[slim] Interaction between two Squeezeboxes

2006-05-17 Thread Bart

Because my kitchen is quite large and the Squeezebox screen is so small
I have difficulty seeing the screen from one end of the kitchen.
I would really like a larger screen and have asked before whether the
VFD can be replaced with a larger off-the-shelf item.
As this is not an option I have now bought another Squeezebox (my
fourth) to put at the other end of the kitchen - which brings me to my
problem.
More often than not the two Squeezeboxes will both pick up the signal
from the remote, but not consistently. This causes havoc with the
menus, searching etc. Is there a way to make other Squeezeboxes on the
network ignore the remote once one Squeezebox has picked up the signal?

happy.

IIRC, only 4 of the 8 wires in an ethernet cable are used, so you could
use the other 4 instead of only using 2, and you'd drop your voltage
 drop roughly in half.
But I have to say this isn't a really good idea. Having a resistor in
series with your power supply is going to introduce noise in your audio
 out.
I shall try using all the wires, although it is working now, using the
speaker wires. The audio on this squeezebox is not connected, only one
is conected and the others are synchronised to that, so I wouldn't
notice any noise in the audio out...

Is this why my attempts at POE have not worked? I have wired up a

am sending the current across with an almost imperceptible voltage
drop. Every device I connect (PC, clock radio, phone charger) works as

The connections between the base module and modules 2 3 should be
done with CAT5 cables (power and signal) to facilitate devices in
 seperate locations.

Absolutely! I have three Squeezeboxes in different rooms and two
amplifiers in the boiler room - hence I have huge audio cables running
back to the boiler room, degrading the signal and restricting where I
can put the Squeezeboxes.

[slim] Missing accented characters again

2006-03-13 Thread Bart

Has the missing accented characters bug reappeared?
I know that at one stage I was able to see most of the tracks
containing accented characters - but now they are missing again.
I am using MusicIP Mixer 1.6b2 to import the tracks into Slimserver
6.5b1 - 6569 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 but I had the same problem with
Musicmagicmixer 1.5 and Slimserver 6.2.1 (I installed the latest
versions of each in an attempt to fix the problem)
I have deleted the MusicIP Mixer .m3lib file and rescanned and then I
have deleted the Slimserver cache and re-imported.

[slim] How to configure Autodisplay

2006-02-25 Thread Bart

I have posted before, and made an enhancement request, to get the player
to dim it's display at night and brighten it again in the morning. I
have a Squeeebox in the bedroom, with some film over the display so
that it is dim enough at night not to be distracting but still bright
enough to show the time. However it is too dim to see in the morning,
so I have to press Brightness several times every morning. I have
downloaded the Autodisplay plugin but I cannot see how to make it work
- I was hoping that if I got it to work then it would be possible to
get it to dim the display instead of turning it off. I have put it in
the correct place and it appears under Plugins for that player, but
it never works. When I put in a time to turn on or off the display
nothing happens.
Am I misunderstanding something? What are these different states (on,
off, idle)?

Bart, can you elaborate on how you'd like the remote improved?
I sort of like the remote, because it is small and not overendowed with
buttons like many remotes. However I think it could be improved by
making it less symmetrical and making the buttons slightly larger and
backlit. The lack of symmetry seems important because people with
limited vision, or anyone using the remote in the dark, could pick it
up and know by feel which way up it is and where to find the buttons
they need. I know that when I pick up the remote for my amplifier I
will immediately be able to use it without looking at it, I can't say
the same for the Squeezebox remote. I realise that everyone uses their
Squeezebox in different ways and that not everyone uses it in dimmly lit
rooms, but a lot of people do, and a lot of people have limited vision,
so backlit buttons would be useful.
Having said that I like the limited number of buttons on the remote I
can hardly complain about the overloading! In general it works well,
but having Add and Play do different things depending on where you
are and how long you press it is just confusing when you first
encounter it (and when I show it to a friend) I know I can re-map the
buttons (I don't use Shuffle or Repeat, so I may do that)
I'm not complaining - I think my Squeezeboxes are fantastic, but I do
notice how much more work it is to use a remote that you need to look
at to use.

I find this a downside too, although getting rid of shelves of CDs
makes for a much tidier living room. As I ripped each CD I also
scanned the cover, printed it, and put it in a plastic CD envelope.
Now I have a large box of CD covers which I can flick through for
inspiration. It doesn't work really well because you can't scan the

I cannot use the browser for album view because it is so slow and
dependent on being able to use a mouse, also dependent on being in

Even when you remember where each button is (no backlighting, no logic
to the button arrangement) you still have to find each button which is
difficult as they are so small and the remote is so symettrical.
On the other hand I like having just a few, well thought out, buttons -
too many remotes have too many, underused, buttons.
I think you cannot please everyone - for example I never use the volume
on the Squeezebox, but I think most would agree that the buttons are too

Thanks - that is exactly what I need. And I use Musicmagic too (and it
is fantastic), so I shall investigate it's duplicate finder.

[slim] Re: Feature request: Brightness timer

what I would like is an ambient light sensor in the SB itself; I would
then like to be able to set the display brightness as a % gain on the
 light sensor's reading.
I don't just have problems with strong display intensity at night. In
the mornings I have got the sun right on the display, and I can't see a
 thing.
I have the same problem, and it is made worse by having to step between
all the intermediate levels of brightness to get the highest or lowest.

What about some fairly basic code which, knowing your time zone and
date, dims the display at night and brightens it 30 minutes after
sunrise?

[slim] Re: Who wants a learning SB remote?

2005-07-19 Thread Bart

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=15159

Question: Who wants a learning SB remote?

- I'd buy one, but no more than $20
- I'd buy one, but no more than $50
- I'd buy one, but no more than $100
- Nope, not interested at all
- Future versions of the SB should have this as standard

I see no need for a learning remote (unless maybe just a few
programmable buttons?), but I would like a better designed remote. I
like the simplicity of the existing remote and use most of the buttons,
unlike many remotes where many of the buttons are never used. However
the Slimdevices remote is too symetrical - picking it up in the dark it
is difficult to get a clue as to which way up it is, and the buttons are
rather small.
A redesign to make it bigger and better shaped to use without looking
would be welcome - but not more complicated just for the sake of it.

Shouldn't this option be freely available rather than an obscure

[slim] Re: Slimserver resource hog?

2005-05-11 Thread Bart

I am running an Athlon XP 3200 with 1GB RAM and a clean install
of WinXP Pro SP2. My library is 18,000+ tracks, 99% of them high
bitrate MP3s
I run Slimserver from the command line, using ActiveState Perl
When playing a track Task Manager shows the following:
perl.exe - MEM: 98,890 CPU: 0
(I am using the MusicMagicMixer integration and MusicMagicMixer.exe
shows MEM: 2,800 CPU: 0)

(If I try to run Slimserver.exe it puts the CPU up to 100% - I don't
know whether this will eventually go down to something sensible because
I have given up and just run it from the command line for now...)

[slim] Larger display (a la Roku)

2005-05-11 Thread Bart

I am getting older every day (aren't we all!) and my kitchen is quite
large (33ft at it's widest point), so sometimes I cannot read the
display on my Squeezebox, good though it is.
I see from the internal photos, that were recently published here, that
the VFD connects internally via a normal 14 or 16 way ribbon cable.
Is there a compatible larger VFD that I could use (perhaps with a
little soldering to make the infrared detector work)?
Or is there a plan to offer a larger display in a model in the future?

Ok, thanks for confirming that.
I have never loaded the plugin before but I would like

downloaded the Slimscrobbler plugin but couldn't get
it to work.
I will try again when I see that it is working.

[slim] Re: Fast forward/reverse and long recordings

2005-03-09 Thread bart maguire
I run into this problem a lot. I timeshift programs
every day and often want to skip a bit or pick up a
programme in the middle. With the Squeezebox I find
this impossible. With Winamp there is a slider which
acts as a progress bar but can also be picked up with
the mouse and slid. As you slide it the track
position indicator changes, so you can drop it pretty
much exactly where you want it.
Unfortunately the progress bar in Fishbone only acts
as a progress bar, as far as I can tell.
An option use the remote to jump +-5 or 10 (or
user-configurable) minutes would be a workable compromise.

[slim] Changing the function of press-and-hold Pause

2005-02-25 Thread bart maguire
Is it possible to change the function of the Pause
button on the remote control? Currently
press-and-hold Pause stops the playback immediately, I
would like it to stop after the current track
finishes. I can always press the Power button to get
it to stop immediately.

Oh, and looking through the documentation I see:
Press-and-Hold the PLAY button if you have Moodlogic
and Squeezebox will create a playlist based on the
currently displayed Song, Genre or Artist.
- this should now read MusicMagic or Moodlogic
