Transparency on Mac OS

Hi,

on the user list someone wanted to report a crash when activating 
transparency on a graphics object in calc.


AFAIK Quartz (based upon PDF) doesn't support transparency.
Maybe the transparency checkbox needs to be disabled on Mac OS.
Within /tools/options we have a printer config item to reduce/disable 
transparency in VCL/GSL.


anyone ? Maybe I'm wrong... I'm not using Mac OS

Hi,

increasing row-, column- or table count in Calc must be calculated well 
to fit into a 32 bit application. If memory consumption gets to the 
maximum (4 GB) then the application will crash. AFAIK AOO hasn't yet 
been ported to 64 bit on it's main platform (wntmsci6.pro). Be shure 
that document exchange will work with older versions of this application 
and export filters and their applications will support this as well.

This is not a problem, I can use a Thinkpad T40 (Pentium M1,5 Ghz, 512MB RAM, 
120 GB Western Digital HDD).

But the PC I use daily (Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo P7935) also has only 2 GB of 
RAM, but an SSD.

checked the md5sum and it was correct.


I'm not sure that all users will understand what administrative 
installation means. I did. Probably a better documentation about how to

the checksum file. The application is working as expected.

Using tesseract-ocr from within AOO ?

Hi there,

I've just played with the OpenSource OCR engine 
https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/ and it seems to do it's job 
very well to do OCR on scanned bitmaps.
As it comes with Apache License 2.0 and as it's available as C++ source 
code why not integrating it's functionality into AOO or building an 
extension that either connect it's API to AOO or which connect's it 
using it's command line arguments ?


From my perspective both projects would benefit...

it would be great to have that functionality in Calc but did you 
consider to support this within the Excel import filter as it is an 
Excel functionality ?


Alternatively a user can use this:
When using the magic type range names (adding a column header you can 
parse over the whole column that has this header) you can reference the 
whole input area within calc...


Example: Add eg. the sting "banana" as a column header somewhere within 
a sheet and add some numerical data downside of it then at a place 
somewhere else within the sheet you can use it like =sum(banana)


Differently to Excel you can add data whereelse you want within that 
range (at the beginning, within that range (adding rows within that 
area) and adding columns at the end of that range)

his business in Lüneburg (near Hamburg). Development of StarOffice based 
on StarView started in 1994. When looking at StarWriter then development 
started earlier and later StarOffice was a complete rewrite of the ideas

Very possible problem

Hi,

within the last two or three weeks I experienced an issue within the 
Writer component:


When selecting a table within Writer that has been copied from an HTML 
source and the document has been stored in ODF format before (reloasded 
document) then the application exits with an error message.


Unfortunately I cannot provide an example document because the one I 
have is somehow confidential.


Maybe this is something Oliver-Rainer could take a look at...please...

in i18npool.uno.dll. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any symbols to 
give more details.

Building with MSVC++ 10.0 Express Compiler

regarding the current discussion about building with Java 7 and Mozilla 
I thought it to be useful to ask if someone could enhance the configure 
scripts to handle wntmsci13.pro builds (using MSVC 2010 Express compiler 
infrastructure)? And as long as the current Express compilers don't ship 
with msm files it might be useful to disable the check for these files 
and to disable the pack process if configured. Maybe somebody want's to 
use a different pack process eg. by using a self extracting archive instead.

But whatever the reason, I think it demonstrates that vote counts from
the earlier years are extremely difficult to compare fairly with
recent vote counts.  And the fact that we don't even have a formal RFE
for iOS or Android, even though we get daily requests for this via
other means is odd too.  It suggests that *how* users give feedback
has changed.  Maybe in 2002 it was via Bugzilla.  But today we get
more feedback from Facebook and Twitter than we do Bugzilla.  IMHO we
need to adapt to how users actually express preferences today rather
than assume that they are in tune with a Bugzilla based feedback
mechanism from 2002.



AOO is an open source project and features don't get implemented by 
votes. If someone want's an iOS or Android port then someone has to do 
it. Perhaps a professional committer like IBM may want to help here. I 
don't know if there's a demand within IBM to fund such a work...

maybe it has other reasons like missing access to the former OOo login 
on the Apache infrastructure eg. one thing that went wrong with my OOo 
account.



There could be several reasons for this:

1) Older issues are better issues because they were entered by smarter
people.  But then the linear trend is then odd.  Did people become
less smart in such a regular way over the years?

2) Older issues have been around longer so they have had a longer
opportunity to be voted on.  This very naturally would explain a
linear trend.

3) Users have become less interested in or aware of voting.  But
again, it hard to explain the gradual linear trend.  Why for example,
would users in 2010 entering an issue not even vote for their own
issue 90% of the time, but in 2002 nearly half of those issues
received votes?

In any case, this is one reason why I take the old vote counts cum
grano salis.  For whatever reason the votes are biased toward older
issues.

1. The installer has buttons that are clearly labeled with text that
can be clearly accessed using keyboard navigation. this is a plus
because a blind computer user is able to successfully install the
program on his or her computer without any sighted help.
2. The buttons in the installer all have corresponding access keys,
like alt+n for next and alt+f for finish. This is very helpful for
screen reader users and for those who use assistive technologies
because these access keys allow such users to complete functions
quickly.
3. Upon opening the program, however, i notice that a blind computer
user is not able to access any of its functions using keyboard
navigation. the blind user cannot select the type of template heor she
wishes to use, like a spreadssheet or text document. Drop down menus
cannot be accessed using any form of keyboard navigation, like using
the alt key to access the menus like in the windows operating system.


Use funktion key F6 to toggle between the menu, menu bar and tool bars



as soon as you contact me, I can construct a detailed report that
contains each problem I see as well as provide detailed fixes to these
problems. It is my hope that Open Office becomes completely
accessible, so people with disabilities can utilize this software and
enjoy its benefits.

It would also be interesting to know the last time the extension was
updated; besides that expecting unmaintained extensions to work on a new
major release might not be plausible, the extension is likely not be
adapted to any change if it is unmaintained, no matter how popular it is
(example: the most popular, Oracle PDF Import Extension, Downloads:
Week: 12,706, unmaintained since Dec. 2010, seems to be broken
- according to the first three comments).


within the last days I've installed the Windows variant of the PDF 
Import Extension several times on different systems (Win7, Win8) and all 
of those installations worked like a charm.

Hi,

maybe you feel I'm nitpicking but I'm missing some details about 
available test methods


- Unit test automation
- API test automation
- UI test automation

From my understanding AOO test automation currently includes all of 
them. I think a unit test should be part of the build verification test 
because it's part of the AOO source code that needs to be checked.




   I draft an overall test plan[1] in wiki. Please review and feedback with
your suggestion. Any comments are welcome.

Hi,

this server based StarOffice version was called StarPortal 
(StarDivision). Later it was called Sun ONE Webtop (Sun Microsystems). 
The client protocol was VCL remote, a protocol that was removed before 
Sun opensourced the StarOffice code base to OpenOffice.org. With VCL 
remote the VCL rendered user interface was triggered via API allowing a 
full color and full resolution visualization of the UI by needing just 
an ISDN phone connection (64 kbit/s). There were native C++ VCL 
clients for almost every client platform (Win, Mac, Linux, Solaris, 
etc.) and there was a Java based VCL client to be used via browser 
interface or used within a Sun Java station.
It had a central configuration management solution based on LDAP (XML 
config items were stored within an LDAP structure). Parts of the 
configuration logic is still part of AOO, eg. locking of config items. 
There were parts that allowed rendering into HTML, DHTML, WML and there 
was a fax interface. Sun ONE Webtop allowed the usage of hardware 
loadbalancers. A new client usually logged-in into a virtual user 
directory or it was able to log-in into a system based user directory 
using single sign-on so eg. the user was able to use his WAP phone to 
select a document within his home directory to send it to a fax number.

A user process shared the memory usage with other client processes.

Oracle Cloud Office cannot be compared with developments like StarPortal 
or Sun ONE Webtop that needed office processes to run on client side. 
Oracle Cloud Office used the ODF file format to render it by using 
JavaScript. OTOH bulk document conversions were done by an office 
process on server side. Oracle Cloud Office scaled far better.

I for one don´t ´need´ an AJAX / HTML5 version of AOO... GDocs is fine...

I personally think browser based apps are a pig, and doing apps in
JScript is insane. I had Chrome open the other day just with GMail and
it was using over 150 MB of RAM

A thin client virtualized version on the other hand would use the PC´s
CPU and horsepower and deliver great speed to even to lowest powered
devices.



I'd prefer to have a web server based application which I could setup at 
home and what I could configure it to be used from everywhere I have IP 
access (private cloud) to. The data transmission should run in a secure 
way (at least via https) and it should include a login mechanism to 
access it. Basing the application development on ODF file format 
features for this webapp would ease it's deployment because files 
created with this webapp would automatically be compatible to AOO. And a 
webapp can be configured to run on whatever client you want it to run 
on. Wether it uses JS or some other technology is not that important as 
well as it's not that important to have a document that is rendered 100% 
like within AOO. More important is the ability to modify documents on 
the go eg. from a mobile.

Yes, and you can do that with an html5/ajax version hosted somewhere
-you´d need a web server-, or also by logging into your AOO copy at
home with a VNC client for Android/iPad...



but I don't want to render the application. It's better to work on the 
document by using an API of it's file format (like ODFDOM) instead.

Yes, this is the answer to the preservation hazard: just break links;
and there are several macros and perhaps extensions around that just add
a Break all links button to embed all images instead of linking to them.

That said, I think it would be quite reasonable (if there are no UX
problems or major development problems) to do the opposite in OpenOffice
4.0 and break links by default, since this happens to be the standard
expectation many users have.

In this case you can start your cell entry using a single quote 
character. A trailing single quote character will handle the cell 
content as a string not as a number.




3. lower case data is changed to identical higher case data (eg: data 
to DATA(when DATA is a separate piece of

data that i typed than the lower case))

I have to confess this can be odd but it really is a feature of Calc to 
autocorrect the way you once wrote a string within another input cell 
within a column. You can turn this behavior off within the tools menu.


/tools/cell content/auto input (or something like that - I use a 
German localization)




4. If I type Scone then i can not write s, sc, sco, or scon in the same 
field without my data being altered to the full word scone.
