Bug#451010: emacs22-common: Should conflict with ilisp

 added to the emacs22-common package.

So do you know if this is just a conflict with the ilisp in unstable
(that was withdrawn), or also a conflict with earlier versions, and if
the former, do you happen to know which versions conflict?

The ilisp version that was withdrawn from unstable is the same version
that still is in stable. The package had been orphaned in December
2004, last QA upload was in October 2005.

I'll fix this. Thanks for pointing out.

Furthermore, there's no information about the copyright of
the files in the util-linux/ directory.

debian/copyright file says,

Bug#452640: unnecessarily drags in debian-archive-keyring and gnupg

2007-11-24 Thread Robert Millan
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.9
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

apt depends on debian-archive-keyring, but it doesn't really need it, since
/usr/share/apt/debian-archive.gpg is already part of the apt package.

In turn, debian-archive-keyring depends on gnupg, which is only needed to
make apt-key useful. But apt-key doesn't provide essential functionality
in apt, since the debian archive key is already loaded. For performing the
actual verification, gpgv should be enough.

See attached patch (also corrects a minor mistake in a gpgv method error
message).

Bug#451848: doesn't pick right BACKLIGHT_CONTROL for p7120 laptop

2007-11-24 Thread Brice Goglin
forwarded 451848 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13374
thank you

 Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
 Version: 2:2.2.0-1
 Severity: normal

This is kind of a followup to #439744. I decided to open a new bug
report since the problem, while related, is different. And less bad.

With this new version of the X server, my backlight, which had been
working with version 2:2.1.1-4, went back on the fritz, same symptoms
 as described in #439744.

But when I took a look at commit 43fbc547786cf26514f95bce79fab58a66c291bf,
I saw that they'd generalised things and made the backlight control
method used be configurable with xrandr. After I ran this, my backlight
 worked as expected:

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL legacy

So I hope that the X server can be taught to use legacy mode by default
for this model of laptop, instead of the current default, which I think
 is probably native mode.

(Is there some way I can configure this in xorg.conf?)

Forwarded upstream at the URL above.

2007-11-24 Thread René Mérou
I tryed to remove packages with dependencies like solfeo or edu-music and it

one secondary problem. The work stops at that package asking for some
questions.

But i was not able tu start kdm in that iso so i started one new from zero,

I left the work all the night and now i find it was stoped one more time in

This one is a package-specific bug. hplip should either predepend on
psmisc or (preferably) find a different way of doing that using only
essential (?) packages (for example use of start-stop-daemon perhaps).

I don't know what dependencies are causing the inclusion of hplip in
your image, but you should somehow work around that package bug.

Bug#452639: e2fsprogs: -m flag limited in mke2fs and tune2fs

2007-11-24 Thread Sam Hocevar (Debian packages)
Package: e2fsprogs
Version: 1.40.2-1
Severity: normal

mke2fs and tune2fs use strtod() for the -m argument, apparently
allowing for fine-tuning the -m flag. However they call e2p_percent
with this argument, which is implicitely cast to an int, therefore
losing anything after the decimal separator.

Given that e2p_percent is used in a few other places, I am not
sure which patch to suggest: it looks to me like the whole function
could be replaced with return (unsigned int)(percent * base / 100.0);
because the double type has enough precision to care for all cases,
but that would render the function pretty useless.

The feature is really interesting with today's disk sizes. Currently,
on a 800 GB partition, I can only reserve 0 GB or 8 GB for root, nothing
inbetween.

Bug#452638: Ampache has an exorbitant number of dependencies.

2007-11-24 Thread Ben Aultowski

Package: ampache

Ampache is a web-based media server. But more importantly, it is a PHP script
run from a web server. I am building a headless media server, that uses
Ampache. Like most other servers, it will not have a monitor connected to it.
Ever. So why does install the ampache package require ttf-dejavu, x11-common,
defoma, libfreetype6 and the like? It's a PHP script! I don't need and X Server
and font engines running!

On a related note, why does ampache depended on apache? It can run on other web
servers, like lighttpd, with no problems.

Bug#452645: README.policy-rc.d is unclear and should provide example

2007-11-24 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: sysv-rc
Version: 2.86.ds1-38.1
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/share/doc/sysv-rc/README.policy-rc.d

README.policy-rc.d says that a policy-rc.d script should exit with 0 if the
action is allowed. However it does not explicitly state that this will override
the runlevel checks done by invoke-rc.d. This is quite surprising and should be
made more clear.

Actually, README.policy-rc.d should provide an example for a policy-rc.d script
that does nothing, i.e. that gives _exactly_ the same behaviour as if the
policy-rc.d script was not present.

Bug#452648: reportbug: Please support globbing in attachment prompt

2007-11-24 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: reportbug
Version: 3.39
Severity: wishlist

I would find it quite helpful if the attachment prompt supported globs.
This would make attaching multiple related files, such as patches or log
files, much easier.

Thank you,

Bug#452641: jetring-diff doesn't keep sigs associated with their packets

2007-11-24 Thread Jonathan McDowell
Package: jetring
Version: 0.09
Severity: important
Tags: patch

It seems that jetring-diff doesn't take account of the fact that each
signature packet is associated with a specific other PGP packet; as a
result displaying a diff results in all the new sigs being shown at the
end rather than displaying which uid/subkey etc they are for. This
strikes me as fairly important - when diffing keys you care about
whether a self sig is just another one on the uid or actually updating a
subkey binding, which currently it's hard to tell.

I think the attached patch solves the problem, though there's probably a
cleaner way to do it.

Bug#452652: [Priorities] please lower priority of dselect

2007-11-24 Thread Robert Millan
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

According to Policy s.2.5, packages with required priority are
necessary for the proper functioning of the system, that is to say, they
provide enough functionality to allow the sysadmin to boot and install
more software.

But dselect does none of that. It's just a frontend to dpkg and (optionally)
apt; and according to:

  - its own description: Many users find dselect intimidating and new users
may prefer to use `apt'-based user interfaces.
  - popcon (regular users): dselect=7209, aptitude=16399, apt=56340

not a very popular one.

I'd suggest lowering its priority to important, equiparating it to its
more popular equivalent aptitude.

I'm CCing the dselect/dpkg maintainers, in case they have an objection or
something to add.

2007-11-24 Thread Adeodato Simó
* Christopher J Peikert [Fri, 23 Nov 2007 19:48:45 -0800]:

 Package: amarok
 Version: 1.4.7-1+b1
 Severity: wishlist

I have upgraded to libgpod3 0.6.0 to get support for the new ipods, but I
can't seems to make amarok use it (probably because it depends on the
different soname libgpod2?). The new ipod works with gtkpod but not amarok
 (and I much prefer amarok).

It would be nice to have a rebuild of amarok that could use this new version
of libgpod (or advice on how to make it work if a rebuild is not necessary).

Hello Christopher, an automatic rebuild of amarok will be scheduled in
the near future, which will solve this issue.

Cheers,

Some of the packages in the standard seem to not be so command-line-only
oriented. For example, SELinux, openssh-client, NFS client, mime-support,
ispell, doc-debian, procmail, and so on. These could very well be used in a

Excellent - this is fine.

Thanks for your help with this one.

Before you make an upload to fix this one though, I've come across a
different perspective on the same issue, when not using autotools, just
using the CDBS make support (/usr/share/cdbs/1/class/makefile.mk). I
need to add this rule:

ifneq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE))
DEB_MAKE_ENVVARS=CC=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE)-gcc
endif

This change is needed with or without any patch to autotools-vars.mk.in
so I'm thinking of reporting a new bug and there's probably a similar
fix that can be made in makefile-vars.mk.in ?

It could be as simple as the attached patch.

What do you think - do both in the same hit or would you prefer a new
bug report and fix it separately?

With these two patches, I'm able to cross build all the CDBS packages
that I need for Emdebian.

Bug#452061: your mail

Hi,

Can you rm -rf $HOME/.config/audacious? This will make it reset to
defaults.

This usually fixes such bugs. Also, make sure you do not have any
non-Debian provided plugins installed. Also, the Debian provided
versions are correct.

Additionally, a backtrace would be useful, especially with debugging
symbols.

Bug#452348: [Pkg-hpijs-devel] Bug#452348: HPLIP doesn't mention new user-in-scanner-group requirement, other issues

 web browsers by default.

Might I suggest that you bring this up with them, ie the group/ individual who
set the default installation packages for lenny. We are the hplip
maintainers and users of hplip do expect the HP icon to be in the menu.

Furthermore, I think it is ridiculous to try to turn the default Debian
  installation into a stuff-that-integrates-with-Gnome-only desktop.

GNOME or not GNOME, I am talking about making the default Debian
installation - especially what appears in the menus - consistent. We
have thrown a lot of effort into this direction, and it is a shame to
see them spoiled by a giant HP icon in the default etch menu, that
spawns an ugly application a vast majority of users don't need.

Again, we don't set the default etch package set, we just maintain one of the
packages which has been selected for etch. If you don't want the HP icon in
the default etch installation, you need to make the argument to who sets the
default package that it shouldn't be included.

We won't break the package as we would then get a raft of valid bug reports
from hplip users wanting the icon to appear in their menu when they install
the package.

Bug#452654: skipping Priority: important packages

2007-11-24 Thread Robert Millan
Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.7
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

It'd be nice if there was some way to use debootstrap to create a base
Debian system without including all the cruft that lives in the
Priority: important package set (sure, you can clean it up by hand
afterwards, but it's a hassle).

Looking at how debootstrap is structured, I suppose the way to do this is
add a new variant like buildd or fakechroot.

Assuming it is, I'd be happy to provide a patch if you tell me:

  - What name to give this variant.
  - Which of the suite-specific /usr/lib/debootstrap/scripts/* scripts
(other than sid/lenny) should be modified to include this feature.

Bug#451187: man-db: allow passing warning options to groff

 extra arguments to groff (analogous to MANROFFSEQ and MANOPT);

I like this, thanks; I've applied your patch with a few small
modifications, and also added documentation of it to man(1). If you want
to check this out, install bzr and run:

  bzr get http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~cjwatson/bzr/man-db/trunk/

   * add a command, `manwe' (for ``MAN with Warnings Enabled''),
which will behave just like `man', but with (some) Groff
 warnings enabled;

While I appreciate the Silmarillion pun :-), I'm not very keen on
another command just for this. I would rather have something like 'man
--warnings'. Once I finish converting man to argp, it will be easier to
add options without trashing translations every time.

Please note that `manwe' would only work as intended if `man' is
to call `groff'. So, `-t' option may be necessary, e. g.:

 $ manwe -t ifconfig  /dev/null
standard input:63: warning: `Note:' not defined
 $

I just sent a patch to the groff mailing list to teach its nroff shell
script about -w and -W options. If this is accepted upstream, I'll also
apply it to the Debian groff package.

Note that this part is incorrect because, for better or worse, the

Note that the version above is given because I have had to downgrade

2.2.0-1, which crashes about 10 seconds after I log in. To recover I am
forced to downgrade the driver to 2.1.1-4 *and* to reboot the system.

The logs that I have of the crash are, I think of the subsequent

Bug#452557: ITP: bibutils -- interconvert various bibliographic data formats

Thanks for this, I've been looking for a packaged solution like that
since some time now!

Some suggestions for the long description though:

The bibutils program set interconverts between various bibliography
formats using a common MODS-format XML intermediate. For example, one
can convert RIS-format files to Bibtex by doing two transformations:
 RIS-MODS-Bibtex.

The proper capitalization for bibtex is BibTeX.

By using a common intermediate for N formats, only 2N programs are
 required and not N²-N.

This is pointless in the Debian package description: it's a common
technique which is pretty useless to mention IMO.

Besides, what I'm really missing in this description is a complete list
of the supported bibliographic formats. Can you please add it?

Thanks in advance! Cheers.

I am not sure if this is a bug with xserver-xorg-video-intel or xserver-xorg.

When I try to switch to a virtual console (ctrl-alt-F?) I get only a blank
 screen.
The monitor goes into power save mode.

I am still able to type and login and run commands - blindly.

If I do not start X or kdm at boot I get a normal login prompt and can see
 fine.

Once I start X, I can not switch back to any virtual console.
 Even after killing X.

Also on reboots I see nothing of the shutdown until the machine POSTs.

Do you have something like intelfb or vesafb kernel modules loaded for
the framebuffer text console?

I guess this worked with earlier xserver-xorg-video-intel? 2:2.1.1-4
previously in unstable? 2:2.1.99-1 from experimental?

I've been trying to get suspend to ram working on my Dell C400 laptop.
I've got things mostly working, except I get video corruption after
resuming. Most icons get black borders and konsole is almost all black.

I've read reports of similiar problems that were solved by adding
VBERestore to the proper section of of xorg.conf, but that option was
removed from recent versions of the i810 driver.

The usual way to work around suspend-related problems is to either pass
acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the kernel command line, or use vbetool post after
resume (some high-level suspending program can take care of this for
you, for instance with the uswsusp package).

Also, you might want to try with Intel 2.2 currently in unstable. You'll
have to upgrade xserver-xorg-core to unstable too, but it is definitely
worth testing it.

Great thanks, I forwarded this at the URL above. Feel free to add any
comment there if you think it could help. For instance, did you try to
interrupt in gdb, look at the backtrace, continue, reinterrupt, look
again, ... If you do that multiple times and compare the backtraces, we
might be sure that the server is stuck within a single function or so.

Your ability to reproduce the problem is a good point here. There are lots

Bug#444356: xserver-xorg: Virtual-terminal switch dumps cut/paste buffer onto window

Bill Brelsford wrote:
 Package: xserver-xorg

Copy text into the X cut/paste buffer (e.g. highlight with mouse).
Then switch to another virtual terminal (e.g. via alt-F8) and back
(e.g. via alt-F7). The copied text is erroneously pasted into the
 active X window.

I can't manage to reproduce this, maybe our input config or X
environment differs. Can you try without any xorg.conf (just move it
away)? Can you try with a different window manager, for instance after
startx /usr/bin/xterm instead of gdm/kdm+gnome/kde/...?

Bug#451954: Subtle problem with gettext.info

2007-11-24 Thread Santiago Vila
Hi.

I finally fixed the Debian package for gettext 0.17, but when I'm
going to install it, this is what happens:

Setting up gettext-base (0.17-1) ...
Setting up gettext (0.17-1) ...
install-info(/usr/share/info/gettext.info):
dpkg: error processing gettext (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255
Errors were encountered while processing:
 gettext

The gettext.info file from 0.16.1 was like this:

This is gettext.info, produced by makeinfo version 4.8 from
 gettext.texi.

 INFO-DIR-SECTION GNU Gettext Utilities
 START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY
 * gettext: (gettext). GNU gettext utilities.
 * autopoint: (gettext)autopoint Invocation.Copy gettext infrastructure.
 [...]

and gettext.info from 0.17 is like this:

 INFO-DIR-SECTION GNU Gettext Utilities
 START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY
This is gettext.info, produced by makeinfo version 4.11 from gettext.texi.

 * gettext: (gettext). GNU gettext utilities.
 * autopoint: (gettext)autopoint Invocation.Copy gettext infrastructure.
 * envsubst: (gettext)envsubst Invocation. Expand environment variables.

Is Debian install-info being picky about the new gettext.info, or is
this a bug in makeinfo 4.11 who generated the file?

[ Cc:ing dpkg developers, as Bug #451954 was very similar to this ].

Thanks.

Bug#452666: backupninja: postinst can fail as it unconditionally chmods a directory it doesn't ship

2007-11-24 Thread Micah Anderson

Hi,

 Hi,

 In

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backupninja/+bug/84079

it was reported that postinst can fail if there is no /etc/backup.d/.

This directory is not contained in the package, and the postinst
 unconditionally chmods it.

Adrien Cunin applied the following patch in Ubuntu to fix the problem.

 Please consider applying it.

Thanks for the report. This has already been fixed in the packaging, and
will be included in the next upload.

I agree with Robert; I have been asked quite a few times by friends (while
installing, what is the difference between standard and desktop system). This
change would make it a lot clearer what's what.

Resulting in people de-selecting standard if they choose desktop. Which
is not what we want.

Anyway, the description is not accurate. Standard includes everything
from documentation about Debian to a MTA to core localisation support,
to core SE linux support, to a portmapper (for NFS mounts), none of
which has much to do with the command line.

Bug#452660: nbd-client: please let init.d script only stop devices it started as well

2007-11-24 Thread Tilman Koschnick
Package: nbd-client
Version: 1:2.9.9-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

nbd-client's init.d script only starts (and optionally mounts) devices
that are configured in /etc/nbd-client. When called with the 'stop'
argument, it stops all nbd devices it can find, regardless of how they
were started in the first place.

I think the init.d script should only deal with devices it knows about;
if the admin or some other scripts start devices outside of the scope of
/etc/nbd-client, they should not be touched by /etc/init.d/nbd-client.

My usecase is having the rootfs on nbd, although there might be other
cases as well.

If you are willing to accept a patch implementing the change, I would be
happy to provide you one.

Cheers, Til

Bug#452657: tracker: please consider dropping dependency on qdbm

2007-11-24 Thread Pierre Habouzit
Package: tracker
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hi, you may want to have a look at http://bugs.debian.org/452074 for a
background on why.

Though, the same upstream author released a rework of QDBM named Tokyo
Cabinet, that just hit unstable. Here is a patch that does the following
thing (it needs some review and testing though, but it should be mostly
correct):

  1- it replace qdbm with tokyocabinet for the word index use ;
2- it converts qdbm indexes on the fly (this should be imperceptible
for the user, tokyo cabinet inserts around 10^6 records per
 second).

The plan would be to keep this in lenny, and remove qdbm use
altogether then.

Note that tokyocabinet has very interesting APIs to get records
directly where they are in memory, avoiding some very costly
malloc/free. And it has some other nitfy performance related features.
My patch is a direct translation of the qdbm code and does not uses
those, you may want to perform some later improvements.

My patch also assumes external tokyocabinet, and doesn't import the 4
files you'll need to use tokyo cabinet db's (though it's as easy as with
qdbm).

Cheers,

Hmm? I didn't quite catch the meaning of this change (I don't know gettext all
that well). I'm afraid didn't explain myself very clearly. The change I was
suggesting was adding, if possible, a new Choices string:

FileSystemProvider, RCSFileProvider, VersioningFileProvider

already there.

Bug#160743: testimonials 84

2007-11-24 Thread jarad bronson
I highly recommend this site to all.
This is the 2nd order I have placed. One by web and one over the phone.
Both were extremely pleasurable and fast.
The customer service folks were very accomodating and genuine, just like their software !!!
I have recommended this company to my family and friends
and they have purchased with the same experience of which I am writing.
I am lucky person to have found this site.

Keep up the great work and great prices too.

Then running myaudaciousaddpwd **/*.flac causes gazillion errors like these:

But today I deinstalled portmapper. It caused no complaints about
dependencies. Does D-Bus need portmapper?

I use only Debian-provided plugins.

Bug#452666: backupninja: postinst can fail as it unconditionally chmods a directory it doesn't ship

2007-11-24 Thread James Westby
Package: backupninja
Version: 0.9.4-6
Tags: patch

Hi,

In

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backupninja/+bug/84079

it was reported that postinst can fail if there is no /etc/backup.d/.

This directory is not contained in the package, and the postinst
unconditionally chmods it.

Adrien Cunin applied the following patch in Ubuntu to fix the problem.

Please consider applying it.

Thanks,

James

Bug#452672: backuppc: Support /var/run on tmpfs and use LSB logging

2007-11-24 Thread James Westby
Package: backuppc
Version: 3.0.0-4
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

The following patch is used in Ubuntu to do two things. The first
is to allow /var/run to be a tmpfs by making /var/run/backuppc in
the init script. The second is to use LSB logging.

Apologies to wrap two things up together.

Please consider applying it.

Thanks,

James
