[cwelug] Meeting Sunday?

2018-02-03 Thread Don Ellis
How about it, Scott, Robert, Tom, Robert, Mike? Any chance to get together
tomorrow?

I have an actual challenge everyone might be interested in, which is
actually Linux related and appropriate for the venue. Questions about
configuring Apache (or other) web server in Synology. There's pretty much
no documentation specific to that vendor anywhere I have found, and what I
have found seems not to work.

What I want to do is configure the server to allow a web browser to see a
file listing, so the user can open a file and view it with the client's
builtin audio or video player. I've set Apache to do this on my Mac Pro 1,1
(MacOS 10.5.8), but I haven't succeeded in duplicating the results on the
Synology with similar settings. I hope there's a detail I'm missing that we
can snoop out and correct.

Meeting or not, any suggestions are welcome.

Re: [cwelug] Meeting Sunday?

2018-01-07 Thread Don Ellis
Ok, I reread the forecast, and it says that the warmer air temperatures
allow rain, but ground temperatures remain cold, so the rain will freeze
when it hits surfaces. Not good driving weather.
In my home town, after they had deadly cold weather last week, (around
30F), temperatures returned to normal (high in upper 60s, low upper 40s).
The idea of rain falling on colder ground is still new to me.

Probably not good to be driving around today.

According to my app's forecast for Scott's area, the temperature shouldn't

However, if Scott's not feeling well, I would accept the proposal to

Mike, thanks for the consideration. I had my shot, which is expected

the tens of thousands. Contrast the number of US deaths due to Ebola.]

 Donald-

Tomorrow, Demand Progress will support the Reset the Net project to take
steps toward blocking illegitimate government surveillance from the web.
Momentum is growing -- just yesterday Google, Mozilla, CloudFlare, and
dozens of other major sites announced they’ll be joining our effort to
secure the web.

And, we've gotten word of an extra exciting announcement coming from Edward
Snowden himself.

More on that soon. Here’s what you can do to help us keep up the momentum
right now:

Everyone -- join this social media Thunderclap today to help tell your
friends and family to secure their part of the web TOMORROW, June 5th:

Click here to join the Thunderclap!
http://act.demandprogress.org/go/1260?t=1akid=2625.1530109.llBx-v

It only takes a second -- you can sign up with your Twitter, Facebook, or
Tumblr to join a huge simultaneous social media post on June 5th and
promote free, open source privacy tools to your friends and family.

Got a website, blog, or tumblr? We’re raising the Internet Defense League’s
“Cat Signal!” Get the code now to run the Reset the Net splash screen or
banner to help make privacy viral on June 5th:

Click here to get the code for your site.
http://act.demandprogress.org/go/1261?t=2akid=2625.1530109.llBx-v

Tomorrow Reset the Net will launch a privacy pack where normal Internet
users will find free, easy to use encryption tools that directly disrupt
dragnet surveillance. There are so many other exciting announcements flying
around right now that it’s hard to keep track of them all -- more on them
tomorrow, in your email and in the news. It's going to be exciting.

More soon.

When you put it like that, no, I don't. And, with my current level of
activity, I don't see a lot of benefit for LinkedIn for myself.

If it is sufficiently isolated from other activities, it might be
safe/trustworthy. However, I don't know how many users will be
sophisticated enough to use it responsibly.

As I read it, Intro gives you a custom email address, and only email
to/from that address goes through their proxy, and everything is encrypted.
And, they've removed all SSLv2. They're trying to respond to BF, as if

Yes, further examination of their structure is warranted. As I don't have

Re: [cwelug] You might want to avoid Linkdin's intro app.

2013-11-03 Thread Don Ellis
They indicate that only email sent via the custom email address created for
Intro goes through LinkedIn.

From their response page:

Update, 10/24/13

*We wanted to provide additional information about how LinkedIn Intro
works, so that we can address some of the questions that have been raised.
There are some points that we want to reinforce in order to make sure
members understand how this product works:*

   1. *You have to opt-in and install Intro before you see LinkedIn
   profiles in any email.*
   2. *Usernames, passwords, OAuth tokens, and email contents are not
permanently stored anywhere inside LinkedIn data centers. Instead, these
   are stored on your iPhone.*
   3. *Once you install Intro, a new Mail account is created on your
   iPhone. Only the email in this new Intro Mail account goes via LinkedIn;
other Mail accounts are not affected in any way.*
   4. *All communication from the Mail app to the LinkedIn Intro servers is
fully encrypted. Likewise, all communication from the LinkedIn Intro
servers to your email provider (e.g. Gmail or Yahoo! Mail) is fully
   encrypted.*
   5. *Your emails are only accessed when the Mail app is retrieving emails
from your email provider. LinkedIn servers automatically look up the From
email address, so that Intro can then be inserted into the email.*
   6.

Re: [cwelug] Sayonara, netbooks: Asus (and the rest) won't make any more in 2013 | Technology | guardian.co.uk

2013-01-07 Thread Don Ellis
If we could get a Newton workalike package for a tablet, it would be a
great replacement for netbooks. Some Newton ads even looked like
netbooks. The killer feature of the Newton was that I could write on
it (handwriting = text) effortlessly, much faster than I could use a
keyboard with one hand, and the storage/search features were awesome.
Making it bigger and adding a keyboard made it as bulky and awkward as
a netbook (but the keyboard could be left behind). Biggest mistake
(other than not knowing how to market it) was to add features that
made it into a PC.

If Newton functionality was an add-on, someone who doesn't know what
it is wouldn't have to pay for those features, and the hardware cost
has already been amortized over all the other buyers. Just adding a
keyboard to a tablet adds most of the netbook functionality. Apps are
available to access a remote (sometimes virtual) PC across the
network, giving much faster CPU and connectivity than a netbook alone
would have.

Netbooks are dead. What killed them? I'd say a combination of their general
 crappiness the iPad.

My ASUS netbook fills my niche: small (10.1), light,
fully-functional, plenty of storage (160+ GB), long battery life (6+
hrs), wifi, cost-effective (~$200). Plus it has replaceable parts:
battery, disk, RAM, keyboard, wifi. That combination of features
makes it ideal for frequent travel.

Given that Netbooks won't be around for much longer, what alternatives
are there for the 11 laptop-like device? Tablet + keyboard?

 Regards,
 - Robert

Re: [cwelug] Which Shell Is Right for You? Shell Comparison

2012-06-10 Thread Don Ellis
I've been using the O'Reilly books Learning the Korn Shell and
Learning the Bash Shell. For years I've been trying to replace them
with another reference, without much luck. I have annotated my
dead-tree copies with the differences between them. Many paragraphs
are identical between the two.

Haven't been using them as much as I did in my first sh-scripting
years, so maybe not searching as vigorously as I might.

Most striking difference between ksh and bash is how/when the ENV
script (kshrc and bashrc) is sourced in, and what script sourcing is
automatic vs explicit. Always confusing when switching between them.

I started with csh for my command shell, but wrote my scripts with sh.
Wish Perl had been more available at the time; the scripts would have
been much easier to write (and read).

all-m...@all-mail-archive.com (check it out, the request is generic, the
site all-mail-archive.com is there, but I don't see any references to it
anywhere, and no about this site links on the site)

Has anyone else heard of this site? Looks like someone's attempt to archive
all postings on discussion groups. Don't know why it would be helpful,
unless a group's server goes away. The google-groups site IMHO would be
unlikely to go away any time soon.

Is there any reason you can think of to allow this site to archive our
postings? (I'm guessing you can come up with plenty of reasons not to)

Looks like it's a way of accumulating [sometimes or mostly] legitimate
communications, and turning it into spam. Even though there's a way to
search the site, and it's probably indexed by the search engines, I'm not
coming up with any practical applications.

foo takes 10 seconds because all the processes are running in

 Hello all,

In the days before ubiquitous wifi cards, I was able to tether a
friend's laptop without a wifi card to my laptop via a crossover

and was NAT'ed to route via the wifi interface.  This allowed my
friend to access the Internet via my laptop.  The setup was something
 like this:

 [friend] --- [me] -))) (((- Internet

where --- represents the Ethernet cable and -))) (((- represents
 the wifi connection.

In fact, I was able to do this for a few friends at the same time if I
brough along a switch/hub and had access to external power.

I would now like to do something similar, but somewhat in reverse:

 [friend] -))) (((- [me] --- Internet

Specifically, my friend's laptop would connect to mine via wifi, and
my laptop would NAT/route traffic via the wired interface out to the
 Internet.

I would imagine that I would somehow need to do the following:
 1) create an ESSID
 2) enable it to be broadcast
 3) enable DHCPd on the wifi interface
 4) enble NAT routing between the wifi and the wired interface.

I'm getting stuck at the first two steps.  This would seem as though I
am turning my laptop into a hotspot.  However, using that search
term hasn't brought me any joy.  Every hit I've found refers to using
a wifi router (e.g. the WRT54G) and then all kinds of fancy
 authentication schemes.

Am still Googling and browsing, but any pointers to the more correct
 search terms would be helpful.

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [cwelug] Can anyone say new form of DRM?

2011-06-04 Thread Don Ellis
In 1974, when I was working at the Rice Media Center (Film School), I
had to develop a method to override this feature. We replaced the
standard image sensor in a Sony video camera with a silicon image
sensor, which was much more sensitive to IR. To prevent excessive
brightness in strange parts of the image when there was reasonable
illumination (it was exceptional in low light conditions), I installed
a filter to remove the IR. Not very expensive, and pretty easy to
find. For low light shooting, we could remove the filter.

The same solution might remove the IR signal proposed in the article.

Re: [cwelug] Ubuntu power menu

2011-05-24 Thread Don Ellis
I also found an answer on superuser.com that shouldn't be too helpful:

You need to add the Indicator Applet Session applet. It's in the Add to
 Panel list.

The Shutdown applet gives you a popup dialog with Shut Down, Restart,
 Suspend and Hibernate options.

The Indicator Applet Session applet gives you the drop-down menu with Log
Out, Suspend, Hibernate, Restart and Shut Down options, as well as Lock
Screen, Guest Session, Switch from... and other fast-user-switching options.

This just lets you take the whole button away, so you also lose Lock
screen Switch user Log out, which would be nice to keep.

 TL;DR

Mr. Laden wants a setup where he has emacs and a browser boot up on
start up.  He finds that Ubuntu is a little too much on his small
laptop (I take this to mean a netbook).
He wants no other software on bootup except a wireless connect.

His request is interesting, but so is the second article and the

The web page brags about ruggedness. Is it moisture resistant? Getting
wet is one of the big problems with cell phones. I noticed a [cheap]

(One of mine was shortened considerably, though after the warranty had
run out. Not wet enough to disqualify, just enough to stop working)

Basically the device works like it should where the customers gets
 unlimited e-mail, unlimited SMS texting,
unlimited Facebook, and unlimited Twitter.  There is also a Weather and
Map app (weather works - map not
so much as it is based on the T-Mobile cell tower -- no GPS.)

The customer has to prepay for one year's worth of service (at a rate of
$15.00 per month.)  I know that Android smart phones
are better but I will not pay the $80.00 - $120.00 per month smart phone
bills that people pay for such a devices (this is a big
time deal breaker -- don't need all the extra features and will not pay
this much.)  Currently my wife pays $35.00 per month for
a regular ATT cell phone (and this is actual monthly cost after all
taxes and fees) and an effective $15.00 for the Peek.

Hope to see you all again soon.

Thanks, Bob...

When I looked at Target a couple of weeks ago, it was down to $150.
Need to compare what other things were included, such as how much
memory is built in, how big a memory card is included, and if it has
any other extras bundled. Regardless, I will have to check what
features yours is showing today (at the place you bought it).

I am very tempted by the idea of not having to worry about immersion,
but also tempted by better optics, longer record time, good optical
zoom range, or easier operation potentially offered by other brands,
such as Sony and Canon.

Why can't I have all those extras in one camera, at the perfect price?

I still haven't told my wife I want a video camera for my son's
wedding coming up in May. Keep it quiet!

others that I didn't post and it did fine. With the salt water I rinsed
it off when I was done to keep the salt from corroding anything. You can
see that the video is a little jittery, but nice and sharp with good
color saturation. I think I paid $129 for it. I'm sure you can find a
better price than what Target is offering.

The web page brags about ruggedness. Is it moisture resistant? Getting
wet is one of the big problems with cell phones. I noticed a [cheap]
Kodak video camera at Target that is immersible to 3 meters. One of
 very few.
(One of mine was shortened considerably, though after the warranty had
run out. Not wet enough to disqualify, just enough to stop working)

Please pardon my missing the last couple of meetings, but I actually did
 get a Peek for
my wife for Christmas and as such am ashamed to show my face.

The only two issues I have with it are:

 1.  Their Customer Service is not good, however
     a.  I knew that going in.
     b.  Although their customer service is worse than ATT, I would
 disagree
with anyone who brags about ATT's customer service as I have
 personally
          experienced it.

 2.  MS Exchange support.  They do support MS Exchange 2003 and 2007 but
 not so much
2009 and my wife's work uses 2009 MS Exchange / Web Outlook.  If we
 could get the device
to work with her work e-mail I would be satisfied with it.

 Robert

So, what was the ultimate problem? I'd like to hear confirmation of
what we nailed, and if there were other issues as well.

As Don mentioned you need to comment out that first line by putting a # in
 front

  mount: can't find /dev/sdc1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

  The results of fdsk -l:

  Disk /dev/sdc: 3933 MB, 3933732864 bytes
  122 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1015 cylinders
  Units = cylinders of 7564 * 512 = 3872768 bytes
  Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
  I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
  Disk identifier: 0x

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

This is most likely where you are experiencing issues.  You have no
partitions on your drive.  Technically, you don't need a partition,
but it is rather unusual not to have one.

Is there any other way to get the external hard drive to
  mount without using fstab?
  Any help will be appreciated.

Yes.  What operating system are you using?  If linux, which distro and
version?   For example, are you using Red Hat 5.1 or Ubuntu 11.04
alpha?  If a desktop version, which desktop environment are you
 running, e.g. KDE, Gnome, xfce?

With recent desktop distributions, one should just be able to plug in
an external drive and an icon appears on the desktop.
