  resolving.

  That breaks the default bind9 and dnsmasq installations, for people that 
actually want to install a DNS server.
  Having to manually comment out #dns=dnsmasq in 
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf doesn't sound good, and if it stays 
that way, it should be moved to the bind9 and dnsmasq postinst scripts.

  Please make network-manager smarter so that it checks if bind9 or
  dnsmasq are installed, so that it doesn't start the local resolver in
  that case.

  Running a fresh install of Xubuntu Natty 32-bit, if I log in then launch 
Thunar (1.2.1-3ubuntu2), Thunar will not appear right away, and the desktop 
workspace will be unresponsive (excluding panels  other applications).  Thunar 
eventually appears around 20 seconds later (est.), usually accompanied by the 
following error popup:

  Launch Error
  The folder could not be opened
  Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did 
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply 
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

  In the accompanying instance of Thunar, the Network item is missing
  from the side pane shortcut view.

  Depending on how long I've waited, usually the second or third Thunar
  launch attempt comes up very quickly, and the Network shortcut is
  present in the side pane.

I still have this issue 5.2.2.2 on my stable Precise PC, however it
should not take too long to get the fix, as I was the one who fixed it
and proposed a merge[1], which seems to be merged into 5.2, but
unfortunately I couldn't find when it has been released, I couldn't find
a changelog entry for it.

the problem this would help solve would be for example to easily assign a full 
screen application, be it a webapp in a browser or a presentation, to a 
seperate display output channel, all this being done by an ordinary user with 
no expert knowledge on a desktop window management level.

the alterternative would be to write xorg.conf from scratch, and that
means the user has to work with the command line to assign a specific
picture to a specific output and the user must learn the extremely
poorly documented configuration language of xorg.conf

  Binary package hint: gnome

  When I plug in a monitor to my notebook (ubuntu 9.04) I can mirror my
  image or enlarge my desktop to display something on the second device
  with gnome-display-properties.

  I think that it should be possible to display different virtual
  desktops on different devices. If I have 4 virtual desktops, I should
  be able to display first desktop on one device, second desktop on
  another one etc. I should also be able to change displays on different
  devices separately.

Commenting on Bryce's request for a use case for this.

One use case would be how I use the Awesome window manager at work: I
have two physical screens, on one I can have my text editor doing
whatever programming is needed, on the other I switch between a
workspace (called tag in awesome) containing terminal windows, a
workspace containing documentation and a workspace with the
webpage/application I'm working on.

I would use Awesome at home as well, if it wasn't for that it's not very
user-friendly, and it will be a problem when my wife wants to use the
computer.

  resolving, network manager now starts a dnsmasq instance for local DNS
  resolving.

  That breaks the default bind9 and dnsmasq installations, for people that 
actually want to install a DNS server.
  Having to manually comment out #dns=dnsmasq in 
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf doesn't sound good, and if it stays 
that way, it should be moved to the bind9 and dnsmasq postinst scripts.

  Please make network-manager smarter so that it checks if bind9 or
  dnsmasq are installed, so that it doesn't start the local resolver in
  that case.

  For Ubuntu 12.04, System Settings (gnome-control-center and gnome-
  settings-daemon) was patched to continue to support the gconf keyboard
  shortcuts used by Unity, Unity 2D, and the GNOME Classic sessions.
  Unfortunately, GNOME Shell now uses gsettings keyboard shortcuts so
  GNOME Shell ignores keyboard shortcut changes that get entered into
  System SettingsKeyboardShortcuts.

  This should be fixed for Ubuntu 12.10 but it's too late and
  complicated to fix for Ubuntu 12.04.

  Run dconf-editor
  Look in org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings or org.gnome.mutter.keybindings

It just occurred to me that if we are going to change someone's listen
address then it might be better to give 127.0.0.1 to nm-dnsmasq and
127.0.1.1 to the standalone nameserver.

Consider the case where nm-dnsmasq is running on a machine, nemo, that
happens to run the nameserver for the LAN.  /etc/hosts on nemo contains
either

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 nemo

or

127.0.0.1 localhost
10.1.2.3 nemo

where 10.1.2.3 is nemo's external IP address.

Other machines in the LAN access nemo via 10.1.2.3 for their general
name service.  If they are Ubuntu machines they also access their local
nm-dnsmasq instances via the loopback address.  It's nicely symmetrical
if processes on nemo itself also use the loopback address to access the
local nm-dnsmasq and use either the public address, 10.1.2.3 or its
substitute, 127.0.1.1, for general name service.

Perhaps this is only an aesthetic question.

Simon: Can we arrange by means of the file in /etc/dnsmasq.d/ that the
standalone dnsmasq listens on 127.0.1.1 rather than 127.0.0.1?

Alkis: Suppose your host, foo, has external IP address 10.1.2.3 and runs
a standalone nameserver which listens on eth0.  Configure things such
that nm-dnsmasq on foo uses 10.1.2.3 as its upstream nameserver;
configure the standalone nameserver on foo not to listen on lo.  If it's
dnsmasq, start it with --except-interface=lo.  Does this do what you
want?

If so then this may be a very simple way to deal with #959037, at least
with respect to dnsmasq.  Network-manager simply drops a file with

except-interface=lo

into /etc/dnsmasq.d/.  NM can still use the local standalone dnsmasq via
the external network interface, the address of which it may receive from
the DHCP server, for example.

Hmm, just tested this myself.  You can't use except-interface=lo; it
seems you have to use listen-address=10.1.2.3.  Perhaps Simon knows a

I experience this issue also with Ubuntu 12.04 and DVD playback. When I
try to play a DVD video (.VOB/MPEG 2 Video (as Totem said)) with Totem
it's choppy and seeking is very slow. Otherwise VLC works perfect and
smoothly.

  When trying to play MP4 videos captured from my Galaxy Nexus and
  copied to the local hard drive, video playback in Totem is choppy.
  VLC has no problem.

  Videos used to work fine in Totem in Natty and Oneiric.  It appears
  that Totem is maxing out the core upon which it's running (cpu usage
  just over 25%... between 26% and 28% on a quad-core system).

  My video setup is dual nVidia GeForce 580 GTX's in SLI (SLI is not
  active), with dual monitors, using nvidia's driver (NOT
  nouveau...separate story - it fails miserably and locks up every
  time).

  I'm not sure how to gather additional information to help debug the
  issue, but if you ask, I can definitely try to provide as much
  information as possible.  I've attached a short  example video that
  should suffice to illustrate the issue.

  Doesn't happen 100% of the time, but quite easy to tackle:
  test case

  1. start a non pinned app e.g. system monitor
  2. open terminal and type 'killall bamfdaemon; /usr/lib/bamf/bamfdaemon

  What happens:
  you see two icons of system monitor in launcher

  - This case is fixed, but:
  For example, try to run an application with no desktop file (i.e. Xclock, 
valkyrie...) then kill bamfdaemon: the icons will be duplicated.

  I just using mail client - thunderbird, I close it. When I open
  thunderbird again, next icon appears in unity, while both icons
  forwarding to this one instance of thunderbird. After right click on
  the icon in unity panel, there is blank line instead app name on the
  newly created icon. I guess it'll happen with more apps.

  Another case:
  TEST CASE:
  1. open a single instance of an application
  2. killall bamfdaemon
   - when bamfdaemon will respawn, 2 arrows will appear on the launcher, 
alt-tab think there are two instances as well.
  Not that in 5.4, some icons are doubled (no more double arrows)

  Unity Issue test case:
  1. Open gnome-control-center
  2. killall bamfdaemon

  libbamf issue test case:
  1. Open xclock
  2. killall bamfdaemon

  expected:
   - when bamfdaemon reconnect, only one instance in launcher/alt+tab is seen.

I would say that the size is totalled, maybe you have checked some really small 
addons: try with Firefox: if you select any of the unchecked addons, (assuming 
that you already have FF installed) the total size will show x MB to download, 
and the size to download grows with each selected addon (as these are quite 
big). However when selecting addons it hides the on disk size, and only 
displays to download and when installed size.
But for example with Geany (I don't have it installed), when I select the 
geany-plugins addon, the total size grows, as expected. Regardless of all this, 
I am setting this to confirmed and Low, as the installation state bar is still 
above the total size, and the total size is still between the package-specific 
information for the app.

  Ubuntu Software Center trunk r3029

  According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#add-ons, the
  add-ons state bar -- the one with Install or Cancel and Apply
  Changes buttons, that appears if you make changes to the add-ons
  selection for an application -- should appear below both the list of
  add-ons *and* the Version/Total size/License/Updates data.

  The rationale is so that you can see the size of the application
  *plus* whichever add-ons you have selected. That's why the label is
  Total size rather than just Size.

  However, the size currently isn't totalled. And even if it was, it
  would be strange for the size to be a total while Version,
  License, and Updates still apply to one package only.

  The installation state bar currently appears above the Version/Total
  size/License/Updates data.

  This design needs to be fixed, and once fixed, implemented.

  3.4, but both lead to 12.10 with kernel 3.4.0-5 (as per uname -r)

So, any other idea as to why Evince cannot print the above PDFs? I know
Launchpad states that only 3 people are affected. But my whole office
has been having that problem for three years or so and most have already
moved on to proprietary software. Because, you know, that works.

Please note I'm not just bitching around. I'm able and willing to help
if anybody could get me started. Apparently it's not even easy for
Evince developers to pinpoint the issue so a little help would be
awesome.

I tested bind-interfaces and except-interface=lo in the past (comment
#26), it worked as advertised. I haven't yet tested them in the chained
dnsmasq mode, but I guess it would work if I'm using a static IP (which
isn't always the case for LTSP servers, some teachers use their laptops
for LTSP servers). With a dynamic IP, I'd have to open the NM-connection
editor all the time to update my primary DNS server. So a loopback
address for the dnsmasq service would be preferred locally, while the
non-loopback one would again be required for the LTSP clients.

 Network-manager simply drops a file with
except-interface=lo

What I meant in comment #51 is that libvirt then won't be able to ship with
 except-interface=lxcbr0
because it's a syntax error to specify 2 except-interface directives. Maybe it 
could be allowed in some future dnsmasq version, with the list of declared 
interfaces being merged.

Further findings.

I think the reason why x-gvfs-show doesn't work is that package util-
linux needs to be upgraded to 2.21+ to support the x-gvfs options.

In the meantime I tried changing the option in my /etc/fstab to comment
=gvfs-show, which seems to be the way to do it for older versions of
util-linux. mount -a then worked immediately (I got one icon per volume)
but after a reboot I still get two icons as per bug #1010858.

But as regards *this* bug, the real fault is that it's depending on a
feature in util-linux-2.21+ and that package hasn't (yet, presumably)
been updated yet.

  was reporting a separate bug #1010858 about double icons appearing for
  mounted filesystems, and it occurred to me that it was happening for
  volumes I had listed in /etc/fstab with uhelper=udisks, the mechanism
  i used in previous versions to mount internal drives and see them in
  launcher etc.

  In investigating, I found the apparently-new gnome-disk-utility
  Disks and that seems to have new options for doing this properly,
  but when I tried to use them in closest-to-default way, it failed.

  The attached screenshot shows the options I had set on a volume. Below
  is the line that generated in /etc/fstab:

  LABEL=Spinner /mnt/Spinner auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

  It fails to mount when you try to mount it in the disk utility. An
  error dialogue opens with:

  Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sdg1: Command-line `mount 
/mnt/Spinner' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad 
option, bad superblock on /dev/sdg1,
 missing codepage or helper program, or other error
 In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
 dmesg | tail  or so

   (udisks-error-quark, 0)

  or missing value

  I expect the bug isn't so much in the disk utility app itself as in
  the underlying mount tools that have probably been compiled without a
  required option, but the user experience is that it fails when using
  the disk utility, hence reporting it here for now.

  I suspect I can make this work a different way using prior knowledge,
  to make it mount in /media and using uhelper=udisks2 - will be trying
  that in a moment - but this seemed the logical, minimal way to proceed
  for the new utility and it failed.

Hey Till,  could you have a look if there is anything wrong on the cups
side there? The rendering and print previews are fine but the printing
leads to missing images

@Matthias: thanks for caring, we lack people knowing well the poppler,
cairo stack to help there though, the upstream bug is a better place to
move forward on that front ... they seem to suggest it does render fine
with the current trunk of everything but as far as I understand
rendering was not an issue, not sure if they tested printing as well

  After I unlocked some applications from the launcher (Google Chrome,
  LibreOffice Writer, LibreOffice Impress, etc), the icons of some of
  them e.g Google Chrome and LibreOffice Writer don't show on the
  launcher, even after I run them (e.g from dash). So, when I minimize
  them I can't find them to restore their windows because their icons
  aren't on the launcher, so I lose them. I can only get back to them
  with Super+W. That happened with most of the applications I unlocked,
  but not all (e.g not with LibreOffice Impress).

Title:
  Item stops showing up on taskbar after being trashed and restored

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  1) Create a desktop shortcut
  2) Launch it - this should create a specific entry on the left taskbar.
  3) Lock the task to the taskbar.
  4) Close it.
  5) Move the desktop shortcut to the trash.  (This should also get rid of the 
locked item in the taskbar, and does.)
  6) Move the trashed shortcut back to the desktop.
  7) Launch the process.

  Note that the application--which is now running--should show up in the
  launcher, but it doesn't. This does not *always* happen, but it almost
  always does; repeat the steps and it happens 3 out of 4 times.

  Step 1) is being done in the following way:
  1) Launch Chrome.
  2) Navigate somewhere.
  3) Find the File menu; not in Chrome, but in the top bar, mac-style.
  4) Create an Application shortcut on the desktop (NOT the launch bar). If 
this doesn't show up (and it comes and goes), try switching application focus. 
If it's grayed out, navigate to a different site.
  5) Right-click on the new application shortcut and select Properties.
  6) Change the icon to one of the ones under /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome.
  7) Rename the shortcut
  8) Delete the portion of the command that navigates to the site you don't 
care about
  9) Set the command as desired (eg, --user-data-dir=something)
  10) Close

Gedit Unity Launcher Inconsistency

This bug is easy to see, but hard to describe. I've read all about Unity
terminology at:

However, there is no mention for the little white dots for when you run an
application. I will just refer to these as white dots for this bug report.
Anyhow, back to the actual bug. Launch Gedit. Notice how the white dots appear
next to it in the launcher. Now, lock it to the launcher. Close Gedit. Now,
launch it again. Notice that no white dots appear next to it in the launcher.
Now, unlock it from the launcher. Go to the Unity Dash and search for gedit and
launch it again. Now, it won't even appear in the Unity launcher. I will upload
a screenshot or two momentarily.

0.9.4 got into precise but I could not find any documentation about how
to configure bonding with it.

Unfortunately I have found some mention by the upstream developers that 
currently only Red Hat based systems are supported (if I have understood this 
correctly):

setting up a bond0 interface.

  I'm watching a movie, accessed via sshfs from my desktop box over the wired 
interface.  I get hungry, so I decide to move my laptop to my kitchen and 
continue watching the movie while cooking.  The sshfs connection should 
seamlessly stay alive, such that I don't have to restart mplayer.

  -- A sketch of a solution:
  Look at the IP address and netmask of available interfaces.  If two 
interfaces lie within the same network, ask the user whether to try enabling 
bonding.  If yes, modprobe bonding mode=1, set up bond0, enslave eth0 and eth1 
(say) with the fastest being the primary.  Let the user say always bond, 
always bond for $ESSID, never bond, never bond for $ESSID after testing 
whether it works.

  -- Taking this one step further:
  Support other values of mode= for the bonds.  Don't do this only for 
wired+wifi, but any number of wired and wifi interfaces.  Try to diagnose and 
repair (or suggest repairs for) any problems that occur while trying to bond.

  Bug first appeared last week after updating to Firefox 10 using
  Synaptic. Original symptom was crashing Firefox when navigating a site
  I'm developing (which logs a lot to console in development
  environment). Further discovery indicated that I could crash Firefox

Bug description:
  Bug first appeared last week after updating to Firefox 10 using
  Synaptic. Original symptom was crashing Firefox when navigating a site
  I'm developing (which logs a lot to console in development
  environment). Further discovery indicated that I could crash Firefox
  by clicking on the DOM tab in Firebug. At that point, I re-installed
  Firefox, created a new profile, re-installed Firebug and could still
  reproduce the crash. I created a new user on my system, repeated the
  prior steps, same result. After some searching, I found these

There are several reasons why we decided to build the SDK against the
system CRT msvcrt.dll, but the most important one is that if you decide
to link against any of the VS ones you will be forced to distribute
broken software.

According to MS EULA you can't distribute yourself this system library
(eg: msvcr100.dll) so your software is depending on a third party
installer (Microsoft Visual C++ 20XX Redistributable Package). The GPL
also forbids explicitely the redistribution of System Libraries
(http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.en.html#WindowsRuntimeAndGPL).

How is this handled in Firefox?

There is the option of rebuilding the SDK linking against msvcr100.dll,
this would require on our side providing a gcc spec that links against
moldnames100 and msvcr100 and rebuilding gcc so that libgcc_s_sjlj-1.dll
and libstdc++6.dll are linked against the new CRT and using the gcc spec
in the toolchain.

We ship the CRT files alongside our app. I don't think your reading of
the EULA is correct. Those files are explicitly listed as
redistributable, and historically you have been allowed to ship the
DLL files with your application.

The GPL wrinkle is tricky, that sounds like a big PITA. In any event, we
ship Firefox under the MPL, so it's not an issue for us.

Apparently I was hitten by this bug when I last read the EULA:
http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/KB956414. But indeed it's very clear

  There no any way to make extra keyboard layout to be accessible/visible in 
keyboard layout choice dialog. So it is impossible to use Unity keyboard 
configuration tool to set an extra keyboard layout (such as Iran: Avestan; 
Lithuania: Dvorak; USA: International (AltGr Unicode combining|alternative), 
Atsina, Couer D'alene Salish; Romania: Ergonomic Touchtype; Serbia: Combining 
accents instead of dead keys; Russia: Church Slavonic, RUU; etc.).
  KDE4 loads these layouts without any user actions.
  GNOME2 makes these layouts visible in keyboard setting dialog through 
enabling load-extra-items option.
  But Unity can't do this in any way. (furthermore, as ~/.Xkbmap settings 
ignoring or overriding by DE, it is impossible to set extra keyboard layout at 
all without making startup script)

  same file multiple times (when trying to open the file), all the
  instances hang on launch.

  If you quickly try open the a video file repeatedly, before the first
  instance launches, you can recreate this behaviour.

Can confirm this on two different machines and on Unity2D and 3D. Issue

  As I installed my OS last days new, a few times that PC is shown
  multiple times in Software Center Sync between Computers It has
  always the same name and is listed a few times. How can I remove some
  of it? I am also scared that my buyed software will not be installable
  via Softwarecenter some time then (?)

seb128, I cannot reproduce this bug on Precise. I have Precise with all
updates and I have printed Abschlussarbeit.pdf out of evince on three
different printer types (PostScript, CUPS Raster, Foomatic/pxlmono) and
the printouts are all correct, with the image.

I do not have Lucid at hand but there it is possible that images can be
missing in printouts from evince, as older versions of Ghostscript have
a bug which leads to images in some PDF input files being dropped.

  This bug happens on Ubuntu Dapper 64-bit running the GNOME desktop
  environment.  I have not tested it on Edgy or KDE.

  When running some full screen games, the ALT+TAB shortcut will not
  minimize the window and you are forced to exit in order to return to
  the desktop.  Full screen games I have found this to be true in
  include Tremulous (www.tremulous.net), Nexuiz (www.nexuiz.com),
  Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, and Unreal Tournament 2004
  (http://www.unrealtournament.com/ut2004/).

  TO REPRODUCE THIS BUG:

  1.  Open up one of the above listed games.
  2.  Attempt to minimize the game with the ALT + TAB shortcut.

Also of possible interest.  On my system I have three devices of class
backlight:

Each of these devices has a file inside called brightness.  The way these 
files change is interesting and suggests there is a 
probelem/confusion/interaction among acpi_video0 and acpi_video1

I could see what happens with the following command:

 watch -d -n 0.1 cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness  cat
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video1/brightness  cat
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

then watching how the values change in reaction to brightness
keypresses.

The intel_backlight/brightness value stands fixed at 497

The acpi_video0/brightness and acpi_video1/brightness values are normally not 
the same. 
e.g. the following happens:

Values are:
6 -- 7

then I do one Fn+ArrowUP keypress for increasing brighness.  After 1s, values 
become (but brightness does not change):
8 -- 7

Then after 1s and at 0.5s intervals, they change to
8 -- 9
8 -- 10
8 -- 11

One thing it always happens is that after a single keypress of
brightness up (down), the first value acpi_video0/brightness gets the
value of acpi_video1/brightness plus (minus) one, respectively.

Then acpi_video1/brightness continues to change in the same direction.
