libfam0c102 kills 182 KDE3 packages

2003-02-03 Thread Victor Torrico

Running KDE3 woody debian packages downloaded from kde site. Works great.

In order to run nautilus and yelp in gnome2 I need libgnomevfs2-0 and
libgnomevfs2-common
which depends on libfam0c102.

When I execute apt-get install libfam0c102 libgnomevfs2-0 libgnomevfs2-common
these would all install OK however they would also remove all 182 kde3 packages.

How can I keep kde3 installed and still run nautilus and yelp? Wassup?

Thanks to all who replied. Will stick with KDE3.1 for now until the GCC 3.2
C++ recompiles are completed. Will be on the lookout for kde 3.1 in unstable.

name (libfam0c102). I also suspect that the new package superseeds or
obsoletes (or whatever the Debian package term is) the old one, so installing
libfam0c102 is attempting to remove libfam0.

That is correct. We are currently in a transition to GCC 3.2 as default
compiler. As the C++ compiler introduces a new ABI in contrast to our
previous (2.95) compiler. That brings in the need to recompile all C++
libraries and applications depending on them. Because the new libraries
are incompatible with the old ones we have to change the packages'
names. Please see [0] for more information on this.

If this is the case, you might like to see if there's a flag you can use to
dpkg or apt-get to make it install them side-by-side (of course this is not
an ideal solution). You should probably confirm whether what I have stated
is correct and then inform the maintainer of the KDE packages that the
  dependency name has changed.

One should wait until fresh KDE3 packages hit unstable. Unstable is not
stable btw. so that dependency breakage is not that unusual.

 Hope that helps,

Universal Midi Player UMP

Has anyone been able to make UMP work with Debian 2.2 and

allows you to play realtime midi files on the web. I realize it's
not a debian package yet, however, if anyone has used it
successfully I'd appreciate feedback on what you had to do to get
it to work. I get the X box with the 3 controls for it but can't
get the audio to work. Audio works fine using the plugger plugin.

Corrupted Partition Table

1998-08-21 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello,

I'm trying to use the OS/2 3.0 bootloader to select Debian/GNU Linux, DOS or
OS/2 upon boot-up.

The OS/2 fdisk does not work. It works OK on another hard drive. If I hit
control/alt/delete to reboot, bios gives me a corrupted partition table error.

How can I clean up the partition table so the OS/2 fdisk will work and I can
get on with installing Debian/GNU Linux on this 6.4G Western Digital drive??

I can use debian to work on the drive with the bad partition table.

What docs might tell how to clean up a partition table?

Your window manager probably uses the keys F1 - F4. If you want to use
these keys you have to disable them in the window manager config file.

Thanks for your kind reply.

I'm using icewm. Tried other window managers with the same result.

Couldn't find anything in the config file that affected F1-F4.

I can easily get by without using these four keys. I really think it may be in
terminfo which is part of ncurses. A new ncurses 4.2 is due out one of these
days from Thomas Dickey. Also he is working on a new xterm.

Guess I'll just wait for the new stuff.

CHoose OS v0.80 - Tale of Woe

1997-12-12 Thread Victor Torrico

Hello,

Think CHOS is the greatest thing since chocolate ice cream. I have it partially
configured but can't boot all OSs on several partitions. Obviously it's a case
of cockpit trouble on my part. I've tried all I can do to get all three
bootable partitions to boot with only partial success. Here's the sad tale:

Running Debian Linux i586 box with two 1.6 GByte EIDE hard drives. Before I was
using the OS/2 loader and lilo which worked fine for selecting the partition to
boot. The actual partitions are:
  1. * /dev/hda2 - linux OS mounted as / (Use entire drive for linux)
  2. /dev/hdb6 - linux OS mounted as /mnt/deb (Use for file storage only)
  3. * /dev/hdb7 - linux OS mounted as /mnt/debb (Emergency linux partition)
  4. * /dev/hdb8 - OS/2 OS mounted as /mnt/os2 (HPFS)

   * = bootable OSs

The names for the three bootable partitions I would use for CHOS would be:

/dev/hda2 = Linux A (there are 2 kernels here /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old)
/dev/hdb7 = Linux B
/dev/hdb8 = OS/2

Right now the only kernel that will load is /boot/vmlinuz.old. /boot/vmlinuz
will not load. Also using vchos I couldn't get /dev/hdb7 or /dev/hdb8 to load
no matter what I tried. It's probably something dumb I'm overlooking.

Please help or point me to where I can get help.

My /etc/chos.conf file is: (before I tried other OSs)

snip

# BACKGOUND
background=dump:/boot/bg/chos.bin

# MENUPOSITION
menupos=21,16

# TIMERPOSITION
timerpos=24,3

# FILE SETTINGS

##

bootsect DOS {

}

linux Linux {
  color=blue
  image=/vmlinuz
}

linux Old Linux {
  color=red
  image=/boot/vmlinuz.old
}

snip

I also tried image=/boot/vmlinux under Linux with no success (no boot).
Old Linux boots fine. I don't use DOS at all so I can simply elininate that
part of the file.

Hi, I maintain slrn, but I haven't actually used this capability (I prefer
leafnode). Anyway, what you need to do is run slrn with the --spool
parameter. You might also need to set some variables in your .slrnrc to
configure it to look in the right place for the news spool:

 set spool_inn_root /var/spool/slrnpull
 set spool_root /var/spool/slrnpull/news
 set spool_nov_root /var/spool/slrnpull/news
 set read_active 1
 set use_slrnpull1

I made the above notations and this fixed the problem.

For everybody that has this problem, try the following:

o Boot with the -b option on the LILO command line
 o At the shell prompt, enter mount -n -o remount,rw /
 o edit /etc/inittab
** Write down how the entry with /etc/init.d/boot looks now, I
really would like to know that!

-

The entry before changing the /etc/inittab file is:

 si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS

I changed this to:

 si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/boot

Also the installation of sysvinit 0.72 had actually deleted the
/etc/init.d/boot file. I copied /etc/init.d/boot.OLD to /etc/init.d/boot to
restore the file. This and going from .../rcS to .../boot fixed the problem.

To test I reinstalled sysvinit 0.72 and the /etc/inittab entry went back to:

 si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS

Also the /etc/init.d/boot file once again was deleted.

-

Thank you for your kindness in helping.

Regards,

Victor

o change the /etc/init.d/boot to /etc/init.d/rcS so that it looks like

si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS

 o Save and exit
 o Type mount -n -o remount,ro /
 o Enter reboot -f

Now the system should boot again.

I'll upload a fixed sysvinit tommorow morning. In the mean time, do NOT
 install sysvinit-2.72 !

PS: please read the line with `**' again and mail me !

X Server Client Refusal?

1997-09-29 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello All,

Where in the docs is the information regarding X client setup?

When running as root or su applications are refused permission to run. The
following error message appears:

vct# nedit
Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
NEdit: Can't open display
vct#

The applications run fine when logged in as a regular user, however,
critical files which need to be modified cannot be since they are opened as
readonly files. Of course I can fall back to the console and modify files
to my hearts content but this seems rather inane to me.

There's a ton of stuff in X and knowing where to look in the docs is
probably the answer but this takes a while to get used to.

Any good overview of the X process in the docs?

Victor

Thanks to all who responded: Remco Blaakmeer, Scott Ellis, Carlos Martinez,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and Phillipe Troin. Your kindness is appreciated very much.

Scott Ellis advised putting /usr/lib/libc5-compat line beneath the
/usr/X11R6/lib line in the /etc/ld.so.conf file. This was done.

A slight modification of Phil's suggestion worked for me.

I did a locate XKeysymDB and found the file in the /usr/X11/lib directory.
Then I made a soft link as follows:

ln -s /usr/X11/lib/XKeysymDB /usr/X11R6/lib/locale

Now both Mosaic and nedit work normally for me using the -6.deb versions of
the packages.

Cheers,

Victor

It turned out that I had incorporated Carlos Martinez Txakartegi's

export an environmental variable for the XKeysymDB file. I put this
variable in my ~/.bash_profile and sourced it and all was well. It turned
out I did not need the above soft link.

Here is the solution by Carlos:

export XKEYSYMDB=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB

I have encountered the same problem. I have downgraded several packages
and then re-upgraded them. I have tracked it down to be either xlib6_3.3-6
or xlib6g_3.3-6 that is causing this problem. Downgrading xlib6 to 3.3-4
and downgrading enough packages so that I could remove xlib6g (because it
conflicts with xlib6_3.3-4) solved the problem. I have been using
xlib6_3.3-5 and xlib6g_3.3-5 without this problem, but I couldn't find
these packages anywhere. If anybody knows where I can download xlib6_3.3-5
and/or xlib6g_3.3-5, I could take an even more close look at it.

Sorry, but unfortunately, I don't have the -5 version of the libraries.

Since I only have a couple of packages that I use which are affected I will
wait. I can do without Mosaic and nedit temporarily until things are fixed.

Thanks for your reply.

Intermittant PPP connection

1997-09-20 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello All,

I'm using the standard debian PPP stuff (pon, poff plog) to my ISP
provider. I used to stay connected rock solid with no disconnections. Now
when I do a pon I connect with no problem but drop the connection after a
few seconds. pon automatically redials and this sequence keeps repeating.

This really screws up the works. I've installed lots of stuff from
hamm/hamm recently but don't know if this caused the problem. I've tried
reinstalling netbase, netstd and ppp with no luck.

Any help on this is sincerely appreciated.

I should have been clearer. I can log on OK but disconnect after 30 to 40
seconds. Then pon autoredials.

Maybe there is an inactivity timeout window set by the ISP?

Thanks for your reply.

My ISP has a 30 sec timeout on login so I put a ping in in my ip-up
script to get things solid before he had a chance to disconnect me :-)
 It looks like this:

 snip

 export PATH
 sleep 1s
 ping -c 2 cl-sys.com

 snip
This seems to be enough to get me to the next level of timeouts, 10
min. I'm having similar problems on several machines and OS's as you

I think that is exactly it because of this message when disconnecting:

Piggy backing on your idea, I am just leaving ping turned on all the time so
that there is one ping every twenty seconds. This keeps the ISP timeout
window happy and should not interfere in any significant way with using any
applications or downloads. This now allows me to take my time without
worrying about thirty second timeouts. It turns out that the ISP timeout is
after any thirty second period of inactivity. Not just after login.

Here's what I do:ping -i 20 ISP domain name goes here

ie; I use: ping -i 20 cfw.com

Of course this could also be put in the ip-up file or made into a bash
function.  pg () { ping -i 20 cfw.com; }

Let me know if this works for you please.

Cheers,

Victor

Upon boot the screen comes up with the console login prompt. After I log

What must be done to get X to come up automatically instead of stopping at

Hello Jose Luis,

I'm using the following debian packages for mail. They work very well. These
are the only two packages you need for mail. They are mutt version 0.81 and
exim version 1.62. Try them and I think you will be plesantly surprised.
They are available for ftp from ftp.debian.org in the

influence you since both these packages are very stable.

Try making your own by (as root):

1. touch /etc/resolv.conf
2. edit /etc/resolv.conf to add your dns nameserver

The file should look like:

search .
nameserver 123.123.123.123

123.123.123.123 would be your domain nameserver numerical address.

Netscape Replacement?

1997-08-12 Thread Victor Torrico

Hello All,

Netscape Communicator is such a memory hog that I've decided to go to
separate programs for mail and web browsing. Mail is taken care of by the
super!! XCmail progam (not a debian package).

The web browser's the rub. I need to check my usage time periodically from
my ISP using a browser. Unfortunately arena and chimera2 both choke on the
usage information page (core dumps). Netscape did this OK.

Whst other browsers can I use; preferably debian packages. If not whatever
else might work.

Re: Problem with exim and fetchmail.

1997-08-11 Thread Victor Torrico
Mail of Rob Browning:
 Christoph Lameter [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Put the following into /etc/exim.conf
(customize for your setup! by default exim does not accept unqualified
 e-mail!)

 qualify_domain = waterf.org
 receiver_unqualified_nets =
 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0:206.1.27.36/255.255.255.255

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't do it. It's not
complaining about the source, but rather the destination when
fetchmail contacts exim for the SMTP transfer. I even tried
receiver_verify=false and qualify_recipient=localhost with no luck.

Here's some relevant bits from my /etc/exim.conf:

 qualify_domain = raven.localhost
 local_domains = raven.localhost
 receiver_unqualified_nets = 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0

If it matters (and it might), this machine normally has a dynamic
connection to the internet (and a Dynamic IP), so I have bind/resolv
set up to think this machine is under the (bogus) localhost domain.
That seems to satisfy all the apps (lprng, sendmail originally, etc.)
that were having trouble before, but I suppose this hack could be
 causing exim trouble.

I've read the mini/Dynamic-IP-Hacks HOWTO, and their suggestions
caused the same exim SMTP failures. I've also tried localhost and
localhost:raven.localhost for each of the above variables without
 success.

 Thanks

The following is what I did for a ppp connection to an ISP using dynamic
addressing and pop3. I also used hack 5? of the mini/Dynamic-IP-Hacks HOWTO
(the one where you make new hosts-up and hosts-down files). This
Dynamic-IP-Hackshack
worked perfectly for me.

Anyhow my ~/.fetchmailrc is:
poll milo.cfw.com --- Your ISP Mail server goes here
protocol pop3
uidl
username vtorrico is [EMAIL PROTECTED] here
password xxx
smtphost milo.cfw.com --- Your ISP Mail server goes here

My pertinent part of /etc/exim.conf is:
# This is the main exim configuration file.
# It was originally generated by `eximconfig', part of the exim package
# distributed with Debian, but it may edited by the mail system
administrator.
# This file originally generated by eximconfig at Fri Aug 8 20:09:27 EDT

# See exim info section for details of the things that can be configured
here.
# General configuration here, such as local domains

qualify_domain = cfw.com  Your ISP domain name
local_domains = localhost

local_domains_include_host = true

  id ${message_id} (Debian)
end

Make sure the following line is in /etc/inetd.conf:
smtpstream tcpnowait mail/r/sbin/exim exim -bs

To make From: part of messages read correctly change or add the localname
statement to /etc/mh/mtstailor. The localname should be the domain name of
your ISP. Mine is cfw.com.

This is my /etc/mh/mtstailor:

Wrong From: name

1997-08-07 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello All,

Finally got fetching and sending eMail working using the following
Debian packages: exmh, fetchmail, mh, metamail, mime-support and smail.

There is only one problem: the From: part of the eMail header shows
[EMAIL PROTECTED] which is incorrect. It should read
[EMAIL PROTECTED]. zippy is my host name and it and zippy.gorp.net are
in the /etc/hosts file.

Am running intermittant dialup ppp to an ISP who uses pop3 and dynamic
addressing. Am not on a local network except for localhost and
loopback.

What must be changed and in which programs to make From: read
properly?

Regards,

Victor

PS. Using Netscape to send this message so the list processor can
respond correctly.

 Hi,

I don't know how to do headerrewriting in smail. I simply specify a
 from header in my mailprogramm.

If this is not suitable to you, then you could dig through smail
 documentation about this issue.

 Ciao,

Larry Daffner kindly provided an easy solution. Make a new file
/etc/mh/mtstailor or change this file if already there and put or add
one line to it localname: cfw.com. This rewrites the From: part of
the header to [EMAIL PROTECTED] which is correct. Just replace cfw.com
with your ISP domain name if one has this problem.

Hello all,

Using PPP to an ISP (cfw.com) who uses pop3 and dynamic addressing.

Fetching external mail with fetchmail and exim works fine. exmh inc
works fine.

When I send mail to myself at [EMAIL PROTECTED] it immediately goes to
the /var/spool/mail/vtorrico file. I can then inc it with exmh and it
appends to the end of the inbox list OK. The problem is that it never
leaves my machine to go to my ISP's mail server. I never see it when
doing a fetchmail. I'm trying to get exmh setup for the first time and
this is where it stands at the moment.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Victor

Hello Again,

Many thanks for the kind replies from Adrian, Buddha, Dima and Igor.
It's so helpful to have people available that have the knowledge and
information one needs. I appreciate your time and effort.

Yes Igor, I turned off html in my outgoing messages. Please advise if
there is still a problem there.

Well, it turns out that there is a new POP3 compliant X package that
does everything I need to do: fetches POP3 messages from the ISP, sends
outgoing messages, makes user-defined folders, uses a really neat mail
reader, composes outgoing messages, is eminently configurable, plus does
other stuff that I'm exploring. The executable is a static binary.

What I like is that it is one package and does not require other
supporting packages. It's currently in beta but seems to be fairly
stable. This is a work-in-progress with other features to be added.

Anyhow, it's called XCmail and is available from sunsite. The file name
is XCmail-0.9-Linux-bin.tar.gz. I don't know if the authors would agree
to GNU licensing or not.

I stuck it in /usr/local/xcmail with a soft link to the /usr/X11R6/bin
directory for executing it.

Minimizing Mail Packages?

Hello All,

Connected intermittantly to internet using PPP to an ISP who uses POP3
for mail. I am attempting to minimize the number of packages needed
to run mail. It seems there are many mail packages but not a great
deal of information on there interrelationships.

Am running on X the following Debian mail-related packages : exim,
fetchmail, mh and exmh with subsidiary packages of metamail and mime-support.
I know one needs both mh and exmh to do mail processing if exmh is used.
Also POP3 support is needed for mail to and from the ISP.

Are exim and fetchmail also required? Can one one just use mh
and exmh by themselves to do all mail composing and handling as well as
receiving and sending mail via POP3 to the ISP?

I tried mutt and think it's great for subsidiary usage.

Running Netscape Communicator

1997-07-29 Thread Victor Torrico

When starting Netscape Communicator 4.01 v6 from xterm, using the Netscape
command, there are no error messages generated. All works well including
encryption and decryption.

When starting it using the Netscape button on the fvwm95 button bar an error
message appears and everything works well except for encryption and decryption.

The error message reads No valid encryption policy file was found for this
English language version of Communicator. All encryption and decryption will
be disabled.

Pertinent excerpt from .fvwm2rc95 file follows immediately:

-- [ snip ] -
*FvwmButtons(Title Netscape, Icon nscape.xpm, \
Action 'Exec Netscape netscape -geometry 920x622+90+5 ')
-- [ snip ] -

How can Communicator be started from the button bar without generating the
error message?

however, I'd like to switch to exmh.

Have been able to get everything setup including mh using the info in

Need Mirror of Master /debian/Incoming

1997-07-24 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello All,

Once in a while I need a file or two from the /debian/Incoming directory at
master.debian.org. Since they only have a five user anonymous ftp limit it's
very hard to access the site. Most of the time you can't get in.

It would be great if several mirror sites additionally mirrored only the
/debian/Incoming directory of Master. Another thought would be for several
sites, which are not now mirrors, to start mirroring only the /debian/Incoming
directory of Master.

What do all debian users think about the value of this possibility?

What do the directors and developers think about this?

How would it be implemented?

Could you send me a paragraph describing the problem and the fix

BTW, setting LANG=en_US works fine if one uses the wg15-locale package, however,
the replacement package, locales, gives error messages when LANG=en_US since it
has bugs. See the debian bug list for the locales package. One gets perl error

1997-07-22 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello all,

The subject package will not configure. One of its purposes is to allow the
locales package to operate correctly.

Has anyone been able to install this package and get locales operating
correctly?

All packages that libc5 depends upon were first installed. Trying to install
the subject package one gets the following error message.:

vtorrico# dpkg -i libc5_5.4.33-5.deb
(Reading database ... 41448 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace libc5 5.4.33-5 (using libc5_5.4.33-5.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libc5 ...
Setting up libc5 (5.4.33-5) ...
dpkg: error processing libc5 (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libc5
vtorrico# dpkg -s libc5

dpkg -s libc5 shows it as being installed and half configured.

The libc5_5.4.33-3.deb package installs and configures perfectly.

What needs to be done to install the -5.deb version of this package?

Victor

 Hi,

I'm afraid I don't quite understand your question. The kernel

The kernel has nothing to do with the locales problems (in

of the locales package do you have?

 manoj

I was confused about libs. Now I think I understand. For instance, if I use
gcc, I must use libc5 or libc6 depending upon whether gcc was compiled using
libc5 or libc6 respectively. Is this correct?

Also does the kernel use libs or not use them or is it completely self
sufficient?

There are several bug reports against the locales package which explain why I
cannot set the locale info.

kernel compile using libc6

1997-07-18 Thread Victor Torrico
Hello,

How does one compile a kernel that supports libc6 dependent packages using
kernel-package v-3.5 ?

Or else if not using kernel-package, how does one do this?

I'm using packages with libc6 dependencies now and for the most part they seem
to work OK except for the locales package which chokes on setting LANG=en_US.
Get perl error message here. Hoping to cure this by the new compile. Just want
to try it to see if it works.

I'm living off all packages from hamm and using kernel 2.0.30 now.

Please, I'd like to find out the situation here.

I'm going in deeper than my knowledge base here. Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks,

locale settings questions

1997-07-10 Thread Victor Torrico
Let (a) = debian wg15-locale package, wg15-locale_2-5.deb
Let (b) = debian locales package, locales_2.0.4-1.deb

Using (a) wg15-locale there is no problem setting LANG=XX_XX to any XX_XX in
the /usr/share/locale directory. No error messages are generated when one
executes perl -v. Using LANG=en_US as an example. See following:

Using (b) locales when setting LANG=XX_XX to any XX_XX in the usr/share/locale
directory one gets the following error message when perl -v is executed.
Using LANG=en_US as an example.

My questions are:

(1) What must one do to make the locale settings of (b) locales operate

  Your files have been auto-saved.
Use `M-x recover-session' to recover them.

Please report this bug by running the send-pr script included
with XEmacs, or selecting `Send Bug Report' from the help menu.
As a last resort send ordinary email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
*MAKE SURE* to include as much configuration information as
possible; at the very least what OS and hardware you are running
on, and hopefully also what compiler and compiler options the
binary was compiled with, what options XEmacs was compiled with,
whether you are using a prebuilt binary from ftp.xemacs.org or
compiled XEmacs yourself for your system, etc.

  If at all possible, *please* try to obtain a C stack backtrace;
it will help us immensely in determining what went wrong.
To do this, locate the core file that was produced as a result
of this crash (it's usually called `core' and is located in the
directory in which you started XEmacs, or maybe in your home
  directory), and type

gdb /usr/bin/xemacs core

then type `where' when the debugger prompt comes up.
(If you don't have GDB on your system, you might have DBX,
or XDB, or SDB. A similar procedure should work for all of
these. Ask your system administrator if you need more help.)

Netscape Communicator 4.01b6 works fine

1997-07-03 Thread Victor Torrico
The new Netscape Communicator 4.01b6 installs nicely using the Debian
netscape-beta package. It seems to be very stable but then again I
never had problems with Communicator 4.0b5. Of course you must first
delete the /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape link and then make a new soft link to
ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape and all
will be well.

I live off the unstable directory so this may be why Communicator works
OK for me. Who knows?

How does one get a taskbar after installing -10.2.deb version of
 fvwm95?

i had the same problem. You can check that -10.deb is about 500+ K
while -10.2 is about 270K. The reason is that -10.2 is packaged
without modules - no FvwmTaskbar, no FvwmPager etc.

 I've downgraded to -10.deb

 OK

Guess I will also downgrade to -10.deb which works fine for me. Perhaps
the FvwmTaskbar and FvwmPager will be packaged seperately in the near
future. There must be a reason they were omitted from -10.2. Another
of life's little mysteries.

Thanks for your reply.

For a quick test (I assume you use bash), do

 export LANG=en_US

You can then check if it works by

 perl -v

Please do tell me if setting LANG solved your perl problems.

 Ciao,
 Martin

I did as you requested and still get the perl problem. See the
following for my results:

vtorrico# export LANG=en_US
vtorrico# perl -v
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = en_US
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C).

This is perl, version 5.004

PS: Perhaps it is due to using the latest version of Perl? Is it
possible that the LC_ALL and LANG are compiled incorrectly into the
kernel? I am using a recently compiled kernel 2.0.30. I'm getting in
over my depth of knowledge here.

This all seems to have something to do with libc and a wg15-locale

start having this problem if they install StarOffice which has you
set LANG=us. It really does not seem to hurt anything other than
all the trash it puts on your screen when perl programs are run.
As more programs depend on these features, it may become more of an
 issue.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head. It all seems to have started
since I installed StarOffice.

Change your LANG variable to LANG=en_US. That should solve it.

Hi,

I tried putting LANG=en_US in my .bash_profile and still get LANG=us

Sorry for the delay in replying. We have had company recently.

Anyway, it runs fine. The only thing is I'm having a difficult time
creating a menu item for fvwm95 minding, though, that it executes
properly when I just type in swriter3 in an xterm.

The entry in .fvwm95 I'm using looks like all the rest:

 + StarWriter Exec swriter

Would someone be so kind as to post their menu entry for any of the
 StarOffice products.

Second question: There don't appear to be any Debian specific Gotchas.
Has anyone run across something that could be hiding in the wings.

Oh yeah. One other thing. I'm curious to know if Debian has inquired
with StarDivision regarding distributing StarOffice as a Debian package
 and what resulted.

 Thanks

Hi,

Where does one download StarOffice? Is Motif required or does Lesstiff
do the job?

Thanks,

You hit the nail on the head and fixed my problem. I was using dpkg
(1.4.0.14) and this was causing the problem. I purged and reinstalled
sysklogd (-15 package) using dpkg (1.4.0.8) and all was well. No more
core dumps and segmentation faults. Thanks bunches!

The new dpkg (1.4.0.15) seems to have corrected the problem. sysklogd
package works fine now after I purged and reinstalled it using dpkg
(1.4.0.15). Haven't used all the functions of this new dpkg yet so don't
know how well it works.
