Costello [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Jezz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [PATCH] Add multibyte support Jezz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I hope this patch could be added to par debian package. If it works and has no effect on the observable behavior for ASCII input, then I have no objection, just a reminder: You need to change the version numbers in the code and documentation (preferably to something containing at least one letter), and add an entry to the releasenotes file. As for incorporating the patch upstream, I think I first want to fix a minor problem with 8-bit support. (Par 1.51 and earlier was written for 7-bit ASCII. Par 1.52 claimed to add support for 8-bit charsets, but didn't get it completely right.) Also, when I add multibyte support, I might want to add awareness of double-width characters at the same time (here I mean the width on the display, not in memory). Bug#374838: 'man cpulimit' should specify whether or not subcommands can have arguments.
On Wed, 21 Jun 2006 19:30:55 +0200 gregor herrmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Wed, 21 Jun 2006 10:43:52 -0400, A. Costa wrote: Thanks for your bugreport! You're very welcome, thanks for the bug! Joking... that should be: thanks for the '.deb' package! Suppose the user wants to put the brakes on the command 'foo --cpuhog'. Can 'cpulimit' do that? Good question ;-) It's clear from 'man cpulimit' that this is OK: % cpulimit foo 50 No, that does not work. The syntax is: $ cpulimit TARGET [OPTIONS...] with TARGET in (one of) -p, -e, or -P, and OPTIONS in -l (mandatory) and some other. Egad, you're completely right, and I'm trying to figure out how I got the idea that 'cpulimit' doubled as a command launcher. Just reread the man page, the package description, the whatis line, guess I thought 'process' meant program. But now I know what it really means so it looks normal, and my first reading seems stupid. Maybe because I'm too used to 'trickle', which is an online bandwidth limiter, which works as a launcher: trickle -2 apt-get install some.ten.meg.package ...that runs 'apt-get' and cuts it down to around 2K/second for the resulting monster download, so you can still browse the web in the foreground. On a dialup that sort of thing helps. { useful examples deleted } Conclusion: * Bad news: centericq --no-xtitles cannot be limited * Good news: the process _is_ limited by giving only the executable's name, or the full path, or the PID. * In fact that's how the man page describes the behaviour. Thanks for the tips, the scales have fallen from my eyes, it all makes sense; not a command launcher, but an limiter for already running processes. Also, this program is quite useful. For example, good old 'trickle' is a slow pig on dialup! 'cpulimit' slows it down much better than renicing, and yet 'trickle' still works fine. So I don't think the man page needs any changes but if you have a suggestion I'll consider it of course. (Maybe adding (without any argument) to the -e and -P options might be helpful indeed.) So now I know my reading was in error, but I have a feeling that it might well be an error that other erring readers also might be prone to making. Therefore an example in the man page seems like a good way to prevent this. While the examples you gave helped me, they could be improved by showing start to finish something a user can do. For that, we need a standard Debian program that's able to become a CPU hog -- having to install some arbitrary bandwidth eater just to run a demo would be a hassle. Hmmm. 'gzip' is required. Become 'root'. Run this sure-fire CPU waster: gzip -9 /dev/zero /dev/null Observe the CPUs go up in gkrellm or something like it... ...it'd be nice if there was a good command line method of showing how much CPU the command is eating. 'ps' works at first: ps -C gzip o cmd,%cpu, pid,ni CMD %CPU PID NI gzip -9 89.5 24953 0 ...but then when you run 'cpulimit' the above 'ps' line doesn't show the same results that 'grellm', 'top', et al do: % cpulimit -p 24953 -l 10 % ps -C gzip o cmd,%cpu, pid,ni CMD %CPU PID NI gzip -9 71.7 24953 0 So to make the above example better, what's needed is a basic command line function that shows the true average speed of 'gzip'. Where does 'top' get its CPU% from, somewhere in '/proc' maybe? Help. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If i forget to /etc/init.d/slapd stop before trying this then slapd -d from the command line fails as you would expect. Then when I try and stop the daemon with /etc/init.d/slapd stop it looks ok, but the daemon is left running, and must be killed, which is not so good. To reproduce /etc/init.d/slapd start slapd -d 1 (fails) /etc/init.d/slapd stop (nothing seems amiss) slapd -d 1 (fails again) /etc/init.d/slapd stop .. .. .. Doesn't stop the daemon. Thanks, James I can't reproduce it here, just tried your flow to reproduce but that didn't work: /etc/init.d/slapd start (works) slapd -d 1 (fails, because port is in use) /etc/init.d/slapd stop (works, check pstree -u if slapd is running) slapd -d 1 (works, because slapd is stopped) /etc/init.d/slapd stop (works also, the 'slapd -d 1' is killed) If you want to run a second instance of slapd, you can better try to create another configuration file and set it up so that it doesn't interfere with the other one. Bug#375059: packagesearch: Files list shows only some files for uninstalled package
Hello, thanks for the report. I believe this to be a bug in apt-file, and have contacted its maintainer to verify this. Internally I do an apt-file -F list packagename, which gives the result you see in packagesearch. Best regards Benjamin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I'll try again: It is possible to ask upstream to add a button on the task bar to *replicate* the file-print marked pages functionality (in the same way it is replicated for file-print document) OR to make the print button on the taskbar configurable (so the user can choose to either print the entire document or only the selected pages) ? Bug#375061: interrupting unison leaves process on remote machine
Hello, martin f krafft writes: also sprach Sylvain Le Gall [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006.06.23.0813 +0200]: I was thinking that the remote process will finish dying by itself !!! (SIGPIPE or something similar). It does not, at least not here. It will continue scanning the filesystem and die some time later. What about creating a sort of heartbeat to check that remote and local process are still alive ? (IE you send at regular interval a packet of data, if one of the process is dead, it cause a SIGPIPE). Well, I'd say it should be fine to send a signal when one process receives a TERM/INT/whatever signal. This should be enough for the other side. Humm, i don't think it is possible to send a signal on every possible case when unison died... It is better that each living unison check that the other unison is still alive... For example, i don't think it is possible to do anything after : - having received a sig KILL or SEGV, - a computer powerdown ;-) ps: could you give me more detailed hint on how to reproduce it (if there is more detail to have) You do need to wait until it's waiting for changes from the other server. I just fire up a unison process and kill it. The two machines are piper [local] and lapse: piper:~ screen -d -m unison piper-lapse ; sleep 5 ; killall -INT unison ; \ ps u -C unison; ssh lapse ps u -C unison USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND madduck 21432 67.0 1.8 41644 35588 pts/15 Rs+ 10:53 0:00 unison -server It's definitely not easy to reproduce, but quite possible. But it seems to only happen when we're waiting for changes from server, and unison *does* die on the remote side when it's done chugging. It would be polite to let it know that it can stop molesting the disk Humm, OK. I see the case you are describing. Well, i am not sure upstream unison author will accept this, because it doesn't involve real data corruption or something like that... I will try to contact them to have this done, but it is not sure, they will ever try to solve this bug. Bug#369304: Quik uses OF input-device/output-device as console; on oldword this results in no visible outpu
Hi Daniel, Sorry for the late reply but anyway :) On Sun, May 28, 2006 at 07:07:12PM -0400, Daniel Dickinson wrote: Package: quik Version: 2.1-8 Severity: important quik uses the input-device and output-device of openfirmware as the console. Unfortunately many old world macs default to a serial console for openfirmware thus the user never sees the quik boot screen, and can't select what image to boot (or MacOS using image=$bye). The kernel is afflicted with the same problem until the virtual terminals are activated, thus no boot messages are available to the typical oldworld mac user. I know. I think the best solution is to have the installer modify the input-device and output-device variables to point to keyboard/screen. There are a few cases in which you still want serial console. Some models (eg 7200, I'm not sure if there are others) don't have OF support for the onboard framebuffer. Serial console is your only option then. The ANS (Apple Network Server) is likely to be run headless, so serial OF console may be the right thing to do there. I think the installer should propose a default I/O choice to the user based on the model and then modify the OF vars based on the users choice. Opinions welcome :) L L p2. -- Goa is a state of mind -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#375097: debconf switched from HOST to URI making new libnss-ldap unable to bind to the ldap server
Package: libnss-ldap Version: 251-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable in previous versions, libnss-ldap asked for an host that was the ldap server. I gave (like you can see in that body) and IP for it. sadly, now you use the shared/ldapns/ldap-server for the *uri* libnss-ldap.conf setting, and an IP is not a valid url. it has to be ldap://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/ instead. quoting the uri setting and reinstating the host one, made it work again. Bug#360123: nfs-common: NFS filesystems not mounted on boot
I have this problem too, on a recent (6/6/2006) install of etch. The core problem is that the network is not available at the time mountnfs.sh is run. The reason for this in turn is that the installer, not unreasonably, configures the network as a hotpluggable device. The relevant stanza of /etc/network/interfaces is: # This is a list of hotpluggable network interfaces. # They will be activated automatically by the hotplug subsystem. mapping eth0 script grep map eth0 # The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp On my system (Asus Terminator K7, onboard SiS900), the kernel driver doesn't deliver the hotplug 'eth0: Media Link On 100mbps full-duplex' message for some time. In my case, the system has started on the rc2.d scripts by the time it arrives and dhclient kicks off. There is therefore no network interface configured when mountnfs.sh is run. I have worked around this by reverting the network config to the old-fashioned auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp This forces the network link up at the required time. Of course, I lose the hotplugginess of eth0. -- Jim Hague - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Never trust a computer you can't lift. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. And thank you again for the precise report. Ye Fei, another Chinese guy, confirmed your exact symptoms. I can't do any better than reassign to Glibc, in the hope for more ideas. Summary: In LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.GBK or -.GB2312 locale, Mutt displaying a mail with Latin characters (coded in ISO-8859-1 or UTF-8) triggers a segfault in regexec(). Note some of those Latin chars do exist in GBK or GB2312 charset, just coded differently, and with a double-wide glyph (wcwidth(0xe9) returns 2). tag 375097 + patch thanks Le ven 23 juin 2006 11:46, Pierre Habouzit a écrit : Package: libnss-ldap Version: 251-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable in previous versions, libnss-ldap asked for an host that was the ldap server. When opening selecting file from filechooser It was generating thumbnail, for that file, but It was too long ~10second (on my 3,2GHz cpu), and during this all SC gui was frozen and it seem like it hanged-up. I don't think this is not a problem of Sylpheed-Claws, as the filechooser is a standard GTK component. Disable thumbnails and you're probably done. 2. When I finally clicked send button SC frozen once again (screen-shoot included) - GUI was disabled when I was sending this message. It took ~30sec. on my 256kibt to send that message, and during this sylpheed looked like on the attached scree-nshoot. Well, sending is a blocking operation, no surprise here. Remember that the size of the mail is not the raw sum of text size and its attachments size, these grow noticeably after encoding. 3. After all it showed me Error dialog telling me: Error occurred while posting the message to newsgrupname and then second error message: The message was queued but could not be sent. Use Send queued messages from the main window to retry. Unfortunately there is no useful information in this error messages, so I checked Tools-Log Window and here I found: [20:54:38] NNTP 441 437 Binary in non-binary group This is really important message, and It should be showed in Dialog-windows. Well, that's a matter of taste. You think it's a really important message, others may think is your duty to know the rules of the newsgroups you're posting to and Claws is not there to remind you... :) Others may even think the best option is not leting you post attachments to such groups, but I don't know if there's a way to get that info from NNTP server without posting first. Summary: 1. Generating thumbnails should be done is separate thread, or/and it should be faster (maybe that's gdk_pixbuf issue). 2. Sending messages to newsgroups should be in separate thread, so it will stop blocking main GUI If nobody has already done you can file a wishlist for fully threading operation. While it tries to use threads for some things, sylpheed-claws-gtk2 is not advertised as a fully threaded program AFAIK, so it may not be what you need. Notice making it fully threaded is not a matter of a couple of patches and involves re-designing. 3. There should be normal error-dialog telling user that this group doesn't accept binary attachments. Sorry, as said before this is not a bug, is another wishlist. These messages are server dependant and hard to translate properly, so I don't think most users want to see them directly, maybe a More info... button to open the log (or the last lines of log which caused the error) is more adequate. Other ideas (or better: patches) welcome. I've turned the bug into this whishlist, you can file the one about threading operation if you whish. regards, -- Ricardo Mones.

Bug#375106: nautilus: Cannot open subdirectory in a DAV share created by gnome-user-share
Package: nautilus Version: 2.14.1-5 Severity: important I've installed gnome-user-share package, which creates an apache2 DAV share from user's ~/Public folder. This works perfectly with Nautilus for moving, copying and deleting files. However, when I create a directory in it (e.g. ~/Public/MyDir), Nautilus can't access it, saying that the directory has a MIME type application/octet-stream. Other DAV-enabled applications can access the subfolders. Konqueror works, even gnomevfs-ls handles the subdirectory correctly (lists its contents). Changing file permisssions of the dir makes no difference. It doesn't matter how the subdirectory was created (either by DAV client, or at DAV server), it never works in nautilus. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15.7 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=czech (charmap=ISO-8859-2) Versions of packages nautilus depends on: ii desktop-file-utils 0.10-1Utilities for .desktop files ii gnome-control-center 1:2.14.2-1utilities to configure the GNOME d ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-01.11.4-2 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libc6 2.3.6-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libeel2-2 2.14.1-2 Eazel Extensions Library (for GNOM ii libesd00.2.36-3 Enlightened Sound Daemon - Shared ii libexif12 0.6.13-4 library to parse EXIF files ii libgail-common 1.8.11-2 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgail17 1.8.11-2 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgconf2-42.14.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-01:2.5.1-2 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.10.2-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-desktop-2 2.14.2-1 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome2-02.14.1-2 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-2 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-1 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 2.14.2-1 GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgtk2.0-02.8.18-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libnautilus-extension1 2.14.1-5 libraries for nautilus components ii liborbit2 1:2.14.0-1.1 libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.12.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt0 1.10-2lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii librsvg2-2 2.14.3-2 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii libstartup-notification0 0.8-1 library for program launch feedbac ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-6 X11 client-side library ii libxml22.6.26.dfsg-1 GNOME XML library ii nautilus-data 2.14.1-5 data files for nautilus ii shared-mime-info 0.17-2FreeDesktop.org shared MIME databa Versions of packages nautilus recommends: ii desktop-base 0.3.16 common files for the Debian Deskto ii eject 2.1.4-1ejects CDs and operates CD-Changer pn fam none (no description available) ii libgnomevfs2-extra2.14.2-1 GNOME virtual file-system (extra m ii librsvg2-common 2.14.3-2 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii nautilus-cd-burner2.12.3-1 CD Burning front-end for Nautilus -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#314376: libgd2-noxpm should probably not depend on libx11-6
Package: libgd2-noxpm Version: 2.0.33-3 Followup-For: Bug #314376 Package libgd2-noxpm is installed here because of analog on a system with only a web server. No X11, and not wanted. Bug#375067: [Pkg-openldap-devel] Bug#375067: Running a second instance of slapd stops /etc/init.d/slapd stop from working
On (23/06/06 08:05), Matthijs Mohlmann wrote: James Westby wrote: Package: slapd Version: 2.3.24-1 Severity: minor I have been trying to debug some problems so I use -d quite often. If i forget I can't reproduce it here, just tried your flow to reproduce but that didn't work: Hmmm. I can do it at will. Maybe i should have been more precise, sorry, let's try again. Attached is my slapd.conf if that makes any difference. I think it's because I try and start the second on a different port. /etc/init.d/slapd start (works) slapd -d 1 (fails, because port is in use) slapd -d 1 -h ldaps://0.0.0.0:80/ (fails as db is in use) /etc/init.d/slapd stop (works, check pstree -u if slapd is running) /etc/init.d/slapd stop (fails, pstree -u shows it running) slapd -d 1 (works, because slapd is stopped) /etc/init.d/slapd stop (works also, the 'slapd -d 1' is killed) Attached is a trace of the problem. If you want to run a second instance of slapd, you can better try to create another configuration file and set it up so that it doesn't interfere with the other one. I don't want a second instance, I just temporarily want a debugging instance of slapd so I can grab a trace for other bug reports. I could set up a second config etc. but this is a test system so I can pull the main one down with no worries. I realise this might not be a very common case, hence severity minor. The second thing is that I want the debugging instance on port 80 so that I can bypass a firewall that I'm too lazy to open up a port in. I'm not running a webserver. But why do you want that ? slapd can run with multiple directories ? Regards, Matthijs Mohlmann Again apologies for the poor first report, hopefully this one is better. Bug#312819: RFP: olive -- console RSS reader
I looked a little at this software. olive depends on libcurses-ui-perl. libcurses-ui-perl is currently 0.95-5 (latest on cpan - 10 Dec 2004). olive requires an extra patch for Curses/UI.pm. However you can find the patch on the author's GForge (8 months old). http://gforge.stud.inf.fh-bonn-rhein-sieg.de/scm/cvsweb.php/curses-ui/lib/Curses/?cvsroot=curses-ui I don't think that releasing cvs snapshot of libcurses-ui-perl is good. I had done a quick search for libortp-dev in the archive and in wnpp, but missed the fact that libortp4-dev was already provided by linphone.. I didn't mean to hijack your package, in fact it is a hijack from pkg-voip-maintainers to pkg-voip-maintainers, so I guess we need better co-ordination within the team. No offense taken here. Bug#356575: closed by Samuel Mimram [EMAIL PROTECTED] (glibc 2.3.5 not available anymore)
Hello, The glibc 2.3.5 is not available anymore in the debian archive. I'm closing this bug. I think this kind of misses the point. The bug is on systems with glibc 2.3.5 already installed. A versioned dependency would force those systems to upgrade to a newer glibc release. Furthermore, I suspect this bug will occur with older glibc releases as well. Bug#371135: [Pkg-cryptsetup-devel] Bug#371135: encrypted swap with variable key fails
On 22/06/2006 Florian Weimer wrote: * Jonas Meurer: why do you see any problems? it does nothing else than checking for a known filesystem before destroying any data on the source device. The current setup doesn't work with volume managers and things like that. These don't have any partition types AFAIK. Most people will call the volume something which contains the string swap, I guess, so you could use that to check. Or just note the expected volume size in the configuration file. how do you mean? even if the source device is a logical volume, it may contain a filesystem. or do you mean the old swap check script which checked for partition type 'swap'? this one doesn't exist in current cryptsetup any more. but here, you're right as it fails for logical volumes. the latest plan for swap encrypted with a random key is to check per default for known filesystems on the source device, and fail if one is found. this protects filesystems, uncrypted swap partitions and LUKS devices from being overwritten. the only cases that are known to me, where data loss may still occur are encrypted devices without an identifying header, like plain dm-crypt devices. i don't like the idea to check for string 'swap' in the source or target device, as this would enforce even more restrictions to the admin. ... jonas -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
