[slim] Ipeng playback- Flac streaming to Apple Tv 3 with airplay-quality?

2013-03-07 Thread nordvest

Hi,
I just discovered the amazing playback feature on Ipeng and now use it
to stream music to my apple tv with airplay.
A lot of my music is stored as Flac files and I was wondering which
quality they get played at when I stream them to the Apple tv from my
IPad 4 or Ipod touch g3. Do they playback natively or in a comparable
high qality format or do the files get transcoded to a lossy format?

Touch I see Connecting.../Buffering xx% displayed in the NP screen. In
the web UI it shows '128kbps CBR, OGG Internet Radio'.

Do you have any of the actual URLs for the Absolute Radio streams?

This is a good question, to which I'm determined to find the answer.

Apple TV can only work at 16 bit 48kbit/s. So all 'standard' CD red
book music will be transcoded, IMHO transcoded very crudely.

Apple Airport Express works at 16 bit 44.14kbit/s, therefore no
transcoding required.

Airplay works at 16 bit 44.14kbit/s so no transcoding for the wifi bit,
although no error recovery.

[slim] Which online services do you use (if any)?

2013-03-07 Thread simbo

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98255

Question: Which online services do you use?

- Deezer
- Internet Radio / TuneIn
- Last.fm
- MOG
- Pandora
- Rhapsody/Napster
- Slacker
- Spotify
- Other (i.e. one I've forgotten)
- NONE - I don't use any online services

With the recent discussions about the longevity of MySB and the impact
on online services, I thought we might take a gauge of how many people
use online services and which ones.

IF YOU DON'T USE ANY, PLEASE CHOOSE \NONE\ RATHER THAN NOT VOTING.

Note this only covers services that are available via your SB right now,
not ones that aren't supported (e.g. Google Music).

Because the sample rate is changed, and it's not an easy multiple
change, ALL bits will be altered, to try and replicate the same waveform
as the original 16bit 44.14kbit/s FLAC file. This will in theory be
lossless, as there is no attempt to reduce the content, but in reality
it will not result in identical audio signals.

So the quality will be somewhat altered because of the resampling and
that can lead to some degrading but there is no intentional
downgrading. It will bew better than f.ex mp3 in 192/256kb?

It would resume if you un-paused within a few minutes. But if you leave it
paused for an hour, it would restart the stream.

[slim] Netgear extender streaming Squeezecentre

2013-03-07 Thread heffa

Ok, interesting query for those adept with pushing a stream connection.
I'm running SqueezeCentre(LogitechMC) on my HTPC/server system in my
house, then a 'Netgear WN3500RP Range Extender'
in my backyard workshop, which in turn feeds the Squeezebox3 player in
the bungalow at the back of the property.
The Extender has a 3.5mm jack to stream audio from Netgear Genie,
Airplay or Apple devices. So, if I hook up an amp unit in the workshop,
can anyone think of a way I could stream from Squeezecentre to the
Extender?

The buffered time gets really long for lossy formats I would not be
surprised if the player buffer holds over a minute , try stop instead
orf pause then i think the stream will reinitiate .

Its not completely clear how the DLNA works on the Extender, but have
you tried the UPnP/DLNA plugin on Squeezecentre? Though you will loose

When you pasuse a stream - the TCP connection stays up. Most radio
stations (especially live/continuous vs short/fxied length programs)
will reset the TCP connection after x minutes and so a few minutes of
the stream may remain in the buffer. Some stations do nor seem to
reset the TCP connection and so the pause seems to work for a long time.

Yes stop is holding pause , and the ir remote for Touch also has stop .
Whern holding pause long enough you see a stop symbol instead of a pause
symbol .

On local files the difference is that a stopped track starts from the
begining and pause is pause .

Re: [slim] Ipeng playback- Flac streaming to Apple Tv 3 with airplay-quality?

2013-03-07 Thread pippin

I've answer in the iPeng service thread.
The general answer is: it's all lossless up to the AppleTV where the
re-sampling happens.
Actually as of my experience I don't think the re sampling algorithm in
the AppleTV is bad. I haven't tested it in detail but it's running iOS
and I know under iOS nobody ever complained in the past (until last
summer) when iPeng still made iOS downsample all streams to 44.1/16 and
then would make it upsample back to 48/24, not even our audiophile
friends here noticed it back then :)

Today, of course, iPeng no longer does that but handled everything
bit-perfectly.

- Rhapsody/Napster
- Slacker
- Spotify
- Other (i.e. one I've forgotten)

I voted. I subscribe to both MOG and Rhapsody, using their basic
US$5/month plans. Why do I have both? It started as a comparison between
the two (I also tried Spotify, and dropped it because I didn't like the
interface as well, even with triode's plugin). Now it's laziness about
dropping one, because it's rare that I find an album that's on one
service but not the other. I've been meaning to drop Rhapsody because it
won't play on my iPad or iPod via the iPeng SB player app. But now that
Beats has acquired MOG I may wait a bit longer and see what they do with
it.

I also have a free Pandora account, but I don't use it much. On the
other hand, internet radio probably gets more air time than anything
else in our house. Mostly its the local NPR station (WAMU) and Radio
Paradise. Without those (especially NPR) I'd have to rethink at least
part of our current SB deployment, especially the SB2 in the kitchen and
SB Radio in the bedroom.

the reality, the reason being that there are a lot of users out there
who only use their Squeezebox for internet radio but never reads this

- None is going to get a lot higher result in this vote than the

community using their Squeezebox only for local music this is not as
common among users who never reads this forum who often use their
Squeezebox mainly for internet radio or online services.

Both good points, although I'm interested to see if the local yokels

numerous as they are vocal* ;-)

* yes, they are vocal local yokels.

OK. Having a couple of problems with the app :(

I'm using this on a 10 android tablet.

 _*1._Navigating_lists*_
When confronted with a list of thousands of artists, albums or tracks,
you obviously want to be able to scroll quicky. I find the tiny scroll
widget on the right unfriendly and unreliable.

So you have to scroll the list for the widget to appear, and then you
have about 1-2 second to put a finger on it to use it. Miss that and
you're probably just going to click a track by accident.
This alphabetic scroll bar is brilliant, and one of the main attractions
of the app. I really have no problem with it at all, but there you go -
we are all different! Logitech's own app has a permanent scroll bar, try
that.

 _*2._Playing_or_adding_to_play_list*_
So you've got a load of tracks on the screen, and you want to add them
to the playlist. You have to go into each one individually, and then
selected + Add to Playlist. Why not have two buttons next to each
entry? A + to add to playlist, and a to play now? I can see your point,
but the current arrangement means less clutter on
the screen and less chance of accidentally pressing the wrong option.

 _*4._Reorganising_Playlist*_
To drag a track into a different position/order, you have to hold the
album art. This is tricky if you're right handed as you obscure your
entire view. This is a great function I have not seen on the other SB apps,
 and I
don't find it tricky at all (I am right handed). Sure, part of the item
is obscured as you drag it but you can see the whole line move, so no
biggie. Perhaps you have big fingers or poor fine motor skills?

 _*5._Add_options_to_Playlist*_
Similar to 2, why not have a cross to remove an item from a play list
displayed towards the end of each line, so you can remove an item with a
single click? Really, what is this one about? At the moment it is a two
 click job
and you want to make it a one click job? Is that really so
frustrating?

I use this on the tiniest Android touch screen phone and those extra
options would definitely create an issue with accidentally touching the
wrong option. For small phone use this app is laid out very well. The
developer could create a different app for tablets. Maybe you should
ask nicely!

Great album. Some songs almost psychedelic. Organ/keyboard work much

2013-03-07 Thread jimbobvfr400

The only one of the points I agree with is adding to the play list. I
really like the way squeeze Commander does this. There's a button at the
top which changes what clicking on a track does. So you can set it to
play, add to end or play next. Makes adding tracks to play list very
easy. I hate it when I accidentally click instead of holding and start a
track playing and loose all the tracks I've already added to a play
list.

All of which again just proves the point that a good phone UI and a good
tablet UI have to look fundamentally different.
You simply have very different requirements. On the phone you really
have to max out on saving screen estate while its relatively easy to use
simple single-touch gestures
On a tablet you want to provide more controls and while single-touch
gestures are less precise you can also use multi-touch gestures or more
complex ones.

 accidentally
scroll off the screen, means if you do accidentally lose 'grip' of it as
you move up/down/stop, you are left with a finger on a track and not
scrolling any more. This is an unnecessary frustration.

I'd suggest an option to have the the scroll bar perminantly available
down the right part of the screen. So rather than having to scroll to
grab it, you can just place your finger where ever you like on it over
the vertical range (or slide it) to get to your desired position.

Want to get to the end of the list? At the moment you have to scroll,
grab the scroll widget that's now appeared, and then drag it to the
bottom. With my sugestion you'd just place your finger at the bottom of
the scroll widget. Done! If you want to instead scroll through your
music, just slide your finger up and down the scroll bar...

Simple, quicker, easier. Surely that's what we want?

By all means have an option to behave this alternative (simpler) way
only if you want to dedicate a tiny part of the screen to constantly
displayed scroll widgets.

TheLastMan wrote:
Logitech's own app has a permanent scroll bar, try that.It does in deed, and

predictably for me.

TheLastMan wrote:
I can see your point, but the current arrangement means less clutter on

but with a large screen there's no reason not to offer option to
immediately play, add to play list etc on each song.

Again, an option to do this would be great and improve the speed of the
app IMHO.

This is a great function I have not seen on the other SB apps, and I
don't find it tricky at all (I am right handed). Sure, part of the item
is obscured as you drag it but you can see the whole line move, so no
biggie. Perhaps you have big fingers or poor fine motor skills?Yes, it's one
of my main prerequisites for buying this SB controller!
It's great you can pick up a song in your playlist and re-order it, but
its not intuitive that you have to grab it by the far left of the line.

I suspect the only reason this magic area exists is because holding
a line (which you'd do for a drag'n'drop) opens up the sub options. I'd
argue this isn't necessary, as you can get to the sub options (quicker)
by clicking the arrow at the far right of the line. Personally I'd think
the whole/majority of the line should work the same. ie: You should be
able to drag an drop a song by grabbing hold of the line, and not just a
magical area to the far left.

My instinct is to grab the middle/end of the title... Which does not
work of course. This is a minor thing though!

Really, what is this one about? At the moment it is a two click job and
you want to make it a one click job? Is that really so frustrating?Agreed,
it's minor, but I guess it's more of a general example. Given a
bigger screen, there's more space available, so some of the main option
currently tucked away in sub menus could be offered on each line.

The most likely thing you want to do with a track in your playlist is:-
a) Drag and drop it. (Which you can do)
b) Play it now. (Single click)
c) Remove it.

To do (c) you have to hold the line, or click at the end of the line,
and then you're presented with a screenful of options/information... In
the middle of which is X Remove from playlist. Simply pressed a
dedicated X towards the end of the line would be nice. eg: I could
remove 5 tracks in less than a second that way.

I use this on the tiniest Android touch screen phone and those extra
options would definitely create an issue with accidentally touching the
wrong option. For small phone use this app is laid out very well.Absoluetly
agreed, and that's why I mentioned at the start we're talking
about a full size tablet.

As I said previously, most of these are just (personal)
annoyances/preferences, but (1) with the scroller widget really is
painful for me. Just this evening, I was scrolling through a list of
tracks, paused to see the list, and voila the widget was 'ungrasped',
disappeared, an then as my finger is over a song I get the options
appear for this track, which of course I don't want. Not only am I now
in sub options I don't want to be in, but I've even lost widget that's
now off the screen. Just have an option to leave a dedicated scroller on
the right pllleesse!

Not at all. Most of my suggestions are minor annoyance. The scroller

perminent scroller widget down the right - when necessary - it would
allow quicker and more reliable navigation for a tiny tiny fraction of
the screen space.

Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!

2013-03-07 Thread NeilF

Another suggestion? - When you return to your playlist, return to the
view you were last in.

So I'm building up a playlist, and can see the 5 tracks in it... I
return to my search, add another few tracks and go back to my playlist
(by clicking at the bottom of the screen). But by default it returns me
to the now playing screen, instead of the playlist screen I was last
on.

So I find every time I return to my playlist (by clicking at the bottom
of the screen), the first I then have to do is click the top of the
screen to go to my playlist.

Or is there a way to go directly to the playlist without going
unnecessarily through the Now Playing screen.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squeezeslave: 1.2 released

2013-03-07 Thread bitbanger

@Ralphy

I've been tinkering a bit with squeezeslave on the raspberry Pi, and
found it useful to extend the squeezeslave command line options to allow
the lcdd hostname to be passed in on the command line. Currently, the
lcdproc daemon is hard-wired to be found on localhost. I have added it
as -E command line switch. This allows you to run an LCD with lcdproc
on a different host than where squeezeslave is actually running. Since
the raspberry pi makes a dandy remote lcdproc server, I thought it would
be fun to put one on the coffee table, and run squeezeslave on another
host nearer to the stereo equipment. It works really well!

I'm a bit of a hack in C land, but I believe it might be worthy to be
committed to the main line with review. I've posted a patch file on
dropbox but will have to post again due to this forum's link posting
rules.

It's based on the currently available revision 394
