[IxDA Discuss] video sharing / hosting
Hi IXDA I'm about to start work on a concept for a video sharing site to sit behind a corporate firewall and I'm looking for examples of best practice. I'm currently looking at what works well / not so well in YouTube, Vimeo, iPlayer, Ted. What advice would you give me? Has anyone carried out research into video sites and how people use them? In an ideal world we'd carry out extensive research ourselves, but in this case there isn't time / budget unfortunately. What do you think works well in the current video sites? How would you redesign YouTube or Vimeo? Thanks for your thoughts! Sam www.pixelthread.co.uk www.onebigfield.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] video sharing / hosting
Being a corporate video site I'd presume the requirements are considerably different than a public one. What sort of quantity of videos are you considering? Certainly not YouTude scale, I would think. Will they fall into clear categories? Training, Corporate Messaging, Company Meetings, User Research, etc. Will uploads come from many sources in the company, or all through one, or a small group of people? Can they all be available to anyone with network access, or do some need tighter security on some files because of sensitive information? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] [PLUG] Workshop • Wireframe s with EightShapes Unify • August 21, 2009 • Washington, DC
[Please forgive the cross-posting!] The holy grail of design documentation is efficiency. You want to spend your time solving design problems, not fiddling with annotations or getting your wireframes to line up just so. EightShapes Unify, a collection of templates, stencils, and components can help you get there. With this pile of Lego-like page elements, you can put together wireframes in no time, and save your cycles for noodling on the difficult problems. Adobe InDesign offers powerful features for taking this efficiency and productivity to the third degree, without sacrificing polish or detail. Join us in Washington, DC for Wireframes with EightShapes Unify, a half-day workshop on how to master efficient wireframing using our popular template library for Adobe InDesign CS4. New to InDesign? We'll teach you what you need to know to start wireframing, and teach the old-timers a few tricks along the way. By the end of this workshop, you'll know: - How to setup and extend your own wireframe templates in Adobe InDesign - How to rapidly create wireframes from scratch, from pre-existing symbol libraries, and from libraries of components and page types - How to modularly reuse wireframe artwork within and across projects - How to choose the right way to reuse artwork, via embedded artwork, library panels, or linked files - How to flexibly reuse wireframe artwork for quick design reviews, storyboarding longer flows, low-fi clickable prototypes, and annotated documents *Details* Date: *August 21, 2009, 1pm-5pm* Location: Marvin Center at GW University • *800 21st St NW* (convenient to Foggy Bottom metro) Cost: *$244* *Register here: http://eightshapes.com/2009/06/03/wireframes-with-eightshapes-unify-august-2009-workshop/ * -- Dan Brown, Principal • (301) 801-4850 EightShapes, LLC • eightshapes.com Also at: communicatingdesign.com • greenonions.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Hi Mike - Not hugely different requirements, but definitely lower quantities! Categorisation will probably be done through tagging, and videos can be uploaded by anyone and available to anyone inside the firewall... Re: [IxDA Discuss] Are We The Puppet Masters? The Ethics of IxD.
Brad Nunnally wrote: Control is simply the absence of that choice. I always use supermarkets in the US as an example of controlling their customers behavior. On average, the most common thing people want when going to a supermarket is milk. The managers know this, and put it as far away as possible from the entrance, forcing customer to walk past other products. Customer just don't have the choice to by-pass other products, and their path is controlled by the store (to a certain extent). Supermarkets are a wonderful place to find this sort of thing. My favorite example is the on sale, limit N sign. Marketing types figured out that if the store puts a big on sale, limit N sign over something instead of a on sale sign, customers are more likely to buy N items than just one or two items. Is that simply good marketing or is it an unethical attempt to get people to do something they wouldn't normally do? -- J. [IxDA Discuss] Need your help with survey research project
Hi all - I'm working on a project to help small companies more effectively do quick and dirty user research. Looking for volunteers to either: - share past surveys with me (send me the questions, feel free to anonymize specific details) OR - have a 5-10 minute conversation (via email, IM, or phone) about the types of decisions or learnings that your team makes based on survey research You'll have my gratitude and I'll share with you what I've learned in a couple weeks when this project wraps up. Thanks! [IxDA Discuss] Endless.com code snippet (Tread: Long list with multi-select )
I would love to do some testing with the multi-select that several folks suggested that is on endless.com. ( http://www.endless.com/landingpage/brandwomen/ref=home_sb_wm?node=242169011landingType=department ) I searched for awhile for a code snippet/plugin to use that has the same functionality without any luck. Before I break open the jQuery documentation and start from scratch has anyone seen of have an example I can use for the web?
