LMS is the best music server software out there.

Just install it and forget it.

It's extremely stable and easy to use.

No, I'm not kidding.

Since you already have a Pi+PCM2704 setup, you also have SPDIF

Re: [slim] How do you want to create/manage playlists ?

2013-04-19 Thread socistep

1. What kind of device would you like to use when creating the playlists
?
- A computer
- A tablet
- A smart phone
- A Logitech Controller, Radio or Touch display
- A IR remote
- Something else

My preference would be to use tablet/smart phone followed by the SB
players themsleves and finally a computer, I'm looking for ease of use
playlists over spending a long time creating and deciding what should be
in it

2. How do you decide what should be part of a playlist ?
- By selecting the individual tracks you want to include
- By selecting the albums you want to include
- By selecting the artists you want to include
- By automatically selecting 100 tracks that matches some search
criteria (genre, ratings, ...)
- Something else

I listen to 2 types of playlists

1) album playlists - mainly new music, in this case I'll add an album
(either local or on spotify) and then queue up another one with 'add to
end'
2) dynamic/smart playlists - I've got various playlists set up using
erlands dynamic playlists based on 'top rated' and then the smartmix
playlist, these are both heavily used for more casual listening with
variations of decades, genre etc.

3. How do you decide which order the tracks should have in the playlist
?
- Random ordered tracks
- Random ordered albums
- Drag and drop albums to put them into the right order
- Drag and drop tracks to put them into the right order
- Something else

See above

4. What's the most frustrating limitation with SBS/LMS playlist
management today ?
- That it doesn't support relative paths in playlist files which are
scanned
- That it's too hard to reorder tracks in existing playlists
- That it's too hard to create completely new playlists
- Something else

There is no native smart playlist from the web interface/phone
controller, so for example when I loaded music into google music it
created some auto playlists, whereas with SB i have had to set up
various plugins/ratings/mixes although the results are good

The web interface is very limited, it would be great if controllers had
the ability to drag and drop or suggest tracks etc.

5. What kind of device would you like to use when modifying existing
playlists ?
- A computer
- A tablet
- A smart phone
- A Logitech Controller, Radio or Touch display
- A IR remote
- Something else

don't really use static playlists

6. What kind of modifications do you usually do on already existing
playlists ?
- Reorder tracks in the playlist
- Remove tracks, albums or artists from the playlist
- Add new tracks, albums or artists to the playlist
- Something else

see above

Is there anything else than the above you feel is important to take into
consideration if anyone would like to improve the playlist management ?

The concept of LMS is in my opinion the greatest strength of the system
and what set it apart from the competition (many of which withered and
died long before SB). It is also the reason I went for SB instead of any
of the other systems. The actual implementation of LMS may have left
something to desire in the stability department though.

Correct, all TOSLINK transmitters that I know about take a standard
digital input and have a builtin LED driver circuit. I don't know of any
that bring the LED pins out directly. That 22.2 ohm resistor is just a
standard thing used to slightly cut down the rise time of the signal to
cut down on ringing when driving a load.

The cap between VCC and GND is important, but I'm not as sure about the
 necessity of the ferrite bead.

BTW for removing stubborn parts on boards you might want to try ChipQuik
solder. It is sold for removing SMD parts but it works just as well for
through hole ones as well. It is a solder with a super low melting
point, melt blobs of it over the pins and keep the iron moving between
blobs, it will dissolve the original solder and stay liquid long enough
for you to pull the part off. After you get the part off use solder wick
etc. to make sure you get all of this off the board before soldering a
 new part.

This having it wrong on wandboard just reinforces my findings, there is
a curse on TOSLINK transmitters. I have NEVER put one on a board that
turned out right the first time. Including the SWAMP05. I know it's
going to turn out wrong so I quadruple check the spec sheets to make
SURE I get it hooked up right, and it still turns out wrong. And here
the wandboard guys did it as well. It's got to be a curse. We can do 314
pin monster connectors right, 900 pin cpus right, but these simple
little 3 terminal devices confound us all. It doesn't make sense.

Actually I think it's the spec sheets. The one for the part on SWAMP05
has a table that says pin 3 is ground, and the schematic shows pin 1
connected to ground. Another I looked at shows the pins being labeled 1
2 3 in line on the physical drawing, but when listing the functions in a
table they list 1 3 2. If you are not VERY careful in reading this you
can get it backwards. It's sloppy spec sheets that I think are at the
root of the curse. But it's sort of nice to know that I'm not the only
 one to have this problem.

 John S.

It is always the simple things that seem to go wrong on the schematic
and PCB layout. Number 1 mistake has to be connector reversal.
I finally tracked down a copy of the datasheet for the KYT-1150A part
that is used on the Wandboard and confirmed that the pinout on the
Wandboard is indeed incorrect for this part.

Correct, I did lookup a few toslink datasheets and they all take input
without a resistor. R345 can be removed without issues.

In the mean time I have succeeded in removing the toslink transmitter.
The “hard way” wasn’t that hard after all; but I’m not putting it back
on the wandboard. I started creating a smaller board that will
accommodate the toslink transmitter and a coax spdif out. To be
continued…

I'd like:
* to have the possibility to use a Lyrics screensaver. Only iPeng app

follow the song you are listening!
* to have the possibility to edit the tag from smartphone or tablet.
Don't like to use foobar that is only windows. Easy simple tagging
should be possible from any device while listening
* to have possibility to rate a song while playing it (and write rating
in the tag as if the app disappears, so does the rating, cf
squeezecenter)
* Use a search and filter type of interface (cf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faceted_search). Browsing static
hierarchies is slow and boring, especially if you have to create those
in advance (cf custom browse or even playlists). Navigation should be
highly dynamic. Look at Plex app. Sort capability should be advanced too
(eg sort artists by number of albums)

[slim] How to delete a Genre tag?

2013-04-19 Thread Bert57

During tagging I misspelled Acoustic as Accoustic while tagging an

but when I go to genre in LMS the accoustic tag is still there with
the album. Even though I have corrected the tag for the album to be
Acoustic the album only shows only under the genre Accoustic.

There are a couple of other misspelled genre tags that I would like to
delete along with accoustic but I have been unable to find a way to
delete these genre tags.

Have cleared and rescanned 3 times thinking the scan might just have
missed the change but no luck. Checked the tags with mp3tag extended
tags and it looks right. Also checked with foobar 2000 and again seemed
ok.

Any suggestions of what to try?

[slim] Listening squeezebox music in the living room without any squeezebox hardware!

2013-04-19 Thread Chrobrego

...but still using the free squeezebox server. I guess it was high time
for Logitech to abandon the squeezebox business...
So here is my prefered setup:
* A NAS with Squeezebox Server installed
* An iPod touch with iPeng
* An Airplay compatible receiver (which connect to speakers). In my case
Marantz NR-1603

Big advantages:
1) you spare two devices: a) Squeezebox receiver or Touch + b) The
receiver remote control (no need to select the source on the amplifier
wit that solution)
2) That is extremely convenient to use. With the iPod you select and
play the music with iPeng (used as player) and it is sent to the
receiver with Airplay. The receiver in stand-by will automatically turn
on and output the sound to the living room speakers.

Have you tried such setup, what do you think?

Re: [slim] Listening squeezebox music in the living room without any squeezebox hardware!

So here is my prefered setup:
 * A NAS with Squeezebox Server installed
 * An iPod touch with iPeng
 * An Airplay compatible receiver (which connect to speakers). In my case
 Marantz NR-1603

 Big advantages:
 1) you spare two devices: a) Squeezebox receiver or Touch + b) The
receiver remote control (no need to select the source on the amplifier
 wit that solution)
 2) That is extremely convenient to use. With the iPod you select and
play the music with iPeng (used as player) and it is sent to the
receiver with Airplay. The receiver in stand-by will automatically turn
on and output the sound to the living room speakers.

Have you tried such setup, what do you think?

I'm a bit confused as to what you are asking. You can have a NAS with
SbS (or LMS) installed in a different room. You can control it all with
iPeng and touch, but you'll still need some bit of hardware connected to
your Marantz. A sb touch, receiver, SB3, etc. I don't think you can
send to an airplay device with SbS/LMS. But i could be wrong here.

If you really want to upload your music to a cloud server, what's the
 reason ?
Do you want to have it accessible outside the home or are you just
looking for a solution without a need to have a computer powered or is
 it something else ?

I would like to upload my music to the cloud to have access to it
without running a local server as well as having another backup.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like your product will act as some
kind of portal for music services that can be accessed by Squeezebox as
well as other platforms running ickstream? If that's the case then
access to my own library in addition to the internet music services
within the same environment would be fantastic. This is part of the
reason I enjoy the squeezebox so much - my music, internet radio,
pandora and spotify all available with a few taps on my iphone running
ipeng. Access outside the home would be the cherry on top but I
understand it is possible currently with LMS and Ipeng playback and I
still haven't bothered to set that up yet.

[slim] Wanted - Members with XML Java Skills

2013-04-19 Thread kouta

In relation to his thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?98394-NEW-Netgear-ReadyNAS-and-Squeezebox

We are looking for people with XML Java skills who can make a start on
the 'add on' for the new operating system (OS6) for the new Netgear
ReadyNas line. Mherger from Logitech has offered to help so if you have
skills in this area please post your interest.

So far there has been over 1300 views of the above thread so I'm
assuming there is a fair bit of interest in the topic. As an incentive I
am prepared to pay a small fee for a anyone who can produce a working
add on. (If 1000 people are prepared to pay $5-$10 that might be a good
incentive for someone to undertake this project). Any other members who
are also prepared to pay please post your interest.

I believe the [iPod + iPeng] combo is the remote AND the player, sending
the music to the receiver via AirPlay.

Yes, that is right. I have done this using the analogue out on an
Airport Express. Works well but IMHO the sound quality was not as good
as a Squeezebox. I have be meaning to try it using the optical out into
my DAC.

 I'd like:
 * to have the possibility to use a Lyrics screensaver. Only iPeng app
offers this currently. The lyrics (or whatever tag you display) should
follow the song you are listening!
 * to have the possibility to edit the tag from smartphone or tablet.
Don't like to use foobar that is only windows. Easy simple tagging
should be possible from any device while listening
 * to have possibility to rate a song while playing it (and write rating
in the tag as if the app disappears, so does the rating, cf
 squeezecenter)
 * Use a search and filter type of interface (cf
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faceted_search). Browsing static
hierarchies is slow and boring, especially if you have to create those
in advance (cf custom browse or even playlists). Navigation should be
highly dynamic. Look at Plex app. Sort capability should be advanced too
(eg sort artists by number of albums)

+1 yes I for example would like to fix whole genres or artist when
spotted , for example if I see Pop and pop I would like to just tell the
interface that pop=Pop and then it fixes these tags or if I find an
artist with several spelling alternatives I would also just opt to keep
one and the tags are amended in the background .
Yes and really easy rating directly when playing ,by track album or
artist .

pippin wrote:
Well, all the dynamic searching features will definitely require a
different server (or a very powerful search plugin), LMS definitely is
too slow for it, even on a powerful machine, let alone on a NAS.
The same is probably true for most online services.

This is understandable , but all improvements over LMS normal search is
welcome , some tolerance to spelling errors for example .
