CC whom? The list is set in such a way that it blanks the original sender.
And no, I don't have a habit of "replying to all" in public mailing lists.
I reply to the list, if you CBA to subscribe, I can't be any more helpful to
deal with you personally.

I prefer all my daily feeds in one nice interface. Not in a ton of different
interfaces each with their own caveats. Not to mention, I don't have nearly
enough RAM to keep yet another browser tab open just to get prompt delivery of
the news feed. I have my mail server which is more than capable of playing
fetch.

So, you failed to configure the mailing list properly and opted to use
something entirely different instead?
I wonder, what's wrong with Sourceware, Samba or postfix.org, if they are
still using mailing lists today. After 30+ years.

Dia shapes are essentially SVG images with little wrapping.
Should be quite easy to make a clone and edit to your heart's content.

If all YOU see around yourself is web apps, that doesn't mean everybody is.
My only daily web app is GitHub, the rest is local, standalone applications,
which are way more useful, than any web would-be-replacement could ever be.

Yes, you can save shapes directly from Dia.
But, frankly speaking, the quality of them would be less than ideal.

It's in the Dia documentation.
User's shapes are placed in the user's profile directory.
System shapes coming with Dia, you don't have to be concerned about them.

> 3. Related to your provided template: What is the "relation" between

By the shape name exclusively.
Dia scans the entirety of "shapes" directory, then look for "sheets" and match
what it find in the sheets back to the shapes.

Heh. Heh.

Source somebody with XML/SVG knowledge to create necessary shapes for you.
Shouldn't be that hard in the university environment.

If you know just a little about SVG, it would be quite easy to write your own
shapes by hands.
I can provide a template.
Just grab the attached archive, unpack it, and move the "shapes" and "sheets"
directories into your ~/.dia/ directory.
Then launch Dia and look for "Test sheet".

This may indicate that the real size of your diagram is very, very small.
You can get layout lines (blue) to appear to see how your diagram is laid on
paper, which should give you a hint of initial real size.
The rest is left to the diagram scaling.

If these were procedurally generated objects, I can understand it.
For static shapes, you can always clone interesting shapes and add or move
connection points as you wish.

Yes, that's one of the issues with current Dia. But also this is an issue with
people trying to write essay inside an action UML block.

These are procedurally generated. Not currently possible by the end user.

Already quite easy, if you don't care about quality.

"It works" is the most you can say about it.
When you start to actually USE it, you immediately discover different small
annoyances, the more - the deeper you dive.
Even its SVG export (which is supposed to be its primary use outside itself)
is a dirty mess.

We'd all (I think I can safely say that) would prefer to have a program where
you don't have to use workarounds for things you do daily.

> I'd love to have Visio-quality diagram components,

It's largely possible already, you can design any types of shapes.
But the in-program treatment is a little bit lacking, and you won't see the
results until export.

Basically - SVG.
All high-quality shapes are hand-made.

That's a separate project, and, by the way, such a repository exists (or it
was, at one point).

Replacing the whole program UI is not a fingersnap activity.
And THAT is what needs a replacement, as the UI library used by Dia is not
supported for a decade.

Even fetchmail requires regular maintenance, as new protocols take place.

Barely works. For me at least.

It would require to rewrite Dia entirely to rip out things that build it. I
doubt anybody want to take on such task.

I was forced to switch to Chrome-based browser - there's simply no other
browsers exist nowadays, if you don't take IE into account.
I use VS Code daily.
I need 2 GB RAM upfront just to start either, starting both is 4 GB already,
and it quickly grows into 10-15 GB range as you work.
Anything but a stationary system simply unsuitable to use them.

In the contrast, I can use Dia on my netbook with just 2 GB RAM comfortable.
And not just starting and closing. The diagram I'm working with contains 1336
objects.
All it takes is… about 70 MB RAM. Two orders of magnitude less than anything
you can name.

- customizable by the end-user.
Every single other program I know fails this.

Sounds so much NIH, I don't even want to start arguing.
XML (specifically SVG) is a solid base. You can do wonders with it, all that
is needed is an improvement in rendering (handling) of shapes.

There's very little need to be changed, only moved forward in the basically
same direction it has been always moving.

All your fancy "Angular, React, and shit" are just overgrown, uncontrollable
shit.

Yes, although you would have to create your own object to do that.
The connection points are defined in the .shape file, in section.

As has been said, this means you have an item at the given coordinates, that
Dia is positioning to.

This seems to be unrelated to Dia itself, try checking your desktop manager
configuration/update drivers/reduce acceleration by a notch.

Aside from setting default working directory for a shortcut, you can add Dia
template file to the Explorer templates, and create new files before starting
Dia.

> 4. Also, why can I not change the default text font or size? It is annoying

Tck. You definitely can. Ask how, instead of complaining that you can't.

> 5. Why can’t I scroll ‘off screen’

Panning work area is done with middle mouse button.
Also there's a minimap locator at the bottom-right of the work area.

Define "cannot open" please?

Win10 should open CHM natively.
If it requires unblocking, you may find the button if you view file properties
in the explorer.

When copy between layers, first paste happens on top of copied object position.
Perhaps you unintentionally inserting the object twice, then the subsequently
pasted objects will be added with offset.

This is a link anchor permit. Layers indicated with this option will accept
anchoring when objects are moved.

F.e. I'm often placing all the objects into one layer, and all the links into
another.

It is definitely possible to move ungrouped selected objects with arrow keys,
but I'm not sure what is the problem with moving after paste.
May be try and force mode change to cursor first.
