Hi, sorry for the delay. I experimented with pam_radius and freeradius today. I'm guessing you're using the unix module in freeradius? As long as /etc/shadow is not readable to the owner of the client-process, radius can not authenticate. So this is neither a bug in php-pam-auth, nor in pam-radius. LiveJournal seems to be pretty careless though; it also outputs some utf-8 XML files that are not valid utf-8 :-( I don't think the error message is comingf from liferea, but I don't know if it comes from libxml2 or xul. You are correct this is an error message given by libxml2. But you are totally wrong about handling invalid XML. The core idea of XML is to guarantee applications a correct content encoding by ensuring well-formedness and validity of the given data. So suggesting to have weak XML parsing invalidates the idea of XML itself. Also what should a parser do with a file that contains for example partly UTF-8 content and partly Latin-1? There is no way to decide what to do with the byte mess. With XML the rule is applications should *ALWAYS* refuse non-wellformed content. Also when using a library for parsing the application has no way to force tolerant parsing. As for libxml2 I know for sure that the author clearly disagrees with applications wanting to do tolerant parsing. Lars -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#431045: Question about validity of wfmath template code
After analyzing a build failure of wfmath with gcc-4.2, I condensed the issue it was having to the following test case: template class T, class U = int class A { public: T x1; U x2; }; template templateclass class container_with_x1 int f(const container_with_x1int y) { return y.x1; } int g() { Aint y; return f(y); } This code compiles with g++-4.1, but fails with g++-4.2 and the snapshot of g++-4.3 currently in Debian's gcc-snapshot package. My question is: is this valid code or not? -- Daniel Schepler -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In other words, I don't set one. The reason I don't set one is that terminal programs such as xterm aren't aware of UTF-8 and don't properly render certain punctuation characters when the locale is set to en_US.UTF-8. xterm's supported UTF-8 for several years (the uxterm script is an example of how to set it up). regarding certain punctuation characters, your comment gives no clues. Oh, excellent, that's exactly what I needed. That option wasn't widely available on Linux when I first ran into this problem. It's been there a while - see http://invisible-island.net/xterm/xterm.log.html#xterm_137 I don't remember exactly when I first ran into the problem in question, but suspect it was later than that. Oh, well. The certain punctuation characters include, but are not limited to, hyphens, quotes, and apostrophes. the non-ASCII ones, of course... Yeah. In particular, it seems that despite the fact that manpages can be displayed properly using a strictly ASCII character set, the man command will generate non-ASCII versions of those characters when run under the en_US.UTF-8 locale setting. This doesn't work properly at all when displaying in an xterm that isn't configured to display UTF-8. Makes me wonder why, these days, xterm doesn't by default properly display UTF-8 characters. Well, anyway, I did verify that Evince does, in fact, pay attention to my locale settings for the printer paper settings, so that lessens the effect of this bug on me. -- Kevin Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#430782: liferea: Please be more flexible with XML input
On Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 08:59:37PM +0200, Lars Lindner wrote: You are correct this is an error message given by libxml2. You'll note that I carefully did not suggest Liferea should be tolerant of the messed up UTF-8; I was just complaining about it. I fixed that elsewhere by judicious use of iconv and outside knowledge. An unbound prefix is a very different sort of error from invalid UTF-8. With XML the rule is applications should *ALWAYS* refuse non-wellformed content. Also when using a library for parsing the application has no way to force tolerant parsing. As for libxml2 I know for sure that the author clearly disagrees with applications wanting to do tolerant parsing. In any case, previous versions of liferea were able to display these common entries without trouble. I don't know if that means it did not push article bodies through libxml2; I think it somewhat likely, since this is the escaped contents of the description, not part of the RSS feed proper. Normally that's HTML, with all the attendant sloppiness, rather than well-formed XML. -- Daniel Jacobowitz CodeSourcery -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. You'll note that I carefully did not suggest Liferea should be tolerant of the messed up UTF-8; I was just complaining about it. I fixed that elsewhere by judicious use of iconv and outside knowledge. An unbound prefix is a very different sort of error from invalid UTF-8. Well, it is still complaining :-) With XML the rule is applications should *ALWAYS* refuse non-wellformed content. The reason is that the 1.0.x series did generate HTML for rendering. 1.2.x uses XHTML which automatically includes namespace checks. And to be honest I see no easy solution for embedded namespaces. Is the feed reader to be expected to extract and merge namespaces defined by the feed (and different ones over time!) into the XHTML generated to render items? Could you please add c40song.fd (and probably c41,2,3,4song.fd) to the package? Aaah, I suggest you install latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab. This is only recommended by latex-cjk-japanese, not a hard dependency, because not all people want the Wadalab fonts installed extra, since they have their own fonts. The Wadalab fonts come with c42 and c52 font definition files. What you are referring to are c40 font definition files, and are called because you use the song font, a default name for many scripts in the CJK macro. c40, c41 and c50 point to HBF fonts, these are ugly bitmap fonts. I haven't had time yet to package them, but I would advise not to use these fonts, but stick to the much more beautiful Wadalab Type1 fonts, which are not jagged unlike the HBF. If you really want, you can install the hbf-* packages and copy the .fd files from http://git.sv.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=cjk.git;a=tree;f=texinput/JIS;h=47faf731af28e7c2bbb5ebdcb763ef138fa17f00;hb=HEAD in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/CJK/JIS/ and run texhash as root to let TeX know about the existance of the new files. I'm not the maintainer of the hbf-* font packages, but I do intend to take over from the original packager when I have found the time to make some drastic (internal) changes. The reason I do not include the .fd files in any of the base latex-cjk-* packages is to avoid unnecessary clobber: the base packages don't include fonts (except for -thai), so it shouldn't provide the .fd file at all. That is on my TODO list for the hbf-* packages, hopefully for August when I should have more time. I would be inclined to depend on the Wadalab fonts since 99% of the people need it, but there is this 1% that doesn't want it. And for them an 18MB large Debian package can be considered huge bloat. I'm not sure which package installer you use, but I would thoroughly recommend aptitude, which takes care of recommended packages elegantly (press 'M' to fine-tune your own dependencies). aptitude will show latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab as a recommended package, and it is advised to install this package. I hope the package description of latex-cjk-japanese is clear enough about this. BTW, I am actually running ubuntu, but the problem seems to also exist in debian, so I am filing the bug here. Bug#422610: FTBFS: maildir-filter.c:108: warning: ignoring return value of 'realloc', declared with attribute warn_unused_result
reopen 422610 thanks Mario, It kinda defeats the purpose of using -Werror and having a compiler clever enough to output warnings about misuse of realloc(), if you are going to fix it in a way that works around the warning while still being a misuse of realloc()! for(lines=0,line=malloc(BUFSIZ);line fgets(line,BUFSIZ,stdin);lines++,line=malloc(BUFSIZ)) { size_t len = strlen(line); + char** tmpaddr=NULL; msg_len+=len; - realloc(line, len+1); + tmpaddr = realloc(line, len+1); message=realloc(message,sizeof(void*) * lines+1); message[lines]=line; You are *not allowed* to reference the original value of 'line' after it's been passed as the first argument to a successful realloc(), because the C library is allowed to *move* the allocated memory to a different address as part of the reallocation, invalidating all references to the old address. The use of a tmpaddr variable is fine, because among other things it gives you the means of checking for errors in realloc; but the actual error checking is missing, and the remaining reference to 'line' after the realloc is still invalid and a potential segfault. Even if it doesn't result in a segfault, if glibc chooses to move the pointer because of a significant reduction in block size, referencing 'line' may mean you're referencing memory that will be overwritten by a subsequent call to malloc(). I'm reopening this bug at the same severity, since the fundamental reason for the build failure has not been fixed. FWIW, and given that the code seems concerned about efficient use of memory, I would argue here for using a single, static char line[BUFSIZ] buffer and strdup()ing the contents directly to message[lines]. This gives you a constant overhead of 8k, but you effectively have that all the way through this loop anyway and the static buffer will save you the runtime overhead of repeated realloc()s. E.g.: char line[BUFSIZ]; for (lines=0;fgets(line,BUFSIZ,stdin);lines++) { msg_len+=strlen(line); message=realloc(message,sizeof(void*) * lines+1); message[lines] = strdup(line); if (!message[lines]) { fprintf(stderr,_(%s: OOM: %s\n),argv[0],strerror(errno)); exit(DEFERAL); } } Cheers, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#322457: coding this
Russell Coker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Probably the first step towards this goal would be to look at how to have cp, mv, etc all take advantage of copying to a temporary file that would be synchronised with fsync() before being renamed. Also it would be good to have an option to call fsync() before close(). Sometimes you merely want to know that the data is committed to disk before the program returns. These both sound like nice additions, but I'd guess the fsync option should be independent from the tempfile+rename option. The original request was only about tempfile+rename. My vague impression is that fsync will make things run considerably slower on many implementations, and it won't help the original requester at all. tempfile+rename fixes the problem that the original request was about. Probably part of the confusion here is due to the choice of the name --atomic to mean tempfile+rename; in some sense rename is atomic, but it's not the same sense that fsync is. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I think it is technically possible, but also really troublesome. I see. We don't have any marker indicating what sort of data the description is, unfortunately. I think expecting it to be well-formed XHTML may be... a little overly optimistic, given the sorts of things that generate RSS feeds. Maybe there's some manual way to avoid this problem - allowing the user to manually bind a specific prefix? If there isn't, I can hack up a filter for my local LJ feeds. But it would be nice if it worked out of the box. For correctness LJ should provide Atom feeds which wrap everything in a div lj:ns=http://livejournal.com/something; Of course prefix lj and URL are fictional and should be replaced with the real values I do not know. Alternatively as you suggest we could have a filter adding it afterwards. Lars -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This field does not need to be exported to the Source file, so it does not have a large impact. I've been pondering on what's the cleanest way to fix it for some time, and I tend to agree with Steve about using the make options to test for the existence of the targets. But as others have pointed out it's not clear why that change was reverted at the time. One of the issue is that tools like sbuild and pbuilder which want to take advantage of the Build-Depends-Indep split needs to know whether dpkg-buildpackage will call debian/rules build or build-arch. So if you go that route, the exact criterium used by dpkg-buildpackage need to be published as an interface. Any additional detail is available at http://bugs.debian.org/218893 Cheers, -- Bill. Bug#431118: menu: transition to XDG *.desktop menu system
Package: menu Version: 2.1.33 Severity: wishlist -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Given how the XDG format is derivated from Debian's own menu and has become standard accross the board on a wide variety of desktop environments and window managers, migrating Debian's menu system to XDG would be extremely desirable. For one thing, this would save maintainers of applications packages lot of work in creating menu entries and in patching upstream WM code to support Debian's own menu system. Once the transition is done, they would be leveraging the existing XDG menu entry that is included in upstream packages. Likewise, migrating every WM's menu support to XDG can be readily accomplished by borrowing code from a plethora of possible sources, such as GNOME and KDE. Heck, many other window managers can already support the XDG standard out of the box. Granted, the transition period will make a few teeth grind, but we only need to do this once. Afterwards, we will only be supporting the standard. - -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i586) Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-lx (PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages menu depends on: ii dpkg1.13.25 package maintenance system for Deb ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.1.1-21 GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-21 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 menu recommends no packages. - -- no debconf information -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFGhXTWeXr56x4Muc0RArA4AJ9bBCd5dyYYQpZmZ33u3vMn2cQq7wCdHF1S PHXOh+KTaghhSFk2bOygGJw= =Szkl -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. This proposal does essentialy two things: - Disambiguate GPL/LGPL versioning requirement by extending it to any DFSG compatible version the FSF may publish. - Deprecate use of symlinks, since they're a source of problems (as exposed by GPLv3, see http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2007/06/msg00234.html) Symlinks are not a problem. The real problem are hardcoded references to GPL when they should have been references to GPL-2. For programs which are under GPL v2 or later or GPL v3 or later (most of them, if I'm not mistaken), the symlink is useful, so it should be kept. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#367825: Patch for bjam segfault with g++-4.2
I found that if bjam was compiled with -fno-strict-aliasing, it didn't segfault anymore. It seems the hash table code is what's violating the strict aliasing rules. I've attached a patch to turn on -fno-strict-aliasing, for the main compile as well since even under g++-4.1 some of the libraries (like boost-python) tripped those warnings as well. I also fixed a few implicit declaration warnings and so on that might have caused trouble on 64-bit systems. I'll hold off on adding the patch tag until I've tested that the entire build works OK. -- Daniel Schepler diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/build/v2/tools/gcc.jam boost-1.34.0/tools/build/v2/tools/gcc.jam --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/build/v2/tools/gcc.jam 2007-05-03 02:09:04.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/build/v2/tools/gcc.jam 2007-06-29 18:28:05.0 -0400 @@ -268,8 +268,8 @@ # Declare flags and action for compilation flags gcc.compile OPTIONS optimizationoff : -O0 ; -flags gcc.compile OPTIONS optimizationspeed : -O3 ; -flags gcc.compile OPTIONS optimizationspace : -Os ; +flags gcc.compile OPTIONS optimizationspeed : -O3 -fno-strict-aliasing ; +flags gcc.compile OPTIONS optimizationspace : -Os -fno-strict-aliasing ; flags gcc.compile OPTIONS inliningoff : -fno-inline ; flags gcc.compile OPTIONS inliningon : -Wno-inline ; diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/build.jam boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/build.jam --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/build.jam 2006-07-23 12:24:21.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/build.jam 2007-06-29 18:23:58.0 -0400 @@ -153,7 +153,7 @@ ## GCC 2.x, 3.x, 4.x toolset gcc gcc : -o : -D : -pedantic -[ opt --release : [ opt --symbols : -g : -s ] -O3 ] +[ opt --release : [ opt --symbols : -g : -s ] -O3 -fno-strict-aliasing ] [ opt --debug : -g -O0 -fno-inline ] -I$(--python-include) -Wno-long-long : -L$(--python-lib[1]) -l$(--python-lib[2]) ; diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/builtins.c boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/builtins.c --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/builtins.c 2006-08-28 15:33:41.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/builtins.c 2007-06-29 18:12:45.0 -0400 @@ -24,6 +24,7 @@ # include compile.h # include native.h # include variable.h +# include timestamp.h # include ctype.h /* @@ -63,6 +64,13 @@ void backtrace_line( FRAME *frame ); void print_source_line( PARSE* p ); +void init_set(); +void init_path(); +void init_regex(); +void init_property_set(); +void init_sequence(); +void init_order(); + RULE* bind_builtin( char* name, LIST*(*f)(PARSE*, FRAME*), int flags, char** args ) { argument_list* arg_list = 0; diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/debug.c boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/debug.c --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/debug.c 2005-10-02 20:47:36.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/debug.c 2007-06-29 18:09:39.0 -0400 @@ -107,8 +107,8 @@ profile_total.memory += p-memory; } printf(%10d %10d %10d %12.6f %10d %10d %s\n, -p-num_entries, p-cumulative, p-net, q, -p-memory, mem_each, + (int) p-num_entries, (int) p-cumulative, (int) p-net, q, + (int) p-memory, (int) mem_each, p-name); } diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/hcache.c boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/hcache.c --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/hcache.c 2003-07-11 02:49:32.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/hcache.c 2007-06-29 18:14:43.0 -0400 @@ -162,7 +162,7 @@ { if (!s) s = ; -fprintf(f, %lu\t%s\n, strlen(s), s); +fprintf(f, %lu\t%s\n, (unsigned long) strlen(s), s); } void @@ -314,10 +314,10 @@ else if (c-age maxage) continue; - sprintf(includes_count_str, %lu, list_length(c-includes)); - sprintf(hdrscan_count_str, %lu, list_length(c-hdrscan)); - sprintf(time_str, %lu, c-time); - sprintf(age_str, %lu, c-age); + sprintf(includes_count_str, %lu, (unsigned long) list_length(c-includes)); + sprintf(hdrscan_count_str, %lu, (unsigned long) list_length(c-hdrscan)); + sprintf(time_str, %lu, (unsigned long) c-time); + sprintf(age_str, %lu, (unsigned long) c-age); write_netstring(f, CACHE_RECORD_HEADER); write_netstring(f, c-boundname); diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/make1.c boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/make1.c --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/make1.c 2005-10-02 20:47:36.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/make1.c 2007-06-29 18:15:19.0 -0400 @@ -60,10 +60,12 @@ # include make.h # include command.h # include execcmd.h +# include debug.h +# include compile.h # include stdlib.h -#if defined(sun) || defined(__sun) +#if defined(sun) || defined(__sun) || defined(unix) || defined(__unix) #include unistd.h /* for unlink */ #endif diff -urN boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/native.c boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/native.c --- boost-1.34.0.old/tools/jam/src/native.c 2005-09-28 10:09:58.0 -0400 +++ boost-1.34.0/tools/jam/src/native.c 2007-06-29 18:13:14.0 -0400 @@ -8,6 +8,7 @@ # define P0

It seems to works just fine with the new libcrypto package. -- Mvh Anders Lagerås pgpAurpBmrf9i.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#431109: [PROPOSAL] Disambiguate of Section 12.5, Deprecate GPL/LGPL symlinks
On Sat, 30 Jun 2007, Robert Millan wrote: On Sat, Jun 30, 2007 at 12:17:00AM +0200, Santiago Vila wrote: + file. Packages should not refer to GPL and LGPL symlinks in + that directory since different, incompatible versions of these + licenses have been published by the Free Software Foundation, + hence using the symlinks could lead to ambiguity. I disagree with this. It should be ok to point to the latest version of the GPL if the program says Version X or later. Many programs do that, and we should not need to change them. Instead, I think we should amend policy in this way: Packages under a fixed, definite version of the GPL should refer to the versioned GPL file in /usr/share/common-licenses. Good idea. Should we also specify that referring to the unversioned GPL is for programs that say Version X or later ? I think this is not obvious. Obvious or not, it is, IMHO, the logical thing to do. If it needs to be written, so be it. What we need is a policy which works when GPL is a symlink to the latest available version and additionaly makes clear what people should do in each case. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#431096: docbook-xsl-doc-html: should not Recommend webserver
Am Freitag, den 29.06.2007, 19:47 +0200 schrieb Hendrik Sattler: Package: docbook-xsl-doc-html Version: 1.72.0.dfsg.1-1 Severity: normal Hi, The Recommends for a webserver seems a bit VERY strong. You probably meant to recommend (as abstract example) webserver or browser not webserver and browser Thus, the recommends line should be apache | httpd | lynx | www-browser Hm. What you suggest is exactly, what we had before fixing http://bugs.debian.org/276471. However, I think suggesting a browser should be enough. I simply don't know the reasons, why Mark used to recommend a webserver, and I cannot think of some valuable reasons. So I will remove the webserver recommendation completely.
