Originally, Time approached the topic with a sceptics gaze to debunk the NT, but were in the end stunned and amazed with the irrefutable abundance of evidence available, ". existing copies of the New Testament are far older and more numerous than those of any other ancient body of literature ." Shannon's guru, Achyara S of course, is beyond the capacity for rational presentation of pure facts, as she relishes hallucinations whilst she communes with weird "entities" for her style of "truth". Such vixens vexed with her inherent Gnostic obsessive conspiratorial "Grand Delusion" religion, a superstition and extremism which blends its voice with the so-called "spiritual" Aryans and their politico pretexts which essentially undergird their political agenda for the neo-Gnostic Reich. To this, myopic Shannon appears completely blind and oblivious to the inherint political nuances of this style of author, and their actual wannabe-Nazi agenda, hidden behind the facade of "Researcher." Typical of the site Shannon listed, is the customary ancient religious and modern New Age, neo-Gnostic hatred of the Jews. In a section from Achyara S titled "Emails I Have Loved," we have the enlightened Achyara S devotees express both theirs and Achyara's disgust of ". the foaming-at-the-mouth Jews ." and ". the Jewish crap." In her hatred of things Jewish she further believes ". murder is against murdering "your neighbor," i.e., another Jew ...," in other words, the implication is that Achyara S believes that Jews imagine it is quite acceptable to murder, so long as the victims are non-Jews. These are the type of kooks Shannon peddles as his authorities alongside on what he myopically imagines to be "Christianity." The lunatic and self-attested "son of god," David Icke is another Shannon incessantly bends the knee to, and invokes with superstitious awe. It's clear that Shannon has little ability for critical thought or discernment, much like these foolish authors he repetitiously espouses with tedium. In addition, the site Shannon recommends as espousing some form of "truth," is riddled with the usual antiquated bunkum of a worldwide Jewish Conspiracy, the customary guise for anti-Semitism. Achyara's hatred of, and inane frothing at Christianity is no less than that of her hatred of Jews, as she resorts to regurgitation of outdated jibes of long dead sceptics and bigots, many of whose names when mentioned, even well-informed modern sceptics themselves grow red-faced over! STEWART After six years and nearly $60 million of taxpayer money, the Whitewater investigation, for all practical purposes, is over. To the extent that they will face no criminal charges, Bill and Hillary Clinton have been exonerated. But what, for all the anguish, time and money, have we learned? The Whitewater investigation germinated in 1992, in a culture of mutual political destruction. During a heated campaign for the Democratic nomination, Bill Clinton had already suffered what his closest aides openly referred to as "two strikes": the draft and Gennifer Flowers controversies. When Whitewater burst into public view ó in a March 8, 1992, New York Times article by Jeff Gerth that remains a model of investigative reporting ó it was seen by the Clintons and their allies as the dreaded "third strike" from which there might be no recovery. The potential scandal had to be blunted at all costs, not because the Whitewater acts were crimes, but because they were embarrassing. The Clintons made a series of public statements that can most charitably be deemed "misleading." Mr. Clinton, of course, was elected, but the Whitewater record, replete with evasions and misstatements, provided ample fodder for those opposed to the president. After Vincent Foster, the White House counsel, committed suicide, and after Whitewater records were clumsily and suspiciously removed from his office, the rabid Clinton haters went into high gear. They piled their own falsehoods on top of the Clintons' evasions, none more preposterous than the notion that Mr. Foster was murdered, preferably by Hillary Clinton herself. By 1994, everyone was calling for the appointment of an independent counsel ó the Clintons in order to lay the Whitewater affair to rest and their opponents in order to destroy them. The truth was unlikely to emerge however. The Clintons, fearing embarrassment, continued to stonewall, while their opponents pounced on their recalcitrance as evidence of guilt. The independent counsel's mission was to get to the bottom of the morass. Kenneth Starr and his top deputies were not instinctive politicians, and they became caught up in a political war for which they were woefully unprepared and ill- suited. The White House and its allies relentlessly attacked the independent counsel for what they thought were both illegal and unprincipled tactics, like intimidating witnesses and leaking to the press. Mr. Starr has been vindicated in the courts in nearly every instance, and he and his allies were maligned to a degree that will someday be seen as grossly unfair. Nonetheless, that the Whitewater investigation cost what it did, took as long as it did and meandered so far afield from its original mission is preposterous. The investigation unfolded with an inexorable logic that made sense at every turn, yet lost all sight of the public purpose it was meant to serve. Mr. Starr's failure was not one of logic or law, but of simple common sense. From very early on, it should have been apparent that a criminal case could never be made against the Clintons. Who would testify against them? The critical witnesses in the case were Mr. Clinton himself, his Whitewater partners, James and Susan McDougal, and David Hale, an Arkansas businessman. In 1994, early in the Whitewater investigation, Mr. Hale pleaded guilty to bank and mail fraud. Mr. McDougal, too, was convicted on 18 felony counts stemming from his operation of a corrupt Arkansas savings and loan. He died in prison while serving his Whitewater sentence. Mr. Clinton, we now know, cannot be relied on to tell the truth when his self-interest is at stake. Susan McDougal refused to answer prosecutors' questions, even in the face of imprisonment. Whatever the suspicions about the Clintons' actions, no prosecutor would take such witnesses before a jury. The investigation does not clear the Clintons in all respects. As far as the Whitewater matters themselves, the evidence goes a long way toward exonerating them. On the obstruction of justice issues ó lying under oath, concealing evidence, pressuring witnesses ó the evidence is stronger, but still far short of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, as Robert Ray, the latest independent counsel, concluded. We will probably never know the whole truth about these matters. That is a fact of life in many criminal investigations. The independent counsel law is already a casualty of Whitewater and its excesses. But as long as a culture of mutual political destruction reigns in Washington, the need for some independent resolution of charges against top officials, especially the president, will not go away. After all, we did get something for our nearly $60 million. The charges against the Clintons were credibly resolved. To me, the leitmotif of Whitewater is lies. Lies, large and small, begot more

Bush called a New York Times reporter a bad name and didn't apologize. I like that. One local fellow remarked that anyone who knows anything about the New York Times knows that Bush was using a euphemism. I don't know if he was recalling when the New York Times covered up Joseph Stalin's crimes in the 1930s or when it was selling Fidel Castro as the new George Washington of the Caribbean. When it comes to spotting evil on the left, the New York Times and the Central Intelligence Agency have similar records. At any rate, anyone offended by Bush's remarks, are those who are already committed to Prince Albert Gore, privileged child and tobacco farmer. Lest you worry about the sensitive feelings of American journalists, let me reassure you that there is no more arrogant or profane trade in the United States. People these days are used to the idea of slanted news and biased coverage. The press, by and large, however is blind to its own sins. It's not just the natural defensive arrogance of an institution accountable to no one, but when a liberal pronounces a conservative a fool, he thinks that he's just telling the truth. To a liberal, the idea, even the possibility, that he, the liberal, might be wrong is strictly beyond the pale. Of course even liberals are entitled to their opinions, but if they are journalists, they are not entitled to slant the news to bolster their opinions. That's where American journalism has gone wrong. The formula for slanting the news is quite simple. If you don't like the guy, you maximize his mistakes and minimize his successes; if you like him, you reverse the process. You can watch this process in the presidential campaign. Remember, in-depth national surveys have shown that America's journalistic elite are, with rare exceptions, liberal Democrats. Any slip of the tongue by George W. Bush will be big news while Al Gore's more serious sins will be ignored or minimized. Some years ago, for an article in a journalism trade magazine, an enterprising reporter interviewed editors who had been interviewed for news stories. You guessed it. The editors had the same complaints that readers have. Many said it was obvious the reporter had already decided what the story was going to be even before he asked the first question. Some complained of being misquoted. This is all inside stuff and of no real interest to you, the reader, except as a reminder to read critically anything you see in the press or on television. The most insidious sin is to take things out of context. Another technique is ignoring people with opinions the liberal paper doesn't like. I know of one case in which a woman was elected president of the national Right to Life organization. The newspaper's readers never knew, even though she lived within blocks of the office. Yet when the late Abbie Hoffman made an appearance at a university (he wasn't late at that time) well out of the paper's circulation area, it gave his puerile ranting two pages. A similar technique translated to television is to pick the handsomest, most-articulate person you can find to represent the opinion you favor and the ugliest, least-articulate person you can find to represent the opposing view. Then, of course, you just turn on the cameras and let them have a "fair" debate. View and read everything with skepticism. Remember that truth and information are not synonyms. And do learn to think for yourself. -Caveat Lector- CommentMax The Great Pretenders of the USA Dr. James Hirsen September 8, 2000 Colin Powell recently gave a speech on the subject of military preparedness. He evoked a phrase that so aptly and succinctly describes what has been occurring in the Clinton/Gore administration over the past several years. Many have tried to pinpoint the administration's secret strategy but Powell has nailed it right on the head. General Powell spoke of those current White House reps who pretend that our military readiness is fine, even the "best we've ever seen." He points out that the administration wants to pretend that our aircraft operations are at an acceptable level, that junior officers are not leaving at an alarming rate, and that we do not have the highest attrition rate of officers we've seen in decades. But what the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff may or may not have realized is that with great clarity he has summarized not only the administration's attitude toward the military, but he has managed to identify its entire governing approach. The Clinton administration has been engaged in a serious, long-running game of "let's pretend." Here's how it has worked. The Clinton/Gore administration, in essence, has said. *let's pretend that our schools are safe and our kids are learning. *let's pretend that crime is down, that guns shoot people, and that violence on T.V. and in movies doesn't really influence behavior. *let's pretend that national security remains a top priority, that no nuclear missiles are pointed at the U.S., and that the communist Chinese are our friends. *let's pretend that a baby is not a baby before it is born. *let's pretend that the era of big government is over, that government is responsible for good economic times, and that people don't mind being overtaxed. *let's pretend that the most qualified people get cabinet positions. *let's pretend that volunteers get paid. *let's pretend that people lie to their diaries, that documents magically appear after long absences, and that memories are sharp until questioned under oath. *let's pretend that no one actually hires aides and no one really fires entire offices of workers. *let's pretend that the IRS isn't targeting enemies of the administration and that the theft of FBI files is just a bureaucratic snafu. *let's pretend that carrying a Bible means you're very religious and holding hands means you believe in the sanctity of marriage. *let's pretend that words mean whatever we want them to. The examples are endless but the truth is that a game of pretense can be quite dangerous. What toll has this counterfeit contest had on our sovereignty, our moral identity, our economic stability or our national security? Most likely, we will not know the price we have paid until we are faced with a bona fide crisis. One thing for certain, the most dangerous game of all is for our nation to continue to play let's pretend for a few more rounds and convince ourselves we won't suffer the biggest loss of all. Veroljub Raketic, the presiding judge, said the arrest warrants would be issued for the convicted leaders and their sentences would start as soon as they are arrested. During the four-day trial in the biggest courtroom in the Palace of Justice, in which 14 seats labeled with the names of the accused were left vacant, the officially appointed lawyer defending Clinton told the court he could cite as an extenuating circumstances that Clinton came from "an incomplete family and lived with a step-father which probably left a mark on his overall behavior." Another court-appointed lawyer defending Albright asked the court to take into account her repressed psychological state as a woman subordinated to the U.S. president and the fact that she had never before been sentenced for war crimes. Apart from Clinton and Albright the convicted included Defense Secretary William Cohen; British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Foreign Secretary Robin Cook; French President Jacques Chirac, Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine and Defense Minister Alain Richard; German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Foreign Minister Joschka Fisher and Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping; the former and present NATO Secretaries General Javier Solana and Lord George Robertson; and the former NATO Supreme Commander in Europe, Gen. Wesley Clark. They were ordered to pay legal costs within 15 days of the sentences taking effect under pain of enforcement. The indictments said that the accused were responsible for NATO forces using 31,000 shells each with 300 grams of depleted uranium at eight locations in Serbia and Montenegro and that 10 tons of this kind of ammunition were dropped on Kosovo. This specifically polluted the environments of villages in the vicinity of Vranje, Bujanovac and Presevo in southern Serbia causing various types of cancer and death, according to the indictments, the court said. The Bulgarian dissident Georgy Markov was on Waterloo Bridge in September 1978 when he was stabbed by a poisoned umbrella and died four days later. The killer, who appeared to bump into his victim at a bus stop, was never caught. Yesterday the Bulgarian authorities said they have stopped looking because the crime had been committed 20 years ago. In 1990 a double agent who worked for Russia and Britain, Oleg Gordievsky, revealed in his memoirs that the Soviet KGB had provided the poison and had coached Bulgarian secret services in how to commit the murder. This was confirmed by the former head of the KGB, Oleg Kalugin, who claimed that the murder had been ordered by Bulgaria's Communist dictator, Todor Zhivkov. He died in jail in 1998 still refusing to confirm that he had been responsible. At the moment they have frozen the project and it==s not clear whether it will be done elsewhere if at all. And of course the crime that has generated such interest has also GENERATED GREAT FEAR in the media because this taboo is the most fearsome in a way of all the taboos. But in so working on ABC's budget for that time, I was able to go to Europe and elsewhere. And I finally presented some information to the police and the FBI during several meetings in Boulder. I haven't talked about it publicly until now, but I think now that I've waited more then what use to be called a "decent interval". So I'll talk about this a little bit. If you take your mind back to the morning of the crime---I say the morning of the crime because I think its clear what I mean and that day after Christmas. The call came into the Boulder police at about 5:52am and thus began the time-line. The kind of work I do is forensic work on time-lines. That's what I did in the Simpson case in (my book) Killing Time. That's what I would like you to follow me on. After that call comes in, a uniformed policeman comes to the house by about 6:00 am and then more personnel arrive. The morning goes by; in the early afternoon the body is found, and sometime in the evening the coroner arrives---and that's the rough time-line of that day. For several hours during the morning, a Boulder police detective was alone at the house while family and friends walked about and generally, completely co-opted the crime scene. Since that first day until this hour the lawyers and the pundits and experts and media commentators have never ceased to state that the Boulder police did not maintain the crime scene. In fact, they destroyed the crime scene and they went so far as to create the most awkward move perhaps in the history of a homicide investigation in asking John Ramsey to search the house whereupon he found his daughter, carried her upstairs, and laid her out in front of the Christmas tree. All this has been rehearsed and repeated endlessly in the media and its been stated by the most serious experts that the case will probably never, ever go to trial because of the police mishandling of that day. What is more (it is perceived) that the police didn't take the expert advice that such an amateur police department from such a little town would have needed. And there was the FBI offering to help at every step of the way and finally trying to salvage the case by inviting everyone to Quantico, Virginia; then helping with the presentation. And that is the general idea or story line of the case. MCFARLAND: Yes, one of the detectives, Linda Arndt filed a lawsuit over her dismissal. FREED: Now, if I may, Dr. McFarland, ask you a few questions? MCFARLAND: Sure FREED: How did it come to pass that, in your opinion, that the Boulder police were in charge of the crime scene in general for about eight hours with a lone detective there. And how is it that this detective and this police force had never held themselves out as experts on terrorism or kidnapping. Farben as a slave labor camp that manufactured rubber and other materials for the Nazi war effort and "recycled" gold fillings, human hair and other substances derived from those worked to death or killed in the gas chambers. At the end of WWII I.G. Farben was transformed into BASF, Bayer and Hoescht. Rockefeller/Standard Oil was the largest stockholder in I.G. Farben and I.G. Farben was-next to Rockefeller-the largest shareholder in Standard Oil. Presidents Roosevelt and Truman considered Standard Oil's executives and Rockefeller to be traitors to America. John D. Rockefeller was also the world's biggest promoter of Eugenics, the pseudo-science of racial differences, selective breeding and "race betterment". Among the "scientists" his foundation funded was Auschwitz's infamous doctor of death Josef Mengele. Eugenics led directly to the Holocaust. Today, Rockefeller foundations continue to fund Eugenics programs worldwide under the guise of improving human health, population control and disease control. Professor Nagy obtained a minutely detailed seven-page document prepared by the US Defence Intelligence Agency, issued the day after the war started, entitled Iraq Water Treatment Vulnerabilities and circulated to all major allied Commands. It states that Iraq had gone to considerable trouble to provide a supply of pure water to its population. It had to depend on importing specialised equipment and purification chemicals, since water is "heavily mineralised and frequently brackish". The report stated: "Failing to secure supplies will result in a shortage of pure drinking water for much of the population. This could lead to increased incidents, if not epidemics, of disease and certain pure-water dependent industries becoming incapacitated" The report concludes: "Full degradation of the water treatment system probably will take at least another six months." During allied bombing campaigns on Iraq the country's eight multi-purpose dams had been repeatedly hit, simultaneously wrecking flood control, municipal and industrial water storage, irrigation and hydroelectric power. Four of seven major pumping stations were destroyed, as were 31 municipal water and sewerage facilities - 20 in Baghdad, resulting in sewage pouring into the Tigris. Water purification plants were incapacitated throughout Iraq. Article 54 of the Geneva Convention states: "It is prohibited to attack, destroy or render useless objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population" and includes foodstuffs, livestock and "drinking water supplies and irrigation works". The results of the allied bombing campaign were obvious when Dr David Levenson visited Iraq immediately after the Gulf War, on behalf of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. He said: "For many weeks people in Baghdad - without television, radio, or newspapers to warn them - brought their drinking water from the Tigris, in buckets. "Dehydrated from nausea and diarrhoea, craving liquids, they drank more of the water that made them sick in the first place." Water-borne diseases in Iraq today are both endemic and epidemic. They include typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis, cholera and polio (which had previously been eradicated), along with a litany of others. A child with dysentery in 1990 had a one in 600 chance of dying - in 1999 it was one in 50. The then US Navy Secretary John Lehman estimated that 200,000 Iraqis died in the Gulf War. Dr Levenson estimates many thousands died from polluted water. Chlorine and essential equipment parts needed to repair and clear the water system have been banned from entering the country under the UN "hold"system. Ohio Democrat Representative Tony Hall has written to American Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, saying he shares concerns expressed by Unicef about the "profound effects the deterioration of Iraq's water supply and sanitation systems on children's health". Overview
As Members of the National Association of Broadcasters began
their three day national conventional in San Francisco yesterday,
activists from all over the country began descending on the city
to protest the corporate commercialism that the NAB represents,
it's misrepresentation of crucial issues such as homelessness,
immigration, and globalization, and its aggressive campaign against
Low Power FM.
While the NAB claims that microradio interferes with their "business;"
community groups claim that the NAB interferes with our democracy.
As activists confront NAB convention-goers, the IMC will be there
to give voice to the growing movement of people who insist that public
access to the airwaves is a non-negotiable demand in a democratic society.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Radio broadcasters are meeting to figure out how best
to expand their reach into the new digital frontier, but not everyone
is sending out the welcome wagon.
Protestors here at the National Association of Broadcasters Radio Show
fear that commercial broadcasters will limit choice and prevent
community voices on the digital airwaves in much the same way they
control today's media.
"Ever since the NAB was founded 78 years ago, they have been acting
against the public interest," said Steve Rendall, senior analyst for
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, a media watchdog group that
co-sponsored Thursday's protest.
"At every turn NAB is strategically between the people and their
property: the airwaves," Rendall said.
While Colin Powell was addressing the NAB audience inside, the
"National Association of Brainwashers" held its own mock press
conference outside the Moscone Center.
The group was protesting the consolidation of the media since the
Telecommunications Act of 1996, which loosened regulations on media
acquisitions within geographic markets. According to FAIR, more than
4,000 radio stations have been acquired since the legislation was
passed, and minority ownership of radio stations has declined by 9
percent.
The faux executives and celebrity impersonators -- including CEO
"Rob R. Baron" and talk-show host "Howard Sternum", were promoting the
"all commercials, all the time" network that stresses homogeneity and
is subservient to corporations.
"I'm on 554 stations so far, and I should be on every one of them,"
said the shock-jock impersonator, who repeatedly mocked Howard Stern's
proclivity for profanity by saying "tits" and "penis" at every
opportunity.
The parody players announced that they were merging the NAB with the
NRA so that "if you don't listen to Howard, we can put a gun to your
head."
Andrea Buffa, executive director of the Media Alliance, which also
participated in the protest, said the NAB is "like the NRA, except
they want to kill off free speech."
Lampooning the influence of large corporations on broadcasters, the
group also showed fake commercial spots for Nike ("Because your kids
shouldn't have to make their own shoes"), Gap ("We put the sweat in
sweatshops") and Apple Computer ("Think just like us").
Rendall said the protest was necessary to bring the public's attention
to three major issues: the NAB's threat to the Federal Communications
Commission's recent decision to begin licensing low-power FM

In 1993-1994 he gave $112,500 to Democrats just three months after being included in an August 1994 China trade trip. In August 1994 Bernard Schwartz accompanied Ron Brown on the Presidential Business Development Mission trade trip to China. At the behest of Bill Clinton, Schwartz met with officials of the Chinese defense industry including Chinese army Lt. Gen. Shen Rong-Jun, and Liu Ji-Yuan the minister of China Aerospace Corp. China Aerospace manufactures all Chinese army ballistic missiles and space rockets. After contributing, Schwartz received huge China satellite contracts at a time when his company was not doing well. In this election cycle Schwartz has donated over $600,000 directly to the Democrats or directly to Democrat candidates including Hillary Clinton and Sen. Ted Kennedy. Schwartz denies buying access. Another company that denies it has insider access at the highest level is the trading firm Goldman Sachs. Former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin worked at Goldman Sachs before coming to the Clinton administration to run money policy. Documents obtained using the Freedom of Information Act show that Gore campaign chairman Commerce Secretary William Daley met in October 1997 with Goldman Sachs and the leader of an Asian firm reported to be "an intelligence-collection front for China." The documents show that then Commerce Secretary Daley met with Chinese billionaire Li Ka-Shing during a closed luncheon sponsored by the powerful investment firm Goldman Sachs. Daley currently operates and controls Al Gore's campaign. Li Ka-Shing's company, Hutchison Whampoa, currently operates and controls the two ports on the Panama Canal, the Pacific port of Balboa and the Atlantic port of Cristobal. The meeting was held onboard the Goldman Sachs' boat "Monkey's Uncle" as part of an informal "talk" between Secretary Daley, Li and several "influential business people." The documents show that Daley's meeting onboard the "Monkey's Uncle" included a Mr. Duo from China Resources, a firm reported by Senator Fred Thompson, R. Tenn., to be "an agent of espionage -- economic, military, and political -- for China." After the Daley meeting, Goldman Sachs was given the exclusive and very lucrative stock offering for Petrochina, an oil company wholly owned by the Chinese government. One other major stockholder in Petrochina is, of course, Chinese tycoon Li Ka-Shing. In the 2000 campaign, the Goldman Sachs Political Action Committee alone has donated over $200,000 split evenly between Republican and Democrat candidates. Still, China is not alone when it comes to corruption politics. The newly found capitalists in Beijing do have some strange bedfellows. For example, the U.S. energy industry is not lacking for attention from inside the Clinton/Gore fundraising machine. Federal Election Commission records show that Mission Energy CEO John Bryson donated money to the Clinton/Gore campaign and contributed money to Clinton's legal defense fund. Mission Energy is also a partner of Indonesia's Lippo group, a consortium part-owned by Indonesian billionaire Moctar Riady and the Chinese army-owned finance company CITIC. Moctar Riady is also accused of illegally donating money to the Clinton-Gore political campaigns. In 1994, Edison Mission Energy landed a trade trip with Ron Brown to Indonesia. As a result of that trip, Mission Energy ended up with a contract to build the Paiton I Indonesian coal fired power plant. Previously released documents from the U.S. Commerce Department clearly show that the Paiton I project was actually filled with known corruption from President Suharto's administration. Paiton I was billed as the first "private" electric plant in Indonesia. However, private ownership in Indonesia equated into owned and operated by the Suharto "First Family." The partners in the Paiton I consortium included Edison Mission Energy, Mitsui Co., Ltd. of Japan, General Electric Capital Corporation, and P.T. Batu Hitam Perkasa. Just by co-incidence, of course, P.T. Batu was owned by Indonesian dictator Suharto's youngest daughter, Titek Prabowo, and her brother-in-law, Hashim Djojohadikusumo. Prawabo's brother-in-law, Hashim, also received an exclusive, no bid, no-cut contract to supply coal for the power plant. Hashim's financial backer in his coal mining business is Moctar Riady and the Lippo Group. The Luhu-class guided-missile destroyer Qingdao and the Fuqing-class oiler Taicang led the visit to the U.S. Navy base. In early September, the two warships visited Pearl Harbor and then proceeded to Everett as part of a visit to the United States. According to U.S. Navy documentation, the Qingdao is the flagship of senior People's Liberation Army navy representative Rear Adm. Lu Fangqiu, the chief of staff of the North Sea fleet. During the visit on Sept. 14, Lu was given a personal tour of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson. U.S. Navy public affairs Petty Officer Elsass confirmed the Chinese navy visit, including Lu's tour of the U.S.S. Carl Vinson. "This was a goodwill visit," stated Elsass from her office. "The Chinese also toured the Boeing plant, toured the Bremerton Naval Station, played soccer and attended a social event. There was no documented briefings or real documentation given to the Chinese." She added, "Chinese navy personnel shopped at our post exchange. I understand our PX was more popular than the Vinson tour." A noted American defense adviser and author, however, contends the Chinese military visits have a more sinister purpose than shopping at the U.S. Navy post exchange. "This is another example of the out-of-control U.S-China military relationship sponsored by the Clinton-Gore administration," stated William Triplett, author of "Year of the Rat." "The Chinese army is coming here to the U.S. to learn how we fight. Then the People's Liberation Army goes to Moscow and buys the best weapons Russia can throw against us," said Triplett. "Russia is selling China weapons like the SS-N-22 Moskit missile," said Triplett. "The Moskit has one purpose -- killing American carriers and Aegis warships. When you start buying missiles like the SS-N-22 Moskit, it becomes pretty obvious what you intend to do with them." According to Navy documentation, Lu and six of his officers paid a visit Sept. 17 to the U.S.S. Carl Vinson, commanded by Capt. Bruce W. Clingan. The Navy press office noted that Clingan told Lu the carrier's onboard computers have the ability to land a fighter jet automatically. Clingan stated, however, that some pilots do not like this function. "Speaking as a pilot, I prefer to control the plane the last 20 seconds myself," he said. In addition to the tour of the nuclear carrier Vinson, "more than 1,000 Chinese service members [took] advantage of the opportunity to see the inside" of the guided-missile cruiser U.S.S. Chancellorsville. The Chinese navy tour of the Chancellorsville took place during the early September visit to Pearl Harbor. Documents previously obtained from the Pentagon show that the U.S. Defense Department has resumed military-to-military exchanges with the Chinese army, perhaps in violation of congressional mandates to limit such contact. Documents obtained from the U.S. Army showed that Chinese military officers were being briefed on "joint" war fighting skills at Ft. Monroe, Va. The briefings raised concerns inside Capitol Hill that the Pentagon was training the Chinese army for war. The Clinton-Gore administration has previously been accused of abusing the military-to-military contacts with China. In May 1999, the White House allowed the Chinese army air force to tour Edwards Air Force base in California. The Pentagon and White House maintained that the visiting Chinese were civilians and part of an air-traffic control program. However, according to the documentation, Chinese air force officers attended classes given by the U.S. Air Force on "combat readiness," including a simulated F-16 training mission with "bombing and strafing." The recent U.S. Navy statement noted that during the visit to the United States, "Chinese and U.S. sailors will have the opportunity to interact and take unclassified tours of each other's ships. The Chinese will have the opportunity to learn more about the United States and experience the unique cultures in Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest." The statement added: "The U.S.-China relationship is of great importance to the long-term political, military and economic interests of our nation. The navies are the two largest in the Asia-Pacific region. Interaction between them increases mutual understanding and confidence." Triplett disagrees with the new U.S. Navy assessment of Chinese military intentions. According to Triplett, China is forming a new partnership with Russia against America. They are aggressively working to force her off the air by pressuring advertisers to drop her show because of comments she's made about homosexuals, including calling homosexuality a "biological error" and saying that gay behavior is "deviant" because it deviates from the heterosexual norm. Now, it's true that "Dr. Laura" sometimes makes even her admirers wince at her tone or choice of words. But admirers she has. Every day millions of Americans tune in to her top-rated talk show on which she champions traditional values. I'm often one of them, and I hardly remember Dr. Laura discussing homosexuality. But to hear the gay [homosexual] movement and their allies tell it, these comments, which they themselves keep repeating, are a daily call to arms, not a rapid response once offered in the crush of a three-hour radio broadcast. This is not to minimize Dr. Laura's beliefs on the matter. Like tens of millions of Americans, including myself, she simply believes that homosexual behavior is morally wrong. But the activist community is desperate to move the issue away from her mainstream-though-politically-incorrect views on the issue and focus only on a few biting comments they can evidence as her "hate-filled homophobia." But there is really no way in which Dr. Laura could have discussed her beliefs on homosexuality that would have caused the activists to behave any differently. They simply won't tolerate a person of her stature offering a notion of anything less than a full moral endorsement of gay behavior. For no longer is the homosexual movement about tolerance, about being treated fairly, with respect and equality under the law, something all decent Americans should and do embrace. It is about forcing all of us to morally affirm the gay lifestyle - even when our own deeply held religious or moral beliefs teach otherwise. Consider the most "in-your-face" strategy possible: public, practicing gays forcing themselves into the ranks of the Boy Scouts of America, a private service organization that has admirably trained and encouraged young men for a century, and which doesn't admit open homosexuals. The Scouts had never made a public display of their moral stance, but the activists did - they sued. Yet when the Supreme Court recently affirmed the right of the Scouts as a private organization to decide their own moral course, that was, well, intolerable. So now when it comes to the Boy Scouts, according to a recent report in the Christian Science Monitor, "... Gay-rights groups across the nation are working to paint the 6 million-strong organization as a bastion of bigots undeserving of community support." That's tolerance? The gay [homosexual] movement consistently maintains that not embracing homosexual behavior is akin to racism. But this is condescending to both racial minorities and gays. It may well be that sexual orientation is deeply ingrained - those of us who believe in original sin know that's true of the sin with which we all struggle - but behavior is not ingrained. And as a consortium of scholars once wrote in an issue of "First Things" on the matter as excerpted in the Wall Street Journal: "Any discipline of denial or restraint has been popularly depicted as unhealthy and dehumanizing. We insist, however, that it is dehumanizing to define ourselves by our desires alone." Nevertheless, the gay-rights [[ homosexual-rights] movement is even intent on crushing any notion that homosexual behavior can be changed, no matter how much a gay man or woman wants that change. That's one premise in a book overtly sympathetic to the homosexual movement, "Just the Facts," backed by a coalition of educators and gay organizations and recently distributed to every public school district in the United States. JWR columnist Mona Charen quotes Kevin Jennings, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, as saying of the book that "gays [homosexuals] need to receive support from their schools. They need to receive affirmation." Bingo. It's not tolerance the movement seeks any longer. It's full moral endorsement even at the cost of riding roughshod over deeply held religious beliefs and freedom of association and expression. America Family Association today criticized a new television commercial
from John Hancock Financial Services, which shows two lesbians adopting a
baby and declaring themselves a "family."
"What John Hancock has done is to promote same-sex couples as the
equivalent of a husband and wife," said AFA Vice President Tim Wildmon.
"That is insulting to millions of people who believe in the sanctity of
marriage and the family. And it is especially outrageous that the company
ran the ad during the Olympics, when children are watching."
The commercial shows two women at an airport holding a baby, and one of
the women whispers to the sleeping baby, "This is your new home." In the
conversation, the viewer hears that the child's "papers"? evidently
adoption papers? are in the diaper bag.
Then one says, "Can you believe this?.We're a family."
A slightly different version of the ad ran at the end of July. The comment
about the lesbians being a family was followed by one woman saying,
"You'll make a great mom," to which the other responds, "So will you."
The controversy over that version led to a Chicago Tribune story by
Barbara Brotman. When Brotman contacted John Hancock, she was told that
the company was deleting the comments about family and motherhood.
However, the newer version of the commercial only drops the comments about
motherhood.
"I have little doubt that, after the Chicago Tribune story ran, the
company came under tremendous pressure from homosexual activists. John
Hancock apparently buckled," Wildmon said.
In its own defense, John Hancock told Brotman, "We absolutely were not
trying to communicate or promote or endorse one particular lifestyle or
another."
Wildmon, however, found that too hard to believe. "That's preposterous.
Would the ad look any different if the company were promoting lesbian
families? The truth is, John Hancock took a page out of the homosexual
playbook and declared two lesbians with a baby to be a family."
ACTION NEEDED
Please contact the John Hancock Company and politely ask them to stop the
promotion of homosexuality to our children through the television
advertisement. Inform Chairman Brown that this fierce attack on the
institution of the American family will weigh heavily upon your current
and future choice of insurance provider.

The Pentagon notified Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., of the decision last week, following a request by the Department of Veterans Affairs in August to provide information that could help the department process claims filed by veterans who believe they suffered health damage from their participation in the tests. The decision to provide the names and other information was first reported Wednesday by CBS News. The fact that the exercises were held has been known previously, although originally the work was classified secret. The tests were among 113 conducted as part of a project called SHAD, or Shipboard Hazard and Defense. Some apparently involved the use of chemical and biological agents, although the Pentagon said the two of interest to the Department of Veterans Affairs used simulants rather than live chemical or biological agents. In a letter dated Aug. 23, Army Maj. Gen. Joseph M. Cosumano told the Department of Veterans Affairs that both simulants in exercises ``August Gold'' in 1963 and ``Copperhead'' in 1965 ``are considered by the medical community to not pose a health risk to man.'' He also said that all participants were briefed in advance on the details of each exercise The two simulants used were bacillus globigii and zinc cadmimum sulfide, which is a florescent powder. Bacillus globigii is found worldwide in soils and on root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots. Los Alamos National Laboratory said last year when preparing to use bacillus globigii in outdoor tests of detectors for airborne biological agents that the simulant is harmless to humans except the extremely ill. In a reply letter to Cosumano, Thompson thanked the Pentagon for agreeing to search classified and unclassified documents for ship names and logs, crew rosters, test results and medical records that may identify service members who participated in the tests. Thompson said the Pentagon also agreed to provide a list of the chemical, biological and other agents used in the tests and to consider waiving secrecy agreements that test participants may have been required to sign. ``These steps represent a significant improvement in the way in which our government can assist those service members who participated in these tests and who, as a result, may be suffering from medical problems,'' Thompson wrote. New drug and explosives scanners, so sensitive that they can tell if you even touched a dangerous object days ago, may soon be coming to airports. The walk-through scanners are faster, more accurate and less invasive then any technology currently out there. The new scanner in action.RealVideo (download RealPlayer) Little has been accomplished for examining people themselves since metal detectors some 30 years ago, said Ken Wood, president of Barringer Technologies of Warren, N.J., which built the Sentinel device launched this week. The Sentinel will non-invasively detect and identify microscopic amounts of over 30 explosive or narcotic substances, he said. Barringers main competitor, Ion Track Instruments of Wilmington, Mass. is building a similar portal, spokeswoman Joanne Arsenault said. Still formally unnamed, the companys calling it the Entryscan 3 for now. The Sentinel will come onto the market at the end of this year, Wood said. The company didnt give a price for the machine, but systems for checking baggage for explosives cost around $1 million each, according to the FAA. Winds of Change When you step into a Sentinel, which looks like a larger than usual metal detector, a light puff of air ruffles your clothes. That air is sucked into vents in the machine, which separates out heavy molecules like those that make up drugs and explosives. (The active ingredient in marijuana, THC, weighs 87 atomic mass units. Water, a simple molecule, weighs 10.) The process uses a sample-preconcentration technique developed by Sandia National Labs, a Department of Energy installation in Albuquerque, N.M. ITIs Entryscan device relies on body heat, which warms up air near a travelers body and lifts it to the top of the device. The Entryscan collects a smaller amount of air, and doesnt require the Sentinels puff, Arsenault said. Their system was developed with the Gas Dynamics Lab at Pennsylvania State University. You have heat rising off your body all the time, and it tends to carry particles off your body, FAA spokeswoman Becky Trexler, whos familiar with both devices said. On an infrared camera, it looks very karmic. Extremely Sensitive Systems Both the Sentinel and the Entryscan 3 then use ion mobility spectrometry, which relies on analyzing the rate of movement of a particular molecule, to determine exactly what substances the heavy molecules form. If they find something on their list of problem substances, an alarm sounds. If the system finds a suspicious substance, a red light shines and the substance name appears on a video screen. The process takes about seven seconds. The Sentinel also includes a metal detector, so travelers dont have to pass through two checkpoints. The systems are so sensitive, they can detect a few parts per trillion of explosives or drugs, microscopic traces which cling to clothes and skin even when people think theyre clean. If you emptied a packet of sugar into an Olympic-sized swimming pool and then mixed that up, this thing is the equivalent of drawing in that much water and detecting one of those particles of sugar, said Sandia spokesman John German. The systems sensitivity is two-edged they can find explosives previously thought undetectable, but they raise the specter of false positive results. Customs spokesman Bill Anthony told a story about a machine he once tried out that scanned money for traces of drugs, but delivered instead a lesson on how many hands your dollar bills probably pass through in a week. We took some of our commissioners money we got it out of a cash machine it showed traces of drugs. I put my money through. And mine all showed up with drugs, he said. From Bags to People The FAA and Customs already use similar products from Barringer and ITI to scan baggage. Barringer has a wand which security officers wave past a bag, collecting an air sample which gets analyzed for dangerous substances. ITI has an analyzer which uses a cloth wiped over a bag, and they recently debuted a boarding-pass scanner which checks the passes for traces of substances. We have the technology to use on the bags. Were looking at it for scanning passengers, Trexler said. Customs uses dogs to sniff for drugs, but unless theyre Lassie, they cant tell their handlers what drug theyre sniffing. The agency also uses a controversial X-ray system, which has come under fire for essentially making naked pictures of people. It also makes them look kind of fat, Anthony said. An Unusual Fund-Raiser In this political season, President Clintons appearance at a fundraising event, even one for his wife, isnt likely to attract much attention from the press. But a fundraiser the president attended in Philadelphia today was noteworthy in one respect: it took place on federal property. Generally, politicians avoid soliciting funds in federal buildings because of the Pendleton Act, a federal law that restricts fundraising by government officials. In the event at the City Tavern, President Clinton stressed that his wife needs so-called hard money donations of $1000 or $2000 from people that havent yet supported her Senate campaign. If you can help Hillary with some more of these contributions, if you know anybody that hasnt made one, may be willing to make a modest contribution to her campaign, it could make a big difference to her, the president said. Ill be profoundly grateful. A printed handout distributed to reporters by the White House described the brunch as a prospecting event at which guests would be treated to quiche, turkey turnovers and duck sausage. The event is designed to seek out individuals who would be willing to contribute to New York Senate 2000 at a later date, the flyer said. However, White House spokesman Jake Siewert later confirmed that the gathering was actually a fundraiser. About 60 people attended the brunch, giving a total of $50,000 to support Mrs. Clintons race, he said. The first lady was not present. Its a privately owned establishment and its been the site of numerous fundraisers, said Cathie Levine, a spokesperson for the Clinton campaign. According to the National Park Service, the City Tavern is a replica of an 18th-century pub that John Adams once referred to as the most genteel tavern. Today, the tavern offers lunch and dinner from a kitchen run by restauranteur Walter Staib under a contract with the Park Service. The building and land are owned by the federal government and considered part of the Independence National Historical Park. Several park rangers stood guard as the president arrived for the brunch just before noon Sunday. Park Service spokesman Phil Sheridan said the legal question had come up during planning for the brunch, but that government lawyers determined it wasnt a problem. We actually did talk with our attorneys as to whether all that was feasible to do, he said. Sheridan said they concluded that because the Park Service has turned over operation of the tavern to Staibs company, the Pendleton Act doesnt apply. The key was it was a concession, Sheridan said. The actual language of the Pendleton Act, which has been amended several times since its enactment in 1883, bars fundraising in any building occupied in the discharge of official duties. The law received considerable attention after it was revealed that Vice President Al Gore made fundraising calls from his White House office. Gore aides defended his actions by saying that the law was only intended to cover solicitations of government employees by their bosses. They also argued that the type of contributions he was asking for were not covered by federal election law. TV cameras and still photographers usually record the presidents remarks at political fundraisers in restaurants but late last week the White House announced that coverage of the City Tavern event would be limited to a couple of newspaper reporters. An official said that only 30 people were expected to attend the brunch and that Press Secretary Joe Lockhart had decided that camera coverage was not appropriate for an event of that size. No new drilling, no new refineries, no new nuclear power plants. And, a strategic petroleum reserve just in case of something like all-out war. So now, when the focus groups (my guess) say it is really good, does Clinton act? Not in the logical way. No, he wants to release some of the reserves., obviously, to help Gore. Of course, he, with the congress, could temporarily remove the Federal gasoline and petroleum product taxes. Yeah, rieeeght.] President Clinton has decided to tap some of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to drive down decade-high oil prices, ABCNEWS has learned. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson is expected to announce the decision at a news conference in Washington at this afternoon. The 571 million barrels of crude oil that make up the emergency stockpile have become the latest flash point in the presidential race as Al Gore and George W. Bush clash over how to lower heating oil and gas prices. The Democratic candidate had urged President Clinton to tap the reserve. Were just around the corner from cold weather, Gore told voters at a town hall meeting in Pittsburgh today. Home heating oil prices will go higher unless something is done. Gore and Bush Disagree Gore called for the incremental release of 5 million barrel swaps from the nations nearly 600-million-barrel oil reserve. Those barrels would be put on the market in an effort to stabilize prices at a lower level. Bush said the stockpile should only be tapped in a national emergency and accused the vice president who opposed using the reserve last winter of playing politics with the nations energy policy. He has flip-flopped on the issue, Bush told reporters in Sarasota, Fla., this afternoon. The Texas governor described his opponents plan as a short-term fix for someone whose administration has been asleep at the switch. With seven weeks left to go, they all of a sudden get religion and want to tap the reserves to help Al Gores political problems at the polls, added Bushs running mate, Dick Cheney. This is not sound policy. The first and last time the reserve was used was by the Republican nominees father, President George Bush, during the 1991 Gulf War. The younger Bush says the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries several of whose 11 members were participants in that conflict should boost crude oil production. He blames the White House for failing to convince the cartel to do so. Gores advisers say they welcome an election-year fight over the oil issue and believe it will only aid their efforts to frame the election as a choice between working families and wealthy corporations. The vice president has accused American oil companies of price gouging and collusion and continues to accuse Bush and Cheney both of whom headed up oil companies of carrying water for the industry. Its time to stand up to the apologists of big oil, Gore said today. I reject an agenda that is of big oil, by big oil, and for big oil. Gore also continued to hammer Bushs proposal to open up the 19-million-acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil exploration. PROTESTERS will accuse Tony Blair of treason today to highlight the perceived
threat to British sovereignty posed by the forthcoming European Union summit in
Nice.
A "notice of treason" - naming Mr Blair, Robin Cook, the Foreign Secretary,
Jack Straw, the Home Secretary, and Lord Williams of Mostyn, the Attorney-
General - is to be handed in at courts across the country. Campaigners say that
by the end of the week they will have submitted at least 500 notices laying
information under Section One of the Treason Act 1795 and Section 3 of the
Treason Felony Act 1848.
A group calling itself Sanity - Subjects Against the Nice Treaty - says
ministers are preparing to give up national control over justice and home
affairs matters. While the Government is adamant that decisions over foreign
policy, defence, taxation and borders should remain subject to the veto, they
have been more equivocal over these two areas.
In a recent letter to Christopher Gill, Tory MP for Ludlow, Charles Clarke,
Home Office Minister, said: "The Government has not said it will accept
qualified majority voting for justice and home affairs issues. We have said
that we shall judge each case on its merits. Where QMV is in Britain's
interests, we will accept it. Where not, we will not."
This falls short of the unambiguous pledges given by ministers to retain the
veto in other areas. Euro-sceptics believe that a move to majority voting in
justice and home affairs will result in the adoption of a common legal
framework known as corpus juris and the extension of the powers of the EU
police body, Europol.
In his letter, Mr Clarke said that none of the corpus juris recommendations had
been formally proposed and Britain believed that the legal changes they would
involve were outside the competence of the EU.
But a spokesman for Sanity said: "If justice and home affairs pass into the
EU's control, then the EU's corpus juris project will ultimately be adopted by
majority voting. They will abolish the British right to trial by jury and will
make all British subjects and others in the UK subject to arrest and
incarceration by a European public prosecutor and a so-called "judge of
freedoms" with no public hearing nor obligation on the prosecution to exhibit
any evidence for as long as they choose."
He added: "The EU will also acquire the power to decide to expand the strength
and scope of Europol, equip and train it with paramilitary weapons and send it
where it chooses."

HOW MANY AMERICANS living in America read the International Herald Tribune?
My guess is not many and even fewer gun-owning citizens. Yet, on January
26th of this year an article authored by Mark Malloch Brown and Janyantha
Dhanapala was required reading for American gun owners and those who
believe in our national sovereignty. The point of view they expressed will
surely affect Americans' Second Amendment rights in the years to come.
The title of the article was, "Let's Go Out Into the World and Gather Up
Small Arms." The authors are both employees of the United Nations. Mark
Malloch Brown is the administrator of the United Nations Development
Program and Janyantha Dhanapala is the UN undersecretary-general for
disarmament affairs: two influential people prominent in the global gun ban
movement.
The article tells the story of how the UN Department for Disarmament
Affairs visited Gramsh, Albania to "help broker an agreement by which
community services would be delivered in proportion to the volume of arms
and ammunition turned in." In other words until the citizens of Gramsh
turned in their firearms, medical services and other essential services
would be withheld by the great humanitarian organization, the United
Nations.
Brown and Dhanapala call for, among other items, destroying surplus,
confiscated or collected small arms, legislation to monitor, trace, and
police legal arms transfers, and international guidelines for tracing
weapons and ammunition through serial numbers and transit guidelines.
If anyone thinks that Brown and Dhanapala are just whistling in the wind,
they better think again. Next year the UN is convening its first
international conference on the "illicit" trade in small arms and light
weapons - a watershed event. As I mentioned in my last week's article on
FrontPageMagazine.com, ("Global Gun Grab," 9/13/00) the United Nations has
been slowly and steadily working towards this international conference
since 1995.
A very large group of non-governmental organizations (NGO) are supporting
these UN employees and diplomats in their effort to ban guns across the
globe. Most of these organizations have worked in the disarmament movement
for years and learned their political lessons in the successful effort to
get a United Nations treaty that bans land mines. Although the United
States has yet to ratify the land mine treaty, most of the other nations
are signatories.
Most of these NGOs get their funding from organizations, foundations, and
other groups that would be considered politically to the extreme left of
center. They are a cohesive group which has been meeting together regularly
for years and have developed a well-connected and well-funded network,
which tends to meet most often in conjunction with UN workshops on
disarmament and small arms at various venues.
Additionally, there is a US small arms working group (USSAWG), which
includes such anti-firearms notables as Michael Bears of the Coalition to
Stop Gun Violence, Tamar Gabelnick of the left-wing Federation of American
Scientists, and Natalie Goldring or some other designee of the British
American Security Information Council (BASIC). I have copies of notes from
several meetings of the USSAWG detailing the incestuous relationship these
groups have not only with UN personnel, but also with national government
officials across the globe.

the notes a meeting of the USSAWG was held in Canada "with support from the
Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs." A BASIC press briefing held in
Washington featured Joost Hiltermann, an Organization of American States
(OAS) official and the South African Ambassador.
According to meeting notes of a June 1998 meeting of these groups, the UN
Group of Governmental Experts on Small Arms "requested a meeting with a
number of NGOs to discuss the next stage of the process." The meeting was
held at the Quaker United Nations Office and representatives from BASIC,
Federation of American Scientists, and Center for Defense Information

"The whole idea is not to let the criminal element know who's carrying and who's not," one man says. But others were willing to share their stories. WHO'S CARRYING A GUN? The Texas Department of Public Safety, which administers the Concealed Handgun License program, keeps up-to-date statistics on CHL holders in Texas. Here are some highlights: * As of June 8, 212,382 people have active licenses. Since 1996 the state has revoked 1,053 licenses, suspended 373 licenses and denied 3,035 applications. * There are 20,953 license holders in Dallas County, 16,934 in Tarrant County, 5,463 in Collin County and 4,730 in Denton County. The ZIP code 75043, which is in Garland, has the most license holders of any ZIP code in Texas, with 833. ZIP codes near Houston are second and third, followed by 75150 in Mesquite, with 755, and 75052 in Grand Prairie, with 753. * Ages of license holders range from the minimum age of 21 (206 people) to 97 (one person). The most common age is 53 (7,014 people). * Just over four-fifths of all license holders, 171,054, are men. The 41,328 women comprise 19.4 percent of the total. * More than 91 percent of license holders - 194,581 people - are classified as white, a category that also includes Hispanics. Nearly 4.5 percent, or 9,436 people, are black, and 1.3 percent, or 2,833 people, are Asian. The remainder are classified as multiracial, American Indian, Alaskan native, other or unknown. - Michael Precker "The cops can't be everywhere.' About the time that Kim and Ray Clawson inherited a gun collection from her father, they moved to a new house in a Dallas suburb. "I really didn't think it would appeal to me," says Ms. Clawson, 42, a maternity ward nurse at Parkland hospital. "But I figured if we were going to have them in the house, we needed to know how to safeguard them and how to use them." Mr. Clawson, a 45-year-old pilot who flies cargo planes, says there had been a couple of murders in the area, "and that got us thinking about our safety." "The cops can't be everywhere," he says. "It seemed like a natural thing to go out and get concealed handgun permits." So both Clawsons took classes and received licenses. They enjoy shooting at a gun range every few weeks to keep their skills sharp, but don't carry guns that often. "It is nice to know you can have a gun in your car," Mr. Clawson says. "When you're someplace you're not familiar with, it's a little comforting to know it's there. But if you ever pull it out, you could end up in trouble, and we know that." They're also careful at home, where a gun safe is locked and bolted to the floor. "When I come in the house it goes right out of my purse and into the safe," Ms. Clawson says. Not all of her friends understand. "You talk about your hobbies and sometimes guns come up," she says. "And they say, "What do you want to be, Billy the Kid or something?' "I tell them you really ought to try it sometime. It's really kind of fun. It's not my only hobby. I garden, I crochet, I bake cookies. Vice President Al Gore yesterday reversed a stance he took in February and urged President Clinton to tap the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to drive down the price of heating oil and gasoline before winter. "We cannot just wait around. Families need action now," Mr. Gore said, standing in front of storage tanks at Burch Oil Co., a distributor of home heating fuels and motor oils in St. Mary's County. "There are steps that we can take right now before winter sets in to make heating oil affordable and to bring gasoline prices down at the pump." Mr. Gore recommended that Mr. Clinton undertake "several" 5-million-barrel releases from the government's petroleum reserve of 571 million barrels. "Assuming that is successful, we should continue with these swaps in an effort to stabilize the price of oil at lower levels and help consumers," Mr. Gore said. Texas Gov. George W. Bush said that move would be a grave mistake. "That's bad public policy. The strategic reserve should not be used as an attempt to drive down oil prices right before an election," Mr. Bush said in Cleveland yesterday after he toured a manufacturing plant. Mr. Bush said the strategic reserve is intended as an insurance policy meant for a sudden disruption in the nation's energy supply or for war. "It should not be used for short-term political gain at the cost of long-term national security," he said. The White House took a wait-and-see attitude on Mr. Gore's proposal. "We have a number of options before us," White House spokesman Jake Siewert said. "The president has been looking at this for a while," and "he's taking that [Gore proposal] under consideration." But some Cabinet members just like Mr. Gore have strongly opposed the move in the past. Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers wrote in a Sept. 13 memo that it "would be a major and substantial policy mistake" to make sales from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to drive down oil prices. Mr. Summers backtracked yesterday after someone leaked his memo to the Wall Street Journal. "We have always recognized that this would be, and indeed has been, a rapidly evolving situation and we all need to monitor it closely," Mr. Summers told the Associated Press. "There are a number of approaches for the prudent use of SPR that are now on the table, including those the vice president has proposed, which could be appropriate in current circumstances." Gore spokesman Chris Lehane said Mr. Summers wrote the memo in response to a Department of Energy proposal to release 60 million barrels of oil from the reserve. On Wednesday, ABC's "World News Tonight" broadcast footage of Mr. Gore dismissing the idea of tapping the petroleum reserve Feb. 19 during a town-hall meeting in Springfield, Mass. Mr. Gore said oil-producing countries could easily negate such a step. "All they would have to do is to cut back a little bit on the supply and they'd wipe out any impact from releasing oil from the reserve," Mr. Gore said at the time. "Last winter, Al Gore thought tapping the oil reserves was bad policy, but now with the election just 47 days away, he's engineering an election-year ploy," Bush spokesman Dan Bartlett said. "The situations are vastly different," Mr. Lehane countered. "People have to buy home heating oil," now, as prices reach a 10-year peak, he said. "We're on the cusp of a crisis." In July, the Clinton administration established a home-heating oil reserve in the Northeast to stock 2 million barrels of oil. Mr. Gore yesterday called on Congress to authorize a permanent home heating oil reserve in the Northeast. Mr. Gore also proposed a temporary tax credit for wholesale purchases of home heating oil from refiners or heating-oil importers. Mr. Gore said the tax credit of 5 cents per barrel in October, declining to 4 cents a barrel in November and 3 cents a barrel in December would cost $600 million and would increase home heating-oil stocks by 3.6 million barrels. Mr. Bush favors stepping up diplomatic pressure on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to increase oil production in the short term. In the long term, he favors reducing America's dependency on foreign oil by expanding exploration of U.S. oil and gas reserves, including offshore deposits. Mr. Bush, intensifying his criticism of the administration's oil policy, mentions the issue at nearly every event. The Texas governor promises to increase domestic oil production, particularly by allowing oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, which the Clinton administration has forbidden. But some real-world scofflaws get more mileage out of the adage, "If you've got it, flaunt it." Recently, the Austrian owner of Voteauction.com flaunted it. Boasting of the more than 6,000 Americans who have signed up to auction off their presidential votes to the highest bidder -- illegal activity under the laws of every state in the union -- Voteauction is now detailing its plans to begin an outreach campaign. Using its "Voter Empowerment Kits" and "Action Teams," the company claims in a press release that it can reach more potential customers and facilitate voter fraud without the intervention of an online middleman. Such activity leaves Deborah Phillips of the Voting Integrity Project flummoxed. Phillips has been observing the ups and downs of the blatantly felonious site since August, when Wired News first reported on this curious conglomeration of satire, lawlessness and voracious capitalism. "Why isn't the Justice Department getting involved?" she said. "Why hasn't there been any comment from the White House? Why hasn't Congress held any hearings?" One federal election official said that the government's apparent hesitation in taking on Voteauction may be for three reasons: a lack of widespread knowledge about the site; uncertainty over the worth of launching an investigation; and uncertainty over jurisdiction. On the last point, the question over pursuing this peculiar breed of overseas-instigated voter fraud -- whether such work would fall on the plate of the Department of Justice, boards of election (either in cities or at the state level) or state attorneys general offices -- is unclear. "I suspect that if this began to appear to be a problem on a large enough scale, though, you'd see action, and it'd come quickly," the election official said. According to Hans Bernhard, the Austrian businessman who bought Voteauction from James Baumgartner, a New York graduate student who developed the site, American reaction against his investment has already begun. -Caveat Lector- Hello CTRL list members, I recently ran into the following response to an email I wrote back in June after I discovered that the flash sequence on the 1993 Waco FLIR that has been said to be a machinegun shooting people trying to escape from the rear is actually reflections on a highly-reflective surface that flaps in the wind and periodically reflects the sun (flashes) during the time that the wall panel the reflective surface is attached to rests on the ground. Since then I also discovered that the claim on Waco: A New Revelation that the DoJ report says 15 bodies were found shot to death near the rear exit is also false, instead the DoJ report lists 0 bodies near the rear exit, hence that alleged bit of corroborating evidence is just as unreal as the alleged gunmen shooting at the rear exit. IAN: To say flashes seen on FLIR are "solar reflections" is not to say they're reflections of visible sunlight. The sun emits electromagnetic radiation in all wavelengths, not just the visible band. The sun emits much more energy in the 8-12 micron infrared range than the earth emits. The Waco FLIR was sensitive to 8-12 micron energy. Allard claims that the infrared energy radiating from the earth exceeds the IR energy striking the earth from the sun, and therefore the background temperature of ground behind a glass shard would be warmer than a solar reflection on the glass, and thus the reflection would NOT produce a flash on FLIR measuring an increase in 8-12 mic IR energy. What makes his argument persuasive is that it's true but only when we're looking at solar energy striking the earth spread over the earth's surface. However, when looking down a specular solar reflection on a highly reflective (low emissive) surface, we're NOT looking at the earth as Allard's analysis does, we're looking at the hot surface of the sun, and the FLIR reads a temperature close to the surface of the sun, manifesting on any FLIR as a flash, which is exactly what both the VDS FLIR test and a follow-up FLIR test conducted by Davidian's legal team confirmed -- solar reflections DO produce a flash on a 8-12 micron FLIR. The logical and empirical falsification of Allard's no-solar-reflection claim results in the collapse of the primary argument supporting the claim that the flashes are gunshots. When we also consider that the durations of Waco FLIR flashes last many times longer than real gunshot flashes last, and the fact that nothing like people are ever seen near the flashes, and that debris that's apparently reflective is in each flash location, the FLIR-gunshot case rapidly evaporates into nothing but pure misinformation. Gore must live up to his word and show leadership by increasing fuel efficiency, putting resources into expanding alternative energy sources and ending corporate oil subsidies. Lehman Brothers reported recently that profits from the four largest oil companies are expected to more than double to a combined $50 billion this year alone! Just in May, Public Citizen found that Texaco increased its net income by an astounding 473%, in the first quarter of 2000. With such incredible profits, these companies can afford to live without corporate welfare and lower the gas prices. In the last few days, renowned former Energy Department Counter-Intelligence Director Notra Trulock filed two new lawsuits to protect his rights to speak freely about the gross negligence and coverup by the Clinton-Gore Administration over the historic breach of national security at the Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory. Today, Mr. Trulock will enlarge the defamation suit to include Charles B. Washington and Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson, alleging that these individuals have defamed him by claiming that the investigation of Wen Ho Lee was the result of racism. Evidence exists that Mr. Trulock recommended that 12 individuals be investigated for possible breach of national security at the Los Alamos Nuclear Lab. Six were Caucasian and six were Asian-American. This fact has not been reported widely by the media. "Mr. Trulock will not stand by as his good name is dragged through the mud as a scapegoat for the incompetence and coverup of the Clinton-Gore Administration and their friends. To the extent that Wen Ho Lee was mistreated, it was not by Notra Trulock, and now that Mr. Lee has received a light plea agreement, it is all too convenient for the Clinton-Gore Administration to now claim that there has been no breach of national security at the Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory, but that Mr. Lee's prosecution was all the result of a racist witch-hunt. -Caveat Lector- Clintons far from exonerated By CAL THOMAS Los Angeles Times Syndicate http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/editorial/676038 The key phrase in Independent Counsel Robert Ray's conclusion about the myriad accusations of wrongdoing by Bill and Hillary Clinton -- from their years in Arkansas to their years in Washington -- is that "the evidence was insufficient to prove to a jury that they had committed any crime." This is far from exoneration. This is a tribute (depending on the meaning one wishes to give the word) to perhaps the most successful, widespread cover-up in our history. It worked because -- unlike the Watergate cover-up, which fell apart once the conspirators got cold feet and started copping pleas -- not a single Clinton co-conspirator ratted. Unbelievably, Susan McDougal and Webster Hubbell were willing to go to jail for the Clintons, though they received little in return for their misplaced loyalty. Richard Nixon's mistake was that he had some people on his staff who either had a conscience buried beneath their lawbreaking exteriors or were pragmatic enough to throw the president to the legal wolves in hopes of saving their own skin. Clinton made sure he hired people who shared his amorality or destroyed the few who threatened to expose him as a crook and a sexual harasser. Ray noted a number of factors that might have prevented his office from winning a conviction against the Clintons, including the jury pool in Washington, D.C., which would have been composed largely of government workers and minorities, many of whom might be considered predisposed to think well of the Clintons, regardless of facts presented against the couple. It would have been the political version of the O.J. Simpson trial. Not many believe the "real killer" of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman has yet to be identified. Honest Democrats with whom I've spoken don't believe the Clintons are virginal when it comes to lawbreaking. A New York Times editorial properly faulted the Clintons for dragging out the investigation and escalating its cost to the taxpayers: "From the day that questions were first raised about (the Clintons') relationship to Madison Guaranty, an Arkansas savings and loan that went bust at a cost of more than $70 million to the American taxpayers, they and their political confederates in the White House and the executive branch went to puzzling lengths to hobble legitimate investigations. Instead of candidly laying out the facts of the matter, the Clinton apparatus instead stonewalled the investigators and defamed the Clintons' critics. All this gave rise to suspicions that the Clintons had something to hide and prolonged the investigation." The Times is an unindicted co-conspirator in this because it twice endorsed Clinton-Gore when it could have backed President George Bush and Bob Dole, two men with higher principles and integrity. And what's this about "puzzling lengths"? What's puzzling about someone whose moral compass points to his groin and whose oath of office should have been taken on Hustler magazine, not the Bible? The Wall Street Journal, which has performed a public service by making seven years of stories, editorials and columns on this administration's wrongdoing available in several bound volumes, properly characterized the plot of this sordid immorality play: "shady statements, slick lawyering, witness intimidation and rhetorical assaults on public servants." The key players, said the editorial, "either kept quiet or were completely discredited by a brutal White House attack machine." One of many reasons change is needed in Washington is so that all of the evidence shut up inside the "in-Justice Department" that has managed to escape the shredder and the burn bag might see the light of day. Does anyone seriously believe that if Al Gore is elected president, the public will ever learn the whole truth about this administration's political rape of our government? If the courts are unable to serve justice in this case, the court of public opinion should. But it cannot fully do so unless the cover-up is uncovered and the stonewall is torn down. Who Are the G-17?

Recently there's been a lot of interest in the economists in the Yugoslav
group G-17. They wrote the Program adopted by the so- called "democratic"
opposition and its Presidential candidate, Vojislav Kostunica.
The G-17 likes to give the impression it is independent and
Yugoslav-oriented. In fact it is funded mainly through the Washington-based
"Center for International Private Enterprise" (CIPE). CIPE describes itself
as "an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. " But in fact it is "a
core institute" of the National Endowment for Democracy. The National
Endowment for Democracy has nothing to do, as far as we can discern, with
Democracy. Rather, the Endowment was created in 1983 to solve a problem of
Empire.
People knew that the CIA bribed intellectuals and leaders and set up phony
front groups to carry out US policy:
"When these covert activities surfaced (as they inevitably did), the
fallout was devastating." ('Washington Post', Sept. 22, 1991)
So Congress created the National Endowment for Democracy. Allen Weinstein,
who planned the Endowment, said:
"A lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA."
('Washington Post', Sept. 21, 1991)
So the National Endowment (a sort of spinoff from the CIA) controls and
pays for the Center for International Private Enterprise which in turn
funds the G-17. In addition, the leading G-17 economists hold important
positions in the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and have for
many years.
If the "democratic" opposition got in power, the G-17 economists would be
in charge of the Yugoslav economy. This is not a matter of speculation. The
"democratic" opposition program calls for working with the International
Monetary Fund and the Fund does not work on a casual basis. It invariably
insists that its men (who conveniently happen to be the G-17 economists)
run the show. That is not open for negotiation.
Let us take a look at three of the leading G-17 economists. Their record is
most disturbing.
One of the writers of this article, Prof. Chossudovsky, studies the effects
of the economic "medicine" imposed by the International Monetary Fund and
World Bank. The G-17 program contains the same economic measures they
forced on Russia, the Ukraine, Bulgaria and Peru, among many others. The
results: social and economic devastation. But because of the long-term
US/German attack on Yugoslavia, the results in the Yugoslav case would be
much worse.
G-17 economists are fond of phrases like "free markets" and
"privatization," but their International Monetary Fund "reforms" wreck
countries. First, they force governments to do away with any social
protections - subsidized food or rent, free transportation, free medical
care. Out the window. Second, they use economic manipulation and new laws
to force businesses - public and private - into bankruptcy. Then these
businesses are taken over by a small clique of thieves, international
banks, rich speculators and foreign companies. They purchase the businesses
at rock bottom prices. This is called "Privatization through Liquidation."
A case in point is Yugoslavia, 1989.
The elder statesman of the G-17 is Professor Veselin Vukotic. Presently he
is one of the brains behind Montenegrin secessionism. But in 1989 he was
Minister of Privatization under Yugoslav Premier Ante Markovic.
Yugoslavs have bitter memories of 1989-1990. But do they "put a human face"
on the nightmare? Perhaps people think the economic disaster that befell
Yugoslavia that year was the natural result of "market mechanisms" or the
fault of "incompetent government." It wasn't. There was somebody pulling
the strings.
That somebody was Veselin Vukotic.
In 1989-90, Professor Vukotic worked out of governmental

Shouldn't we repeal the gun laws ... if it'll save a single child?
Jessica Lynne Carpenter is 14 years old. She knows how to shoot; her
father taught her. And there were adequate firearms to deal with the crisis
that arose in the Carpenter home in Merced, Calif. -- a San Joaquin Valley
farming community 130 miles southeast of San Francisco -- when 27-year-old
Jonathon David Bruce came calling on Wednesday morning, Aug. 23.
There was just one problem. Under the new "safe storage" laws being
enacted in California and elsewhere, parents can be held criminally liable
unless they lock up their guns when their children are home alone ... so
that's just what law-abiding parents John and Tephanie Carpenter had done.
Some of Jessica's siblings -- Anna, 13; Vanessa, 11; Ashley, 9; and John
William, 7 -- were still in their bedrooms when Bruce broke into the
farmhouse shortly after 9 a.m.
Bruce, who was armed with a pitchfork -- but to whom police remain unable
to attribute any motive -- had apparently cut the phone lines. So when he
forced his way into the house and began stabbing the younger children in
their beds, Jessica's attempts to dial 9-1-1 didn't do much good. Next, the
sensible girl ran for where the family guns were stored. But they were
locked up tight.
"When the 14-year-old girl ran to a nearby house to escape the
pitchfork-wielding man attacking her siblings," writes Kimi Yoshino of the
Fresno Bee, "she didn't ask her neighbor to call 9-1-1. She begged him to
grab his rifle and 'take care of this guy.' "
He didn't. Jessica ended up on the phone.
By the time Merced County sheriff's deputies arrived at the home,
7-year-old John William and 9-year-old Ashley Danielle were dead. Ashley
had apparently hung onto her assailant's leg long enough for her older
sisters to escape. Thirteen-year-old Anna was wounded but survived.
Once the deputies arrived, Bruce rushed them with his bloody pitchfork.
So they shot him dead. They shot him more than a dozen times. With their
guns.
Get it?
The following Friday, the children's great-uncle, the Rev. John Hilton,
told reporters: "If only (Jessica) had a gun available to her, she could
have stopped the whole thing. If she had been properly armed, she could
have stopped him in his tracks." Maybe John William and Ashley would still
be alive, Jessica's uncle said.
"Unfortunately, 17 states now have these so-called safe storage laws,"
replies Yale Law School Senior Research Scholar Dr. John Lott -- author of
the book "More Guns, Less Crime." "The problem is, you see no decrease in
either juvenile accidental gun deaths or suicides when such laws are
enacted, but you do see an increase in crime rates."
Such laws are based on the notion that young children often "find daddy's
gun" and accidentally shoot each other. But in fact only five American
children under the age of 10 died of accidents involving handguns in 1997,
Lott reports. "People get the impression that kids under 10 are killing
each other. In fact this is very rare: three to four per year."
The typical shooter in an accidental child gun death is a male in his
late teens or 20s, who, statistically, is probably a drug addict or an
alcoholic and has already been charged with multiple crimes, Lott reports.
"These are the data that correlate. Are these the kind of people who are
going to obey one more law?"
So why doesn't the national press report what happens when a victim
disarmament ("gun control") law costs the lives of innocent children in a
place like Merced?
"In the school shooting in Pearl, Miss.," Dr. Lott replies, "the
assistant principal had formerly carried a gun to school. When the 1995
("Gun-Free School Zones") law passed, he took to locking his gun in his car
and parking it at least a quarter-mile away from the school, in order to
obey the law. When that shooting incident started he ran to his car,
unlocked it, got his gun, ran back, disarmed the shooter and held him on
the ground for five minutes until the police arrived.
"There were more than 700 newspaper stories catalogued on that incident.
Only 19 mentioned the assistant principal in any way, and only nine
mentioned that he had a gun."
The press covers only the bad side of gun use, and only the potential
benefits of victim disarmament laws -- never their costs. "Basically all
