[native-lang] [Fwd: Nominations are Now Open for the Jolt Product Excellence Awards]

2006-11-28 Thread Jacqueline McNally

Hello

If you or you know someone that has created a book, website, or product
that fits the Jolt categories
(http://www.joltawards.com/categories.html), then consider nominating
yourself/them for a Jolt award.

There are lots of categories for tracking, development tools, and
testtools. I was thinking that some of the winners of the Summer of Code
or Developer Article contest may be eligible.

If you missed out on the Summer of Code or OOo Developer Article
Context, consider entering the Jolt awards :) Closing date 15 Dec 2006.

Jacqueline

2006-02-22 Thread Jacqueline McNally

... Lyon, France.

The voting for the location of OOoCon 2006 finished on Sunday as
planned. A total of 425 people voted and the final results were:

Lyon, France 320
Vienna, Austria 105

The location of OOoCon 2006 will be Lyon, France.

188 people indicated that they would attend, 185 are not sure at the
time of voting, and 52 responded that they would not attend.

Thanks to all that participated in voting for the location of OOoCon 2006.

On behalf of the OpenOffice.org Conference Team I would like to thank
again both Sophie and Angelika, and their teams for submitting the
proposals on which we were able to vote. We hope too that Vienna will
resubmit their proposal for 2007. I would also like to thank the
OpenOffice.org Conference Team for organising the bid for location,
collating the submissions, and especially Cristian for creating and
maintaing the voting mechanism.

Re: [native-lang] OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 Release Candidate Is Here

2005-07-15 Thread Jacqueline McNally
Thank you for your responses Andre. I agree with all that you have said
this and at other times on the matter.

This is the only point that I would like to discuss further.

We have always announced the release candidates widely assuming that
the QA team are in the thick of it and the most aware.

No, that has been started with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3. Before that time we used
to announce RC within the project but not to the enduser.

Prior to 1.1.2 our community was much smaller. I would say too, that our
community now consists of many more endusers, whereas our early endusers
tended to be people and organisations that did not subscribe to our
lists or participate in their way previously.

So now our endusers are perhaps those that are more aware being part
of the community and there are those that do not form part of our
community and perhaps considered the public or endusers-at-large.

I hesitated about sending the announcement to announce@ for this very
reason. But saw that the 1.1.4rc
(http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=announcemsgNo=225)
announcement was sent to this list, so sent the 1.1.5rc one.

Perhaps we can re-visit the process on the QA project list. I really
would like to invite more people to join the QA project as I find that
when a release is made this is when we have the discussions of I
didn't know it was going to work that way when it has been
progressing that way for months :(

http://qa.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=devby=threadfrom=489067

Has been stopped (imo), as:
- discussion abut re-establishing the release committee slowed down
- current (formal) QA-Leads don't care

Yes you are right, you introduced a very good summary as to how you saw
the release process from a QA pov. I too documented the marketing or
publicity process wrt not just releases but all pr. This too was
commented on and then left.

Other than my attempt to stick to what was documented and encouraging
discussion as you have done, I don't know what to suggest.

I have been mostly out of list discussions this last three months, and
I'm sorry if I have missed an important discussion or community decision
during this time.

Agreed, but not all users experienced problems and those that did
reported them.

Everybody else knows about the RC anyway - be it through monitoring the
mirrors, reading the releases or qa-list, some news-site mentioning it.

So what you are saying is that we should leave it to the people who know
which lists and projects to monitor, and not to announce it within our
community/project.

We should not officially announce a RC that is broken.

Agreed. And in this instance we thought that the new installation sets
fixed the problem :(

[native-lang] OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 Release Candidate Is Here

2005-07-14 Thread Jacqueline McNally

All,

OpenOffice.org 1.1.5rc is ready for you to download now. It's a
release candidate, meaning that it has bugs, and we would like for
you to work with us in finding them and reporting them. It's easy
and even fun. :-)

What's important about 1.1.5rc? It includes numerous bug fixes but
just as important includes a filter for OpenDocument files, which is
the type that OpenOffice.org 2.0 and the 1.9.x releases create. To
download and file bug reports, follow the links below:

* OpenOffice.org 1.1.5rc:
http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.5rc/index.html
* QA Project: http://qa.openoffice.org/

This release candidate arrives simultaneously in 11 languages. More
languages will be available as the community creates them. Check
with your Native Language Project for more information. It is also
available for Linux, Solaris, and Windows.

I think we need to be a little more precise with our wording.
I just take wikipedia as reference, as it tells, what most people think,
what a RC is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Release_candidate#Release_candidate
The term release candidate can refer to a final product, ready to release
unless fatal bugs emerge.
... for versions that are substantially complete, but still under test, ...

for final testing of versions that are believed to be bug-free, and may go
into production at any time.

This definition works well if there is a finite group working on the
release cycle. But here, and with other OSS, everyone has the
opportunity to be involved in the progression of the software through
its release cycle.

So, at this time, we *know* that our RC is not ready to be released. A
showstopper has been raised yesterday at the releases list. It has already
been marked as fixed, so I'd expect to see a new RC within the next few
days.

Yes, we will, so we will have another one. But don't you think it is
better that many more people are able and willing to download and test
the releases that are not yet production ?

Measured and experienced testers are vital, but end-users that are
willing to give it a go are also invaluable as they often do things in a
way that is difficult to include in regression and smoke tests.

So .. the problem with the announcement is, that we cannot be shure who ist
testing what RC ...

The files have dates and it is the first rc.

The thing, we have missed is to announce the availabilty of the RC at the QA
project and ask experienced people to do the tests. We do have a test
process and protocols, but we do not use it :-(

We have always announced the release candidates widely assuming that the
QA team are in the thick of it and the most aware.

[native-lang] Free/Open Source Software: Localization

2005-06-14 Thread Jacqueline McNally

UNDP-APDIP's International Open Source Network has produced a primer on
Free/Open Source Software Localization.

Free/Open Source Software: Localization
Anousak Souphavanh and Theppitak Karoonboonyanan

FOSS Localization Primer (pdf format - 1.3MB)
http://www.iosn.net/l10n/foss-localization-primer/foss-localization-primer.pdf
(may need to copy and paste long URL)

From the Introduction:
This primer provides a broad perspective on the localization of
Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) for the benefit of policy- and
decision-makers in developing countries. It highlights the benefits and
strategies of FOSS localization, along with case studies from various
countries that are on the road to software freedom.

The primer begins with an introduction to localization and the benefits
of choosing FOSS over proprietary software. The next section provides a
survey of initiatives and efforts in localization of FOSS within the
Asia-Pacific region, including best practices and lessons learned
specifically in countries such as Viet Nam, Thailand, Cambodia, India
and Malaysia. The primer also provides three case studies of
localization efforts in Thailand, Lao PDR and Cambodia, as well as
recommendations on technical issues, resource allocation, skills and
tools, implementation, costs and language considerations.

To help localizers get started, two annexes regarding key concepts and
the technical aspects of localization are provided. These are intended
for project managers and implementers who are planning software
localization projects.

I'm sure you will recognise some OOo contributors in the primer :)

LINUXCHIX AFRICA LAUNCHES AN ORGANIZATION THAT WILL POSITION AFRICAN
WOMEN WITHIN THE FREE AND OPEN SOURCE (FOSS) MOVEMENT.
Linuxchix Africa was formed in 2004 by African women and for African
women. It is a chapter in Africa affiliated to Linuxchix worldwide. The
aim of the African chapter is to help toward building the critical mass
of Linux skills among African women, and to advocate for the use of Free
and Open Source Software for the many community development challenges
being faced by Africans, especially African women.
The challenges of Africa are well documented, with HIV/AIDS representing
the most significant development challenge of our times. Community
development can no longer be viewed in isolation but require
multi-tiered, cross-sectoral, and well-coordinated approaches that are
aligned to Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Without ICT,
communities get left behind and are unable to take advantage of the
social and economic benefits that come with ICT. This integration of ICT
into social development programmes is often referred to as eDevelopment,
eHealth and eLearning and represent models of ICT intervention in
development, health and education respectively.
With the advent of Free and Open Source Software, it has now become
possible to make software available to people who would otherwise not
afford it. With FOSS, countries will no longer have to prioritise
between poverty and the digital divide. Also since women are the ones
mostly affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS, it is relevant that they be
properly tooled and positioned to make that difference in their lives.
Furthermore, ICT is still male dominated, moreso the Open Source
technical environment, so Linuxchix Africa will play a role as a
catalyst that will demystify FOSS to the people who stand to benefit
the most from it.
