Andy, thanks for clearing this up. But as most of the listed setting are only set once during the process of setting up SC/SN, it would be really nice to have the often changing setting having synched (favourites, podcasts). It's always a pain to have your podcasts set up in SC not available when connected to SN. Re: [slim] upnp/dlna support for squeezebox
Because slimproto is proprietary in that it is not mainstream standard. But when thinking about dlna on sB3 one has to consider that xbox and ps3 and alike a huge monsters in calculation power and what I wouldn't like. The arn't as silent as SB3. [slim] Some unsorted questions
Hi, I have got some rather diverse questions and do not want to open so many threads: 1. Can I have the volume control in Slimserver not range from 0 to 11 but from -48db to 0db? My preamp has this sort of scale and it would be easier to understand this way. 2. Is it possible to try squeezecenter 7.0 while sticking to 6.5.4 on my main server? I have got a nas running 6.5.4 stable for a while and want to stick to it since SC7 will need repackaging for that nas. But I would like to look at SC7. Will there be firmware problems or will each server feed my players back and forth with respective firmware? 3. How exactly is setup of sbr with sbc done? I heard that the controler talks to slimserver and that it inturn talks to the receiver. This seemingly isn't true for setup right? I am asking since the sbr lacks a display and would therefore be THE device for blind people you are quite into music listening mosttimes but don't have decent audio gear. If the setup could be done without the remote that is of no use to the blinds right now the sbr allone would be a real deal! -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44015 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] No album problem...
I had the same problem. I have a lot of tracks not related to any album. To 'resolve' the issue I use 'Single - ARTISTNAME' as album tag. It really works quiet well also when browsing using the SB3. If there is a solution for 'No album' tags that ofcourse would be much better. I've ordered the Duet so it comes to mind that when browsing through albums starting with 'S' I will have a lot of them because of my naming convention but the same problem exist for leaving the album tag empty. Re: [slim] Some unsorted questions
There may be a usability issue about the SBR's button and LED. The status of the SBR is shown by its LED - steady, flashing rate and colour. When resetting the SBR the user has to press it until it Flashes. I believe the SBR goes into a test mode if it is pressed for too long. If you are blind or colour-blind then you may have difficulty getting the SBR to work if the button pressing is picky. If this is an issue I'm sure it can be resolved with some feedback, more development and possibly by setup using the SC plugin which may have better feedback. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44015 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wi-Fi Internet Clock Radio?
Last weekend I found the Roku Soundbridge Radio at Fry's for $99.99. From what I'd read about it, I had my doubts about buying it, even at that price, but would have to say that I've been pleasantly surprised by how well it performs. Physically, it's smaller than I expected and for a table radio, the sound is excellent. After upgrading the firmware, it was able to connect to my network using WPA2 security. It recognized SlimServer immediately, even though I'm running a recent build of SqueezeCenter. Plugins don't work and synchronization is awful, but I was able to play tracks from my music library without any problem. The Roku's real strength is streaming radio. With 18 presets, it's great being able to select your favorite Internet stations with a push of a button. The Roku includes an AM and FM receiver, but it needs a strong signal, especially for AM. Other nice features include a light sensor that automatically dims the display at night and a clock that sets itself from a configurable network time server. Granted the Roku has many limitations when compared to a Squeezebox, but it seems like a very acceptable compromise solution for a bedroom, kitchen, or other rooms. -- corbey My two-channel system: - SB-3 through a CIAudio VDA-2 DAC (and using Nokia N800 as a remote) - Sony SCD-1 CD/SACD player - WyeTech Labs Jade tubed preamp - Chord SPM 1200C power amp - Basis 2001 turntable w/ Graham Arm Lyra Helikon cartridge - Klyne phono stage - Proac 2.5 speakers corbey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] itunes playlists are flattened
In SqueezeCenter 7.0 ... how come the itunes playlist (folders) are flattened? This is really inconvenient since I have multiple folders with the same playlist names (consider, I have two copies of everything, one in apple lossless, the other in mp3 for the ipod). When they are imported, I end up with just one flat list of playlists. Even worse, it takes the second one it finds, so what I have are playlists of the mp3s instead of the apple lossless versions (which is obviously what I want to play on my home stereo). Re: [slim] Some unsorted questions
Certainly setting up the SBR would be hard if you're blind, not so much because of the button pressing but because the initial setup is via the screen on the SBC. Once setup is possible via a PC and control can be via SC7 (and thus a screen reader) that should be better. As for color blind folks, I don't think it should be much of a problem. The only flashing modes are red (slow/fast) and white. There is a green stage for a few seconds during setup, but to be honest I don't think you'd suffer by not seeing it, it's purely informational. The full list of colors/flash patterns is here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SBRFrontButtonAndLED FYI - test mode requires you to press and hold while applying power. Sorry, I can't provide any solutions. But, I can tell you you that I have the same issue. All of my previously saved (and working) playlists suddenly became empty according to SS. Saving new playlists using SS's web interface doesn't work either. I've even tried creating a playlist manually, but SS still reports it as empty. Other applications (Amarok for example) have no problem playing the same playlists created in SS. I have been following other threads here discussing the same, or very similar issues. So far, I haven't found a solution that works for me. Hopefully, a fix will be discovered soon. If you are really paranoid: WPA-PSK: use a password consisting of acronyms and numbers that only have meaning to yourself. Randomly replace certain characters with symbols (i.e. @ for A, or ! for i) SSID: do not broadcast MAC: only allow the MAC addresses of your devices to access your wireless network The SSID and MAC may add additional security, but by themselves they are not adequate. you do need the WPA encryption. Re: [slim] Protecting Wireless Network From Intruders
1) MAC filtering is entirely useless. It will only annoy you when you can't figure out why things don't work properly. Likewise for SSID broadcast, leave it on and lead a happier life. WPA with a decent passphrase is quite strong enough for anything you're sending over your network. Remember it's all in the clear once it leaves your cable modem anyway... 2) Steve Gibson is, IMHO, a pompous snake oil salesman. Sorry, but it has to be said. I know some people around here love him, but hey, if you've read the audiophile forum you'll know there are people who will believe anything :) I'm not going to present any evidence for my statement, just google around if you're interested. No one in the actual security business takes him seriously. 3) Feel free to use a 20 character passphrase if you like, it's certainly true that the longer the better. However, I use 8 truly random characters. It's easy to enter with an SB remote and I would be quite happy to challenge anyone to break it, and offer a nice bottle of something to anyone who can do so before we're both dead :) This makes interesting reading: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=127. GRC seems to have got his value of 20 from the study of attacks on the IDEA cypher which is really unrelated to WPA. According to the authors of the best WPA craking tool (aircrack) you can only test around 300 keys per second (http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=cracking_wpa). MAC filtering is nearly as hard to manage as the olden days of each PC needing manual TCP/IP address assignments. It will drive you crazy. 2) Steve Gibson is, IMHO, a pompous snake oil salesman. He's a bit of an amateur posing as a professional. Still, I've gotten something from his site now and then. I too find an occasional nugget but he's mostly selling snake oil Read Bruce Schneier for professional guidance. Bruce recently posted about how his home WiFi is all in the clear. 3) Feel free to use a 20 character passphrase if you like, it's certainly true that the longer the better. Only up to a point. Longer is only better if there is more entropy. Using four score and seven years ago, our forefathers... has about the same security as a three character password. The fundamental problem with passwords is that if they are strong, no one can remember them. So they write them on yellow stickies. Realistically, you are unlikely to be attacked over your WiFi network, as that requires the bad guys to be withing a mile of your house. Its far more likely that your cable modem's lame security is the weak link, and like chains, its all about the weak link. The botnets have at least 100,000 Windows PCs ready and able to go. They come in through broadband connections. WiFi can't handle the bandwidth. Start with the basics. Change the SSID from Linksys to something personal. Change the password to the router's admin page. Put a firewall between your DSL/Cable line and your house computers. And for gosh sake, don't use Windows. But consumers want convenience not security. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Some unsorted questions
Hello, concerning setup I would connect the sbr via wired ethernet since I hate the hassles with streaming drop outs and feel I get some sort of headache not only when using the wifi components inside computer gear but also when I live next to them. Would wired ethernet make setup easier? -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44015 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
