[slim] SqueezePlay URL accepts only IP, not name?

2009-01-08 Thread .brum

Hi,

I tried to get the new SqueezePlay to work from my office the other
day, wanting to listen remotely with it. In the settings I couldn't,
however, find a way to enter a URL by a domain name, instead of IP
numbers.

I'd guess most of us have an ISP that provide only dynamic IPs, and
people use DNS service providers to get a static domain name to the
ever changing IP. Therefore it would be useful to be able to enter a
name based address. Or learn how to do it, if that is already possible
:).

Rgds,

.brum

Re: [slim] Multi-room listening

2009-01-08 Thread SoulSurvivor

Hi there,

You should be able to do it in part.
I have a Denon AVR-1909, which has a feature where you can wire a 2nd
pair of speakers for use in a 2nd room. You can switch between the two
sets of speakers from the Denon remote. It cant, however, do 3 rooms
and i cant think of an amp/receiver which can do 3 rooms, although i
haven't researched it.

So, you can have your SB3 and Denon receiver in living room, wire up
your 2nd set of speakers. Then assuming you have a Duet Controller,
you can select your tunes from the loft.

Good luck.

Start with the technical idea of HOW to do this.
The SC paradigm is that the server controls the player, the UPnP
paradigm is that the player or a control point controls the player
which pulls it's data from the server.

The SC paradigm is more powerful but hard to adopt with any UPnP
player, SC simply would not add value to these.

[slim] Synchronised player randomly stop playing

2009-01-08 Thread ModelCitizen

When my players are synchronised I often find that they will all stop
playing simultaneously, usually at the end of a track in mid-playlist.

This does not happen when players are not synchronised.

Is there a bug for this (if so, I can't find it)?

Note that the forEach construct is very expensive, and generally

I attached the new stylesheet, as well as some python code to do the
 transform.
I think that you should consider doing the transform server-side,
instead of sending the xml to the browser with a stylesheet reference -
not all browsers handle that well. The only issue here is that you have
to install libxml2, and I'm not sure if that's available on Windows or
 not...

As far as the actual output, I think it might be a good idea to put out
divs instead of tables, and put css classes on the divs. That way, you
could skin it using css, and provide different css according to the
 user's choice.
I'll work on that as I can over the next couple of days.

Thanks for that. This stylesheet was done pure to ensure that the data was
there and could be used via XSLT. It's by no means indicative of the actual
output I want.

As I said, my knowledge of XSLT is *very* limited, and when I started the
project a year or so ago I did ask for help on that side of things. I'd be
more than happy for you (or indeed a group of people) to 'take the reins' on
the XSLT side while I concentrate on the retrieval script.

Thanks for the input.

[slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2009-01-08 Thread Robin Bowes
Hi all,

Net::UDAP is a Perl module to configure the SqueezeBox Receiver (SBR)
from a PC, i.e. without requiring a SqueezeBox Controller (SBC).

The project homepage is here:

http://projects.robinbowes.com/Net-UDAP

Net::UDAP was originally released in June 2008 and there have been no
significant changes since then. However, I've recently updated the
documentation so thought I'd post this announcement in case anyone tried
it previously but got stuck for whatever reason.

I've also fixed the registration system on the website so it is now
possible to register, login, and create support tickets. You could even
go completely crazy and add/improve the doucmenation by editing the wiki!

Net::UDAP is free software, but allow me to draw your attention to my
Paypal donnation link:

Enjoy!

the idea of a dock because it could be used as a charger while the SBC
is in there. For the first time I actually ran my SBC all the way down

a dock or a charger would have helped.

I half way agree with you. I think the SBC makes a good playback
device as long as you are using a set of powered speakers or less in
quality. In other words. there's not much difference between listening
to an SBC or a SBR over a set of powered speakers. Since that's all I
have down stairs where I workout, I find the SBC perfect for there.
I've moved the SBR to other places. Of course I also use the SBC when
walking the dog, etc.. I don't have any issue with reliability of the
SBC or sound quality through powered speakers or ear buds/head phones.
Ever since using SC 7.3 beta I have always noted the stable updates and
related SBC firmware so that if a stinker comes out I can fall back.

Back to the point though, anywwhere where I might use a less expensive
audio set up, I wouldn't hesitate to use a docking device and the SBC.
The garage, basement or in the back yard are ideal for me.

[slim] Apple aiport Express to Squeezebox through Ethernet

2009-01-08 Thread musicman159

I bought an Aiport Express to try to extend my Linksys network but it
does not work with it as an extender uless I use a third party software
in the Linksys.

The reason to extend my network is becuase my second SB (original
version)is in my bedroom and is just getting 68% of signal even with my
500mV booster at the router and the 9db gain antennas everywhere.

Now I am going in a different route. I am going to replece the linksys
with an Airport Etreme as a router. Since it can use both g and n I
was thinking in use the advantage of the bigger coverage of n and use
the AP express at the bedroom to received the n signal and send it to
the SB using the Ethernet connection.

I tried the ethernet connection with g at my living room SB where it
gets 92% signal but the sound is extremely choppy, it constantly cut
out and comes back.

Does anybody know why? and how to fix it?

I have Squeezeboxes at fixed locations.
A SB always beats the controller in terms of audio playback in those
 locations, quality and reliability wise.

What locations? - I don't need Hi-Fi when I work in my garage a couple
of hours a month (just an example)!
I know a SB is better, but the controller is much more flexible if
you don't just sit and listen and I don't think using it as a walkman
with headphones works - I would much prefer to take it with me and dump
it in a dock nearby.

Besides, a SB Boom costs 5 times as much as a cheap set of iPod
speakers. For the places I would put a dock, I would never even dream
of spending that much - the frequency of use and the demands for
quality just doesn't justify the investment!

It shouldn't be that hard, no development work is needed, they just

Re: [slim] Multi-room listening

2009-01-08 Thread badbob

What about a six channel poweramp, using the variable output from the
SB's as the volume control? Rotel made a 60W x 6 poweramp for about
£600 a while ago. That works if you want three multi-room systems - one
SB3 per room and for each stereo use of the amp, but if you want to
control each room seperatly you can't. Unless you split the SB3 for all
six channels, so as you increase the SB3 it'll adjust all three rooms at
the same time. I don't think using a Y splitter to three cables is a
good idea you may need a multi-way switch.

Does anyone have an Pre-Amp/Amplifier/Receiver (and/or Power Speakers)
 Suggestion?

 Thanks
Can you run speaker cable through the walls and make holes for
wall-mounted volume controls, or do you need a more non-invasive
installation? If you can tear into things, then a hefty amp and 3
impedence-matching in-wall volume controls would be a good way to go.
The amp can be a multi-room amp that specifically supports 3 pairs of
speakers, or you could use a conventional amp and wire the speakers in
series, paying careful attention to the load/impedence that the amp
will support.

How far apart are the rooms? A potential problem with powered speakers
is that they will typically get a line-level output from the SB to the
speaker. Ordinary line level is unbalanced, and if you run line level
cable any distance you have a high probability of picking up
interference, usually a humming sound. You could possibly avoid the
interference with properly shieled cables, or use baluns to transfer
the line level signal over balanced cable like cat5.

For mobility or odd locations where I don't have a SB (or just for
private listening so as not to disturb anyone else) I find I get better
quality by pumping an SBR through a set of Sennheiser wireless

[slim] Need New Wireless Router

2009-01-08 Thread mewzshn

My wireless router (Linksys WRT54GS) seems to have hit bottom - I'm
having to reset it multiple times a day just to get internet. The old
one has 2 antennae which I replaced with ugly longer ones and my
wireless coverage was not great but OK much of the time. I decided to
try a range extender, and being the cheapskate that I am, bought a
Belkin for $39. I have 3 squeezeboxes and the furthest one (which of
course is in the music room with the best equipment) went from signal
strength of around 32% to the mid 40's.

To make a long story shorter, I replaced it with a Linksys WRT100
Rangeplus, expecting wonderful things and my signal strength has gone
DOWN to about 15%. The new router has internal antennae, so I can't use
my big ugly extensions and I have not connected the Belkin extender.

I'm interested in how others have solved similar problems. Do SB's
work better with some routers than others, and have any of you found
one router or configuration to deal with walls better than others?

Thanks

 Either are highly recommended.

And as a side note: many if not most router manufacturers suck at
updating their firmware.

It is easier and cheaper for them to tell you to buy a new one.
Combine this with the very low resources of a typical router, and
things like a memory leak can be cripple you eventually. (The router
will run out of memory for connection tracking, which it needs for
address translation.)

My POS router worked fine until I hid a web server behind it, then it
died every few minutes. My Mother-in-laws router stays up for months.
unless she has company staying with her, when it will die every day or
two.

(When routers die, they tend to die in bizarre ways.. I could ssh from
work to a machine at home just fine.. but I couldn't ssh from home to
work... and I couldn't even bring up the router's web page to reboot
it, it would drop half the packets.)

The WRT54G series is very highly respected, but part of that may be the
success of DD-WRT.

Do you find the product 'ready for prime time' or is it something that
needs to be coddled and tweaked to function properly. The more I
research these Network Media Tank options the more I come across
comments of units that just stop working, movies that don't play
properly, units stuck in boot cycles, etc. I realize that people with
issues are way more likely to post than people whose systems are
working perfectly so maybe that's all that it is. Have you been running
problem free? Also have you played any blu-ray rips on the HDX?

I've seen a few problems. The device's been stuck a few times, requiring
a reboot. It has an on/off button unlike the PH (I think). I've had a
movie where the subtitles weren't recognized. Not perfect, but not
something you have to tinker with either. Just power-cycle and all's
well. I think I could give one to my 82 yo mother and upload movies and
series to it and let her play them. It's all quite simple. Cnet likes
it: http://crave.cnet.co.uk/homecinema/0,39029447,49300389,00.htm

I just wish someone would make a Squeeze *client* for it, so that it
would double as a SB Receiver. That would be really perfect. Just one
black box that handles all your video and audio needs. The HDX does
audio, but the interface is really awful at the moment.

I haven't played any Blueray stuff (I think). I still have an old analog
TV, the HDX makes me want to upgrade that too. BTW: It also plays the TV
shows my MythTV server records very well.

Re: [slim] Replay gain, equal volume.

2009-01-08 Thread Mark Lanctot

LeifPederson;380929 Wrote:
I had a hard time figuring out just what was happening with the replay
gain and SqueezeCenter. I thought there were bugs in the software
tools I was using to set gain. I experimented and found out that SC
will look at iTunes comments fields to get the volume info and then
somehow add on to that the REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN tags as well. So if
both were negative values, the volume could be VERY quiet.

I use MP3Tag and I added columns to display the REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN
field and the iTunes comment fields (forgot what the actual field name
is). I added replay gain tags by using foobar2000. I have a
combination of MP3's and FLAC files, and this tool works well for me
 (18,000+ tracks and growing).

Once I figured out that SC somehow combined iTunes gain with the
REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN tag, I sorted my huge collection of tracks by the
comment field that iTunes uses and then deleted ALL the iTunes comments.
I don't trust iTunes to do the right thing and I am fine with
separating out my iTunes library from my Transporter/SC library.

This behavior and experimenting was done about a year ago so it might
be the case that SC has since been fixed. IMHO, SC should utilize ONLY
the REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN tags for replay gain if they exist, and if
not, then use ONLY the iTunes volume check information. But under no
 circumstances should it use both.

If you need help trying to figure all this out or to duplicate my
earlier experiments, I'd be happy to help out.

To make a long story shorter, I replaced it with a Linksys WRT100

DOWN to about 15%. The new router has internal antennae, so I can't use
my big ugly extensions and I have not connected the Belkin extender.

I'm interested in how others have solved similar problems. Do SB's
work better with some routers than others, and have any of you found
one router or configuration to deal with walls better than others?

One other idea is to consider Powerline networking.

I have a pair of Zyxel PLA-400 devices:

I don't mean it in a negative way particularly, the benefits of
globalisation for many of the parties in the supply chain (not
necessarily all of them mind you) are well documented. It is a a term
which is often used in a quasi-political sense as well - there are lots
of articles (media and academic) which say it has caused everything
from the ills of certain developing countries to the spread of Al
Qaeda.

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,182746,00.html

I very much had the financial markets in mind when I posted. Banks in
general, and investment banks in particular, have actively pursued
globalisation as a strategy. They are present in multiple
jurisdicitions and have wide exposures across the majority of markets,
which is different certainly from the 90s.

Essentially, globalisation has created a situation of economic
interdependence between countries that has not occured previously. I
am not qualified to judge whether this is a good or bad thing in terms
of getting out of where we are now.

Also very much take your point about this being perhaps a new arena in
some ways for the US, which has traditionally been much more
independent from import/export risks, and therefore more
self-sufficient in a recession, than the UK or Europe.

[slim] Squeezebox wiki Firefox's search engine dropdown

2009-01-08 Thread Mark Lanctot

I'm probably the only one interested in this, but in case anyone else
is, the Squeezebox wiki index page:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Special:Allpages

seems to be a searchable page for Firefox 3.0.5.

If the page is searchable, I believe the searchbox dropdown list at
the top right turns blue. If you click on the dropdown box you will
see an Add SqueezeboxWiki (English) entry. Do that and you'll have a
nice new searchbox with a little SB Classic as an icon.

Now - here's why I may be the only one interested in this - it isn't a
great search, it seems to require the exact wiki page name before it
finds anything :) but since I know a few of them off the top of my head
it helps me at least.

The brightness button is required for firmware updates but you can now
set the SB3 to auto-update, at least in recent firmwares. Which you
have to load with the brightness button first, so kind of a
chicken-and-egg thing - but if you have a fairly recent firmware you
can just set it by pressing and holding left and going through setup.

You can get a nice backlit remote with huge buttons or a fancy one like
the Harmony or a super-cheap one.

Re: [slim] Need New Wireless Router

2009-01-08 Thread Goodsounds

A power outage did in my 3 year old Linksys a few weeks ago - have
bought the same model to replace it, all is well again with a simple
solution. Any reason why you wouldn't do the same?

Unless you're spending several hundred bucks, and sometimes even then,
most routers on the market are pretty unsubstantial. The one I had
before only lasted for a few years, so I thought 3+ years was
acceptable.

On the Powerline device suggestion, be aware that owing to electrical
code and home wiring practice differences, these often do not work well
in the US (if that is where you are). If you want to try it, or if
you're elsewhere, maybe it is a good alternative for you to consider.

On the DD-WRT and Tomato suggestions, if you're not an IT tech or
software coder, it might be best to stick with what comes in the box
you purchase. Most people do so succesfully.

Came across a comment regarding squeezebox on the wiki
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_Reset_commands):

Reset Audio Hardware (aka Xilinx Reset)

These steps will often fix problems with garbled sound, or no sound
at all during playback.

The wiki page does not say if it is possible to do such a reset on a
Slimp3, so I sent a question to Logitech support, and they confirmed
they have no way to do this, but suggested maybe the wider community
may be able to help.

My question for help comes in 3 parts:
1) anyone know a way to diagnostics if this is really the root cause of
my problems? Or suggestions on other issues that may cause similiar
problems (I already tried to reload the firmware with bootloader, tried
different server versions, different PCs as servers, wireless/wired
network - made no difference)

2) anyone ever done a reset of a Slimp3 Xilnx chip?

3) on the circuit board, there are soldering points for what looks like
a 6 pin connector, and from the Xilinx documentation I can see that the
cable used for in-place configuration of the chip use 6 signalling
cables - anyone know any more about the pin-out for the 6 soldering
points, and/or any info on how to get hands on the JEDEC file for the
Slimp3?

Any help is greatly appreciated, I love my Slimp3 and would be very
sorry to let it go

Regards
Jan Robøle

Re: [slim] NYTimes - Cisco to enter the Home Digital Entertainment Market

2009-01-08 Thread tamanaco

Maybe instead of viewing Cisco as a competitor Logitech/SD should try
and partner with them to incorporate SqueezeCenter in their Media Hubs
and media networking components to ease the home and internet
networking hurdles. I think this would benefit both companies. I have
no idea about the processor's specs of the Cisco Media Hubs, but if
it's powerful enough and the possibility of putting SC on them
exists... then SD folks should approach Cisco. Using Cisco hubs as the
hardware server and their home network devices as the backbone can only
be a good thing. The more the merrier. Keep your friends close, but your
potential enemies closer. Apple allowed its mortal foe's operating
system to coexist within their hardware. What I call, so far, the
biggest digital Trojan Horse. I'm not an Apple fan, but that strategic
move by Steve Jobs was brilliant.

I'm probably the only one interested in this, but in case anyone else

seems to be a searchable page for Firefox 3.0.5.

Well, it was interesting enough for me to have created the same

Was easy ;)

Re: [slim] Hardware reset for Slimp3: Can anyone help with resetting Xilinx chip?

2009-01-08 Thread Mark Lanctot

I don't believe the SliMP3 or the SB1 even have a Xilinx chip - I
believe it was introduced with the SB2 as part of the SlimDSP. The
codecs aren't hard-coded, they're coded on the Xilinx which can be
rewritten. The SliMP3 and SB1 have hard-coded codecs and can't be
changed or reset.

I've read about the socketed CPU in the SliMP3 getting oxidized
contacts. It can be extracted with a chip extractor or (carefully)
with a jewller's screwdriver IIRC and the contacts cleaned with a
pencil eraser or a fibreglass contact cleaner pen. You might want to
search for those posts.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox wiki Firefox's search engine dropdown

The Firefox search isn't actually searching _in_ that particular page.
It just populates the wiki's search box and runs the standard search.
But this is better, since it's doing both article title and body text
searches.

Re: [slim] Multi-room listening

2009-01-08 Thread spc337

Budget for the amp/pre-amp solution is around $1000 could go higher if
there is no obvious solutions at that price point.

I'm thinking Rotel (although more expensive) RSX-1550 which supports
multiple zones would do it. I would like to use a single Duet/SB3.
The maximum distance to the speakers will be 75ft so I guess I'll need
some good speaker wire.

I'm not that familiar with these do it all receivers but I'm guessing
that each zones volume can be controller separately without the need of
a special volume control? Also, I'm hoping they can all be in party
mode playing the same thing.

It also isn't clear if their zone outs are amplified? I'm guessing
not.

I would prefer a solution at a better price point..

The slimp3 has a completely different firmware updater. I've noticed
that the PIC chip tends to corrupt the rom over time. Sometimes simply
flashing the PIC with the slimp3 firmware updater can help.

If they rely on the Linksys model for customer support of consumer
products then this entire line is DOOMED! :)

That may well be the case. Cisco is one of the best in terms of
enterprise support, but that support model is too expensive for the
consumer. Perhaps they've continued to use the original Linksys
approach for those products which is inadequate (I've never called them
honestly). In my view, forums are the primary technology support
approach these days, but I suppose I lot of people still call the
support line. I honestly haven't done that for cheap gear ($100) for
years. They need to have an active support community for sure.

I guess my main thought is that this product set and the launch of the
new site appear to be Cisco trying to re-engergize their approach to
the consumer. It remains to be seen if it will be effective, but it's
impressive so far.

[slim] Crossfade for Song Skip?

With MediaMonkey and WinAmp providing nice smooth crossfading even when

its a minor and cosmetic feature, but it sure sound better and is an

A feature request I guess...unless someone has a solution?

It's coded in the page.
It's based on the OpenSearch specification ( http://www.opensearch.org/
). Works in both FF and IE.

It works this way:

- You add an xml file to your site that contains the search engine
description, here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com//opensearch_desc.php
- You add a link tag to the HTML of the pages you want the search engine
to be installed from:
link rel=search type=application/opensearchdescription+xml
href=/opensearch_desc.php title=SqueezeboxWiki (English) /

I personally think a link 'add the wiki searchengine plugin to your
browser' would be more effective. I think you more or less stumbled upon it.

I just implemented both methods to my website. Thanks for the tip!

Peter

Re: [slim] Multi-room listening

2009-01-08 Thread badbob

The problem is he wants each room to be controlled, probably with remote
unless he goes into the cupboard and adjusts the pot on the amp- that
T-amp does not have remote control. Also if the SB has variable out,
that'll effect all rooms rather than individual levels per room. So
either he needs three integrated amps, or three SB's, or a amp with RF
or RS232 wireless remote volume control.

I personally think a SB in each room is better sense, that way you can
control volume per room with the unit itself, if you want the poweramp
to control volume (remotely) you're looking at pretty expensive piece
of kit- and have option to play different music in each room (and also
see what's playing as you have a screen) With that six channel amp
somewhere. What if you're in the two rooms without a SB and want to
browse music? Better have x-ray vision to see into the room that has
the SB. Or have some kind of touchscreen control either SB Duet or
touch screen system to web interface.

Maybe pickup a NAD 916?

No doubt I'm missing something, but why get a 7.1 home theater amp if
your intention is to play music through 3 pairs of speakers (one left
and and one right in each of 3 different rooms)? They just don't seem
to fit. I would think that 'something more like these'
would be what you are looking for. That Marantz ZS5300 particularly
looks like it has the features you want, although I don't know anything
about how good it is. It has 3 different source inputs (one for each
zone), but there may be an easy way to use 1 source going to all 3
pairs of speakers. That is, something more elegant than 2 Y-adapters
coming out of your SB ;o) And it does have separate volume controls.
