Re: [slim] Squeezebox not working on ethernet, works on wireless

2009-01-01 Thread Andyb01

Fair enough but - for the record - I am fairly certain an ethernet
switch would have solved the problem. The issue is something to do
with the speed of the respective ethernet ports and on the wired SB it
is only 10Mbps and the homeplugs run faster than this (usually up to
85Mbps). Since using the switch I have had no probs whatsoever.

Ah - finding a small switch was something I didn't resolve, opting for
the Netgear FS605 in the end. Luckily I had a spare mains socket and
could hide it behind the cabinet so it is unseen. A flashing ethernet
switch is not an ornament that Mrs Andyb01 would tolerate on show in

Re: [slim] Squeezebox not working on ethernet, works on wireless

2008-12-30 Thread Andyb01

I had a problem like this - could not detect DHCP with a homeplug and
wouldn't work on a fixed IP either using a DG834 router. In the end
fixed by adding an ethernet switch (Netgear FS605) between the SB and
the homeplug and then worked like a charm ever since.

Might help

[slim] SqueezeCenter Locks up with IE7

2008-08-10 Thread Andyb01

Currently running SC 7.0.1 - 19705 and firmware 88 on 32 bit Vista with
MSIE 7.0.6. When I open SC the page just locks up, clicks don't do
anything, page cannot be closed and IE has to be crashed in task
manager to exit. SC works OK in Firefox and Safari so this is clearly
some kind of IE clash.

Have tried cleaning the IE clash to no effect - any other ideas?

Re: [slim] Where does everyone buy their online music from?

2007-05-26 Thread Andyb01

I've bought mainly from iTunes but the DRM is a real pain as tracks have
to be burned to CD before they can be converted. A further issue with
iTunes is that the output signal is really low and I always have to rip
to wav and amplify in Audacity before ripping to mp3 and that's quite a
disincentive! Have tried tweaking loads of settings in iTunes but
can't get round this problem so if anyone knows a solution then please
post!

I don't really think downloads offer value for money - better off with
CDs at least you don't have to back them up!!

Fewer cables and untidy racks of CDs - happy woman!

However - won't tolerate speaker stands (God have I tried) - so my
bookshelf speakers are currently directing sound from the under mounted
bass port straight into a wooden floor (although they are on short
spikes). I can live with it but it's frustrating knowing how much
better they could sound by raising them off the floor a tad.

All that said - I doubt she would use it without me or the kids there -
she did complain once that it wasn't working - I tried to point out
helpfully that it was also necessary to turn the amp on - this was a
mistake it appears. I should have just 'fixed' it quietly.

Re: [slim] Album Art Crashes SServer

2007-05-09 Thread Andyb01

This has been an ongoing problem for me where gallery view crashes
slimserver at certain albums and detailed investigation shows the cause
of this to be large image files. Some of my old albums were ripped from
vinyl and - unable to obtain album art - I scanned in the images. This
resulted in fairly large image files (1.5 - 2Mb) and it's these that
crash slimserver as soon as it hits them. Having now identified and
removed the six offending images all is now well (I have simply
replaced them with some simple covers I knocked up in a graphics
package).

Thanks to the Slimserver tech support in helping isolate the specific
file causing the problem and I then made the link as the next crash was
also a scanned file.

Hope this helps anyone else having a similar problem

[slim] iTunes Track Volume

2007-02-04 Thread Andyb01

When I purchase tracks off iTunes, the volume of the M4P files and the
subsequent wav files that they create are well below the 0dB threshold;
which results in mp3 files that are far quieter than those ripped from
audio CDs. I get around this by importing the wavs into Audacity and
then amplifying the level to around -0.5dB and then re-exporting to wav
before ripping to mp3. Fortunately I don't buy too much material off
iTunes as this is a bit of a long winded process. I also don't link my
iTunes library with my SB as I prefer to organise my own library
files.

Any idea whether iTunes tracks are just quiet or is there a simpler and
quicker way I can fix this?

Cheers

Question: Do you use your Slim Devices equipment wired or wirelessly?

- All wired
- All wirelessly
- I have several units, some operate wired, some wireless

I started my home network with wireless (luckily before I bought a SB)
and it drove me round the twist with dropped connections and poor
signal. I then discovered homeplugs and sold the whole set of wireless
kit on eBay and replaced it with wired and added a SB. Never fails - I
would never consider wireless again. Mains networking is so
maintenance free in comparison - you plug it in and it just er -
works.

[slim] Re: Any Digital Piano Owners Out There?

2006-12-17 Thread Andyb01

I bought a Roland HP137 (entry level) for around £800 new about four
years ago and I also looked at Yamaha clavs. At that time the Clavs
had the edge in the middle three octaves but over all the range the
Roland had a slightly crisper and brighter sound where as the Clav was
a bit muddier imo. However digital pianos have really come on in the
last few years and it really is a matter of taste but go to a decent
music shop to try and go in the week when they're not busy and the
resident keyboard expert is at work.

If you're buying it as a first instrument (i.e. to learn with) some
piano teachers are still dismissive of digitals and it's true in a
sense that you can't as easily get the full range of expression that
you can in an acoustic piano but you do get the advantage of headphones
for silent practise ;-)

But now you get progressive hammer action, true half pedal, sostenuto
and so on as well as a wealth of other sounds and often a built in
metronome too. If your 14 y/o is computer literate (are there any that
aren't?) then get one with a MIDI interface and hook it to your PC or
MAC and get a copy of Sonar HomeStudio or GarageBand and they will only
be limited by their own imagination and your budget!!

Make sure you go for 64 note polyphony as a minimum or you can lose
notes for long or complex passages with lots of sustain and avoid
anything made by Casio (they really should have stuck to making digital
watches).

As an alternative to a full DP which is a hefty bit of kit also look at
portable stage pianos like a Yamaha P80 but you do need an amplifier to
get sound out of these.

These sites might help as a good source of info:

http://www.starland.co.uk/sections.asp?head=Pianos+%26+Digital+Pianos

http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Keyboard+And+MIDI/all/

Search harmony sentral for the Rolands and Clavs - quite a few have
been reviewed.

One final thing - be sure to get one with a key cover - my gorgeous 9
year old (then 5) thought it would be a hoot to (accidentally) pour
tomato ketchup onto his Dad's brand new piano. Despite being
professionally cleaned twice it still sticks a bit. Good job I love
him more than the piano - he will however never ever be allowed to
forget it - lol

Hope some of this helps

Well I realise it was a long shot - there was a tagging error with the
piece of album art in question at the point it starts failing so I have
re-tagged this and all the files using the extended tags in mp3tag and
done a clear / rescan but the problem persists. Not a word from tech
support in the mean time.

I can try splitting the library as suggested but not sure where that
gets me either if it simply recurs when I re-combine it as SB can only
search one music destination and I have my files listed in folders by
artist and by album beneath that.

Odd that it has suddenly become a problem after previously working

2006-11-23 Thread Andyb01

Odd one this - been working fine for weeks on one of the nightly builds
and now when I click gallery view, the first page loads fine and then
any subsequent page dispplays a few covers then nothing and shuts down

Bizarre or what. I am installing the latest build to try although
having to uninstall in safe mode as 6.5 uninstall doesn't do a very
thorough job.

Have emailed tech support on this so will post if I get a fix. In the
meantime if anyone can advise then please do.

Recently moved to IE7 in the last week or so but as this affect Mozilla
too that can't be the problem.

OK

My album art library works by the presence of a 'cover.jpg' file in
each folder and that has worked so far. I did have an initial problem
with two albums displaying the same art work and was able to correct
this by using the extended tags in MP3Tag but the thought of doing it
for a couple of thousand files or so doesn't inspire - especially when
it may not even solve the problem.

Sounds like I'm stuck with it then. Not that it actually matters

I'll see what tech support turn up. Appreciate you taking the time out

[slim] Re: 6.5.0 and cover art strangeness

2006-09-29 Thread Andyb01

I'm just starting with my Squeezebox (running Slimserver 6.5) and have
obtained the album art from Album Art Aggregator and ripped the CDs
using iTunes. Exactly the same problem as others - the album art is
there in the detail view but not in the thumbnail gallery. Would love
to know a fix but no idea where to find these tags I am supposed to be
editing. Still on a bit of a learning curve.

Cheers

Andy
