[slim] Re: SB2 and WPA with Draytek routers

2006-03-17 Thread Wirsing

Unfortunately I have the same issue between my Draytek 2800VG and the
SB3.
The SB3 just won’t connect to the 2800VG using WPA-PSK or WPA2.
Until a month ago I was using a Draytek 2600G (1st revision) with the
same problem.
After upgrading to ADSL2+ I decided to buy a 2800VG because I believe
Draytek build one of the fastest and most reliable routers out there.
I tried all of the available firmware versions (28 – 35) for the
SB3 but no success.
I own 2 other wireless devices using WPA-PSK and they connect to the
2600G\2800VG just fine.
Slim Devices support told me that they do not have a Draytek router
available for testing.
I understand that it would be too expensive to purchase every singe
WIFI router out there,
but it should be possible to get in contact with Draytek support as
they seem very responsive indeed.

[slim] Slim Server / MySQL / WinXP Issues

2006-03-17 Thread aaggarwal01

I made the attempt to migrate to using the MYSQL database since I was
having a number of strange errors with the latest 6.5b1 nightly - they
were recognizing some of my albums, and ocassionally all the songs in

since I have about 15,000 songs, 1000 albums of dilligently ripped FLAC

I have installed MYSQL 5.0, the Perl pieces, and made the requisite
updates per the wiki, and all posts that I could find. Unfortunately

me the following error statements:

[slim] SlimServer fixed my network!

2006-03-17 Thread Jon

I recently upgraded my network to Wireless-G, and ever since I've had
networking problems between my laptop and my network; I could not see
my file/print server from my laptop, could not access any network
resources, etc. I had no problem accessing the internet - just LAN
resources. My wife's laptop, however, had no problems. After weeks of
trying to fix this, I was ready to give up.

I've also had problems with stuttering and hangs from one of my
Squeezeboxes (two others worked fine), and tonight I decided to try to
figure out the stuttering problem. After consulting the SlimServer
wiki on wireless networking, I decided to check what channels my
neighbor's routers were broadcasting on, and discovered about 6
networks (including mine) on Channel 6.

Changing my router to Channel 1 seems to have fixed the problems with
my one Squeezebox - it is well behaved again. Strangely though, as
soon as I made this change to my router, I could see all my network
resources again from my laptop! I can't think of any reason why this
would be ... though I am not going to look a gift-horse in the mouth
...

Assuming that the PC is dedicated to Slimserver and that your music
collection is < 100GB, the PIII HP ePC plus Michael's SlimCD is a much
cheaper option and it runs great.

With some bidding luck on eBay, you can have a running Slimserver PC
for about $100. It does not look as sexy as MAC mini, but you can
easily hide it somewhere in a closet.

Most ePCs are sold with 128MB or 256MB of RAM and, for that reason,
WinXP is not recommended, but SlimCD solves the lack of Linux skills
problem.

Hope it helps with your decision.

[slim] Booting Slimserver in OS X ... from the command line

2006-03-17 Thread trebejo

Hi,

Ok, I figured out that the current setup is broken in a mysterious way
(apparently since the latest upgrade in Tiger 10.4.5), but not in a
hopeless way. I'd been running slimserver smoothly for about six
months, and then yesterday, it wouldn't boot anymore.

Basically, when I click on "Start Server" in the System Preference
pane, nothing happens. No perl, no nuthin'.

BUT if I go to a command line and type in

$
~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/slimserver.pl
--daemon

then good ol' slimserver is back.

Since slim wasn't booting up, I did a thorough wipe and re-install of
6.2.1. Nothing. So I went up to the nightly 6.2.2. Nothing. Then I
started digging around the directories, found a doc meant for linux
users, and used it to come up with the command-line above.

Questions:

1) I switched from linux to macs for the effing gooey, dammit--why
won't it work?

2) How about putting in some debugging info so that when this happens,
the user gets something more useful than a non-response from the
system? I got so much of nothing that I began to suspect (shudder)
Network Issues. I even flirted with re-installing the OS. It's going to
take a bottle of scotch to wipe away this trauma.

3) Should I run some other command in addition to or in place of the
slimserver.pl line above, in order for slimserver to run properly?

Cheers,

Ariel

[slim] Re: After many months of smooth performance, slimserver won't boot

2006-03-17 Thread trebejo

At the moment, I am able to boot by command-line.

This is, like, SOOO undocumented. I had to dig around

~/Library/PreferencePanes/

then down to

~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server

and then run

$
~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/slimserver.pl
--daemon

(that's all on one line in case the forum editor turns it into two).

Sooo undocumented.

So now the server runs. The preference pane that you normally use to
start slimserver (you know, the icon in System Preferences) shows the
server as running and gives me the option to stop it.

I still don't know what is broken, but it's as simple as "clicking on

Just for a lark, I clicked on "Stop Server" and sure enough, it stopped
it. Then I clicked on "Start Server" again (hoping it'd been a bootstrap
hiccup) but no, it still doesn't work.

I don't know if booting up this way neglects some other startup script
that should be running.

These are the things that keep me from giving a squeezebox to my
friends and relatives. My father would disinherit me if I told him to
play his music by just opening up the terminal and typing

$
~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/slimserver.pl
--daemon

Cheers,

Ariel

I mean to-the-day; that includes 2006-002, which was installed on the
14th. I actually don't know whether I tried to start up the slimserver
since that install, but in particular I don't remember trying to do
so.

The 2006-002 update was primarily needed by me to fix rsync, which is
how I back up my hard drives. However, there is a work-around, which is
to install the darwinport of rsync and use it instead. That's what I'd
done.

I'd be all kinds of surprised if the slimserver-os x connection was so
tenuous, and none of them good.

The diagnostics are non-existent, too--there is no obvious place to
find a record of what is going wrong. The install says that it
succeeded, then I click on the start-up button, and nothing happens.

Cheers,

Ariel

Kyle Wrote:
> No, what command would I use?

Kyle,

Firstly, I suggest that you copy all the good directories and files to
their new location.

Then, if you right-click on the directory containing the bad file, have
you got Open followed by CMD shell on the dropdown menu?

1. If so, right-click and left-click on the "CMD shell" option and you
should be in the correct directory.

2. If not, Accessories, CMD prompt will take you to the CMD shell. The
you need to CD (Change Directory) until you find the directory
containing the corrupt file.

When you are in the correct directory, do a dir to examine the contents
of the directory and MAKE sure you see the file you want
to delete is there.

If the contents are too much for a page do "dir | more" to see a page
at a time, hitting the space bar for the next page.

Then, very carefully type "del filename" where filename is the name of
the file you want to remove.

Hope this helps, but be careful.

[slim] Exercise bikes and wireless?

2006-03-17 Thread Mark Lanctot

--

I got an exercise bike today. It's described as a "magnetic" exercise
bike. I suppose this means the resistance is provided by a magnet
acting on a ferrous disc attached to the pedals but I couldn't locate
any technical details.

What to do while exercising - why, listen to the Squeezebox, of course!
:-)

Except I couldn't. The SB kept freezing, stalling, dropping out. In
short it performed the worst it ever had in the 10 minutes I was using
this bike.

When I stopped, everything went back to normal.

So I guess my question is - would there be any way using this bike
would cause EMI? By Faraday's Law, current would be induced in the
disc - it would have to be. Would it then emit EMI?

It's a very cheap bike, so if the more expensive ones have any sort of
shielding this one does not have it...

Hopefully no one thinks I'm a quack for asking, but the effect is
dramatic and repeatable.

[slim] Re: itunes alternatives

2006-03-17 Thread m1abrams

I use jriver Media Center. They have a 30day trial and the cost of the
product is $40.

Pretty nice product I tested it against Media Monkey and Foobar2000.

Foobar2000 is a great product I love the amount you can customise it,
however you really have to spend a great deal of time with foobar2000
to make it sing like you want. Also the foo_pod plugin for it that
makes it work with the ipod lacks some features that I would want
(maybe the author will add them soon). It lacks albumart, rating and
playcount sync. The last two being the biggest for me.

Media Monkey I did like a good bit and was cheaper than jriver, however
jriver appeared to be a more polished product and jriver allows for
more customization. Jrivers smartlists is just so much better than any
of the competition.

Now a note, jriver and media monkey do not support smartplaylists ON
the ipod like iTunes does. This means that if you create a smartlist
in jriver it will SYNC the contents of the list but the list will NOT
be dynmanic on the iPod. The best example is a playlist of UNHEARD
Podcasts. When I sync this list I have 4 unheard podcasts when I
listen to the 1 of the podcasts on my iPod the list does not update
with that removed. The only 3rd party app I could find that does
support smartplaylists is foo_pod, however since it does not support
ratings and placount syncing it almosts seems pointless to me.

2006-03-17 Thread aubuti

A lot of us have slimserver running happily on a NAS. I use a Buffalo
LinkStation HD-HG250. It has 128MB RAM and a 266MHz PowerPC processor
(forget the model number). It does fine serving up my 3k or so track
music collection, and I expect it would do fine with a collection of
10k tracks.

It has a fan and it's not silent. It's not really loud, either, but I
don't need it within easy reach, so I just keep it in the basement.
There are hacks/tweaks to reduce fan noise, but not eliminate it.

It's perfect for my needs, but you might want something quieter.

I used to use J.River Media Center and have found it pretty usable. It
does support iPod and all the music formats you were asking about. It
is pretty fast and the ability to customize the front end and song
management is amazing. I do use iTunes as I use a Mac now, although it
is a decent product, at times it can be slow as hell.

Unfortunately the product tends to be on the expensive side, I think
they include a 30 day trial, give it a whirl.

Sorry I am coming from a industry background not a music background on

Yes with music you can usually get a replacement at some cost. (I do
have CDs I have lost that are virtually unreplacable). However photos
of your childs first step, what is the price of that?

And the example of nuke inside DC, well yea that is silly to protect

[slim] SB3 with NAS Server

2006-03-17 Thread JMan

Hi there!
I intend to buy one of those sexy Squeezeboxes. I'd like to run it on a
NAS server. In the forum I mainly read about users having troubles
getting the Box running on a NAS.

Does anybody has it happily working with a NAS? I have a big music
collection, about 10K songs. How much RAM is required? Furthermore the
NAS should be handy (not a rack) and silent, preferrably without a
fan.

Any recommendations?
Thanks a lot!

I didn't know about the numeric entry thing, but is there a reason why
you're using such a weak WPA key? Twelve characters would be trivial
to crack.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.

Whilst I have a (nearly) full back up of my lossless collection (18GB of
Mozart wouldn't fit on the 500GB drive) I need to back up my lossy
collection, plus DR backups for the rest of my systems.

As for the inevitable, it's exceedingly common for >1 drives to fail in
a RAID5 system because the stress of rebuilding the array following a
failure often causes one or more of the the other drives to fail too.

I don't worry about whether my discs will fail or not - they will, it's
just a matter of time.

I believe if the whole key is numeric, the SB firmware will assume
you're typing in a number instead of a string.

It's more a user interface thing than a bug, and I don't know of any
clean way to do it. (Since you may actually -want- to enter a big hex
number as your key, is the 'bug' in the SB for letting you? Or is it
in your other hardware for insisting it's ASCII?)

Prior to making any backup I run MP3Test against the source data. My

A bit of an odd one - i don't know if it's a bug or not.  I set up WPA-PSK on my Netgear router with a 12 digit numerical key.  This worked fine on my XP laptop and on the Nokia 770 but my SB2 will not play ball - it gets as far as DHPC but takes a bizarre IP address on a completely different subnet which of course means it can't connect with my server.  Adding a single non-numerical character and it's fine.  Is this the SB2 thats out of spec or are the other devices overly flexible in what they'll allow?

While its not possible to know the exact cause without the router
and/or driver source, a likely cause is a simple memory leak by in the
encryption code. The router's memory is being consumed and not freed,
hence the crash/hang. There can also be dangling references, unset
variables, etc. in either the driver or router. Since Windows is not
crashing on you, its likely in the router vs. the driver.

Don't go there. Get a new router and stop wasting your time with what
you have now. While the Belkin Pre-N is a very good router, one cannot
say the same for many other Belkin models. In all, Belkin has a
terrible track record of resolving their networking problems, or
putting much $$$ into maintenance. I have a Pre-N which I love, but
would likely not purchase another Belkin product for the aforementioned
reason.

No, you're not going to find a problem outside your router - its the
router causing the problem. You already have two test cases using
different protocols (Slim, Windows) that trigger the problem, and one
test case that indicates it only occurs with WEP enabled. Belkin
probably has not dealt with this issue, and likely never will, as WEP
is so trivial to break, nobody should be using it, including yourself.
Move on!

contradictory advice it is a nightmare!

Regarding your idea of why the router might be failing, that is an
interesting thought. I have upgraded the firmware to the latest level
without any effect though, so is there anything else I could do to
trace this problem? I am using a manually set 10 digit hex key as I

anything? Afraid I don't really understand the details behind how
encryption works!!

[slim] Re: Wireless Problems

2006-03-17 Thread snarlydwarf

Well, if you want security, WEP won't give it to you. Nor will MAC
filtering (though at least with MAC filtering, someone will have to
hope you have the machine with the hijacked MAC turned off or they'll
have problems).

WEP is trivial to break in a minute, regardless of the length of your
passkey. (A design flaw in the way the encryption works.)

Since your router is broken to the point of not letting two PC's share
files reliably... and since you want encryption...

Maybe it's time to get a new router?

WPA hasn't been broken yet.

As for why your existing router gets whiney about WEP: my guess is that
their is a counter somewhere and when it cycles it should negotiate a
new key... but it doesn't. It may be fixable with new firmware, but...
WEP is still breakable.

It really is both an emotional and an engineering question.
Economics play a big part of the decision process.
This is true of any backup situation.

If you have the need, you have to have two physical locations
preferably a thousand or more miles apart.

I have a bit over 700 CDs. at $10 a piece, that is $7,000
worth of music. So if it all was destroyed, I have to look at
$7000 plus time to re-rip. There is no way I'm going to spend
$25,000 on a backup strategy for $7000 worth of music.

I live "inside the Beltway" in the Washington DC area. If the
Russians drop a nuke on the Pentagon, my house will be vaporized.
If that happens, all my music is gone. But I don't worry about
that, because if I'm home at the time, I've got other problems.
Or maybe no more problems ever.

If I really cared, I bet that there is some SqueezeBox
owner in Europe that would be willing to hold a 400GB disk for me
while I did the same for them. Access could be instant over the
'net, or via DHL in a couple of days. You can get about
anything you want to pay for.

Curious.

With these Qnaps, is it just a case of using a pc to transfer music
across to it, then when all the music is on, just have a wired sb3
connected to it? So it would be qnap>sb3>dac>speakers ?

[slim] Wireless Problems

2006-03-17 Thread mwoodroof

Hi again, I have finally found a workaround for my problem described in
this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21866.

To summarise: after about 200Mb streaming (half hour of FLACs a few
hours of MP3s) the SB3 stops, seems to lose the network conection, and
I have to turn the router off and on again to get the network back. I
think it is a router problem (I have the same problem copying large
files over the wireless network, using Windows XP).

I have now worked out that if I switch WEP encryption off, the problem
goes away and I can stream FLACs for hours on end no problem. This is
rather frustrating, as I don't really want to run my wireless LAN
unencrypted. And it just seems quite bizarre! Does anyone have any idea
why encryption could be causing this problem?

One option I have considered is using MAC filtering instead of
encryption - can anyone enlighten me as to how secure that would be?

Final question - have asked this before but got no help :-(
In order to try to understand what is happening when the SB3 stops
playing with encryption on, is there any value in looking at the
debugging in slimserver? If so, can anyone describe to me what I should
be looking at/for? I know you can turn on various options in "server
settings/debugging" in slimserver but don't know what to look for - it
is a very long and confusing list!

Any advice much appreciated! Thanks a lot!!!

That's nice and thorough.

I'm not quite there yet. I've currently got:

1. Original CDs in storage. Well, for *most* of my collection ;)
2. Ripped music on RAID5 drive (linux software RAID). Server on UPS.
3. Copy of music on 500GB drive in Xbox offsite.

I really must get round to either burning to DVD-R or 15GB DLTs before
the inevitable happens.

I think the sacrificed goat may be getting me somewhere ..

It would seem that the tracks that are not appearing are the ones with
no Album specified, can it be that these are being grouped as a
compilation, and then not shown in my compilation directory as the name
is blank?

Also .. In my earlier ID3v2.4 conversions I managed to somehow set the
Compilation tag on some files .. is their an easy way to clear it as
Mp3Tag does not seem to show it.

Any answers appreciated as the goat supply is dwindling

[slim] Re: Missing MP3 Artists

2006-03-17 Thread Dave Bird

I've spent most of today trying to find out what is going wrong and i'm
getting to the point where my squeezebox and all associated software is
likely to be launched through through a window ... however some more
data ...

My library has a lot of individual music files (2000+), not parts of
albums, and stored in a directory named as their first letter. They are
a mixture of mp3 and wma. There are also a number of albums (mp3, wma,
and flac) stored in artist/album sub directories of these directories.
There are no problems with any of the album directories.

What I find is that a number of the files do not appear under Artists
in the music library after a full scan. If I do a Browse Albums then
then they do appear in All Songs. I have checked the tags with Mp3Tag
(plus several other tools) made sure they are ID3v2.3 (for mp3s) and
all looks ok. With d_scan set the tracks appear on the file list with
no errors reported.

other oddities ..

After 8 full rescans one of the tracks, which had not been edited
during that time, decided to appear in the Artist List. At the time it
appeared I had just modified the title of an un-related track. This was
not to last though as it dissapeared again after the next full rescan
and has not been seen since!

I have tried completely un-installing and re-installing, standing on my
head while hitting the enter key, and sacrificing a goat .. all to no
avail ..

Anyone any thoughts ?

[slim] After many months of smooth performance, slimserver won't boot

2006-03-17 Thread trebejo

I've been having one of those "inexplicable" problems and when I came by
here I noticed that there's a bit of this going around. I'm starting to
wonder if the latest Apple Tiger upgrade didn't break something (which
is what happened to rsync a couple of weeks ago).

Basically, I've been using slimserver on a mac since last June, and
yesterday I could not boot slimserver. I tried to find some networking
problem, but no dice.

I tried reinstalling but that doesn't help either. I can't even build
the directory ~/Library/Caches/SlimServer (or was it Slimdevices? I
can't remember but it's the one that contains the database). The usual
perl command never shows up on ps.

To debug the network, I first established a connection to slimnetworks,
and got some bubbles and river sounds through. So the box is not totally
fried.

The network is a mini with ethernet at 192.168.0.101, airport at
192.168.0.100, di-524 router at 192.168.0.1, and SB2 at 192.168.0.102
all courtesy of dhcp. The firewall is set up as it always was with tcp
and udp clear on 3483 and 9000. You know, the usual working rig.

I tried quirky stuff like rebooting, unplugging router and squeezebox,
holding down the "Add" button, etc. I even turned off the firewall but
didn't get a reaction that way either.

I can ping and traceroute to the squeezebox without a problem. I just
can't get the bloody perl line started, or if I can, it dies awfully
quick.

Lest we suspect the perl command itself too quickly, its creation date
is August 2005. It's been around.

Oh before I forget, the rest of the network seems to be going as
before. I can do iTunes, downloads, mail, web, etc. It's just the
squeezebox that has gone partially bonkers; but its ability to get to
Squeezenetworks tells me that the router/cable modem series is
functional enough.

I didn't drop a beer on the squeezebox, either. It's just been sitting
in its usual well-ventilated spot, gathering a little dust but
otherwise pampered.

For starters, I'd appreciate being told if I am missing anything from a
standard slimserver 6.2.1 or 6.2.2 install. All I can find right now
after my latest attempt to install 6.2.2 are

~/Library/Preferences/com.slimdevices.slim.plist

which is a 4 kb file of the plist kind and

~/Library/PerferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane

which is a directory with these stats:

$ ls -lR ~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/ | wc
3334 21644 181974
$ du -sh ~/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/
27M

In other words, around 3300 files with a total size of about 27 mb.

Cheers,

Ariel

I downloaded SyncToy and played around with it last night. It seems to
work fine with a GUI, so it's much easier for me. It also moves deleted
files to the trashcan, so you can retreive them if you lose something

You could also consider a genuine mac mini as they are now also intel
based. Not sure if anyone has installed linux on one tho. They have
intel centrino duo's in them and the cheapest one is £499. So about the
same price as your aopen.

[slim] Re: How do YOU backup your music?

2006-03-17 Thread jeffmeh

No, briefcase does not update upon startup, or even automatically,
unless you set it up to do so.

You are correct that if I lose a source file and then update the
briefcase, then the update will delete the associated file in the
briefcase. However, I initiate the update myself, and the update
process also tells me everything it is going to do and asks me whether
I wish to continue. If I see that it intends to delete a file, I can
decide whether that is consistent with my expectations and either
continue or bail out. In my view, that gives me enough of a margin of
error.

I also find the synchronization very helpful, particularly when I am
renaming and reorganizing files, as those changes are reflected in the
briefcase upon update. But you seem to be looking for a simple
automated copy function. Just pick one of the suggestions and try it
out.

By the way, many of the tools people are citing would work the same way
as briefcase if you set them up to "mirror" or "synchronize." Some
people have said they do this with automated scripts, which I think is
pretty risky for just the reason you cited.

My music sits on an Infrant NAS in RAID 0, so I already have a
"mirroring" solution which will protect me from a disk failure. I set
up the briefcase on another disk on the network, and I am very careful
when I update it. This provides some additional protection from bugs,
viruses, and my own stupidity, unless that stupidity includes updating
the briefcase without being careful, as you have pointed out.

Every backup scheme has to deal with this in one way or another. Even
if you keep many generations of full backups, you can still get into a
situation where a problem was introduced 5 days ago, you did not catch
it until today, but you did a significant amount of work yesterday. If
you restore the backup from before the problem you no longer have the
problem, but you lose all the work you did yesterday. If you stay
where you are and do not restore a backup, you do not have to repeat
yesterday's work, but you do have to figure out how to fix the problem
some other way. Either approach can be the better one, depending upon
the specifics of the circumstances.

I am in no way saying that briefcase is a great tool for backups,
merely that if you are on Windows you already have it, and that what it
provides it provides pretty well. YMMV

I use a Mac Mini + external 320G LaCie drive for Slimserver and it
works great - I have 3 SBs in other rooms with 2 connected wirelessly
and 1 wired.

I used iTunes to rip my CDs to Apple Lossless.

I use a wireless router for connectivity between the Mac Mini and SBs
and the router assigns IP addresses to each device using DHCP.

If you want to connect the SB directly to the Mac Mini, I think you
will need to configure IP addresses manually - however it makes sense
for the Mac to be connected to a router with internet connectivity as
you will need this when ripping CDs - unless you want to type in all of
the CD track information manually.

To get back to the ethernet (wired) set up options, use the left arrow
key until the menus won't go back any further, and then scroll down.
You should then see the option to set up a wired connection, go right,
and all the options should be there by scrolling down. If not, what
are the options available to you in your top level networking menu ?

With your wired connection, I'm a bit confused at which stage you are
stuck at. Can the Squeezebox see the SSID of your wireless network and
just won't connect to it, or can it not even see the network at all ?

If the former, it's more likely to be a firewall, router or permissions
issue - if the latter, it's more likely to be that your wireless network
itself isn't set up right.

Let us know and we'll do what we can.

P.S. Is your router listed as one which is known to work with the
Squeezebox in the router status pages ?

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?RouterStatus

P.P.S. Have you tried rebooting the router - that may help with the
"ethernet appears to be disconnected" problem.

[slim] SB3 can't open m4a file, mp3 will work

2006-03-17 Thread drhanso

Hi,

there is an unusual message on my SB3 since yesterday:

'Problem: File can't be opened'

I've downloaded unprotected mp4s and unlike all other MP3/MP4 before
they can't be played through SB3 (in iTunes and Quicktime they play
ok), it will display a message like 'Problem: File can't be opened'.
I've tried with several SlimServers (osx and xp) and it does not make a
difference.
If I convert those files to MP3 then they work fine (same directory,
same permissions). All other unprotected MP4 work.

Are there special MP4s that SlimServer can't handle? Where can I find
an error log of this? I'm using the Mar16 nightly 6.2.2

-Hans

[slim] Re: Cannot connect a new squeezebox

2006-03-17 Thread oktup

I got my SB3 a few days and also had problems connected to slimserver.
Don't know if this will help your particular case, but it might help
someone in the future, so I'll post it anyway.

Symptoms - SB3 seemed to set itself up fine both via ethernet and
wirelessly. It obtained a proper IP address. I could ping it from my
Slimserver PC. But it wouldn't link up - it just hung on 'Connecting to
Slimserver'. From the router lights I could see that it was talking to
the Slimserver PC (and slim.exe was using increased CPU time) but it
just wouldn't connect. Strangely, it connected to Squeezenetwork quite
happily.

I tried every combination of everything I could think of, turned off
all encryption, deactivated my PC's firewall, my router's firewall,
etc. Still nothing. Searched the forums for any clues. Was tearing my
hair out.

About 5 torturous hours later, I stumbled across a post by (IIRC)
Michael Herger where he mentioned the 'blocking' control on Slimserver.
I'd installed SS on my new server a couple of months ago, well before
the arrival of my SB3, and being the sort who verges on paranoia over
such matters, had enabled the 'block access except for these IPs'
setting. *Of course, I'd completely forgotten to go back in and add the
IP address my new SB3 was now occupying.* Which is presumably why
SlimServer was ignoring my SB3's repeated plaintive entreaties to
connect. Oh, how I laughed hysterically!

In hindsight, it wasn't such a bad thing, because I underwent a crash
course in wireless networking (first time I'd tried it) and configuring
my router - irrelevant as it all turned out to be, it was good to learn
a bit about such things. However, given this is a rather elementary yet
maddening mistake, I wonder if it might be worth including in the SS
FAQ, or something? I suppose I should add it to the Wiki myself. Has
anyone contemplated doing some kind of 'Troubleshooting wizard' for all
this sort of stuff?

(PS - thanks Michael, you saved my sanity that night ;)

Yes - should be something like:

Robocopy /E /IT

so long as you don't use the /MIR or /PURGE options Robocopy won't
delete files from the backup.

Robocopy is your friend!! Probably the best freeby from M$ - don't
know why they have'nt put it in the base OS yet.

NO! Correct me if i am wrong, but if you lost some of your master files
and the briefcase gets updated it will delete the copies in the
briefcase! And i think briefcase updates on start up. So, you lose your
files somehow and then your PC reboots. Boom, back up gone :(

Briefcase is a synchronization solution for working documents, not a
backup solution.

Right, this is starting to do my head in now. I just can't find the
solution that is _just_ right for me. But i think with a bit of playing
around, Robocopy will do what i want.

What i want is this;
Automated copying of new/modified files to my second HDD. If i delete
my master files, i dont want my backup files deleted. However, i do
want my _modified_ files copying over. Can robocopy do this?

I have been in contact with Qnap since last Saturday to try and get the
easiest resolution to this problem.

They are sending over today a firmware update for testing with the
drives we have used. Once I have tested it and made sure it is ok I
will be making it available to our customers.

The firmware update will fix the following:

1. Improve network file transfer performance
2. Fix HD compatible issue
3. Fix multimedia performance issue
4. Fix some torrent files that can't be used in TS-101

Hopefully we are nearly there.

[slim] Cannot connect a new squeezebox

2006-03-17 Thread simonjkendrew

I have just purchased a wireless squeezebox 3 and I am having real
problems in connecting it via ethernet and wireless.

I have a 10mbps D-Link ethernet card for my wired connection, and my
wireless setup is a Zoom X6 5590 wireless modem router, with a zoom USB
adapter on my PC, 802.11g network.

I cannot get either the wired or wireless squeeze options to connect,
and now after having initially setup the ethernet options, I get an
error message saying 'error: ethernet appears disconnected' when trying
to setup a wired network. The network cables are attached and I know
they work because I have tried them with other devices. I seem to be
unable to re-enter the ethernet setup options, where I can specify IP
addresses, etc. Reseting to the factory default settings by holding
down 'add' whilst powering on the squeezebox does reset the wireless
options, but does not seem to reset the ethernet setup procedure.

I have set up the correct firewall exceptions, and I have also tried
totally disabling my firewall, uninstalling norton anti-virus and also
removing all excryption from my wireless network, but still no luck.
The details in the manual seem a little vague.

I spent 5 hours yesterday trying to setup the squeezebox, which really
seems a long time for such a device. Could anyone please advise me of
the correct procedure in order to get my squeezebox working.

Regards

Simon

Well said! In any event, a computer free/NAS setup with a squeezebox is
a subject that often crops up for obvious reasons. The Qnap, I assume,
is one of the first attempts to tackle an out-of-the box product and I
imagine there are a lot of squeezebox users out there interested in how
it pans out.

The number of visitors to the threads clearly justifies their
existence...

[slim] Missing MP3 Artists

2006-03-17 Thread Dave Bird

Can anyone help ...

I have just been going through the exercise of stripping ID3v1 Tags
from my MP3 files (with ID3-TagIT 3) and updating them to ID3v2.4,
which having read some threads on how to handle Compilations and Multi
Discs, would seem to be the thing to do. However, its giving me some
problems:

Following a clear and rescan, the mp3 tracks that have no album
specified do not appear under Artists in the browser (or on
SoftSqueeze). If I go to Browse Albums - All Songs, or No Album
the tracks do appear. WMA files appear ok. The Tags all look ok, if I
browse music folder and look at the tracks the tags are reported
correctly at V2.4, Winamp shows them correctly to. A dump of the MP3
shows that the Artist is in tag TPE1.

I am running the nightly 6.2.2 from the 16th March, Windows XP Home,
default2 skin (same result with fishbone).

Thanks

Dave

Two threads hardly constitute a Qnap forum! The threads are
appropriately titled (so it's very easy for the uninterested to avoid)
and they relate specifically to the Slimsever/Qnap package as marketed
by Progressive AV, so are not OT. There are many threads here which
don't interest me. My simple solution is not to read them.

[slim] Question about "New Posts" in forums

2006-03-17 Thread aubuti

This question is not about SB or SS, but about how the forums software
operates.

I've recently taken to reading through the forums using "New Posts",
which seems much more efficient than going back and forth into the
various forums (Beginners, General Discussion, etc.). At what point
does a "New Post" cease being new?

Perhaps more to the point, why do posts apparently disappear from "New
Posts" AND switch their icons to indicate that I've seen the thread,
when I haven't? I can understand there being a time or space limit on
"New", but I would have expected unread threads to continue to appear
unread

If there's a readme somewhere just point me to it. Thanks.
