libfam0c102 kills 182 KDE3 packages
Running KDE3 woody debian packages downloaded from kde site. Works great. In order to run nautilus and yelp in gnome2 I need libgnomevfs2-0 and libgnomevfs2-common which depends on libfam0c102. When I execute apt-get install libfam0c102 libgnomevfs2-0 libgnomevfs2-common these would all install OK however they would also remove all 182 kde3 packages. How can I keep kde3 installed and still run nautilus and yelp? Wassup? Victor -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: libfam0c102 kills 182 KDE3 packages
Thanks to all who replied. Will stick with KDE3.1 for now until the GCC 3.2 C++ recompiles are completed. Will be on the lookout for kde 3.1 in unstable. Victor * Joerg Wendland ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote: Michael Wardle, on 2003-02-04, 11:19, you wrote: I notice that the libfam package name was recently changed (I think from libfam0 to libfam0cxxx). I suspect that your KDE 3 packages depend on the old package name (libfam0) and the GNOME 2 packages depend on the new package name (libfam0c102). I also suspect that the new package superseeds or obsoletes (or whatever the Debian package term is) the old one, so installing libfam0c102 is attempting to remove libfam0. That is correct. We are currently in a transition to GCC 3.2 as default compiler. As the C++ compiler introduces a new ABI in contrast to our previous (2.95) compiler. That brings in the need to recompile all C++ libraries and applications depending on them. Because the new libraries are incompatible with the old ones we have to change the packages' names. Please see [0] for more information on this. If this is the case, you might like to see if there's a flag you can use to dpkg or apt-get to make it install them side-by-side (of course this is not an ideal solution). You should probably confirm whether what I have stated is correct and then inform the maintainer of the KDE packages that the dependency name has changed. One should wait until fresh KDE3 packages hit unstable. Unstable is not stable btw. so that dependency breakage is not that unusual. The actual partitions are: 1. * /dev/hda2 - linux OS mounted as / (Use entire drive for linux) 2. /dev/hdb6 - linux OS mounted as /mnt/deb (Use for file storage only) 3. * /dev/hdb7 - linux OS mounted as /mnt/debb (Emergency linux partition) 4. * /dev/hdb8 - OS/2 OS mounted as /mnt/os2 (HPFS) * = bootable OSs The names for the three bootable partitions I would use for CHOS would be: /dev/hda2 = Linux A (there are 2 kernels here /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old) /dev/hdb7 = Linux B /dev/hdb8 = OS/2 Right now the only kernel that will load is /boot/vmlinuz.old. /boot/vmlinuz will not load. It's not complaining about the source, but rather the destination when fetchmail contacts exim for the SMTP transfer. I even tried receiver_verify=false and qualify_recipient=localhost with no luck. Here's some relevant bits from my /etc/exim.conf: qualify_domain = raven.localhost local_domains = raven.localhost receiver_unqualified_nets = 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 If it matters (and it might), this machine normally has a dynamic connection to the internet (and a Dynamic IP), so I have bind/resolv set up to think this machine is under the (bogus) localhost domain. That seems to satisfy all the apps (lprng, sendmail originally, etc.) that were having trouble before, but I suppose this hack could be causing exim trouble. Minimizing Mail Packages?
Hello All, Connected intermittantly to internet using PPP to an ISP who uses POP3 for mail. I am attempting to minimize the number of packages needed to run mail. It seems there are many mail packages but not a great deal of information on there interrelationships. Am running on X the following Debian mail-related packages : exim, fetchmail, mh and exmh with subsidiary packages of metamail and mime-support. I know one needs both mh and exmh to do mail processing if exmh is used. Also POP3 support is needed for mail to and from the ISP. Are exim and fetchmail also required? Can one one just use mh and exmh by themselves to do all mail composing and handling as well as receiving and sending mail via POP3 to the ISP? I tried mutt and think it's great for subsidiary usage. Running Netscape Communicator
When starting Netscape Communicator 4.01 v6 from xterm, using the Netscape command, there are no error messages generated. All works well including encryption and decryption. When starting it using the Netscape button on the fvwm95 button bar an error message appears and everything works well except for encryption and decryption. The error message reads No valid encryption policy file was found for this English language version of Communicator. All encryption and decryption will be disabled. Pertinent excerpt from .fvwm2rc95 file follows immediately: -- [ snip ] - *FvwmButtons(Title Netscape, Icon nscape.xpm, \ Action 'Exec Netscape netscape -geometry 920x622+90+5 ') -- [ snip ] - How can Communicator be started from the button bar without generating the error message? fetchmail problem?
Hello all, I'm completely green behind the ears when it comes to email setup. Trying to get an exmh mail sytem established on my machine. I've installed the following debian GNU/Linux packages on an i586 machine: exim, eximon, fetchmail, metamail, mime-support, mh, and exmh. Only connected to internet via PPP to an ISP who uses POP3 for mail. Currently using Netscape Communicator for mail which works fine, however, I'd like to switch to exmh. It's covered by the GNU license and should definitely be added to the Debian distribution. Need Mirror of Master /debian/Incoming
Hello All, Once in a while I need a file or two from the /debian/Incoming directory at master.debian.org. Since they only have a five user anonymous ftp limit it's very hard to access the site. Most of the time you can't get in. It would be great if several mirror sites additionally mirrored only the /debian/Incoming directory of Master. Another thought would be for several sites, which are not now mirrors, to start mirroring only the /debian/Incoming directory of Master. What do I do to install files from /debian/hamm/hamm /debian/hamm/contrib and /debian/hamm/non-free? That is, how do I answer the ftp prompts from dselect so that I can install the files from the above directories? I've tried various answers to the prompts with no success. It's driving me bananas. Netscape Communicator 4.01b6 works fine
The new Netscape Communicator 4.01b6 installs nicely using the Debian netscape-beta package. It seems to be very stable but then again I never had problems with Communicator 4.0b5. Of course you must first delete the /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape link and then make a new soft link to ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape and all will be well. I live off the unstable directory so this may be why Communicator works OK for me. Who knows? Hi, xemacs19 works fine on my i586 machine. Unfortunately after installing xemacs20 xemacs20-support and then rebooting and running xemacs20 it dumps core. Have the error messages and gdb messages (around 8K) if anyone wants them. Any help sincerely appreciated. joost witteveen wrote: Guess I will also downgrade to -10.deb which works fine for me. Perhaps the FvwmTaskbar and FvwmPager will be packaged seperately in the near future. No, sorry to say you're wrong here. There must be a reason they were omitted from -10.2. And although I'd be inclined to say this statement _should_ be right, I (the one who packaged -10.2) don't know the reason, and I feel like there sortof isn't one. Another of life's little mysteries. Now here you are absolutely right. Other people have reported that simply rebuilding -10.2 fixed the missing modules, so that's what I plan to do when I release 10.3, but why-oh-why they are missing in 10.2 is completely beyond me. -- joost witteveen, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks for clearing up what's going on.
