers and teachers, AIDS is causing social and economic
crises which in turn threaten political stability. In already unstable
societies, this cocktail of disasters is a sure recipe for more conflict.
And conflict in turn, provides fertile ground for further infections".
The AIDS statistics dwarf the figures of Africans lost in war - 13.7 million
already dead, 23.3 million infected with no hope of treatment or cure in
sight, 9 million AIDS orphans. As UNAIDS executive director, Dr Peter
Piot, noted: "In its demographic, social and economic impact, the epidemic
has become more devastating than war, in a continent where war and conflict
appear to be endemic."
AIDS adds to the fragility and complexity of the continent's geopolitical
systems. Eleven of the world's 27 conflict zones in Africa; 15 sub-Saharan
countries face food emergencies; sharpened now by drought in East Africa;
the orphan generation may become a generation of disaffected youth.
War itself drives the epidemic - rape as a weapon of war is probably as old
as human conflicts, as is the reliance of soldiers on commercial sex. AIDS
has lent this a new dimension. Piot notes that soldiers involved in the
Great Lakes region's conflicts reportedly raped women "of the enemy side",
with the stated intention of infecting them with HIV. In studies of women
in conflict zones, one study showed 17% of raped women, previously negative
became sero-positive; in another refugee women were found to be six times
more likely to become infected in camps than those living outside.
Peacekeeping forces also pose problems. Should UN peacekeepers be tested
for HIV? US ambassador to the UN, Richard Holbrooke, who pushed to have
African issues on the agenda during his month-long Security Council
presidency, comments that for a poor country to enroll its soldiers in such
UN exercise can earn them hard currency. Where the soldiers come from areas
with high HIV rates, Holbrooke fears it might create the greatest irony of
all; in the cause of peace-keeping to spread a disease which is killing ten
times as many people as war". He believes the UN should test for HIV, but
is encountering enormous resistance, especially from Africans, who are
particularly concerned about the issues of privacy and stigmatization which
it raises.
Holbrooke is adamant that testing HIV-positive should not be grounds for
dismissal. On a continent where a job in the military is one of the few
which provide a secure income, and each soldier supports perhaps 15
dependants, discharging a soldier could not only plummet the family into
destitution before they have had time to prepare for the breadwinner's
death, it could also have social repercussions where large numbers of
military are infected.
Another danger is the problem of peacekeepers from elsewhere going into
heavily infected areas and becoming infected, perhaps with new strains of
HIV, which they then bring to their home country. Massive education
campaigns, akin to those used against sexually transmitted diseases during
World War II are necessary.
It was, however, on the consequences of AIDS epidemic on the social and
economic fabri

The following story confirms that CNN had military personnel

implication that PsyOps didn't work at CNN before or after.
So what, these military PsyOps just walked into CNN one day,

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS - Thursday, March 23, 2000

  The Military & CNN

  by Alexander Cockburn

A handful of military personnel from the 4th Psychological
Operations Group (i.e. PSYOPs) based at Fort Bragg in North
Carolina have until recently been working in CNN's
headquarters in Atlanta. An enterprising Dutch journalist
named Abe De Vries came up with this important story in
mid-February, and he remains properly astounded that no
mainstream news medium in the United States has evinced
  any interest in the story.

I came across translations of De Vries' stories on the
matter, after they had appeared in late February in Trouw,
the foremost quality newspaper in Holland.

De Vries later told me he'd originally come upon the story
via an article in the French Intelligence newsletter
(available on a pay-per-story basis on the Internet) Feb.
17, which described a military symposium in Arlington,
Va., held at the beginning of that same month, discussing
use of the press in military operations.

Col. Christopher St. John, commander of the U.S. Army's
4th PSYOPs Group, was quoted by a French Intelligence
correspondent, present at the symposium, as (in the
correspondent's words) having ``called for greater
cooperation between the armed forces and media giants.
He (St. John) pointed out that some Army PSYOPs personnel
had worked for CNN for several weeks, and helped in the
production of some news stories for the network.''

Reading this in Belgrade, where he's Trouw's correspondent,
De Vries saw a good story, picked up the phone, and finally
reached Maj. Thomas Collins of the U.S. Army Information
Service, who duly confirmed the presence of these Army
PSYOPs experts at CNN. ``PSYOPs personnel, soldiers and
officers,'' De Vries quoted Collins as telling him, ``have
been working in CNN's headquarters in Atlanta through our
program `Training with Industry.' They worked as regular
employees of CNN. Conceivably, they would have worked on
stories during the Kosovo war. They helped in the
  production of news.''

I reported this interesting disclosure in my newsletter,
CounterPunch, and made it the topic of my regular weekly
broadcast to ``AM Live,'' a program of the South Africa
Broadcasting Company in Johannesburg. Among the audience
of this broadcast was CNN's bureau in South Africa, which
lost no time in relaying news of it to CNN headquarters in
Atlanta, and I duly received an angry phone call from Eason
Jordan, who identified himself as CNN's president of news
  gathering and international networks.

Jordan was full of indignation that I had somehow compromised
the reputation of CNN. But in the course of our conversation,
it turned out that, yes, CNN had hosted a total of five
interns from U.S. Army PSYOPs, two in television, two in
radio, and one in satellite operations. Jordan said the
program had begun on June 7 (just before the end of the war
against Serbia), and only recently terminated, I would guess
at about the time CNN's higher management read Abe De Vries'
  stories.

Naturally enough, Eason Jordan and other executives at CNN
now describe the Army PSYOPs intern tours at CNN as having
been insignificant. Maybe so. Col. St. John, the commanding
officer of the PSYOPs group, certainly thought them of
sufficient significance to mention at that high-level
Pentagon pow-wow in Arlington about propaganda and
psychological warfare. Maybe CNN was the target of a
PSYOPs penetration and is still too naive to figure out
  what was going on.

It's hard not to laugh when CNN execs like Eason Jordan
start spouting, as he did to me, high-toned stuff about
CNN's principles of objectivity and refusal to relay
  government propaganda.

During the war on Serbia, as with other recent conflicts
involving the United States, CNN's screen was filled with
an interminable procession of U.S. officers. On April 27
of last year, Amy Goodman of the Pacifica Radio network
put the following question to Frank Sesno, who is CNN's
senior vice president for political covera

Hillary Loves to Fly, and She Knows It
UPIMarch 24, 2000

Read The Case Against Hillary Clinton by: Peggy Noonan...purchase your copy at our Online Store
WASHINGTON -- House Republicans on Thursday accused first
lady Hillary Clinton of forcing taxpayers to subsidize her campaign
trips to New York, but Republican estimates of the costs vary widely.
Democrats shot back that the discrepancies in the Republican cost
estimates raise questions about the credibility of all of the Republican
data. Democrats also argue that the congressional investigation is an
improper use of taxpayer money to fund a political effort to discredit a
Democratic candidate.
While the president and other top government officials fly at taxpayer
expense, they are expected to reimburse the government for the portion of
their travel costs that is incurred on campaign or fund-raising trips.
Republicans say Hillary Clinton's official travels as first lady should be
publicly financed, but not her political travel as Senate candidate.
With a formula drawn up during the Reagan years, White House accountants
break down the travel days for top officials, including the first lady,
minute by minute, divide the time spent on official business from time spent
on political business and come up with a cost ratio. For example, if Clinton goes to New York and gives one administration policy speech but
makes two campaign stops, then the White House bills the first lady's Senate
campaign for two-thirds of the trip's total expenses, including flights for
political staffers on administration aircraft.
House Appropriations Committee Republican staff members briefed reporters
Thursday on what they called an ongoing investigation into the first lady's
travels. The committee has collected information from the White House about
the number of times Clinton has flown to New York, the percentage of those
trips that had political purposes rather than official duties as first lady
and the estimated total cost of her air time. These calculations suggest
that Clinton's political trips to New York have cost taxpayers $141,407, but
the campaign has paid only $27,000 of that. These numbers do not include the
cost of the security detail that travels with the first lady.
But the Republican National Committee released data Thursday that estimate
the first lady's political travel costs at over $900,000. The RNC estimates
include such things as Clinton's trip to Buffalo with President Clinton in
January 1999, where the president made a speech. That event was prior to the
announcement of Mrs. Clinton's Senate candidacy.
RNC spokesman Tom Yu said, "we decided (the Buffalo trip) was political
travel because we hadn't seen Hillary travelling around for these kind of
events" prior to the time she began considering a Senate bid. The RNC
suggests that the Clinton campaign should reimburse the Air Force $70,000
for that trip alone -- the cost of two hours aboard Air Force One.
Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., told UPI Thursday the flight logs represent "a
million dollar campaign contribution by the American taxpayer, and not a
voluntary contribution." Asked whether New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani --
Clinton's Republican opponent for the Senate seat -- uses the resources of
the mayor's office when he travels, Sweeney replied: "Giuliani is required
and does indeed reimburse for all of the expenses that he's incurred. There
is no comparison to the million dollar raid that this represents."
Appropriations Committee staff members said they had made no attempt to
compare Clinton's travel reimbursement rate with the reimbursements of
President Clinton or President Bush in their campaigns for reelection.
The Clinton campaign issued a statement Thursday arguing that the "only
misuse of taxpayer funds is occurring at this hearing." The Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee released a statement accusing the GOP of
"misusing taxpayer dollars and squandering congressional resources on
partisan, political, pointless committee hearings designed only to embarrass
and politically damage the first lady."
The White House also called the hearing a political attack.
"The partisan nature of the hearing was revealed when the Republican
National Committee announced the hearing in a press release," said White
House spokesman Jim Kennedy.
Kennedy said the Clinton White House was operating consistent with the law
and in the same fashion as during prior Republican administrations.
"It's extremely hypocritical for Republican to ask for more reimburseme

Part I -- Al Gore's Skeletons: The Hammer Connection
Reed IrvineMarch 24, 2000

Read the book Gore: A Political Life by: Bob Zelnick...purchase your copy in our Online Store.
This begins a NewsMax.com special three-part series on Vice-President Al Gore. Reed Irvine is a media critic and Chairman of Accuracy in Media.

In January 1997, Bob Zelnick, a veteran ABC News correspondent, obtained permission from ABC to write a biography of Vice President Al Gore Jr.
In September, 1997, after he had spent eight months researching it, and only weeks before his contract was up for renewal, ABC News told him that if he wanted his contract renewed, he would have to give up writing the book and return the advance he had received from the publisher.
Zelnick says that he was told that it was a conflict of interest for him to write a book about someone he might be covering in the presidential contest a few years down the road.

Zelnick commented, "This is a standard that has never been applied by any network or any other news organization to any journalist. You should be happy when there are journalists who know enough to author a book on the subject.”
Zelnick refused to comply with the ABC demand, and "Gore, A Political Life" was published by Regnery last year. He is now teaching journalism at Boston University. His book is not one that the Gore campaign will be recommending to voters.
It would be out of character for the Clinton White House not to let ABC News know that it would prefer that Bob Zelnick not write a biography of Al Gore, and that is the most reasonable explanation for ABC’s sudden withdrawal of its approval of the project. The TV networks have shown that they like to do favors for the Clinton White House.
Early on in the project, Zelnick says he was informed by the vice president’s office that Gore had decided against cooperating with him.
Zelnick says that Gore’s office told him that he would "personally resent attempts to contact his family, particularly his aged parents.” This is understandable.
The Gore family has a closet full of skeletons, and when you aspire to the presidency of the United States you don’t want a nosey reporter opening up closet doors.
Zelnick has a good reputation as a reporter. During his more than two decades in the media, he covered Capitol Hill, the Middle East, Russia and the Pentagon. He won numerous journalism awards, including two American Bar Association Gavel Awards and two Emmys.
Hammer Ties "Extremely Sensitive”

Roy Neel, a former top Gore aide, told Zelnick that Gore was "extremely sensitive” about his father’s connection with the late Armand Hammer, the head of Occidental Petroleum, who was notorious for his close ties to the Soviet Union.
When Gore Sr. was first elected to Congress in 1938, he was a poor schoolteacher. But by the time he was elected to the Senate in 1952, he had become rich enough to live in a plush hotel on Washington’s embassy row and send Al Jr. to the expensive St. Albans School in Washington.
Armand Hammer had helped make Al Gore Sr. a wealthy man. Zelnick’s book and a new book just released in January, "The Buying of the President 2000" by Charles Lewis and published by his organization, the Center for Public Integrity, tell how Armand Hammer bought the services of Al Gore, Sr. and helped Al Jr. launch his political career.
Hammer’s father, Julius, had linked up with Lenin in 1907 and had agreed to become part of Lenin’s underground cadre dedicated to the proletariat revolution. After Lenin seized power in Russia in 1917, Julius used his company, Allied Drug and Chemical, to ship goods to the Soviet Union, and used money from the sale of diamonds smuggled to the United States to finance the Communist Labor Party. That name was later changed to the Communist Party, USA.
Lenin granted young Armand Hammer a monopoly on the manufacture of pencils in the Soviet Union. He used him to raise money in the United States through the sale of confiscated Czarist art and jewelry.
FBI director J. Edgar Hoover wanted to prosecute Hammer for his activities on behalf of the Soviet government, but Charles Lewis says that "Hammer had friends in Congress who, Hoover believed, would attempt to protect him from prosecution.” Hammer had bragged that he had Sen. Albert Gore Sr. "in my back pocket.”
Hammer helped Gore Sr. get started raising Black Angus cattle, giving him sperm from his own prize stock.
Zelnick says residents in the area where the Gore farm was located claim that Gore was able to sell his cattle a

Terminator/Suicide Seeds On Fast Track Despite Corporate Denials--Fwd

Coming soon, to farmers near you. An evil and demonic endeavor if EVER
there were one, research and development of so-called terminator or
suicide seeds, which have been genetically altered/manipulated so they
can NOT generate their own viable seed stock, is proceeding full speed
ahead.

Without doubt, this is one of the foremost anti-human Machiavellian
schemes yet devised by the Fourth Reich/New World Order; in particular
by the corporate "arm" thereof: a grotesque horror, monstrosity and
abomination of genuinely Biblical proportions which will have a DIRECT
and DRASTICALLY severe impact upon every human being upon the
face of the earth.

It's EVERYONE'S FOOD, stupid!

Suicide Seeds on the Fast Track

March 24, 2000

"We've continued right on with work on the Technology Protection System
[Terminator]. We never really slowed down. We're on target, moving ahead
to commercialize it. We never really backed off."--Harry Collins, Delta
& Pine Land Seed Co., January, 2000

A report released by the Rural Advancement Foundation International
(RAFI) reveals that Terminator and Traitor technology are riding a fast
track to commercialization. Terminator technology, the genetic
engineering of plants to produce sterile seeds, is universally
considered the most morally offensive application of agricultural
biotechnology, since over 1.4 billion people depend on farm-saved seeds.
Traitor technology, also known as genetic use restriction technology
(GURTs), refers to the use of an external chemical to switch on or off a
plant's genetic traits.

"After Monsanto and AstraZeneca publicly vowed not to commercialize
terminator seeds in 1999, governments and civil society organizations
were lulled into thinking that the crisis had passed. Nothing could be
further from the truth," said RAFI's Executive Director Pat Mooney.
"Despite mounting opposition from national governments and United
Nations' agencies, research on Terminator and Traitor (genetic trait
control) is moving full speed ahead."

According to RAFI, Delta & Pine Land, the world's largest cotton seed
company is moving aggressively to commercialize Terminator. And despite
massive protests, the U.S. Department of Agriculture supports and
defends its anti-farmer patent and research on suicide seeds. Last year,
AstraZeneca conducted field trials on genetic trait control technology
(Traitor technology) in the UK. According to industry sources, it is not
the first company to conduct field tests of this kind.

RAFI's report concludes that corporate commitments to disavow Terminator
are virtually meaningless in light of the pace of corporate takeovers.
Monsanto and AstraZeneca have each merged with other companies since
they pledged not to commercialize suicide seeds.

* On December 2, 1999 Novartis and AstraZeneca announced they would
spin-off and merge their agrochemical and seed divisions to create the
world's biggest agribusiness corporation -- to be named "Syngenta."

* On December 19, 1999 Monsanto announced that it will merge with drug
industry giant Pharmacia & Upjohn to create a new company, named
Pharmacia, with combined annual sales of $17 billion.

The Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) Jacques Diouf recently declared his opposition to
Terminator. In publicly rejecting Terminator, FAO's Diouf has come to
the defense of the 1.4 billion people who depend upon farm-saved seed
for their survival.

Among the national governments that have announced their intention to
oppose Terminator technology are Panama, India, Ghana, and Uganda.
India, one of the first governments to publicly reject Terminator,
explicitly prohibits Terminator genes in a draft bill now before the
Indian Parliament. Ghanaian Minister of Environment, Cletus Avoka, says
that his government will not tolerate the use of Terminator technology.
Panama's Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries writes that his
government "will adopt measures to prohibit the specific patents as well
as the technology in general." Ugandan officials have said that their
government is discussing measures to outlaw Terminator at the highest
levels of government.

Terminator and Traitor technologies are not limited to a single patent,
nor is the research confined to one or two companies. Delta & Pine Land

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Psychological Warfare and The MAJESTIC Documents: Little Evidence of
Deception

REDWOOD CITY, California, March 15, 2000 — In response to speculation
from
an unknown author on www.isso.org about linkage between psychological
warfare and the Majestic documents, Ryan S. Wood has written a paper
that
confronts head on the issue of psychological warfare and the role it
might
have played in UFO documents. The paper can be downloaded in adobe PDF
format from
http://www.majesticdocuments.com/authentication/pdf/psywar.pdf

"The paper reviews the key definitions of PSYWAR and PSYOP along with
the
central discriminates for testing for evidence of psychological warfare
and propaganda. The contents of the documents are reviewed as they
pertain
to psywar along with long standing experts in the field military
psychological warfare" said Dr. Robert Wood.

"What is key to remember is that the Majestic documents are beyond the
scope of domestic home grown fakers both in duration, complexity and
obscure valid facts. It is only the resources and expertise of CIA / KGB
or equivalent organizations that have the capability to create such a
rouse. Yet when you examine the documents for signs of such deception
there is none to be found. There are no clear objectives, there is no
history of building credibility with the target, there is a massive
attractant provided for foreign intelligence assets (a bad thing if you
want to keep something secret) and the long standing military experts
agree with this conclusion" said Ryan Wood.

The Majestic documents investigation team encourages you to download the
paper and read the evidence for yourself. The address is

[CTRL] Waco Protest Update 3-19-00

2000-03-24 Thread Andrew X98

In The
Name of God Most Knowing Most Truthful

Waco Protest Update: March 19, 2000
Waco Holocaust Electronic Museum
http://www.Public-Action.com/SkyWriter/WacoMuseumor
http://206.55.8.10/SkyWriter/WacoMuseum
Mt. Carmel Doe 32Autopsy photograph of the alleged remains of John-Mark
Stanley McBean

After being threaten at gun point by two
supporters of Clive Doyle on 3-12-00, and the subsequent refusal of the McLennan
County Sheriffs department to take a report on the incident, I decided to not
protest at the scene of the Waco Holocaust. I have been working this week to
bring this issue to the public and the superiors of officer Bud Koen. Let it be
known to all that care about this public crime against me that I was able to
record the incident to the Waco police: Report # 00-15973 taken by Officer Betty
Marcum. Hopefully, by this information being made public I will be safe this
weekend.

Why should I risk my life, which is clearly in
danger? The answer is simple; I am the watchman for the martyrs of the Waco
Holocaust. It is my job to sound the alarm if there is a problem in "New
Jerusalem" were 82 human beings were Murdered by Bill Clinton. And what is
the alarm?

The new church was
founded on the Sabbath 9-18-99 by "Clive Doyle."

Now if you are not a
believer in the laws of God this means nothing to you, but if you care about the
ones that gave their lives for those laws then you understand that this is an
Abomination That will Make all those that enter it Desolate. If you care about
these people then stand with me in opposition to this "Government
Church".

I just released a video this week showing Clive
Doyle and  Alex Jones with his so called "Patriots" for who they
are, i.e. Bill Clinton Stooges. A Full review of this video by Carol Valentine,
a long time champion of the Martyrs, is available by writing me.
We must stand against this slanderous corruption
of truth which sreeks to cast the honor of the Masrtyrs to the
ground..

Since 3-12-00 the few students that are here in
Waco have been threatened by Clive Doyle and his goons with being thrown off the
property if they are seen with me again. One of these students was even
threatened with being turned into the immigration authorities!

We know from the video that Clive Doyle has
already proven himself to be a "Snitch" for the police. In the video
we see him in action. There is no reason to doubt that he will do it again.
While his actions are wretched in their nature they are helping the students to
see this agent for what he really is.

Sabbath Meeting will be held this
Saturday March 26, 2000 at the gate of Mt.Carmel.

The "Waco Protest" will
be held this Sunday March 27, 2000 at the gate of Mt.Carmel.

Come and pray for the martyrs of
God on the Sabbath and Protest their continued oppression at the hands of the
Bill Clinton Murderers of The Chiuldren of Waco.

Waco Survivor Story(s) --True or False? The September
9, 1999 edition of Salon magazine carried a story written by  Branch
Davidian David Thibodeau, whom (we are told) survived the April 19, 1993 inferno
at the Mt. Carmel Center in Waco.  Among other things, David T. discusses
that fateful day.
Can we rely on David Thibodeau's account of the events of April 19,
1993?  Please read the following and come to your own conclusions.
I see two major problems with Mr. Thibodeau's account(s): (a) important
elements in his accounts keep changing, and (b) none of the accounts are
credible.
Some history:  By the summer of 1995, the news of how the mothers an
children died in the Mt.  Carmel center had made the rounds in the Waco
protest movement: The moms and kids had hidden from the CS in an old concrete
records storage room that was being used as a pantry in 1993.  Instead of
protecting the moms and kids, the concrete room became their tomb.
The story worried me from the beginning.  Mothers are practical
people.  When the air is poisoned, the practical solution is to get
away from it.  But the concrete room was a catch basin for poisoned
air.  It was windowless.  It had a doorway, but no door.
Poisoned air entering the room from the doorway would have nowhere to
escape.  Why would the moms take their babies to a catch basin to
escape the CS?
I wanted to know more.  So in July, 1995 I interviewed David Thibodeau
on the telephone.
I asked David T. whether he had seen the mothers and children on April
19.  First he said no.  Then I asked who told the mothers and children
to go to the concrete room.  He said he did not know.  However, he
confirmed that the mothers had gas masks and the children had no gas masks, so
to protect the children, the mothers had buckets of water and cloths and with
them; the mothers dunked the cloths into the buckets of water and covered the
children's faces with wet cloths.
But how could David Thibodeau know what was happening in the concrete room if
he had not seen the mother
