Hi,

Please could you remove cupsys-driver-gimpprint, foomatic-db-gimp-print,

These were etch transitional packages which were superseded by
cupsys-driver-gutenprint, foomatic-db-gutenprint and ijsgutenprint,

I uploaded gutenprint_5.0.1-1 without these packages present, but
they still seem to be hanging around.

 The procedure is given in the Developer's Reference, section 5.5.1.
 The important thing is getting approval from debian-release before
 uploading. I suppose we should use something like branches/etch for
 this in the SVN repository.

I've copied tags/0.95-1 to branches/etch and applied the (minimal)
fix there.

 I hope I can find the time to prepare uploads tomorrow night, but
 I'm quite happy if somebody else wants to take it over from here :)

I took the challenge and Gunnar has offered to contact the release
team so you can enjoy your holidays :-)

As far as I can see, 5.0.1-1 was uploaded less than a week ago and only

to give it a few more days for them to disappear :-)

All three packages are flagged for removal the next time a member of the

Bug#401794: php5-auth-pam: does not work properly with libpam-radius-auth

2007-06-29 Thread Carsten Wolff
Hi,

sorry for the delay.
I experimented with pam_radius and freeradius today. I'm guessing you're using
the unix module in freeradius? In that case, what's explained in
README.Debian of php5-auth-pam for pam_unix holds true for freeradius' unix
module, too. As long as /etc/shadow is not readable to the owner of the
client-process, radius can not authenticate.

So this is neither a bug in php-pam-auth, nor in pam-radius.

Greetings
Carsten

 I fail to see why / would be banned from an URI. :-)

Think that one through a little bit more. What would happen in the
lintian page generation code if someone had a / in their e-mail address

it's commonly used in X.500 gateway addresses.)

 http://bugs.debian.org/[EMAIL PROTECTED] is a working URL for example.

 The # clearly has a special meaning in URL... but I haven't seen an
 email with that character, the same goes for the rest of your special
 characters.

That's the definition of a corner case. We should still deal with it.
Just because you haven't seen someone use such characters in e-mail
addresses doesn't mean that they're not used, or that they may not be used
in the future.

I have a friend who uses the e-mail address ^*[EMAIL PROTECTED], which is
entirely valid under RFC 2822. He may wish to make Debian packages one of

Bug#431101: dbus: init script fails with confusing message when /proc is not mounted

2007-06-29 Thread Frédéric Brière
Package: dbus
Version: 1.1.1-3
Severity: normal

In trying to build, within a chrooted lenny, a C# package that
indirectly build-deps on dbus, I stumbled upon this:

  Setting up dbus (1.1.1-1) ...
  Starting system message bus: dbusCould not tell if SELinux is enabled: No
such file or directory
  SELinux pre-initialization failed
  invoke-rc.d: initscript dbus, action start failed.
  dpkg: error processing dbus (--configure):
   subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Turns out that dbus is looking into /proc as a last resort (which was
not mounted within the chroot), and this error message is merely the
ENOENT of the last attempt:

  13396 open(/etc/selinux/config, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)
  13396 statfs64(/selinux, 84, 0xbfc498a0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
  13396 open(/proc/mounts, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
  13396 open(/proc/filesystems, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)
  13396 write(2, Could not tell if SELinux is ena..., 64) = 64

It would be nice if dbus could either survive when /proc is not mounted
(as it did in etch), or failing that, if it could issue an error message
to that effect.

Oh, excellent, that's exactly what I needed. That option wasn't widely

Bug#430782: liferea: Please be more flexible with XML input

2007-06-29 Thread Lars Lindner

On 6/29/07, Daniel Jacobowitz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Package: liferea

Followup-For: Bug #430782

The error message is accurate:

XML Parsing Error: prefix not bound to a namespace
Location: file:///
Line Number 450, Column 119:

The XML isn't valid, but many feeds seem to have this level of
inaccuracy and it would be much more useful for liferea (or the
renderer) to cope. LiveJournal seems to be pretty careless though; it
also outputs some utf-8 XML files that are not valid utf-8 :-(

I don't think the error message is comingf from liferea, but I don't
know if it comes from libxml2 or xul.

You are correct this is an error message given by libxml2.

But you are totally wrong about handling invalid XML. The core
idea of XML is to guarantee applications a correct content encoding
by ensuring well-formedness and validity of the given data.

So suggesting to have weak XML parsing invalidates the idea of XML itself.
Also what should a parser do with a file that contains for example partly
UTF-8 content and partly Latin-1? There is no way to decide what to do
with the byte mess.

With XML the rule is applications should *ALWAYS* refuse non-wellformed
content. Also when using a library for parsing the application has no
way to force tolerant parsing. As for libxml2 I know for sure that the
author clearly disagrees with applications wanting to do tolerant parsing.

Lars

Right.

 want it to break later on.

Good idea but I'd like to wait for the release of the .22 kernel and

have with newer kernels in my laptop and they are all a little
strange. Cf.

 It still baffles me how something such as

Well ...

Should we close the bug? Or tag it unreproducible? Or ...?

 Yes, I have disabled the interfaces and I don't get any output when running
 nm-applet manually. But after I log in ps aux' shows 10 different nm-applets
 running.

Have you run nm-applet manually multiple times?
The session manager will restore the session upon login.
You can simply kill the nm-applet instances to get rid of them again.

Bug#431045: Question about validity of wfmath template code

2007-06-29 Thread Daniel Schepler
After analyzing a build failure of wfmath with gcc-4.2, I condensed the issue
it was having to the following test case:

template class T, class U = int class A { public: T x1; U x2; };
template templateclass class container_with_x1
int f(const container_with_x1int y) {
  return y.x1;
}
int g() {
  Aint y;
  return f(y);
}

This code compiles with g++-4.1, but fails with g++-4.2 and the snapshot of
g++-4.3 currently in Debian's gcc-snapshot package. My question is: is this
valid code or not?

Yeah. In particular, it seems that despite the fact that manpages can be
displayed properly using a strictly ASCII character set, the man
command will generate non-ASCII versions of those characters when run
under the en_US.UTF-8 locale setting. This doesn't work properly at all
when displaying in an xterm that isn't configured to display UTF-8.

Makes me wonder why, these days, xterm doesn't by default properly
display UTF-8 characters.

Well, anyway, I did verify that Evince does, in fact, pay attention to
my locale settings for the printer paper settings, so that lessens the
effect of this bug on me.

 Anders, do you run amule on a Pentium II system as well (or similar)?

 I suspect the problem to be in libcrypto++, which may be compiled with

Hello Jens.

If you have a look at #428150, you'll see that some users are
experiencing amule instantly dying on startup with Illegal
instructions. In the end, this is confirmed to be an issue with
libcrypto++ and it being compiled with -msse2.

This flag should not be used unless the program using it is prepared to
fall back to other code if the processor does not support these
optimizations, which I don't think is the case for libcrypto++ (but I
could be wrong, of course).

Please prepare an upload of the package taking care of this issue. As I
had to prepare test packages without -msse2 for the reporter of the bug
to test, I made them suitable for an NMU, so let me know if you'd like
me to upload those. Also, please use urgency=high, since this version
recently migrated to testing.

Thanks in advance,

Attached is the final patch for the FTBFS. It replaces the previous
patch, because apparently someone defined min and max as macros, which
causes std::min and std::max to turn out rather weirdly.

Bug#431107: sun-java5-jdk: update-alternatives broken on upgrade

2007-06-29 Thread Philipp Matthias Hahn
Package: sun-java5-jdk
Version: 1.5.0-12-1
Severity: important

During the last upgrade I got the following lines (again):
Preparing the replace sun-java5-jdk 1.5.0-11-1 (using
.../sun-java5-jdk_1.5.0-12-1_i386.deb)
Removing manually selected alternative - switching to auto mode
Removing manually selected alternative - switching to auto mode
Removing manually selected alternative - switching to auto mode
Removing manually selected alternative - switching to auto mode
The harbinger of disaster. Guess what, after that
/usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display javac
shows this:
javac - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/javac
 /usr/bin/gcj-wrapper-4.1 - priority 41
 /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/javac - priority 1041
 /usr/bin/ecj - priority 143
 /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/bin/javac - priority 53
Current `best' version is /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/javac.

I don't want gcj as my javac, I don't know how often I forced the
alternative system to use the sun-jdk-javac, but on each (security-)
upgrade, that piece of configuration is lost again and again.

Please fix the /var/lib/dpkg/info/sun-java5-jdk.prerm script to NOT
remove the alternatives on just an upgrade! Wrap in in some
if [ $1 = remove ] || [ $1 = deconfigure ]; then
update-alternatives --remove ...
fi
Since update-alternatives is idem-potent, you don't need to remove them
every time, just on removes.

Sincerely
Philipp Hahn

PS: I tagged this report important, because sometimes it happens with
/usr/bin/java, too. Then I get a Java-VM which doesn't support AWT and
my applications don't start any more.

Package: synaptic
Version: 0.60
Severity: normal

Synaptic drops search results after an action has occured which made
rebuilding the package list necessary.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Search for any package
2. Do any action described as above, Lock Version for example
3. See the search entry on the left side vanishing and the package list
on the right going empty

This makes it necessary to search again after performing such an action.

The reason is that the 1.0.x series did generate HTML for rendering.
1.2.x uses XHTML which automatically includes namespace checks. And to
be honest I see no easy solution for embedded namespaces. Is the feed
reader to be expected to extract and merge namespaces defined by the
feed (and different ones over time!) into the XHTML generated to
render items? I think it is technically possible, but also really
troublesome.

yes (and it doesn't help that groff changed the semantics of backslashed

 Makes me wonder why, these days, xterm doesn't by default properly

That's up to the packagers (who in many cases are the same people who

I'm not quite sure yet if that's a general problem on non 32bit architectures.
In that case the policy should be changed in this respect. I need to do

To temporarily work around this issue, I will disable the plugins causing that

Bug#430782: liferea: Please be more flexible with XML input

I see. We don't have any marker indicating what sort of data the
description is, unfortunately. I think expecting it to be
well-formed XHTML may be... a little overly optimistic, given the
sorts of things that generate RSS feeds.

Maybe there's some manual way to avoid this problem - allowing the
user to manually bind a specific prefix?

If there isn't, I can hack up a filter for my local LJ feeds. But it
would be nice if it worked out of the box.

Bug#431038: latex-cjk-japanese: c40song.fd is not included

 Could you please add c40song.fd (and probably c41,2,3,4song.fd) to the
 package?

Aaah, I suggest you install latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab. This is only
recommended by latex-cjk-japanese, not a hard dependency, because not all
people want the Wadalab fonts installed extra, since they have their own fonts.

The Wadalab fonts come with c42 and c52 font definition files. What you are
referring to are c40 font definition files, and are called because you use the
song font, a default name for many scripts in the CJK macro. c40, c41 and
c50 point to HBF fonts, these are ugly bitmap fonts. I haven't had time yet
to package them, but I would advise not to use these fonts, but stick to the
much more beautiful Wadalab Type1 fonts, which are not jagged unlike the HBF.

If you really want, you can install the hbf-* packages and copy the .fd files
from
http://git.sv.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=cjk.git;a=tree;f=texinput/JIS;h=47faf731af28e7c2bbb5ebdcb763ef138fa17f00;hb=HEAD
in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/CJK/JIS/ and run texhash as root to let TeX
know about the existance of the new files.

I'm not the maintainer of the hbf-* font packages, but I do intend to take
over from the original packager when I have found the time to make some
drastic (internal) changes. The reason I do not include the .fd files in any
of the base latex-cjk-* packages is to avoid unnecessary clobber: the base
packages don't include fonts (except for -thai), so it shouldn't provide the
.fd file at all. That is on my TODO list for the hbf-* packages, hopefully
for August when I should have more time.

I would be inclined to depend on the Wadalab fonts since 99% of the people
need it, but there is this 1% that doesn't want it. And for them an 18MB
large Debian package can be considered huge bloat.

I'm not sure which package installer you use, but I would thoroughly recommend
aptitude, which takes care of recommended packages elegantly (press 'M' to
fine-tune your own dependencies). aptitude will show
latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab as a recommended package, and it is advised to
install this package. I hope the package description of latex-cjk-japanese is
clear enough about this.

 BTW, I am actually running ubuntu, but the problem seems to also exist
 in debian, so I am filing the bug here.

Thank you for your bug report in Debian. It makes life much easier for me as
a maintainer to manage the bugs via one single Debian Bug Tracking System.

Best regards

Bug#422610: FTBFS: maildir-filter.c:108: warning: ignoring return value of 'realloc', declared with attribute warn_unused_result

2007-06-29 Thread Steve Langasek
reopen 422610
thanks

Mario,

It kinda defeats the purpose of using -Werror and having a compiler clever
enough to output warnings about misuse of realloc(), if you are going to
fix it in a way that works around the warning while still being a misuse
of realloc()!

for(lines=0,line=malloc(BUFSIZ);line
fgets(line,BUFSIZ,stdin);lines++,line=malloc(BUFSIZ)) {
size_t len = strlen(line);
+   char** tmpaddr=NULL;
msg_len+=len;
-   realloc(line, len+1);
+   tmpaddr = realloc(line, len+1);
message=realloc(message,sizeof(void*) * lines+1);
message[lines]=line;

You are *not allowed* to reference the original value of 'line' after it's
been passed as the first argument to a successful realloc(), because the C
library is allowed to *move* the allocated memory to a different address as
part of the reallocation, invalidating all references to the old address.

The use of a tmpaddr variable is fine, because among other things it gives
you the means of checking for errors in realloc; but the actual error
checking is missing, and the remaining reference to 'line' after the realloc
is still invalid and a potential segfault. Even if it doesn't result in a
segfault, if glibc chooses to move the pointer because of a significant
reduction in block size, referencing 'line' may mean you're referencing
memory that will be overwritten by a subsequent call to malloc().

I'm reopening this bug at the same severity, since the fundamental reason
for the build failure has not been fixed.

FWIW, and given that the code seems concerned about efficient use of memory,
I would argue here for using a single, static char line[BUFSIZ] buffer and
strdup()ing the contents directly to message[lines]. This gives you a
constant overhead of 8k, but you effectively have that all the way through
this loop anyway and the static buffer will save you the runtime overhead of
repeated realloc()s.

E.g.:

char line[BUFSIZ];
for (lines=0;fgets(line,BUFSIZ,stdin);lines++) {
msg_len+=strlen(line);
message=realloc(message,sizeof(void*) * lines+1);
message[lines] = strdup(line);
if (!message[lines]) {
fprintf(stderr,_(%s: OOM:
%s\n),argv[0],strerror(errno));
exit(DEFERAL);
}
}

Cheers,

Bug#322457: coding this

2007-06-29 Thread Paul Eggert
Russell Coker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Probably the first step towards this goal would be to look at how to have cp,
 mv, etc all take advantage of copying to a temporary file that would be
 synchronised with fsync() before being renamed. Also it would be good to
 have an option to call fsync() before close(). Sometimes you merely want to
 know that the data is committed to disk before the program returns.

These both sound like nice additions, but I'd guess the fsync option
should be independent from the tempfile+rename option. The original
request was only about tempfile+rename.

My vague impression is that fsync will make things run considerably
slower on many implementations, and it won't help the original
requester at all. tempfile+rename fixes the problem that the original
request was about. Probably part of the confusion here is due to the
choice of the name --atomic to mean tempfile+rename; in some sense
rename is atomic, but it's not the same sense that fsync is.

Bug#431112: python-pyxattr: methods on symlinks don't work correctly

2007-06-29 Thread C. Scott Ananian
Package: python-pyxattr
Version: 0.2.1-1.1
Severity: normal

xattr.listxattr(fullname, True) where fullname is the path of a broken symlink
doesn't actually get the xattrs of the symlink, as it should. In
python-pyxattr-0.2.1/xattr.c there is code like the following:

nalloc = ishandle ?
flistxattr(filedes, NULL, 0) :
listxattr(file, NULL, 0);

if(nalloc == -1) {
return PyErr_SetFromErrno(PyExc_IOError);
}

This fails when the symlink points to a non-existing file. The code should
be changed to parallel the correct invocation of the actual xattr listing:

/* Now retrieve the list of attributes */
nret = ishandle ?
flistxattr(filedes, buf, nalloc) :
dolink ?
llistxattr(file, buf, nalloc) :
listxattr(file, buf, nalloc);

We need to use llistxattr in both cases when dolink is true.

Of course prefix lj and URL are fictional and should be replaced
with the real values I do not know. Alternatively as you suggest we
could have a filter adding it afterwards.

Bug#431116: nvsetenv segfaults on efika

2007-06-29 Thread Robert Millan
Package: powerpc-utils
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

nvsetenv segfaults on efika, because for some reason /dev/nvram is full of
bogus 0xff.

I think nvsetenv should fail gracefuly instead. See attached patch.

Note: I assume MXSTRING means the obvious, but I don't know how to check. Let
me know if that's not correct ;-)

Bug#428685: kernel bugs when running xen in HVM mode

2007-06-29 Thread Markus Hochholdinger
Hi,

have you tried to set dom0 memory to a fixed value? Perhaps the explanation in
this bug could help:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=414040

The message Error: Device 5696 (vbd) could not be connected. Backend device
not found. can occur if the device is (still) in use. I've found this
sometimes if a domU was not normally shutdown.
Possible solutions:
+ kill processe(s) accessing this device
+ restart xend
+ if a block device has really a problem (io blocking) you have to reboot

Bug#394932: Potential patch to fix GCC 4.2 FTBFS

2007-06-29 Thread brian m. carlson
This is a potential patch to fix the bug. However, I cannot test it,
because it doesn't build on amd64. Because of this, I have not marked
it with the patch tag. If it does, in fact, work, please tag it
accordingly.

Bug#229357: Can we require build-arch/indep targets for lenny?

 Errr, what's the rush now to get this fixed? It's something that has
 been there like forever, the bug report proposes adding a new field
 which personally I don't like taking lightly.

This field does not need to be exported to the Source file, so it does
not have a large impact.

 I've been pondering on what's the cleanest way to fix it for some time,
 and I tend to agree with Steve about using the make options to test
 for the existence of the targets. But as others have pointed out it's
 not clear why that change was reverted at the time.

One of the issue is that tools like sbuild and pbuilder which want to
take advantage of the Build-Depends-Indep split needs to know whether
dpkg-buildpackage will call debian/rules build or build-arch. So if you
go that route, the exact criterium used by dpkg-buildpackage need to be
published as an interface.

Any additional detail is available at http://bugs.debian.org/218893

smbfs is deprecated and support for mounting subdirectories will never
be added to it.

Such support has been added to the cifs module and userland utilities
just after SambaXP 2007.

We probably don't have this in the Linux kernel yet, but that should
happen pretty soon.

Given that support in the userland utilities is already there, I
hereby propose closing this bug ASAP.

Bug#431118: menu: transition to XDG *.desktop menu system

2007-06-29 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: menu
Version: 2.1.33
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Given how the XDG format is derivated from Debian's own menu and has become
standard accross the board on a wide variety of desktop environments and window
managers, migrating Debian's menu system to XDG would be extremely desirable.

For one thing, this would save maintainers of applications packages lot of work
in creating menu entries and in patching upstream WM code to support Debian's
own
menu system. Once the transition is done, they would be leveraging the existing
XDG menu entry that is included in upstream packages.

Likewise, migrating every WM's menu support to XDG can be readily accomplished
by
borrowing code from a plethora of possible sources, such as GNOME and KDE. Heck,
many other window managers can already support the XDG standard out of the box.

Granted, the transition period will make a few teeth grind, but we only need to
do this once. Afterwards, we will only be supporting the standard.

It might also be a good idea to run your pidwatch script in more

find out whether your system uses some sort of prelinking etc.

Bug#396944: exim4 giving me problems again (#396944)

2007-06-29 Thread Bruce Sass
Hi Marc,

It happened again!

The panic log has an entry at 23:13:21 for a failed start (23:08:50 in
mainlog); pidwatch.log shows the pid disappearing between 22:50:01 and
23:00:02; dpkg.log shows an upgrade of exim4 starting with the -config
package at 22:54:22 (dpkg started logging at 22:48:07 and finished at
23:10:04).

The only other log entries around that time are for the pidwatch cron
job itself (in auth and syslog), and scrollkeeper-update unregistering
(22:54:28+) then registering (23:08:41+) three exim4 .omf files in
scrollkeeper.log.

So, how much of which logs should I send to the BTS?

- Bruce

This proposal does essentialy two things:

  - Disambiguate GPL/LGPL versioning requirement by extending it to any DFSG

  - Deprecate use of symlinks, since they're a source of problems (as exposed

Symlinks are not a problem. The real problem are hardcoded references
to GPL when they should have been references to GPL-2.

For programs which are under GPL v2 or later or GPL v3 or later
(most of them, if I'm not mistaken), the symlink is useful, so it
should be kept.

I disagree with this. It should be ok to point to the latest version
of the GPL if the program says Version X or later. Many programs
do that, and we should not need to change them.

Instead, I think we should amend policy in this way:

  Packages under a fixed, definite version of the GPL should refer to
  the versioned GPL file in /usr/share/common-licenses.

Bug#367825: Patch for bjam segfault with g++-4.2

2007-06-29 Thread Daniel Schepler
I found that if bjam was compiled with -fno-strict-aliasing, it didn't
segfault anymore. It seems the hash table code is what's violating the
strict aliasing rules.

I've attached a patch to turn on -fno-strict-aliasing, for the main compile as
well since even under g++-4.1 some of the libraries (like boost-python)
tripped those warnings as well. I also fixed a few implicit declaration
warnings and so on that might have caused trouble on 64-bit systems.

I'll hold off on adding the patch tag until I've tested that the entire
build works OK.

 Anders, do you run amule on a Pentium II system as well (or similar)?
Yes I do.

 I suspect the problem to be in libcrypto++, which may be compiled with
 optimization flags not suitable for PII. I've prepared a new version
 which does not use those flags, could you both please install this
 version and report if amule works now? Thanks.
It seems to works just fine with the new libcrypto package.

Obvious or not, it is, IMHO, the logical thing to do. If it needs to
be written, so be it.

What we need is a policy which works when GPL is a symlink to the latest
available version and additionaly makes clear what people should do
in each case.

   apache | httpd | lynx | www-browser

Hm. What you suggest is exactly, what we had before fixing
http://bugs.debian.org/276471. However, I think suggesting a browser
should be enough. I simply don't know the reasons, why Mark used to
recommend a webserver, and I cannot think of some valuable reasons. So I
will remove the webserver recommendation completely.

Regards, Daniel

Bug#431125: apache2.2-common: shouldn't depend on procps on the Hurd

2007-06-29 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: apache2.2-common
Version: 2.2.3-5
Severity: important

Hi,

The Hurd doesn't have the procps package, because ps such are provided
by package hurd. apache2.2-common should hence not depend on procps on
hurd-i386.

Bug#431022: gdm: second login not possible for same user (gdmflexiserver)

2007-06-29 Thread Kiro Zimmer
retitle 431022 gdm: allow multiple logins by default (again)
severity 431022 wishlist

Hello,
please add AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false to the default gdm.conf.
Or maybe leave a note in the debian/changelog that something changed.

Sven Arvidsson wrote:
 This works for me. Are you sure multiple logins isn't disabled in
 gdmsetup? I think the option for this is new in 2.18.

Thank you, that was the reason! ;-)
But there were no changes made in gdm.conf, meanwhile the behavior
changed from allow to forbid...

Regards,
Kiro
