[slim] Random Mix plugin not maintaining state across restarts

2008-03-24 Thread ILikeSoup

It seems this complaint has come up a few times and been lumped into
'bug 3297' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3297) but it
seems to persist after quite some time. Is the structure of slim
server conducive to maintaining playlist-oriented plugin states across
server restarts?

The title of the bug does not really reflect the problem with restart
state. Anyone know of a more appropriate or active bug? Anyone else
want to 'vote for it'

2008-03-24 Thread frold

Hey

Im using the Squeezecenter 7.0 and listen to alot of podcasts using:

But how do I go forward in the podcast? - Im not able to do so via my

works...

Do I need a plugin or how to? I guess the SqueezeCenter is downloading
the podcast to play it so browsing it should be possible as far I can

Hope to get some help

Hope it works out for you, jdb. One of the unexpected benefits of these

Had the same problem:
Amarok has this feature download image from amazon, or specify a file.
It is then saved in the id3-tag somewhere.
It does not show up, there is no *.jpg file in the folder. but SC7
shows it just fine. I believe it to be embedded, because it works on my
creative as well.

I do not like the idea of calling all artwork folder.jpg, it is so easy

connection that the SBC makes to the SBR during set-up uses quite a
different mechanism from the IP broadcast to find available music
servers. To find a server, for the SBR it must be on the same sub-net,
while the config between SBC and SBR is a special process, presumably
utilising a pre-determined temporary network connection. In any event,
you certainly need the SBR to be on the same sub-net as your music

Re: [slim] FLAC issues

I've also got FLAC issues. I've moved from running V6.x on a QNAP 101
to V7.0 on a Windows Home Server. I've now got some FLACS that just
repeatably stop half way through and others that give pops and clicks.
I've tried converting them to MP3 and WAV using DBpoweramp reference and
they play ok and the flac checksum is valid so I think the transfer from
the QNAP to the WHS was valid.

I can only conclude it's either the firmware on the SB3 or SC7.0.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

XP SP2.

I did some more testing...

With FLAC set to decode server side, playing a track pops flac.exe up
into the process tree (as expected) and the track in question fails to
work.

I then removed flac.exe from the server/bin subdirectory and tried
again. This time no flac.exe (of course) in the process tree, but
squeezecenter still attempted (and failed to play) - I assume it falls
back to internal decoding if flac.exe isn't available.

Setting FLAC-NATIVE (eg client-side) once again the track works
correctly.

And as noted, with FLAC-WAV server-side transcoding, which fails with
the SB and Duet, it works perfectly well with SoftSqueeze (firmware 2)

Any debug logs I can turn on which might help?

Cheers,

Mark

I would second the request for UPnP support on the SB devices.

The single advantage Sonos has over these systems, is their ability to
index music from any NAS with a network share. With UPnP support
Squeezebox could come a long way in the same direction.
I would love to not have to turn on my computer to listen to my music,
which is stored on my NAS anyways.

In order to store the information about the music on the NAS or any
other UPnP enabled device .. perhaps the Squeezebox controller with a

Ah but remember I believe the one of Sonos weakness is because of its
UPNP nature, that is it can not index large collections. I think the
limit is 40k songs. Some of you may think that is huge, however a good
number of people see that as small.

translucent title bars, cool animations and lots of eye candy.

4)There is a beautiful side bar with a good collection of gadgets as
follows-

* Calculator that performs basic math functions.
* Analog clock (several designs to choose from).
* CPU and memory meters that let you keep an eye on the mount of
system resources in use.
* Currency converter for quick international monetary

* Feed viewer for tracking news, sports, and entertainment
headlines via RSS.
* Feed watcher for monitoring your selected RSS feeds.
* Notepad for quickly jotting reminders or bits of info you need to
keep.
* Slide show applet that displays a continuous slide show of the
photos in your Pictures folder.
* Stocks ticker that lets you track trading prices and see charts
for your selected stocks.
* Countdown timer for alerting you when a specified interval has
passed.
* Number and picture puzzles.
* Recycle bin.
* Games.

5)The next new thing that you will notice is the icons. It has a whole
new collection of icons that looks great and increase its looks.

6)The Start menu hasn't changed much. You can still pin your favourites
to the top-left side, and the right side still ontains commonly used
items such as Documents, Pictures and Music, Computer, Network and
Control Panel, Search, and Help. If you want to restart, switch users,

[slim] Firmware downgrade..?

2008-03-24 Thread Adlopa

After trying SC7, I decided I didn't like it (too slow on my low-power
server), so I uninstalled it and reinstalled SS6.5.

However, both Squeezeboxes were left at the 'New firmware' screen after
detecting SC7 and I couln't get them past it. Out of curiousity, I
upgraded the firmware on one -- and now it won't connect to the server
at all.

So, here's a couple of questions that I can't find answers to
anywhere:

1. How do I stop Squeezebox A from thinking it needs a firmware
upgrade?
2. How do I downgrade Squeezebox B to the firmware from SS6.5?

All help appreciated...

Apples lossless use a different decoder alac - so it looks like only

Assuming the m4a file are uncorrupted, haven't been changed by iTunes

Re: [slim] How do I allow power-saving Standby mode?

2008-03-24 Thread sunset-squeeze

There is a known issue with Intel Viiv Quick Resume which can prevent
a PC from timing out to Standby when using a Squeeze Box.

If Quick Resume is enabled, and you wake up the PC from Standby via a
Wake on LAN by turning on a Squeeze Box, it will never go back to
Standby after the Squeeze Box is turned off.
(The only way to get to Standby is to use do something on the PC
itself.)

http://downloadmirror.intel.com/12128/ENG/Release_1523.htm,

The system will not timeout to Hibernation or Standby via the system
inactivity timer if the system has awakened to Quick Resume mode from
Hibernation or Standby from a programmed video recording or a wake on
LAN event .
Workaround: Wake the system to S0 via the mouse or keyboard and then
allow the inactivity timer to expire or manually put the system in to
Hibernation or Standby.

Hope someone recognizes the issue and can point me to the solution.

[slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread timmerweb

I'm just wondering when we will see a SqueezeBox device (either new
product or firmware upgrade for existing ones) that can funtion without
the need of the SqueezeCentre server?

I understand the value-add of the server, but the fact of the matter is
that more and more home users are getting notebook computers these days
and its becoming much less common to have a desktop computer in the
home. Notebooks are of course totally inappropriate for running server
software, since they must be kept awake at any time that the server is
needed, and that's not practical.

I'm really interested in getting a SqueezeBox, but its requirement for
a server is a deal-breaker for me, since I have no suitable desktop
computer to run the server on, nor do I wish to purchase a computer for
the sole purpose of running SqueezeCenter.

I notice that Sonos is able to access network shares directly from any
NAS device with no additional servers needing to be run, which is the
functionality I'm looking for. Too bad about the exorbitant price of
it though. :(

When will SqueezeBoxes get similar functionality so that notebook-only
households like mine can make use of what sounds like an excellent
product?

Re: [slim] upnp/dlna support for squeezebox

2008-03-24 Thread Zaragon

The difficulty I envisage with uPNP is that it is kind of an ad-hoc
system which allows any given client to connect to any given server at
any time. I can see people having problems:
*I can see x servers which is my music on?
*Why does the music stop when fred switches off his PC.
*Why can I see the same music on different servers
*Why are there different servers and why do they keep changing
*Why can't I play picture.jpg?

and then there are those servers that want to authorize the players
before they connect them.

On top of which will be all the usual network, firewall, port, tag
problems as well as however the uPNP server choses to catagorise and
serve them.

I'm glad I don't work for support :)
[Wait a minute, that's what I'm doing here for free. Darn!]

A couple of things worth noting:

1) Is your controller actually restarting or just going to sleep? When
it wakes up there is usually a wait of a few seconds while it
reconnects to the network.
2) There was/is a known bug which caused occasional restarts of the
controller. If it isn't fixed already it should be soon I imagine, I

Re: [slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread Zaragon

Since the NAS is a PC with a dedicated purpose you just defeated your
requirement :)

Seriously though with more laptops around the place people are
considering how they backup and/access all the shared content and are
turning to 'servers' in some shape or other.

Many NAS are becoming that server able not only to share disks but
server music, video, pictures, act as backup devices, print servers and
many other functions.

I suspect that over the next few years more and more things will arrive
that expect to see an always available source. It is something that
Microsoft with the XBox360 and Sony with PS3 are driving towards and of
course there is the Windows Home Server and I'm sure Linux won't be too
far away as well.

There are NAS devices out there now that are capable or even already
have SqueezeCentre installed. As an example take a look through the
forums for RipStation which looks like being an extremely consumer
friendly home media server. OK it's a ripper that also functions as a
NAS but there are others mentioned from time to time.

If you feel able for a little DIY there are also some very nice picoATX
motherboards around, attach a 1TB disc, load the supplied Linux and you
have the makings of a home server where the disc is bigger than the PC.

Fixed: Sign in failure requiring flush of cookies

Perhaps the idea behind this particular fix needs to be taken into
account by or propagated to SqueezeCenter/Squeezenetwork?

Fingers crossed,

Re: [slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread jbuberel

Tim:

The SqueezeBox does not in any way require you to operate a server on
your home network. It can and will function perfectly without one, as
it does for me.

My configuratino:

1. Squeezebox
2. WiFi network and Internet access
3. Subscriptions to Rhapsody and Pandora on-line music services

The Squeezebox is used exclusively to play music back from my Rhapsody
(3 million songs available) and Pandora (hundreds of thousands songs
available).

Although I do have a desktop PC at home on which I could run the
SqueezeCenter software, I have no need to do so. I do not 'own' any of
my music collection, I only rent it via on-line services such as
Rhapsody.com and Pandora.

Works beautifully in this configuration.

Re: [slim] FLAC issues

2008-03-24 Thread Anne

Not entirely sure this is the same, but I filed a bug concerning static
noise on 24/96 flac with SB3 and SqueezeCenter. This worked perfectly
on SlimServer 6.5.3.
The problem is resolved, I am just waiting for an explanation.
Because I am not sure is because I do not use flac normally, all my
music is AppleLossless, and then a wav 24/44.1 download.
If searching under bugs you will see more bugs filed regarding this
noise on flac.

That has been my experience also.

With past releases there were usually one or two minor bugs which would
occasionally bother me. My 7.0 experience has been better than my
experience with any previous release. The web interface is much faster too
(although I use it a lot less now that I have my Duet!)

I'll check that out. Right now I've got it hard wired and it's working

[slim] More questions as I play with my Duet

2008-03-24 Thread wyzard

Good afternoon. Finally got my Duet up and running and am really
enjoying it!!

Have some questions is dig deeper into the functionality, etc.

1. Do you turn your receiver off when you aren't listening to your
Duet or do you just leave it on? I'm thinking you just leave the
remote on all the time and in the charger when you aren't using it to
control your music.

2. I'm working to get my album art up to snuff. I ripped my music
using iTunes and have it stored on my server. I'm putting album art in
the music folders and calling the files folder.jpg. My question.. Do I
need to do a rescan to get this to show up on the controller?

3. When I add music to my Music folder do I need to do a rescan with
SqueezeCenter to get it to show up?

4. Is there anyway to show what song will be playing next when looking
at the now playing screen?

Thanks for all the help to everyone.

Re: [slim] More questions as I play with my Duet

2008-03-24 Thread bklaas

1. I don't turn the controller off. I leave it in the cradle when not in
use. (I'm assuming you meant controller and not receiver in your
question)

2. Yes, and there is an artwork cache on the controller as well, so
after you rescan your collection you should probably reboot your
controller.

3. Yes. There is an option for just scanning for new/changed music,
which will be faster than a full rescan

4. Click on the center button and you will advance to the current
playlist window.

cheers,
#!/ben

Re: [slim] How to use MusicIP with Duet controller?

2008-03-24 Thread Siduhe

Jon/Zevs,

As one of the people who originally made the bug request for MIP
support with the SBC, here's a bit more background and a temporary
workaround.

MIP support was originally targetted for Squeezecenter 7.0 - that's
when it got the P4 (lowish) priority. However, there just wasn't time
to do everything requested, so it got moved to 7.0.1. However, it
isn't really a bug, but an enhancement request - 7.0.1 is supposed to
be about small, safe bug fixes.

As for when 7.1 will be started - the (not especially helpful answer)
is when enough of the bugs targetted for 7.0.1 are fixed. Now that MIP
support has been moved to 7.1, I'd very much like the priority to be
upped from P4 as I think it's a pretty glaring omission.

As for why MIP isn't a higher priority - I'm not really sure - but a
lot less people use it than Itunes for example. So, please vote for
the bug if you haven't already to give it maximum visibility.

Now for the workaround - install the Retro Browser applet (search the
wiki) onto the SB controller. It gives you the old style SB menu on
the Controller and you can press and hold to initiate a MusicIP mix
from there via the Controller.

Looks like we are shipping out to our distributors this week. JR and
Amazon will get their units by next week.

The rework of the misplaced battery stickers (some were on the wrong
side), and inserting the updated Quick Start Guide took the USDC longer
than expected. The USDC handles all of Logitech's hundreds of products,
while the guys in the back here that do our e-com business just handle
our Squeezebox and Transporter work.

Not to take anything away from our guys tho... they kicked some major
but and banged out almost 800 pre-oders and the required rework in like
two days.

[slim] Mac issues with Squeeze Center 7.0

2008-03-24 Thread jjcantab

First off, sorry if this already repeats discussions that other users
have had regarding the new server software.

Just writing to rant that installing SC 7.0 has not been easy, and
after fiddling (which I never had to do with prior versions) I gave up,
uninstalled it, and moved back to 6.5.4.

Have to say that I'm the proud owner of a Squeezebox -- have had it
nearly a year and am quite pleased with it. I keep my server software
on a Mac Mini that's about 3 yrs old but does the job.

My issues with SC 7.0:
(1) First the server wouldn't start properly. Had to come to these
forums to learn how to clear out the caches, prefs, etc.

(2) Server would start; upgraded firmware on Squeezebox.

(3) Building up the library again seemed to stall -- my library is
pretty big (ca. 1,800 albums, 20k songs), but it seemed to crap out
after about 30 albums and not continue building up the library.

(4) Looked like my old playlists were not showing up. In spite of the
deleting I did to get the SC 7.0 to start, the old playlists still
showed up when I installed 6.5.4.

The new interface seems nice -- like the ability to ffwd and rewind by
clicking on the graphic, which is good for long tracks, interviews,
etc.

If anyone has some suggestions on how to improve my mileage I'd
appreciate it. Otherwise I'd have to say that this release has
disappointed me because it didn't work, and I hope the developers take
notice. The beauty with Slimserver / Squeezebox has been that it just
works, and works well -- what's going on?

Some technical data that might be helpful: (after switching back to
trusty 6.5.4)

SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Mac OS X 10.4 (8A428) - EN - utf8

Thanks everyone.

in the above senario you must still have a Squeezenetwork account
(free)to connect to Rhapsody or Pandora. But just one other note on
these services, they seem to be going away for SB users out side of the
U.S.

But in the event you do own your music you could use the MP3Locker
service where you upload all you music the their server (secure from
others using it) and then just connect to that service via the
SqueezeNetwork.

I'm also a mac user and I had a very smooth transition from 6.5.4 to 7
so I'd guess it's a matter of clearing out all of the old slimserver
files and caches of slim and your web browser.

i'd advocate that you try to upgrade again because the improvements are
significant and it should work well on your mac.

good luck!

This I can certainly sympathize with. The fact is that there has been a
ton of changes under the hood which have been long needed (witness the
much improved syncing) and this kind of work rarely goes by without
teething problems. I understand a number of people have had issues with
the scanner since 7.0 (touch wood I have not!) but I agree that it's
annoying when things don't work right. The only thing I can advise is
to be vocal when you find issues, raise bugs and they will get fixed.

Re: [slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread jbuberel

While true that you do need a Squeezenetwork.com account to make those
services work, that was the single most important feature that led me
to purchase my Squeezebox:

The ability to selectively access and listen to any of the millions of
tracks offered by services such as Rhapsody and Pandora without even
having to turn on my computer.

That very capability, above all else, is what convinced me. Although
there have been a few (minor) technical glitches, the product does
deliver on that promise.

Re: [slim] How to use MusicIP with Duet controller?

2008-03-24 Thread jonstatt

 HTH

Thanks for the history. That makes a lot of sense and I really do hope
the priority gets raised (I have voted)...Thank you for the workaround
too! I will try it out.

Re: [slim] Help ... Internal Rhapsody Error

2008-03-24 Thread y360

That was a bug in their PC client. Sometimes the login starts to
permanently fail for what seems to be an unknown random reason.
Clearing IE cookies (via the browser or with a tool such as ccleaner
for example) usually resolves the login problem.
I doubt it has anything to do with Rhapsody Direct.

Squeezenetwork will soon support lastfm radio stations, which as far as
I know are unrestricted and available to non-US users as well.
Napster integration is also in the works, and should also be available
to users out of the US, at least in some European countries.

I hope SN gets more such integrated services and soon. It can be the
best trigger in driving higher SlimDevices hardware sales, much more
than whatever improvements can be made to the local PC-based server.

I also believe that Mr Sean Adams is aware of the great benefit of SN

See his quote from about one year ago:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=188907postcount=35

Besides not wanting to leave a computer on, the mass market user is
not too keen on installing software, ripping CDs, and taking the time
to organize a large collection but with Squeezenetwork you don't
need to do any of that. Personally I almost never access my own music
collection now that Rhapsody is available. The home server just becomes
a non issue.

[slim] No PC Standby after Squeeze Box Turned Off due to Quick Resume

2008-03-24 Thread sunset-squeeze

I had a problem with my PC not timing out to Standby after turning off
my Squeeze Box. I was able to solve this problem, and since I haven't
any other postings about this, here's what I found.

Re: [slim] How to get Artwork?

2008-03-24 Thread jsmathers

I also use a java script to save iTunes artwork to a file. Google for
iTunes COM SDK for more info. My script basically does the same as
andlauer's, but I added a few options you can set. The
bOptIgnoreBadArtworkComment option allows you to add a Don't use
iTunes artwork comment to the mp3 if the iTunes artwork is wrong or
low resolution and it won't save the artwork for that file. Of course
you could also just clear the bad downloaded artwork in iTunes, but
then you'll have to do this again if you ever rescan your iTunes
library. The other options are pretty self-explanatory.

Download the attached text file and rename it to
SaveItunesArtworkToFile.js. Make sure iTunes is open and
double-click the js file to run the script. Here is the code from the
script for reference...
-
// Script options
var bOptSaveEmbeddedArtwork = false;
var bOptIgnoreBadArtworkComment = false;

iTunesApp.LibrarySource.Playlists.ItemByName(Test).Tracks;

// NOTE: Instead of looking for Don't use iTunes artwork comment, can
also create smart playlist
//var tracks = iTunesApp.LibrarySource.Playlists.ItemByName(Use iTunes
Artwork).Tracks;

var numTracks = tracks.Count;
var currTrack;
var count = 0;
var fso = new ActiveXObject(Scripting.FileSystemObject);

[slim] Artists not showing right on some CDs

2008-03-24 Thread wyzard

Good afternoon.

I've got my Duet set up, everything's playing. Got my album art in
order.

One thing that I notice when I search by album... on some of the
albums, for example the Beatles 1 it list it as various artists on the
album screen on the controller. I've checked things out and I don't
see any issues, but yet it still stays that way. When it goes to the
now playing screen everything is fine.

Any thoughts. Any suggestions on a program to use to take a look a the
tags more closely.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread servies

timmerweb;283016 Wrote:
I'm really interested in getting a SqueezeBox, but its requirement for a
server is a deal-breaker for me, since I have no suitable desktop
computer to run the server on, nor do I wish to purchase a computer for
the sole purpose of running SqueezeCenter.

I notice that Sonos is able to access network shares directly from any
NAS device with no additional servers needing to be run, which is the
functionality I'm looking for. Too bad about the exorbitant price of
 it though. :(

So can you tell me where in your situation on what computer those
network shares are. Are you aware of the fact that those 'computers'
have to be always on...

There's 1 big difference between the Sonos solution and the slimdevices
solution.

Slimdevices:
musicserver - (wireless) router - squeezebox/transporter
Sonos:
musicserver - (wireless) router - sonos zonebridge - sonos
zoneplayers

Notice the difference in the router part. It used to be worse, the
zonebridge is a new product of Sonos. In the earlier days you needed a
zoneplayer to do the bridging...
In my situation I wanted a wireless solution, so Sonos never was an
option, I found it to be rediculous to need 2 zoneplayers if I wanted
wireless music in my livingroom, which isn't the place where my
musicserver is...
So the minimum requirements are
Slimdevices:
musicserver, router, squeezebox/transporter
Sonos:
musicserver, router, sonos zonebridge, sonos zoneplayer

My guess from the datasheets is that in every aspect the slimdevices
solution is cheaper, cheaper in purchase (ignoring the transporter),
cheaper in powerconsumption.

As earlier mentioned, a NAS is nothing more than a computer only
serving files. Just setup a cheap desktop computer to do the same and
you have enough computingpower to run slimserver and you're still
better of than with the Sonos solution, which isn't a bad system at
all, but a completely different solution.

[slim] Building Playlists

2008-03-24 Thread larrettp

A suggestion on the subject of Playlists. Will there EVER be a method of
creating Playlists 'offline' - in other words, without affecting the
list you are currently listening to? This would be an obvious function
as you don't necessarily want to listen to the list you are creating
(for a future party, for instance).

Building Playlists is also VERY time-consuming. I like to have large
Playlists shuffled by song (currently about 7500 songs). This takes
AGES. Since a Playlist is, to all intents and purposes just a list of
filenames, types and locations, why isn't this information stored and
indexed when the library is scanned (which takes ages in itself). What
is the point of the library scan if the locations are validated again
when the songs/albums are added to the Playlist.

Saving a Playlist also takes ages.

In fact these delays are the single biggest complaint of the entire
system. When it is working, it is very impressive but it takes far too
long to set up.

Any answers?

Re: [slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread jbuberel

Based on the fact that I rent access to my music collection via on-line
services, there is/was no need for a local file server:

Rhapsody.com/Pandora -- Squeezenetwork.com -- Internet + DSL --
Local WiFi -- SqueezeBox -- Home Audio System -- Speakers -- My
ears

That configuration gives me access to about 3 million tracks, none of
which are stored locally. Although I do have desktop PCs at home that
could serve files on the local network, I have chosen to not do so.
