Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-07-20 Thread pippin

Update: #2 is not going to happen because the changes in the UI are too
big for a universal app, the unified approach I had simply is not good
enough.

Local caching of all relevant information doesn't necessarily speed
up things, I'll cache more in the future - with both iPeng versions -
but speed really depends on your server.
It also does not necessarily depend on library size, except for
search.

Re: [slim] Digital output level for Duet and Touch

2010-07-20 Thread Phil Leigh

There is no level in the conventional sense. There is just the
bitstream - the sample value numbers ripped from the CD. At max vol
(and no replaygain) all units simply send the numbers. The DAC
interprets the numbers.

level and replaygain simply alter the value of the numbers.

So yes they will be identical level into the same DAC - and the cable
is irrelevant.

Interesting development... A little rough around the edges and lacking
functionality, but quite usable already. I quite like the swipe
navigation though the left menu. Maybe add a home button somewere?
Getting back to 'Home' sometimes takes a lot of swipes...

Using the Spotify plugin, album art is showing in the album lists
(great!) - for some reason iPeng does not. Not too fond of using
different font sizes in lists - kind of disturbs the clean user
interface.

Oh - and please lose that gradient background for something solid or

My wife said the same and suggested scrolling menu entries to keep the

Other ideas than scrolling ?

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-07-20 Thread erland

This is great!

I realized you were up to something when I saw the thread in the 3rd
party plugins section earlier but I didn't expect something like this.
Really great work, a lot better/more than I expected for an initial
release.

I'm going to create a longer list of enhancement requests (and maybe
some bug reports) a bit later, I just need to use it a bit more first.

Some bugs and other things I noticed immediately:
- Would be great to have a back button on the navigation menu, will
make it more similar to other apps. I realized pretty fast that I have
to be able to slide back but making the title as a back button can't
hurt. I also think it would be a bit user friendly as sliding back
sometimes misses, especially in lists which can be scrolled
vertically.
- There seems to be some issues with the Custom Browse menus regarding
album art that isn't perfect yet, have to investigate a bit more what
differs compared to SqueezePlay and iPeng. I really happy they are
working as good as they are though. The problem I saw was that I got
album cover icons on track level but it showed the default album cover
and not the real one. The standard browse menu track menus doesn't
contain any album cover.
- Is there some way to show current playlist ?
- I'd love to have a portrait mode that showed big album cover and a
bit larger text so it's visible from the couch 2-3 meters away.

Anyway, really great work, it's worth every cent, I'd definitely
recommend this to anyone having an iPad. Just have to decide if I
should give it a 5 or 4 star rating in the AppStore, I think I'll wait
a bit to give you a chance to convince me it's worth a 5 through some
bug fixing and enhancing it even further :-)

You need *some* CPU performance if in case you run ALAC files as they
are inline transformed to FLAC or WAV and send to the clients. The more
clients you have the more conversions processes are running. Then, all
searches through a huge library hogs the CPU too.

Perhaps even more if it is as instant and full featured (well almost)

Flash that rules out full-scale caching of artwork for large libraries.

nothing, really unusable if you sit in front of the client and tries to

Sorry, I thought you were using OSS for the usb sound adapters.

You will need to at least load the snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss kernel
modules.

Alternatively, change --without-alsa to --without-oss on the configure
line. I believe the issue is having both APIs in the library. I
happen to stumble upon the same error you've been seeing during some
testing on the weekend and disabling the second hostapi I could open
the device.

I'm trying to gather more information before I report it to the
portaudio dev team.

makefile.linux26-alsa-display uses the portaudio development library
which includes support for alsa, oss and pulseaudio. Squeezeslave has
additional command line options with this makefile. It also uses the
newer v19 api.

makefile.linux26-display uses the stable portaudio library v0.18.1 and
only supports OSS. It uses the older v18 api. I'm planning to
depreciate this makefile eventually.

I don't feel the slight delay when loading coverart annoying. I don't
even find the loading time of the real album list in SqueezePad too

because the progress bar makes the loading time feel faster than on the

By the way - I wouldn't want an iPad app to use all the 64MB just to

Oh, I've got a user with more than 100.000 Tracks on a ReadyNAS.
Loading the album list on that one takes half an hour or so, that's
probably a bit too much :)

If you've got a slow or busy server every menu level can be quite
delayed. But I believe the right way to counter that is to have a
faster server.
Plus, SBS 7.6 is a big progress in that respect.

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-07-20 Thread dem

Very nice! I've been waiting for something like this since the iPad was
announced. I find it quite fast and responsive. I've tried it
controlling a Receiver, Boom, SB3, and SqueezePlay/Mac, playing from My
Music, Pandora, Rhapsody, Slacker, and Radio Paradise. Everything works
great.

Here are my comments and suggestions so far.

I'd like to see the following options:

Prevent display sleep when playing.
Darker background (perhaps with a texture).

The icon looks a little ratty on the iPad screen (the frame border is
jagged). I'm also not a fan of lilac, or whatever that light purplish
color is that's all over the place. :-)

I agree about using a consistent font size in lists, as suggested
before. This bugs me on the Controller as well.

It would be nice to see the playlist count when relevant (X of YY).

In long alphabetized lists it would be handy to be able to jump to a
given letter, as you can in the iPhone's iPod app.

I agree about providing an arrow for moving back on menus, as suggested
before. The backwards swipe is not so obvious because the menu window
doesn't move horizontally as you're starting to swipe. I like the
behavior of the article window in Reeder, for example, where the window
starts to move as you swipe back, but there's also a back arrow if you
don't want to swipe at all.

I think it would be nice if the control buttons mirrored those of
SqueezePlay. Whether or not you do this, it could behave like
SqueezePlay and provide buttons for Shuffle and Repeat, except when
using Pandora where these buttons are Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down, or
when using Slacker where these buttons are Add Favorite and Remove
Favorite. SqueezePlay also dims the Next and Shuffle buttons when
there's only a single song in the playlist. The little i could go in
the bar across the top to make room.

This is a real nitpick, but I think it would look better if the control
button panel didn't run off the bottom of the screen.

The volume slider can be adjusted on a player where the digital output
is fixed at 100% (but the slider of course has no effect).

And speaking of SqueezePlay again, it has icons for the top-level menu
items that perhaps you could use.

If you hit search but don't enter anything and then press the button to
hide the keyboard, I think the menu should go back instead of forward.

I'll certainly vote in any feature polls you post.

What is it about quality Squeezebox control and Berlin? :-)

Thanks!

Good SW developers here. Lots of Squeezebox users.

A friend of mine happens to be the original author of the Handheld

(although I think he was the person suggesting getting an SB in the

ie, user pressed 'jump_fwd' button

Direct response to the POST:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK..Server: Squeezebox Server (7.6.0 -

Which is basically Please dump the existing buffered stream, and go
get this stream

Player responds by executing the GET the server told it to do:
GET /stream.mp3?player=00:04:20:xx:xx:xx HTTP/1.0

Not very complicated. I am probably missing some stuff, I am at work,
and it is spammy
to sniff my home network from here. (And, yes, my radio is next to me
at work, but on a different
network where bandwidth is cheaper and since that is on a cable modem,
as is my home system,
the latency is virtually nothing.)

If I was syncing, there would be more complexity keeping track of where
multiple
players were in the output stream, but I'm not at the moment.

The newer players 'mostly' use HTTP with some low level stuff passed
back as slimproto,
(which is documented in the server docs). The stream, however, was
your question, and that is
just HTTP.

cool if you could output video to your display (like apple TV) to show

[slim] Cannot connect to My Apps

2010-07-20 Thread paul44birch

I am struggling to resolve the above problem and it seems that even then
best efforts of the Logitech support team cannot help, so it’s over to
the forum experts for some solutions.
From my duet handset I try to access ‘My Apps’ but get the following
message:
A mysqueezebox.com account is required for this service. Please access
Squeezebox Server Settings mysqueezebox.com with a web browser to
configure.
Everything else is working and problems started with forced update to
latest version of squeezebox server.
I have reverted to version 7.4.1 which allows me to access my music and
the squeezebox help team deleted my squeezebox.com account and requested
that I create a new one. I have done this today but with no solution to
the problem.
When I re-registered I received the confirmation email telling me I had
a new account and to click on the link to activate (again I did this)
Other points to note:
When I connect to mysqueezebox.com and go into the players tab it shows
my duet but states that it is ‘not connected’ (how can I resolve this?)
I use a squeezebox duet, connected to Audio innovations pre-power and
Jas Orsa speakers. Music is via iTunes kept on my desk top PC
I have posted this on both the general discussion and duet forums and
all help/advice gratefully received.

Ok, the big problem with a computer and high quality audio as I've
understood is that there are too much electronics in a computer which
results in various kind of interference. Less electronics results in
less risk of interferences between the circuits. I'm no expert at this
so I really don't know what causes the interference but I suspect
things like the power supply unit and any fans or hard drives are good
candidates. I'm guessing it might also be possible to somehow shield
the audio circuits to minimize the risk and high quality audio circuits
are probably better than low quality. I'm sure you are already aware of
most of this and you are probably also aware of that it's not that easy
to design a computer with high quality audio output. Just getting a high
quality sound card is usually not enough.

[slim] What should be in the next version of SqueezePad ?

2010-07-20 Thread bluegaspode

Now as SqueezePad has been officially released there are sooo many
directions on could go for improving the user experience.
Of course not everything can be done at the same time in an
one-developer-shop, so things must be prioritized.
As I'm already very happy with the current set of features, I decided
to start a poll to find out what feature would make most of the
user-base happy.

So take your time and vote for the thing you want me to start at next.

MORE IMAGES OF YOUR MUSIC COLLECTION
Right now there a different ways to find more images matching your
music collection/the current playing song.
One of them is the Flickr-App who searches for images and erland's
'Song Info' plugin who does a very good jobs at finding images on
Last.FM.
I always enjoy watching them on the Radio, but the display there
unfortunately is sooo small.

Now with the iPad why not browse all these images like in the 'Photos'
App ? Fullscreen, with scaling, as a slideshow ...
So lets just tap the image of the current song and start such an image
viewer !

BETTER PLAYLIST MANAGEMENT
While the current/to be released version of SqueezePad has some basic
playlist features via the context-menus (all those that logitech
provides on their SqueezePlay devices) I guess people heavily using
playlist might find the possibilities a bit limited.
The lets have a custom playlist editor which optionally appears on the
right side (overlaying the 'Now Playing' part of the app until
dismissed) where you can reorder tracks with drag and drop or delete
single items.
If you are in the albums/titles/artists menu on the left one could even
think of drag'n'dropping them from left to right (I'm not sure yet how
complicated this could get for me).
Remember: touching a song already changes the menu or presents the
context-menu so I still have to think how to best avoid confusions.

SYNCING PLAYERS (VARIATION A)
Syncing players is available in the current version of SqueezePad via
the default logitech menu. But again: if you do it often, the Logitech
way (select a player, sync it to another player, switch to the next
player ...) might not be the most comfortable one.
So lets improve the popup for choosing players with options to group
players with drag'n'drop as you might already know it from another
iPhone App for Squeezeboxen.

SYNCING PLAYERS (VARIATION B)
But is this the right way to do syncing ? Some time ago someone posted
the following idea:
Why not define named Sync-Groups like 'Party Backyard', 'Party
Frontyard' where players are assigned (again with drag and drop).
You then can easily activate certain preconfigured Sync-Groups which
might be very handy if you often need different Sync-Groups.

Players would be allowed to be assigned to multiple Sync-Groups in the
configuration by the way.

(I'll add the votes of 'Variation A+B' together, to get an overall
count for a syncing feature)

MYSQUEEZEBOX.COM - INTEGRATION
Currently you need a local server for running SqueezePad.
Do you want me to add mysqueezebox.com support so that it works also
without a local server ?

TRACKSTAT RATINGS
Never used this feature myself - other Apps have this feature so it
might be important. Tell me with your votes !

CACHING OF ALBUM + ARTIST LISTS
Like on your real Logitech Devices Album and Artist lists are fetched
from the server each time you enter the menu.
This might be annoying for large libraries - so why not cache the list
(until the server does the next rescan possibly finding new
albums/artist).
The list could be presented much faster then !

ALBUM ART ONLY SCREEN
A screen filled with the cover art of your library. Sorta like the
example posted here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=560429postcount=202

BETTER SEARCH
Enter a search term and get a combined search for
artists/albums/titles.

SOMETHING ELSE
If you think your most important feature is not in the list, vote here
and comment in this thread.
If this point gets enough votes I'll start the poll again with
different options :D

2010-07-20 Thread bluegaspode

Hi SqueezePad Early Adopters :D

I'm very enthusiastic that you seem to like the App and didn't find any
severe issues yet.
Thanks a lot for all your valueable input that I'll comment on in this
posting.

In the meantime I set up a bug-tracking system
(www.stagessound.de/squeezepad) where you can see progress on different
parts and have a preview on fixed issues of the next version.

The following issues are fixed in version v1.2.0 already submitted to
Apple for review. This typically takes about 10 days currently.

 - I cant find the current playlist
 - In long alphabetized lists it would be handy to be able to jump to a
given letter, as you can in the iPhone's iPod app.
 - an Index as scrolling bar, for fast jumping to letters (like iPhone
 adressbook, a..b..c..d..)

I added a playlist menu item in the 'my music' menu. Its the menu you
know from the Squeezebox Touch.
Also in album and artists menu (and all other that provide index
information) you'll get section headers and a ribbon for fast
navigation to any place you like. Along with this there will be support
for context menu (i.e. for basic playlist management). The context menus
also give access to many of the features from erlands plugins.

I'll try to address the following issues in a v1.2.1 release.

 - Would be great to have a back button on the navigation menu, will
make it more similar to other apps. I realized pretty fast that I have
to be able to slide back but making the title as a back button can't
hurt. I also think it would be a bit user friendly as sliding back
sometimes misses, especially in lists which can be scrolled
 vertically.
 - I agree about providing an arrow for moving back on menus, as
suggested before. The backwards swipe is not so obvious because the
menu window doesn't move horizontally as you're starting to swipe. I
like the behavior of the article window in Reeder, for example, where
the window starts to move as you swipe back, but there's also a back
arrow if you don't want to swipe at all.
 - Prevent display sleep when playing.
 - The volume slider can be adjusted on a player where the digital
output is fixed at 100% (but the slider of course has no effect).
 - If you hit search but don't enter anything and then press the button
to hide the keyboard, I think the menu should go back instead of
 forward.
 - Spotify plugin browsing is OK, but will not play on any of them.
 - Did I mention you can't change the alarm volume?

I plan to finish this v1.2.1 release first week of august (so in two
weeks). Add again 10 days for apples review and if everything works out
it will come out around 19th of august. You can watch the progress of
this release here:
http://www.stagessound.de/squeezepad/roadmap_page.php?version_id=1

Some comments though to the Back Button: I don't want to spoil the
interface with too many buttons here and there (yet). I'll implement
that tapping the menu-title will go one level up. Along with the
swiping (which can be done on the title as well if one gets in trouble
with the table scrolling) this should give enough options for easy
navigation.

The following issues I put in the backlog for later evaluation so that
I won't forget these things.
All backlog items are tracked here:
http://www.stagessound.de/squeezepad/roadmap_page.php?version_id=2

 - Not too fond of using different font sizes in lists - kind of
 disturbs the clean user interface.
 - I'd love to have a portrait mode that showed big album cover and a
bit larger text so it's visible from the couch 2-3 meters away.
 - Darker background (perhaps with a texture).
 - Oh - and please lose that gradient background for something solid or
greyish (or make it user configurable)...
 - can i Change the Background in the Future? I would like black (like
 iPhoto)
 - I think it would be nice if the control buttons mirrored those of
SqueezePlay.

Just one further comment: Shuffle + Repeat options are available in the
settings-menu already. But having extra icons of course would be a nice
to add.

Strange. I don't have a napster account so I don't know how the server
is generating the menu.
For debugging purposes I'd need the
- cometd-menu response for the album list
- the cometd-request when you click an album
- and as a reference the cometd request when you try the same album
with squeezeplay.

Just attach the whole server log (with network.cometd-debugging

rest myself I guess.

If I am to get more performance I would immediately change to C2D or i5

Regarding cover art size, just take a look what iTunes does - would
like the same. Everything else with SBS is almost perfect, but forgive
me, using a Web interface instead of a local GUI is just, well, very
flexible and ok for general mobile access (still prefere iPeng anytime)
but nothing, really unusable if you sit in front of a laptop client and
try to dig through a very large library just with the web GUI. Not to
speak about lib re-organisation, drag-and-drop, playlist management,
etc... just really unusable. And yes, I would even pay money for a
native client like iTunes that accesses SBS directtly and *not* trough
some Ajax, Flash or anything like http.

Just my 0.02 for anyone spending his time on development.

So, I see iPeng for iPad to some extent as a solution to the native
client dilemma, hopefully it will be as instant and full hi-res as the
underlying technology allows, but it probably still won't be a full
 featured native client.

Celeron is one of the two rons to avoid. I have dell inspiron 5150
(not one of the rons)with 2.8 core 2. The only disadvantage is they
take more power than the current dual core or amd x2 machines.

A Celeron at 1.6 (with a single processor) is relatively retarded. It
will work quite well with only Vortexbox installed but winders is out
of the question.

Your request isn't unreasonable, but your argument is. Hyperbole
doesn't help your cause. Your first point about needing to ssh into
ANY of the SB devices is simply wrong. Static IPs are easily set
directly on the player menus of SB2, SB3/Classic, and Boom. They are
probably settable on SliMP3, SB1, and TP as well, but I don't know for
certain. On your latter point, it seems you've never stumbled onto a
Palm Pilot or Blackberry.

For me the various methods currently available for setting a static IP
are perfectly adequate -- even on the SBR, SBC, Radio, and Touch. I can
see how some people would want it to be easier, but I can also think of
enhancements that I believe deserve higher priority.

I have to agree, that it is a major design flaw to not have static ip
settings in any ethernet device, should not have passed alpha trails.
So it should not even be a bug for it.

Having said that, the device where this is really bad is the reciever,
net::udap is *not* perfectly adequate for a consumer device .

SSH is that perfectly adequate for a consumer device ? maybe for
linux and mac users, as you use any terminal for it, for windows user
this is not perfectly adequate as you have to install third party
software to be able to SSH, for example putty .

But SSH it's not hard to do and fulfills another glaring omission in
the setup menu available in some products.
Namely that you can not simply edit the network-settings as you see
fit, you have to reset the device and do the setup wizard again !? This
is also an obvious design flaw, this is maybe the real problem as static
ip is a special case of this.
But really it should be an advanced menu option on a squeezeplay
product.

But as they missed these self evident things in the design phase ,and
now they are with us as bugs, it is so that there is probably 100's off
other bugs that's needs more attention than this.

Why ? a tinkering user can actually fix static ip settings with some
workaround , some of the more serious problems can only be fixed by
the developers.

But I'm all for real static ip support, as the OP wanted to collects
such opinions in this tread. So my vote is added.

While I'm not against this there are a lot of other bugs that's more
important and with the limited amount of development resources Logitech
has dedicated to Squeezebox development, it's important to prioritize
the most important bugs. If development resources was unlimited or
there wasn't a workaround, the situation would be different. People
with static IP's knows what they are doing so some additional hassle

Please try to contact your server with safari (from the iPad). Does it

If not check the following:
- is your iPad connected via Wifi right now (mine is dropping the WiFi
connection every two hours, that's the main reason when I cannot
connect). Guess this should improve with the new iPad firmware, which I
didn't install yet
- if your iPad is connected via 3G I guess it also can't connect to

mentioned above.
- don't forget to configure the ip together with the port

From my point of view there are other more pressing bugs and

(beyond the simple Home menu options). As erland points out,
development resources are finite, and I don't see this one as a
