Igualmente, no me pude conectar.

Help! I upgraded ssh, it doesn't work, I want to go back to an earlier version.
Foolish me: I'd been happily running ssh 1:2.2.0p1 on my Potato system, and then I upgraded to ssh 1:2.2.0p1-1.1. (I got both of those versions from unstable.) Well, that newer version doesn't work on potato, because it requires a newer libc. I don't care to upgrade libc, and ssh is now brokenly installed, and will not start. What's the simplest way for me to get a working ssh 2.2.0 server again? I would *think* the easiest way would be to scare up another copy of the 1:2.2.0p1 package, but I don't know where to find it. I tried building the 1:2.2.0p1-1.1 package from source, on the assumption that the version that I built would not require a newer libc, but configure complained that it Could not find working SSLeay / OpenSSL libraries, please install. I couldn't figure out how to get past that point (yes, I tried installed OpenSSL). So: any suggestions for how I can get SSH working again? Once upon a time, I heard Eric Hanchrow say Foolish me: I'd been happily running ssh 1:2.2.0p1 on my Potato system, and then I upgraded to ssh 1:2.2.0p1-1.1. Creating kernel packages with make-kpkg
Hi, I have created some kernel packages with make-kpkg and now I want to build the alsa- and pcmcia-modules for these kernels. For example I have two different kernel packages: kernel-image-2.2.17-mamba - This is a standard kernel with no additional patches kernel-image-2.2.17-adder - This is a kernel with a lot of additional patches I have created these two packages with make-kpkg --bzImage --flavour mamba --revsion 2.2.17-1 buildpackage and make-kpkg --bzImage --flavour adder --revsion 2.2.17-1 buildpackage First question: If I compile the alsa- and pcmcia-modules for the adder-package, are the compiled alsa- and pcmcia-modules working with the mamba-kernel-image, too? Or have I to compile two different alsa- and pcmcia-module-packages for each kernel package? Second problem: The kernel-image does install its modules in /lib/modules/2.2.17. But if I compile the additional modules (alsa and pcmcia) with this command: make-kpkg --flavour mamba --revision 2.2.17-1 modules the alsa- and pcmcia packages are installing their modules to /lib/modules/2.2.17-adder or /lib/modules/2.2.17-mamba. In that way I have no chance to create alsa- and pcmcia-packages for different kernel packages with the same kernel version. Is it correct that I don't need to specify the --flavour option when compiling the modules? And are these module packages compatible with all kernel 2.2.17 packages? -- Bye K

It doesn't *work* or it doesn't configure? You can force it to ignore any dependencies on the newer libc. It's worth a shot. It seems that many package maintainers set their requirements to whatever they had at the time they built that package because it would be a pain in the butt to actually check it against all of the older libc's. So, I've concluded that, when newer packages require a newer libc, it's sometimes a ruse. However, do NOT try to call their bluff if it's a critical package like ldso or something. Failing that, you can ftp to stable and get an older copy of ssh and force that to ignore dependencies on *older* libc's. Failing that dunno. But let me make a suggestion for the future: dpkg-repack. It makes a .deb file from any package that you've got on the system. This thing has SAVED MY ASS many, many, many times. What would be really cool is if it could let you specify a bunch of packages to automatically repack right before installing a new one. Know what I'm getting at here? So, I could tell repack that I want it to repack apache, apache-common, jserv, and ssh any time one of them is about to be upgraded or downgraded. So you'd always have fallback capability to the last working setup of them. Anyway good luck on ssh. - Joe

RE: sunrpc on port 111 and domain on port 53
Port 111 is the portmapper (for NFS and other RPC services) and port 53 is BIND (DNS). If you're not running NSF, you really don't need the portmapper for much (although you can protect it with TCP Wrappers), and you don't need BIND unless you're either providing name service for a domain, or running a caching name server for your own use. - Marc Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.moonkingdom.net/mwilson -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 19, 2000 12:02 AM To: Debian Subject:sunrpc on port 111 and domain on port 53 I'm making some efforts to tighten up security on my home server. What packages are they kept in? apt-get --purge remove bind (if you really are not using bind, --purge blows away config files!) as for portmap its in netbase which you cannot remove, so you can do several things: rm /etc/rcS.d/S41portmap chmod -x /etc/init.d/portmap (Permission denied error will be spewed to the console at bootup) edit /etc/init.d/portmap to add an exit 0 early on to prevent it from starting. dpkg-divert /sbin/portmap so the initscript will think its not really installed. there are more but you get the idea... fortunatly woody fixes this obnoxious defect and portmap is its own package which can be purged like any other. as for what they are, domain is DNS, and debian badly runs bind as root by default, bind has been responsible for many many root compromises in the past. don't run it unless you need to, and if you need to the only responsible way to run it (IMO) is in a chroot jail as a non-root uid. (such as named.named) portmap is used for RPC services, such as NFS, NIS, etc. if you don't need NFS or NIS you probably don't need portmap. -- Ethan Benson http://www.alaska.net/~erbenson/ pgpuKEvC4ILRZ.pgp Description: PGP signature

Help: Command to search replace word in file?
Hi, Is there a way from the console to use a grep like command to search a file for, say the word blue and replace it with red? The key is console and not within Vim, etc. I'm trying to set up a way to automate changing .Xdefault setups with a simple Bash script. Thanks, Jonathan
For those who want to switch wallpapers easily
Hi, This is trying to give something back to the Debian community which has already helped me a great deal. It's a small Bash script which allows you to easily switch backgrounds (root window/desktop). It's obviously for non-experts such as myself. It works, but if there's suggestions from the pros, I'd welcome it readily. xloadimage has to be loaded 1. I place all my images in /usr/local/pics (any directory will do). 2. I have a menu item which does a ls to an xmessage of the pics so I know what's there. 3. I then use sbg pic(substitute name) to switch backgrounds. The jpg can obviously be changed as well. Jonathan Here's the code for the Bash script named sbg: #! /bin/sh # Set root window background # Accepts file name as input file=$1 xsetbg /usr/local/pics/$1.jpg clear There's another, equally sipme one for colors named sbgc: #!/bin/sh # Sets root window background color # Accepts color as string color=$1 xsetroot -solid $1 clear

apt-move update skipping .debs

It seems to be working fine, except that when performing an apt-move update, a number of .debs are skipped, and not moved to the local mirror (/mirrors/debian). Other .debs, however, are moved to the local mirror properly. I've read the apt-move's manpage several times, yet cannot figure out what is causing these .debs to be skipped. According to apt-move's manpage, a file called /mirrors/debian/.exclude will cause files which match specified patterns to be skipped, but I have no such file in my /mirrors/debian directory. Additionally, apt-get -v exclude does not return any filenames of .debs to be excluded. As some of the skipped .debs are rather large ones, it is inconvenient that they are not moved into the local mirror (defeatng the point of having a local mirror in the first place). Am I missing an important step, or is there some reason that these .debs are not making it into the local mirror? TIA P.S. Please reply to me directly. Creating kernel package with IPSEC support
Hi, Finally I figured out that my last problem (Modules are not working and make menuconfig shows me an empty kernel menu) has something todo with the Freeswan-Patch. If I don't use it, all is working fine, but if I apply it to the kernel I have the mentioned problems. I have tried two ways to generate kernel-packages with IPSEC enabled: 1. Kernel in /usr/src/linux Freeswan in /usr/src/freeswan Run make menugo in /usr/src/freeswan and exit/save the dialog. The kernel is now patched and compiled. In /usr/src/linux I run the that make-kpkg command The resulting kernel is working sometimes but sometimes, as I said, it is not working because the modules can't be loaded (Haven't figured out, why this happens). And the kernel-source-package is corrupted. make menuconfig isn't working anymore. 2. Kernel in /usr/src/linux Freeswan in /usr/src/freeswan Run make patches in /usr/src/freeswan. The kernel is now patched and there are no error messages in the file out.kpatch. Then I try to run make menuconfig in /usr/src/linux but again it is not working. The menu is empty. Any hints how to apply this freeswan patch correctly? The normal way (1) as described in the documentation isn't working. -- Bye K
