Dear Natasha,

As you may already know, there is an email list called PhD-Design set
up for people like you. Many design-researchers and PhD students are
on it; the archives are full of discussions on practice-based research
and dissertations. And related stuff.

You can find the list archives, subscription info etc at

Best of luck,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] low cost wireframing/diagramming solution?

2009-06-16 Thread Bryan Rieger

Hi Jerome,

You might want to check out Gliffy - http://www.gliffy.com/ - another
on-line diagramming tool.
I used it in the past briefly and my only real complaint for basic
diagramming was the lack of off-line support, which caused me to move
to OmniGraffle.

They offer a free and a reasonably priced premium service based on the
number of users, but the free version may in-fact meet your needs.

If you're only doing things now and again then there are other applications
you can use at a pinch. For example Powerpoint can be used to create
wireframes. I've yet to find a online tool that is offers much more than you
can do in powerpoint. Usual tools are Omingraffle and Visio, they more or
less do the same thing. I'm currently dabbling with Flash Catalyst but it
has a few holes at the moment in the Beta but is available free for the time

Others use Illustrator / In Design and pototyping tools like Axure - or just
sketch it on paper or on a white board. A few use photoshop but it's not
great at vectors and can make it tempting to try and impliment before you

[IxDA Discuss] Setting up local group in Birmingham, UK

2009-06-16 Thread Kevin Rapley
Hello. I have taken the first step of starting a local group in
Birmingham, UK. I am now looking for IxDA folk in the local area who
will be interested in helping me get this up and running. I will be
looking to represent the Midlands as this is the only local group in
the area.

I would like to hear from local leaders from other areas to hear how
you grew your local area. What challenges did you face? What has
worked well? What has not worked so well?

I would especially like to hear from the local leaders in the UK and
liaise with you.

Over the coming weeks I will be making contact with friends who work
for digital agencies in the locale to see if they, or colleagues
firstly know about the list and if they wish to join the organisation

[IxDA Discuss] Recommendations for icon-designers?

2009-06-16 Thread Niklas Mortensen
Currently working on a suite of web-apps (CMS, CRM, task- and
project-management etc). The UI is in large part going to be
white-labeled by the various clients and consequently the little
graphics that are going to be universally present will in large part
set the visual tone of the apps.

I've been searching the good ol' interweb for the above-mentioned
resources, but was wondering if anyone here has any good
recommendations for talented icon designers suited for this kind of
work? Remote working is no problem.

All input and nudges to get me on the right track towards interface
gorgeousness is much appreciated.

[IxDA Discuss] Music to Design to - What gets your creative juices flowing?

2009-06-16 Thread Debug Design
Its over a year since the last post like this...

Music is important to me when designing as it helps inspire, keeps me
creative and helps me stay in the zone. Personally I find more ambient
music more effective as catchy tunes can often find you singing along
or breaking into a guitar riff mid design.

Good design music can also be project dependent as it can set the
scene or create a mood and you might need an upbeat set of tunes for
one and a more obscure set of tunes for something more abstract.

- Kid Loco
- Sigur Rós
- Herbaliser
- The Avalanches
- St Germain
- M83
- Beta Band
- Kruder Dorfmeister

- John Williams / Hans Zimmer music Scores

So whether I am designing or coding a website, struggling with that
initial logo concept or just trying to get your head outside of that
box music always helps... so any suggestions are welcome!

Even though I'm now 50, I seem to NEED Metallica's Black Album to
code to when starting any new project. It seems to get me in the mood
for lots of fiddly tags, CSS IDs and controls! ;-) I must admit,
however that after over 10 years of Metallica I can now almost do the
same with White Zombie! I think it is just the noise that blanks
everything out around me. Works well in the office or late at night.
Better than coffee!

Once I'm going, though the music I listen to will depend on the job.
I've had good results with Ska, Reggae and even went through a time
when it had to be BritPop, but thankfully that phase has passed and
after seeing the movie The Boat that Rocked, I'm back onto 60s
and 70s music by the Kinks, the Hollies and the Easybeats! (Man, I
love iTunes search!)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Best practices for Country location and languages on Global Websites (was Language Picker)

2009-06-16 Thread Sofia Ferres
Always ALWAYS do for the user what you can do for them.

I wouldn't say always DO, i'd rather say always give the flexibility to
CHOOSE, because we never know exactly what all users want or need. Gregor, I
totally agree with you. Google search is my top of mind example for this
kind of behavior - always send me to Brazil's sites even though I didn't
start my search at .com.br
Facebook and Youtube ask me (although they ask me every log-in!) if I want
to migrate to portuguese version of its sites...

In the other hand, if I always translate some words from portuguese to
english, couldn't Google Translate always offers me that option right in
the first position, as default? This would be still flexibility to choose,
but with some intelligence behind it.

It definitely comes down to personal preference. I know a lot of people like
to accompany their keyboard time with electronic/ambient music. I tried that
but it never really stuck.

So I listen to light/indie rock and some instrumental, like Josh Rouse,

[IxDA Discuss] Evaluating off-the-shelf products

2009-06-16 Thread Craig Melbourne
Has anybody on the list had any experience of evaluating off-the-shelf
products for usability and quality of user experience.

I'm working with a company whose philosophy is to, where possible,
buy a product rather than build. The evaluation of such products is
based on supporting business processes and conforming to technology
infrastructure (and, of course, cost). They are now seeing the need
to include UX in the evaluation process but are not sure how.

I've done a bit of work with them on techniques for gathering user
research and how that data informs an iterative design process.
However, 'user centered procurement' is not something I have real
experience with.

I have recommended expert reviews and usability exercises during the
evaluation phase, but this isn't neccesary viable at the early
stages when there are a large number for products.

Is there a standard set of questions for vendors?

Is anyone aware of any good books/papers on a methodology around this
subject?

New Age music is particularly useful to me. It lets me focus on the
important, frees my mind from the unnecessary, and takes me to a
world of imagination:)

I've also seen designers listen to pop music or rock music to pump

seemed to like classical music when they were doing reflective type of

I'd say integration and excitement. Meaning it has to answer the
question how well does it fit with my existing computer system,
PIM, music service, service provider, headset, etc.? and how much
does this phone excite me about doing things I couldn't before?

We don't even have a way of reliably prejudging two of the most

varies so much by usage.

do anything cool. The iPhone can't notice something around you that you're
interested and tell you about it, it can't notify someone else something
about your status that it knows -- it basically can't do much that is
smart on its own. Everything involves the user having to do something
which is really limiting. I think that once the apps for the Pre are
unleashed that harness the power of backgroundprocessing and
multi-threading, that device is going to be incredibly appealing.

I'd say integration and excitement. Meaning it has to answer the
question how well does it fit with my existing computer system,
PIM, music service, service provider, headset, etc.? and how much
does this phone excite me about doing things I couldn't before?

We don't even have a way of reliably prejudging two of the most
critical, battery life and signal reception/transmission, since it
varies so much by usage.

Kevin,

I'll be moving back to the UK from Shanghai for my PhD in September

me...I've noticed that there is a distinct lack of local groups in
the UK; 3 are listed, and this B'ham one would be the closest(!)

[IxDA Discuss] Swansea Local Group

2009-06-16 Thread Karl Proctor
I hope this is posted in the right place, but apologies if not and
admin feel free to remove...

I'll be moving back to the UK for my PhD in September and was
wondering if there is a local group, such as the one here in
Shanghai, in or near Swansea. I've had a look at the map and it
seems that the UK is lacking in local groups, with only 3 listed...

If not then I guess my closest will be the start-up one in
Birmingham, but not exactly within walking or biking distance!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Palm Pre

2009-06-16 Thread Karl Proctor
For me, something that would make a device 'stand out from the
crowd' would be a decent battery life, even if it meant a little
more weight. I've had the original (2G) iPhone for around 18 months
or so now and my biggest gripe is the poor battery life. Even on a
good day I would be lucky to get close to 2 days usage between
charges (no wifi, no email and 2-3 hours iPod per day). At the moment
the battery life is barely 24 hours, so I'm looking to upgrade to a
newer mobile. My choices are either the Pre or the LG Arena, but the
biggest deciding factor will be the battery life and I'll happily
pay extra if needed for better performance...

I _wish_ I could listen to music while working.

Every single possible type of music ends up distracting my attention
so much it might as well be fingernails on a chalkboard.

I'm not sure why that is .. I've heard of a few other people having
the same problem, but I think it's more rare than common.

I can't listen to anything while working it has to be as silent as
possible. Then, I get into a 'zone'.. tilt my head a little to the
right (don't ask me why this happens as I can't explain it) and
have at it.

Nothing gets my blood flowing like fast and loud punk/pop-punk. Here
are some of my favorite songs:

Saves the Day - Shoulder to the Wheel
Allister - Somewhere Down on Fullerton
Strung Out - Paperwalls
Blink 182 - Touchdown Boy
Pennywise - Surfin' USA
Ramones - Judy is a Punk

After that initial burst of energy I like more downtempo electronic
stuff such as Goldfrapp, Daft Punk, Air, and Zero 7.

[IxDA Discuss] Any latest Radio Button interactions with accordion combined??

2009-06-16 Thread Nancy
Hi Folks,

I have a design dilemma and wanted to get thoughts from folks here:

The challenge is that I have 2 radio button and one of the button
when selected has a list that drops down and it is a mini datatable
with 2 columns and a dropdown. This would be okay if the number of
rows remained constant but it changes all the time and can be very
long for a drop down and almost feels like some optical illusion
happened.

Any ideas on what is the best/optimal way to address this issue?

Thanks,
Nancy

Re: [IxDA Discuss] examples of practical research Ph.D programmes

2009-06-16 Thread camille moussette
Hi Natasha,

I'm presently enrolled in a Ph.D program at the Umeå Institute of
Design with a focus on Interaction Design. The program is meant to be
practice-based, with real design research projects in
collaboration with companies and/or external collaborators.

There is also a young initiative (started in December 2007) here in
Sweden called Center for Research in Design. It consists of a
nationwide group of students and supervisors who are undertaking Ph.D
studies in Design. We have discussed, explored and debated internally
many issues about what can be referred to practical research or
practice-based Ph.D studies

Some basic about the group. It is only in Swedish as of now:
http://www.kth.se/itm/centra/designfakulteten

with Google's Transalate it's not so bad:

We have regular meetings every second month. Feel free to contact me
or Karin Blombergsson, the group's secretary for further
information.

yeah.. I connect with music so intensely that, I have a hard time
focusing on anything but the music if the source is in close

Actually, I'm able to have Brian Eno's Ambient One: Music for

In addition to all the other answers, you can try the openoffice.org
draw application (requires a download of the whole suite, but it
costs nothing). It has a reasonable diagram function which I've used
in the past. There's no reason it couldn't be used for wireframing

[IxDA Discuss] Reminder: Silicon Valley IxDA Event :: Practicing Innovation Through Innovation Workshops :: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 :: at Yahoo!

2009-06-16 Thread Pabini Gabriel-Petit
Please join us Wednesday at this Silicon Valley IxDA event! Jim
Nieters of Yahoo! will speak about Practicing Innovation Through
Innovation Workshops.

When: Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Socializing: 7:00-7:30 pm

Program: 7:30-9:30 pm

Where: Yahoo! Sunnyvale Campus

Building C, Classroom 5
701 First Avenue
Sunnyvale, CA 94089

Practicing Innovation Through Innovation Workshops
Jim Nieters

As user experience (UX) researchers and designers, we want to design
products that change the world—to engage in strategic design. Often,
though, UX researchers and designers get stuck with incrementalism:
Designing minor, new features for which another functional group has
provided the requirements, expecting UX to design it—whether the UX
team agrees with the product direction or not. Perhaps we find
ourselves immersed in work routines that do not provide us space to
think differently. In this talk, Jim Nieters presents some tools that
foster innovation and can help you get multidisciplinary teams aligned
with your big ideas. First, Jim will talk about ten general principles
that foster innovation. Then, he'll focus on one particular method:
innovation workshops. Jim will help you understand how to lead
innovation workshops—within your companies, design firms, or
universities—that foster collaboration, trust, and free expression.
These workshops enable intensive brainstorming, purposeful play,
design, usability testing, and rapid iteration.

Bio: Jim Nieters is Director of User Experience Design for online
advertiser products at Yahoo!, including search marketing and the open
ad management platform, APT from Yahoo! (apt.yahoo.com). In this role,
he works to ensure the user experience is a strategic differentiator
for the business. Jim conducts innovation workshops at Yahoo! and
teaches members of the UX community at Yahoo! how to conduct
innovation workshops, which they call Yahoo! Design Labs (YoDeLs).

Before moving to Yahoo!, Jim built and led the central UED group at
Cisco and turned it into an internal consultancy that tracked over
$200 million in revenue increases each year based on innovation and
design. He has been a UX design practitioner for more than 15 years
and a UX leader for nine of those years.

Jim specializes in UX organizational leadership, process enhancement,
and organizational transformation. He writes a regular column on
leading UX teams for UXmatters (www.uxmatters.com), Management
Matters, and speaks frequently at conferences and universities on
innovation and leading UX organizations. Jim particularly enjoys being
part of teams that think big and deliver innovations that change
market dynamics.

Its over a year since the last post like this...

http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=39321 ;-)

My choice depends upon the work. For coding complicated stuff or
really working on interaction, then silence is best for me. Rock
music does the job when I want some ideas (paper prototypes / loose
concepts), classical (esp Bach) for putting things together
(wireframing), stuff like Sylvian or later Talk Talk / Mark Hollis
for artistic stuffs (high fidelity prototypes).

I sense a kind of progression here...

http://www.wired.com/listening_post/2008/04/a-scientific-at/

22 minutes of music genius.

I enjoy coding to it. And other interesting music like Balinese
Gamelan and Traditional Indian. Why? Like all creative acts, coding
requires interesting external input to lead down new paths.

This song leads to new ideas.

[IxDA Discuss] cite, MySpace Exe cutes 30% Staff Reduction Today

2009-06-16 Thread Jarod Tang
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/16/myspace-executes-30-staff-reduction-today/

as we know, there was a myspace enduring effort on ( redesign, ... ), it
seems facebook win the last year ( and this year ), quite interesting to
reflect ( especially at the facebook's user's strongly against its last
redesign).

What's the cause of this phenomenon from design's perspective?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA Mentorship Program

2009-06-16 Thread Janna Hicks DeVylder
Did you see Kim Goodwin's talk at Interaction'09 about Each One, Teach One?

http://library.ixda.org/node/9

I walked away feeling more invigorated about the work IxDA is doing, and am
especially proud of the people who have now made IxDA's Mentorship Program
come to life. Sometimes the most effective way to foster and grow
interaction design as a discipline is one person at a time. Here's your
chance.

I just raised my hand to be a mentor. Won't you join me?

form as
thoroughly as you can. Please note that, while we hope to find
mentors for everyone who needs them, there is no guarantee that we
will find a perfect match for you. The mentorship initiative starts
digitally, through email, but can extend in whatever direction you
and your mentor see fit.
