UI a bit more straight forward. They seem to be clinging to the wizard
method that MS convinced everyone to use back in the late 90's was the

I also was disappointed to find out that the XML functionality that was

I can't usually reach the mains switch so it means pulling the cord

Using a timer switch on the router means it's hands off I suppose you

The router is less expensive than the sb, powering off and on the

Re: [slim] How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-02-27 Thread eindgebruiker

What I don't like is going through a lot of effort before listening to
the music I feel like listening to.

What I do like is Slimserver figuring this out for me. Random mix would
be good, but perhaps with a bit more control.

What I'm thinking of is this: Start with a random song mix. Then,
whenever I hear a song I really like, a push of a button would insert
the album containing that song in the playlist, just after that song.
When Slimserver is done playing the whole album it would continue with
the random song mix.

Of course you could quickly scan the random song list until you find a
song you like. The trick is to easily switch (one button) to album play
from that point.

This would be a simulation of cliveb's scanning a wall rack full of CDs
in post #15.

I noticed that firmware 1.2.0 includes this feature but this is not on

Would firmware 2.0 include this feature?

Any help much appreciated.

[slim] File names on Windows

2007-02-27 Thread y360

SlimServer on Windows seems sensitive to the codepage that is set in
ControlPanel-RegionalAndLanguageOptions-Advanced-LanguageForNon-UnicodePrograms

If I set it to Hebrew (cp1255), the scanner ignores all files folders
with names that have accented characters e.g. á
I assume that's because á does not exist in the cp1255 codepage

If I set it to English (cp1252), the scanner ignores all files
folders with names that have Hebrew characters

It is my understanding that the bug stems from a limitation in
ActiveState perl

I was wondering:

1. Are behavior cause indeed as described above

2. Does this ActiveState bug fix provide a possible solution
http://bugs.activestate.com/show_bug.cgi?id=60967

3. Is there any workaround (other than renaming files)

Re: [slim] MP3Gain, MP3Tag, iTunes craziness

2007-02-27 Thread Mark Lanctot

MrSinatra;183788 Wrote:
did u do what jeffmeh said, and use foobar or mp3gain to put it in
 there?

This was done at encode time with the FLAC encoder using the
--replay-gain switch. As many have pointed out, it will only do track
gains correctly. Usually the album gain gets the same value, not sure
why it's different in this case.

wouldn't it be nice if EAC simply copied the LAME tag value to the ID3
tag at the time of encoding?

But EAC's not handling the ReplayGain calculation at all (nor should
it, it's a ripper). The LAME encoder is, and it's doing it exactly the
way the LAME developers intended...which no one supports.

how did you do yours? did u just add a value in a tag, or did u change
 the audio file itself?

It's just a tag. I would never change the audio in a FLAC file and I'm
thankful there are no applications out there that can.

is this the kind of thing someone could write a plugin for? or is that
not possible if the scanner won't look for that information on library
 scans?

Reading this LAME tag isn't easy. In fact that program you found is
the first and only one I've ever seen that was able to do it.

I'm not sure why it's so hard and uncommon, but it seems to be.

which are in an ID3 tag i take it...

Actually MP3Gain writes an APEv2 tag. foobar seems to use an ID3 tag,
in a non-standard way at first - I can recall SS needed to be changed
to read it.

Re: [slim] MP3Gain, MP3Tag, iTunes craziness

2007-02-27 Thread Mark Lanctot

foobar, like SlimServer, is free, so go ahead and try it out.

MrSinatra;183801 Wrote:
can i automate foobar to do my whole collection at once?

Just load the whole collection in, select all (through Edit - Select
All, or click on the first, shift+click on the last), right-click,
ReplayGain. There are a series of options to choose from.

can i make it so that it will only deal with RG tags, and not affect any
other tags in any other way?

Yes.

and will it write into ID3 tags, or will it create ape tags which i
 don't want?

I believe it writes RG into ID3 tags. Why don't you want APE tags?
They work fine in SS.

and also what button do i use to simply add the RG tags?

The only buttons in foobar are for playback.

and which button do i avoid so as not to change the audiofile itself in
 anyway?

foobar does not alter the audio in any way when calculating ReplayGain.
It has a lot of functions and if you dig really deep it may have a
normalization function which may alter the audio, but you'd have to
really look for it. You could not alter the audio by accident, and I
may be wrong that it can alter the audio at all.

You're thinking of MP3Gain.

am i right in thinking that if i do this, SS will affect gain on the fly
on playback to the reference 89db level?

Yes. All RG calculations are done at the 89 dB level. In MP3Gain you
can alter the 89 dB reference, but everything else uses 89 and you
can't adjust it.

and is there anyway to configure EAC/Lame 3.9x to write the track values
into the ID3 tag at the time of ripping? (or ape tag if thats the only
 one possible?)

Don't think so. LAME does RG in its own non-standard way.

What Steven is describing isn't a shutdown, it's more subtle than
that.

It seems some routers run out of resources (RAM?) and various things
start to go wrong. Wireless clients can't access wired clients, files
can't be transferred, etc.

It was noted on this forum that this seems to happen with Belkin
routers, but any router might be susceptible.

Personally I'm using a Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware. It's the
older v4 version, the new WRT54GL is equivalent. It has more RAM
than the new versions, and it's been quite reliable for me. Even so,
about once a month the wireless module resets.

imho condemning all home/SOHO NASs is a huge overstatement. My
experience (with Buffalo LinkStation HG, definitely at the low end of
the NAS market) and that of many others has shown that these little
NASs do a good job at their intended purpose: providing network storage
for small networks. And they are as reliable as other hard disks, which
means that yes, they will die some day.

Just from reading other posts, it seems that a lot of the performance
and other problems come along with the more advanced home NASs that
have RAID and such. Because users paid more, expectations are higher,
and RAID makes things considerably more complicated. I've yet to
understand the fad for RAID in most home settings -- how critical is it
that home users not suffer any down time in the inevitable-though-rare
event of a disk crash? Granted, office situations are a different
story.

If the router loses Internet connection, it shouldn't do anything.
However if a wireless client, like the SlimServer PC in your case,

 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?NetworkDesign Do you have your
modem wired to your router, or does your router get Internet access by
 some other means?

If the router loses Internet connection, it shouldn't do anything.
However if a wireless client, like the SlimServer PC in your case,
loses wireless connection then yes, it might go looking for another
 network.

Yes, basically I think that is exactly what is going on. I guess I'm
looking for some help/tips on forcing the PC to stay connected to the
router (static IP?).

Check the wireless utility that came with the computer's wireless card.
(BTW it's usually better to use this than Windows Wireless Zero
Configuration, although WZC improved considerably in SP2).

There should be a setting for roaming aggressiveness. Set it as low
as possible.

There may be other settings you can change, but this is the only one I
see on my wireless laptop, using an Intel 2200BG wireless card
(internal, built-in as part of the Centrino platform).

Setting a static IP will not help. The wireless utility isn't aware
what IP has been set and will go out looking for another wireless AP
regardless of the IP address the PC is using.

[slim] Vista 64 Bit ACC encoded files

2007-02-27 Thread gasman

Hi There

I am new to the forum, but i've had my SB3 for over a year. I
installed Vista 64bit, managed to get slimserver to work just fine.
Only one problem, some of my music was ripped in AAC. Now slimserver
will play mp3 files no problem, but the AAC encoded files will not play
at all. They are not DRM protected files, just my CD's ripped in AAC.

I've tried the recommendations about installing iTunes and slimserver
and doing a clean rescan, no go. Installing Lame to transcode to mp3,
still no joy. Tried transcoding to flac, but this doesn't work either.
WTF!!!

Can anyone help? Coz this is the only major gripe I have with vista.

Thanks

2007-02-27 Thread Mark Lanctot

Just saw a review of this at:

http://www.xyzcomputing.com/index.php?option=contenttask=viewid=965

The reviewer wrote something a little strange:

The N800 actually has its own FM transmitter so with the help of an
application from Maemo it is possible to use it to listen to old
 fashioned radio as well.

and later:

 it receives FM radio

So which is it, transmit or receive?

Transmitting could be very useful if you use the device as a GPS
navigator in the car, which is the only way I could justify purchasing
it. Receiving FM is nice as well and is probably what the viewer
meant, but it's not as good as transmitting for me.

[slim] Weird Vista problem

2007-02-27 Thread bumpydog

Currently running Vista 32 bit Premium.
Downloaded Slimserver 6.5 and ran. Appeared to install ok and connect
successfully to my player after configuring the firewall.

Now the wierd bit. Ever since I've installed the slimserver software my
Vista Control Panel fails to open. A blank window simply appears and
immediately disappears...! No amount of restarting the computer has any
affect. The only thing that works is to uninstall slim server. I've
tried this several times and the effect is the same each time. I've
even done a complete reinstall of vista and as soon as I install
slimserver the problem returns.

I know this sounds strange but its almost as if the slimserver s/w is
corrupting something. Anyone seen anything similar ?

[slim] SB3 crashes when XBOX starts

2007-02-27 Thread El Wimpo

Hi,

I'm using the Ethernet bridge in my SB3 (connected to SlimServer 6.5.1)
to network my XBOX. Every time I start the XBOX the SB crashes (screen
goes dead). If I restart it by unplugging the power it works fine
afterwards.

The SlimServer seems unaffected by all this and even when the SB is
down it keeps bridging the Ethernet to WLAN.

Anyone ever seen anything similar?

Nope, not something requiring a reset. This is a software setting in
slimserver. Why wouldn't you just press the repeat button to turn
repeat off again, like you did the first time? I'd guess that one of
the buttons on your universal remote just so happens to correspond to
the repeat button on the squeezebox remote but you just may not
realize it; you're probably just hitting the button accidentally.

by the way: you can also change this setting via the web interface, so
perhaps you accidentally clicked it there at some point.

[slim] Can't Get Rid of music from shortcut

2007-02-27 Thread gdpeck

I'm using Slimserver 6.5.1 - 11206 on Windows XP. I currently keep two
versions of music file on my computer.
Lossless compressed files are in: C:\My Music\flac\artist\album\
Compressed files are in c:\my music\compressed\artist\album
Slimserver music folder is set to c:\my music\flac

Upgrading to 6.5.1 caused me to lose the ability to transcode. In
troubleshooting that problem, I wanted to play some mp3 files so I
created a windows shortcut to c:\my music\compressed\3 doors down\the
better life in c:\my music\flac. I then did a rescan which added the
files in the shortcut to my library. Now that I have resolved the
transcode issue, I would like for the files in c:\my music\compressed\3
doors down\the better life to not show up in my slimserver library. I
have deleted the shortcut, but subsequent re-scans still add the files
in c:\my music\compressed\3 doors down\the better life back to my
library. I have tried the following:
-Clear library and rescan everything scans
-Uninstall Slimserver, delete c:\program files\slimserver, reinstall
-Delete playlists and rescan
-Stop Slimserver, delete c:\program files\slimserver\server\cache,
restart slimserver
-Make sure that slimserver is set to Do Not use iTunes

Nothing gets rid of these files. Any suggestions to fix this would be
appreciated.

Thanks!
George

That looks nice, Peter. IMO Slim should just make that the default
behavior. I was thinking of having a single press give status, and
press-hold allow you to cycle through the options with the arrows and
then select. I really hate these modal interface settings, and this
doesn't solve it but does make it more tolerable.

running the latest build of SS. my playlists folder shows X:\My
Documents\My Music Playlists in server settings but it is empty now but
still shows playlists when the playlist menu item is selected

Go to server settings--you need to rescan (probably clear database and
rescan)

Do you know if Erland's custom browse plug-in should work with your
nokia skin? When I try, I get a blank screen (not especially
 encouraging).

ps. Custom Browse and Custom Scan really improve the browsing ability
 of slimserver, IMO.

TrackStat looks really cool...do you know if any other skins support it?
That doesn't mean I won't do it if they don't, but would give me a
template to get started. I've put support in for Album Review and
Artist Biography plugins on the now playing page, so the precedent is
already there...this one looks like it would be a bit more involved. As kdf
says TrackStat integrates with Now Playing and Browse menus by
providing mixer button in the same way as the MusicMagic plugin does.
But this is just access buttons for the TrackStat pages, one also needs
to make sure the that the TrackStat page itself works, this is the page
shown when the mixer buttons has been pressed.

I officially support the default and Fishbone skin with all my plugins.
I haven't looked at the rest of the skins, mainly because I only use
Fishbone myself. Typically there is often some special handling that
needs to be done for each skin to make sure the plugin works correctly.
Supporting all skins available means more special handling which means
that I need to spend more time handling skin differences instead of
implementing new core features in the plugins. So due to this I only
want to implement support for a bare minimum number of skins myself,
default is a must since it's the default skin used, fishbone is needed
since I use it myself, but I don't think I will be implementing support
for the rest of the skins myself.

I have said it earlier and I will say it again, if someone provides a
patch for a skin that you like support for I would be very happy to
include that patch in the distribution.

I really like it and it would be great ot be able to see the rate
and/or being able to rate on the fly from the play now page of the
 nokia 770 skin.
There is a number of title formats available that can be used for
showing the rating, I'm not sure if they will work good with the nokia
skin. Basically you can select to show all tracks as: Track title
(Rating) instead of just Track title. The problem with the titel
formats could be that the screen page isn't enough on the nokia device
to display ratings after the track title.

Setting rating directly in the play now page would require more work.
I would suggest that any integration with TrackStat just launches the
standard TrackStat pages where it's already today possible to set the
rating, for example by incorporating the mixer buttons I mentioned in
my previous post. I would suggest that if you want to rate directly on
the play now page this shall be done by implementing support in
standard SlimServer for setting ratings, instead of integrating with
TrackStat. I have already suggested this in the following thread
together with some other things, but there wasn't much interest among
the developers at the time.

This is very worrying. I have a logitech 880 the new software has just
screwed up my config. I cannot even revert back because it's all on
line. I was going to buy a Transporter to add to my 2 SB3's but this
has convinced me to go elsewhere for a good DAC.

This is why I have a Squeezebox, but bought a MX-500 instead of a
Harmony: I am WILDLY suspicious of devices that depend on companies'
continued future competence, goodwill, and existence for future
operation. If Slim dies or goes evil, SlimServer is still open source,
so last-good versions will still be available and future development
will probably still happen. But when Harmony goes evil, you're scrod.

(Of course, I just bought a Tivo Series 3, which goes against this
premise, but better possible future evil than the sure and certain evil
of a Motorola DVR, there...)

[slim] Shadow Play

2007-02-27 Thread ds2021

For those using the Shadow Play (permanent) plugin, does it act to Sync
the audio of effected players? All discussion of this plugin seems to
revolve only around being able to see the activity of another player.
If yes, can the permanent version do this for more than 2 players?

I am aware of the Sync and X-Sync features, and they are great, but
'SS6.5.x has a bug' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4638)
in which certain internet radio stations will not play when SBs are
synced. I want to upgrade to 6.5.x, but this bug is a show-stopper. As
it has remained unsolved for some time since I reported it, I am now
looking for a work-around.

Re: [slim] Can't Get Rid of music from shortcut

2007-02-27 Thread ceejay

Is there perhaps a playlist which references these files? Possibly the
now playing playlist for one of your players? Try giving each player
(including any softsqueezes) a completely fresh album to play from your
flac collection, then do a full clear and rescan.

Re: [slim] Slimserver is woeful on Windows

2007-02-27 Thread Michael Herger
I wonder if it is possible to turn up debugging on the scanning process
or run scanner.exe in a verbose mode to see what is going on?

Run scanner.exe -h to get a list of available parameters. Try -d_info
-d_scan for a start.

Re: [slim] Shadow Play

2007-02-27 Thread fcm4711

Hi there

No, ShadowPlay (both the regular one and the permanent one) doesn't
sync the music. It only brings the display content from a remote player
to a local player and also sends ir commands to the remote player.

What exactly do you mean by 'does it work for more than two players'?

BTW: The difference between the regular and the permanent version is
only that the regular one offers a menu on the player to choose the
remote player whereas the permanent one has a fix relation set between
two players which then becomes active upon (re-)starting SlimServer.

Cheers
Felix
