[IxDA Discuss] Reminder: Queens of Content presentation in SF - May 20

2008-05-20 Thread Peter Merholz

[excuse the cross-posting]

Just a reminder that tomorrow Adaptive Path is hosting the Queens of
Content for a two-fer presentation at our offices at 363 Brannan.
Details here (and please use Upcoming to let us know if you're coming!)

http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/668376

We start with Kristina Halvorson, visiting from Minneapolis, talking
about:

+ Content Strategy: The Mania, the Myth, the Method
Why do so many web site projects stall out or even implode when it's
time to go find the content? Contrary to popular belief, there isn't
a Magical Server In the Sky that can instantly populate your site's
CMS. You need real people to gather it, analyze it and write it. You
also need someone who will advocate for your audience's needs long
after the IA team is gone. Find out how a content strategist can save
your large-scale site project ... and your sanity.

Kristina Halvorson has been writing for web sites since 1997. As
president of Brain Traffic, Kristina leads teams of expert web writers
to create smart, relevant content for real people with real needs. She
is a passionate advocate for content strategy, the hidden discipline
that lives between information architecture, web writing, and the
build process. Brain Traffic's clients include Target, Ameriprise
Financial, UnitedHealthcare, Caribou Coffee, and Medtronic. Follow
Kristina on Twitter: @halvorson

We then continue with Erika Hall, who will have to walk a full half
block to get to AP, presenting:

Copy as Interface
The words you use could be the most effective part of your interface.
Or they could render the experience unintelligible and hostile. The
first step is finding the right voice for your application.

Erika Hall is a co-founder of Mule Design Studio where she helps
create appealing, useful interfaces that make sense. She has been
toiling on the Web since 1995 and consulting joyfully for a decade.
Mule clients include PBS, The Wall Street Journal, MedicAlert,
Federated Media Publishing, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Shopping Cart Examples

2008-05-20 Thread Jeff Gimzek

I like the bananarepublic.com one.

the one thing that drives me nuts about it is that initial interaction
makes it seem like it is a drawer that opens and closes, but when you
click to re-open it, you leave the page.

I did an improvement on that experience for an amex site:

see

www.jdgimzek.com/blvd.html

it's a little complicated to see the add to cart action:

FIrst off, type 'polo' in the search field (lefthand side) to see
interactive results - you can click the i icon on the red shirt to
see the expanded view, then once that is open, click add to compare
icon to add the shirt to the comparison tray at the top [fake ajax
magic!].

Finally click the view prices and buy shopping cart icon to see the
individual product page, where you can Add to Cart with more AJAX
action - unlike on BananaRepublic.com, clicking the visual cart
indicator on the page OPENs the cart, rather than sending you off to
the cart page as it does on BR.com

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Branding / Identity awareness: examples of testing change?

2008-05-20 Thread Alexander Baxevanis
That's more of a general branding issue that I'm not sure I'm
qualified to answer. But I've seen lots of cases online where some
organisation changed their identity or, more frequently, got bought by
some other company. Usually this is accompanied by a lot of publicity,
so there's almost always some form of reassurance message
prominently displayed in the homescreen e.g.Although ABC Ltd. has now
been bought by XYZ Big Corp Inc. we are committed to keep our company
values and provide the same excellent level of service in our FooBar
2.0 social network etc. (see for example http://www.jaiku.com/).

It's also common that the old company name is used as a subtitle i.e.
XYZ (previously ABC) or, in the case of an acquisition, if the
acquired brand name is strong enough you often get something like XYZ
- an ABC company/brand.

An important user experience concern is to make sure that the content
of a website is consistent, i.e. all instances of ABC should be
changed to XYZ (except perhaps in a company history/about page). While
current clients/visitors may be aware of a change and may forgive some
inconsistencies, those who arrive after the change are often left
wondering what's the difference between ABC and XYZ.

Hope this helps!

[IxDA Discuss] Asking questions to participants in a positive or negative way ?

Hello,

If I want to do a survey to participant about, for example, usability of a

product is easy to use ? or rather in a negative way Did you experience
difficulties using this product ?
Or maybe I should ask them both, because a user could experience
difficulties in a product but still find it easy to use.

What do you think about that ?

More importantly, the question you that should always be asked if you
want to get any insights that will help you improve your product is
WHY they think your product is (un)usable.

 - easy
 - very easy

Alternatively, you could ask them to rate the usability from 0-5 or 0-10
 etc.

Otherwise, you do indeed risk biasing the responses. A really good book to
read on the topic is 'Improving Survey Questions: Design Evaluation'

Re: [IxDA Discuss] shape libraries for axure

2008-05-20 Thread Fred Beecher
On 5/19/08, Alinta Thornton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

What shapes are you looking for?

While there are no libraries out there that I know of, Axure does allow you
to make custom widgets. What you do is create a master, right-click on the
master, and select Behavior Custom Widget. What this does is to change the
behavior of the master such that when you assign it to any page, you can
edit each of these instances (if you edit the master, though, the changes
are not reflected in the on-page instances).

You can make this even more powerful by assigning regular masters *to* your
custom widget masters to create large, complex shapes. I use this to make
page types. I'll assign my top navigation master, left navigation master,
and right sidebar master (or whatever they all happen to be) to my custom
widget, and then I'll add individual widgets (text widgets, form fields,
etc.). I'll do this for each page type on the site. Then when I create a
page that needs to be, e.g., a hub page, I'll drag the Hub Page custom
widget to the new page and just change the stuff in the content area. This
saves huge amounts of time.

Another thing we've done at our organization is to develop a template. We
use it in one of two ways. We either start Axure projects using the
template, or we import custom widgets from it into our new projects. In
essence, it's a pseudo pattern library.

Do you have particular shapes or interactions you do the same way each time?
If so, I encourage you to set these all up as custom widgets in one Axure
file and use that file as a template like I described above. That will get
you to your shape libraries.

If you want advice on how to create particular shapes, feel free to contact
me off list.

Take care,
F.

an advocate and someone who can suggest possibilities for getting what
you want. It's true that schools and their staff want people who are

Michael,

With your years of professional experience, the undergrad GPA becomes a
smaller part of the overall admissions equation than it would for
someone just out of school. Admissions staff, professors, etc... are all
looking for ways to help you succeed. Can you contact someone at the
school(s) you're most interested in attending and discuss the issue?
If/when you do apply, I would suggest you emphasize in the essay and
through your references your dedication to learning and advancement in
the field.

Likely you would be accepted to a program on a conditional basis -
meaning if your graduate GPA isn't at a certain level after a semester
or two, you would be asked to leave the school.

If you think proving academic success would help you get into the school
of your choice, perhaps it's possible to enter a certificate program,
then apply that coursework towards a Master's degree?

good luck!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Asking questions to participants in a positive or negative way ?

2008-05-20 Thread Christine Neidley
Just a quick note: Your hypothesis sounds great. With Likert scales
(even if they're using words instead of numbers to rate the
participants response) try to use an even number of options. Four is
nice. With four options, your participant must to decide between the
two poles, but still has room to express the degree to which they
agree.

So instead of attractive/unattractive, you could have:
attractive, somewhat attractive, somewhat unattractive, unattractive
(This is just as you were saying in your hypothesis.)

I go to a lot of websites that don't necessarily sparkle, but they
aren't blaze orange with a looping midi of a Christmas carol. So I
know that I'm always grateful for a little bit of room in the middle.

One downside of being a Tech Comm graduate student, I have in fact had
nightmares about survey reports. I got to breathe, eat, and sleep this
stuff for a semester last year.

Hope this helps,
Christine

2008-05-20 Thread mark schraad
What you are prosing is called semantic differential. Think very
carefully about the terms you use... it it not as simple as you might
think. getting those terms right is the single hardest part of this
technique and has the potential to radically skew your results. There
is quite a bit of information out there now that you know what to call
it.

The problem with most lickert scale surveys (not like it, 1 - like it,
10) is that the survey will be pre bias towards an aggregate score of
seven. It is really hard to get around that when people administer the
survey and people are taking it.

I am also thinking; would bipolar scales diminish the probability of
positivity bias? I mean we could ask for example if a product is, for
example, professional. And ask participant to rate it from strongly agree to
strongly disagree. Participants would have a tendency to agree.

But if I ask participants to choose between professional and amateur, they
could not be agree of disagree, they just have to choose. And they have a
better understanding of what is being measured.

 Is my hypothesis right ?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] getting into a master's program when youhavepoorundergraduate grades?

2008-05-20 Thread Caroline Jarrett
Hi all

Don't know if this would fly in the US, but here's a suggestion: try the Open
University.

This is the UK's distance learning university. It consistently gets the highest
ratings for student satisfaction of all UK
universities, and it also has a high reputation academically.

The point being: you can sign up for postgraduate courses if you have an
undergraduate degree. And for a lot of the ones in the
computing area, there aren't any entry requirements at all: you merely have to
decide that you have enough background knowledge to
tackle it.

Warning: these courses aren't an easy option. You'll have to set aside 8 or 16
hours a week, do assignments, and take an exam.

Get a good result and you'd have demonstrated that you can stick it out at
postgrad level (= USA grad school) and pass exams at that
level.

Only a few OU courses can be studied in the USA, but luckily most of the ones
that are available are in management or computing so
are likely to be at least somewhat relevant to IXDA people .

http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/countries/USA.shtm (Note: levels 1, 2, and 3 are
undergraduate. Skip down the page a bit to get to
postgraduate).

For non-US people who might be interested: the same list applies to most
countries outside the EU. If you're inside the EU, or in
Switzerland, the Channel Islands, and a couple of other European countries then
you can study a much wider range of stuff.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Resources for new usability managers

2008-05-20 Thread Chauncey Wilson
Hello Elise,

Around 2001, Jon Innes and I had a session at UPA on Managing a
Usability Team. We brainstormed a list of problems faced by managers
and then used the fishbone diagram method to elaborate on the causes
of those problems which included things like being too successful
without enough resources, colleagues don't understand UCD, and others.
I'll see if I can dig up the notes that we put together and send them
along. There are two recent books of case studies in User Centered
Design that have some of the information you are looking for. The
book by on building an infrastructure by Eric Schaeffer has some good
points. One of the things that happens to successful UX/UE/Usability
managers is that they do a lot and don't invest in enough
infrastructure to support long-term work - things like templates that
can be re-used; best practices that can be pulled out on short notice,
etc. One of the keys to being a good manager is to understand the
goals of others and how others are measured. i wrote an article about
that in the ACM magazine Interactions a few years ago. If devlopers
are rewarded for fixing bugs, meeting schedules, and features (but not
usability or a good user experience), then you might need to get the
reward scheme changed so that involvement and measures of usability
count for them as well as you. I think that the recent new edition of
the book on ROI by Bias and Mayhew has some good stuff in it; many
companies are pushing to understand the value of usability and
managers will be asked that. It is very hard to measure the ROI since
many people play a role in design and evaluation at large companies.

[IxDA Discuss] Usage Of Print Friendly Functionality

2008-05-20 Thread Bob Sampson

Does anyone have a link to any good RD on the usage of a Print Friendly link
on a website. If it's used at all, if 1% of people click on it, etc.

There's a discussion on the guidelines of it's usage...
http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=28529
...but no discussion on IF it's actually used.

I just notice that I see it in a lot of mockups we get from ad companies(the
kids of design companies that don't do many websites), and I just don't put a
print link into any of my mockups, since I figure it's a pretty much useless
function.

Wouldn't an Open in Word be more useful? Stripping the template out, and
having a nice word doc with the content in it.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Usage Of Print Friendly Functionality

2008-05-20 Thread Christine Boese
I use it on every single site that gives me information of value that I wish
to save, or read on the subway, or in the bathtub. I do a lot of research
online, so that means I use it a lot. I hate killing the trees, but I am
ALWAYS printing.

And it makes me absolutely SCREAM when I encounter pages that are impossible
to print effectively.

That may not be the data that you are looking for, but I've never heard of
anyone calling a site's Print versions useless before. The very idea makes
me break out in hives.

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Resources for new usability managers

Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend coursework, books or other resources to help managers
understand how to handle IxD / usability professionals and manage the user
experience? (Not so much the methodology, but direct guidance on resource
planning, logistics, evangelizing usability, budget, performance metrics,
etc.)

Thanks!
Elise

[IxDA Discuss] Content inventory link ID numbering conventions

2008-05-20 Thread Elizabeth Parham
Hello!

Not a very exciting query I'm afraid, but I'm hoping you can all help me
clear up a little debate we've been having all day.
*
When doing a content inventory, is there a correct (standard) way to
number the sections starting from the home page?*

According to most sources [1] it appears to be 1.0, but then each option
from the primary navigation seems a little lost and the numbering scheme
seems to get excessively complex on account of this extra digit; the
alternative of course being to label the home page 0 and then each main menu
option 1, 2, 3 and so on [eg. 2] and some include a letter [eg. 3].

*There also seems to be some variation between the number of digits used;
does a 4 digit number imply a 3rd or 4th level page?
Is a 0 on the end understood to mean there are child pages? (though this
seems to force some unnatural numbering).
*
eg.
1.0 Home
1.1 *(or 1.1.0?)* Activities
1.1.1 *(or 1.1.1.0)* Flying
1.1.1.1 *(or ...)* Handgliding
1.1.1.1.1 Tandem
1.1.1.1.2 Solo
1.1.1.2 Parapenting
1.1.1.2.1 Tandem
1.1.1.2.2 Solo
1.1.2 Diving

1.2 Bookings

*Also, is there a specific way to treat the secondary navegation options
such as contact and site map? I figure this is where an initial letter
maybe useful.*

I know there are a lot of articles about this, but they all seem to skim
over this point or say something different. Seeing as we've got a few
redesigns on the horizon, I'd rest easier if I knew we'd got off to a good
start!

Many thanks

Elizabeth

http://www.webtechniques.com/archives/2001/10/fraser/ To create the IDs,
I start by giving every page on the site-wide navigation its own number.
Home, for instance, stands alone at the top level of the site. Its number is
1.0. At the next level, you might find About the Company, Products, and
Customer Service. These would be numbered 1.1.0, 1.2.0, 1.3.0, respectively.
Within the Products section, the Applications top page would be 1.1.1.0 and
the Service Products top page would be 1.1.2.0. If there were five Service
Products content pages below that, they would be 1.1.2.1, 1.1.2.2, 1.1.2.3,
and so on.

1.0 Home

   1.1.2.1–1.1.2.8 Staff Bios

   1.2 What We Do
