Bug#845709: genisoimage version 9:1.1.11-3 : Misreads configuration file .genisoimagerc
I have installed genisoimage version 9:1.1.11-2, this correctly reads the .genisoimagerc file. I have also installed 9:1.1.11-2 of wodim and cdrkit-doc. However I do not use these to generate any El Torito boot image. I hope that this helps. Genisoimage is very useful, however, it would be even better if it were to correctly read the .genisoimagerc file, as stated in the man pages with best regards from Richard Betham
Bug#845709: genisoimage: Mis-reads configuration file .genisoimagerc
I attach hereto a copy of the configuration file .genisoimagerc, in case the EOL string is odd and relevant to the misreading. with best regards from Richard Betham COPY=home/rb/private.txt PUBL=Richard Betham PREP=Richard Betham SYSI=Linux/Debian

Bug#839254: Add a detached signature file for the bible.rawtext file, please
Source: bible-kjv Version: 4.29 There is no signature for the file called bible.rawtext , except that it is signed as part of the package. However, some future maintainer of the package might not wish to take full responsibility for the text. Somebody might even write a package to generate HTML output from the bible.rawtext file. I suggest that there should be a detached signature file, containing one, or more, digital signatures, to confirm the text as correct. That would reduce the chances of errors being introduced into the text. Thank you very much for maintaining the package known as bible-kjv. with best regards from Richard Betham
Bug#836120: texlive-latex-base: [landscape] option of \documentclass
Package: texlive-latex-base Version: 2014.20141024-2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I began my landscape-test.tex file with: \documentclass[10pt,landscape,a4paper]{article} I gave the commands: latex landscape-test.tex xdvi landscape-test.dvi . A new window opened in portrait shape. It displayed some of the file. There was a red border outlining an oblong, taller than it was wide. I would prefer a landscape shaped window, displaying an area wider than it is tall. I would prefer that the red outline also be wider than it is tall. I had asked for "landscape" as advised in the book "A Document Preparation System LATEX USER'S GUIDE AND REFERENCE MANUAL" by Leslie Lamport I attach copies of the file landscape-test.tex and landscape-test.fls . The latter was produced later when I used the -recorder option. -- Later, I gave the command: dvips landscape-test.dvi . This generated a file called landscape-test.ps. I gave the command: okular landscape-test.ps . This opened a window displaying a portrait document. I required a landscape document. -- I tried using pdflatex instead, that correctly produced a landscape output, as seen using okular. Thank you very much for maintaining "latex", I find it very useful. with best regards from Richard Betham ## minimal input file landscape-test.tex ## other files landscape-test.fls ## List of ls-R files -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1175 May 18 20:12 /var/lib/texmf/ls-R lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Oct 21 2014 /usr/share/texmf/ls-R -> /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Dec 2 2014 /usr/share/texlive/texmf- dist/ls-R -> /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXLIVEDIST lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Dec 2 2014 /usr/share/texlive/texmf- dist/ls-R -> /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXLIVEDIST ## Config files -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 475 May 18 20:12 /etc/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3972 May 18 20:12 /var/lib/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Dec 2 2014 /usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg -> /var/lib/texmf/updmap.cfg-DEBIAN -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3245 May 18 20:12 /var/lib/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat ## Files in /etc/texmf/web2c/ total 8 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 283 Oct 21 2014 mktex.cnf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 475 May 18 20:12 texmf.cnf ## md5sums of texmf.d ca40c66f144b4bafc3e59a2dd32ecb9c /etc/texmf/texmf.d/00debian.cnf -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.5 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages texlive-latex-base depends on: ii dpkg 1.17.27 ii tex-common5.03 ii texlive-base 2014.20141024-2 ii texlive-binaries 2014.20140926.35254-6 Versions of packages texlive-latex-base recommends: ii texlive-latex-base-doc 2014.20141024-2 texlive-latex-base suggests no packages. Bug#495184: wodim: --devices
Hi This bug seems to have been fixed by Debian/Wheezy, which has wodim version 9:1.1.11-2 . Please check whether it works for you under Wheezy. If so, then. I suggest that bug #495184, and perhaps some others, should be closed. I believe that the original submitter can do that through the bug tracking system. A similar bug has appeared in Jessie which has wodim version 9:1.1.11-3. This has been recorded as bug #833346 . Thank you for reporting the unhelpfulness of the error message, recorded as bug #597500, and bug #597501, error messages can be very important. with best regards from Richard Betham
Bug#833346: wodim: "wodim --devices" does not work
Hi Thank you, Thomas, for that. I have now tried the following commands, as root: ln -s /dev/sg0 /dev/scd0 ln -s /dev/sg1 /dev/scd1 ln -s /dev/sg2 /dev/scd2 ln -s /dev/sg3 /dev/scd3 . Then as normal user: wodim --devices . This produced the result: " wodim: Overview of accessible drives (2 found) : - 0 dev='/dev/scd1' rwrw-- : 'hp' 'DVD-RAM GHD0N' 1 dev='/dev/scd2' rwrw-- : 'HUAWEI' 'Mass Storage' - " So this seems to work. Bug#833346: wodim --devices" does not work
I have tried using wodim version 9:1.1.11-2 and libcap2:i386 version 1:2.22-1.2 , this failed as before. Later I re-installed Debian 7.9.0 (Wheezy) DVD1 in an old computer. the command line "wodim --devices" worked there, so did "wodim -scanbus" . This is consistent with my recollections the Wodim worked satisfactorily as part of Wheezy in my old computer. I hope that this is useful. My old computer has since failed to boot, probably it is worn out. with best regards from Richard Betham

" This was output on Standard Error I tried the same command as root, and on another machine, all with the same result. I tried "wodim -scanbus" with the same result. I would prefer that Wodim --devices would tell me what CD and DVD drives are connected. Eventually I used gui k3b, which used growisofs, successfully. Bug#777080: crashed when trying to load plugins
Package: gwenview Version: 4:4.8.4-2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I wished to create a calendar containing a picture which I had. The picture was in jpeg format. My computer has about 500 MB of memory, and was not connected to the Internet at the time. It was running KDE,but was somewhat slow. Under KDE, I launched gwenview from the "Kickoff Application Launcher". I selected the directory which contained the picture. I selected the picture. I selected the Menu item "Plugins". My computer displayed the picture. The Menu showed a sub-menu, which contained the word "Loading". After a short delay the gwenview window disappeared. After another delay, another window appeared, apparently it was the crash handler. I tried this on several occasions, re-booting the computer between them. Eventually, I tried using the crash handler window to generate a bug report. That failed, however I saved a copy of the report to file, it generated a file called gwenview-20150203-183132.kcrash, I attach a copy. Then I used "reportbug" in the konsole window to produce this report, which I will copy to another computer to send it as an e-mail. Thank you very much for maintaining gwenview. Link > -- > F8AC 04D5 0B9B 064B 3383 C3DA AFFC 96D1 151D FFDC Thank you very much for your e-mail, It is useful to know that I must remove the ":" and whatever follows, from the end of the package name, so that it will be suitable input for reprepro FilterList. I have got my Makefile script file to work well enough to generate an image for a cdrom which seems to be acceptable to apt-cdrom, and to apt-get. However, when I run my script again, trying to use the cdrom as one of the sources, reprepro generates an error message and aborts. The text of the error messages is copied into the attached file called "make.op.txt" I have tried various variants of the update file, using: Method: cdrom:[...] Method: cdrom://[...] Method: cdrom:"[...]" I did not put "...", I put "Debian~Wheezy~in~part~as~at~2014-11-29+21:20:36". I prefer to have spaces in the name, but that seemed to cause trouble. I attach copies of various files which seem relevant. Please advise me of the correct format for the line in the file conf/updates, which starts: Method: cdrom:... I am attempting to write a make script file, to cause reprepro, to put onto cdrom, some of the packages which are installed in the computer which runs the script file. I have succeeded in using Method: file:/... in my update file. Bug#769577: how to configure reprepro to make repository of what is installed on host
Package: reprepro Version: 4.16.0-1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I wish to be able, conveniently to make a repository containing the packages which: + are installed on my computer; and + are not included in the Official DVD, (or are a later version). I prefer the new repository to contain the versions of packages which are installed in my computer. These have always been tested, even if not much. I wish to copy the result to a CD-R, or to a DVD, which should be acceptable to apt-cdrom, and to apt-get. (apt-move used to do almost this.) It is not obvious from the documentation of reprepro, how to do this. I have started trying to make a script file to do this. Does anybody else want it? Has anybody already written one? Is there an easy way to make a repository containing only installed packages? Bug#757418: kmail: fails to fetch SSL certificates for pop
Package: kmail Version: 4:4.4.11.1+l10n-3+b1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I installed kmail on Debian 7.5 and lxde. I configured it to pop mail from my pop account(s). I tried to download e-mail. kmail failed to fetch and recognise the SSL certificates required. The error message showed the certificate (after a few clicks) of the server, but did not show the CA certificates. I tried several times, with and without kleopatra installed. the server happens to vps-unixweb4.totalhostingplus.com . I used iceweasel to obtain the server certificate, then used openssl x509 to display it. It contained a URL so I used wget to obtain a copy of the certificate of the intermediate CA the Server certificate obtained by iceweasel has the same fingerprint as the server certificate display by kmail. According to "openssl verify ...", the intermediate certificate validly signs the server certificate. It would be nice if in future kmail can handle a chain of certificates for pop over SSL and using TLS. Bug#752692: lxde exits and re-tries several times, without letting me login
The computer which I was using did not have an ethernet card, nor Wi-Fi. I have since doubled the amount of memory in it to about 380 Mega Bytes. I wiped the hard disk drive, and re-installed Jessie 20140616. I obtained a similar result, notwithstanding the increase in memory capacity. So, I wiped the hard disk drive again, and installed Wheezy, Debian 7.5.0 DVD-1 + DVD-2 + DVD-3. Again selecting Advanced -> Alternative Desktop -> Lxde. For some reason the system installed 4 packages from DVD-2. Anyway, it worked. It is slow, but it works. I do not know what those four packages from Wheezy DVD-2 are. I hope that this is useful, or more to the point, that Jessie Lxde will work for people who cannot afford new computers. with best regards from Richard Betham -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#698455: fails to display JPEG comment, metadata
Package: gwenview Version: 4:4.4.5-2 I am running Squeeze on an old desktop computer. I attach a file showing versions of some of the packages installed in my desktop computer. I used gwenview to look at some old pictures which have jpeg, comments, (some seem to have more them one comment block). These comments were probably made using wrjpgcom. I hoped that gwenview would display the pictures and the comments. It displayed the pictures, but not the comments. I tried clicking on a picture to display only that one picture. I clicked on the Information tab on the side-bar, it showed 'Meta Information' followed by some Exim data. below that it showed 'Description' followed by a large blank space. I wished to see the jpeg comment. I tried using Plugins -> Images -> Metadata -> Edit_Captions... this showed the first part of the comment. I tried using command rdjpgcom to read the comment, and saw the whole comment. I tried it on some more recent pictures annotated by using gwenview, version 1.4.2-5+b1 . gwenview version 4:4.4.5-2; it failed to display the JPEG comments. Bug#679022: does not state domain of unauthenticated/unsigned packages
I have copied the directory trees /media/cdrom0/pool , and /media/cdrom0/dists to a new directory /wheezy/. I have altered /etc/apt/sources.list to: deb file:///wheezy/ wheezy contrib main . Then I gave command : aptitude install ttf-dejavu . It gave the same result as before. It failed to state that these packages were in my machine. I would like to know where unsigned-for packages are before I decide whether to install. Bug#678990: does not state domain of unauthenticated/unsigned packages
On second thoughts: When a lot of packages are asked for, it would be better if apt were to state the domain names (and perhaps the dist names) of the unsigned-for packages. This would serve my purposes adequately, provided that the information is available before I decide to proceed with installaion of unsigned packages. Bug#679022: does not state domain of unauthenticated/unsigned packages
Package: aptitude Version: 0.6.7-1 I am testing debian-testing-i386-DVD-1.iso . I gave command: aptitude install ttf-dejavu . the response included " The following NEW packages will be installed: ttf-dejavu ttf-dejavu-extra{a} 0 packages upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/3530 kB of archives. After unpacking 6795 kB will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n?]" I responded "Y " It responded "WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed!" It did not tell me where these packages would come from. I would like to know the domain names of the repositories, and possibly the dist names BEFORE I decide whether to proceed with the installation. In command-line mode, perhaps a list on domain names and 'dists' is best. In interactive mode, where aptitude displays a list of unsigned packages, perhaps it could show the domain name and 'dist' for each package. If the packages are on my hard disk drive, or on a CD-ROM in my computer, then I can make a decision. If the packages are elsewhere, accessible only over the Internet, then I require a digital signature. I had edited the file /etc/apt/sources.list, its contents are: debfile:///media/cdrom0/ wheezy contrib main . If people update their computers over Wi-Fi links, then the digital signature on the Release package is important. I have filed a bug report about this as a bug in package 'apt', Bug#678990 . However, if 'apt' is altered, then perhaps 'aptitude' should also be altered. Thank you very much for maintaining 'aptitude', I find it very useful. Bug#678990: does not state URL of unauthenticated/unsigned packages
Package: apt Version: 0.9.5.1 I am testing code on the debian-testing-i386-DVD-1.iso, as it was on 2012 06 11. I gave the command: apt-get install ttf-dejavu . It output some info, including " The following NEW packages will be installed: ttf-dejavu ttf-dejavu-extra " It did not state where it would obtain these packages from. It asked me whether to proceed. I answered "y". It replied " WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! ttf-dejavu-extra ttf-dejavu Install these packages without verification [y/N]?" I would prefer that it tell me where these packages will come from, if I were to ask it to proceed. I would like it to tell me BEFORE I ask it to proceed. If it will obtain the packages from my hard disk or from a local CR-ROM, then I can make a decision. But if these packages are to come over the Internet, then I require a valid signature, before proceeding. Please alter apt-get to give the user/sys-admin this necessary information BEFORE he decides whether to proceed with the install. This will become more important when it becomes common-place to install over Wi-Fi, using Wi-Fi 'hotspots'. I had edited /etc/apt/sources.list, it contains: debfile:///media/cdrom0/ wheezy contrib main . Bug#652929: -n -R ... duplicates filenames of slides of subgalleries
Package: llgal Version: 0.13.16-3 Severity: minor When llgall runs with command-line options ...-n -R ... it does not correctly name the "slides" which represent subgalleries. Where there are several sub-galleries, then the slides pointing to them all have the same name (which is 'slide_.html'). Thus some of them are over-written by the last one. An example of my command line is: llgal --nc -n --sx 1200 --sy 900 -R --cc --gencfg local I attach a copy of the 'llgalrc' file which it generated. I also attach a copy of the file ~/.llgal/llgalrc I attach a copy of an 'index.html' file produced by llgal. The index.html file has several 'Open subgallery ...' boxes, but they all link to 'slide_.html'. This 'slide_.html' has a link to the last mentioned subgallery. It would be better if, each 'slide' which points to a sub-gallery were to have a name like that of the sub-gallery which it points to. A work-around is to refrain from using the '-n' command-line option, and alter the llgalrc file. The change needed to the file is: replace 'make_slide_filename_from_filename = 1' with 'make_slide_filename_from_filename = 0' I suggest that you should ask the author to alter the perl code, so that it will generate correct filenames for slides which point to galleries. Bug#296765: superset of packages
Perhaps you should use apt-proxy. If so, then probably you should use it (or several instances of it) to maintain several different mirrors. You do not wish to mix old Knoppix with Squeeze, in case a client uses a package which is not compatible with its variant of operating system. There is more information at http://packages.debian.org/lenny/apt-proxy . If you wish to use it, then you had better keep a copy of the source code. Bug#631847: mirror signed by distro's key
Package: apt-move Version: 4.2.27-1+b5 Severity: wishlist I usually enter the following commands: exec /bin/su - aptitude update apt-get update apt-move get apt-move move apt-move delete apt-move packages apt-move sync aptitude safe-upgrade exit I have aptitude version 0.4.11.11-1~lenny1 and aptversion 0.7.20.2+lenny1 . I would like the partial mirror made by apt-move to be signed by a generally trusted key for example Debian's archive signing key. When apt-move makes a partial mirror in /mirrors/debian/ it does not put a digital signature for it. A script file could be written, to copy the signatures and other files from /var/lib/apt/lists/ to a virtual mirror, linked to the mirror made by apt-move. Thus a virtual partial mirror, signed for by the distro's key could be formed. Alas some files signed for would be absent form the partial mirror. ___ I use apt-move to maintain a mirror for my private use. I sometimes copy it to CD-R to make it available to another of my computers. I might even lend it to somebody else. The amount of software is so large that I cannot get it all (with source code) onto one CD-R. So I will have to use a USB memory stick. If I use a USB memory stick, then it would be useful to have it signed by the archive key used by my supplier (which happens to be debian). Without a signature, it would be difficult to detect an unreleased file which got into the memory-stick by mistake. Is there already a simple way of copying these files into a suitable directory tree which can be referred to in the file /etc/apt/sources.list in the recipient computer? ___ I have started writing a perl script file to copy the files from /var/lib/apt/list/ to achieve this. ___ I attach a copy of my /etc/apt/sources.list file. Bug#597727: link from 'slideshow (frame)' to 'index', keeps both panes.
Package: imageindex Version: 1.1-1 I used imageindex to make some html files around my jpeg files. It worked, but is not quite right. I pointed my browser (konqueror) at the index.html file, and clicked on the link called 'slideshow view (frames)' , it worked satisfactorily so far, the new view was divided into two panes. Then I clicked on the link called 'index' , this brought me back to the index page, however unfortunately the index page was then shown as one of two panes (the other pane still showing several thumbnail pictures.) I then clicked on the link called 'slideshow view (frames)' again, the resulting view was divided into three panes, the two on the left each showed the thumbnails, the pane on the right showed a picture correctly. When I follow the link called index, I would like then to see the index page alone, without the left pane which shows thumb nails. I suggest that the perl code of imageindex should be corrected. A work around is, to right click on the pane which shows the index, and select 'Frame', then select 'Open in This Window' . Bug#588928: can not disable touchpad tap-for-click function
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics Version: 0.14.7~git20070706-3 I tried to use the touchpad on my laptop to move the cursor from one place on the screen to another, by sliding my finger-tip over the surface of the touchpad. The computer behaved as though I had clicked the mouse (or touchpad) button which I had not. The above fault happens often but not always. When my finger-tip is dry, the error occurs. I can sometimes work-around the fault by wetting my finger tip. I do not require the effect of clicking on the button, except when I press it. How can I disable the feature which pretends that I have clicked on the mouse (or touchpad) button, when I have not done so? ( My computer (in GUI mode) sometimes behaves as though I failed to release a key.) ( Rarely (not in GUI mode), the arrow and home keys fail to work till re-boot, but most keys do work.) My Computer, Mitac 6020, does not run acpi. I attach a copy of output from dmesg when running kernel version 2.6.26-2-686 . The command synclient -l produces the response:" Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?" on stderr. the same command give as root produces the same response. I tried adding :" SHMConfig on" immediately after:' Section "InputDevice"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf' . The result was that xorg did not start when the computer rebooted, kdm started (according to ps) but I could not see the display on tty7. - I attach a copy of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf which I have. Bug#509441: computer locks up during down-load
Package: ppp Version: 2.4.4rel-8 Computer fails to respond to mouse, keyboard, and even to when attempting to download a web page e.g. http://www.uk.debian.org/ . I am trying to get Etch to run in an old computer, which has about 361 Mega-bytes of SDRAM. It uses an external modem to dial into an ISP. It uses a simple shel script which calls pon, I attach a copy of the shell script, and a copy of the called file. The bugs appears when that ISP is Entanet using dial in number 0845 6040104. It seem to dial in successfully, I attach a copy of the ppp dialogue. However, then I tried to use Epiphany to download a web page e.g. http://www.uk.debian.org/ . The system downloaded some of the page, and displayed as much as would fit in the window. The computer then did not respond to any of the controls -- keyboard, mouse. It just froze, or locked-up. Eventually the "OH" light on the modem went out, I took this as my cue to push the power switch, and hold it in, till it switched off the power. I tried several times with variations. first using Iceweasel; then Iceweasel and squid; then wget. Iceweasel, with or without squid, caused the computer to lock up. Wget sometimes caused it to lock up. Downloading a smaller webpage instead usually worked, except that the pictures did not get displayed. Workaround; I tried using various different ISPs, system worked with all of these others. Knoppix version 5.1.1 live CD, running in the same hardware works, even on the Entanet dial up line, but slowly. versions; I attach a list of versions of some of the packages in my system. It is Etch as installed plus a few Etch packages which were not installed as default. These were all updated by aptitude update, and then aptitude upgrade on 20 December 2008. I attach output from reportbug, which seems to contain at least one error (from address). Bug#327867: apt-move sync downloads *.tar.gz which I already have on CD-ROM
Package: apt-move Version: 4.2.24-1.1 I run debian Sarge, but with some packages upgraded to Etch . The reason for this upgrade to Etch is so that apt-move sync will download the source code files. I attach files of output from the dpkg -l command to show what I have installed. As root I gave the following commands: # aptitude update # aptitude upgrade # apt-get update # apt-move get # apt-move move # apt-move packages # apt-move sync I want it to down load and mirror the source code of tha packages which I have installed, EXCEPT FOR what I already have on CD-ROM and elsewhere. I hoped that it would download the source code of the latest versions of what I have installed, EXCEPT FOR what I already have on CD-ROM and elsewhere. What it does is begins to download files including the ones which I already have. It takes ages to do it because it tries to download all the relevant *.tar.gz files. I use ppp dial-up connection. I do not want it to download the *.orig.tar.gz files, because I already have them on CD-ROM. I would like my mirror to hold only the update code, so that it will all fit onto one CD-ROM. I attach copies of the configuration files: /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt-mov.conf Please advise how I can download the relevant *.dsc and *.diff.gz files, without also downloading the *.orig.tar.gz . Thank you for the update to apt-move 4.2.24-1.1 , it seems to download the latest code now. Bug#357127: kdm greeter does not show list of users
Package: kdm Version: 3.3.2-1sarge1 Severity: minor The Greeter of kdm should show a list of users who may log in. It did not do so for me, I attach a copy of the file /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc as it was. (It is now called kdmrc.bu .) The sub-window which should have shown user names (and possibly some pictures) was empty, and narrow. I tried using $ man kdm but that did not work. I tried installing doc-linux-html (version 2005.04-1), that did not help either. So I changed two lines in the file /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc as folllows: change from: SelectedUsers= ShowUsers=NotHidden to : SelectedUsers=rb,guest ShowUsers=Selected . This works alright, but now I have to alter the file kdmrc whenever I add a new user. Bug#327867: apt-move sync does not get source files
Package: apt-move Version: 4.2.23 I have found a sort of a solution. Instead of using apt-move sync I can use apt-move listbin repo | egrep -v All | apt-move mirrorsrc ; this puts the .dsc , .dif.gz , and .orig.tar.gz files into /mirrors/debian/.apt-move/archive/ . However this also downloads the *.orig.tar.gz files, so I used to stop it, so that I avoid running up a large phone bill, and avoid overloading the security.debian.org server. Please will somebody remove the *.orig.tar.gz files from security.debian.org , I already have them on CD , and those who have not can get them from ftp.uk.debian.org. and elsewhere. What I really want is that "apt-move sync"will work as I think that it should, so that I may let somebody else copy my copy of the code. The X server, WWWoffle, and, printer file formats all caused me great trouble when installing woody. But with Sarge I had the benefit of experience. My first mistake with sarge was to try to upgrade from Woody by download. After I had downloaded aptitude and perl, I discovered that it was necessary to update all the installed packages except for one. It would cost more to do that than have the CDs mailed to me. So I had the CDs mailed to me. The installer tried to set-up and use e-mail before I was ready. I was installing from CD, so had not connected my Sarge installation to the network. Getting the X server to work caused difficulty. It failed to tell me why it would not work. So (as a non-prividged user) I gave the command startx, this also failed, but at least it told me that there was a fault relating to the mouse. My prior experience with RedHat was my clue to try startx. My prior experience with Woody helped me to (as root) select /dev/psaux for the mouse. This computer does not have a mouse, it has alittle gren thing amongs the keys, and two switches to click with. The Error message obtained by starting kdm, with incorrect mouse settings, resulted in a error message which "strongly recommended" use of reportbug. So I tried using reportbug, it did not seem to do anything. Perhaps I should remind you that I did not have e-mail working at that point on this computer. I have e-mail still on my old Redhat setup on an old computer. I had not set up ppp. I do not know whether you will ever get any output from that bugreport. I will probably enjoy using Debian. However I will not recommend it to any who has no experience of Linux. Since starting to fill in the form , I installed kernel-image 686, and forgot to install its pcmcia modules. uname -a : Linux debian 2.4.27-2-686 #1 Mon May 16 17:03:22 JST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.
