Análisis jerárquico Esto no conozco. Re: Is Squeeze right for me? [Possible FAQ?]
Dne, 23. 11. 2009 00:44:40 je S. Fishpaste napisal(a): Someone mentioned the sheer volume of information that is often available to the Debian user. I can see how it's intimidating and confusing to the casual user as it is to even those of us that consider themselves perhaps a little more experienced but still learning non-the-less. Precisely. The trouble with the standard RTFM or Google is your friend answers is that, if you follow them to the letter, you'll find not one but, say, half a dozen different infos/posts/howtos that will appear as potential solutions to a casual user. Of course, one of those will not work in Lenny because it was Etch-specific, another will not work for, say, a DHCP-networked computer with NetworkManager, but only for static-IP machines, or vice versa, and so on. Problem is that, as a newbie, you won't know that in advance. You'll proceed by trial and error. (There's also the possibility that your issue is simply a brand new glitch/bug that hasn't made it to the various bug trackers yet, so all your research won't help you zilch.) Once a typical newbie has tried out all those suggestions and discovered that they don't work -- and even if he discovered that some actually do work -- he will have modified so many parts of his Debian install, that it may well be messed up. Which, for a complete newbie, may virtually spell messed up *beyond repair*. All a newbie or a casual user can do is change his attitude: start considering these obstacles/challenges not as pitfalls, but as opportunities to learn. Life's not perfect, but it's perfectible. I know that can be a problem for some people that want to use their own styles, but anyway, is just a matter of taste, has no relevance with your issue. Re: SATA disk drivers missing from Debian 5.0.3 network installer
Hi Frank, Thank you for your response. I am familiar with the BIOS option you are referring to because I've had to set it before on the HP ProLiant DL1XX servers, but this is an HP BL2x220c G5 blade and no such option exists. If I install directly from the DVD, which has the loadable kernel modules, the disks are properly recognized, which leads me to believe that the BIOS setting isn't the issue. This is the Debian Installer I used to install over the network. http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/debian-installer/i386/initrd.gz http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/debian-installer/i386/linux I also tried taking the libata.ko and ata_piix.ko modules from the initrd.gz that comes with the Debian 5.0.3 DVD 1 under the install.386 directory and loading them when the Debian Network Installer was sitting at the shell prompt, but I got. # insmod libata.ko insmod: error inserting 'libata.ko' : -1 Invalid module format The problem is that I will be doing all my installs over the network so I need for the Debian installer to recognize the SATA disks. Lost window manager and gnome-panel
About a month ago I installed testing amd64 on a brand new hard disk for my Thinkpad, planning on migrating from Jaunty to Debian. I kept my old Jaunty hard disk untouched. I used the Jaunty disk as a source of config files as I installed the applications I need, plus I wanted it available just in case my migration to Debian did not go well. After several days of installing and configuring things I suddenly lost metacity and gnome-panel. That is, upon rebooting I got a blank screen. Even without the window manager or gnome-panel you can right-click on the screen and create a launcher. I created a launcher for gnome-terminal. From the terminal I was able to start metacity and gnome-panel. However two days of poking failed to get metacity and gnome-panel to start automatically on rebooting. I just couldn't figure out where they started from. Eventually I had work I needed to get done, so I put the Jaunty hard disk back in the computer and left my migration to Debian for another day. That day arrived a few days ago. I decided start over from scratch. I used the netinst CD and reinstalled completely, reformatting the new disk. Until yesterday afternoon I spent my time installing and configuring as I did before. Everything was running great. I had just a couple problems left to resolve. Then I decided to reboot. And then it happened again - no metacity or gnome panel. Only this time I couldn't right-click on the desktop and create a launcher either. I could boot into Recovery Mode, but you can't start an X program from there. A local friend suggested to boot to Recovery Mode and then install XFCE. I did so. And when I rebooted I found the option to use XFCE instead of Gnome. When XFCE came up I had a normal desktop with window manager and panels. Yay! So at least this time around I am back and I have things running. I have XFCE fixed up to my taste, but I want Gnome back. I still can't log in to Gnome without losing the window manager and panels. So this long story boils down to two questions: 1) How can I fix Gnome? What part of the configuration starts metacity and gnome-panel when the user logs in? Note that I'll have to do this manually from XFCE, because I can't even get a terminal running in Gnome. 2) How the heck did this happen? I did hundreds of things before I rebooted - which thing messed up Gnome? Can someone suggest a way to find out what I did to cause this so I can file a bug report or at least avoid doing it again? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: i915 kms, init runlevel 2 switches virtual console

Why not build it as a module and load it from initramfs? That is what I do. that doesn't matter. it works and I get fb sooner in the boot process. I also have console-setup installed, and it does not do that here. Might be an issue with GDM (which I do not use). I'm not using gdm. the switch comes right at the start of runlevel 2, as a matter of fact, the message about runlevel change is the first that appears a the last virtual console. Also, kernel switches the required video mode a bit later then vesafb did. Is there a way to set this on the kernel command line? I've read that it is recommended to get rid of the vga=mode. I've tried setting this via video= parameter, but I guess inteldrmfb doesn't support modedb. If you build it as module, the initramfs scripts translate the video= parameter into something the module understands. Thus, video=i915 is sufficient if you enable KMS by default (CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y). there is no difference between static compile vs. module. the driver detects display (probably) and sets the recommended resolution automaticaly and that is what it does. the only difference from vesafb is that vesafb changes it right at the start of kernel boot process while i915 does it after some time in the boot process. but I guess that vesafb uses the standard and can be set sooner and i915 needs some kernel stuff initialized before it can grab and set the mode. All I'd like to know is what and why switches virtual terminals at boot. mk -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Is it the default X gray screen with a mouse cursor and nothing else? Is it some desktop backdrop that you set? we need some more information. I had set the screen to no background image, just a solid color (off-white). I had deleted the bottom panel. In the top panel I set the panel to transparent so that it appeared in the same color as the desktop. And I went into gconf-editor and unchecked the box to display icons on the desktop. Some of this may be the source of the problem, but I doubt it. I have run Gnome like this for years on Ubuntu. I like my screen empty with just the panel at the top. Having set things up this way, when I log in now I get an utterly blank off-white screen. I can't verify that metacity is not running because this time I cannot open any windows - no way to launch anything without the panel. I'm just assuming that it is not running because last time it happened I was able to create a launcher on the desktop which allowed me to open a terminal window. The terminal window was lacking all the stuff that the window manager creates. And for sure the panel is not there. The mouse and keyboard work. But if I hover with the mouse over the place on the missing panel where the Applications menu is I can click, but nothing happens. In other words, the panel is not just invisible, it is completely not there. Also, how are you selecting GNOME from the (I assume) GDM login? Actually I didn't select Gnome. The GDM login has the option, but Gnome is the default, so I just enter my username and password and hit Enter. The GDM login screen has other options, Failsafe Gnome, among others. But none of them got me anything more than a blank screen without window manager or gnome-panel. Of course, now there is an option to boot to XFCE4, which is what I am using until I figure out how to fix Gnome. I'm wondering if you're somehow changing the default selection to be a .xsession session and consequently getting an empty session. Now we might be getting somewhere. I am not very familiar with what's under the hood in Linux. What is an .xsession session? And bear in mind that all I did was reboot and log in as usual. At the GDM screen I just entered my username and password and hit Enter. I did not select any options. If I'm getting an .xsession session it is not because I deliberately chose an .xsession session. Of course, *something* caused it to happen. That's what I need to figure out. I should add that if I deliberately select Gnome for the session I still get the blank screen sans metacity and gnome-panel. So this long story boils down to two questions: 1) How can I fix Gnome? What part of the configuration starts metacity and gnome-panel when the user logs in? Note that I'll have to do this manually from XFCE, because I can't even get a terminal running in Gnome. Perhaps you've installed something that conflicts with GNOME (can't imagine what that might be) or removed something critical. Looking at the aptitude logs didn't help - no error messages. There are two logs, both dated Friday, the first at 10:44 am and the second at 10:57 am. The only strange thing is that the second one is clearly the initial installation (very long, includes apps that are installed by default like Inkscape and OOo, 1169 total packages), but the first one is an upgrade for 20 packages. How could there be an upgrade before the OS was installed? And bear in mind that this was a new installation, reformatting the hard disk. Very odd. I also looked at dmesg and at /var/logs/messages, but I didn't see anything obvious. I'm off to google on what an .xsession is. Thanks for the clue. Configuring a US keyboard with umlauts in sid (hal etc?)
Hi, I have a Thinkpad T43p which has a quite complete keyboard, and it comes with US layout. Which I like. However, I'd also like to be able to easily input german Umlauts. I don't like the compose approach, it needs too much keypressing for fast typing. Instead I want to use the AltGr key to turn AltGr+a to ä, AltGr+A to Ä and so forth. In lenny this worked fine. Now I have upgraded to unstable, and it stopped working. I'm writing here to get some help. I found out that there are two places that claim to be responsible for keyboard configuration now: One is /etc/default/keyboard, the other would be /etc/hal/fdi/policy. However, I can't figure out how to do it right. /etc/default/keyboard has keywords just like the old xorg.conf, but not quite. There, I have XKBMODEL, XKBLAYOUT, XKBVARIANT, and XKBOPTIONS in xorg.conf, I used this definition for my keyboard: Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Keyboard Driver kbd Option CoreKeyboard Option XkbRules xorg Option XkbModel pc104 Option XkbLayout us # Option XkbVariantintl Option XkbModel thinkpad Option XkbOptions compose:caps,lv3:ralt_switch_multikey,eurosign:e EndSection So I tried $ egrep -v '^#|^$' /etc/default/keyboard XKBMODEL=thinkpad XKBLAYOUT=us XKBOPTIONS=compose:caps,lv3:ralt_switch_multikey,eurosign:e (and also with XKBVARIANT=intl and intl-altgr), but that doesn't recover the old behavior. It seems those xorg options are simply not supported, as dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration tells me. So I looked at the other way, but I can't find an example file that looks like it could contain settings like the ones above. Finally, I find /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-x11-evdev.fdi - which seems to delegate its configuration to evdev, which is documented as being configured in xorg.conf. Err. Any hints how I should proceed? Re: Lost window manager and gnome-panel
I see you've made progress elsewhere in this thread, so just a couple of points below... Now we might be getting somewhere. I am not very familiar with what's under the hood in Linux. What is an .xsession session? users can specify an .xsession or .xinitrc (not sure if gdm uses .xinitrc or not) file to control how their X session is created. Typically this is used when one wants a highly customized configuration using a non-standard windowmanager (if a WM is used at all...) or when starting the X session from a console via startx (what I do). Basically, it is a shell script that is run by X after it sets up the graphics display and in it the user specifies various things they want such as environment variables, starting special services, a window manager etc. When that script exits, then the X session closes and returns the user to the console. But this doesn't sound like your problem, so that's just for your education ;) [...] Looking at the aptitude logs didn't help - no error messages. I wasn't looking for error messages, but rather information about what packages were being installed or removed that might have provided a clue. REgardless, I know you've got it narrowed down to a local user configuration issue, so good luck with that. A signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Asus M2NPV-VM RAID and SMP64 feedback
Hi, I'm considering upgrading my box in an either-or scenario. *) either i buy an AMD Phenom X4 (9650, no TLB issue; socket AM2+ is compatible with AM2) to replace my Athlon64; or *) i buy one 500+ GB SATA-2 drive; or two with RAID. I'm considering Western Digital, two of them with 32Mb cache are roughtly the same price as an X4. The questions being: has anyone had experience with the X4 and Debian(64); and how well is RAID(1?) supported? I believe the motherboard has hw raid. I have one of those motherboards and it is running Ubuntu Intrepid. It has two 320 GB Western Digital SATA II drives in Linux software RAID that I set up with mdadm. I knew the motherboard had hardware RAID on it, but after discussing with Linux friends and googling on the subject I came to the conclusion that software RAID was more reliable than any kind of hardware RAID. It has been running beautifully for some time now. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org
Re: can only resolve dns names as root or with explicit nameserver address

I am really confused by this one. Any ideas? Never mind, it turns out dhclient is giving resolv.conf the wrong permissions. Might still be interesting to find out why it suddenly does that. Which version of dhclient do you use? isc-dhcp-client 4.1.0-1 is what I am using (might be experimental, instead of sid). I will look into it more closely tomorrow.
