Re: [slim] Slimserver 6.5.1 Problem: Songs Cut Off
Wow - you guys are lucky as hell. I just checked description for bug ID 4354, and the notes suggest that this problem happens for maybe 1 in 100 songs. Or even 1 in 50. Are you kidding me??? This is happening to -*virtually every song-* on my system! That's the reason I posted immediately after upgrading to 6.5.1 Is anyone else getting this problem to the same degree as me? If so, it's got to be worth logging on to bugzilla and adding your vote to the bug. So far it only seems to have 4 votes (5 including mine). I don't know how much difference it makes (if any) but voting for it has got to be better than not (?) Example - in the last 5 songs I've just played, 4 of them had the end cropped. If I can stick with 6.5.1, I'm very lucky if one in 10 songs is NOT cropped. -- gutted http://www.last.fm/user/gutt3d/ Slimserver 6.3.1 +MusicIP Mixer 1.7 +MoodLogic 2.7.1.18 +AlienBBC 1.02a +Slimscrobbler 0.34 Windows 2000 Professional sp4 Intel Celeron 1.4GHz 512MB RAM Squeezebox 1 wireless (Player Firmware Version: 40) Library of approx 6600 MP3s gutted's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=147 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33277 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Slimserver won't start automatically
Recently, I found that SS was no longer starting automatically on startup. I also got a some service crashing message (with typical Windows vagueness). The second time I got the message, I opted to send the details to Microsoft, expecting the usual silent result. Instead, I was taken to an MS web page that said that some people were having trouble launching certain kinds of services following the most recent XP security update. The page offered a patch, which I installed. On the second reboot (yes, this is Microsoft, remember) all was well again. Sorry that I can't be more specific about the details, but it was a couple of weeks ago and I didn't take notes. -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31162 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For me, the bottleneck is the upload bandwidth to get the data out there in the first place. My flac library is not huge, around 85 GB, but my ISP limits upload bandwidth to 384 kbps, or 768 kbps if I pay an additional $10 per month. 85 GB ~= 9 x 10^10 bytes ~= 7 X 10^11 bits 384 kbps ~= 4 x 10^5 bits/sec 85 GB / 384 kbps ~= 2 x 10^6 sec ~= 23 days Even at double the bandwidth, it would take over 10 days, assuming that I was able to get the maximum bandwidth, that it never timed out, got interrupted, encountered errors, etc. To be honest, I have the storage space out there already, and I tested uploading 1 album's worth of flac files. It took so long that I decided not to continue. Now, if I had physical access to the server and could seed it with the 85 GB by connecting a USB drive, I might consider doing incremental uploads from there. However, even that is pretty impractical unless you have much better upload bandwidth. I have 1024 Kbit upstream (20 Mbit down) and I backup my (100 G+) files to a colo server (which I seeded first) and I can confirm that even with incremental backups you have to be careful not to add too much music at once. I'm not entirely sure whether I've understood what you're seeing, but I believe it's working as configured. The word 'The' is in the list of words to be ignored at the start of the names. In the 'Behavior settings' (sic), there is a section as follows : -- ARTICLES TO IGNORE WHEN SORTING A list of articles (the, les, los, etc.) to ignore at the beginning of artist, song or album names when sorting. Separate multiple articles by spaces or leave this list blank to disable this behavior. Changing this setting will start a rescan of your music library. -- On the system here, I've got it set to 'The El La Los Las Le Les' which means that anything starting with any of those words will be sorted as if the word wasn't there. To take an example, 'The Moody Blues' is under 'M', not 'T'. If 'The' was not in the list above then the artist would be sorted into the 'T' section. The result of this would be 50 million artists all sorted into 'T'. And more confusion, on my part, because I'd never be quite sure whether 'Village People' was under 'Village People' or 'The Village People'. With 'The' ignored, it's simple - they're under 'V' whether the word is on the front or not. ('Village People' selected purely because I always say 'YMCA by The Village People', rather than 'YMCA by Village People', 'cos that just sounds silly). In my collection here, with 'The' in the above list, I can scroll through the 'S' section and see entries in this order : ..., 'Seafood', 'The Seahorses', 'Seal', ... I hope that answers your question a little bit - I think it's just confusion about that particular setting. No. What you see when you press and hold left on the remote is the player's firmware interface. It's one of the few things that the player can do on its own, without a server of any kind. Re: [slim] Nokia 770 or other handheld to controll slimserver
Mark has all points covered, just wanted to add that the functions you asked about, powering on/off, synching, are all available using the Nokia770 skin. The skin itself is a modern browser-based application: HTML/CSS/Javascript/AJAX. It's built using Perl's Template Toolkit, which is the heart of how skins are put together for interfacing with slimserver. Documentation here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SkinDevelopment The other option is to build a standalone app that communicates with slimserver through either http or it's CLI. There are several existing projects that do this, softsqueeze (java), moose (.NET), slimFX (flash) to name a few. This route may appeal to you if you are comfy in javaland. One side note: java does not exist on the Nokia 770 or the newer model the N800 (which I hear is a big improvement). cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas the Nokia770 skin guy http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33498 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

We may want to think along the same lines though - what I suggested for the SB worked because Slim Devices shares IR codes with JVC DVD players. It may be the same case here - small manufacturers may implement their own IR codes, but it makes more sense to borrow a larger manufacturer's codes because they are more widely supported with universal remotes. Otherwise, most universal remotes have a learning function. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33505 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi Mark, Thanks again for responding. My 2 players have been hard booted, soft booted, cuddle booted and whispered to in to in tounges by sultry maidens (at great personal expence..) I've tried rebooting the PC then playing files or playing the files then rebooting the PC Still no luck. Yep, I guess Krell also uses a 'standard' code set of another brand, I only don't know which. I already sent an email to Krell customer support but haven't got an answer yet. I tried the learning function but without success. Well, that says more about me then about the remote because I also tried the learning function for the SB3 and that also didn't work. I was going to suggest a factory reset (unplug the power, press and hold ADD and replug the power) but your log is indicating SlimServer is having trouble transcoding. The process isn't working or isn't allowing SlimServer to control it. I think there were some changes recently regarding which decoder to use for decoding AAC or Apple Lossless files. Unfortunately I believe it was pre-6.5.1, so you should have it. Re: [slim] Radio Stations Playing but Music Files Arn't
Hmm, vexing isn't it. Worth a try though.. I downloaded the new version but it woudn't start. It said it was starting but it just never did. Maybe there is a clue in that or maybe there isn't I uninstalled it. Rebooted the old PC and reinstalled your currrent 6.5. For some reason it decided it didnt like where my music files were located and chose a directory that my music was not in. So.. I moved my music to that directory (as I hadn't tried that one yet) but it didn't work. Radio is fine. FLAC recorded files are fine. Old files just still wont play. Next and a prize for the wittiest. Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista
Just installed Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Had a bit of a problem at first but managed to get it sorted out in the end. SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Windows Vista - EN - cp1252 Here's what I did: Installed Slimserver 6.5.1, at first it wouldn't load in Vista. Went to control panel and had a look at the settings on the Windows Firewall. Made sure 'Slim Devices' was in the exceptions list. Went through setting up my networking again on the 'Squeezebox' When I installed Vista I'd changed the name of 'my computer' from what I had on XP so the Squeezebox had to re-find everything. Now everythings up and running:) Not sure what'll happen when I shut down and restart. Personally I don't think the problem is with Vista's firewall, I just think the Squeezebox network needs setting up again one step at a time very carefully. Hope you all get it up and running because it is very annoying:) -- tokyosexwhale tokyosexwhale's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10632 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32578 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

How easy is it to setup? Once setup, can you opt to just backup new or amended files? That all depends. Surf the web for colo sites or even real or virtual servers you can rent. I happened to have a spare 1U server that I fitted with an extra 300 GB disk for my backups. I pay 20 EURO's a month for rackspace at a company near my place of work. Maximum data transfer 30G/mo (occasional overdrafts are allowed). Setup of a Linux box with rsnapshot is not that difficult, but that depends on you mostly. Of course you just backup changed files. My system keeps 7 weeks worth of backup snapshots (I can recover files for any day for the last 7 days or any week for the last 7 weeks).
