still have smtp logging disabled and still have not had a failure since

I have been having the same issue or incidents would be better
phrasing.

I have a busy server, 4000 + boxes plus many off-site scrubbing
services.

I have had three incidents in the past month, the first two were
directly related to smtp crashing and not restarting.

I have not had the smtp issue since installing HF2 for 8.2 . Since that
point I have had one incident that was very different than the first
two. There have been no SMTP warnings in event log, no SMTP error 1455
(out of memory) in logs since the HF2.

The only thing I could trace this one to is in the Declude logs. The
logs indicated it could not move spam to hold directory.

This incident required a hard boot of the server, external access was
cut off.

Declude support has indicated they are seeing this as a possible issue.

Normally, I would not quote tech support on a list and I am not blaming
Declude for this issue. But this may be very helpful towards resolution
of this issue:

Chris,

We are currently looking into an issue where the HOLD directive does not
work properly. My first suspicion, since you have mentioned HOLD, is
that it is related to this same issue. It is possible that the hold
directory is not being created correctly or that the name being passed
to that routine is invalid.

This is very interesting - Can you verify in the task manager that when
it hangs that the memory in use by SMTPd is 'normal'? (7 to 20
Megabytes)

I wouldn't be surprised by some type of logging problem. I
occasionally
see truncated/incomplete log lines in the file. This would certainly
seem
to be some sort of bug related to logging.

yes, indeed the task manager shows normal operation, nothing in the event
logs and nothing coincidental in the last lines of the SMTP logs before the
service hangs

no time consistant time interval between failures, sometimes it was minutes,
sometime hours, sometimes days

Neither Windows nor the Imail monitor service are able to restart the
service after failure detection (does that ever work? :)

odd thing is that I have two filtering gateways running the exact software
revisions of windows and Imail/Declude and I can run the logging without
incident, its just this one host behind the gateways

I had the same problem with SMTP not being able to restart due to
virtual memory according to the event log. I had to reboot to gain SMTP
services.

I have had another instance since applying HF2, but the SMTP portion of
the issue was not the same. The event log did not indicate SMTP
failures.

I opened a ticket with Ipswitch but they blamed it on Declude, as usual.

Yes!

We have an existing case open with Ipswitch. They were supposed to call
this past Tuesday with a resolution but we haven't heard anything as of
today (6/3). Their developers were aware of the problem and have been
trying to resolve it for us since May 30.

A few questions to the customers having this issue.
Add another customer to the list!

What version of Windows are you using?
Windows 2000 Server

What SP's are installed?
SP4

What version of Declude are you using?
1.82

What version of IMail are you using?
8.20

What hot fixes have you applied to IMail?
HF1

How long before you see this resource problem?
Problem occurs based on occasional large outbound mailings generated on
another server.

Does your scanner software automatically update itself (not definitions but
the software itself)
Nope. Using F-Prot 3.16b for Windows. I manually upgrade the scanner
software on the server.

When did this start happening? Did ANY kind upgrade happen? Win, Declude,
IMail, Scanner?
After upgrade to IMail 8.20! no changes to Windows, Declude, or F-Prot.

Any else you suspect or find odd.

Summary: This definitely happened to us after upgrading to IMail 8.20.
Before that, no problems in our setup. I am guessing that their new
threading is causing the issue. We generate large broadcast messages to
various groups of our employees and volunteers. Some weekly messages have
1000 - 2500 recipients. These are generated on another server and sent to
the mail server. After a certain point, the mail server gets overwhelmed.
I get a message that the server is running low on virtual memory. After
that is when the insufficient resources messages involving Declude appear.
I always have to restart the SMTP service in IMail. Reducing the # of
mailing threads on the other server did not help.

A recap:

5 people including me have reported having this problem in the last week or
so.

One of those does not use AVG.

Alex has reported to me that since disabling AVG he has not seen the problem
reoccur in 1 1/2 days.

I have not disabled AVG as I do not think it is the culprit. My server has
been running since Sunday night.

Now, Sunday night I did make a registry change that has to do with kernel
page usage. I do not remember what it was right now but I can find it
easily.

I am running performance monitor on my server to see if it catches anything
when this happens again, if it happens again.

I seen this start last Friday, I have been running this setup for months.
I have had to take out most all of my filters as they seem to take up CPU

The only other service running is Tight VNC. and it's access is restricted
to our LAN. and only two people have this access.

All Imail service seemed to operate in a normal manner during this time.
The only reason I noticed it was I tried to rename the Declude Log file. (It
becomes 1.3 GB everyday) I do this several times a day to keep it
manageable.
I was at home doing it through the network. At first I thought it was my
home computer.
I was getting either Insufficient system resources error, Sharing Violation
File may be in use., or an initializing DLL error.

The only other thing I noticed was several times the last couple of weeks
just before this was Declude would stop scanning mail.
There would be no declude information in the headers at all. Just delivered.
I believe I had to reboot the server to get it to take off again.
I don't know it is related or not. But thought I would include it.

Right idea Ralph. We need to all work together to find this, as it happened
again this morning.

What version of Windows are you using?
Windows 2000 server standard

 What SP's are installed?
SP4

What version of Declude are you using?
2.0.6 NOTE: I also tried 2.0.6.14 and it occurred as well.

What version of IMail are you using?
8.20

What hot fixes have you applied to IMail?
None yet.

How long before you see this resource problem?
Aprox 2 days after last restart, usually between 5:30AM and 7:30 AM

Does your scanner software automatically update itself (not definitions
but
 the software itself)
AVG and F-Prot, Yes

 When did this start happening?
Last Friday, 05/20 was first occurrence.

Did ANY kind upgrade happen? Win, Declude, IMail, Scanner?
No, not that I am aware of.

 Your name and phone number
On file.

Any else you suspect or find odd.
Nothing yet.

FYI, I did try the first registry entry found in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q312362 but that has
not helped as it reoccurred. I am now trying the second entry.

Hello John,

I had a Problem on Thursday/Friday/Saturday, the Server finally locked up
with not enough memory.

I had a bad block on my spool drive (checkdisk said orphaned file)
try a chkdsk D: (or whatever it may be :)
it will just check and will keep Imail running.
If it will find errors you should run it with /f to fix the errors.

I think Imail and/or Declude could have caused the problem if there are too
many parallel connections. (I THINK, I'm really not sure :)
We where hardly hit from the german Spam (we filtered it, but the mails came
in).

We run Imail on a Dual Xeon (Intel SR7520JR2 Board), 2 GB RAM, 3*Raid-1
(System/Spool/Mail), 2003 SP1 (since Saturday), Imail 8.15 HF1 (since
Saturday, before 8.14), Declude 1.8

It appears at 6:30 AM I started getting the 2020 event error

However, both the Sniffer and SpamCheck logs show that they

Searching eventid.net finds a bunch of stuff. It appears to be leaning
towards adding a registry setting to decrease the default

I was able to log onto the console, but not able to open

Running Imail 8.20, Declude 2.0.6 (occurred with 2.0.6.14 as well), F-Prot,

Nothing has changed on server in the last 3 weeks.

Chkdsk found errors on 2 of 8 partitions, system and spool. Both are mirrored
on separate drives but have other partitions on those drives. I will try
running chkdsk /f Monday night.

I have 2 page files on 2 separate partitions on 2 separate drives.

While either of these problems may be completely different from what we're
seeing, monitor the usage of your SMTPd service. This has been the culprit
on our system for intermittent memory ballooning.

I had the Problem at 10:56 this morning, about 300 MB RAM was used
(physical: 2G)
Load ~ 10%. I was able to log on, but not to run programs (eventvwr for
example)
I wintailed my sys2305.txt and Imail was working.
I tried to connect to the server via \\ and got not enough serverstorage to
run this command.

Alex

ps: I'll disable AVG, this is the only program that got Updates the last
days.

John,

I had the same problem for the about three days last week. I would get on the
server and couldn't open a thing error initializing .dll Not enough system
resources, etc... I had been running the same setup as you for a while, but
two weeks ago I added AVG as a second scanner and started seeing this issue
last week after an update I had received from AVG. I uninstalled AVG and the
issue went away.

Searching eventid.net finds a bunch of stuff. It appears to be leaning
towards adding a registry setting to decrease the default amount of paged
kernel memory in use, but that is not a real solution.

I was able to log onto the console, but not able to open anything so not
sure what was going on at the time.

Any one have any ideas?
