Steps to reproduce:

Installed GNU/Linux, specifically Ubuntu, and used their language-
selector which installed backends for spellchecking including hunspell
and myspell.

Actual results:

Firefox, accepting spellcheck backends from aspell, myspell, and
hunspell gave me numerous spell-check options, the default almost-always
being the wrong one.

Expected results:

Firefox should stick with one spell-check backend (I recommend aspell)
and perhaps recommend it for packagers as a dependency. This is the
launchpad bug:

I've been searching for the solution to this bug for a long time.

Firefox's spell-check, despite my locale being en-US, sets itself to
  en-GB, en-ZA or something en_US, which isn't even correct.

The problem, it seems, is that Firefox uses whatever spell-checking
backends you have installed - aspell, myspell, and hunspell. The
result is that Firefox chooses, en-GB as the default spell checker
more-often than not. So I uninstalled myspell, hunspell, and a package
called firefox-locale-en and now everything is correct - only one
spell checker is installed in Firefox.

The language selector, however, always prompts to reinstall these
  backends whenever it is loaded.

This Firefox add-on can assist, it gives you a list of dictionaries
  installed: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dictionary-
  switcher/

This should be removed for the user attempting to save a file. I happen
to know about OS9 drivers so it only took me 30 seconds to figure out
why the 'Save' button wasn't lit up, but it's not terribly obvious for
the typical user. It would be good to filter this (and any other
illegal characters) for the user.

It's probably still a good idea to not suggest names beginning with a

  Hi,

I have a fon hotspot (fon.com) at home. I can connect to it without
problem using the following command lines but NetworkManager always
fail. I attach daemon.log to this report.

The hotspot does not have WEP or WPA configured but uses a captive
  portal.

  This works:
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop
$ sudo iwconfig eth1 essid Neuf WiFi FON
  $ sudo dhclient eth1
  [...]
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8webpage to

1- Select Neuf WiFi FON in the list of networks in nm-applet

Open scripts folder confuses Nautilus if hidden fIles aren't shown

Status in Nautilus:

To reproduce this bug do the following.

  1. Start Nautilus
  2. Hide hidden files
  3. Navigate to a directory with files in it.
  4. RIght click on a file and select scripts-open scripts folder

You will notice that the left hand tree pane still has your directory
selected, but the right side shows the contents of ~/.gnome2/nautilus-
scripts. I would have expected it to navigate to the scripts
directory on the left hand pane. Note that if you have Nautilus set
to show hidden files then expected behavior occurs...the open scripts
folder menu item navigates you to the property directory.

This current behavior is confusing, but it gets worse (especially for
newbies). If you then click on your already highlighted folder, it
won't refresh the right side of nautilus, making it appear that the
contents of that select directory are gone! Scared the daylights out
  of me for a second...

Perhaps Nautilus should tell warn users about this the first time they
try it: In order to navigate to the scripts folder, it will be
necessary to show hidden files, do you want to continue?

I have confirmed this in Ubuntu Gutsy and Hardy.

  Keyboard stuck

Status in The Evolution Mail Calendaring Tool:

Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This bug occurs when using kwin as window manager (kubuntu flavor) and
is easily reproducible on either upgrades and new installs of Kubuntu
Precise. I haven't tried if it also occurs with Unity or Gnome.

There are other ways to trigger the bug but the easiest way is the following.
  1) In Evolution you need at least 2 e-mail accounts (mine are both of the
imapx type)
  2) Create an empty new e-mail
  3) Type some text in the body
  4) In the From: field select another account
  5) Try to continue typing in the body

At this point the keyboard doesn't respond. You can copy/paste text
  using the mouse.

  6) To work around: right-click in the body, select input method , switch to
None or Simple
  7) You can now type again.

Annoying bug and new to Precise / Evolution 3.2.3

This is a tracking bug for upstream
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122381. I assume Ubuntu
isn't too interested in adding this feature before upstream does.

  From upstream bug description:
It'd be nice to have an option to disable browsing the root filesystem in
the tree, so that only $HOME can be browsed. Browsing outside $HOME is useless
for me and probably confusing for non-experienced users who will get all sorts
of write errors when trying to write to /usr/lib or will be confused when
browsing /dev.

I've attached an initial patch to the upstream bug and also will
  attach it here for completeness.

  Browser: tree view rendering problem

Status in Nautilus:

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When I use Nautilus in Browser mode, and I explore the tree structure with
the mouse, I found an annoying thing, see screenshot.
Folder have a little arrow widget on their left, that you can click to
unfold them and reveal subfolders. That's fine.
The problem is that you get this arrow even for folders that do NOT have
sub-folders, so it's basically lying to you, and you can't use/rely on the
presence of the arrow widget to quickly/visually see whether a folder has or
  hans't a subfolder.
Then it gets even worse : when you click on the arrow of a folder that's
supposed to have subfolders, but hasn't any, it redraws the tree struture
any,
as if there were subfolders, and writes (Empty), eventhough the folder has
files in them, as per my example in the screenshot.

All this should be gotten rid of. When a folder has no subfolder in it,
Nautilus
shouldn't put an arrow widget next to it, to start with. Consequently, this
will
also avoid the Empty ghost folder, killing two birds with one stone...

CPU Resource Monitor ignores CPUs when 1 CPU is hotplugged

Status in The GNOME System Monitor:

Status in “gnome-system-monitor” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When Hotplugging a CPU Core (disableing it, see below), the CPU
Resource Monitor shows all CPUs with a ID equal or greater than the ID
of the hotplugged CPU with 0.0%, even though that is not the case.

  In my case:
Im running a AMD X4 System with 4 Cores.
  I disable core 2 via 'echo 0 /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/online'
(Hotplugging via the Method described here
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/debian-rhel-centos-redhat-suse-hotplug-cpu/)
At the same time Im running a Thread that puts core 3 at full load.
After disabling, the CPU Resource Monitor shows core 2 and core 3 at 0.0%
even though core 3 is still running at close to 100%.
After restarting the System Monitor it only shows cores 0 and 1. Core 3 is
not shown, even though it is still enabled and still shows up in /proc/cpuinfo

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

This is very annoying bug with the tree view in the side pane.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open up nautilus, and in the side pane, select Tree. In the following
instructions, on the left means the tree, and on the right means the icon
view on the right.
  2. Click on File System on the left, and on the right, double-click on var,
cache, apt, then archives (this is just an example).
  3. On the left, collapse (click the triangle next to) var.
  4. On the left, click on File System again.
  5. On the right, double-click on var, cache, apt, then archives. You will
notice that the tree on the left doesn't expand as you go into directories
anymore, unlike the first time.
  6. On the left, expand var.
  7. Great! Now try to click on directories on the left. They don't respond!

Sometimes at the end, I would have one directory on the left
permanently selected, and if I click on other directories, there would
be two directories selected at once!

If you try to unmount a busy device you will get an error message. However,

knowledge, i.e. knowing how to use the 'lsof' command.
Ideally a dialogue would show up showing what processes are preventing you
from unmounting it, including a Force button and PolicyKit integration.

However, this is a bit of work, so a temporary solution could be to
make the error message clearer, e.g. The device you're trying to
unmount is currently still in use by one or more applications. Please
  close those first.

The original description stated that the error message mentioned above
is only triggered when there has been data written.

Using either ubuntu studio 10.04 or 12.04(alpha dec19) if brasero is
started by a right click on a toc file (or maybe a cue file) it opens
a dialogue to burn a cd from. I can cancel or burn a cd, but in either
case ps x still shows brasero running after the dialogue has gone when
the application has completed it's task successfully. trying to burn a
cd from a second toc file or even open brasero from the main menu then
fails until brasero has been killed (kill pid). This is not a problem
when opening an audio file (wav, ogg etc.) as the main brasero window
is opened. I think that because the burn dialogue normally would not
exit brasero it doesn't exit here either, however, the main window is
  not shown to exit from.

This is important to UbuntuStudio because the main DAW (Ardour) puts
out toc files as a finished product and brasero is needed (since the
loss of gcdmaster) to actually print the file to CD. So this should be
listed as a ubuntu studio bug as well.

This folder can than be pasted anywhere where desired. However, this
same copy operation is NOT possible through the assigned shortcut
Ctrl-C. When issueing this command, nothing happens.

Within the top 'Edit' menu, the copy command is grayed out, meaning
not available, although this functionallity actually works. May be the
graying out is the reason while the shorcut Ctrl-C is not working.
Probably, Ctrl-C is connected to the (disabled) menu item.

It appears that when disabling, the rfkill soft block is set on the

in fact it is only soft-disabled), causing the menu item to be
  disabled.

If one manually removes the soft block using `rfkill unblock ID`,

The applet should instead show enable the menu option when the device
is only soft-blocked, and remove the soft block when the enable option
  is selected.

  1. Start with a working (cleartext or DES-3) private key/cert for a network.
Set up a connection and verify that everything works.
  2. Re-encrypt the key with AES-256 with this command: openssl rsa -in
working-key.pem -out aes-key.pem -aes256 (the output should have a line
starting with DEK-Info: AES-256-CBC,)
  3. Delete the settings for the test network and attempt to reconnect using
the new key. Even with the correct passphrase, the Connect button will
remain disabled; debugging will determine that nm-util is failing to validate
the private key.

  Description: Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
  Release: 10.10

  2) apt-cache policy network-manager
  network-manager:
    Installed: 0.8.1+git.20100810t184654.ab580f4-0ubuntu2
    Candidate: 0.8.1+git.20100810t184654.ab580f4-0ubuntu2

  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  3) What is expected to happen is Network Manager populates networks
within range immediately when ones wireless hardswitch is turned on,
whether the ethernet cord is plugged in or not.

  4) What happened instead is when the wireless hardswitch is off, ethernet
plugged in, one removes the ethernet cord, then within seconds turn the
wireless hardswitch on so the WiFi indicator light is on, no networks are in
range, even after waiting a few minutes.
Please see screenshot.png for scenario where the ethernet cord is plugged in,
wifi switch on and no wifi networks populate Network Manager.

WORKAROUND: In Ubuntu 10.10 reboot the pc with the ethernet cord
  unplugged, wireless hardswitch turned on.

WORKAROUND: In Ubuntu 11.04, with wireless hardswitch turned off,
ethernet cable plugged in, perform a clean boot. Disconnect ethernet
cord then turn on wireless hardswitch and notice no wireless networks
in the area. Perform the following via the Terminal:

  ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo stop network-manager
  network-manager stop/waiting
  ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo start network-manager
  network-manager start/running, process 5172
  ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ rfkill list
  0: phy0: Wireless LAN
  Soft blocked: no
  Hard blocked: no

Notice one may see wireless networks in range and successfully
  connected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 239999] Re: nm should support easy bonding

2012-07-25 Thread Bug Watch Updater
** Changed in: network-manager
   Importance: Critical = Wishlist

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
  nm should support easy bonding

Status in NetworkManager:
  Confirmed
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  -- The feature:
Network Manager should assist the user as much as reasonably possible in
setting up a bond0 interface.

  -- Motivating scenario:
I'm watching a movie, accessed via sshfs from my desktop box over the wired
interface. I get hungry, so I decide to move my laptop to my kitchen and
continue watching the movie while cooking. The sshfs connection should
seamlessly stay alive, such that I don't have to restart mplayer.

  -- A sketch of a solution:
Look at the IP address and netmask of available interfaces. If two
interfaces lie within the same network, ask the user whether to try enabling
bonding. If yes, modprobe bonding mode=1, set up bond0, enslave eth0 and eth1
(say) with the fastest being the primary. Let the user say always bond,
always bond for $ESSID, never bond, never bond for $ESSID after testing
whether it works.

-- Taking this one step further:
Support other values of mode= for the bonds. Don't do this only for
wired+wifi, but any number of wired and wifi interfaces. Try to diagnose and
repair (or suggest repairs for) any problems that occur while trying to bond.

Bug description:
I have three mounted smb-shares, which are not writable for my current
user (don't ask me why :)

They are all existent in /media, so nautilus recognizes them as disks
in the tree. Now, when I display the tree the icons of the disks are
of the standard disk type. However, when I click on them it turns to
a yellow lock. I think it is very strange to have a yellow lock on the
disk icon and having to be reminded all the time that the disk is
  read-only.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Mount a smb disk in /media as read-only
  2. Open nautilus and click on the disk
  3. Watch your screen

  What should happen:
  1. Mount a smb disk in /media as read-only
  2. Open nautilus and click on the disk
  3. See the nice disk icon as existent in Breezy

For those user who are not command line literate and new to Ubuntu a
check box within the drive properties window to enable auto mounting
of removable and new secondary hard drives would be of great benefit.
Auto mounting a secondary harddrive seems to be a problem that many
people are having and this would simplify this issue.

Since Oneiric I need to clear the password each time I want to connect
to the VPN so I can enter the correct one. Although there is nowhere a
checkbox to be seen that sets save password (like in the previous

  do it a bug)?

Is there a setting I missed? It seems something in the network

  See example here:

  http://pastebin.com/FmgkFBcS

Some users are attempting to connection to these networks and are
finding they have issues as they can't manually map between the ini
file and the network manager advanced settings. Although I would say
that they shouldn't have to do it manually and importing of the file
  should work automatically.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

When the system is going to sleep Network Manager unloads the network
interface even though the home directory is NFS loaded on that interface.
Obviously there is still more work happening on that directory and so the
system hangs on I/O in the case where NFS is mounted with the hard option.
This prevents power saving and the system is unusable as Network Manager dies
with the rest of Gnome all waiting for I/O
If you log in on one of the TTYs shutting the system down cleanly fails on
the kernel hung I/O and so the only way out is to press the reset button.

here is the syslog output showing network manager stopping the nic just
before the kernel says ouch I have no file system to talk to:

I am using network manager in Dapper to automatically switch between
wired and wireless interfaces. Before I started using network
manager, I was using the wireless-txpower directive in the interfaces
file to ratchet down the transmit power on my wireless interface,
which yields a significant improvement in battery life. I cannot find
a means of configuring this with network-manager. I can still set

  Hello!,
Today I come to talk about a issue that I have been experiencing since I

several places you most of the times you end with a lot of APs, and some of

Those keywords are using by gnome-shell,unity for searches, having some like

Currently it appears that Network Manager does not have the ability to
import Microsoft's cms files. These are ini files with options on how
to set up a vpn client for a configured network. see details here:

  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc939869.aspx

  See example here:

  http://pastebin.com/FmgkFBcS

Some users are attempting to connection to these networks and are
finding they have issues as they can't manually map between the ini
file and the network manager advanced settings. Although I would say
that they shouldn't have to do it manually and importing of the file
  should work automatically.

Can you start Thunderbird in -safe-mode

If the issue is still present would it be possible for you to look into

there's apparently no way to reduce the space between icons
(especially useful when you zoom your folder). I have music folder,
and when you zoom, the left-right gat between two icons is too big,
I'd like to find a way to reduce it si i can view more icons in the
  window.

  Thanks for helping me !

I'm using last version of nautilus package, with lucid lynx...

Bug description:
Network Manager doesn't seem to be able to set up modem ppp / dial up
connection altough the old network configurator of GNOME could.

  WORKAROUND (for now):

use pppd; which allows configuring a serial modem with the sudo
pppconfig command, which will ask all the necessary questions.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 666446] Re: NetworkManager VPN should offer an option to use *only* VPN nameservers

NetworkManager VPN should offer an option to use *only* VPN
  nameservers

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

If I configure a VPN in NetworkManger, the DNS servers I get via DHCP
over that VPN connection are *prepended* to /etc/resolv.conf. This is
good in that they get used first, but it's not quite enough.

  Here's the scenario:

My two office DNS servers support DNSSEC validation. My ISP at home
  does not.

When I connect to the VPN and try to resolve a name which fails DNSSEC
validation (e.g. badsign-a.test.dnssec-tools.org), my office DNS
servers return SERVFAIL (as per DNSSEC validation behavior). This
causes libc to fail over to my ISP's DNS server. The result is that
the domain name resolves, when it should fail.

If this were a real attack instead of a test scenario, it'd have
  security implications.

If I could make the VPN *replace* my DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf,
  everything would work as expected.
