Bug#469959: closed by Ove Kaaven [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Re: Bug#469959: wine: Uses latin only fonts as substitution for the hardcoded tahoma.)
Indeed there are files called tahoma.ttf and tahomabd.ttf, installed in /usr/share/wine/fonts by winelib package. Unfortunately this is not the Microsoft Tahoma font (which WINE was designed for), because Tahoma's EULA does not allow it to be distributed this way. Instead, copy of the free, but latin only Bitstream Vera Sans font was edited to mimic as Tahoma (and most likely to also provide matching metrics as you say). The bug i reported _does_ exist. It appears exactly because the font, edited to carry the name Tahoma in libwine is covering only latin characters, while WINE itself is hardcoded to use it to display localised messages in many languages that use nonlatin alphabets. When locale settings specify such language, WINE behaves exactly as i described: Another, seemingly random font is chosen as substitution and used in all widgets that are hardcoded to use Tahoma. The choice varies from installation to installation, but is usually either another latin only font or in some situations one that lacks even latin characters. Downloading manually the original Tahoma from Microsoft and placing it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts can solve the problem, but in most cases is not possible because of the licensing issues. Right now i use copy of Dejavu Sans (based on the same Bitstream Vera Sans, on which libwine's Tahoma is based), edited to mimic as Tahoma and placed in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts. It's metrics may not be perfect (as with substitution fonts that WINE choses by the way), but at least it works with localised WINE better than current Tahoma - it is possible to actually read the text. With more information on the other changes, that must be made to Dejavu Sans to make it suitable for use with WINE i may be able to futer edit it and provide more suitable replacement Tahoma than the currently used one. Because the bug _does_ exist it is appropriate to reopen it, until WINE provides either suitable font, or at least documented way to force suitable substitution. Of cause you can also claim, that WINE was never intended to be localized or used in countries with non latin alphabet and leave the bug closed. You're wrong. It's in libwine. (Arial would of course be another story, but Tahoma is definitely in there.) Such fonts can be found in the ttf-dejavu package for example. DejaVu cannot replace Tahoma. To be a compatible replacement, the font metrics must match, which they don't. -- Forwarded message -- From: Dimitar Kavlakov [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Debian Bug Tracking System [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sat, 08 Mar 2008 11:47:52 +0200 Subject: wine: Uses latin only fonts as substitution for the hardcoded tahoma. Package: wine Version: 0.9.56-1 Severity: normal Tags: l10n Various parts of WINE are hardcoded to use the non-free Tahoma font, that is not provided by any Debian package. If the user does not want to install manually this font (or can't install it because of licensing issues) WINE seems to randomly chose another font (actually the choice may not be random, but usually varies from computer to computer) as substitution. Almost allays such font lacks nonlatin characters, needed to display localized messages and dialogs, and sometimes it lacks even latin characters (in one case font with music symbols was chosen for example). To avoid any need to use non free font, most suitable solution will be to replace the hardcoded Tahoma with a free font, choosing one that covers as many sets of characters as possible. Such fonts can be found in the ttf-dejavu package for example. Also a dependency on the selected font package must be added, because WINE actually does depend on suitable font to display dialogs correctly.

Let me know if there's objections to that. Right now upstream has released 0.24.2 which I began to package for upload, but there are a few issues that showed up after release and it is expected that 0.24.3 will be released on Wednesday to correct these problems (I'm currently testing that branch now). So, I think we are getting really close to uploading a new package, and we can include this patch at that time. Excellent, thanks! Thijs

It's the version from etch, with a patch backported from upstream that may fix the problem. You only need to install the new nscd, the other binary packages have been built because they are part of the same source package. It seems to be much better: I didn't have a single crash during a whole working week (5 days); But I won't be able to test for longer periods of time... Bug#470144: debian-installer: broken cyrillic messages in the log console while installation
Hello Yuri, On Sunday 09 March 2008, Yuri Kozlov wrote: While installation from AMD64-CD1 and selecting Russian language I can not read russian messages in the log console (Alt-F4). Screenshots included. This is a known issue (can't find other BRs right now, but I'm sure we have them). It is a somewhat limited problem as it only affects the installation after base installation, but still annoying if that's where your problem is. I think that an issue like this will in practice only get solved if someone who is affected by it puts some time in it. And even then I'm not sure that we can solve it in all cases, especially if the solution would cost a lot in terms of memory or initrd size. Note that you should be able to read the logs by using the web server option in Save debug logs, though I agree that's a workaround instead of a real solution. Jérémy Bobbio is working on supporting a graphical terminal in the graphical installer. I've just tried an install in Russian using his demo image and that _does_ solve the problem [1] (not tested if it also works for languages using combining scripts). Bug#470241: dpkg-gensymbols doesn't look for libraries in /emul/ia32-linux/
On Mon, 10 Mar 2008, Matthias Klose wrote: Package: dpkg-dev dpkg-gensymbols doesn't look for libraries in /emul/ia32-linux/ current workaround is to keep libraries in /lib32 and /usr/lib32, run dpkg-gensymbols and then move those to /emul/ia32-linux/. I'm sorry, you'll have to prove your point because that's not right AFAIK. dpkg-gensymbols uses the array @librarypath coming from /usr/share/perl5/Dpkg/Shlibs.pm and it includes: use constant DEFAULT_LIBRARY_PATH = qw(/lib /usr/lib /lib32 /usr/lib32 /lib64 /usr/lib64 /emul/ia32-linux/lib /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib); our @librarypaths = (DEFAULT_LIBRARY_PATH); Or maybe /emul/ia32-linux/ contains directly the libraries and doesn't contain sub-directories? Bug#470191: libintl-gettext-ruby1.8: [armel] intl.so installed in wrong directory
severity 470191 important thanks Hello, As far as I understood, armel is still optional, so I don't think this qualifies as an RC bug; therefore downgrading the severity. intl.so should be installed into /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/arm-linux-eabi/ so that ruby can find it. Currently it's installed into /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/arm-linux/ That is probably not a libintl-gettext-ruby problem, but most likely a ruby1.8-dev problem. The problem you signal means that libintl-gettext-ruby was compiled with a broken rbconfig.rb file (ruby's extension configuration). Either this problem has been fixed but this library not recompiled, either it is still open, in which case I'll file a bug report on ruby1.8-dev. Bug#458437: acpi-support and laptop-mode-tools interaction broken
Kapil Hari Paranjape wrote: Dear Bart, Thanks for your detailed response. On Sun, 09 Mar 2008, Bart Samwel wrote: Possible reasons: laptop-mode-tools make a number of changes to the system and some of them may be interfering with resume. One would need to break down the process further to figure out the problem: 1. hdparm 2. cpufreq settings 3. kernel laptop-mode settings Perhaps, if someone has time this could be investigated further. It would be possible to pin this down, simply by disabling options in laptop-mode.conf one by one. It would be you who would have to do it though, so, do you have time? ;-) I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.24 a little while ago and suspend/resume has been much more stable since then. I must confess that I am a little hesitant about breaking it now! Here is the sequence of steps that I could carry out at some point: 1. Create a fresh minimal sid install with acpi-support and laptop-mode-tools. (Should I have X?) 2. Try turning on the hard disk features in laptop-mode-tools one by one and see whether suspend/resume works. (Should I create a workload environment?) Would that be what you want? It could -- but you would have to purge the acpi-support package, and then install the old acpi-support package, that doesn't include the fix for this bug. Alternatively, you could use your normal system and: 1. Backup /etc/laptop-mode and /etc/acpi (remember to use cp -a for that, so that the attributes are remembered. :-) ). 2. Purge the acpi-support package, to get rid of all config files. 3. Install acpi-support 0.103-5. 4. Check that suspend and hibernate still break. 5. Turn off options in laptop-mode.conf one by one until it works. 6. Tell me what the last option was that you turned off. 7. Go back to your current config and be happy. :-) Cheers, Bart -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#470250: po4a spins on the cpu consuming ever more memory
Package: po4a Version: 0.33-1 dpkg 1.15.1 (on the branch whose status is currently disputed) does not build on sid because po4a spins on the cpu consuming more and more memory. I reproduced the bug like this: really pbuilder --build --distribution sid --buildresult /u/ian/an-things/Dpkg2/build/result dpkg_1.15.1.dsc 21 |tee log of which the important part is this: pbuilder --build --distribution sid dpkg_1.15.1.dsc At http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ian/2008-03-10-po4a-bug/ you can find dpkg 1.15.1 in Debian source package format, and the full log from the build (the file `log' from tee, above). I left it running since about 8pm last night and when I came in just now it had used 450Mby and had produced no further output. I sent it a SIGTERM to get my computer back. Here is the invocation command line in context: make[3]: Entering directory `/tmp/buildd/dpkg-1.15.1/build-tree/origins' make[3]: Nothing to be done for `all'. make[3]: Leaving directory `/tmp/buildd/dpkg-1.15.1/build-tree/origins' Making all in man make[3]: Entering directory `/tmp/buildd/dpkg-1.15.1/build-tree/man' po4a --no-backups --variable srcdir=../../man \ ../../man/po/po4a.cfg make[3]: *** [man.stamp] Terminated It may be that there are some problems with the translations. There were many translation changes in the git tree which my package inherited, which had not previously been released and had perhaps therefore never been built in a clean sid chroot with recent po4a. Even so, if it is due to a bad translation it would be good to have an error message rather than this misbehaviour. 1.15.0 which you can find in the same directory built in a clean lenny chroot. I don't think I've run a formal test of 1.15.1 on lenny. Thanks, Ian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The change in grep was reverted, so your usage is still OK! That's good news! But anyway, since I now spent several days (yeah - I am slow) rewriting my copyright-check routine in perl with nicer and more reliable output, I will probably update all the packages anyway. Have you thought about forwarding your rule to the cdbs maintainers? If 30-40 packages are using it, it might be worth moving there (and would make things easier to fix). I am a CDBS maintainer myself (altough I have been quiet on that front for quite some time). And my snippets are all tracked in a quiet corner of the CDBS Subversion repository :-) I briefly describe my reasoning for maintaining the snippets off of the main CDBS in the README.cdbs-tweaks file in the source of my packages. I just never found the time or interest to convince the others about the usefulness of the snippets, or to document them. If I recall correctly the latter was the cause of the snippets getting rejected when I attempted to add them a long time ago. I consider creating a cdbs-hacks package, initially with my snippets but also inviting other snippets without requiring documentation or consensus as is needed with CDBS proper. Bug#469959: closed by Ove Kaaven [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Re: Bug#469959: wine: Uses latin only fonts as substitution for the hardcoded tahoma.)
Dimitar Kavlakov skrev: The bug i reported _does_ exist. Not as filed, no. You weren't asking nicely to look into any symptoms, nor specified any glyphs you lacked - you were complaining about usage of non-existent fonts and license issues. I'd guess you probably really wanted to complain about bug #467610, which is still open, and you can rant in there (along with the others) if you like. (Unless, of course, the problem is that Wine somehow can't load Tahoma at all...) Following the link to the upstream bug report may also be informative. FWIW, they've added Cyrillic to Tahoma in 0.9.57, so there's progress. (I still need to get around to packaging it, though...) And if you're fine with packages from contrib, you can install msttcorefonts, chances should then be high that Arial is chosen instead of a random font. With more information on the other changes, that must be made to Dejavu Sans to make it suitable for use with WINE i may be able to futer edit it and provide more suitable replacement Tahoma than the currently used one. Feel free to contribute to Wine's Tahoma. The Wine developers would welcome the help. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#470037: (no subject)
I think this report is invalid, as the description confirms to the policy as quoted below. The top beginner question is will kvm run on my hardware? (based on about half a year of experience providing support for KVM in #kvm on the Freenode network - I don't do this regularly anymore), which of course is the basic question that needs to be answered in order to decide whether they want to install it. This is why I included the procedure to determine this in the package description. Debian Policy Manual, 3.4: The description should describe the package (the program) to a user (system administrator) who has never met it before so that they have enough information to decide whether they want to install it. http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-binary.html#s-descriptions From section 3.4.2 The description field needs to make sense to anyone, even people who have no idea about any of the things the package deals with. The reasons for the recommended and suggested packages are also described as per policy: Debian Policy Manual, 3.4: The description should also give information about the significant dependencies and conflicts between this package and others, so that the user knows why these dependencies and conflicts have been declared. I do however support adding the same information to the README[.Debian] file, to give a chance to the overly optimistic users who just do an apt-get install kvm without ever reviewing the package description. Thanks for helping to improve the package, Cheers, -- Leonard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#470144: debian-installer: broken cyrillic messages in the log console while installation
2008/3/10, Frans Pop [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I think that an issue like this will in practice only get solved if someone who is affected by it puts some time in it. And even then I'm not sure that we can solve it in all cases, especially if the solution would cost a lot in terms of memory or initrd size. Ok. Bug#469450: texlive-latex-recommended: ucshyper forces pdf output
2008. március 8. 15.36 dátummal ezt írta: Hmm, ucs in general and ucshyper.sty in particular is currently unmaintained. This makes it difficult to check whether or not your patch does the right thing. However, AFAIK hyperref's Unicode support has improved quite a bit since ucshyper.sty was written. Is ucshyper still necessary? If yes, in which circumstances? In my simple tests I was able to produce bookmarks in PDF without using ucshyper at all (both with pdflatex and latex+dvips+ps2pdf). You are right. Hyperref now includes support of ucs, so yes, ucshyper is not needed any more. I was not aware of this when writing the original bug report. Note that option hyperref of ucs.sty loads ucshyper. So this option should be removed or modified if you remove ucshyper.sty. In my opinion, it is better to load hyperref instead of this option anyway, since then it is possible to pass options to hyperref and to ensure that hyperref is loaded late enough. Bug#406986: Upgrade B2evolution 0.9.2 to 1.10.2
Hi all, Sorry for not responding sooner to your emails. I'm not using b2evolution anymore, thus explaining my lack of responsiveness. Anyway, I'm ready to package a new version of b2evolution for Debian. Currently, two upstream versions are available: - 1.10.3 dated from 2007-11-01 and which is a stable version. - 2.4.0 dated from 2008-01-23 and which is a RC4 version. Which version do you think is the best ? Anyway, we won't avoid the upgrade issue from the old 0.9.2 version to the new version. This is even implying a database upgrade which can be very tricky to package So, what do you think is the best? Bug#428050: unfinite loop inside xdm
After a few days of normal work xdm hangs and doesn't respond to the remote xdmcp queries anymore. It wastes CPU and does nothing. I strace it, look below. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo strace -p 4319 21 | head Process 4319 attached - interrupt to quit read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 read(5, , 4096) = 0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ I used 'head' here because the list of read calls is unfinite. Hi Aleksey, sorry for the late reply. Do you still experience this problem with xdm? If this is the case, could you attach gdb to the xdm process and get a backtrace, so we know where it's stuck? After upgrade to xdm-1.1.4-3 I don't see this problem anymore. If I'll see it again, I show backtrace. -- Best regards, Aleksey Cheusov. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
