Bug#451010: emacs22-common: Should conflict with ilisp
On 2007-11-24 02:33 +0100, Rob Browning wrote: Sven Joachim [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: As was noted several times ([1], [2], [3]), the ilisp[4] package is not compatible with Emacs 22 and prevents successful configuration of the emacs22 packages. Meanwhile, ilisp has been removed from unstable and testing, so this is not going to be fixed. To facilitate successful installation of emacs22 for the few users who have ilisp installed, an appropriate Conficts: ilisp should be added to the emacs22-common package. So do you know if this is just a conflict with the ilisp in unstable (that was withdrawn), or also a conflict with earlier versions, and if the former, do you happen to know which versions conflict? The ilisp version that was withdrawn from unstable is the same version that still is in stable. The package had been orphaned in December 2004, last QA upload was in October 2005. Bug#452640: unnecessarily drags in debian-archive-keyring and gnupg
Package: apt Version: 0.7.9 Severity: normal Tags: patch apt depends on debian-archive-keyring, but it doesn't really need it, since /usr/share/apt/debian-archive.gpg is already part of the apt package. forwarded 451848 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13374 thank you Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.2.0-1 Severity: normal This is kind of a followup to #439744. I decided to open a new bug report since the problem, while related, is different. And less bad. With this new version of the X server, my backlight, which had been working with version 2:2.1.1-4, went back on the fritz, same symptoms as described in #439744. But when I took a look at commit 43fbc547786cf26514f95bce79fab58a66c291bf, I saw that they'd generalised things and made the backlight control method used be configurable with xrandr. After I ran this, my backlight worked as expected: xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL legacy So I hope that the X server can be taught to use legacy mode by default for this model of laptop, instead of the current default, which I think is probably native mode. (Is there some way I can configure this in xorg.conf?) Forwarded upstream at the URL above. Brice -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#452639: e2fsprogs: -m flag limited in mke2fs and tune2fs
Package: e2fsprogs Version: 1.40.2-1 Severity: normal mke2fs and tune2fs use strtod() for the -m argument, apparently allowing for fine-tuning the -m flag. However they call e2p_percent with this argument, which is implicitely cast to an int, therefore losing anything after the decimal separator. Given that e2p_percent is used in a few other places, I am not sure which patch to suggest: it looks to me like the whole function could be replaced with return (unsigned int)(percent * base / 100.0); because the double type has enough precision to care for all cases, but that would render the function pretty useless. The feature is really interesting with today's disk sizes. Bug#452641: jetring-diff doesn't keep sigs associated with their packets
Package: jetring Version: 0.09 Severity: important Tags: patch It seems that jetring-diff doesn't take account of the fact that each signature packet is associated with a specific other PGP packet; as a result displaying a diff results in all the new sigs being shown at the end rather than displaying which uid/subkey etc they are for. This strikes me as fairly important - when diffing keys you care about whether a self sig is just another one on the uid or actually updating a subkey binding, which currently it's hard to tell. Bug#452652: [Priorities] please lower priority of dselect
Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: wishlist According to Policy s.2.5, packages with required priority are necessary for the proper functioning of the system, that is to say, they provide enough functionality to allow the sysadmin to boot and install more software. But dselect does none of that. It's just a frontend to dpkg and (optionally) apt; and according to: - its own description: Many users find dselect intimidating and new users may prefer to use `apt'-based user interfaces. - popcon (regular users): dselect=7209, aptitude=16399, apt=56340 not a very popular one. I'd suggest lowering its priority to important, equiparating it to its more popular equivalent aptitude. Bug#452625: amarok: rebuild for libgpod 0.6.0 (new ipod support)

Hi, Can you rm -rf $HOME/.config/audacious? This will make it reset to defaults. This usually fixes such bugs. Also, make sure you do not have any non-Debian provided plugins installed. Also, the Debian provided versions are correct. Additionally, a backtrace would be useful, especially with debugging symbols. On Saturday 24 November 2007, Josselin Mouette wrote: I don't understand why you are bringing this here... it sounds like something you need to take up with whatever group decides what goes into the default installation. This group currently consists of one person, who hasn't yet tried to think of the set of installed packages as a whole - like, installing two web browsers by default. Might I suggest that you bring this up with them, ie the group/ individual who set the default installation packages for lenny. We are the hplip maintainers and users of hplip do expect the HP icon to be in the menu. Furthermore, I think it is ridiculous to try to turn the default Debian installation into a stuff-that-integrates-with-Gnome-only desktop. GNOME or not GNOME, I am talking about making the default Debian installation - especially what appears in the menus - consistent. We have thrown a lot of effort into this direction, and it is a shame to see them spoiled by a giant HP icon in the default etch menu, that spawns an ugly application a vast majority of users don't need. Again, we don't set the default etch package set, we just maintain one of the packages which has been selected for etch. If you don't want the HP icon in the default etch installation, you need to make the argument to who sets the default package that it shouldn't be included. We won't break the package as we would then get a raft of valid bug reports from hplip users wanting the icon to appear in their menu when they install the package. Package: debootstrap Version: 1.0.7 Severity: wishlist Hi! It'd be nice if there was some way to use debootstrap to create a base Debian system without including all the cruft that lives in the Priority: important package set (sure, you can clean it up by hand afterwards, but it's a hassle). Looking at how debootstrap is structured, I suppose the way to do this is add a new variant like buildd or fakechroot. Assuming it is, I'd be happy to provide a patch if you tell me: - What name to give this variant. - Which of the suite-specific /usr/lib/debootstrap/scripts/* scripts (other than sid/lenny) should be modified to include this feature. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-5-amd64 Locale: LANG=ca_AD.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ca_AD.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#451187: man-db: allow passing warning options to groff
tags 451187 fixed-upstream thanks On Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 03:28:45AM +0600, Ivan Shmakov wrote: It was suggested that man-db gets one more command as well, to do the checking in a ``standard way''. So, I suggest the following: * add support for an MANROFFOPT environment variable to specify extra arguments to groff (analogous to MANROFFSEQ and MANOPT); I like this, thanks; I've applied your patch with a few small modifications, and also added documentation of it to man(1). If you want to check this out, install bzr and run: bzr get http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~cjwatson/bzr/man-db/trunk/ * add a command, `manwe' (for ``MAN with Warnings Enabled''), which will behave just like `man', but with (some) Groff warnings enabled; While I appreciate the Silmarillion pun :-), I'm not very keen on another command just for this. I would rather have something like 'man --warnings'. Once I finish converting man to argp, it will be easier to add options without trashing translations every time. Please note that `manwe' would only work as intended if `man' is to call `groff'. So, `-t' option may be necessary, e. g.: $ manwe -t ifconfig /dev/null standard input:63: warning: `Note:' not defined $ I just sent a patch to the groff mailing list to teach its nroff shell script about -w and -W options. If this is accepted upstream, I'll also apply it to the Debian groff package. --- man-db-2.5.0-debian-3/src/man.c 2007-11-24 01:54:12.0 +0600 +++ man-db-2.5.0-debian-3-manwe/src/man.c 2007-11-24 02:15:52.0 +0600 @@ -1522,6 +1529,7 @@ cmd = command_new_args (fmt_prog, file, pp_string, NULL); if (roff_device) command_arg (cmd, roff_device); + command_argstr (cmd, roff_opt); pipeline_command (p, cmd); } Note that this part is incorrect because, for better or worse, the interface to custom format programs doesn't support adding *roff options (see e.g. tools/mandb_fmt-script). Some suggestions for the long description though: The bibutils program set interconverts between various bibliography formats using a common MODS-format XML intermediate. For example, one can convert RIS-format files to Bibtex by doing two transformations: RIS-MODS-Bibtex. The proper capitalization for bibtex is BibTeX. By using a common intermediate for N formats, only 2N programs are required and not N²-N. This is pointless in the Debian package description: it's a common technique which is pretty useless to mention IMO. Besides, what I'm really missing in this description is a complete list of the supported bibliographic formats. Can you please add it? Thanks in advance! Bug#452376: xserver-xorg-video-i810: Screen corrupted after suspend to ram
Mark Small wrote: Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810 Version: 2:2.1.0-2 Severity: normal I've been trying to get suspend to ram working on my Dell C400 laptop. I've got things mostly working, except I get video corruption after resuming. Most icons get black borders and konsole is almost all black. I've read reports of similiar problems that were solved by adding VBERestore to the proper section of of xorg.conf, but that option was removed from recent versions of the i810 driver. The usual way to work around suspend-related problems is to either pass acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the kernel command line, or use vbetool post after resume (some high-level suspending program can take care of this for you, for instance with the uswsusp package). Also, you might want to try with Intel 2.2 currently in unstable. You'll have to upgrade xserver-xorg-core to unstable too, but it is definitely worth testing it. Bug#452011: Advocate DM: Asheesh Laroia

From the above, or other advocacy messages like it, it's not clear what a great job means -- is there something special he's done, or is it that whatever he's working on is particularly important, or is he remarkably consistent, or what? What's he actually done that's earnt your trust? What makes him special compared to the other folks who're helping Debian? What in particular about his work should people lurking on this list be trying to emulate if they want to be a DM or a DD? Cheers, aj signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#452666: backupninja: postinst can fail as it unconditionally chmods a directory it doesn't ship
Hi, Hi, In https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backupninja/+bug/84079 it was reported that postinst can fail if there is no /etc/backup.d/. This directory is not contained in the package, and the postinst unconditionally chmods it. Adrien Cunin applied the following patch in Ubuntu to fix the problem. Please consider applying it. Thanks for the report. This has already been fixed in the packaging, and will be included in the next upload. Micah signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Please consider applying it. I've applied this patch, it will be fixed in the next upload. Thanks for reporting this! Micah signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#452388: Standard system is confusing
Eddy Petrișor wrote: -Description: Standard system +Description: Command-line environment I agree with Robert; I have been asked quite a few times by friends (while installing, what is the difference between standard and desktop system). This change would make it a lot clearer what's what. Resulting in people de-selecting standard if they choose desktop. Which is not what we want. Anyway, the description is not accurate. Standard includes everything from documentation about Debian to a MTA to core localisation support, to core SE linux support, to a portmapper (for NFS mounts), none of which has much to do with the command line. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#452660: nbd-client: please let init.d script only stop devices it started as well
Package: nbd-client Version: 1:2.9.9-1 Severity: wishlist Hi, nbd-client's init.d script only starts (and optionally mounts) devices that are configured in /etc/nbd-client. When called with the 'stop' argument, it stops all nbd devices it can find, regardless of how they were started in the first place. I think the init.d script should only deal with devices it knows about; if the admin or some other scripts start devices outside of the scope of /etc/nbd-client, they should not be touched by /etc/init.d/nbd-client. My usecase is having the rootfs on nbd, although there might be other cases as well. If you are willing to accept a patch implementing the change, I would be happy to provide you one. Bug#452657: tracker: please consider dropping dependency on qdbm
Package: tracker Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi, you may want to have a look at http://bugs.debian.org/452074 for a background on why. Though, the same upstream author released a rework of QDBM named Tokyo Cabinet, that just hit unstable. Here is a patch that does the following thing (it needs some review and testing though, but it should be mostly correct): 1- it replace qdbm with tokyocabinet for the word index use ; 2- it converts qdbm indexes on the fly (this should be imperceptible for the user, tokyo cabinet inserts around 10^6 records per second). The plan would be to keep this in lenny, and remove qdbm use altogether then. Note that tokyocabinet has very interesting APIs to get records directly where they are in memory, avoiding some very costly malloc/free. And it has some other nitfy performance related features. My patch is a direct translation of the qdbm code and does not uses those, you may want to perform some later improvements. My patch also assumes external tokyocabinet, and doesn't import the 4 files you'll need to use tokyo cabinet db's (though it's as easy as with qdbm). I didn't quite catch the meaning of this change (I don't know gettext all that well). I'm afraid didn't explain myself very clearly. The change I was suggesting was adding, if possible, a new Choices string: FileSystemProvider, RCSFileProvider, VersioningFileProvider so that we could localise also those options, both in options list and in the Description. The latter strings were just an example of options string already there. Regards, Esko Arajärvi p.s. Maybe I should join the l10n-english list to catch these earlier. :-)
