Hi, some years ago I got a small Intuos tablet, it was not as useful as I had hoped with darktable. [darktable-user] Color calibration: white balance disabling not enough
Hi, I am playing with the new version (very nice!), and specifically with the move from whitebalance to color correction: I noted that it is not enough to disable whitebalance module. The color correction module will continue to show an error message (warning triangle) for "previously whitebalanced" images, saying that the white balance module is using the camera reference point. I have not yet found out how to get rid of the warning: Disabling the whitebalance module is not enough. once it helped to also reset the settings of the whitebalance module (and turn it back off again), but with other images I am turning around in circles. Has anyone else seen this? What is the proper workflow to move from whitebalance to color correction? The color correction results look very nice, once I get there... I would generally prefer to install software from official Debian repositories, to keep everything simple. Darktable 3.4 is in the "unstable" repository. IMHO it should be possible to download just this package and install it manually: https://packages.debian.org/sid/darktable Otherwise you can use "apt-pinning" to install the package from the unstable branch on Debian testing, see: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.de.html#_tracking_literal_testing_literal_with_some_packages_from_literal_unstable_literal After adding unstable repositories and "pinning" the system to testing, you can choose to install specific packages in the unstable version. That's what I just did, the new version looks great! Thanks to all involved! Cheers Michael darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
Re: [darktable-user] Graphic card opensource drivers
Hi, to add some confusion: I think the only true open source solution for darktable opencl is Intel right now. Current drivers for Intel offer opencl support, are open source and work with darktable. For example my new ThinkPad L13 has opencl support in darktable without any proprietary drivers. But you should consider that Intel graphics is usually far less powerful than AMD or nvidia. Re: [darktable-user] Printing
Hi, I think the icc profiles could be collected in an online database like dt styles or film development recipes. Probably there will be a need for some quality feedback mechanisms, like user reviews or something, but to my impression there are a quite a number of people out there with profiling hardware that may share their icc profiles. In my view, the issue is hardware support. E. G. Gutenprint supports only one printer in the current xp range of Epson photo printers. That is understandable, but in this instance turboprint has better support. Cheers Michael Am 13. [darktable-user] Printer recommendation / Experience w/ Epson driver and color?
Hi, I am looking at inkjet printers to print photos from darktable on Debian Linux. Any recommendations? The Epson XP-15000 looks good (A3+, networked, ca. 300 € in DE, main drawback probably expensive dye ink, which seems typical for the price range). But it seems to be too fresh for CUPS/Openprinting/Turboprint support. Epson says it is supported on Linux in its "ESC/P-R Driver 2 (generic driver)" and the "Epson printer utility". Any experiences with this generic Epson driver/utility? Are there other solutions? Is there support for color profiles, a) for Epson inks and papers b) for third party papers, e.g. Canson Baryta? I would like to avoid having to buy further hardware for profiling, sending a few prints off for profiling makes probably more sense for a start, if there are no "sensible defaults" available. Hi, the original poster is on Debian testing, that's not supported by AMD. The Debian nVidia packages should work fine. For me, this has been enough to choose nVidia, I'm using Debian testing with a 750Ti, and it just keeps working through a lot of updates. Of course switching to distribution supported by AMD (like Ubuntu 16.04) is also an option. In that case, distribution updates (eg. to Ubuntu 17.04) may be a problem. [darktable-user] Web gallery: Add image titles, metadata?
Hi, yesterday I used the re-worked darktable 2.2 image gallery for the first time, nice! This is what I need to quickly share some event images without uploading them to large commercial sites. But I wondered if it is possible to display titles/descriptions for individual images in the gallery, and other image metadata like exposure. There is a feature request to use variables in the gallery title field (https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/8529) -- IMHO it would be great to be able to use metadata also with regard to single images. [darktable-user] Wishlist: Upscaling via Machine Learning
Hi, last week I took a couple of images at a concert, and it turned out that only a small part of each image was interesting. I was too far away, with a wide-angle lens, so the band I wanted to photograph was in a small part in the center of the frame with lots of other stuff around them, stage, audience etc. Now this can be solved by taking better pictures, coming closer, being prepared with a telephoto lens etc. - but there also seems to be a solution that could find its way into darktable. There have been a number of media reports about machine learning experiments by Google etc. to add missing detail to images during upscaling. It seems like the results are often quite convincing. Now I stumbled upon a Github project for this that seems to offer a hands-on solution which might be a basis for implementation in darktable: https://github.com/lucasdupin/ml-image-scaling What do you think? AW: [darktable-user] Which config for Darktable
Hi, actually, darktable profits much more from OpenCL support than from better CPUs/more cores etc. If at all possible, try to get OpenCL working. This involves cards from NVidia or AMD, and using their closed-source drivers. The NVidia drivers are traditionally better at continuing to support older hardware, while people on the list had AMD drop support for their reasonable middle-aged card. On the other hand, there seem to be more creative ways to get a half-installed AMD driver to work on systems it is not intended for. I'm happy with a NVidia card (750 Ti, 2GB RAM), used with the boring closed-source driver, this makes a huge difference on my aging quadcore. If I get your proposed configuration right, this might mean installing a 4GB gaming graphics card on a headless system -- I think it is worth it. But I wonder if it is possible to get the colors right on a TV, is calibration possible for a TV backend? Re: [darktable-user] How to fix overblown white?
Hey, just a quick note about the basecurve: that curve is very early in the processing stack. So if you blow your highlights in this stage, they are gone, before you can do something about it. If there are exposure problems it is far better to use the contrast curve in the colour tab, because that is applied later. Cheers Michael Am 4. Re: [darktable-user] How to fix overblown white?
Hi, If you want to reduce brightness in the blown highlights without darkening the whole image you should reduce the contrast. I would recommend turning off the base curve, turning on highlight reconstruction, and turning on a low contrast curve. Then, using the clarity preset in the equaliser helps to retain image details in the low contrast setting. Cheers Michael Am 4. I think the ideal workflow would be like this (similar to the commercial colorchecker solutions): I would place my IT8 target in the first shot of a series, and then later in darktable I would mark the edges of the target in the image, and the positioning of the patches would be autodetected (with some perspective correction). Also, I could select the manufaturer measurements delivered with the IT8-target, probably after importing the measurements as some kind of preset stored in darktable. And then darktable would create a color style that I can apply to the other shots in the series with similar lighting. Then, in a second step, I could decide to tweak the colors in some direction, e.g. film-like. Just dreaming... Cheers! To find out what darktable is doing start it from the command line, "darktable -d opencl". And try switching to the nonfree nvidia drivers. As far as I know, OpenCL support in nouveau is not yet there. The feature matrix at https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/ says "compute" is not available for most cards, work in progress for some. The nvidia drivers from nvidia support OpenCL well. On most systems, OpenCL should speed up darktable. If your system has a recent CPU and an old graphics card, things may be different. I had tried google before, but obviously not using the right keywords... As described in the bug report, installing libnvidia-ptxjitcompiler has fixed things for me. Pascal, Istvan: Thanks for your input, too! But I had it running before the upgrade, including the ICD for OpenCL. [darktable-user] OpenCL trouble, NVidia driver 367.44 "could not create context"
Hi, today I did the upgrade to the nvidia driver version 367.44, coming from 361.xx After the upgrade, darktable can't enable OpenCL anymore, it says it "could not create context for device", whatever that means. Any ideas what to do? I am running darktable 2.06 on Debian testing. Re: [darktable-user] 360 degree panoramas
Hi, I've also done panoramas from a monopod, eg from a mountain top. The monopod helps to keep the horizon even, compared to a free hand approach. Of course, a tripod improves quality even further, but it's not a must. Cheers Michael Am 15. September 2016 09:18:59 MESZ, schrieb Tobias Ellinghaus: >Am Mittwoch, 14. Re: [darktable-user] Re: Export to JPG Pics are blurred

I think you have used more sharpening in the RAW edit than in the JPG. If you export the RAW to JPG with the settings in the XMP, the fresh JPG looks similar to your RAW. If you reset the sharpening to default for the RAW in darktable the results look very similar to the JPG you provided. The amount of sharpening done also has an effect on the colors. It is recommended to use a calibrated monitor for colors and lightness. But, as somebody else said, the RAW edit does not contain more details -- the eyes are just not very sharp (the pants seem to be a bit more in focus, maybe the head is blurred by her movement?). Re: [darktable-user] Black & White in the darkroom
Hi, I think the VirtualBox shouldn't make a difference. Screen calibration makes a huge difference, though, and I don't know if VirtualBox can handle that. To move rulers more precisely try right-clicking on them, on the top of the curve that shows you can change them quickly, on the bottom finely. And you can type numbers into that field, if you know you want a +.0.025 change. For a more automatic approach, try the Equalizer and Tonemapping/Global Tonemapping modules. But in general, darktable is not as good as Lightroom in "getting it somehow right automatically", while it allows to fiddle more in detail.
