Have a look at this discussion that will do what you want (and more,
actually, but you can always ignore/not use the bits you don't want)

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18597 ... make sure you
read all the way to the end, in its first release I don't think it
would have met your need, but I think it will now.

There was also a discussion on other ways of achieving this at

Thanks Dean. Kevin from support has been helping with this.

I upgraded to yesterday's nightly inc. firmware 35 and the situation
does seem to have improved, though it seems to still be running with a
low buffer. The couple of tracks I played played without a skip.

I'll be testing extensively this weekend and will post back my

[slim] How can I speed up the web interface?

2006-02-24 Thread jonmyatt

Hi all

It takes about 10-15 seconds for the web interface to appear for me.
I've switched to MySQL and that didn't make a difference, although
searching is now super fast. My server is a fairly new P4 2.4Ghz with
1Gb RAM running Fedora Core4. It doesn't do anything other than run
slimserver. I'm using server version 6.2.2-6245 from a few days ago. My
music library is pretty small I'd have said - just over 5000 songs.

Looking at the server now, whilst it's streaming music, it's at 98%
idle.

Also, if I browse music folder the music being played stops
momentarily, and the CPU usage shoots up to about 98% busy
(slimserver.pl).

What steps should I take to get to the bottom of these two problems?
Which debugging flags should I be looking at?

Thanks for any help...

Jon.

You have activated some formats which need external binaries to do

A couple of questions - are you using ITunes at all (either the update

How is your music library set up - networked drive or on the hard drive

What browser / what skin ?

Wired or wireless connection for the SB ?

I'm running Slimserver on an [underpowered] 2 year old Buffalo

interface takes no more than 4/5 seconds to come up on average, so
hopefully it will be something that can be tweaked for you.

[slim] FLAC tagging and Cover Art

2006-02-24 Thread Danguard

Hello,
I would like to change my collection of MP3 to FLAC, i'm redoing all
the re-encoding of it, but now i have some problem
At the moment i'm using mp3 with all tags defined, including cover art
for each file.
Now there's the problem: i tried a lot of software searching to include
the coverart inside the Flac, but it seems nearly impossible :-/
I tried with Mp3Tag, Media Tagger, The Godfather, everyone always don't
give me the possibility to add the coverart.
To be more specific, seems that it's impossible to add an ID3v2 tag
with cover art inside
I would like to understand if i'm trying to do something impossible, or
if someone already tried it, i would like to ask how they managed to do
it work correctly.

(Another thing: on my PC i'm using WinAmp + CD case to display the
cover while playing the file, i would like to be able to do it using
always the same program using the Flac file and maybe the Id3v2 Tag)

Am i trying to do something impossible or am i doing something wrong?

Thank you for your help.

connect using SoftSqueeze. But sometimes I'd like to use Winamp
 instead.

If I pull up the web UI, the office computer player doesn't show up (I
have one called 'WorkPC - Winamp', in which I've set up the desired
bitrate limiting and other preferences). If I try to connect to
stream.mp3 at this point I get a synch error in Winamp. Ok, there's no
stream happening, so I understand that. I guess.

So I play something to a Squeezebox on my home(?) network. Now I can
connect to stream.mp3 from Winamp, but I get no music. I suppose that
makes sense, the music isn't being streamed to this player.

Now, at this point the player will show up in the SlimServer web UI and
I can then add music to its playlist. Press 'play' again in Winamp and
I get music on the office PC.

All pretty damned confusing, as I'm not sure exactly what's going on
here. Is there an explanation, or is this just the quirky way this has
 to work?

it would appear that's the way it works unless you use softsqueeze. i
was doing the same thing for a week or so

There is no point in changing your mp3 into flac files. By encoding
into mp3 you have already lost data.

If you want to have flac files you have to re-rip and encode to flac.
Simply re-encoding mp3 files to flac will only accomplish creating good
copies of lossy files.

Once you have the flac files generated you can use 'TagRename 3.2'
(http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm) to take care of tagging and cover
art.

I've just bought a second hand SLIMP3 player.

Nice machine, but mine doesn't work like it should. It finds te server,

- ss (winxp) 6.2 on desktop via crossover cable
- ss (debian under VMware/win32) 4.2 on desktop crossover cable
- ss (debian under VMware/win32) 6.2 on desktop crossover cable

I've also upgraded the firmware from v2.2 to v2.3. I tried both
automatic and manual configs. The player can find the server without
any problems (and has for a moment even played some music!) but it's
unstable as hell!

Does this sound familiar to someone ? Any help is appreciated.

IMO, Slim Devices would be crazy not to include a radio and CD player in
any boombox design. How many people are going to buy a boombox that you
can only use in your house and maybe your yard? Put in a tuner and CD
player, and you can take it anywhere. The additional cost is not that
great, and you've greatly enhanced usability.

Thanks for the replies.

I did a bit of digging around the schema as well in the meantime.

I devised the following query which is useful for listing which songs
you have listened to recently. Unfortunately, slimserver only records
lastPlayed on a per track basis... which means you can't get an exact
listing of what you have been listening to. However, if you are happy
to see a listing of the most recently played tracks (subtly different)
then this will work:

select from_unixtime(lastPlayed),t.title,a.title,c.name
from tracks t, contributors c, contributor_track ct, albums a
where t.playCount is not NULL
and t.id = ct.track
and ct.contributor = c.id
and t.album = a.id
order by t.lastPlayed desc;

I think they'd be smarter to put a small (80Gb) hard disk and a slug in
it and make it self-contained when taken out of wifi range. Good
software that allowed you to say let me take all my beach music to the
beach and then downloaded from the Terabyte store we all have ( :-) )
80Gb of beach music and you're good to go.

Same guts, different case, could go in my car. Same idea. When parked
in the garage, connects via wifi (doesn't everyone have a hot spot in
their garage) and downloads the latest - songs, podcasts, etc.

[slim] Re: Problem: Can't connect to wireless network

2006-02-24 Thread Dave G

Marc and Crooner,

Thanks for the followup advice. I finally got everything working after
a quick call to Slim Devices tech support on Wednesday evening -- my
problem started Friday night, and between the long weekend and family
stuff on Tuesday, this was the first chance I had to call them. The
problem, as you suspected, was that the router somehow had lost all my
settings. Once I reentered the settings and changed channels, my
Squeezebox was finally able to recognize the network, but it couldn't
establish a connection. It took the tech just a minute or so to figure
out that I was not putting the right password into my Squeezebox
settings. I kept entering the password for my local network, when I
should have been entering the key I had created for WPA encryption.

Thanks again.

That bit sounds wrong. You should get a silent stream.

I concur. I just tried this very thing this AM in an effort to
debug something related to the player itself.

As soon as you point xmms/winamp at [yoururl]:9000/stream.mp3 you
should get a silent stream at 320K. That's how you can tell if

Just my experience.

Just to clarify, I've posted about 50 times in these forums pointing
people to ripping, tagging, and replaygain guides. As Slim becomes more
popular the technical background of its user base drops.

The point of these guides (as the name Beginner's Guide suggests) is
not to give every option or even to provide what I'd consider advanced
features.

The point was to get new users no familiar with the technology a
one-stop guide to get the collection ripped, tagged, replaygained and
into SlimServer.

I think this consolidated guide does a pretty good job. If you don't
think so, please feel free to update it... thats the whole point. My
only request is that you keep things as simple as possible... covering
every single option at every single step is just going to make it an
overwhelming (and thus useless) guide.

Yep, it worked from a PC on the LAN, as you said, with a 'silent'
stream.

Today, it's also working like this today from the office PC. One
difference between today and yesterday, though, is that the 'WorkPC -
Winamp' remained in the server's list of players overnite. I'm
wondering whether the player needs to be listed by the server for this
to work smoothly. What causes the player to be removed from the
server? I assume there must be some sort of time period after which
these software players get removed, even though their preferences
remain in SlimServer's data file.

It's because that webpage is the first google hit for 'slimedevices'.
If you look at the reader reviews, one of the people typed slimedevices
when they meant slimdevices, which is what google is hitting.

If you just enter slimedevice into google, while it brings up that page
first, it does ask you 'did you mean slim device?' which then links you

Disable the library statistics (Server Settings/Performance). This
 might speed it up.
I recall this being talked about but hadn't noticed that it had been
implemented. Nice.

When library statistics are enabled, does _every_ page take this
performance hit, or is the information cached somewhere?

Any chance of creating a statistics page in the server settings area,
so that library statistics could be disabled, but the information still
readily available without having to toggle the setting on and off?

You can get the list of players from the player or players query.
Once you have each player id, you can use the mode ? query: if it

query that returns a lot of info on a player, including what it plays if
it does play.

 let alone a when-did-it-start-playing query

This is not currently kept track of in SlimServer, and consequently not

Well, Jim, you could look at it this way: The progress bar taken by
itself, indicates how much of the song has played. Now, whether the
digits to the right are indicating time remaining or time played, the
song still starts, it plays for a while and then it ends, and that's
what the progress bar reflects.

(I can't believe I've chimed in on this ...)

[slim] Linksys's new Slim-killer

2006-02-24 Thread kewe65

Linksys has a new product out called an audio bridge

http://tinyurl.com/fv6pj

This device has software that allows you to use *ANY* media playing
software to stream over your existing wireless network to the stereo of
choice. By definition, I should be able to use JRiver Media Center to
stream wirelessly over 54g to my stereo any file format that software
plays, which includes Apple's .m4p...

I've been engaging in several lengthy discussions on this forum over
the streaming of any audio source to the SqueezeBox, such as:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20083page=9
and
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18764page=4

This product and it's associated software claims to do exactly what i
was hoping the SlimServer software could accomplish to warrant
purchasing the hardware.

I have one on order so haven't tried it out yet, but the reviews look
promising.

If there was one single thing on the what's next list for Slim, it
ought to be this sort of capability. The fact that this product was
developed and put on the market should be evidence enough that there is
*some* decent interest in getting any audio that is sent to your audio
card also streamed wirelessly to the stereo.

[slim] Re: Linksys's new Slim-killer

2006-02-24 Thread snarlydwarf

It has serious limitations that make it useless for me (and many others
probably):

The first two are related. This device behaves exactly as a Long Cable
From Your Sound Card would behave:
1) No display.
2) No remote.

I have no PC in the living room, and none in my bedroom. I would have
to walk across the house to play music in the bedroom.

3) Windows Only.
4) Limit of one device per PC. If I wanted sound in the bedroom, I'd
have to have a second PC to serve it.

I would still have no use for it.

I don't see the benefit of it at all, actually. Since you need a
genuine Windows PC to control it, you're bringing a PC into your
listening space, at which point you may as well just run the PC sound
card outputs to your amp and save the money. (Unless you like running
into another room to queue up some tracks, hit the 'play' button, and
then run back to your listening room.)

You know what? I don't even care.

It's innevitable -- there *will* be competing devices. There may come
easier to use or better engineered devices. But the SqueezeBox works
for me and I'm happy with it, and more importantly, with Slim Devices,
as a company. Try getting some personal attention from Cisco/Linksys. I
doubt they have the time or resources to give an airborne act of
copulation about you.

At one time, there was something called brand loyalty. Companies often
sit on their laurels (or worse), and abuse that loyalty, but at least
at this point, if there was ever a company that was earning its brand
loyatly, it's Slim.

The American consumer needs to rediscover the notion that when you buy
something, you're not just buying a product at the lowest price, or
that's easiest to get, or whatever; you're buying a product from
*someone*.

2006-02-24 Thread aubuti

Slimserver itself doesn't do this, but it will use volume normalization
that is stored in the tags/comments in the music file. For example,
FLAC files have replaygain (replaygain_album_gain,
replaygain_track_gain, etc.). I don't know how MP3 or other file
formats handle it. What format are your files in?

Robin Bowes has a real nice Perl script that will apply replaygain tags
to any flac encoded files in your music library. It's called
apply_replaygain.pl, and you can search for it on this forum.

A lot of people use foobar for this instead. It appears that foobar
will apply replaygain to MP3s and other formats as well as flac.

one of the design goals of a boombox is rugged. It'd have to be a pretty
pricey hard drive /slug /sb / speaker combo to survive a spill out of the

required for moving from room to room or backyard... important thing is
that it's all in one box so you can carry it around.

I've just bought a second hand SLIMP3 player.

Nice machine, but mine doesn't work like it should. It finds te server,
but when i press play it hangs. The menu freezes and i cannot ping the
 player anymore.

 It tried many different setups:

 - ss (winxp) 4.2.4 on laptop via linksys router and WiFI
 - ss (winxp) 6.2 on laptop via linksys router and WiFI
 - ss (winxp) 6.2 on desktop via linksys router and ethernet
 - ss (debian under VMware/win32) 4.2 on desktop via linksys router and

 - ss (debian under VMware/win32) 6.2 on desktop via linksys router and
 ethernet
 - ss (winxp) 6.2 on desktop via crossover cable
 - ss (debian under VMware/win32) 4.2 on desktop crossover cable
 - ss (debian under VMware/win32) 6.2 on desktop crossover cable

I've also upgraded the firmware from v2.2 to v2.3. I tried both
automatic and manual configs. The player can find the server without
any problems (and has for a moment even played some music!) but it's
 unstable as hell!

Does this sound familiar to someone ? Any help is appreciated.

the slimp3 has a very small buffer, but I'd still expect all these to
work. In the 6.x versions, has the server finished building its library? I
don't recall if 4.x had to chew on it for a while or not...

Re: [slim] How can I speed up the web interface?

2006-02-24 Thread Jack Coates

 (slimserver.pl).

browse music folder is a lot slower than the other methods. Also, which
skin are you using? If you specify Light or Handheld and Browse New Music,
does that perform well? Is the browser on localhost, or on another
machine?

Re: [slim] Re: Is there a play history feature?

I too think that a history log for songs played from your music library
would be useful (particularly for those with large collections) it
could be set up as a recently played list and from the webinterface you
could define how many tracks are to be kept in the list - say the last
 100 tracks...

I dont know any kind of programming that would enable me to develope
such a plugin - although I would be interested in learning.. however
where does a newbi like myself start?

Simply extend the database schema by one column, record the time played in
there, and then copy the new music feature :) Oh wait, that's not very
simple... maybe I'll just finish cleaning out the inbox and go to bed. in
the meantime, use slimscrobbler and last.fm to get what you want.

[slim] Re: Linksys's new Slim-killer

2006-02-24 Thread joncourage

1 device to 1 computer correlation would strike me as a deal-killer.

Also, I'd be a bit skeptical about the audio quality out of a
networking-oriented company... but who knows?

Display and remote aren't huge things for me.

And while at first I didn't really get or appreciate slimserver, I
now really understand the massive benefits of a tag-database-based
interface - the practical organizational benefits of this design makes
tags truly useful to me for the first time and provide by far the best
playback and music-access interface of any PC-based player I've ever
used (and prying me away from WinAmp was no small task), even though
the actual GUI can be a bit klunky. The webserver implementation is
also a great thing, really making client-side device control both
generic and very portable, and is a huge convenience with a ton of
sex-appeal.

Re: [slim] Re: Duplicate Artists

2006-02-24 Thread Jack Coates

I experienced something very similar when I was using WMP to tag my
files. Even though the artist tag looks the same in one piece of
software, it is (not sure if this is actually, or just perceived by
Slimserver) seen as two different artists.

The fact that it seems to be fine, then gets bad again may be because
of the ITunes database refresh if you are using ITunes to tag your
 files.

I would suggest downloading a third party tagging program. I use Tag
Rename which has a free 30 day trial, but some people find it overly
complicated. Select the album that is giving your trouble and force a
retag of the *artist* field for *all* of the songs in the album. Not
just the song that is giving you trouble.

Then select clear and rescan library in Slimserver. That should sort
the problem out. Let us know if not.

are you using the LazySearch plugin
(http://hickinbottom.demon.co.uk/development/slimserver-development/lazy-search/)?
It had a problem with 6.1/6.2 and would cause duplicates when you used
browse music folder. This was fixed in the 6.5 branch only.

FWIW, I use Lazy Search on 6.2.1 and just avoid browsing music folder.

[slim] Re: Slimserver will not find audio files within a subdirectory of a mapped drive

2006-02-24 Thread ronjon

I'm using an external sata drive attached using a USB as my media
storage and I'm having the exact same problem. The (WinXP) disk
manager says this is a 'dynamic' drive.

The first scan appeared to work correctly, then I added more music and
it wouldn't find them on a scan for new music. I tried clear and
rescan everything and lost everything, no amount of rescanning helped.
I tried the 'Play All' option and it re-added everything minus the album
art (no biggie to me). Clearly this is either a bug or external hard
drives just aren't supported.

The workaround is a-ok with me, but if anyone else has found a
solution, please add it to this thread.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Re: Is there a play history feature?

2006-02-24 Thread Philip Meyer
Actually, the track stat plugin stores the last played time for each track. It
should be possible to create a SQL playlist to play the last n tracks played
(via the SQL Playlist plugin).

The only problem is it isn't a complete history, as it only records the last
played time of each track.

Also, it will by default queue up n tracks, after which it would repeat those
tracks.
