Bug#508485: fop: executable does not work; binary package dependency needs updating
Package: fop Version: 1:0.95.dfsg-1 Severity: grave Tags: patch Justification: renders package unusable Hi, First of all, sorry for making a fuss by reporting an RC bug. Although fop switched to use openjdk-6-jdk instead of java-gcj-compat-dev and also changed some more dependencies in version 1:0.95.dfsg-1, some items in Depends still remains old. That resulted in the executable not working in my environment: $ fop [warning] /usr/bin/fop: No java runtime was found Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.apache.fop.apps.FopFactory [snip] I found openjdk-6-jre not installed and then installed it. However: $ fop Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/xmlgraphics/image/loader/ImageContext [snip] I downloaded the source package and then found that Depends had "libxmlgraphics-commons-java (>= 1.2)" although Build-Depends-Indep has "libxmlgraphics-commons-java (>= 1.3)". The version of mine was 1.2.dfsg-1 from unstable. So, I installed 1.3.1.dfsg-1 from experimental and then fop worked correctly. I also found that libxml-commons-external-java was added in Build-Depends-Indep in 1:0.95.dfsg-1, but not in Depends. Since libxml-commons-external-java was already installed in my system, the missing dependency did not caused an error. But I think it would be better to have the package in Depends. Here attached a patch to update three dependencies above. Could you please check and apply it? Bug#503163: libgettext-ruby1.8: executable programs should be installed in /usr/bin
Package: libgettext-ruby1.8 Version: 1.91.0-2 Severity: important Hi Tatsuki, Although rgettext, rmsgfmt, and rmsgmerge are shipped as binary programs in bin in the source package, they are strangely installed under /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/gettext. Since the permissions are automatically fixed, this may not violate the Debian Policy and may not be a release-critical issue. ;-) However, this affects usability. It would be better if we can see these bugs fixed in lenny. Note that when you move those programs to /usr/bin, please change their shebang lines to "#!/usr/bin/ruby1.8". Also, it would be good to use /usr/share/ruby-pkg-tools/1/class/ruby-setup-rb.mk in ruby-pkg-tools for handling setup.rb easily. Since this will make the change larger, it would be good to do the switch in post-lenny. Package: rsyslog Version: 3.18.2-1 Severity: important Tags: patch Hi, Youhei SASAKI, a Japanese Debian contributor, reports that he uninstalled rsyslog but log rotation for rsyslog keeps performed after that and cron sends him a failure notice each time. Package: fop Version: 1:0.94.dfsg-2 Severity: wishlist Hi, fop command can use an "xconf" configuration file for run-time configuration. xconf is a kind of XML and users cannot write configuration without seeing (or copying) an example. Bug#482364: gettext-el: patch for po-mode to save buffer when PO-Revision-Date is hold
Package: gettext-el Version: 0.17-2 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi, po-mode provides po-auto-replace-revision-date, an option for users to decide whether PO-Revision-Date field in the header should be automatically updated or not. However, when users choose holding that field, by setting that variable to "ask" and answering "n" to "May I set PO-Revision-Date? (y or n) " or by setting that variable to "nil", the field is not updated AND THE BUFFER IS NOT SAVED. I've confirmed that this issue represents in Emacs 21 and Emacs 22. This may be a bug due to a fact[1] that Emacs considers the buffer is saved when a hook in write-contents-hooks returns non-nil. So, I've created a patch to fix the issue. Could you please apply it? Bug#456768: skksearch: proposal for improving configuration of dictionaries
Package: skksearch Version: 0.0-15 Severity: wishlist As a maintainer of the skksearch package, I have been looking for a way to improve configuration of dictionaries. This report provides a plan and also is a reminder. Currently, skksearch provides default configuration as follows: # type:file cdb:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.cdb # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO # skkdic-extra # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.JIS2 # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.JIS2004 # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.JIS3_4 # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.assoc # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.china_taiwan # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.fullname # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.geo # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.hukugougo # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.itaiji # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.itaiji.JIS3_4 # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.jinmei # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.law # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.mazegaki # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.noregist # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.not_wrong # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.notes # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.okinawa # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.propernoun # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.pubdic+ # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.requested # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.station # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.zipcode # plain:/usr/share/skk/SKK-JISYO.office.zipcode Obviously, the default setting uses a cdb-style dictionary in the skkdic-cdb package. However, the skksearch package depends on `skkdic-cdb | skkdic | skkdic-extra'. So, users must edit /etc/skksearch.conf if they choose to install other dictionary packages than skkdic-cdb. Of course, this is a petty problem; users just tweak the configuration file to use other dictionary data. However, it would be better if we can provide default settings based on installed dictionary packages. I am considering to make an improvement described as follows, which makes the situation better: * skksearch reads configuration files in /etc/skksearch.conf.d (in a way similary to how run-parts works) instead of /etc/skksearch.conf. * skkdic{,-cdb,-extra} installs configuration files to that directory. (I had noticed this issue for a long time and intended to make an improvement some time, but the priority had been so low. I thank to Kenshi Muto (kmuto) for pointing out the issue and giving a suggestion to resolve the problem via IRC. The discussion with him (in Japanese) is attached to this report.) Only one minor problem that I've found is that I find my translation for a word "Japanese" as the description for a tag "culture::japanese" in http://packages.debian.net/sid/skkdic although I did not translate that word in debtags.ja.po yet; the translation for "Japanese" in langs.ja.po was used where that in debtags.ja.po should be (Since I have already translated that word in debtags.ja.po, I cannot reproduce the situation above now, but this issue can be seen in such as http://packages.debian.net/sid/skkdic?lang=fi ). This issue is not so big because the translation for "Japanese" in debtags.ja.po is usually the same as one in langs.ja.po. ;-) I'm testing http://packages.debian.net/ daily, and do not see any problems except for that. > I've not yet merged that to the debian-master branch. Bug#454169: How about categorizing webkit into "devel" (or "libs"), not "web"?
Package: webkit Version: 0~svn27674-1 Severity: wishlist Hi, Currently, webkit is categorized into the "web" section. If webkit provides some browser like iceweasel does, that section would be appropriate. However, webkit actually provides a rendering engine and other tools such as epiphany-browser and liferea use it. So, IMHO it is good to categorize webkit into "devel" or "libs", like xulrunner categorized into "devel". I think packages in e.g. "devel" and "libs" may get higher priority when built with the buildd network and it prevents dependent packages from waiting so long, but I'm not sure. Thank you for trying to contact with the upstream author. Since I am not a native English speaker (nor a lawyer), I also feel insecure about subtleties of expressions, but I'm willing to help you if I can. I think the key points are as follows: * Debian respects software's freeness. * The old license of EDICT used in 2003 was considered to be "free" in the Debian's meaning. * CC by-sa 2.5 is not considered to be "free" in the Debian's meaning, but 3.0 may be considered to be "free". (ref. http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Version_3#Debian ) * We mistakenly included EDICT's versions distributed under CC by-sa 2.5 in the Debian's stable release since we were unaware of the license change. * We'd like the upstream author to upgrade the license to CC by-sa 3.0. * It would be glad if a retroactive license upgrade to CC by-sa 3.0 is permitted. * It is easy to upgrade a software's license from CC by-sa 2.5 to 3.0; the change is not big for normal developers, although it is important for Debian. P.S. Although correctly addressed to me, your message seems to have failed to reach me. Curiously, I also couldn't receive a copy from BTS; something bothers me. Bug#453428: ttf-vlgothic: Please upgrade dependency on fontconfig
Package: ttf-vlgothic Version: 20061026-1 Severity: normal Hi, ttf-vlgothic has a dependency on fontconfig as follows: Suggests: x-ttcidfont-conf, xserver-xorg | xfs (>= 4.0.2-1), fontconfig (>= 2.4.1) However, the package suggests (or recommends) a setting introduced into the fontconfig-config package from its version 2.4.2-1.3. Bug#390859: What's the status of aptitude-doc-ja?
Hi Daniel, Although Japanese HTML documentation has been included in the source package of aptitude for about one year, aptitude-doc-ja binary package has not yet been created. Since I know that addition of a binary package forces the source package to pass the NEW queue, I don't intend to hasten you. :-) Yes, in making a decision on the package upload schedule, Debian's release schedule and the package upload schedule of apt are much more important than adding a translation package for a language. But if you can find a good timing (e.g. adding a -dbg package as wished in Bug#448884), could you please consider adding aptitude-doc-ja? P.S. I'd love to restart Japanese translation works for ja.po and doc/ja within this year (Currently I have some other things to do...). Bug#447180: Conflict between packages.debian.org// and packages.debian.org//
Package: www.debian.org Severity: normal Hi, When I wanted to see information on the "perl" package, I searched with a keyword "perl" and I got an exact hit in the result page[1]. However, when I clicked a link labeled as "sid (unstable)", I saw a page for "perl" section. The link URL was http://packages.debian.org/sid/perl, which can be interpreted both as "perl package in sid" and as "perl section in sid". Since the URL was used in everywhere in the package page (e.g. a link labeled as "perl" in the "Other Packages Related to debhelper" area in the debhelper package page[2]), I could not go to my destination, the "perl package" page. Finally, I found a link to the "perl package" page in the "perl section" page. The URL of perl package page was http://packages.debian.org/sid/perl/perl. The same happens for "python", which is also a name of a package and name of a section. Could you please supply some resolution of this kind of name conflicts? I think using the packages.debian.org//*/ URL for packages instead of the packages.debian.org// URL will be effective, but it requires a change in the URL interface. Bug#446622: kazehakase: modifying UA required to use Google's Gmail fully
Package: kazehakase Version: 0.4.2-1 Severity: minor Tags: patch Hi, Although other Gecko-based web browsers such as Iceweasel and Epiphany are fully supported by Google's Gmail, the packaged version of Kazehakase is "not supported". Users of Kazehakase with the default UA setting would see a "basic HTML view" of the Gmail service and told to access with fully-supported browsers to use all of Gmail's features, as shown in a help page[1]. Of course, Kazehakase is as well supported as other Gecko-based web browsers and users of Kazehakase can use all of Gmail's features when they access with proper UA settings. Although the UA setting can be modified by users individually, it would be nice to modify the default setting to make the browser accepted by Gmail. Here is a patch to do so, retrieved from revision 3230 of the upstream repository. Although this change is a part of improvements in Kazehakase 0.4.9, it is a very minor but effective tweak and should be applied to the source before that version. Bug#445020: edict & kanjidic: License discrepancy between the Debian package and upstream, upstream's license being non-free
Package: edict Version: 2006.10.09-1 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 2.2.1 Hi, Current license for edict and kanjidic seems to be CC by-sa 2.5, which is different from a custom license described in debian/copyright and is not DFSG-free. IMHO the best solution for this situation is proposing an upgrade of the license to CC by-sa 3.0 and including licence.html in the source packages. Detailed descriptions = First of all, there are three facts: * Although the license statement described in debian/copyright in the edict and kanjidic packages seems to be a custom license of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group at Monash University, which is considered to be DFSG-free, the online license statement[1] says these packages are distributed under CC by-sa. * There are no license descriptions in .orig.tar.gz tarballs of Debian source packages for edict and kanjidic, which seem to be rolled by you package maintainers since the upstream does not distribute the software (dictionary data files) as a tarball. However, edict_doc.html and kanjidic_doc.html point the online license page for license information. So, what is described on that page now is the actual license statement. * The online license page only says that the license for distribution is CC by-sa and does not specify its version. However, the license deed and full license code linked from that page is ones of CC by-sa 2.5, which is not considered to be DFSG-free. >From these facts, I guess that the upstream changed the license from the custom one to CC by-sa 2.5 without notice. It is obvious from web.archive.org[2] that the current license was already used in July, 2006. To solve this situation, I make two proposals: * To give the upstream suggestions to upgrade the license to CC by-sa 3.0 and to specify that version clearly in the license page. * To include licence.html in the Debian source packages for edict and kanjidic. Although whether Debian now declare CC by 3.0 and CC by-sa 3.0 to be DFSG-free or not was uncertain[3], I hope CC by-sa 3.0 is considered to be DFSG-free now that ttf-konatu[4], a Japanese font package licensed by CC by-sa 3.0, has got in the Debian main archive. # I am maintaining the skkdic package and its upstream release # contains an edict-derivative dictionary (My predecessors and I have # considered it to be non-free and excluded it from the package). # Also, I'd like to package a program which uses kanjidic2.xml. Bug#403838: gmt 4.1.4-0.1~nori1
Hi, Since I received a report from a Japanese user that Bug#403837 in GMT 4.1.2 is irritating, I've built and uploaded gmt 4.1.4-0.1~nori1 to my debian package directory in the university. This fixes #403837, #403838, and #404136 (and do nothing otherwise). Could you please test it with a following APT line? deb http://dolphin.c.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~nori1/debian unstable/ (Only a binary version for sid i386 is available.) (Although I know that 4.2 has also been released, 4.1.2 seems to be more stable than 4.2, which may have bugs like Bug#403837. So, I only provide 4.1.2 now.) Torsten: If you are busy, could you please give me approval to do NMU? I'll upload this version with changing the version number to 4.1.4-0.1 and changing "Non-maintainer work" in the Debian changelog to "Non-maintainer upload". I think > I have seen also text written from top to bottom? No, it is not a stupid question. :-) We use both left-to-right and top-to-bottom formats. Textbooks for mathematics, science, engineering, and social studies, short messages, and reports usually use the left-to-right format. Newspapers, novels, and textbooks for the Japanese language usually use the top-to-bottom format. On the computer screen, we usually use the left-to-right format. There is a section about that in the Wikipedia (but with very simple descriptions...): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_writing_system#Direction_of_writing > > (3) Manpage encoding issue > > > > Note that Japanese manpage use EUC-JP, not UTF-8, as its encoding so > > far. > > OK. Bug#443118: hex-a-hop: [INTL:ja] Japanese translation prepared
Package: hex-a-hop Version: 0.0.20070315-5 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Hi hex-a-hop maintainers, Japanese translation (ja.po) for hex-a-hop is prepared. Although only 142 out of 213 messages are translated, the translation contains all of the help text, most of important information messages, and all of the manpage text. Also, I have made sure that most of the translated messages are displayed correctly in the game screen. Sorry for being so late. You know, the Japanese language is so different from western languages on the point that Japanese don't use spaces between words. Since this game uses spaces in messages in a special way, for line breaks and paragraph breaks, I had to test and check the displayed messages locally before sending the translation as a bug report. Also, this was the first time for me to translate a game and I chose terms carefully... :-) As a translator to an exotic language, I must report some points below, especially as a reply to Jens's mail[1]: (1) The leading spaces. > > There are several strings which are identical except for a single > > space at the beginning. Do we really need to translate them again, or > > is there a better way to handle this situation? > > > > For example: > > > > #: hex_puzzzle.cpp:2659 > > #, c-format > > msgid "Anti-Ice: %d" > > > > #: hex_puzzzle.cpp:2669 > > #, c-format > > msgid " Anti-Ice: %d" > > A solution would be to create the second string using a hardcoded space > followed by the translation of "Anti-Ice: %d". Is this valid? Does it > make sense? The leading " " of " XXX" is only used as a margin to put the message "XXX" away from the edge of the screen. Splitting " XXX" into " " and "XXX" and marking the latter for translation may be good. It does make sense. OTOH, the leading " " of level names " XXX" is used to adjust the vertical location of level name labels. Since the length of the translated label name (and the number of required lines) is different between languages, inserting " " at the head of the message or not should be left to translators' choice. (2) Formatting of the help page It would be good to put some margins on both sides of the help text. Also, the centering of the help text is a little bit ugly. In Japanese, paragraph text is usually right-aligned. (3) Manpage encoding issue Note that Japanese manpage use EUC-JP, not UTF-8, as its encoding so far. Hi Bart, From: Bart Martens Subject: Bug#390868: review orpheus 1.5-7 Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2007 21:38:26 +0200 > http://mentors.debian.net/cgi-bin/sponsor-pkglist?action=details;package=orpheus > > There's a newer upstream release. Maybe you want to replace your > package at mentors. Thank you very much for reviewing. In fact, the man who reported the new upstream release as Bug#411993 was me. :-) I've already prepared for 1.6-1 locally; I did not include the new upstream release to the version uploaded to mentors.debian.net only because the version 1.5-7 already had many changes. However, if you like seeing 1.6-1 in sid instead of 1.5-7, I'll obey you. :-) Many thanks, -nori pgpBtrKJfFd06.pgp Description: PGP signature
