[Desktop-packages] [Bug 880096] Re: cant change laptop brightness
I found kind of a workaround for this problem. 1. gedit /etc/default/grub 2. change: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi=off 3. sudo update-grub 4. reboot 5. now the brighness controls works but there is no indicator on the upper right corner (I can live with that) I dont know what the option 'acpi=off' exaclty does... so I dont know if it is a valid solution for the problem. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 324233] Re: Network Manager 0.7 doesn't use resolvconf to remove nameserver info if it didn't use resolvconf for adding its nameserver info - wipes /etc/resolv.conf link
Thanks to Paul Smith for explaining (#27) how resolvconf is supposed to work. For a more detailed explanation please read the README file in the resolvconf package. When resolvconf and NM are both installed the current behavior is this: The Ubuntu version of resolvconf immediately returns an error if /etc/resolv.conf is not a symbolic link; otherwise resolvconf runs and then may or may not return an error depending on how things go. If resolvconf returns an error (for any reason) then NM writes information directly to /etc/resolv.conf. This behavior is incorrect for the following reasons. * Resolvconf should not abort if /etc/resolv.conf is not a symlink. Resolvconf does other useful things besides writing /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf. For example, it writes /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf if the dnsmasq package is installed. * NM does not distinguish between /etc/resolv.conf failing to be a symlink and resolvconf returning a non-zero exit code for some other reason. If resolvconf is just returning an error condition that was returned by a hook script then it may not be appropriate to stomp on resolv.conf. The correct behavior is as follows. NM runs resolvconf if it is present. Resolvconf runs whether or not /etc/resolv.conf is a symlink. Furthermore: If /etc/resolv.conf is not a symlink then NM writes resolver configuration information to /etc/resolv.conf. Consistently with the preceding description, the resolvconf program in the upcoming release of the Ubuntu resolvconf package, version 1.63ubuntu1, does not abort if /etc/resolv.conf is not a symlink. Attached is a untested patch indicating how NM should be changed to behave according to the preceding description. Other variants of the patch are possible. With this patch NM writes /etc/resolv.conf if and only if the latter is not a symlink. Another possibility is for NM to write /etc/resolv.conf if and only if the latter is not a symlink, or is a symlink to /run/network-manager/resolv.conf or something like that. I invite interested parties to test a pre-release version of the new Ubuntu resolvconf package which is now available in my PPA: ppa:jdthood/resolvconf (https://launchpad.net/~jdthood/+archive/resolvconf). Please let me know whether or not this package works for you! Who am I? I am one of the maintainers of resolvconf in Debian. I would prefer to leave this work up to Ubuntu folks, but these issues have been left unresolved for years. Something has to be done. ** Patch added: nm-correct-resolvconf-handling.patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/324233/+attachment/2617538/+files/nm-correct-resolvconf-handling.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/324233 Title: Network Manager 0.7 doesn't use resolvconf to remove nameserver info if it didn't use resolvconf for adding its nameserver info - wipes /etc/resolv.conf link Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: network-manager-kde I use vpnc and have resolvconf package loaded to allow vpnc to update dns. Network manager is replacing the symbolic link /etc/resolv.conf - /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf with a new (non-symbolic linked) /etc/resolv.conf this prevents resolvconf from updating DNS settings as it requires resolv.conf to be symbolic-link file. if I delete the /etc/resolv.conf file and symbolic link it to /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf my vpn works fine and updates dns as expected, however if I reboot my machine the symbolic file is replaced by a new file that isn't symbolically linked to resolvconf/run/resolv.conf file. network manager should update the resolv.conf file not replace it. ** Changed in: nautilus Status: New = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/890055 Title: File properties information no longer expands to fit dialog. Now, they are always truncated to about 50% of the dialog's default width. See attached screen-shot. This is a horrible usability problem and makes the Search (Ctrl-F) feature almost useless - I cannot track down the file's location. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 873545] Re: No GTK theme applied on login
I don't think the buttons for the theme appeared for my install until i changed the following default setting in dconf-editor: /org/gnome/desktop/applications/interface/buttons_have_iconstrue (default is false) screensaver/idle-activation-enabled true Also i had to make sure the xsettings in gconf-editor were set to true and I had to change the key so that nautilus didn't control the desktop (so no drag and drop icons on the desktop from nautilus) Other wise my cpus were cooking and install was freezing all the time. Oh and i had to create a couple of symlinks for the unity icons - seems there was a change of name from groups to categories preventing .desktop items to be found for non-standard applications i used in 11.04. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 873545] Re: No GTK theme applied on login
Even though this is not relevant, i'll continue with my rant: I also had to ensure that the compiz plugin gtk had been checked in ccsm at least once. The compiz plugin wallpaper had to be checked and set to be identical to the wallpaper set in system settings otherwise the dash was always on the bottom of the windows stack with the super button was pressed. I still can't get the rotating cube viewport switcher to work without flashing but the default wall works so there's no need to have an epileptic fit. But i'm still getting the dbus warnings (don't know the cause yet) and glib-gobject errors and indexing errors when nautilus is opened but not to the same extent as immediately after the upgrade. This has prevented me from opening very large documents to work on. Another victory for those who advise against upgrades in favour of new installs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873545 Title: No GTK theme applied on login Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I just updated to Ubuntu 11.10 - and everything looked perfectly okay - except Nautilus! Maybe this is related to Bug #873787 because the error message is similar, and Banshee will start consuming a lot of CPU, and should be killed. is true in my case as well. But /apps/banshee-1/interface/panes/albumartist/browser/top/position is set to 201 in my case. It would be nice for evolution to support this as well. I am able to send HTML PGP encrypted email to Thunderbird users without a problem. I just can't reciprocate. Loading bar hangs at earliest stage. WORKAROUND: add 127.0.0.1 hostname localhost hostname.(none) (without quotes) to /etc/hosts. The issue is that ever since OpenOffice 3.2.1 (NOT 3.2.0), the application attempts to use a hacky protocol to connect to the internet instead of the host's machine for some reason at an early stage during its load. Equally strange is that it only rears its head in kubuntu, as far as I know. Problem existed since Kubuntu 10.04 including latest up-to-date 11.04, all architectures, OpenOffice versions 3.2.1 through LibreOffice 3.3.1. When offline, the problem does not appear at all. Multiple resolutions, systems, graphics cards, architectures, packages tested, all with same result. It is unlikely that the software transmits enough information to any resolvable location on the internet to comprise a security breach, but the possibility of erroneously transmitting user information across the internet instead of the local machine may comprise a risk of some sort. Also, recall that Oracle took over OpenOffice at the first version that exhibits this strange, crippling showstopper, so cause for alarm (paranoia) may be warranted, though it is highly unlikely. I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop. Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of Ubuntu. However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss, very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically unusable. I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar logs from the T500 also if required. But quite frequently, while drawing, GIMP seems to wrongly read the coordinates of the stylus (as zeros, or negative values?), resulting in frequent, random 'line-peaks' in the direction of the left and upper image edges. With this bug it is hard to even use the tablet, since these problems are very frequent (see the exemplary image attached). The tablet works with no problems in MyPaint. The bug is reproducible in both Unity-2d and Unity-3d. I also notice the CPU usage increasing dramatically during drawing with any brush. Steps to reproduce: 1. Connect the Wacom Bamboo One tablet 2. See the screenshot attached. I'm using the default theme and fonts at the resolution of 1024x768. The mouse pointer doesn't appear in the screenshot; it was just pointing to the selected entry. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open Firefox. 2. In the search bar, select the Google search engine icon and type in a common word that is not too short. 3. A drop-down list from Google Suggest appears which contains several indistinguishable suggestions, because for each suggestion, only the first word is displayed, and the rest is replaced with an ellipsis (...) because of the shortage of horizontal space. You can only see the full suggestions as tool-tips, which is poor usability for the Suggest feature. Expected behavior: Make the drop-down list wider to accommodate its content as necessary. I experienced this bug, and I have found a temporary fix (I use Oneiric): I don't know if it works the GUI way, but since I prefer the command- line anyways: -You Must be An Administrator on your local machine sudo apt-get remove banshee # Do NOT use --purge sudo apt-get install banshee sudo shutdown -r now # You could also use 'sudo reboot now' -You Must be An Administrator on your local machine Or we could summarize it on one line (This installs a few extensions too, and it also updates your other packages - because this is what I used | Copy and paste this on one line in the Terminal) : sudo apt-get remove banshee; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install banshee banshee-extension-soundmenu banshee-extension- ubuntuonemusicstore; sudo apt-get upgrade; shutdown -r now I was actually pretty amazed no one tried reinstalling. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to banshee in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883023 Title: Banshee silently crashes during play Status in Banshee Music Player: Unknown Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “mono-zeroconf” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in “banshee” source package in Oneiric: Invalid Status in “mono-zeroconf” source package in Oneiric: Fix Committed Status in “banshee” source package in Precise: Invalid Status in “mono-zeroconf” source package in Precise: Fix Released Bug description: Banshee crashes when a DAAP server vanishes. When you perform the above one-line fix by me, it's a good idea to close all other applications, otherwise it might not update right, also, I found a mistake, here is the correct version: sudo apt-get remove banshee; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install banshee banshee-extension-soundmenu banshee-extension- ubuntuonemusicstore; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo shutdown -r now -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to banshee in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883023 Title: Banshee silently crashes during play Status in Banshee Music Player: Unknown Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “mono-zeroconf” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in “banshee” source package in Oneiric: Invalid Status in “mono-zeroconf” source package in Oneiric: Fix Committed Status in “banshee” source package in Precise: Invalid Status in “mono-zeroconf” source package in Precise: Fix Released Bug description: Banshee crashes when a DAAP server vanishes. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 877448] Re: Problems launcher with LibreOffice
The libreoffice 'start screen' fails to build properly on my system also (a fresh 10.10 install, upgraded to 11.04 and then to 11.10). Not a huge problem, but unsightly and annoying. I was going to write a 'bug report' on this myself. Mr Van Hoorde has saved me a job. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877448 Title: Problems launcher with LibreOffice Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: There are several problems I want to report, problems which occurred after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10. They are all related to LibreOffice and the integration of this application with the OS, esp. Unity. (a) if I try to integrate soffice (i.e. overall screen which shows all LibreOffice components) as a button in the launcher (by dragging from list in dash), it fails to show an icon. Thus it remains a black space, which runs as a link though. Subsequently, when clicking on the black space with the rightside mouse buttonthe normal dark little window opens but does not show the name of the application, which normally is the case (e.g. LibreOffice Writer - Firefox Browser Web) (b) when closing a document in any component of LibreOffice (writer, calc etc...) by clicking on the X at the right top corner, normally the application always turns to the soffice survey page with all components. This page now is very instable: parts of the closed page are still visible at the side and bottom of the sreen. Moreover when starting from soffice, the screen has not its normal lay-out (white rectangle on a grey-blue background). The background turns to white at both sides and at the bottom of the screen. (c) more disturbing is that when opening a document in one of the LibreOffice components, the launcher fails to indicate that a window of the application is already active (little arrows at the side of the launcher buttons). Thus one can lose track of an opened document, which can cause problems (erroneous cancellation, doublework etc...) (c) with maximised windows of LibreOffice components (soffice, swriter etc...) often fails to show the three symbols to close, minimize and maximise', the only possibility to close the application is throug the menu of the application itself (File - Exit) (d) Sometimes a document in one of the LibreOffice components is active, but if we activate the launcher by moving the mouse to the left screen side, it doesn't show the icon of the active application. It just doesn't seem to be there. If I'm not mistaken, this problem has already been reported by others as well.
