Oh Himmel, auf was muß ich mich da einlassen... es gibt einen Patch (von zwei Komilitonen von mir als Master bzw. Hi! Hi, hatte ja schon gefragt wegen WLAN Karten unter Linux. Naja mit den hier erhaeltlichen kam ich nicht weite - alle zu neu mit den falschen Chipsaetzen. Hab mir dann doch wieder ne Netgear (die die ich schon hatte) gekauft. Ergebnis ist: In meinem Zimmer geht nach wie vor keine WLAN!!! Das laesst mich annehmen das ploetzlich das Signal zu schwach ist. Das merkwuerdige ist: Mit dem eingebauten Centrino-WLAN unter Windows gehts wunderbar... Mein Mitbewohner mit seiner D-Ling DWL-G630 hat auch keine Probleme Als WLAN-Router fungiert das HomePortal1000 das uns SBC fuer den DSL-Zugang gegeben hat... Also es sind die Fachleute fuer WLAN gefragt: Warum kann ich seit Di. Abend in meinem Zimmer nicht mal mehr ne IP holen - Mo gings noch ohne Probleme. Paketupdates gabs zwischendurch zwar aber die hab ich schon gecheckt. kern.log gibt leider nichts her... läuft in der Nähe vielleicht eine Home-Cinema-Audio-Funkübertragungs-Strecke? Die Dinger senden auf dem gleichen Frequenzband wie WLAN-Karten. Was heist falsche Chipsätze? afaik bekommt man _jede_ Wlan-Karte zumindest mit dem NDIS-Wrapper unter Linux zum Laufen (so auch meine MSI54G) - wenn es auch hin-und-wieder zu Verbindungsabbrüchen kommt. Hi! Da läuft wohl eine Diskussion, ob nicht generell _alle_ Attachments weggeworfen (haben in einer ML eigentlich ja auch nichts zu suchen) und html-Mails nach plaintext konvertiert werden sollten. Da bin ich auch bei debian-* dafür... lustig, auf debian security wurde es gerade auch vorgeschlagen. Da kontern einige jetzt, dass man dann keine Logfiles/Patches/... mehr schicken könnte. Wie kommen die denn darauf? Logfiles sind doch Plain Text, kann man also einfach in die Mail packen, braucht man nichtals Attachment zu machen. Zumal so vermutlich eher nur die relevanten Dinge gepostet werden. Und Patches sollte man eh im Source verschicken, damit jeder sieht was Sache ist und es für unterschiedliches Architekturen brauchbar ist. Also auch Plaintext. Hi! Hi! Ist es möglich, bzw. wie ist es möglich, über Netzwerk zwischen zwei X-Servern hin- und herzuschalten? Auf Rechner A ist User A eingeloggt, auf Rechner B ist User B eingeloggt. Kann User A sich den gesamten Bildschirm, den User B vor sich hat (Desktop, WM etc), mit dessen Erlaubnis auf seinem Monitor anzeigen lassen, und in der Umgebung von User B über Netzwerk arbeiten? Was ich jetzt so gefunden hatte war, dass man sich komplett auf einem anderen Rechner einloggen kann, jedoch nicht, ohne sich auszuloggen von dem einen zum anderen umschalten kann... gkrellm and SMP
hello, I'm running gkrellm on a SMP box (dual Celeron, Abit BP6) and it uses 60-70% of one CPU. Otherwise on a single-CPU box it only uses ~3%? Is gkrellm not SMP save? Nur lastet das meinen Server (Dual Celeron 466, Abit BP6) auf einer CPU zu ca. 60% aus, was auf einem Single-Prozessor-Rechner nicht der Fall ist (ca 2-3%). Hi! Hallo Leute, bin gerade hier am herumhünern mit ein paar MByte großen Dateien in /var/mail/... Mir ist fogedes passiert: Meine /home Partition des fileservers war voll und fetchmail hat selbständig wie gewohnt E-Mails abgeholt, währnd ich ein bishen im Krankenhaus war... Die Warn-Mail vom System hat mich erst heute erreicht... Nun habe ich für mehrwere $USER in /var/mail/ ein paar Mailbox- Dateine liegen, die ich mit mutt nicht öffnen kann: Keine Mailbox Wenn ich mir die Datei ansehe, dann sind die Mails vollständig, allerdings fehlen die einführenden From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Zeilen, weshalb sie von mutt nicht als Mailbox-Datei erkannt wird. Kleine Dateien habe ich bereits von Hand in Maildir verwandelt, aber meine eigenen hat 27 MBytes !!! Das sind ein paar tausend Messages... [...] kannst du nur probieren in welchem pci-slot die karte am weitesten der internen störquelle entfernt ist ...die eigentl. störquelle im rechner kann überall sein (grafik/netzteil/modem u.s.w.) ...ein computer funktioniert nunmal digital ..und ein analoges signal hat dort normalerweise nix zu suchen ... Du hast dir schon mal die Signale in einem Rechner mit dem Oszi angeschaut? - Dann würdest du da ganz schnell anders denken! Hi! [..] Hab hier einen Rechner, Debin 3.0, Kernel 2.4.20, 1GB Ram ohne High-Mem Support, 256MB Swap. Der Arbeitsspeicher ist meist zu 30% voll. Die Swappartion aber ist meist um die 60% voll. Ich verstehe nicht ganz, warum soviel Swap belegt ist. [...] Hmm, dachte ich hätte eine Antwort gefunden - Aber es kann doch ned sein, das der Swap heut auf einmal zu 89% voll ist. Der Arbeitsspeicher ist kaum belegt, der Rechner hat auch keine Last. Das würde ja bedeuten, das innerhalb einer Wocher der Swap von 40% auf 89% gefüllt wird OHNE das neue Prozesse hinzukommen. Hi! Horrido, obiges habe ich schon mal mit zwei sehr unterschiedlich schnellen und großen Platten probiert, mit dem Ergebnis, dass bei Schreibzugriffen die langsame Platte die schnelle ausbremste. Hätte man sich vorher denken können, ich weiss... Ich möchte ein raid1 mit zwei etwa gleich schnellen, unterschiedlich großen Platten aufsetzen. Die kleine Platte (18GB) und die ersten 18GB der Großen sollen symmetrisch angelegt und als raid1 eingerichtet werden. Den überstehenden Teil der größeren Platte will ich für weniger wichtige Daten nutzen. Hat eine(r) von euch sowas mal in Gebrauch gehabt? Hi! Hallo, mal gefragt, auf einem zweiten Computer habe ich drei Festplatten a 120 GB drin, ein CD-Laufwerk zur Installation und eine Ethernetkarte. Der Computer braucht keinen Bildschirm, keinen Drucker, soll nur an einem ersten Computer als Datenbunker dranhängen. geht das? generell Ja Die Ethernetkarte des ersten Gerätes ist DHCP-eingerichtet über einen DSL-Router, geht die dann überhaupt noch als Verbindung zu dem Datenbunker, oder sollte ich eine zweite Karte einbauen, die nicht DHCP hat, ebenso die Ethernetkarte von dem Daten-PC ? kann der DHCP-Server so eingerichtet werden, das er die IP anhand der MAC-Adresse zuordnet? Statisches DHCP Wie sollte ich die Ethernetkarten überhaupt einrichten? Nur mit IP-Nummer und Maske, keinen Gateway? Gateway braucht der Rechner nicht, ev. wenn noch andere Dienste drüber laufen sollen (Proxy o.ä.), dann schon Wieviel Linux braucht der Daten-PC dann überhaupt, reicht ein Mini-DEbian ohne X-Windows mit nfs-Modul, Ethernet-Modul und CD-Treiber im Kernel? IMHO JA Wie kriege ich den zweiten PC dazu, auch ohne Tastatur dann hochzufahren, damit eben bloß der Kasten mit dem Ethernetkabel unterm Schreibtisch steht? im bios nach Halt on all errors suchen und ausschalten oder auf all but keyboard setzen Wie ich den Datenbunker auf dem ersten PC mounte, ist mir klar, aber geht der Datenbunker so einzurichten, dass ich ihn nur anschalte und er fährt so hoch, dass er ohne weiteres Zutun für den anderen zugriffsfähig ist? selbstredend ... Hi! Hey, dachte zuerst auch, das es ein problem mit der Hardwar wäre, aber dann würde das Backup mit dem Programm Taper ja nicht einwandfrei funktionieren ... !! Davon abgesehen ist alles richtig angeschlossen und der Terminator hängt am Ende des SCSI Bus direkt hinter der HDD mit der ID 0, das Bandlaufwerk hat die ID 2 . Welchen Sinn macht den dsa device /dsev/nst0 ? non rewinding device !! Hi! Hi, fuer ein Finite-Element-Programm in C, muesste ich unbedingt mehr als 2Gb Speicher allokieren. Der Rechner hat 2Gb Speicher und 2Gb Swap. Ich habe erst gedacht, es liegt am Kernel (CONFIG_HIGHMEM ist gesetzt), habe jetzt aber festgestellt, dass es nicht moeglich ist in C eine Integer zu deklarieren, die groesser als 2^31 ist. [...] Mit den 3 com Dos Tools habe ich beide Karten am Router auf Automatic gesetzt also MediaTyp und Transceiver-Type = AUTO Die zwei Karten eth0 3c905b (Auto 10/100 MBit) diese haengt am Switch und die eth1 3c509b (10MBit) habe ich lediglich den Tranceiver Typ fest auf TP 10MB gesetzt, was anderes wuerde ja auch keinen Sinn machen, da ich ja nicht ueber Kojax gehe. Diese Karte ist mit dem Modem verbunden. Weiss jemand ob das, damals uebereignete T-DSL Modem, half- oder auch voll duplex kann?. Also meines wissens nach machen die nur 10 MBit, als Half-Duplex. Aus kostengruenden wurde an den 100 MBit gespart. Hi! Hallo, alle zusammen! Hab eine Frage, vielleicht hier etwas OT, aber im Internet nichts gefunden: Mehrere Platten mittels LVM zu einer großen zusammenzufassen ist ja noch kein Problem. Ich habe nur das Problem, dass in einen meiner Rechner nicht genügend Platten passen, um die geforderte Größe zu erreichen. Hat jemand eine Idee, wie man sowas lösen kann (habe so in Richtung von zwei Rechnern gedacht, die zusammen etwas wie ein LVM-Verbund bilden, aber nach außen hin als ein ganzen per NFS exportiert werden können). Oder hab ich irgendwas übersehen? Bin für jeden Tipp dankbar! Network Block Devices, per LVM (oder Raid) zusammenfassen ist aber für meine Begriffe verdammt Problematisch warum passen in deinen Rechner nicht genug Platten? Hi! Hallo, die ~/ verzeichnisse meiner Rechner befinden sich auf meinem nfs-server. Authentication erfolgt derzeit per /etc/passwd, ... kein nis (yp)? Nun bekomme ich aber fehler vom portmapper und irgendwas mit dem rpc. Und beim Bootvorgang dauert es rund 5 Minuten bis es weitergeht. Es sind der Router, 11 Server und 7 Workstationen. Hi! 2. nmap sagt auch, dass der Port offen ist. Vielleicht einfach mal nach dem Aufruf von dhcpd in der rc-Datei gucken - da könnte es sein, daß bei *Aufruf* das Interface nicht als Kommonadozeilenparameter übergeben wird, wie's eigentlich müßte. Wird wirklich übergeben. Ich habe dhcpd auch mal per Hand gestartet mit /usr/sbin/dhcpd eth0. I've used the Windows BIOS management software (AFAICT, there's no keystroke that will invoke BIOS during the boot sequence) to change the boot device preveference to CDROM/FDD/HDD. you can use the keyboard buffer overrun-trick -- try to hold one key of the keyboard when you're powering on the laptop then there should come up the message keyboard error ... and you're in the BIOS try the F1 or the ESC-key first - i'm not sure which one works for me A potato CD in the drive appeared to be completely ignored, so I made a boot floppy, which emits the message SYSLINUX 1.48 1999-09-26 Boot failed and hangs. What should I try next? hello, everybody i'm using a 2.2.13ac3 kernel with hpt366 patches on an Abit BP6-board i have my raid0 (pub, 34GB) exported, sometimes when i access the raid via nfs (knfs 1.4.7 client) i get following message: Feb 27 22:29:00 mind kernel: find_fh_dentry: 08:03/116774 dir/116815 not found! can somebody tell by what this is caused? Hi! [1] Actually, some AMD processors do support SMP - the K6 (I think it was the K6) and the Athlon (most definitely - it uses the bus protocol of Compaq's Alpha, called EV6). Hi! Greetings, I know I've seen this addressed before, but for the life of me I can't seems to find it, so I will ask the group. I have several machine, now running DOS 6.2. The system BIOS doesn't support large drives, 540MB is the max. I have several 630-1000MB drives and wish to use them on these machines then boot the machines up with LINUX. What do I set the BIOS to in order to correctly partition the drives with Linux? no it won't, bogomips depend only on your cpu (-registers)
I have found in the past on a couple of occasions I have had ludicrously
low bogomips figures and have re-compiled the kernel (not even changing
the settings!) and the rate has gone up the next time i have re-booted.
Only ever happened with a RedHat system - don't know why.

don't worry about it, bogomips are bogus, they don't say anything since the
bogomips are equal to your clock frequency (or to the double clock freq with
some (all) K6)
maybe them could be used as comparision-argument, but this was in pre P5 times

For the kernel it won't make any difference but M$-DO$ and Win1895 rely on the

No other operating system inside. Hi! Pozdrav ! I have some problems during the configuration of Xfree86. I'm guessing that problem is in video card and monitor configuration. I have ATI 3D Xpression+PC2TV 4MB and ADI ProVista E44 15 monitor. I chooseright video card prom the card list and enter the right horizontal and vertical frequencies numbers and when I click on DONE then when he tries to do whatever he needs to, I wait for a minute or so, and all I get is black screen, then I do alt+f1 and it says something like 'unable to connect to x server' and then he tries one more time but with the same results. What should I do? I installed xserver-mach64, vga and svga xservers with dselect. /etc/X11/Xserver exist line with /usr/bin/X11/XF86_Mach64. What is debian distro? Could anyone send me a copy of his own XF86Config file if has the same or so card as I have? I tried to copy XF86Config file in /etc/, which I created a long time ago with MiniLinux and it worked there, but I just the configs for X11 are in /etc/X11/ - so it is for the XF86Config, too couldn't, like I haven't even write cp ... Yes, I'm logged as root. Where can I, if neccessery, downoad newer version of Xfree86, and how do I know which version do I have? dpkg -l packagename will show the version newer XFree-packages can be found at ftp.de.debian.org - i suppose you´ve hamm (debian 2.0) installed - so you´ll find a newer in /debian/dists/slink (frozen) but be careful some packages are possibly broken (because of frozen - pre release - stadium of slink (debian 2.1)) Thanx a lot ! P.S. another question. When I ran bo on my system I used to have a small util named xmem running,
which showed memory utilization in X11. I upgraded to Debian 2.0 a few
months ago and have not yet been able to relocate xmem.
I grepped the contents-file for it but did not find it, I also searched the
mailing lists archive at debian.org, but to no avail. I found someone asking
where xmem had gone, but there was no answer.
you´re not alone, i´ve asked for xmem some time ago, but nobody could help
IIRC xmem was a contained in xcontrib
someone said that xmem was a symlink to xload - but i couldn´t find such
option for xload - so i´ve searched for some equivalent
the only thing my requirements nearly fill was xosview, except the size (i´ve
used xmem swallowed into an fvwm-panel)
xosview´s graphical view disorts if the geometry decreases against zero --
mmm, it´s lacking a minimal restriction and the font doesn´t resize
(i´ve only seen the xosview from hamm and slink)
mabye some other guys know where it´s gone
Any help appreciated.

the HD is setup into 4 Non-MSDOS partitions, and
they are all blown WAY out of proportion, like I have one, 151 MB partition
on a 120 MB hard drive,
and all the other partitions are huge. I have a
feeling that's something that's causing fdisk's
error message. Any help would be appreciated.
try to remove all partitions with M$-fdisk, it´s never an failure to
create/remove partitions with the OS which should/has worked on it
and try to autodetect your harddrive if in the laptop´s bios there´s such
option (well, i don´t know your hardware at all)

2 - dual boot (one laptop w/debianwin95, 1 box w/debianwin98)

this is the desired mode of operation:
i would like to setup an intranet of sorts. I've gone through most of the
networking mini-HOWTOs...ip-masq, intranet, etc. but i'm a bit confused.
i would like to connect all of the machines together (already done) with
samba but i would also like to setup an internet connection via a modem on
a debian box with ip masq but the ip that this box obtains is dynamic from
my dialup. This is where my confusion ariseshow do i need to setup
the other non-deb boxes so that they may surf the net also? DHCP?
use static ip´s (maybe a class-c-network -- 192.168.xxx.xx), dhcp is a
method for dynamical assigning of ip´s, which in my opinion isn´t necessary
for only five boxes
you have to install the tcp/ip-components at each wintendo box -- then you
can assign a static ip´s - but be sure each ip is uniqe ;)
install a proxy (maybe squid) or use transparent proxying (IIRC only
2.1-kernel´s) -- then you only have to config your other machines (e.g.
netscape) to use the debian-box as proxy-server
the dynamic isp-ip isn´t a real problem, the masquerading is able to let only
the packages destined for the outside through to your isp. IIRC there are
several ways to transmit internal packages to the outside (called routing)
-- and i don´t know each
On the other hand , when off-line hand i would also like to be able to let
users on the non-deb boxes to
telnet to the deb boxes when off-line. (Can you tell i'm new to this
networking thingy? ;)) Is this possible?
if so just point me in the right direction!!!
that´s no problem, if they are connected (via lan) you only have to edit
their hosts and networks -- both are in the windows-directory
(i´m not sure if this is correct for nt but for 95/98)

Netscape is not part of Debian, therefore it can't be on the official CD.
Some vendors do include it on the Debian CD's they are selling, though.
netscape 4.5 (navigator communicator) are gonna be a part of debian 2.1
(called slink)
When do you expect Debian 2.1 to be released officially? And Debian
2.2?
When it is ready (2x). There really is no better answer. An equivalent
formulation is: When all release critical bugs are fixed and the official CD
images are produced and tested.

limit of mutt
hello debians!
i ran into trouble with mutt - where is the maillimit?
my situation:
i rewrote my procmailrc, then i refilter my collected mail (mostly from
debian ;-) with it -- that works great
but than, i´ve wanted to view into my debian-devel-mbox
mutt ran and ran -showing sorting mail (the swap-space decreased so i´ve
added a swapfile) - after waiting about three hours i killed mutt (the
processor ran idle)
then i´ve tried it with another comp over nfs -- this time it worked without
prob´s
the mbox was about 90megs big
the first comp. had 16mb ram, 32mb swap and 80 mb swapfile
the second (nfs), had 64mb ram 64mb swap - no swapfile
i know the first is underpowert, but the time in this case doesn´t matter
(i´ve wanted to split the mbox) and i´m confident that such will work ;-)
in meantime i´ve done all work with the second-option
here´s my question:
had this been a problem of mutt or only of resources??
hope, i´m not too pushing, it´ just for info

use ncftp it has the -C switch for continous getting
SO5 is libc6 -- it ships it's own libc-version with, but don't use it --
download the newest version of libc from unstable (slink)
btw: you don't need to upgrade completely!

in it there are the dos-drives defined
/dos is predefined as c:
so, if you don´t have a mounted msdos-partition at /dos (and if your windir

hmmm, i´ve never used a parallelport-cdrom but i think this should work like
a par-port-zip with the possible exception of an ide-cdrom (the zip works
like an scsi)
i don´t know if there´s par-port-ide support in 2.0-kernels but in 2.1 (IIRC)
- maybe in 2.0.36, too

probs: color printing with canon bjc620
hello debians
i configured my printcap to print with my canon bjc620 using the bjc600 filter
it works fine -- but only black and white (i´ve tested with SO5, Netscape, xv)
i remember some time ago it works! (this was on my server which is momentaly
down)
i´m using
ii magicfilter 1.2-21 automatic printer filter.
ii lpr 5.9-27 BSD lpr/lpd line printer spooling system
is there anyone who prints color with this machine??
or: is there a better (special filter) for the bjc-620??
any hint is welcome

my way was installing a temporary dos-platform and then installing from
directly from the cd-rom (first time it was bo, but about 2 month back i
installed hamm completely new ;-)

libc and staroffice 5
hello debians! after upgrading libc on my hamm-box to slink´s 2.0.7u-4 my apt won´t install anything further! i´ve installed the new libc´s for staroffice 5. would installing slink´s apt (0.1.7 iirc) fix such problems? using dpkg -i directly doesn´t give any error-message here´s the apt-error: Updating package status cache...done Checking system integrity...dependency error You might want to run apt-get -f install' to correct these.
