Community in Mexico City
Dear all, I'll travel to Mexico from Taiwan on 7/1-10, and stay in Mexico City from 7/5-10. My main purpose is to attend to WikiWomen Camp 2017 in Mexico City, but I would also like to meet the local OpenOffice/ASF/FOSS community in Mexico City if possible. I'm not sure on this since I do not know whether my submit talks are accepted. I would like to ask when the Open Document Editors devroom will announce the result of CFP? Re: Sourceforge
(I did not see any reason this discussion should go private, so I moved it to public.) As far as I read, the GIMP team had never opt-in distributing adwares/malwares. They did agree to share SF.net's ad profit, but not bundling adwares/malwares with their installers. And SF.net did hijacked GIMP for Windows without authors' consent. Goodbye, SourceForge. https://helb.github.io/goodbye-sourceforge/ Anatomy of SourceForge/GIMP controversy (from GIMP team) http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/anatomy-of-sourceforge-gimp-controversy What happened to Sourceforge? (from VLC developer) https://blog.l0cal.com/2015/06/02/what-happened-to-sourceforge/ I looked into which projects SF.net hijacked, and surprisingly found Apache HTTPD, Apache Derby, Apache Directory Studio, Firefox, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Nmap, The R-project. Apache HTTPD, Apache Derby, Apache Directory Studio, Nmap, R http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor3/profile/ GIMP, VLC http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor1/profile/ Firefox, MySQL, PostgreSQL http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor/profile/ So who's next? Apache OpenOffice? When will there be a new malware/adware-enabled Apache OpenOfffice installer? I suppose we should move from SF.net to a trustworthy mirror solution. So what happens to a document that was signed with AOO 4.0.1? Can you read it in AOO 4.1? Can you verify the signature? Same for a signed macro? I understand Juergen's point on the removal of Mozilla library. But I'm not sure if we can take this lightly. Documents that were digitally signed can still be opened and edited, but their signatures cannot be verified, and they cannot be signed again once they are modified. Document macros that were digitally signed can still work if their signers were confirmed before. But these macros will not work for the first time on newer installations unless their users change their security method. Newer document macros cannot be signed anymore, and the users have to change their security method. I do not know if this is serious or not. Sorry I found this problem too late. I think it is important to know whether AOO 4.1 fails safe with signed macros if it is unable to verify the signature. If a user has set security to allow only execution of signed macros and AOO 4.1 permits them to be executed without being able to verify the signature, then we have a much more serious problem. I'm not saying that this problem exists, but we should check carefully to make sure it is not a problem. -Rob Does anybody know more about document signing and how it is intended to work? Traditional Chinese not found yet. Should I wait for a while? On 2014/04/02 21:16, Jürgen Schmidt said: Hi, FOLLOW UP discussion please on the dev list!!! Last week I proposed a final schedule for our upcoming AOO 4.1 release. We are a little bit behind because the fact that we had to fix some further critical issues. Nevertheless I would like to propose a first RC based on revision 1583666 from the AOO410 branch. We spend a lot of time in preparing the RC in time and the upload is ongoing. The MacOS and Windows versions are already available and the Linux upload is still ongoing. But keep in mind the binaries are for convenience and the release relevant bits are the source release. The RC builds can be found as always under https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds An overview of the fixes issues, enhancements and tasks going into this release can be found under http://people.apache.org/~jsc/milestones/4.1.0-rc/AOO4.1.0_RC_fixes.html. I invite all volunteers to help with the verification of the fixed issues. Especially the issues related to translation updates/fixes should be verified by native speakers. A related RAT scan can be found under http://people.apache.org/~jsc/milestones/4.1.0-rc/AOO4.1.0_RAT_Scan.html I have also prepared patches (msp) for Windows and for the languages we have released with AOO 4.0.1. The patches are intended for private use only and of course for testing but not for the release. It's the first time that we prepared a complete set of patches and we have to test the functionality a little bit more. The related full install sets are prepared for patches in the future and can release patches in the future as well if they work as expected. By the way I have upgraded AOO 4.0.1 (en-US) on my Windows laptop with the msp to AOO 4.1 ;-) I plan to start a vote for this RC later today and let it run until Sunday night, means enough time to test and evaluate the bits careful. Linux binaries will be available tomorrow latest. We have not fixed and integrated all requested showstoppers because they were not all showstoppers from my perspective and we should take into account that we have limited resources in the project able to fix issues. We focused on issues that are obviously showstoppers and on those who are relevant for most of our users. When installing Perl DBD::mysql library, we need a database to test if DBD::mysql is working. There should always a database named test (although some DB admins prefer to remove it), but you do not need to bother with its contents. 2) Friday morning (8-11 UTC) I will convert tables. This happens online, and only means slow system while I do it. That is 16-19 UTC+8. Normally I would be stuck in the traffic going home at this time on Fridays, but I could stay in the office if necessary. see above. 3) Friday afternoon (15 UTC, depending on pctony), we can take the forums down for approx 2hours to move the databases. That would be perfect for me. it would for me too, but pctony has to go to hospital with his kid, so we try to see if we can do it thursday (24/10). I would really apriciate your help with the first 2 forums, to make a more thorough test. And then hope that ricardo could do a smoke test on the others. This is of course a service that infra provides so if you want it postponed, we will have to find a way. And also, please add the date (10/24, 10/25). It's confusing to guess if Friday is 10/25 or 11/1. (And normally I would bet on 11/1 as 10/25 is very close.) Sorry about that, good idea. rgds jan I. In order to finalize the database changes Thursday and move friday, we need someone with access to all forums to help with the test. Could this be an acceptable plan ? The time is needed, but if preferred I can do it friday or saturday evening instead (depending on pctony). rgds jan I. This is now impacting other services and needs to be resolved ASAP, please. FWIW the total downtime was 11 minutes. Which is pretty fast considering all the changes that had to be incorporated. Regards, Andrea. -- Cheers, Tony -- Tony Stevenson t...@pc-tony.com

It seems that in the end interruption of service was minimal. I've removed the note from the home page. Of course, for the next maintenance operations, including the forum, please give us some more time to inform users. Of course we will, in fact we gave you the best we could today given the circumstances we found ourselved in. The forum move will need to have as many tables as possible converted from ISAM to inno. This is critical, as we only run MySQL 5.5 and will not be install 5.6 anytime soon, as a result all fields that require full text search enabling need to keep that table in ISAM. JanIV did this already for other DBs and he should be consulted on how to do this. It is likely this will be a many hour operation and is a pre-requisite. I dont wan't to force a date on the community to have this done by, but we need to action this ASAP. To prevent further issues to other VMs on the same host as forums. Can I please ask that if we do not hear any offers of support to help us convert these tables by Weds this week that Infra will set a date (with n days notice) and do the work ourselves. Imacat (admin) has responded to my question if help is wanted, answer was that it would be be fine if infra does it (like me) and offered to help. If we think along these lines, my plan would be the following: You can ignore me if my help is not needed. But, still, 1) Thursday evening (16-22 UTC), I wil combine the single forum databases into the EN database. This will mean short breaks on the single forum, about 10min each (to copy the tables). If time permits, I will convert the FULLTEXT back to MyIsam. That's 0-6 UTC+8 here. I have works on Friday. I can stay up to at most 19 UTC (3 UTC+8), but not after that. And what do you mean by combining short forum databases into the EN databases? So we will only have EN database in the future? 2) Friday morning (8-11 UTC) I will convert tables. Anyway, let's update the tally to 24 +1 votes (14 binding) and 1 -1 vote (imacat, binding) and move on. As Juergen already wrote, we remain committed to make the traditional Chinese version available at the earliest occasion, it is already at 100% but it simply came too late to build/include it. Do we have an agreement that we need 100% for a release? http://markmail.org/message/pxgvjuw2j3ukqsom Concerns should have been risen at that time, it was discussed on the mailing list, and properly tagged (if it does not happen on the mailing list...). I'm asking because I really don't know it and in former OOo times we have done releases for languages with at least 80% translated UI [1]. So, maybe a change that I haven't seen in the last weeks. For this particular case, the translation of the main 4.0.0 feature is incomplete https://translate.apache.org/zh_TW/aoo40/svx/source/sidebar/ How serious would it be to release this translation in such a state? The same applies to other languages released in 3.4.* but not in this 4.0.0 RC. Hmm... I see the problem with side bar translation. And I'm very sorry that I was in my research paper and did not notice the previous discussion. However, there are several issues of concern: 1. I am going to give a talk in our largest local open source conference (COSCUP 2013, http://coscup.org/) on 8/3, and plan to announce OpenOffice 4.0. It is the first talk after the key notes. It would be very embarrassing to announce it without a local version released. 2. There would be a large-scale deployment around August or September (6000-7000) in a government department, and they are planning to join our development force in order to fix some Chinese problems in governmental use. If OpenOffice 4.0 Traditional Chinese version is not available at that time, we could only give them 3.4.1, which their development could not be based on. I've asked our local community to help the translation in urgent. If we can finish the Traditional Chinese sidebar translation with certain amount, could it be OK to release it? Some of the table could benefit from being converted to innoDb. 3) memory/disk and other resources are fine and not a problem 4) due to the heavy php usage, the site would benefit from fast-cgi (requires httpd upgrade) 5) It seems that a lot of identical pages are been requested, using trafficserver would lower the mysql load a lot (on wiki2 the difference is more or less double). Re: Mwiki possible name change.
Considering forums.openoffice.org altogether, I would vote for wiki.openoffice.org instead of wiki.openoffice.apache.org. 1. The existing community is built on this current host name. It would only confuse the community to change it. This is especially true that we have changed it just recently. 2. It causes trouble to forward discussion thread URLs, pages when the host name is long. I want to inform the community about an ongoing discussion in Infra regarding the use of wiki.openoffice.org or wiki.openoffice.apache.org Background: We decided sometime ago to let me upgrade mwiki, which I did, with great help from many in here. After that there has been a relatively high load on the VM (very positive) and bi-daily kernel panics due to lack of resources. It was then decided to make a new VM with a new ubuntu, instead of an upgrade in place (to get rid of the kernel panic) which I deemed risky due to the state (and documentation) of the installation. I have completed the work with the new VM, and we were ready to transfer the live site. At that point I learned about plans of using https instead of http. Infra-root has a policy that all logins (not only for committers) should be done through https. Using https, requires a certificate, and the ongoing discussion is whether *.openoffice.org is really needed or if *.openoffice.apache.org would be ok. If I have understood the details correctly (sorry for being vague, but I have not been able to get a clear answer), the users would address https: wiki.openoffice.org or http:wiki.openoffice.org and get a response as https: ooo-wiki.openoffice.org or https:ooo-wiki.openoffice.apache.org. IMHO renaming goes in the wrong direction. I think we should be looking to get the entire website on to one domain, either all on openoffice.org or all on openoffice.apache.org. Splitting things up is confusing for users, makes extra work for us (and for Infra), confuses the hell out of Google Analytics. I'd really like to see everything under one domain, including our blog and even CWiki (or migrate CWiki over to MWiki). That's my ideal. Is it impossible? it is highly possible. I thought converting cwiki was taken off the table. we discussed it earlier and said it should be after the upgrade. since then no one on the mwiki side have volunteered. Sorry, I didn't mean to convert or migrate now, as part of the present set of activities. I meant longer term it would be good to get under a single domain. -Rob I have written/mailed several times that openoffice.org is a legacy, very important to AOO, and hope it has been understood. The latest discussion seems to go in the direction of getting a certificate for openoffice.org , but there are no guarantees. Is the issue cost? We could do a mini-fundraising plea on our homepage. I bet we could raise the necessary funds for the certificate. Note: If I understand the security concern with the login, aren't we in the same issue with the phpBB forums? Would a single cert be able to cover that as well? Or do we need one cert per subdomain? for some reason there seems to be resistence against wildcard cert, even though apache.org is a wildcard. latest news is that the https discussion has been postponed, so we at least can get a stable server. Regards, -Rob I have informed infra, that I cannot participate in works that causes a url name change, without having a green light from the AOO community. Meaning that I am now just monitoring what happens and not participating. I am sorry to have partly caused the current situation, I wanted to make a clean installation to make the VM easier to maintain, had I not done that, the https discussion would problaly never have surfaced. I have no deadline for the change, mainly because it is done by others, but I am convinced that Infra will end with a solution that the community can accept. Please take this as information, I cannot go into a discussion on behalf of Infra (I am not infra, but we do have other committers that are infra). Re: [PROPOSAL] New Apache OpenOffice 4 logo proposals...
Some honest thoughts: 1. These flat 3D plates feel a little weird. The lights of the plates has the focus effect, but the lights of the plates have not. 2. I cannot see the connection of these plates with our four components easily, as the colors of Writer, Calc, Impress and Base are not Blue, Orange, Green and Purple. First, congratulations to the AOO team on a successful graduation into a top-level Apache project from the Apache Incubator. Now the reason on why I am writing this email is to formally submit a logo proposal for the next version of the Apache OpenOffice 4.X logo. Previously, I submitted an initial logo on the Apache OpenOffice Google+ community but I went back to the drawing board and created a second version of the logo that both pays respect to the previous Apache OpenOffice orb, but modernizes the look of the overall logo by adding 4 colored squares that represent the four corners of our office suite (Writer, Calc, Impress, and Base) and utilizing a streamlined font. Without further introductions, below I present my official submission for the Apache OpenOffice 4.X logo. This first logo, is the proposed official logo for the project that would be used for our webpage and some other materials. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lETVSrwcgJc/UNJpH6G1sxI/ABg/JnpNrXdRgUo/s653/AOO%25204%2520LOGO%2520v2-5%2520Small%2520copy.jpg There's a secondary logo, which is basically the same logo but changes the proportion of the OpenOffice orb making it better suited for the splash screen that appears at the launch of the application. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-uy8gU24uBZw/UNJpH8UiKiI/ABk/xfXTQjO8iQg/s912/AOO%25204%2520LOGO%2520v2-2.png Hope you guys like it and Happy holidays! -- Best regards, imacat ^_*' ima...@mail.imacat.idv.tw PGP Key http://www.imacat.idv.tw/me/pgpkey.asc Woman's Voice News: http://www.wov.idv.tw/ Tavern IMACAT's http://www.imacat.idv.tw/ Woman in FOSS in Taiwan http://wofoss.blogspot.com/ OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/ EducOO/OOo4Kids Taiwan http://www.educoo.tw/ Greenfoot Taiwan http://greenfoot.westart.tw/ signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Which tweaks? If I knew then I could include it in the new version, problem is that a.o. imicat tells that there have been made modifications, and none of it seems to be documented. There are 2 ways to find it out: 1. Ask Terry Ellison himself. He left his e-mail in the user database. http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/User:TerryE 2. A more strict method: Untar a fresh-new MediaWiki 1.15, and run diff to find out what is changed. Applied the changes to MediaWiki 1.16 *on a test site* to see if they work. If they work, do the same on the live site and update the symbolic link to point to the patched MediaWiki 1.16. On 2012/12/03 06:35, janI said: JSPwiki just announced a new version: http://incubator.apache.org/jspwiki/ since it is a apache project, should we consider upgrading to jspwiki instead of continuing with mediawiki ? The upgrade will almost for sure be harder, but to me it seems beneficial to use products from our own family, that way we help them and they hopefully help us. I am also confident that it can be done without data loss, which is an absolute no-go to me, we will not accept data loss. If it is decided to go down this path, I will contact jspWiki and get involved with their work so we have a real influence on how the wiki software evolves (especially in regard of spam control). If the only benefit is our own family, I do not see this as a strong reason to risk for either data loss or hard work. Actually, the previous admin Terry may have made some tweak on the MediaWiki. The most concern for me is not data loss (we have backup), but if the wiki can still run as before. Also there are at least four questions that I see immediately. 1. You said there will be no data loss. Could we assume JSPWiki is a successor of MediaWiki? 2. Are the currently-enabled plugins have their corresponding plugins in JSPWiki? 3. Could there be a test machine that we can test first before change? 4. What will be changed on the user side? I made the fast fix, and split xmaint_uids into smaller tables, and is running now. BUT I am dead nervous of deleting wrong data !! so the review in general would be nice. I have also decided to post the user list here, to give people a chance to shout and get removed from the list. There are very little margin for errors on our database, and I would not like to cause problems (I think I already have used this years allowance). Thanks for your suggestions, I will implement a couple of your ideas before I release the final script. Thanks for this tremendous work here. I'm still fighting with my class and research project at 3:00am. ^^; This server is a virtual machine. There is a limit to its CPU power. And Andrea's suggestion is right. Join operations actually creats a big n times m table first and then filter. That sucks when n and m are both large. Jan. I didn't test any of these, and I didn't see the database, so don't trust the lines above too much! They are just semi-random thoughts based on the code I saw yesterday, and it could turn out that these changes slow down the queries instead of improving them. The Call for Papers is already open and will stay open until 12 Nov 2012 If anybody missed this: the deadline for submitting talks is 11 Nov (so in 3 days; and I was mistaken in writing 12 Nov, apparently it's closing one day earlier). North-American community members, please do submit a talk (if someone needs an incentive: having a talk accepted will save you the 1300 USD admission fee). Others are welcome too, of course. I won't attend ApacheCon NA or submit a talk, for a few reasons: I may not attend to ApacheCon NA 2013, too. Although I would love to meet more of our OpenOffice US community in person, my school project is really tight. I would have a serious problem if you see me in ApacheCon NA 2013. :p 1) Time. ApacheCon is amazing, but I can't take another week off from my, totally unrelated, job to attend the US edition too. (I also prefer to spend my money in different ways, but time is the main issue). 2) Overlapping events. In the first weekend of that month (February 2013) we will already have FOSDEM in Brussels, which I will very likely attend. 3) Conference spirit. ApacheCon US seems a business-oriented conference, while ApacheCon EU is the community edition. We have plenty of project members, especially in North America, who will feel perfectly at home in a business-oriented conference, while the community edition is just fine for me. I might be wrong about item 3, but a lot of people on this list have probably attended both ApacheCon NA and ApacheCon EU and can explain the difference better than I can.
