yes, I think that the embedded jpeg might be broken. I have fixed the problem. First, I have upgraded the Nvidia driver to 535, and the issue was still there. Then I tried a very subtle edit in darkroom, such as moving the Exposure slider a tiny bit, or the color correction saturation, and now the image is displayed correctly in Lighttable. When "on import" is flagged, a basic xmp is created. As soon as you edit, that info is passed from the db to the xmp. Try this simple test: * import image filexxx.dng * cat filexxx.dng.xmp * if you haven't changed defaults, will read: xmp:Rating="1" * now change rating to 3 stars. * again, cat filexxx.dng.xmp * now you will read: xmp:Rating="3" Back to my problem, I did this test on a different Ubuntu 22.04 box: * deleted all xmp * imported all images again * check: the new xmp carry the edits So this looks like a possible workaround. I was looking for a way to do it from command line but did not find anything so far. No, it doesn't work like that. Edits are always copied to xmp. That flag is for people who do not want the folder populated with xmp for images they do not edit. I have always worked with "write sidecar on import" flagged, assuming that after that, any edit would be copied to xmp. The scope of that flag is to avoid populating the folder of files if the images are not edited, I think. Is there anything like a darktable user? the files are in my folders, and I am the owner... Guillermo, thanks for replying. Yes that option is flagged, but you see, the problem is at the notebook because the XMP has no trace of my edits. Hello All, I am investigating why XMP files copied on another system do not show the same edits, and I found this. First, one notebook and one workstation, both running Ubuntu 22.04 and DT 4.4.1. On the notebook, I did some preliminary edits, and flagged a file with 3 stars. Filtering for 3 stars show me the file, and all the edits I did. Copy the XMP on the WS, it is only one star, looks like never edited. I go back to the notebook, cat the XMP, and lo and behold! It is almost empty and show rated=1. What's on?! I do agree with Marco. I work on SSD, store on raid, then rsync to another system in the same building, with raid disks, and with another pc on a remote location. Then check what profile you use for darktable export, and using which profile Gimp interprets the exported file. Not sure if it is a color profile problem, given the monochromatic image. The comparison is made on screen, between Darktable and Gimp. In Gimp, the image is a little darker, so shadows' detail is partially lost. I would have expected that the tiff in Gimp was an exact copy of DT. Hello All, I was working [DT v3.4.1, Linux] on a BW image, when finished, I exported to Tiff, leaving Profile/Intent as Image Settings. Later, when I printed the image with Gimp, I noticed that the image on paper was darker and some detail in the shadows was lost. I thought it was a limitation of the printer, but then I compared the Tiff with the image on DT, it was the Tiff that had lost detail in the shadows. Is this something to be expected when exporting? or am I missing something? [darktable-user] lighttable/folder/open takes a long time
Hello All, it's not really an issue, just wondering... I load my RAWs in one folder which has now about 10K images. Each time I add a bunch of 30-50 images, it reads all folder just to add the new ones. Does it has to be so? Marc, thank you very much for your warning! As you see, the first step is done, and I can see a huge improvement in browsing through the lighttable with the GTX 1650. I was wondering too if it is worth to go to 4K, I wouldn't like to go back to square one, performance wise. Maybe 2560x1440 is the wise compromise, and I save a lot of money: I do not really feel constraint at 1920x1200, I was suffering more for the slow paging. The more memory and more parallel processing units (“GPU cores”) a video card has, the more useful it will be for OpenCL processing. The useful minimum these days might be 2GB, but I would look for 4GB and more. “Out of the box” would probably only happen if you buy a computer from a company that sells them configured with Linux. Whether you install AMD or Nvidia GPU, there will be additional steps. In case of AMD, Linux kernel already supports AMD cards with the open source ‘amdgpu’ module, so that part will be “out of the box”. OpenCL support will have to come from either 1) open source ROCm or 2) proprietary AMDGPU-PRO. In case of Nvidia, Linux kernel's ‘nouveau’ module will need to be replaced with the proprietary ‘nv’ one from Nvidia, plus OpenCL part from the same Nvidia. Ubuntu has them in standard repositories. One can also use Nvidia repositories for perhaps slightly newer software. After backup, I upgraded to v3, and all is fine (!) with my Nikon scans collection. However I would like to understand why my test PC, with same Ubuntu 18.04LTS, shows skulls instead of thumbnails. I can open the .dng with image viewer, so no required library should be missing. Tried to remove and re-import, purged non-existing, no success. Why DT3 hiccups with these files ? Yes, I agree. My scope is not a remote backup, but rather a simple way to send an image developed with DT to family's & friends' WhatsApp via Android. I would say rclone is a nice solution. Ok. I found a nice, clean workaround: maybe some Linux user could be interested. https://rclone.org/googlephotos/ Simple command line solution to sync a local folder with Google Photo. You install it (I used the .deb), set it up with the token you receive from Google, and it's done. Basically, in DT I setup an export preset that saves to a specific folder, that I want to be synced with Google. [darktable-user] upgrade from 2.6 to 3, how to?
Hello All, I plan to upgrade from 2.6 to 3 as soon as the new Ubuntu LTS will come out. I have tested v3 on a desktop, and have problems with Nikon LS5000 files, for example. The new layout looks messy, but maybe it's just a matter to reduce font size. Also the feeling and graphics are somewhat different, and it will take some time to burn in. It would be nice to have both installed so if something goes wrong, I can always use the old one. Jack, I don't know if it's the correct/usual work flow, but I never sharpen in DT, because I don't know yet the destination of the image. So I save the image full size without sharpening. If am scaling the image for the web, or using all/some pixels in a large/small print, it will need a different sharpening. [darktable-user] cannot export to Google Photo
Hello All, I am running DT 2.4.4 on Ubuntu 18, and I would like to export on Google Photo. So, this is what I've done so far: -target storage: google+ photos -account: validated (shows "logout" in the following line) -the following line is not clear to me, says Auto Backup / Drop Box / Profile Photos, I let Auto Backup as default -format: JPG, quality 95 -max size 1080x1080 -press EXPORT and see "exporting to" -go to Google Photo, reload page, NOTHING! I tried also Profile Photos, no success. Is there a log file to check what's going on? Hello All, this small camera needs a strong lens correction: while out-of-camera JPGs are fairly correct, the RAW files are appalling. The Lens Correction menu says "lens not found". Thanks Matthieu! I can load the .rwl files, however, most of the times DT crashes when I open Darkroom and try to zoom in. This does not happen with my Pentax DSLR folders. Hello All, I have seen that the support for Leica D-Lux Typ 109 has been added, and is committed for V2.4.0. If it all boils down to editing a file, can I do it myself instead of waiting for V2.4.0? However, I wasn't able to find "adobe_coeff.c" on my system.
