Bug description:
Since 12.04 NetworkManager uses the dnsmasq plugin by default to
resolve DNS requests. Unfortunately the dnsmasq plug-in has --no-
hosts, etc. hard coded [1] which means (among other things) that after
the upgrade to 12.04 /etc/hosts will no longer be used to resolve DNS
requests. This changes the prior behavior of NetworkManager without
any visible warning to the end user. AFAICS there's no other way to
work around this problem as to manually revert the change and disable
the dnsmasq plug-in in the NetworkManager config, see [2,3]:

To turn off dnsmasq in Network Manager, you need to edit
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and comment the 'dns=dnsmasq'
line then do a 'sudo restart network-manager'.

This is of course not a bug in the NetworkManager which just behaves
as intended. The problem is in the change of the configuration of the
Ubuntu packaging which will probably leave many wondering why their
/etc/hosts suddenly no longer works. This cost me considerable time to
debug and probably is a usability problem for others, too.

Maybe you could provide a more visible documentation than that in [3]?
E.g., *including a comment in /etc/hosts that explains the change* and
how to work around it would have saved me a lot of time. It would have
automatically alerted me on upgrade as manual changes to /etc/hosts
would then have triggered a prompt while leaving those users with
standard /etc/hosts in peace.

Probably similar problems arise with other disabled config files and
could be alerted to the users? Thinking of resolv.conf, etc.

Yes, that is because the libc resolver consults /etc/hosts without doing
a DNS lookup.

AFAIK /etc/hosts is in not directly linked to dnsmasq
and it doesn't matter whether DNS lookups are done
externally or not.

The standalone dnsmasq (i.e., the dnsmasq that runs when the dnsmasq
package is installed) does consult /etc/hosts when resolving names.

thus for host name lookups the libc resolver looks first at /etc/hosts.

Try this yourself. Add the line

1.2.3.4 foo

to /etc/hosts and then try ping foo.

  NVidia driver installed, it appears that the blue and red channels are
  swapped so the colours look messed up.. It's the 180 driver that was

  The normal desktop, X and Compiz work fine... the problem is only with
  video playback.

Breadcrumbs can be mistaken for a tab bar

1. Look at the panel at the top of the screen. Click on your username.
2. Select user accounts from the menu.

A window opens - see screenshot. At the top, there is All Settings
and User accounts.

I'm not used to Ubuntu. (I use KDE more). My first impression is
that this is some sort of tab bar, with two options. If I remember my
interfaces right, I think Mac users might have an even stronger
impression of this. And I'm not particularly expecting a two-item
breadcrumb navigation bar, because I haven't done any navigation;
I've only just opened a new window.

As a result, while exploring the dialog, our user clicks on all
settings to see what the other tab means. He's rewarded with a sea
of icons (the gnome control center :).

A second level of frustration comes in, because this is a bit like
starting a navigational file browser at a specific directory, and then
accidentally going up a level. But unlike Dolphin/Konqueror,
Firefox or Nautilus, there's no quick back button to reverse the
mistake.

  three users exist, 'uadmin', created during installation, 'rsk' and
  'tk', created later, but only 'tk' is visible. It all looks ok from
  looking a the files (unique UIDs, UIDs  1000 etc). Group memberships
  also look right.

I am a first-time user using a new, clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04
LTS (installed on the day of its release) and have installed all of the
recommended updates as they have become available since. I attempted to
use the apt-cache policy pkgname command without success.

Even so, it's a great system!

When I attempt to use xpdf to view or print a PDF document, the
application flashes on the screen, attempting to open and then
disappears. A minute or so later I receive the error-message that I
have taken screenshots of and will attempt to append to this report.

The error-message on screen intrigues me because it tells me there is a
bug and asks me if I wish to report it but gives me no CONTINUE
option. I am relatively new to Ubuntu and am not as up-to-speed as I
would like to be but, after using Mepis for many years, I love its
simplicity and user-friendliness, so am keen to do what I can to solve
any problems I encounter.

I have taken two screenshots of the entire error message and attempted
to append them to this report but it appears that I can append only one
of them. I have attached the first page but can send the second
subsequently, if you think it necessary.

Bug description:
  I can always press the Print screen key to take a screenshot of my
  desktop. When i click on say, the System menu in the gnome-panel, it
  just doesn't work anymore.

  Note: this is in fact only a symptom of bug 10905 that states that no
  hotkeys/shortcuts whatsoever can be triggered when a menu is open.
  there seems to be a dispute if that is a bug or an intended design
  decision. thus bug 10905 and its duplicates always get closed. people
  seem to agree that not being able to take screenshots is not intended
  bahavior and considered a bug. thus this report is allowed to stay
  open :)

  a known workaround for taking screenshots of menus is to directly launch the 
screengrabber with a delay like so:
  gnome-screenshot --delay=5

In my case I've discovered that, if I connect a microphone to the back
mic connector, gnome-control-center detects it but can't get any sound
from it.

If I connect a microphone to the front connection everything works as
expected. So I've used this to workaround this bug.

Note: I've I run alsamixer I can see that when I select rear microphone,
read mic is selected as input source, so it seems to work, but no sound
comes through (it work before the upgrade so I don't think there's any
hardware problem involved).

I cant find any solution after google this bug so i decided to do it
myself

rename the original file gnome-power-statistics to power-statistics

$ sudo mv /usr/bin/gnome-power-statistics /usr/bin/power-statistics

create a new file with name gnome-power-statistics having following
code

#!/bin/bash

if [ $(pidof power-statistics) ] 
then
  kill `pidof power-statistics`
fi
power-statistics
exit

and copy it to /usr/bin
allow it execution
and change owner to root

I m new to bash coding if any good suggestion i appreciate.

  The Ubuntu wallpapers initiative (from Flickr) is a good thing, but the big 
problem for lambda users is that the wallpaper they chose disappears after an 
upgrade of ubuntu, because every 6 months, the selected wallpapers are changed.
  My mother would be very disappointed to see her beautiful wallpaper disappear 
after an upgrade.

  Is there any way to save the one that was defaulted during an upgrade ?
  Or even add a link Previous ubuntu wallpapers in the Appearance window ?

This version features a new, green splash screen with a white progress
bar. The Ubuntu builds have instead an orange progress bar, and while
this worked well with the previous splash screen, now it looks really
ugly and out of place.

Please remove the patch to ubuntify the splash screen. If Ubuntu wants
to customize LibreOffice branding, let's instead do a complete change to
the splash screen and not just the progress bar, that's odd IMHO.

  I don't know why some Icons were replaced by pictograms (is this because of a 
new GTK-Theme?) , this is only in the Linux version of TB, the Windows version 
still has the coloured icons. It would have been better if the old standard 
theme remains untouched, and a new theme would have been created for the new 
blackwhite pictograms.

  See attached screenshot for the weird icons.

  Possible work-around: Download Thunderbird from mozilla, extract a
  file called omni.ja and overwrite the copy at /usr/lib/thunderbird/.

Still happens in Kubuntu Precise. The workaround is to download
Thunderbird from mozilla, extra a file called omni.ja and ovewrite the
copy at /usr/lib/thunderbird/. Not sure if this has undesired effects
(it may delete all your email), but it works for me.

Bug description:
  I'm testing LibreOffice 3.6 RC1 from the LibreOffice pre-releases PPA.
  This version features a new, green splash screen with a white progress
  bar. The Ubuntu builds have instead an orange progress bar, and while
  this worked well with the previous splash screen, now it looks really
  ugly and out of place.

  Please remove the patch to ubuntify the splash screen. If Ubuntu
  wants to customize LibreOffice branding, let's instead do a complete
  change to the splash screen and not just the progress bar, that's odd
  IMHO.

On my system, the scrollbars are unusable because the slider is the same
colour as the background.  They seem to respond to clicks and drags in
the expected way, but of course you don't know where to click or drag if
you can't see the slider!

I am running KDE; perhaps that is the reason why I am affected by this
bug in a rather different way to the other posters.

  other hotheys which are not working too.

  The password/grouppassword are supposed to be saved in the vpnc-plugin
  for network-manager. Once entered and connected NM disconnects again,
  forgets the passwords and they have to be reentered. Then it works
  perfectly and jdoes not disconnect again.

  Passwords are forgotten everytime after suspend, and randomly during
  idle vpn-connection, while doing nothing special.

AMD64.
  The wireless does not work, nor does it even show up.
  The wireless card is a Realtek RTL8192E.
  This is the first wireless problem I have had in a long time.
  The wireless worked fine for the 25 minutes that the machine had Windows on 
it.
  I think that it should work without any problems.

  If I configure the wireless network via the commands:
  sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
  sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid...

  the network is functioning properly even if NM continues to indicate
  inactive.

  If I uninstall nm

  sudo apt-get purge Network-manager

  and then reinstalled with

  sudo apt-get install network-manager

  nm for the next reboot it works correctly. It comes back again to the
  second reboot after installation.

  File /etc/network/interfaces conents:

  The Ethernet interface is handled correctly. 
  By menu on NM-applet on Gnome can not choose enable wireless network

  When I am trying to make an ad-hoc wireless connection in Karmic, it
  crashes the network manager applet (the network icon instantly missing
  from the system tray). Then, it tries to connect, and disconnected
  continuously until I delete the Ad-hoc connection in the Preferences 
  Network Connection app. The Network manager applet in Jaunty was much
  better.

  And, I suggest adding the functionality of creating a GUI internet
  sharing feature on Network manager for the next release (Lucid Lynx).

  For Ubuntu Karmic, please include the repair in Ubuntu Software
  update.

required by wireless network keeps reappearing for no apparent reason.  There 
is no way to reconnect other than restarting the computer.

  What should have happened:
  The wireless network should stay connected.

  What happened instead:
  The wireless connection stopped working and returned an error message that 
can't be resolved unless the whole system is rebooted.  (Logging out and 
logging back in doesn't fix the problem.)

  The message Authentication required by wireless network keeps reappearing 
for no apparent reason.  I had already set the saved password in Network 
Connections - Wireless so it should remember it.  Yet even after it connects 
successfully on a reboot, a couple hours later it will lose connection and then 
ask for the same password again.

  However, retyping in the password in that error window doesn't fix the
  problem.  And when the user goes to the wireless icon on the Top Panel
  and clicks Connect to Hidden Wireless Network, there is no way for
  the user to click on the final Connect button since for some reason
  it's grayed out.  I have attached 2 pictures showing the problem.

  I had set up in Ubuntu 9.04 a network config fixed at
  /etc/netwrking/interfaces in a PC acting as a home printer server SO
  that users just have to switch ON the machine to access the server
  printer and shared folders but do not need to log in as any user.

  All WAS working over a wlan interface (wlan0) on Ubuntu 9.04

  Once I upgraded to 9.10, the network became unstable, disconnected
  most of the time. I have seen the logs at /var/log/syslog and the
  problems SEEMS to be that NetworkManager is NOT ignoring wlan0
  interface as it should because it is being listed in
  /etc/network/interfaces and should be managed manually ONLY.

  The connection is unstable because NetworkManager is competing with
  /etc/init.d/networking to manage the device.

  Once I remove the config at /etc/network/interfaces, NetworkManager
  has the device for itself and manages to give me stable connections.

  How can I force NetworkManager TO IGNORE wlan0?
  Shoud I deinstall it completelly?

  [This is not the first time NetworkManager fails on me when I do not
  seek the default config... is it really worth it?]

  Experiencing random network connection drops, with the connection

  I have two linux systems connected to the internet through the same
  router. A Nokia N810 running meamo linux, and an HP running Kubuntu
  9.10. Over the course of an hour, the Ubuntu 9.10 system drops network
  connection on an average of 8-30 times. The higher the transfer rate,
  the more drops occur. The connection is usually reestablished within 5
  seconds. During the same hour the maemo linux system never drops
  network connection.

  After trying several solutions found on the internet, with no success,
  I replaced network-manager with wicd 1.6.1-3ubuntu1.

  While using wicd, I have not experienced any problems with network
  connection dropping. I believe there is a problem with network-
  manager.

  that works (tries to) with ath9k module.

  It connects to my access point and works ok however, It disconnects every 2-3 
min saying (in dmesg):

  and then automatically reconnects... I have tried different drivers and other 
things

  Interestingly when I right-clicked on network manger applet, select ¨disable 
networking¨ and then set up everything myself on console using iwconfig and 
dhclient. IT WORKS!!!
  no disconnections
  wpa_supplicant is still running in a background but not doing anything (my 
wifi has WEP encryption).

  I´ve seen some similar reports in Internet but they seem to think that
  it is a driver problem when to me it looks like a NetworkManager
  issue...

Title:
  Network manager takes down wireless router at startup

Bug description:

  After upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10, the wireless network often doesn't work
  after the computer is started, restarted, or waken up from standby.
  The worst thing is that the wireless router/ADSL modem is affected, so
  that a wire-connected desktop, using Windows on the same router looses
  internet access too. When a hardware WLAN switch button is pressed on
  my laptop, so that WLAN is turned off, the other computer regains
  internet access after a little while.

  The failure occurs in 25 to 75 % of start attempts (my guess). If the
  network connection is successful, it will remain so, until the
  computer is restarted or set in standby for a while.

  When the failure occurs, a click is heard from the ADSL box; probably
  a relay. I haven't found anything in the log of the ADSL box that
  looks suspicious.

  When the failure occurs, there is rotating symbol in the notification
  area, declaring attempts to reconnect. The SSID of the Wlan AP is
  mentioned. I suppose this is from network-manager-applet.

  I don't know which log files in the computer to look for strange
  things.

  ADSL WLAN modem/router: Thomson SpeedTouch 780.

  Computer: HP Compaq nx7000, using intel ipw2100 for WLAN. CPU: Centrino.
  OS: Ubuntu 9.10
  network-manager: 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1

  
  I have mostly used Gnome, but have seen the same problem in KDE, I think.

  The bug could be in some other package, of course, but network-manager
  is my best guess.

Title:
  The application xpdf launches and then closes immediately

Bug description:
  I am a first-time user using a new, clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04
  LTS (installed on the day of its release) and have installed all of
  the recommended updates as they have become available since.  I
  attempted to use the apt-cache policy pkgname command without
  success.

  Even so, it's a great system!

  When I attempt to use xpdf to view or print a PDF document, the
  application flashes on the screen, attempting to open and then
  disappears.  A minute or so later I receive the error-message that I
  have taken screenshots of and will attempt to append to this report.

  The error-message on screen intrigues me because it tells me there is
  a bug and asks me if I wish to report it but gives me no CONTINUE
  option.  I am relatively new to Ubuntu and am not as up-to-speed as I
  would like to be but, after using Mepis for many years, I love its
  simplicity and user-friendliness, so am keen to do what I can to solve
  any problems I encounter.

  I have taken two screenshots of the entire error message and attempted
  to append them to this report but it appears that I can append only
  one of them.  I have attached the first page but can send the second
  subsequently, if you think it necessary.

  I use a Huawei E172 3G USB dongle for my mobile braoadband internet
  connection (on Vodafone).

  What happens:

  Approximately 40% of the times where I boot my machine and load my
  Desktop, Network Manager throws up a password box that says A
  password is required to connect to Vodafone Contract HUAWEI
  Technologies HUAWEI Mobile (see screenshot).  However, it does not
  accept my password.  There appears to be no pattern to this. This
  happens when no changes have been made to my system - no recently
  installed updates etc.  On one occasion it didn't happen for as long
  as five days, on another occasion it happened on four reboots in a row
  - it really does seem completely random.  The only option is to open
  network-manager-applet, delete my mobile broadband connection
  settings, then run the connection wizard again to re-apply them from
  the beginning

  Network Manager should not prompt me for a password for my 3G dongle
  when I load my Desktop. I should not have to delete my 3G mobile
  broadband settings in network-manager-applet, and then go through the
  wizard again to re-apply the settings.

  When the system is going to sleep Network Manager unloads the network 
interface even though the home directory is NFS loaded on that interface.
  Obviously there is still more work happening on that directory and so the 
system hangs on I/O in the case where NFS is mounted with the hard option.
  This prevents power saving and the system is unusable as Network Manager dies 
with the rest of Gnome all waiting for I/O
  If you log in on one of the TTYs shutting the system down cleanly fails on 
the kernel hung I/O and so the only way out is to press the reset button.

  There are lots of similar bugs but with differences.  I'm running
  Kubuntu 9.10 and have manually configured a static ip address using
  Network-Manager.  When I click the network manager icon it shows my
  static route available to activate.  Activating it works and as long
  as I leave the machine on it retains the static IP address.  On reboot
  network manager uses the default Auto eth0 dhcp connection despite
  having the Static connection set to auto connect.

  There does not seem to be a way to graphically turn off or disable the
  default auto eth0 dhcp connection permanently (until manually
  reactivated.)

  My expectation of network manager is to honor the Auto Connect tic
  box on whatever connection I've manually set to automatically connect
  to.

  It seems this issue has been around since Breezy.  My logic might be
  flawed but I have to ask. is it possible to add a line in the
  Manage Connections section of Network manager that would represent
  the default auto connect to dhcp on eth0 or wireless and give us a
  tic box to turn off that connection when enabling our own static
  configuration?

  description area would be further away from the edges of the window than
  the banner areas are. Would that matter? Maybe, maybe not.
  
  2. The price and warning banners are rather unattractive in themselves.
  In particular, they have no vertical borders, but dotted horizontal
  borders and a background color. These don't seem to go well together.
  
  3. The Install/Install…/Buy button is far away from the price --
  and the wider the window is, the further apart they are. Originally this
  was for semi-consistency with list views of multiple results (where we
  have a More Info button at the left end, and an Install button at
  the right end), but we want to reduce our use of list views anyway. One
  possibility for fixing this would be to put the button on the left side,
  with the price/installed text immediately to its right.
  
  These three problems would be best solved all at once by a graphic
  designer.

  In any case, I have a workstation with two Intel gigabit NICs on-
  board, and I'm using a Chelsio dual-port PCIe add-on board as my
  actual network interface.  To be precise:

  However, as the attached screenshot shows, the NM applet shows my
  active connection as being Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit Ethernet

  * What I expected to happen

  I open my netbook lid, Ubuntu resumes from standby, wireless connects
  immediately

  * What actually happened

  I open my netbook lid, Ubuntu resumes from standby, Network Manager
  applet spins for a while and is about to connect to saved network
  connection, then prompts me for WPA2 password but the password is
  already filled in, so I have to click Connect to connect. If my
  password is stored, why can't it just connect automatically? Why make
  me click Connect?

  * The minimal series of steps necessary to make it happen, where step
  1 is start the program

  Step 1. Make computer suspend to RAM (close lid)
  Step 2. Make computer resume from suspend (open lid)
  Step 3. Wait for wireless to reconnect

  I'm using the latest Lucid alpha will all recommended updates
  installed. This just started happening in the last few days. Broadcom
  4312 wireless card. Apport isn't able to connect directly to Launchpad
  right now, so I'm attaching the offline apport info.

  After upgrading to lucid wifi network starts to work badly. Two things
  seem to happen:

  1) Wifi stops transmiting but it appears to be connected

  2) Wifi disconnects (message is shown). The network-manager tries to
  reconnect and it finishes with an error or asking again the password.
  Entering the password doesn't succeed.

  Only workaround to reconnect is to deactivate Wifi interface and
  activate it again. However, it happens again after some minutes.

  I've did an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid beta 1 on an Asus Eee PC 1005 using 
a wifi connection.
  All packages were downloaded successfully but after starting package 
installation the wifi connection was dropped and the network-manager icon 
disappeared.
  The only resulting problem from this was not having flash working anymore as 
flashplugin-installer downloads flash code during package configuration.

  The work around was, after rebooting the machine, sudo dpkg-
  reconfigure flashplugin-installer.

  I understand a ton of libraries being updated so maybe some network-
  manager automatic restart procedure during upgrade and also an after
  reboot flashplugin-installer reconfiguration would be necessary.

As far as I know, yes. I tested on a Ubuntu 12.04 guest in VirtualBox on
Windows 7, without the Guest Additions installed. So, even though I only
verified this behavior in the Mouse panel, I cannot confirm that it is
exclusive to it.

  The dialogs in System Settings should not show the tab bar when
  there's only one tab available, even if the dialog is expandable and
  can show more than one tab. This is the case with the Mouse and
  Touchpad dialog in System Settings, for example, where if there is
  only a mouse available and no touchpad, there's only one tab shown,
  which honestly doesn't look nice, in my opinion. Thus, changes should
  be applied to not show the tab bar when there's only one tab and
  obviously present it when there are two tabs or more in the dialogs.

Bug description:

  Closing laptop lid on a Lenovo W500 running Kubuntu Lucid (10.04 LTS)
  causes a suspend/resume cycle.  As the resume often crashes, the
  machine must often be manually killed (hard power off) and restarted.
  When this is done, the network does not resume (KDENetworkManager
  reports the networking as unmanaged).  The only way I've found to
  restore it so far is to attempt another suspend/resume cycle (which
  may or may not require another hard reboot).

  Likely on startup the suspend/resume config/setting which disables
  networking during suspend/resume should be cleared out.

  Mostly just a nuisance, as we know not to intentionally suspend the
  machine, but it's definitely annoying.

  Hello Ubuntu team,

  I've been informed that the LTS version 10.04 is a bug in the graphics
  settings for ADSL. When I try to connect through this mode, the system
  displays an error and the connection is not established. Alternatively
  I am using pppeoconf via terminal to connect me to the internet.
  This option works perfectly in version 9.04, but from the 9:10 did not
  work anymore and this bug remains since then.

  How can I make the following connection mode work?

  Configure ADSL in graphical mode:

  1. Click the right mouse button on the network icon near the clock,
  go to Edit connections or System - Preferences - Network
  Configuration (Internet Config).

  2. Click on the DSL Add, now select the System Configuration, and
  if you want to auto-connect, also check Connect automatically.

  3. Username - Enter in the e-mail from your broadband provider.
  4. Service - Put the name of your carrier (velox, speed etc) or any other 
name.
  5. Password - The password for your ISP broadband.

  NetworkManager in Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 does not auto-connect to Wireless
  Networks marked Connect Automatically. Although it worked without
  problems on the same setup and hardware under Ubuntu 9.10, after
  upgrading to 10.04 this problem came up. In order to connect, I have
  to right click network-manager applet, and select Enable Wireless. If
  then enabled, it connects to the network. But it has to be done
  manually every time the computer starts.

  I did a suspend on my system.  For some reason, during resume, the
  system locked up and forced a reboot.  At this point, networking
  stopped working.  According to ps axf, both network-manager and nm-
  applet were running, but I was unable to use either to bring up any
  network device.

  Eventually I had to resort to manually bringing devices up via
  dhclient to get network connectivity back.

  This system is Lucid, upgraded from Karmic with all current upgrades
  as of 9 June 2010.

  It has an Intel 5300 Wireless card and an Intel GbE copper card
  installed.
