[slim] Re: Open Ports ... Security Issue?

2006-12-18 Thread AndrueC

Opening a port on your firewall is like unlocking a door on your house.
The security implications depend on who or what is waiting behind that
door. As long as the software that answers the door is robust and
can't be duped there is no problem.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to write software that meets those
requirements. Even people trying to write the kind of the software that
should expect to come under attack often don't get it right (think of
all the IE, FF etc. patches that have to be issued). I don't want to
cast aspersions but I'd be very surprised if SlimServer had been
written with that level of security in mind.

As for what might happen if someone breaks in using Slimserver:The
worst case scenario is that they take control over the machine that
SlimServer is running on without you knowing. From there they have full
access to your network and can browse all the storage attached to it.

[slim] Re: SS 6.5.1 = new music folder order

2006-12-18 Thread ceejay

You might want to have a look at the Custom Browse plugin. It has a
number of customisable browse functions including, IIRC, a Music Folder
Browse.

There is also a thread somewhere which explains how you can map the
Browse button on your remote to bring up Custom Browse if thats all you
want to use.

It may well be that by default it works the same as the normal BMF, but
at least it will be easy to find and customise the code.

[slim] LAN/WLAN issue

2006-12-18 Thread torwinen

Dont know if this is already discussed here but:

I just bought a WLAN version of Squeezebox and I am very happy with it.
Just one problem (or an improvement idea) about LAN and WLAN. My PC is
connected to Squeezebox via LAN and Squeezebox to internet via WLAN
(via AP and ADSL). PC is accessing internet via Squeezebox which has
LAN bridged to WLAN. Now, my problem is that I dont have the WLAN
always ON in my house. Whenever this is true, I have to change the
settings in the Squeezebox to connect to server via LAN instead of
WLAN. I wish Squeezebox could sniff the available networks and change
to the one that is available (would need a setting which one to prefer
is both are available). One option would be if Squeezebox could have
easier way to change between connecting profiles. Now I have to go
through all the settings to change from one to another. How about an
ability to save the settings to settings 1 and settings 2?

Until that, I guess I have to keep the WLAN always ON. Or do I have
some other options?

Thanks to Ceejay and Peter,
The suggestion to activate Show Artist with Album, assuming I show

Using Music Folder, great flexibility but redoing them for a 4digit

Thanks again

Paris, France, I could do on the diesel that's left in my tank. ;)

Whichever route you take, tags or directory, you're always going to have
to keep your collection organized in some way, especially if it's as big

[slim] Re: LAN/WLAN issue

2006-12-18 Thread Mark Lanctot

This is actually a partially-broken setup that involves more than
profiles - when you connect the Squeezebox to the PC, bridging will be
disabled. You should find that the PC loses Internet access when the
LAN option is on. When you turn the LAN function on, the Squeezebox
turns the wireless card off.

At any rate, it's a very, very rare setup. Yours is the first mention
of such an arrangement. You can file an enhancement request at
http://bugs.slimdevices.com (you'll have to create a new account) -
it's the only way the firmware developers can track it.

However, and I don't mean any offence here, it would not benefit many
people and firmware space is tight enough as it is. Only the
developers can say for sure whether it will be worthwhile for other
issues though, and unless you put in an enhancement request, you'll
never know and it will never get done.

As a workaround, connect the PC to your router either using a cable or
a wireless bridge. The cable is preferred because that will only make
it one wireless hop to your Squeezebox. I understand that's part of
the reason you have the Squeezebox in the first place, but if you have
the Squeezebox close enough to the PC to wire it (and the Squeezebox
close to your stereo), why not use a long audio cable out of the PC to
the stereo and use the Squeezebox elsewhere? This way the Squeezebox
will always be in communication over wireless for both SqueezeNetwork
and SlimServer. Plus the PC will always have Internet access.

[slim] Help Required on Ripping...you would think it would be easy...

2006-12-18 Thread iangude

My current set up for ripping CDs to MP3s involves the use of two
programs...

MusicMatch Jukebox
+ve - it tags nicely and gets the album art into the tag too
-ve - it doesnt use CDDB, hence often cant find cd info.

ITunes
+ve - it finds the stuff that MusicMatch cant find
-ve - it doesnt find the album art and stuff it in the tag.

Is there a program that will do both (ie use CDDB so it finds almost
all the cds AND gets the album art into the tag) ?

BUT...

Should I also be using MediaPlayer11, so as to create a seperate .jpg
album art file so that Windows Media Centre plays it ok. I cant go
down this route on it's own, as my Archos player needs the album art in
the tag.

Thoughts ?

Hello Mark, is this what you need ?, the player actually works ok
(apart from dropouts with internet radio now and again )
thanks

The server is currently collecting performance statistics for this
player.

You may set warning thresholds for each measurement. This will record
in the server log whenever the threshold is exceeded. The most recent
log entries can be viewed here.
Signal Strength
This graph shows the strength of the wireless signal received by your
player. Higher signal strength is better. The player reports signal
strength while it is playing.

Buffer Fullness
This graph shows the fill of the player's buffer. Higher buffer
fullness is better. Note the buffer is only filled while the player is
playing tracks.

Squeezebox1 uses a small buffer and it is expected to stay full while
playing. If this value drops to 0 it will result in audio dropouts.
This is likely to be due to network problems.

Squeezebox2/3 uses a large buffer. This drains to 0 at the end of each
track and then refills for the next track. You should only be concerned
if the buffer fill is not high for the majority of the time a track is
playing.

Playing remote streams can lead to low buffer fill as the player needs
to wait for data from the remote server. This is not a cause for
concern.

The new version of iTunes will find album art, all the version 7s do this.

I use ExactAudioCopy for all ripping, then use iTunes to put album art into
the tags. The whole thing can be done with iTunes but I am anal about using
EAC.

I don't RIP with iTunes, so it is possible this is a separate step (eg, rip,
then find album art and add it to tags) but at least it would use the same
program since that is your goal.

2006-12-18 Thread Secret Squirrel

There have been MANY discussions on this forum regarding this but I have
never put in my 2 cents worth, so here it goes...

I use Easy CD-DA Extractor (http://www.poikosoft.com/). I first rip my
CDs to FLAC and then use the converter to convert the FLAC to MP3 for
my Archos. In between those two processes I use Foobar 2000 to apply
replay gain tags. Easy CD-DA will down load album covers and place them
in the tags, but I do not use those imbedded tags. I also find that many
CD's tags are not what I expect or need, so I use MP3tag to
change/correct/spiff up. It's definitely a labor of love but worth your
investment.

2006-12-18 Thread Mark Lanctot

This is telling us one thing we know already - that IR response time is
slow. 8% of IR commands take between 1 and 5 seconds and 2% of IR
commands take between 0.5 and 1 seconds. This is a very long time for
IR commands.

28% of IR commands take between 0.1 and 0.5 seconds to process. This
is also quite slow for IR response.

This is also telling us something we don't know and that you haven't
commented on: web page response is very slow as well - 54% of web page
builds take between 1 and 5 seconds.

All in all, it's indicating the server is having a hard time keeping
up, probably due to a lack of resources, most likely memory.

As to where to go from here, it's hard to say. Try to minimize the
load on the server: don't use the web UI unless you need it, and try to
minimize the plugins you're using. Is your ReadyNAS being used for
other tasks (i.e. bittorrent?) Try to move ReadyNAS tasks like
bittorrent and ftp to a PC if you can.

Hopefully others will have other suggestions. You may want to check
the 3rd Party Hardware forum.

[slim] Re: Help Required on Ripping...you would think it would be easy...

2006-12-18 Thread MelonMonkey

iTunes 7 will get album art but not insert it into the music file. it
will store it in its own folder for (currently) exclusive use by iTunes
and iPods.

This isn't much of a problem. You can easily manually COPY and PASTE
the artwork from the main iTunes view into selected tracks to force it
to store within the tag metadata of the files.

Detailed instructions: http://twistedmelon.com/blog/sep2006.html

For Windows, use CTRL instead of Command to copy and paste where
instructed.

If you have only a few albums worth of tunes this isn't very
cumbersome. if you have a lot of music then you'll want to automate
the process with a script.

In Mac OS X you can use AppleScript and there are a couple of existing
scripts to do the job.

Get one here (inspired by above instructions):
http://nslog.com/2006/09/24/itunes_artwork_in_id3/

Someone else will have to offer up a Windows-specific script/automated
alternative.

The two best sources for album artwork on the net (bar none) are iTunes
and RateYourMusic.com

To Rip in Windows, use EAC or AudioGrabber.

To Encode to MP3 use LAME.

Do anything other than the above for MP3 and you're wasting your time.
For FLAC see http://Xiph.org

Try putting 0.5 in the High warning threshold box at the bottom of the

However if the NAS does not have enough memory, it won't be able to

[slim] Re: Slimserver shuts down by itself - why?

2006-12-18 Thread tfieldho

I'm having a couple issues. One appears to be related to the moodlogic
support that's enabled in 6.5 and I'll fix that as soon as the general
crashing is resolved. I'm suspecting the moodlogic issue is due to a
demo (timed out) version of moodlogic being installed when the initial
setup was run.

On to the crashing. I initially thought it was related to running the
fishbone skin since I wasn't running that until recently but I have
since disabled fishbone and still have the crashing issue. If anything
it has gotten worse recently and I can't stream from the server to my
dmp at all right now.

I'll provide what troubleshooting info I can but I'm going to have to
revert to 6.3 soon so I can listen to some tunes.

My event log entries are very similar to what's been posted here and
don't seem to be providing the information required to troubleshoot.
So here's the command line output from the service using the debug
switches. I'm not an expert on upnp so I won't even guess what the
issue is. hopefully someone smarter than I can determine the next
steps to isolating the issue.

My system: windows xp pro sp2, gigabit connection to a netgear switch,

have a Dell Z555 Digital Entertainment Center, a Roku Soundbridge M500

[slim] Re: Where is convert.conf located on OSX?

2006-12-18 Thread danco

I think there was a separate convert.conf file in 6.3 and below, but
with 6.5 it has been rolled into the preference pane itself. If you
control-click on the SlimServer preference pane in the Library folder,
you can Show Package Contents. Inside the contents is a folder named
server and convert.conf is in there, as is types.conf.

This implies that one should not change the file convert.conf, though
one may want to read it.

I'm not sure, but I suspect that if you want to change something, this
is best done by creating your own custom-convert.conf and putting it in
the SlimDevices folder.

By the way, Spotlight tends not to show you system files - I'm not sure
exactly which it shows and which it doesn't. EasyFind is often a better
bet.

[slim] Why Compress ???

2006-12-18 Thread tem

I've been lurking on this site and I'm about to take the squeezebox
plunge, but a couple of nagging questions keep running through my mind.
First let me state that sound quality is very important to me. That
being said I really love how much more of my music I found myself
listening to when I have all my cd's loaded into 2 large changers. I
consider the squeezebox the next evolutionary step (I've also
contemplated the sonos system), for accessing and distributing all my
music. My question is this...with memory being so cheap, why would I
want to rip my cd's to one of the lossless formats as opposed to just
ripping them as is. I use a computer all the time but certainly am no
hacker, and it seems that there is a lot of work involved. Am I
missing something or would it not just be easier to buy twice as large
a hard drive, rip full strength, download info via cddb/gracenote or
similar and be done. Won't this give me the artist/album /song info
I'll need to do various sorts.
thanks for any insights/advice, todd

Its no real work, you set up the ripping tool to do the tagging and
compressing, and then you just feed your CDs in one after another.
All the good ripping tools talk to cddb/freedb and do that part for you.
Automagically.

The down side to cddb, etc. is that if you listen to unpopular music, it
is usually wrong in cddb, or missing.

The compression storage saving on your hard disk is not going to be more
than 50% (or two to one) when you use lossless.

The big reason is that with a lossless, you can embed tags with the
files, and then the are self managing.

Plus you can stream the compressed Flac files to your SqueezeBox,
saving network bandwidth. Cutting the amount of data by a factor of 50%
can all you to have four times the usage (Ethernet is not linear).

2006-12-18 Thread mrfantasy

Depending on how many discs you have to convert, ripping them to a
lossless format is a great idea. FLAC is a favorite in these parts,
and you get about 50% compression, lossless, so you can fit even more.
I have a little over 300GB of data for 1100 CDs. A 400GB hard drive can
be found for $100 if you look around, and you don't need a particularly
fast drive for good playback performance.

If you have your files in FLAC, well-tagged and organized, you can
encode to MP3 when you need to for a portable player or something like
that.

You'd want to use something like EAC on Windows for the ripping. Lots
of stuff here for that. I used abcde on Linux, which does the ripping,
coding to FLAC and tagging in an automated fashion. I just pop a disc
in the CDROM attached to my NAS and it's all done automatically.

It may seem like a lot of work (it isn't really as long as you can
follow along step-by-step:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?EACBeginners ) but almost all of
that is just for getting the uncompressed WAV tracks. Compression is
the easy part.

BTW the term full strength seems to imply compressed lossless is
somehow inferior. It's not, any more than a zipped Word document is
inferior to the original Word document. Lossless is lossless - it
decompresses bit-for-bit identical to the original. The FLAC developer
has actually gone to great pains to ensure that it is bit-perfect and
the test suite is downloadable for anyone to try.

If you can save 50% of the storage space and wireless bandwidth without
any loss of sound quality, and it only takes 5 minutes of additional
setup, why not do it? :-)

[slim] Favourites and Playlists

2006-12-18 Thread RaK

Hello guys,

I am new to SB and I like the device more day by day ;). I have a litte
daughter which also wants to listen to her favourite music on the SB.
She is still not able to read, so using the menu is not the right
choice.

I learned that it is possible to put a internet radio stream as
favourite on f.e. key number 1. So if she presses 1 the strem would
start. I am searching for a feature to play a playlist instead of an
internet radio stream. So she would be able to press 1 to get her
favourite album nr.1 and 2 for ... .

You got it? Is that possible? If this is a FAQ could someone point me
in the right direction? I was not able to find something relevant using
the search until now.

[slim] Re: Why Compress ???

2006-12-18 Thread ModelCitizen

For me there is one reason to compress that is far, far more important
than any other. Tags. Dealing with non-tagged music (as wavs are) is
really painful.
I know I'm wierd but my comment fields even include artist bios and
album reviews.
Set you gear up correctly and it won't be so painful. If you compress
to lossless and ensure you have a back up you'll never have to do it
again.

I'll need to do various sorts.
thanks for any insights/advice, tod

I may be wrong but I believe there's no tagging standard for WAV files.
Modern computers are so fast in compressing and decompressing that there
is really no downside to using FLAC. After you've set up EAC with FLAC
support inserting the CD's and starting the ripping process is all the
work you have to do whether you rip to WAV, FLAC or MP3.

Peter

It's the same procedure as with radio streams: browse the playlists, press
RIGHT and scroll UP (or DOWN) until you get the Press RIGHT to add to
your favorites or something.
