Bug#323689: Font not included on ming source

2006-01-30 Thread P.
Hi.

I'm making an official Debian package for the panel [1], and I was be
able to compile the ming source using the 'hopefully' future official
Debian package for ming [2] with only one problem: the operator_panel.pl
file uses a 'fonts/Arial.fdb' file that is not present on the current
panel tarball, so I had to download it from [3].

¿Is it possible to add the missing font file on the panel client source
so it can be totally usable after unpacking? this could make a lot
easier to pack the panel for Debian (and maybe for other distros too).

Thanks.

OpenDX text objects.

DXfontutils provides tools for creating LaTeX formatted text objects
within OpenDX allowing the creation of high quality mathematical
captions. DXfontutils has two main aims:
to improve the annotation capabilities in OpenDX, particularly with
 regard to mathematics and foreign languages;
to enable OpenDX to be used as a tool for producing special effects on
fonts and text, for example the extruded 3D mathematical equation shown

Apparently mutt itself is puzzled too :-)

I’m not sure. Workrave works fine here. If you provide some more vital

the matter is. So, what is vital information? I’m not sure, either. At

Bug#350529: Doesn't want to apply against a 2.6.8 kernel

2006-01-30 Thread Joachim Durchholz

Package: kernel-patch-squashfs
Version: 1:2.1r2-0.1
Severity: important
Tags: patch sarge

Additional installed package: kernel-source-2.6.8

With this configuration, kernel-patch-squashfs fails to apply, claiming
no matching kernel version found (quoting from memory, actual wording
is almost certainly different).

Reproduce by:
* Cleanly installing kernel-source-2.6.8
* Installing kernel-patch-squashfs
* Running /usr/src/kernel-patches/all/apply/squashfs
(is this the right way to install a kernel patch at all?
I found no instructions for doing it without kpkg.)

I believe this is because kernel-patch-squashfs is prepared to patch
against kernel 2.6.8.1, but Debian numbers the kernel as 2.6.8 (and has
the 2.6.8.1 patches applied in one of its subreleases - the actual
kernel-source package revision is 2.6.8-16sarge1).

I fixed the problem by:
* editing /usr/src/kernel-patches/all/apply/squashfs,
* looking for the line KVERSIONS=, and
* replacing the mention of 2.6.8.1 with 2.6.8.
The patch then applied with no errors or warnings, and squashfs seems to
work (though I haven't tested extensively).

Of course, one could also set KPATCH_squashfs=2.6.8.1, but that's
something that most people won't know to do.
(I didn't until I re-read the docs when preparing this bug report. Maybe
it would be a good idea to open a bug in whatever package was used to
prepare kernel-patch-squashfs, to request that the error message that
reports the kernel version mismatch should hint at the KPATCH_package
environment variable.)

Regards,
Jo

Bug#350531: grpn: doesn't allow number block to be used on a German keyboard

Hi,

on a German keyboard, the key between 0 and Enter on the number block
is a ,, not a .

grpn insists on a . and is thus inconvenient to use on a German
keyboard.

Please consider accepting both . and , as decimal characaters, or
make this configurable, or query locale settings for the current
decimal character.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#350534: Typo error in debian-reference-en section 3.1.6 GRUB

2006-01-30 Thread David Van Mosselbeen
Package: debian-reference-en

Version: 1.08-3

In the chapter 3.1.6 - There are noted
'pager /usr/share/doc/grub/README.Debian'. But that file i not found it.
Should by 'pager /usr/share/doc/grub/README.Debian.gz'. But in that case
we can not look the content of a binairy file with 'less'. We must use
'zless' (or 'vi'). So it must by
'zless /usr/share/doc/grub/README.Debian.gz'

Bug#346486: Mouse events before card is initalized?

By looking at the backtrace i had an different idea: What if the xserver gets
mouse events before the card is initialized. Everytime i removed the ball
from my trackball before booting i got an correct x startup. So i strongly
suspect that the mouse events handling is enabled to early in the x-server.
I haven't looked at the source to back this up. But my experience backs this
 up.

It's still most likely a video driver issue, in particular if Option
SWcursor has the same effect as not moving the mouse on X server
startup, which seems quite likely given the backtrace. BTW, the actual
full backtrace output would be interesting, in particular with
xserver-xorg-dbg installed.

Ok, to pin-point the problem, you should rebuild both totem and
 liboil0.3 as explained at http://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace
 with debugging symbols.

Please produce a backtrace with the OIL CPUFLAGS David suggested, this
will help pin-point the place of the crash with debugging symbols.

   Thanks,

Subject: gnome-session: Long delay before Log Out dialog appears
Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.12.0-4
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Hi,

Recently, I have encountered an annoying problem when I logout from
Gnome. There is always a long delay before Log Out dialog appears after
I click the LogOut button. But, it seems that it just happens when I
try to log out the first time in each gnome session. That is, this
problem disappears after the first try everytime. I execute the log out
command 'gnome-session-save --kill' and find it does delay for several
minutes. But no errors are reported.

Thank you very much.

Bug#222434: Fix amixer to reject invalid commands

2006-01-30 Thread buechi

Summary: Fix amixer to reject invalid commands

The patch brings amixer to reject invalid commands, for example:
amixer set
Master,0 nocap makes no sense, if there is no capture switch at the Master
Mixer Control. It also handles the invalid command, when more than 1 command is
submited. For example: amixer set Master,0 nocap 50%,50% does nothing.

Additional it rejects commands like amixer -c 1 get Line,0 80%,40% unmute cap
where unnecessary options are submited.

This is by no means a critical bug. There's no way this script can wipe
out your /etc.

 Hi Sebastien,

I think I can answer the following question you raised:

 -- snip --

The weird point is that running sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/gconf2.postrm
purge doesn't display any error, but the same line called by apt raises
 an error ...

 -- snip --

The problem is only triggered when /etc/gconf2/ is empty.

This error message is triggered by rmdir trying to remove /etc.
Normally, rmdir -p --ignore-fail-on-non-empty will try to
remove /etc/gconf/2, then /etc/gconf, then /etc, and will stop with /etc
because it isn't empty.

On your system, the chattr -i prevents the removal of /etc, and rmdir
fails on permission denied instead of directory not empty.

I'd say that, so that rmdir -p --ignore-fail-on-non-empty can work on
such systems, it should be made to check first if the directory is
empty, and then if it has the permissions to remove it. I'm creating a
clone report on coreutils, but maybe it is caused directly by the kernel
or libc - in which case it should still be possible to work around the
issue in coreutils.

Currently, rmdir --ignore-fail-on-non-empty seems to do the following:
  * call rmdir(2)
  * check errno
  * ignore ENOTEMPTY
Maybe it could be modified to do the following:
  * check if the directory is empty
  * call rmdir(2)
I don't know whether this would be acceptable. Depending on the
coreutils maintainers' advice and decision, I will modify - or not - the
gconf2 scripts.

Regards,

* Sven Hartge:

According to my tests, it doesn't. After some discussion with the GNU
TLS developers, I think it does the right thing and reads from
 /dev/urandom only.

 Are you sure?

Pretty much. Exim does not read from /dev/random according to strace.

When the exim on my server blocked due to lack of entropy, I had about 100
processes trying to access /dev/random (at least lsof said so).

Which version of Exim 4, GNU TLS and libgcrypt is this?

I'd really like to see an strace, too.

lsof said otherwise. Besides, if it read its seed from urandom, then it

Both exim-4.50 from Sarge and exim-4.50-2bpo1 from Backports.org.
libgcrypt is the one from Sarge (including all security updates of

When you get the first screen of the installer (language question), switch

One problem with this solution is that it only works for the installation

It's dificult to do with debian installer as libata is loaded BEFORE any
 user
interaction, and no rmmod is present to remove and reload the modules.

Well I've managed to boot with netinst daily-build (2006-01-16), and CDROM was
detected. This is a micro-HowTo:

1 - boot:

expert BOOT_DEBUG=3

2 - In the shell:

nano /etc/modprobe.conf

add the line:

options libata atapi_enabled=1

save quit

exit from the shell

3 - Continue the installation. After choosing your language and keyboard you
can go to the shell (Alt+F2) and verify that you CDROM is there:

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

4 - After installs completes don't forget to configure your mkinitrd tool in
order to pass 'atapi_enabled=1' to libata, and dpkg-reconfigure
linux-image-2.6.15-1-686.

Note: If for mkinitramfs you should add 'libata atapi_enabled=1' to

It looks like ftheader.h is found in libfreetype6-dev.

The problem is not a missing build dependency -- libfreetype6-dev gets
pulled in by libpango1.0-dev -- but a missing `-I/usr/include/freetype2'
flag. `pkg-config --cflags pangoft2' outputs it correctly, but configure
checks for it only if gtk-cairo is enabled, even though pangoft2 is used
in other parts of the code:

configure.ac:325: if test x${enable_gtk_cairo} = xyes
configure.ac:326: then
configure.ac:327:PKG_CHECK_MODULES(CAIRO, cairo)
configure.ac:328:PKG_CHECK_MODULES(PANGOFT2, pangoft2)
configure.ac:329: fi

This can be fixed by simply moving `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(PANGOFT2, pangoft2)'
out of the if statement, as upstream did in 1.13; diff attached.

If this is intentional, and all packages need to specify a classpath or
bootclasspath explicitly, let me know so I can file bug reports against the
affected packages.

No, its not intentional and no package needs to specify anything unless I have
filed a bug report against them.

The problem is that kaffe now uses ecj-bootstrap as its compiler. Using kaffe
via ant directly uses a programming interface and compiles against kaffes
runtime classes. Compiling with the javac command is (currently) a link to
/usr/bin/ecj.

The problem is that ecj-bootstrap is the source of the failure. It somehow
needs some setup from java-gcj-compat to fullfill its job. You can easily
verify this by installing java-gcj-compat and compiling a simple
HelloWorld.java with /usr/bin/ecj-bootstrap which will work. Removing
java-gcj-compat and it will fail. However, where the problem is is still
to be investigated.

The other (upcoming) fix will be that kaffe uses its own wrapper script
against ecj-bootstrap to compile against its runtime classes. This will be
added in the next uploads and fixes the problems regardless of ecj-bootstrap.

I will therefore clone this bug report and reassign to ecj-bootstrap.
I will let it open against kaffe until the new wrapper script is added.

Wolfgang

Is there a special policy to configure a program linked with python

maybe a /usr/lib/pkgconfig/python.pc - /usr/lib/pkgconfig/python2.3.pc

Pretty much. Exim does not read from /dev/random according to strace.

lsof said otherwise. Besides, if it read its seed from urandom, then it

Okay, sarge indeed uses /dev/random:

9576 access(/dev/urandom, R_OK) = 0
9576 open(/dev/random, O_RDONLY) = 8

I'm going to do a bit of source code archeology to find out why.

There is no indication in the source directory of
the correct Debian installation procedure,
nor any pointer about where to look.

It's written in the package description. Moreover if you found that the
package install a file in /usr/src, you probably also have seen the
documentation files.

I saw them after a while, when it became obvious that something
had gone wrong. But, I hadn't at the time I followed the
documentation in /usr/src and ran make install.

I would suggest adding
an INSTALL.Debian file to the source directory
that refers to the /usr/share/doc documentation
as a minimum.

I may do that, however I can't upload rt2500 packages for a while as
there is already a new version in the NEW queue.

That would be good; it'd save many of your users a bit of grief.

This is certainly caused by an application that doesn't answer to the
session manager. Which processes are you running at that time?

Bug#350089: xemacs21: Problem with savehist/exit.

2006-01-30 Thread OHURA Makoto
  Hi.

From: Alexander Buerger [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Bug#350089: xemacs21: Problem with savehist/exit.
Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 10:18:14 +0100
In the latest version of xemacs21, with savehist loaded, it is no longer
possible to leave xemacs: C-x C-c only says
No such coding system: iso-2022-8
but does not exit, neither does closing the window work. The only way
to leave xemacs is backgrounding + kill.

The problem does not appear when the line
   '(savehist-mode t nil (savehist))
(which was written there via customize) is commented out in custom.el.

What flavor of xemacs21 do you use? -mule or -nomule? Please
send me the output of the following command;

$ /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display xemacs21

Probably you are using xemacs21-nomule. If so, use mule
version.

P.S. I'm planning to remove -nomule flavor from Debian archive,
but not yet. So, you'd better use -mule instead of -nomule.

Bug#348336: improve section on shared config files

You are implicitly saying that there are packages that need to modify
 /etc/profile.

The reason that /etc/profile is in base-files AFAICT is because it's shared
between all bourne-compatible shells. The above claims that /etc/profile is
an example of a shared configuration file. How is this inaccurate?

The actual shell packages don't do anything with /etc/profile at the moment,
so don't need a mechanism to adapt it.
On the other hand there's currently at least 5 packages[1] that have a blurb
in their README saying something to the effect of add this bit
to /etc/profile for the package to do everything it promises to.
No surprise to me that all of those happen to fit the single extra use case
that this proposal documents.

- So yes, there's a _demonstrated_ need for configuration packages to be
   able to modify /etc/profile

The way I read policy 9.9, packages should not need to modify /etc/profile
 to be useful.

Policy 9.9. talks about programs depending on environment variables to
work and explicitly forbids (with a must clause) using /etc/profile to set
up those environment variables.

None of which has anything to do with the use case of configuration
packages, which most empatically do _not_ modify anything _needed_ by a
program to work.
Programs will work just fine without the more specific configuration
provided by the configuration package, they just won't be set up to address
the needs of the more narrowly defined target that the configuration
package is aimed at.

Therefore I object to this proposal in its current form.

Note that this proposal does not open op /etc/profile (or any other
configuration file) for random use by any package, especially use cases
that are explicitly forbidden by policy, it merely opens it up for
configuration packages as used by CDD's.

[1] desktop-profiles, user-de, user-es, user-euro-es, and sysprofile are
the ones I know of

Bug#350555: a2ps: Tries unhelpfully to detect 'tar' in file name

2006-01-30 Thread Sebastien Desreux
Package: a2ps
Version: 1:4.13b.dfsg.1-0.1
Severity: normal

Hello,

'a2ps' refuses to have anything to do with a file whose name contains
the substring 'tar'. I'm guessing it was done to prevent people
from trying to print tarballs, but the code is probably botched.

Here is an example:

~/tmpls -la
total 12
drwxr-xr-x2 seb seb 4096 2006-01-30 11:05 .
drwxr-xr-x 109 seb seb 8192 2006-01-30 11:05 ..

~/tmpecho hello hey

~/tmpa2ps hey
[hey (plain): 1 page on 1 sheet]
request id is HP4050-546 (1 file(s))
[Total: 1 page on 1 sheet] sent to the default printer

~/tmpecho hello tariffs

~/tmpa2ps tariffs
[tariffs (binary): ignored]
[No output produced]

~/tmpls -la
total 20
drwxr-xr-x2 seb seb 4096 2006-01-30 11:07 .
drwxr-xr-x 109 seb seb 8192 2006-01-30 11:05 ..
-rw-r--r--1 seb seb6 2006-01-30 11:07 hey
-rw-r--r--1 seb seb6 2006-01-30 11:07 tariffs

'a2ps' refused to print the file 'tariffs' not because of its
contents, but because of its name. When it is changed to 'traiffs' for
instance, everything goes back to normal:

~/tmpmv tariffs traiffs

~/tmpa2ps traiffs
[traiffs (plain): 1 page on 1 sheet]
request id is HP4050-547 (1 file(s))
[Total: 1 page on 1 sheet] sent to the default printer

Should be easy to fix :-)

Thanks !
Seb.

Well, not now that the installed version is 2.4.2
I can't install the 2.2.0-3 version then test the transition again.
Someone with sarge installed could test but I can't

Sarge has 2.2.0, too. I suspect you triend under testing during

Having pondered about this and looked at the code in mindi, I have come

..mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'

mindi creates floppy image files and mounts them as vfat. For that, vfat
has to be available in the kernel either as a module or compiled in.
What kernel are you using? Can you verify for me that it has vfat?

ok - another reason - i want help but i don't want to publish my

Well, that's certainly nice and appreciated but the Debian bug tracking

that for bug reports? (I'll not cc the bug for now because I respect

Bug#350556: pam_krb5: verify_krb_v5_tgt(): krb5_kt_read_service_key(): Key table entry not found

2006-01-30 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Package: libpam-krb5
Version: 1.2.0-2
Severity: normal

This is more of a documentation problem. I'm using pam_krb5 to authenticate
against a Windows 2000 DC.

# kinit -V hildeb
Password for [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
Authenticated to Kerberos v5

works OK from that machine. But when I try to use pam_krb5, I get this in my
log:

Jan 25 15:16:43 vpn-gw-int openvpn[1835]: (pam_krb5): none:
pam_sm_authenticate: entry
Jan 25 15:16:43 vpn-gw-int openvpn[1835]: pam_krb5: verify_krb_v5_tgt():

Jan 25 15:16:43 vpn-gw-int openvpn[1835]: (pam_krb5): hildeb:
pam_sm_authenticate: exit (success)
Jan 25 15:16:43 vpn-gw-int openvpn[1835]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_acct_mgmt:
entry

According to the docs:
krb5_kt_read_service_key() reads the key identified by (principal, vno,
enctype) from the keytab in keyprocarg (the default if == NULL) into
*key. Returns 0 or an error.

But even using the debug option doesn't tell me WHICH service is searched for.
I'm trying to use pam_krb5 for openvpn authentication:

 snip
# PAM configuration for OpenVPN

authsufficient pam_krb5.so debug ignore_root
account requiredpam_krb5.so debug ignore_root
 snip

The code snippet even SAYS:
 /*
  * Do we have service/host keys?
  * (use default/configured keytab, kvno IGNORE_VNO to get the
  * first match, and ignore enctype.)
  */
if ((retval = krb5_kt_read_service_key(context, NULL, princ, 0,0, keyblock))
!= 0)

Do we have service/host keys? and ALAS, I don't have them, since FOR GODS
SAKE I don't know which service is being expected here.
It's not documented either...

Bug#108587: dpkg vanishing conffiles - more complex/complete specification

2006-01-30 Thread Ian Jackson
Frank Lichtenheld writes (Re: Bug#108587: dpkg vanishing conffiles - more
complex/complete specification):
Do you had any more conversation with Scott about this bug and the patch
or does this mail mark the latest status of it?
Just checking before investigating it for inclusion.

Right. We have included the patch in Ubuntu and it is an
improvement. There is one new bug introduced; we don't have a writeup
of it but Scott just described it to me approximately like this: when
A Replaces B and both have a copy of the conffile it is sometimes
possible for B's conffile to be on disk when both A and B are
installed (presumably, when B was installed last).

We would like to fix this bug of course but we haven't got around to
it yet. So I would suggest that you include the patch in Debian and
we'll improve matters further when someone has the time and
inclination ...

Thanks,
Ian.

Hi Jan

Are you using Debian? If so what version?

Are you writing to me because you are using the packages from here:
http://www.desknow.com/desknow/directfiles/aleidenfrost/mr-debs-unofficial/index.html?

If so, you would be running sid and I'd like you to install the latest
official debs which should have the same version numbers and as the
packages available from the above location. Once you've done this (or if
you are just running the standard packages from sarge) I'd like you to
file a proper bug report in the Debian Bug Tracking System, preferably
using the reportbug tool. (reportbug includes some more useful
information in the bug report, amongst other things that would be the
logs.)

If you are not a Debian user, I'd urge you to send this to the mondo
mailing list rather than to me personally.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what you mean by
'sw' (software???). As to why the image couldn't be unmounted, well,
there could be numerous reasons. To try and find out, you could run
mount to verify that /tmp/27874.3236.img (or whatever it will become in
another run) is in fact mounted. You could then try to unmount it
manually. If that fails you could run lsof to see what files if any are
open. (Obviously, if you had had a peek and cd'ed into the image file at
runtime that would keep it form getting unmounted...)

Cheers
Andree

Standard situation and You are trying to login with user listed in

 successful.

And the most weired case. Different name but /etc/ftpusers exist and user is
 listed there.
But there is no words abut it in /etc/pam.d/profptd

In all cases proftpd.conf is exacly the same. No changes.

Would you please see if

http://bugs.proftpd.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2729

applies in this case? I suspect this bug is also present in my 1.2.10

You should use both AuthPAMAuthoritative yes AND AuthOrder mod_auth_pam.c*

2006-01-30 Thread Andree Leidenfrost
Hi Jan

As I wrote in my previous message it would be great if you could try
again with the latest version and see whether the problem persists.

Also, I've had an other look at the mondo-archive.log file and noticed
that it says pretty much at the very end:

running: umount /mnt/cdrom /tmp/mondo-run-prog-thing.tmp
2 /tmp/mondo-run-prog-thing.err
start of
output-
umount: /mnt/cdrom: not mounted
end of
output--

Sometimes mondoarchive used to act a bit funny when a CD was actually in
the drive and/or mount while it was running. I believe this is fixed
now, so it would be great if you could retest.

Of course, you may feel this is obsolete because too much time has
passed (I wouldn't blame you), so I'll tag this to 'moreinfo' and will
close after the appropriate time has passed without response from you.
(Please do not take offence by this but rather keep reporting bugs as
you did - I'll do my best to attend to them as quickly as I can.)

Regards
Andree

Agreed, I don't think it's useful to our users, and generally just
causes more confusion. I'm removing it from the next release.

I'm sorry to cause this confusion ! I did check that it was shipped
but not that it was actually used.

Bug#350559: aptitude: Typo in Swedish translation

2006-01-30 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.1-1
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n

This is nit-picking, but I can't help myself.

The description of base in the tree is Debian's bassystem, which is
an anglicism - there should be no apostrophe.

While we're at it, a sentence in the Help/About dialog is very
awkward: aptitude kommer med ABSOLUT INGEN GARANTI; [...]. I would
suggest Med aptitude följer ABSOLUT INGEN GARANTI; [...], or almost
any other way to phrase it.

Thanks for an otherwise good translation!

Package: ksysguard
Version: 4:3.5.1-1
Severity: normal

Hi!

ksysguard ignores/reverts changing the order of sensors in the
Signal Plotter Settings dialog.

Steps to reproduce:

* Start ksysguard
* right click on one of the displays with multiple sensors (e.g.
  Physical Memory)
* choose Properties
* switch to the Sensors tab
* Note down the list of current sensors (eg Cached Memory, Buffered
  Memory, Application Memory)
* Change the order by selecting one of the items and using the Move
  Up/Move Down buttons
* Note down the list of changed sensors (eg Buffered Memory, Cached
  Memory, Application Memory)
* Apply the changes by pressing the OK button.
* Reenter the Signal Plotter Settings dialog and recheck the order of
  sensors

On my installation (current sid), the order is not chaned from the
original one.

No, it should only replace it unless there is a reason that the new

I wasn't sure of that, despite having researched the policy, the developer

Bug#350543: more on failing archs

2006-01-30 Thread Roberto Pariset
Hello,
it fails on all the others but i386 (that built it) and hppa (which still
has to build). It's strange because :
1) libclutils0-dev and libclutils0c2 are installed properly and
2) on amd64 the binaries are in the exact same location as the ones on
i386, do exist, and so on.
I really don't see why it fails. Plus, it can build the package on my
(amd64) box:

Bug#350567: initng: Initng tries to use /usr before it gets mounted, thus failing to boot

2006-01-30 Thread Helge Hafting
Package: initng
Version: 0.5.2-1
Severity: critical
Tags: experimental
Justification: breaks the whole system

While running 'filldev', initng tries to use /usr/bin/find and
/usr/bin/expr. Unfortunately, /usr is not yet mounted so these
commands fail. Then 'filldev' fail, and initng eventually gives up
and offer a root login instead.

Critical severity, as the machine does not come up this way.

I have also reported this at http://forum.initng.thinktux.net

Ideas for fixes:
1. Mount /usr before trying to use it
2. Do without find and expr if possible
3. Move necessary sw into /bin, but this affects other packages
   and might not be popular.

And could we please now look at this as a non-urgent matter?

I still suspect that your proposed fix, Sven, can hurt in cases other
than the specific one you know and care about.

I am fine with the fix (and embarrassed that I didn't find time to do
it myself for so long). Thanks alot with your help here!

Bug#348336: improve section on shared config files

You are implicitly saying that there are packages that need to modify
  /etc/profile.

The reason that /etc/profile is in base-files AFAICT is because it's shared
between all bourne-compatible shells. The above claims that /etc/profile is
an example of a shared configuration file. How is this inaccurate?

No, the above claims more than you say it claims. You are putting /etc/profile
as an example of a) file which is shared as a configuration file and
b) file which two or more packages need to be able to modify.

I object to b) being in policy. The file /etc/profile is not a file
which two or more packages need to be able to modify.

 [...]

Not at all. Just because some packages do something does not mean they
need to do it, or that they need to do something the way they do it.

For example, let't take the user-es package, which you always mention
as an example of package that needs profile.d. What does such package do?

It has a README saying the user to add this line to /etc/profile:

if [ -f /etc/language-es ]; then source /etc/language-es; fi

The file /etc/language-es sets lot of environment variables. However,
/etc/profile is the wrong place to do that, as it does not work in every shell.
The file /etc/environment would be much more appropriate.

So, just because some packages tell the user modify /etc/profile does
not mean they need to modify /etc/profile.

Bug#350563: random dir not working properly

if i click on take me to a random directory, it works fine. if
i click on the link again from within the random directory, i am
 thrown into the same directory.

i assume that the feature just goes down in the hierarchy. i think
it would make sense to make it apply to the entire site maybe? or
have a second feature for the entire site?

Yes, that's actually a feature :)
I guess an immediate fix is to change the text to Take me to a random
subdirectory, and fix the documentation.

There are reasons for it to work on subdirs (eg, you sort your music
by genre or artists folders, and want to go to a random one within
a given genre or artist).

Your idea of a site wide random directory could be interesting, but
probably non-trivial to implement (eg: how do you tell which directory
in the current web path is the root directory handled by musicindex?).
We'll add that to the todolist :)
