Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 + Apple Time Capsule + Wireless = no love?

2008-04-16 Thread milesbeverley

to limit the variables when testing i have only tried a few songs. the
stuttering can occur within 10 seconds however when i use the faad app
it normally takes longer to stutter and the stuttering isnt so bad as
it was originally.

this morning i tried again abd the stuttering was back. i stopped the
tune and moved the airport express near to the logitech receiver. the
song seemed to play without stuttering. while playing the song i turned
off the airport express and no stuttering occurred. it could be
coincendence or it could be the buffer playing out. i will probably
need to test it more. the faad solution definitely helped but it may
need a combination of fixes for it to work.

Re: [slim] Building Playlists

2008-04-16 Thread larrettp

I've also spotted in the documentation that several 'many-to-many'
tables are created and maintained. These are an enormous I/O overhead
and, if they are not indexed, will give exactly the performance log-jam
we are experiencing.

Basically, the bigger the library, the longer each operation will take
as the program has to do a table-scan every time.

I would strongly suggest removing the 'many-to-many' tables and all the
associated creation and maintenance and applying indexes to the main
tables. Then MySQL can take care of I/O in a far more efficient and
much faster way.

Try running an EXPLAIN on some of the SQL statements before and after
Indexing. You should see a HUGE difference.

Then I reinstalled 7.0.1, did a complete rescan, looked for a song with

connected to my ubunutu-machine via samba). The mp3 file is ok, but

Let me recapitulate this... you have an external USB disk (fat32?) connected to
your linux box, shared using Samba, sharing the iTunes.xml file? There are
things we shouldn't allow :-).

also all other files are now playing! Please don´t ask me why, I have
 changed nothing else.

You mean even the lossless m4a files would now play with iTunes integration?

Now the following error messages appear in the server.log:

Does playing m4a work at all? This is telling us that it tried to transcode
from mov (m4a) to mp3 (why not flac? Are you using bitrate limiting?). Is this
transcoding enabled in the server settings?

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-16 Thread Armand

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thought my previous posts unfortunatelly did't result in any answers
yet, I'll give it another shot.
My controller will not connect to my pc / Sqeezecenterserver . It will
not connect at all, not just interuptions, it simply does not connect.

After (yet another) factory reset I was able to connect to
Sqeezenetwork, in which everything works fine, but connecting to my pc
/ Sqeezecenterserver afterwards failed.
Connecting to my pc / Sqeezecenterserver after a factory reset doesn't
work: Problem Connecting; couldn't connect your Squeezebox to your
wireless network.

It doesn't make sense to me since:
- I can see the controller in the DHCP client list;
- I can connect to the controller throught SSH / putty
- The controller first finds my wireless network, then finds the
receiver and connects to my network (The Squeezebox is connected to
your network)
- My receiver and two other classic SqueezeBoxes work fine

I tried changing the Belin router's congfiguration (SSID channel,
switching 64 and 128 WEP, etc.)

Can anyone please give me some suggestions?

Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!

Whats the best way of adding navigation links amongst a group of pages
(eg the BeginnersGuide, or Plugins)?

In the old wiki there was the (admittedly very crude) list of backlinks
on the left, which made it easy to get back to parent or related
pages.

Is there a way of adding navigation links on the left, locally to a
page? Or is there a recommended style for adding navigation links at,
say, the top of a page?

It doesn't matter where you put them on your PC, you need to do the
following to change the backgrounds on your controller.

1. Extract the JiveExtras.zip in this thread to your Squeezecenter
plugins folder on your PC.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44675

2. In Squeezecenter go to Settings, then Plugins and ensure that
customize controller is enabled (you might need to close and restart
Squeezecenter first to see this).

3. Click on settings for that plugin and then simply click Browse and
add your chosen pictures in there. After a short delay they will then
be available to select on the controller with all of the existing
backgrounds.

Ive had my Duet/Receiver for nearly a month now but havent managed to
get it usable ( Thank God the SB3 works flawlessly ) . When I do get
them to appear on SC the wireless crashes and the SB3 loses its
settings so I just leave them largely unused for now as the crashes
create problems while ripping .

Equipment : Duet/Receiver , SB3 , Dell Inspiron laptop , HP MediaSmart
Server with SC 7 installed , Netopia Cayman router 3347w .

Server is in an upstairs bedroom with the router , SB3 is in the living
room working flawlessly after being given a static IP . The Duet
Receiver after many different experiments is wired direct to router
and connects ( eventually ) , Duet Controller only works with it if in
the same room . It has yet to finish 'Copying Update' properly and the
whole system crashes in minutes .

Disconnect the Duet duo and reboot and evrything works perfectly with
absolutely no crashes .

Baffled and disappointed and waiting on a breakthrough :O)

I'm thinking that the DTV device wants to act like a PoE switch,
probably for some future application that they have in mind. From
what I read about PoE, there is an initial voltage of 2-10v used to
sense whether it's OK to turn on the 48v; I'm guessing the 5v is for
that purpose.
I did connect the DTV box to an old hub with one working port (and now
heading to the trash...), the link came up fine with no apparent damage

Yeah, it's not under plugins. Tricky tricky!!

In SqueezeCenter's Settings Panel, you'll go to : Advanced

Then in the drop down (That by default has Formatting selected)
you'll choose Customize Controller

Then add your backgrounds. Within a few minutes, the backgrounds appear
in your controllers list- it seems without any other work- no other
restarts neccessary.

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-16 Thread Nonreality

approach actually has some benefits, since it frees tag BAND to be

 complex tagging.
Exactly. That is the correct solution - tag things properly. It
doesn't take long to open your whole music collection in mp3tag, and
make it copy the content of TPE2 (BAND) into TXXX ALBUMARTIST. Rescan
 SqueezeCenter.

Problem solved. No frigs, no hacking around in the source code. It
won't break other rubbish applications that misuse BAND as ALBUMARTIST,
so you can continue to use iTunes and WinAmp, but as a bonus
SqueezeCenter will work as you expect, and FooBar will too.

 Phil

Man you are one of those again. Anyway where was I? Oh yes a question
for you. You said that one of the problems is that there is no standard
for albumartist in the mp3 standards.

There's just confusion over album artist for mp3 tracks due to a
lack of a standard tag for storing it in id3v2.3 tags. Quite a lot of
applications use Band, and report it as album artist, which just makes
things very confusing for novices that want to use their music across
different applications.

If this is correct, and I assume it is as you have said it, then why
are you insisting that using band tag as album artist for the lead band
of an album is the wrong way? Most programs have accepted this as the
standard for representing the lead band. And before you look down and
talk down to me from your lofty tower of music knowledge, I'd like you
to know that I didn't have to read all of this thread to know that I
was using band as album artist. I did it on purpose, imagine that.
Incorrigible...yes, ignorant...no. Most programs use it and I surmised
that it was the best way to go to be compatible. So in my mind my tags
are correct, maybe not for you, maybe not for SB but right for most
programs. I would like to know why you think yours is the standard for
mp3 implementing if there is no standard. If I'm going to change mine
I'd like to make sure it's needed and if SB is planning on an option
for people like me before I add another tag to everything. Oh one more
thing, if you've already answered all this somewhere else, in these
forums, in some other forum, a letter to a fan and it would put you out
too much to answer here, just don't answer and I'll be fine. It will
hurt, but really I'll be fine.

PS: So you consider Mediamonkey and dbpoweramp as rubbish applications?
You're going to lose me as fan if you keep this up Phil.

Re: [slim] best stand-alone seakers to connect a SB3 to?

2008-04-16 Thread joeriz

I have the Audioengine A2's and like them a lot. I will say, however,
that they can be boomy if not set up properly. As someone else
mentioned, they need to be acoustically isolated to perform their best.
Keep them as far away from rear walls as possible and try not to sit
them directly on a shelf without some isolation under them or the shelf
is going to act as a sounding board. I have mine on little dabs of
BluTak which in turn sit on little felt pads that I had laying around
(from Home Depot) so as to protect the shelf.

Also, another thing to try - which I find works quite well - is the
Inguz EQ plugin. As I have the A2's set up in my living room, I have
an Inguz preset called (oddly enough) 'living room' that provides a
slight rolloff in the bass. I simply leave that preset on all the time
for the SB in the living room. Works beautifully...

So, to help out with sorting this issue, here is another point.

Composer don't show on artist list even if it is ticked off in
'Composer, Band and Orchestra in Artists' setting. It would show for
non compilation albums, but not for compilations regardless of wether
all tracks are marked with the same composer or not. That is contrary
to information for that option that reads: 'Song information about
composers, bands and orchestras can be included in the artists list for
browsing and search.'

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-16 Thread Phil Meyer
if I have an
album with multiple track artists and a single album artist who doesn't
appear on any other album, no amount of option or tag tweaking will get
that album artist into the artist list *without* getting the track
artists in there as well (I call this the Lee Perry or Larry Levan
problem :)).

Hmmm, interesting - it works for me.

Eg. A single album by album artist=Alio Die Saffron Wood, has two track
artists: Alio Die, Saffron Wood.

Alio Die Saffron Wood appears in the browse artists list. I haven't got

Re: [slim] Hard limit on amount of players?

You will never run out of licences it's all down to network and server
performance.

I have to say, you must have quite a setup if youa re running 16
players! I'm a little envious :)

I'm pretty sure the team in Mountainview have run dozens on players at
the same time in the past. Partly to see what would happen and partly
just because they could :D

After (yet another) factory reset I was able to connect to
Sqeezenetwork, in which everything works fine, but connecting to my pc
 / Sqeezecenterserver afterwards failed.
Connecting to my pc / Sqeezecenterserver after a factory reset doesn't
work: Problem Connecting; couldn't connect your Squeezebox to your
 wireless network.

It doesn't make sense to me since:
 - I can see the controller in the DHCP client list;

The Controller is connected to your wireless network in the same way,
regardless of the music source. The connection, assignment of IP
address, etc., all occur well before there's an attempt made to find a
music source.

If the Controller connects SN and configures the Receiver properly,
then the Controller is working. Connecting to SN means that your
network is configuring the Controller correctly, and is routing packets
to/from the internet to the Controller correctly. This is good.

Not finding a local SqueezeCenter can mean any of the following:

- You don't actually have SqueezeCenter 7.0.0 (or higher) running on
a computer on your network. Make sure SC is running and, if
possible, connect to it from a different computer on your network by
opening a web browser and entering
  http://-IP_address_of_computer_running_SC-:9000. If the
SqueezeCenter interface opens up, then SC is running and available on
your network (at least to that computer). Double-check the version
number by checking the Status tab under Settings.

- One (or more!) software firewalls are blocking the routing of
packets to/from the Controller to the computer running SC. Try
disabling (as a test!) the firewall and see if you can connect. Be
sure to double-check that ALL firewalls are turned off (you might be
surprised how many people are running the built-in Windows Firewall
-and- a third-party firewall like Zone Alarm Pro, or Norton Internet
Security. If you are able to connect, then you'll need to open the
firewall for access (see the Squeezebox Duet Uder Guide for
  instructions).

- The Controller is not on the same network segment as the computer
running SqueezeCenter. Check the IP address for the computer and
compare it to the IP address for the Controller. They should be very
similar (eg., 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.106). If they aren't
similar, they may not be on the same network segment which means
there may not be a route for the data to travel. If this is the
case, you'll need to post details about your network set up here
(what's connected to what, as in: switch connected to wireless
router, PC connected to switch with ethernet cable, Controller and
Receiver connected to wireless router). We can try to help you
figure out what's happening from that information.

In general, this is stuff our technical support team is really well
qualified to help you with... you really should consider contacting
them.

It may support it already. DBI modules exist for PostgreSQL. It may be
as simple as installing the modules, creating a schema in PostgreSQL
with the right user permissions and then modifying the server.prefs to
use that db. You might try doing some experimenting and let us know

of 80%+ at the SB3. But since the upgrade the signal strength seems to
wander up and down over time, averages maybe 50-60% and fluctuates up
to 70+ and down to 20 something. I can't imagine how the SC software /

 has changed somewhere.

I don't *think* there were significant changes to the networking code
on the SB3, but I'm not a software guy so I can't be 100% sure of
that.

Is it possible that a neighbor just added a wireless network that uses
the same channel as yours? That could cause problems with your
network, without you ever having made a single change. If the SB3 is
closer neighbor's router than to yours (this does happen: my
Transporter is closer to my neighbor's router than mine), it very
likely could cause a change in signal strength.

Any other possible changes to the radio environment? Did you add a new

[slim] Duet - change receiver name

I just bought a Duet combo to go with my existing Squeezebox. By

Here's a slightly updated plugin for this. With tomorrow's nightly

SqueezeCenter does not need to store the images itself, it just stores
the url and the remote gets them direct.

It is easy for me to believe because the proper place to do that is in
the scanner when the db is built (specifically in MP3.pm).

That section of code is used only for display, and well after the DB
 has been loaded.

Again, it does not make sense to infer the intent from the current
state of the code implementing this preference. All the scanning and
db code has been completely rewritten at least once since it was
originally implemented. I traced the code back in svn history a bit
but at some point I think it was moved to Slim/Schema/Album.pm from
another file but svn log just gives me an error probably because I
have not fixed my working directories since the svn reorg a while
back.

Also, as has been pointed out by others, the proper place to do what
has been requested is not in the scanner, because you don't want to
force a rescan when changing the option. It's possible the
implementer thought adding some logic in the display code was
sufficient and other bits have been lost in the shuffle. It might
even have been prior to the introduction of the TRACKARTIST
contributor role which I think changed some things.

Anyway, while I do think SC should support the interpretation of TPE2
which some other programs use, I really don't care enough about this
anymore to keep tracking this thread, as I will happily use the TXX

Test it wired before doing anything else. If it behaves fine wired,
then chances are it's fine and at the very worst its wireless network

My guess is one of your neighbors just got a new draft-N router and is
clobbering your network. Computers can cope with surprisingly spotty
wireless connections, but SB3s do not. Use NetStumbler to find out

Please do swap them over again and let us know what you find.

Thanks, Jim; I was planning to add more anyway...

Tonight we tried the players in their swapped locations whilst
preparing dinner; all went well until we turned on the microwave, at
which point both stopped dead. Not too surprising, I guess. Once we
were finished with the m'wave we tried again; it took a couple of false
(stuttery) starts, but then worked fine. (The washing machine didn't
seem to affect them.)

Some time later, I swapped the units over. Within a few tracks, they
started stuttering again (well, to be precise, the SB3 played up - I
wasn't in a position to check the SBC). The SB3 even showed the
rebuffering... message, which I rarely see. At this point, since I
actually wanted to listen rather than fault-trace, I turned off sync.
The SB3 has been working fine since.

This experience supports the idea that my SBR may be more touchy than
my SB3; but it's far from conclusive.

My laptop (in the same room as the SB3) reports no other networks
nearby. SqueezeCenter reports signal strengths of 66 (SB3) and 58 (SBC)
at the moment, but this is some time after the sync problems.

(Just had a weird moment there, where SqueezeCenter was reporting very
low signal on the SBC (36 or less), but the Controller said 53; but the
SBC was paused, and once I started playing something, SC started to look
better.)

Those signal strengths aren't very good. I can't blame the central
heating, as it's not on. The only things on in the kitchen at the
moment are the fluorescent tube (hmm?) and the fridge on which the SBC
sits (h...) I can't rule out the possibility of interference from
the neighbours, but it's a bit unlikely at this time of night. Right
now, even the laptop is claiming a lower-than-usual speed (36Mbps).

Maybe it's time to check out my router; it gets power-cycled each
night, but hasn't had a firmware upgrade for a while.

I don't suppose there are any known issues with the LinkSys WRT54G
router... ?

It's all a bit frustrating... I bought the SBC mainly to use in sync
with my SB3, but this doesn't seem to be working reliably. I doubt
that it's the units themselves, or the server; more likely it's poor
signal or too much noise. But I'm running out of options - moving the
router, or wiring-up one or both units would not be practical. (I guess
I should add that the router is upstairs, and the server is wired to
it.) I could try swapping the SB3/SBR round again, but that's not ideal
either.

Yes it is.

The problem with changing the name isn't though...now you've been able

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-16 Thread Phil Meyer
Also, as has been pointed out by others, the proper place to do what
has been requested is not in the scanner, because you don't want to
force a rescan when changing the option.

I think it should be an option appropriate only to the scanner. I believe we
are NOT saying that any scanned Band contributor should be considered as an
album artist, but only when interpretting ID3v2.3 tags (eg so that TPE2 would
mean album artist). Better formats, such as OGG, have support for both band
and album artist tags as part of the defined standard.

I don't think anyone has seen the need for a contributor role of band to be
seen as album artist, but for a band tag to be read as album artist. There's a
difference.

I don't think it's a big deal that if an option for how the scanner would
translate tags were to be changed, that a rescan would be required. I would
assume that a user would set the option that they want as a one-off and stick
with it forever. eg. I would never want to translate TPE2 to album artist, as
I want to see band contributors, and I already have album artist tags.
However, other people who are more accustomed to iTunes for example, may never
have proper band contributors and use the TPE2 tag for album artist. They are
unlikely to change the option for scanning too.

I would hope that such a scanner option would be set automatically by the
installation wizard, e.g. if the user indicates that he uses iTunes, etc. For
existing users, they'd have to choose the right option and rescan - a one-off
change that they are unlikely to need to do ever again.

There are other benefits; the change to implement within the scanner would be a
lot easier than the potential rework to SqueezeCenter to dynamically work out
how to group by album artist and what artists to list. Also, performance may
be worse if it has to work out album artist groupings dynamically all the time.

Have you had any further thoughts on our previous discussion about all
the outdated (and just plain wrong) info in the wiki? As I mentioned
before, it has gotten especially bad since 7.0 was released and there's
still a lot of old info around that hasn't been updated or removed. I
understand that we can all just jump in and start fixing these things,
but it seems like some sort of organized triage would be useful. Maybe
just a way for users to tag pages that they think are incorrect (I think
wikipedia does this) and then an easy way for others to view an index of
 these possibly bad pages.

Now that I've had a chance to muck about a bit, I think the right thing
to do is to add a category tag of Edit Needed. It would look like
this:

Code:

[[Category:Edit Needed]]

Then I'll link that to the Under Construction page as a reference for
editors to follow.

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-16 Thread Phil Meyer
The one thing I'm conflicted over is that if I do have another real
album by an artist that is a track artist of a single song on an album
I'm using an album artist on, that album shows up with the track
artist's other albums as an album of one song.

Sometimes I think I don't want it to appear at all, but mostly I'd
rather it appear as the complete album. I really don't like how SC
sometimes will represent a subset of an album as if it were an album.

Yes, I pondered on that myself once.

However, I came to the conclusion that the current functionality is the best
option. I actually like the fact that when I browse to an artist it shows all
albums that the artist has contributed on, and only songs by that artist are
listed when I click on an album. I can always see all songs on the album by
clicking on the album name. If it were to always show all songs, and I had
boxed set compilation album of hundreds of songs, I'd be hunting around for a
single song by the artist I'd chosen with no easy way of filtering it down.
Also, would you want to chose and artist and hit play all and get all songs by
the artist, or all songs on all albums where the artist appears at least once?

One thing I just noticed doing the hardware overview is that some of the
product specific pages have pretty long names. For example, hotlinking
the word Squeezebox is going to be a pretty common requirement - but
it needs this mouthful :

Code:

  Everyone loves a [[Squeezebox3rdGeneration|Squeezebox]]

Any way we can make that a little easier? I'm assuming the reason
SqueezeBox was used so much in the old wiki was due to auto-linking of
camel case words.

Also - would be good to make the formatting help link go somewhere
(even if it's just

Another vote for the Acoustic Energy AEGO-M. Sensible sized subwoofer +
two *tiny* (but heavy!) mid+HF speakers. 90W RMS. Truly amazing sound
from such a small speaker system - hearing is believing.

I was sceptical, but have now replaced a pair of Monitor Audio Silver
S6s with the AEGO-Ms for reasons of space [Aside: they've only moved to
another room. I have two pairs of the Monitor Audios].

The sound quality of the AEGO-M is most definitely acceptable. I paid
approx GBP 90 from Amazon UK in Feb 08, but the price seems to vary
from week to week...

Kind regards

Re: [slim] Playing cd's

2008-04-16 Thread bpa

Attached is an beta version of enhanced CDplayer for testing.

The main differences are
1. Support for platforms which run cdda2wav - Windows XP and many
Linux. Mac/OSX needs some more effort to get cdd2wav to work. Not
tested with Vista but should be OK.
2. Album content is identified using MusicBrainz. Album, track and
artist info is displayed in menus and as track is played.

The intent behind this plugin is to provide a basic facility to play
audio CD on a PC cdrom/dvd drive through SqueezeCenter. There are
limitations because the CDDA2WAV app is intended for ripping rather
than playing in real time so occassionally there will be gaps -
depending on whether CD is spinning up/.down and buffer of the CDROM
drive.

Basic Operation.

Once Installed - there will be a CDplayer menu in Extras on WebUI, SB
and SBC. Click on CDplayer menu and you will get 1,2 or more menu
items.

There will always be a CD Tracks - raw format entry. This menu has an
entry for each track - the tracks are numbered. If Album cannot be
identified then there will only be the raw entry. Occassionally an
album will be wrongly identified so user can use raw entry to play
track without showing incorrect info.

Occassionally there will be two or more records associated with an
Album id - all matching records will be shown.

There is a setting to change operation of Pause to Stop within
CDplayer. This is because I am not sure what happens if a playing CD
audio stream is paused so I think stop may be better for CD drive.

There are two version of the plugin - Windows and Linux, so there are
separate installation instructions.

Windows.
1. Stop SC
2. Download a Zip file from
http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/CDplayer1beta.zip
3. Unzip the zipped file into server/Plugins so that you have a
server/Plugins/CDplayer
4. Replacing socketwrappers help minimise stray processes left behind
by cdda2wav. Following steps are optional.
4a.Download and extract sockwetwrapper.exe (v1.11b) from zip at this
location
http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/socketwrapper111b.zip
4b. Rename existing socketwrapper.exe in C:\Program
Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread directory so
that you can revert if necessary.
4c. copy the downloaded socketwrapper.exe into the C:\Program
Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread directory
5. Start SqueezeCenter - check in Settings there is a Plugin called
CDplayer and in Advanced/FileTypes there should be an entry CD Player
enabled to use cdda2wav.
6. Put CD in drive and test.

Linux.
1. Stop SC
2. Download the tar.gz file attached to this post.
3. Install cdda2wav from the repository for your distro.
4. Untar the tar.gz file into server/Plugins such that you have a
directoru server/Plugins/CDplayer
5. Start SqueezeCenter - check in Settings there is a Plugin called
CDplayer and in Advanced/FileTypes there should be an entry CD Player
enabled to use cdda2wav.
6. Put CD in drive and test.

I agree with greg and will add the following comments.
The most users of computer stored and served music are iPod owners.
iTunes allows the entry of Album Artist when ripping and in the iTunes
GUI it can be used as a sort item.
When an iTunes user fires up SC GUI he/she quickly discovers that the
Album Artist column is not available (there have been numerous posts
about this), I have only seen one contributor to this thread mentioning
the iTunes use of this tag.
Many contributors to this forum decry iTunes for a lot of valid and
some not so valid reasons, but iTunes users are where Logitech's mass
market is. So, JimC, get SC to handle Album Artist in a similar manner
to iTunes and you will improve the marketability of SC.

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags

2008-04-16 Thread Phil Meyer
If this is correct, and I assume it is as you have said it, then why
are you insisting that using band tag as album artist for the lead band
of an album is the wrong way?

I am not really saying it is the wrong way, just not the right way for
SlimServer/SqueezeCenter, which has never supported it that way (intentionally
it appears).

I asked a few questions when I first joined this community to get album artist
working. I entered the required tags, as required for SlimServer to function
as I wanted, and I'd had very little problems since. I've responded to many
calls for help in tagging to get SC to work correctly.

I have subsequently hacked some of my mp3 albums to copy the album artist in
the band tag, just to satisfy iTunes when I need to use that for syncing to an
iPod.

I guess I'm just a bit frustrated that this keeps coming up. People point
blank insist that their tags are right, even when told the reason, etc. They
insistn that the really do have album artist set, and that SqueezeCenter is not
working because their tags are perfect.

Most programs have accepted this as the
standard for representing the lead band.
No, most programs have misused the TPE2 tag for storing band. Other conformant
apps suffer as a result.

I believe most people with classical music collections use Band for storing the
orchestra, because there isn't a specific orchestra tag. That's a mis-use of
the tag to some degree, but it isn't a mis-use of functionality. Album artist
is for grouping, whereas a contributor role is just someone that performs on a
song.

Most programs use it and I surmised that it was the best way to go to be
compatible.
SqueezeCenter in it's current form is not compatible.

I think it's fine to set band to work as album artist for other applications.
I also think it's absolutely correct for SC to be updated to support (as an
option) this alternative way of working. If an option is added in SC to
support it, it would also seem reasonable to then turn off Band as a
contributor role in SqueezeCenter (don't report album artist and band, because
the album artist would then not be a band).

I would like to know why you think yours is the standard for
mp3 implementing if there is no standard.
There is a standard. TPE2 means Band.

If I'm going to change mine
I'd like to make sure it's needed and if SB is planning on an option
for people like me before I add another tag to everything.
I would assume that some good developer folks will find some nice option to get
BAND working as ALBUMARTIST. It may take a while, so if you want your library
fixed soon, you're best off adding a specific ALBUMARTIST tag. It won't affect
how other apps interpret your music collection from your tags. If later you
decide to use an SC option to use BAND as ALBUMARTIST, you shouldn't need to do
any retagging either.

PS: So you consider Mediamonkey and dbpoweramp as rubbish applications?

iTunes is definitely rubbish. Unfortunately I still use it, but as little as
possible. Not sure I've ever used MediaMonkey, but I've read other forum posts,
and it does seem to make assumptions about how tagging should be done.
dbPowerAmp is not bad I think. I only use the converter tool, which is quite
good.

Mp3tag does everything I need from a tagger and more, so I stopped looking for
other apps. I also use FooBar for playing music, which is a good app too.

To add a Txxx ALBUMARTIST tag in Mp3tag:
select some songs, go to Extended Tags dialog, enter field ALBUMARTIST
and enter the artist as the value.
You can also configure that to come up as a column in the grid, and as a field
in the Tag Panel.
You can create an action to copy the BAND tag value into ALBUMARTIST. Then
select all music and run the action to do your whole collection in one go.

So I'm sorry if I've been a bit vocal. I'll back off now and see what happens.
I've tried to explain why people's tags don't work, and what to do to get it
working really well in SqueezeCenter now, with minimal fuss.

[slim] Unorthodox behavior

2008-04-16 Thread mmduf

I've had the SB3 for a couple of months and it's been working great. But
since upgrading to SC7, when I try to switch between Squeezecenter and
Squeezenetwork, the unit begins to log off of one, then instead of
logging into the other, it just turns itself off, like someone had hit
the off switch. So I have to turn it back on and then I can make the
switch.

Also, some albums are beginning to show duplicate tracks. I don't have
any duplicate albums, just tracks within certain albums. I'm pretty
anal about my tags, and I don't see anything there that can be causing
this. I went into the folder that contains the mp3's and deleted the
dupes, and cleared and rescanned the library, but they reappeared.

I installed 7.0.1, hoping this was some bug it would fix, but it still
happens. I'm using XP and iTunes as my server.

I'm hoping someone can give me a non-technical answer on this.
