Re: [slim] Squeezebox not working on ethernet, works on wireless
Fair enough but - for the record - I am fairly certain an ethernet switch would have solved the problem. The issue is something to do with the speed of the respective ethernet ports and on the wired SB it is only 10Mbps and the homeplugs run faster than this (usually up to 85Mbps). Since using the switch I have had no probs whatsoever. Andy -- Andyb01 Wired squeezebox, WinXP SP2, SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 - 19705, Player Firmware Version: 88 on Vista Ultimte 32 bit. Re: [slim] Where does everyone buy their online music from?
I've bought mainly from iTunes but the DRM is a real pain as tracks have to be burned to CD before they can be converted. A further issue with iTunes is that the output signal is really low and I always have to rip to wav and amplify in Audacity before ripping to mp3 and that's quite a disincentive! Re: [slim] Album Art Crashes SServer
This has been an ongoing problem for me where gallery view crashes slimserver at certain albums and detailed investigation shows the cause of this to be large image files. Some of my old albums were ripped from vinyl and - unable to obtain album art - I scanned in the images. This resulted in fairly large image files (1.5 - 2Mb) and it's these that crash slimserver as soon as it hits them. Having now identified and removed the six offending images all is now well (I have simply replaced them with some simple covers I knocked up in a graphics package). Thanks to the Slimserver tech support in helping isolate the specific file causing the problem and I then made the link as the next crash was also a scanned file. [slim] iTunes Track Volume
When I purchase tracks off iTunes, the volume of the M4P files and the subsequent wav files that they create are well below the 0dB threshold; which results in mp3 files that are far quieter than those ripped from audio CDs. I get around this by importing the wavs into Audacity and then amplifying the level to around -0.5dB and then re-exporting to wav before ripping to mp3. Fortunately I don't buy too much material off iTunes as this is a bit of a long winded process. I also don't link my iTunes library with my SB as I prefer to organise my own library files. Any idea whether iTunes tracks are just quiet or is there a simpler and quicker way I can fix this? [slim] Re: Any Digital Piano Owners Out There?
I bought a Roland HP137 (entry level) for around £800 new about four years ago and I also looked at Yamaha clavs. At that time the Clavs had the edge in the middle three octaves but over all the range the Roland had a slightly crisper and brighter sound where as the Clav was a bit muddier imo. However digital pianos have really come on in the last few years and it really is a matter of taste but go to a decent music shop to try and go in the week when they're not busy and the resident keyboard expert is at work. If you're buying it as a first instrument (i.e. to learn with) some piano teachers are still dismissive of digitals and it's true in a sense that you can't as easily get the full range of expression that you can in an acoustic piano but you do get the advantage of headphones for silent practise ;-) But now you get progressive hammer action, true half pedal, sostenuto and so on as well as a wealth of other sounds and often a built in metronome too. If your 14 y/o is computer literate (are there any that aren't?) then get one with a MIDI interface and hook it to your PC or MAC and get a copy of Sonar HomeStudio or GarageBand and they will only be limited by their own imagination and your budget!! Make sure you go for 64 note polyphony as a minimum or you can lose notes for long or complex passages with lots of sustain and avoid anything made by Casio (they really should have stuck to making digital watches). As an alternative to a full DP which is a hefty bit of kit also look at portable stage pianos like a Yamaha P80 but you do need an amplifier to get sound out of these. These sites might help as a good source of info: http://www.starland.co.uk/sections.asp?head=Pianos+%26+Digital+Pianos http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Keyboard+And+MIDI/all/ Search harmony sentral for the Rolands and Clavs - quite a few have been reviewed. One final thing - be sure to get one with a key cover - my gorgeous 9 year old (then 5) thought it would be a hoot to (accidentally) pour tomato ketchup onto his Dad's brand new piano. Despite being professionally cleaned twice it still sticks a bit. Good job I love him more than the piano - he will however never ever be allowed to forget it - lol Hope some of this helps Andy -- Andyb01 Wired squeezebox, WinXP SP2, SlimServer 6.5 v 2006-11-23, Player Firmware Version: 69 Andyb01's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7734 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30680 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
