I've only installed 6.5 as either the .deb or run as 'me' from my own
shell. (not with a script, just ./slimserver.pl in a screen session so
I could play with it.)

Did you install from an RPM or the tarball?

How are you starting the server?

Is it possible to sync the settings of two SB3? It's tedious to copy the

Your database is not writeable for some reason: are you running
slimserver as its own user (highly recommended and the default I
think)?

If so, make sure it can write to places it needs to write... The
sqllite file and the preferences file:

Assuming the user is 'slimserv':

chown slimserv /etc/slimserver.conf

I have no idea where your sql file is, though, been a while since I
used it. You should make it (and the directory it is in) writeable by
the right user.

[slim] Double Counting of songs

2006-05-02 Thread dag2000

Slimserver is double counting my songs. I have approx. 4,000 songs, but
8,000 show up on the statistics in Slimserver. I suppose I know why
this is happening, but not how to correct it.

Right now, Slimserver is counting each song by two locations. The first
location is what I'll term (probably incorrectly) the virtual address:
\\Newdesktop\shareddocs\My Music\Elvis Costello\Brutal Youth\Elvis
Costello-Brutal Youth-03-13 Steps Lead Down.mp3

The second location is, then, what I'll call the physical address:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\Elvis
Costello\Brutal Youth\Elvis Costello-Brutal Youth-03-13 Steps Lead
Down.mp3

Obviously, these are two ways of pointing to the same location. Could
someone please tell me how to rid myself of these doubles?

Thanks very much.

Then I held the brightness button (although nothing prompted me to do

Your firmware should automatically have downgraded when you went back to
6.2.1.

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PlayerFirmware

Check SlimServer - Player Settings, bottom of the page. 6.2.2 has
firmware 48. 6.2.1 has firmware 28.

On the player, you can check Settings - Information - Player
Information, scroll down twice.

I'm sorry, but this is silly. There's a difference between "moveable"
and "portable". A cellphone is portable, it's DESIGNED to be moved
around, it has batteries and requires no connections. Likewise an iPod,
or a walkman, or a camera. These devices, of course, are designed to be
resiliant to the usual kind of abuse they get being carted around in
people's pockets (although whether you're going to get much joy from
the warranty if you break it is another story).

On the other hand, many devices, whilst small enough to be moveable are
not designed to be operated while in motion or moved frequently or
carelessly. Examples - a small TV, a regular corded telephone, a clock
radio, a blender. These items's don't have batteries, do require cables
to be connected and do not pass drop tests. The SB3, whatever you feel
it may look like, fits into the latter category. The fact that it
happens to share a couple of design elements with an iPod (curves?
shiny plastic front?) doesn't change that.

> said? Buy an iPod!
If you want something portable, that's excellent advice.

2006-05-02 Thread JPT-L

"Do you have any recursive network shortcuts? Any long playlists,
recursive playlists or playlists with deleted/obsolete items?"
Mark, thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
You'll have to put that in layman's terms. I'm not sure what you mean
by 'recursive network shortcuts'.
At this time, I am solely using SlimServer to stream one internet radio
station at 128k, so I'm not playing any iTunes playlists for instance. I
did set up the playlist (the 'SqueezeBox' side of the window as a
repetitive URL as follows:

(REPEAT - ALL)

(#3 - 583/12003) Radio Paradise - DJ-mixed modern & classic rock,
world, electronica & more - info: radioparadise.com
(#3 - 583/12003) Radio Paradise - DJ-mixed modern & classic rock,
world, electronica & more - info: radioparadise.com
(#3 - 583/12003) Radio Paradise - DJ-mixed modern & classic rock,

(#3 - 583/12003) Radio Paradise - DJ-mixed modern & classic rock,
world, electronica & more - info: radioparadise.com
(#4 - 1510/11828) Radio Paradise - DJ-mixed modern & classic
rock, world, electronica & more - info: radioparadise.com

By recursive, if you mean redundant or repetitive, I've certainly done
that as it relates to the stream URLs. Also, the last URL is different
that the others, however it is an active URL as of this post.
Even though this is the playlist that I've used for the last few months
without problems up until now, could this setup be giving me problems?
For now, I'll try just one known active URL on REPEAT - ALL and see if
that makes a difference.
Thanks again for your reply.

Probably not. NAS devices aren't designed to have 3rd party software
loaded onto them.

In order to do this, the device:

- needs to be running Linux
- needs to have 3rd party Linux firmware available for it
- needs to be able to have a telnet session opened on it
- needs sufficient CPU/RAM/ROM

That eliminates 95% of the NAS devices you'll find out there. Your
choices are essentially those already outlined in this thread.

the machine that uses my SB2 as a bridge.

I use FileZilla to FTP files up from a Debian-based server through my
SB2 to a Windows XP upstairs and the copy is usually no problem, but
since the upgrade I haven't been able to FTP a 236MB file.

The transfer starts OK (>700KB/s) but after 30 seconds or so the
transfer seems to stall and the transfer rate drops to ~1KB/s,
triggering retries and eventually a complete failure.

Strangely enough the copy worked fine using a Samba drive mounted
across the WLAN.

Has anyone else seen a similar problem?

Wireless signal strength is showing at 36% which is quite low (possibly
due to weather conditions), but I wouldn't have thought this would cause
any major problems.

[slim] New Music & Bitrate

2006-05-02 Thread Arie

Hi,

I have two (hopefully) simple questions.
When I show Bitrate on my SB for 320, the format is 32. Is it
possible to limit this to 320?
In New Music the album is show first. I would like to see the artist
first, and then the album. Is this easy to change?

Thanx

[slim] Re: Slimserver No Album No Artist

2006-05-02 Thread jimbres

Well, I "solved" my problem. I do my ripping on a Windows XP box & then
copy the MP3s to my Linux box. Most of the time, I do this over my
network; I open a Nautilus file brower, navigate to the Windows folder
where the newly ripped MP3s reside & then copy them to the Linux Music
folder.

But I didn't do this with the MP3s that were causing problems. Instead,
I used a USB thumbdrive to copy them from the WinXP box to the Linux
box.

Today, I deleted the problematic MP3s from the Linux folder & copied
fresh copies over the network. Then I rescanned the library & all was
well with the world.

Don't know why this mattered but it did. Keep in mind that I'm new to
both Squeezebox & Linux.

[slim] Re: Slimserver No Album No Artist

2006-05-02 Thread Scallywagfr78

Coming to your points: my lyrics are in French and Spanish, have been
imported via Notepad trough iTunes v6.0.1.5 into Slim. I am unable to
say whether that means Unicode Utf etc. MP3Tag Studio 3.05 identifies
the tags as ID3v2.
One question: whether synced or not, the lyrics don't show as such on
the Slimserver Fileinfo page in any way other than "Lyrics: eng" or
"Lyrics: (and lots of funny caracters)". I have tried in English, but
nothing shows.
Any clues?

[slim] Network Drive Doesn't Work With Slim Server

2006-05-02 Thread jameswendt

I keep my MP3 collection in a folder on a valid mapped network drive.

The drive is "O:" and the folder is "\music".

When I enter O:\Music as my music folder, I get the following error
message:

New value for Music Folder rejected:

Oops - "o:\music" doesn't seem to be a valid directory. Try again.

The information then reverts back to the default.

The drive letter and the folder are 100% correct and fully accessible
to me in every other way.

Any thoughts?

[slim] Re: SlimServer Stops

2006-05-02 Thread saday

Hi

Same again - I upgraded to 6.2.2 the other day, SB3 then upgraded
firmware to 48, tried to play something - SB3 tried to connect and then
shut off. Checked SlimServer, it was not running, so started it. Tried
to play something, same thing again. Restarted SS and tried to play
via the web interface, same thing.

SS would stay running until I tried to play something, which simply
caused SS to stop.

Tried rebooting etc to no avail, so re-installed 6.2.1, which has been
running for months, and all was well again - music ! SB3 is still
running FW 48 so it's SS 6.2.2 which is the problem.

My hardware has not changed in as many (more in fact) months and it's
running Windows Server 2003 SP1. Wireless LAN (80% signal), router is
a Netgear WGT624 v3 (with fast mode disabled).

Seems to be a lot of posts on this subject

[slim] Slimserver/Softsqueeze and FLAC files

2006-05-02 Thread pc4ever1

I'm trying to configure FLAC files to run on Slimserver. I'm using
slimserver on my WinXP pc at home and then access it via softsqueeze
and openssh at work.

The mp3 files run without any problems ( I had to change the
Softsqueeze player at my work to a bitrate of 96Kbps to ensure a
continous music stream ). However my library also contains FLAC files.
When I play these they become interrupted/choppy. I don't believe
there are settings to change the bitrate for the FLAC files so I did
some checking in the Server / File Formats section to see if FLAC was
enabled. It was for my SB3 but while at work I want to stream my FLAC
files from the Softsqueeze player.

To enable this I believe I had to select FLAC / MP3.
When I did the above I get the following error in SlimServer.
"Required binary was not found: [flac] -dcs --skip=$START$
--until=$END$ -- $FILE$ | [lame] --resample 44100 --silent -q $QUALITY$
--abr $BITRATE$ - -"

So after getting this error I thought that my server didn't have the
correct files to run the FLAC files from the server. I downloaded the
latest LAME files and placed then in the Slim Server directory. But
this error still happens.

Is there a posted file/FAQ somewhere as to how to configure the FLAC
LAME files on a Softsqueeze player being driven from my Slim Server?

TIA

I believe the "By City" menu is only under the Slim Devices Picks on

there are several Capital FM streams listed: Capital Disney, Capital FM
Top 40, Capital FM Classical, and Capital Gold Oldies. I can't verify
that they are functioning now because my SB isn't nearby, and
softsqueeze doesn't do the transcoding, but give it a shot.

I can vouch for your problem, I was trying Capital via the tune in

after I found this thread that I found out how to do it via

Well, to add to this train of thought, Squeeze has done a great job of
being a niche product, but to bust out to the mainstream the price will
have to come down. Wi-fi appliances like the SB3 don't cost $300, they
cost $150, $200 at most. I've showed my SB2 off to several friends who
were very interested in the device until they found out what the cost
was. You'd really think with direct sales they could sell for less and
still make a good profit (while possibly increasing their volume).

Then again, maybe that's not the goal, maybe they would like to sell
more to the Niche crowd.

[slim] Tuning Capital FM (London)

2006-05-02 Thread twynne

(had this posted in another thread regarding use in the UK, but thought
best to break it out separately as the topic varies slightly...)

I've been trying to get Capital FM streaming via my Slimp3 and/or SB3.
I've only been testing with the Slim (as it's closest to me at the
moment), but can't quite seem to get it working. The URL I've been
using is:

http://audio3.musicradio.com/capitalsuperhi

When I try to tune this in, I get 'WMA Convert error - check file
types' displayed on the Slim.

Is this an issue particular to the slim, or do I have something
configured incorrectly? I was under the impression it's possible to
transcode radio stations, so if transcoding to MP3 anyway I can't see
why it wouldn't work on the Slim. If I need to change convert.conf, can
anyone offer any pointers?

In the other thread someone had mentioned going to Internet Radio >
Slim Devices Pics > By City > London, but I don't have the 'By City'
menu... mine goes straight to the list of Slim Devices picks... and I
can't see any way to enable/change it.

Thanks,

Tom

[slim] Is there an easy way to run SlimServer on a Networked Hard Drive (with pc off) ?

songs will get stuck and the display/graph on the squuezbox with
freeze. Usually starts to play again after 30+ seconds.
I never had any of these problems in the past. I'm using 6.2.1
firmware 15.

[slim] Re: Buffer drained, pausing playback

2006-05-02 Thread Triode

Just uploaded a newer version of NetTest to the same forum location:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=66366&postcount=37

I don't expect to see a change in results here, but it is worthwhile
you using the lastest one just to be sure.

[Details of the change: in the old version, if the server computer is
doing something else, the NetTest plugin could store up a set of
packets to send. These could cause it to think the connection is
congested and hence record drops. The new version suppresses busts of
test packets if the server computer is running slow. This actually
means the rate generated on the network can be slightly low, but avoids
recording low values due to the server doing other things. All an
artifact that the server was never really designed to do this sort of
thing...]

I've seen a fair number of people reporting this issue with 6.2.2 and
firmware 48.

If you're seeing this, tell me if you have in your Slimserver player
settings 'Fade in and out'. Does the problem go away if you switch that
back to 'none'?

There is definitely a bug there that someone pointed out to me. I'm trying
to figure out if there are more bugs causing the same symptom, or just that
one.

Please let me know.

Quick point - which version of NetTest are you using? (the one posted
on the forum?)

Reason for asking is that I did change one thing in it between the one
posted to the forum and the one included as part of the 6.5 beta. I
think the early version (forum post) would record a reduced rate if the
server instantaneously ran slow. The one in 6.5 does not (it over
reads in these conditions.) Let me look at it and see...

Good idea Stuart. Gets my vote. Perhaps it should be a generic 'NAS as

[slim] SlimServer stopping & CPU maxing out..HELP!

2006-05-02 Thread JPT-L

After having stable, continuous operation of the SlimServer (previous
version), it's now stopping after a few hours. Here are the details:
Running Windows XP
Running SServer 6.2.2; configured to start automatically
Wireless network uses Linksys Wireless-B BEFW11S4
Using Linksys media player WMLS-11b that is configured to play SServer
as a 'favorite'.
SServer comes up as http://localhost:9000/
Recent changes to my system:
Upgraded to 1g ram

Prior to my ram upgrade, prior version of SServer would start and run
continuously without any interruptions. I'd get an occasional drop or
gap thru my media player, but I'm attributing that to the network
and/or the player. SServer stayed on for days w/no problems.
After my ram upgrade (I'm guessing coincidentally), I notice SServer
would shutdown. When I would click the icon in the system tray
("SServer Stopped") and click "start", it would attempt load IE, but
I'd get "page not available".
I also noticed that at this point my CPU usage was a solid 100% and
everything was running very slowly. It's as though SServer was 'loading
up' and not 'dumping' or 'recycling' data, or resources (I know that
these aren't the correct terms, & I'm no computer guy...).
The reason that I say this, is that after stopping SServer and stopping
the process in Task Manager (55,764k mem. usage) my computer went back
to normal & my CPU usage went back to 5 - 15%.
After trying to restart SServer, I'd get the 'connecting' or 'starting'
flashing icon, but it would never connect (page unavail).
I decided to update SS version to 6.2.2. It seemed to improve in that
it didn't shut down as soon. But today, it shut down again & my CPU
usage was at 100%. I closed SS, and ended the process, and my CPU went
back to the norm...5%+/-.
Also, after restarting SS, it now does load up on IE, so it looks like
it will restart without a problemI'm just confident that it will
shut down eventually, and my CPU will be maxed out as a result, once
again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
J.P.

[slim] Qnap TS-101

2006-05-02 Thread Stuart

Firstly I'd like to say hi to everyone - been browsing the forums for
quite a while now and finally decidedd to come out of my shell and join
in.

I bought the Qnap and Squeezebox combination back in January (ok I
didn't actually get them until end of March, but hey, they're coming
form a long way-a-way and are out of Paul's control - lets not get
started on that one again!) Since getting them I can honestly say that
they are brilliant, I had to update the initial firmware to get over
the hanging when transferring files and had a email chat with Paul a
couple of weeks back because the audio randomly dropped every few
minutes, we eventually discovered that the digital out connection had
let go of the cable on the back of the Squeezebox!

Anyway to my points:

I'd like to nominate (if that's the way these things are done) Qnap for
a forum of its own. At the moment, every query and bit of information is
buried in the 40+ page thread and this makes it a bit difficult to find
things, and any query gets added on the end.

I've noticed that when Slimserver updates are released that they
overwrite all settings/preferences, is there a way of either saving the
settings and copying them back or preserving them?

Does anyone know the way of setting up MusicMagic with the Qnap
Slimserver? Can it be done?

Anyway, just to reiterate, the combination is IMHO, an absolute winner
and I think that Paul has done a great job under some sometimes
difficult conditions. Sometimes you just have to groundbreaking and be
a set of gineau pigs to get anywhere in this world!

Stuart.

It's a trivial task for any programmer to write a small utility that
traverses your music library recursively and adds 0s to the numbers
where appropriate.
Look at the first 5 (or so) characters in filename.
If there is a digit look at the next character.
If the next character is not a digit insert 0 before current
character.
This works for albums with track numbers up to 99 (probably 99% of all
cases)

[slim] Re: Squeezebox3 stutter/skip

2006-05-02 Thread ChrisOwens

Just to tie this thread off.

We had been trying to reproduce the stuttering problem for a long time.
It was delaying the release of 6.2.2! Finally, our RMA technician,
Enrico noticed a couple units stuttering.

I loaded firmware 28 on them as many users had reported and the problem
went away! Only a small fraction of SB3s turned out to have this
symptom, and all the effected the units worked great with firmware 28.

I soldered on a header to allow Richard Titmuss in the UK to debug the
hardware and shipped it to him. After some investigating, he
discovered that a new SDK from one of our suppliers had a different
default value for bus timing. He set it back to the old default, and
the problem was cured.

The changes were put into firmware 45, and were officially released in
firmware 48, currently available as part of the Slimserver 6.2.2
download at http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

This isn't fixable until 6.5 when we move to MySQL.

We need to either use:

ORDER BY SOUNDEX(title);

or:

ORDER BY title + 0;

That can only catch spoofed packets which are obviously wrong, e.g.
they're non-routable addresses or are from your internal network. It
can't detect spoofed packets appearing to come from a valid external
network.

Any decent firewall should not let spoofed packets enter your private
LAN. I use the "pf" packet filter as firewall on the FreeBSD box that I
use as slimserver, fileserver and NAT router at home.

It is correct that SoftSqueeze can use SSH tunneling, but I guess SSH
encryption / decryption will probably put too much stress on the CPU in
a hardware Squeezebox. And besides, apart from listening to your music
stream what benefit would a hacker gain from sniffing the packets in
the first place...

[slim] Re: Filter Genre

2006-05-02 Thread ceejay

Hi

Well, I can't argue with the princple of simple solutions if they solve
most of our problems!

However I fear that what you've suggested may be a little too simple
and might only solve a minority of problems.

What you've suggested (hide music from these paths or with these genres
from a player) would be a neat solution to the "don't play adult
material in the playroom" problem. Though I'm not sure it would be a
quick or easy thing to implement!

I don't think it solves the problem of keeping different users' music
separate, except in the special case where one user = one player. And I
don't think it solves the general "Collection" problem, which allowed
for overlapping sets of music to be in use at different times.

Having said that, I've been trying to think of an alternative "simple"
solution to your problem and can't think of one!

Ceejay.

I read that it does work for Win32 provided you are proficient enough
in Perl to get it installed and tweak it as needed, but sadly I am not.
I use C# every day in my work life and .NET makes it a piece of cake to
manipulate files and folders so I just rolled my own.

Anyone that wants the code just PM me.
