Hm...

Would you probably like to install the iPeng plugin and try whether the
volume up/down buttons there work?
They are on the NowPlaying plugins page (right swipe on NowPlaying)?

Hmm. I have IRBlaster working fine with the standard squeezebox IR
remote. When I push volume up/down on the remote, the SB volume stays
fixed but the amp goes up and down in volume, as wised and expected. I
don't need to use the web interface.

It actually works a bit with iPeng too, but gets out of sync quickly
and can easily get into a state where the amp is set to zero volume and
no amount of playing with the slider will bring it back. But I think if
you had basic up down buttons sending basic up/down signals, it would
work!

You shouldn't need to upgrade Debian. I run 7.3.2 'testing' builds on
an etch box as well as my lenny box. It does sound like something is
amiss on your machine or SC configuration if you are seeing flaky

[slim] Commands as Favourites (Favorites)

2009-01-15 Thread JadeMonkee

Forgive the Australian spelling...
I read in brief a post that alluded to the possibility that one can
store a command as a favourite for access in a playlist.
I did a search through the Wiki, but it's rather difficult to find
-anything- in that behemoth.
So is it true?
Can I create a command as a favourite?
The immediate thing I thought of was to create a favourite that
switched the "power off" screen saver to blanksaver, then turned the
Squeezebox off. I would add this as the last item in a playlist when I
listen to music when going to sleep (I'm about to start a little
electronics project that will turn my speaers + sub off/on when the
squeezebox turns off/on).
So, is it possible? And where is the documentation?
Thanks heaps.

that does it, is there any way for me to switch from Sirius to the FM

Re: [slim] Linn - SkweezyDS

2009-01-15 Thread adamslim

Yeah I started a thread on this ages ago, when the SB/DS stuff was
coming in the Linn forum, but no-one cared.

IMO Logitech should have started licensing their system ages ago, as
lots of established audiophile players like Linn, Naim, Meridian,
McIntosh and the like are getting into streaming players. They can do
the sound, to the satisfaction of their customers, but have little
experience with the streaming systems.

The cost of a slave Receiver is negligible (I use a slave SB3 as a
second display now I have upped my Booms!). Sure Logitech are getting
some sales from this, but what they want is a fully integrated system
that just works, with people buying one Linn/Mc/Meridian or whatever,
and half a dozen Booms, Receivers and SB Classics.

No, this could happen before, too.
It's due to the polling nature of iPeng and will change in one of the
next releases.
It will happen when an update is coming in while you are switching

switches back when the "new" data arrives.

Re: [slim] FM station internet feed help

2009-01-15 Thread discgo

So I got my fav FM station up and running thanks to bpa, but now I can't
get Sirius stations to play on SqueezeCenter. They only play if I'm
connected to SqueezeNetwork. I tried setting the Windows Media setting
back to native, that did nothing.

On the controller it pulls up the station, they hangs and sometimes
counts a second or two then the counter goes back to 0. No sound at
all. On SC, it counts and looks like it's playing but no sound at all.

What's the deal here? Seems like I exchanged one problem for another
as I never have had a single Sirius issues at all.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04, SC 7.3.2, and have mplayer & AlienBBC
installed.

Any help will be much appreciated!

enjoy the music!

Sounds like a plan: 7.3 works fine for me on Debian. So well, I
haven't bothered to move to 7.3.1 despite the web UI nagging me.

Something is amiss somewhere on your machine, so whatever it is, it

I'll have to see if 7.3.2 requires that I upgrade Debian as well.
Since this box is my primary file server and Bittorrent machine I have
to be conservative with it.

Squeezecenter + Transmission + samba and a few scripts actually seem to
push the machine only about 20MB into swap and there's not a lot of
paging, it's not too bad.

Actually, I prefer to have all the more sophisticated options supported
through something like CustomBrowse and just try to find an optimum
feature set for iPeng as it is.

But sorting albums per year for an artist sounds reasonable to me.

Yes, I remember the discussion.
HOWEVER, my understanding at that time was, that IRBlaster would
completely take over the volume control and doing volume changes

This is different from what is described here and then there's your

If you've got enough space, use FLAC and it won't degrade the sound at

Just another opinion:

I would prefer the sorting by year as well, and the newest album on
top, because i normally listen to the newest albums of an artist. And
i'm also having artists with many albums!

A setting would be the best way i guess, it's just a question of the

Ah, my Harmony never got that much use.. stupid TV really doesn't like
it. (It is VERY picky about pauses between changing input sources...
too short and it ignores it, too long and it is busy trying to lock
onto a blank input and ignores it... I blame the TV since it also does
dumb things with HDMI sound, and despite having an optical out it won't
send the HDMI audio to my receiver except from the DTV input which is
useless since I use Composite for cable and HDMI for DVD...)

2009-01-15 Thread rubbermp3

one seemless way (akin to *nix symlinks) is NTFS junctions (special file
type -- not shortcuts those are something else). there is a utility at
sysinternals
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx) to
create these under WinXP (Vista may already have this). I simply:

- installed SC normally; when i was happy it was working properly, shut
it down
- moved the SqueezeCenter folder out of c:\...\AppData to my other
spindle (e.g. F:\jct\appdata\SqueezeCenter
- from a cmd prompt ran, junction "c:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter" F:\jct\appdata\SqueezeCenter
- restarted SqueezeCenter

my appdata folder now looks like:

11/25/2008 05:03 PM Adobe
12/08/2008 07:48 PM Microsoft Corporation
01/15/2009 05:04 PM SqueezeCenter

done.

good luck

Re: [slim] Does this sound like a conflict of some sort?

2009-01-15 Thread NeilC

Thanks very much for everyone's input on this. I would have never in a
million years thought it could be anything to do with the file format.
It just so happens that all the music I've been listening to just
recently was in AAC format.

I think I'll batch process these into another format, probably just
MP3.

I'll probably look around the forum to answer this but for anyone
monitoring this thread, are there any recommendations for CBR vs VBR
when considering the load on the ReadyNAS?

Again, thanks very much guys!

Understood -- and if most people want alphabetic, no problem at all.
Personally, I find it more natural to view and select music by
artist/year...I like viewing in terms of "career progression", and with
a large collection (or advancing age!) I sometimes can't recall album
names, but I know I want to listen to, for example, XX's most recent
album.

Re: [slim] Sound quality: Duet Receiver vs SB3?

2009-01-15 Thread twynne

Lol - thanks, but I haven't given all of the details. :-)

I already have 2 SB3's and 2 Booms - in a 1 bedroom flat! The Booms
are both actively used pretty much daily, and the SB3's a bit less. I
was considering replacing one of the SB3's with the Duet.

The infrared issue comes in that I use a Harmony Remote to control the
systems in each room, and it 'unifies' all of the components. If I
swap to the Duet I won't be able to control it at all without picking
up the Controller.

I use IRBlaster too, and the behaviour described by bat400 is the same

No, it does not, since the only really useful thing you could use it
for would be pause (or on/off) and volume. Without a display,
navigation would be blind ("if I hit down three times, then I am at the
album I want") and painful.

Personally, I would keep both units.

Use the SB3 where you want to see the display (perhaps a bedroom, it
makes a nifty alarm clock) and the Duet where you didn't need to see
the display.

At least try it with a couple units for a while: the SB client-server
model really shows its stuff with multiple units.

I'm considering selling either one of the SB3's or the Receiver only

I'm looking for compelling reasons to keep one or the other. At the

[slim] Sound quality: Duet Receiver vs SB3?

2009-01-15 Thread twynne

I've just ordered a new Duet, and just wondered (as the Duet is clearly
a newer product) is there any difference in audio quality between that
output by the Duet as compared to the SB3? Are the components in one
any better than the other? Any subjective opinions??

As the types of outputs remain the same, I don't see one having an
advantage over the other in the area of connectivity. Is there any
other advantage of the Duet Receiver?

Thanks,

Tom

Maybe on the weekend, though I got it sort of working again after
killing a few processes and restarting the server.

Platform is Debian etch on a 600MHz VIA C3 (x86 chip) with 224MB of

versions, though I tend to use the 'light' skin when possible.

2009-01-15 Thread neurophyre

Is it just me or is 7.3.3 and to a lesser extent 7.3.x in general full
of bugs? Since upgrading, I've had a YAML-related crash that stopped
squeezecenter from starting; another crash that did the same
(unexplained) and caused my settings to be forgotten; Softsqueeze is
mostly broken in that fast forward and pause don't work most of the
time, even when I skip songs in Squeezecenter (I've had to switch to
streaming to VLC); and the UI on my hardware Squeezebox occasionally
becomes totally unresponsive for half a minute, when this issue had
been largely corrected in previous versions.

Is Logitech guiding the development of this software, or what is going
on? Squeezecenter had been steadily improving until 7.3.2 - 7.3.3.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-15 Thread jazztime

Personally I prefer the albums sorted by year (I never use "Artists->All
Albums", as the loading takes way to long time) - but I can understand
that some people might prefer the alphabetical sorting.

I guess that CustomBrowse will solve that problem - is it still planned
that iPeng will support CustomBrowse in 1.1?

Oh by the way, and once again: iPeng is really great!!

I used to use Sonos and Linn systems in my house, but have now changed
to Logitech Duets and Linn due to this development (and the fact that
SC7/Jive is wonderful whereas Sonos is totally unconfigurable). I thus
agree with the above post in that it benefits both stakeholders: many
Linn users will now be tempted to buy Duets and then once they have,
they'll be tempted to 'pepper' their houses with Duet receivers!

Many of my friends now intend going down this very route; they really
like the idea of a Linn system in the lounge and a mix of Duets/Booms
in bedrooms, kitchens, workshops etc. Three have actually bought Duets
with the intension to add Linn stuff later, so that's three sales to
Logitech and nill to Sonos!

At the minute, I'm using the controller as a 'sacrificial' receiver (to
save tying up one of the Duet receivers) but it would be fantastic not
to have to do this. It would also save having to stream an unnecessary
feed to the Jive and thus cut down on network traffic / NAS workload
etc. It would thus be fantastic to have a SC7 UPnP plugin but I can see
one area that might consideration: unless it performed the same trick
that Linn have used (to upload the selected tracks as a playlist to the
UPnP renderer) it might suffer from the standard UPnP shortfall which is
that gaps are heard between tracks. This wouldnÂ’t be noticeable on many
albums, but on albums where tracks flow seamlessly into each other,
itÂ’s a disaster (this can be heard if you try using Cidero to control a
Linn DS).

Turn off Twonky. If it isn't running (and SC7 is) then you should get
SC7's interface.

820 albums with 10388 songs by 526 artists.

Before I got my first SqueezeBox, I had two jukeboxes for CDs, one
retired because it was too small, and the second had 300 slots.

So in the years since I started, I've bought a lot of music. (nearly all
from CDs that I bought).

It really changed how I listen to music. I listen to much more.

Of course, I'm now broke, as I buy new models from Slim Devices, and
more music all the time.

The first SqueezeBox became three, and then a Transporter, and then a
Duet and then a Boom.

I'd love to see this sort method as an option too. I also vote for an
artist/year/album sort option in Album View, the way it is implemented

IR Blaster allows you to input the correct IR codes so that an IR
transmitter (often called a 'bug') connected to the headphone socket on
a Squeezebox will send these codes to control another device.

You can set it up so that when you press Volume-Up or Volume-Down on
the SB3 remote, it doesn't alter the SB3 volume, but instead sends a
volume IR command to your amp.

Because you don't have 'traditional' Volume-Up or Volume-Down buttons
in the iPeng app, this functionality is lost. An alternative would be
to have an option to use such buttons instead of the volume slider, but
that doesn't fit with your design model particularly. Also, I don't
know what CLI commands would need to be sent by iPeng to mimic the V.Up
and V.Down actions, and whether they would automatically trigger the
IRRemote actions.

If someone uses an SBC with IRRemote: Is there a Volume Up/Down button
on the Controller, and does it trigger the IRRemote actions?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 simply won't play...

2009-01-15 Thread Tubebox

Well so far the problem seems to appear over and over. It is not
dependent at all on anything known, the thing is that even when discs
and folders are named the same, the library is not with right paths,
and the SB3 does not want to play/stream files. It is annoying to
rescan your stored music which takes over 20 minutes for before it
starts to stream songs.

So once again:
Mac mini with Mac OS 10.5.
One external drive is firewire
Another one is USB
They both have the same names as well as folders with music on them.
Every now and then it looses paths stored in primary Macintosh volume
in users folder where the aliases (shortcuts) are, so you have rescan
the library again everytime this happens.

Please, any clues?

That's definitely Custom Browse, there's nowhere in SC where something
is sorted in reverse order (other than New Music) AFAIK.

That it makes more sense is arguable. I always find the Alphabet a
quite simple sorting criterion, on the other hand "The Rolling Stones"
are probably the only Artist in _my_ collection where you seriously
have to search for an Album.

BTW, the SqueezeCenter Web Interface does not seem to sort at all, at
least I could not find any order in my Rolling Stones or Paul Weller

Hi Dogberry2,

thanks a lot for this step-by-step tutorial.

I think i will do it this way - its very easy and its not a good
solution for me with two SC databases.

It's true, the SC and the Duet are not very good for Playlists. There
is a "bug" so maybe you can vote for them, too. it will integrate a
"playlist manager" in the duet controller - i hope it will come very
soon :) 'KLICK' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9564)

Re: [slim] Does this sound like a conflict of some sort?

2009-01-15 Thread Dogberry2

It does sound as if the problem is one of transcoding. I run a similar
setup off a ReadyNAS (though without the power line plugs) and get
great response on my Duet controller and receiver. However, I use FLAC
for my entire library (with a small percentage of MP3s I glommed from
sources other than CDs), so no transcoding is necessary. From what I've
read both here and in the ReadyNAS forums, it's when the NAS has to
start transcoding that it bogs down, because it just doesn't have the
horsepower.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter on NAS and PC

2009-01-15 Thread Dogberry2

Yes, it is possible to run multiple copies of SC, one on your NAS and
one on your PC. However, the problem that arises is that the two will
use different databases to track your music library. Each copy will
maintain its own database on the machine it's running on, so changes to
one will not affect the other. Also, the file/directory paths by which
each copy refers to your song tracks will be different. So running two
copies will not give you the effect you want.

The browser interface into SC is not a particularly spiffy way to
create and maintain extensive playlists anyway, so even people who run
SC on a PC often use another tool to create and change playlists, as do
those of us who are running SC on a NAS or other server. The biggest
difference for us, though, is that we have to change the file paths.
Here are the steps I use:

- Map a network drive to your NAS share holding your music
- Open a media player (I use J. River, but pretty nearly any player
will do) and have it scan the mapped music drive
- Use the media player's slick-and-easy interface to create playlists
  as desired
- Export the playlists to M3U format (some players use M3U as their
default; with others, you have to do a separate export)
- Open the M3U files in a decent text editor - if you don't have one,
even a crummy one like Notepad or vi will do
- Do a global replace to change the mapped drive letter to the proper
root path on your NAS (If your NAS is not Windows-based, you'll
probably also have to change the folder delimiters from backslashes
  to slashes)
- Save the modified M3U files into the directory on the NAS where you
told SC its playlists are stored
- When you're finished updating playlists, bring up the browser
interface to SC and tell it to re-scan playlists

This might sound cumbersome, but after you've done it once or twice,
it's actually very easy. It lets you take advantage of the easy-to-use
playlist builder in the native media player software, and the tweaking
of the path names becomes automatic. (I set up a macro in my text
editor to do it, so it's really a one-keystroke operation. If you get a
text editor like Crimson or UltraEdit, it takes almost no time or
effort.) I maintain dozens of playlists this way, set up for different
moods or circumstances. (My wife loves it, because it relieves her of
any effort of building up her own playlists using the Duet controller,
and she likes the convenience of picking a three- or four-hour list
with one button.)

Hope this helps get you where you're trying to go. The Duet is great,
but if you use playlists a lot, neither the controller nor the browser
interface is particularly slick for building or changing them.

My iPeng skin sorts on year in this case but that might have to do with
CustomBrowse.

Yes, I think it makes much more sense with the albums sorted on year.

Until CustomBrowse is supported I would very much like a setting for
this.

A little the same thing as a requested earlier, an option to switch
artist and title in album and new music view to make the artist name
appear larger. It's more likley that you know the name of the artist
rather than the name of the album. This might not be true for people
with a lot of various artists and classic music.

Re: [slim] FM radio streaming

2009-01-15 Thread bpa

Radsiosharks works fine - I'm not sure what you mean by "so-so".

I found the reception better than an Tuner card and there is no need
for an external antenna (although you can use one if you want) which
Tuner cards require.

The Radioshark plugin means you tune into "shark://101.9 for 101.1 FM
or shark://1049 if you want 1049 AM.

I set up a few favorites which have friendly names and it also works
fine with alarms - no worry about broken internet connections for
wakeup alarms

I don't quite understand how that work, then? How does IRblaster change
the volume if it's fixed in SC? Is there a special plugin menu? Does it
only work with the IR remote? Anything where I can step in to do
something?

[slim] FM radio streaming

2009-01-15 Thread 4mula1

In trying to wean my mom off of her boombox and onto her Squeezebox, I
got to thinking what it would really take. I'm slowly getting her to
rip her CDs so eventually she will quit using the CD player but she
still listens to the local radio station(s) that have no internet
stream.

I've looked at the RadioShark but the reviews seem so-so and I want a
really dead simple solution that doesn't have any complex dependencies.
I really don't want to get a TV card for their PC just for FM.

How much interest from a consumer (not business) standpoint would there
be for a standalone network FM tuner? Something like point your browser
to http://tunerip/101.1 and like magic you get 101.1FM streamed to you.

Re: [slim] Linking different streams to multiple MP3 files

2009-01-15 Thread nunovi

Hi,

I was searching for the exact same thing when I bumped into this
thread. However, the URL is not working for me as it never selects a
playlist (When I check on the player, the playlist is empty).
I'm using the following URL:

http://mysqueezeserver:9000/stream.mp3?p0=playlist&p1=play&p2=Lounge

where Lounge is my playlist name.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks for your help.

1. Ok, not really a big deal just would be a bit quicker and more
impressive in demos if it is instant!

2. Yep, I have IR Blaster doing the volume thing to the amp. My point
is once this is set up, the vol control on iPeng is fixed at 100% and
you can't control the volume via iPeng, so I need to keep the
squeezebox or amp remote around. Would be nice if iPeng could cope
with this, but probably hard to implement in a really 'neat' way. But
super handy if you could as a lot of audio people (ie iPeng users,

3. Zapping (which you do by holding down the '+' (i.e. add) key for
about 1 second) by default adds the currently playing song to the
zapped songs list - it's basically like a quick collection in Lightroom
if that means anything to you - and handy spot to store a list of things
you can build on the fly. Because of this quick collection, you can do
many things - in my case, Custom Skip will skip any tracks in that
playlist if they are ever added, so it is very easy to eassentially
remove a track from your library (without actually deleting anything).
I know other people use it to mark tracks that have bad tags, as another
example. Lots of things can be done with it, and it would be great to
have a zap button somewhere (maybe around repeat/shuffle would work? A
little lightning bolt maybe?)

4. You are welcome!

Re: [slim] Thank You Slimdevices / Logitech & Community

2009-01-15 Thread teeitup

I'd like to add that after a year I'm still exited about the product.

The thousands of dollars I had spent on CD's and the vast majority
hadn't come off the shelf for years. It really was a waste when you
think about it. Being able to rip them and use a MP3 player in the car
and elsewhere was nice. I actually have a Cowon that plays flac.

SC has changed all of that and now the entire collection is at my
fingertips.

On the weekends I just set a random mix and let it play. I have been
asked "what station are you listening to?" too many times to count.

No commercials. :)

Thanks,
