[slim] Re: How to start clean with 6.5? My library is hosed.

2006-09-25 Thread Dan Sully

Sue - to start from scratch:

Open task manager, and make sure that the following processes are not
running. If they are, stop them.

slim.exe
scanner.exe
mysqld.exe

Once that's done, remove SlimServer via the Add/Remove Programs Control
Panel.

If that doesn't work (or in addition to), remove the C:\Program
Files\SlimServer directory.

Just to be safe, reboot.

At that point, SlimServer is completely removed. There is a registry
entry for the service, but that won't affect these scanning issues you
are seeing.

This is likely a result of us moving our webserver yesterday.

There was a redirect put in place to send people that had the old DNS
to the new server. I'll postulate that the code that checks to see if

In any event, the redirect server is down now (as DNS has propagated).

Have set it to 0. Unfortunately, same essential problem. Scan stops
at 340 Albums, 609 songs (a seven song improvement), and 216 artists.

When it gets to these numbers, SS is no longer saying that it is
rescanning...

Very weird. Any thoughts?

First of all, try downloading the 6.2.2 nightly build, which has bug fixes
since the 6.2.1 official build. http://slimdevices.com/dev_nightly.html

Secondly, could you run slim.exe on the command line? Possibly with the
--d_itunes flag? Hopefully that will give some indication of what's
happening. Do you have any iTunes Music Store songs? Those won't show up in
SlimServer, and will affect the song count.

Thanks.

I'm running 6.5b1 (via new debian packages) on a Linux Kubuntu box.
Everything installed fine except that slimserver is not correctly
parsing the ID3 tags on about half of my mp3 files. I've got about 3000
tracks under No Artist/No Album.

This problem didn't exist under previous versions of slimserver

readable (ID3s) by my other MP3 players.

I'm not sure how to tell.

I would guess ID3v1 though. I primarily use Grip for ripping and it
looks like ID3v2 is an extra option that is off by default. Many of
these tracks were ripped years ago, and I doubt I would have enable
ID3v2 since I don't really know what the differences are.

Could you send me one of the files that has trouble? dan | at | slimdevices.com

I think I know what's going on here. I want to verify it with a test file,
then I'll put a fix in the next nightly.

2006-03-04 Thread Dan Sully

* Christopher Biscoe shaped the electrons to say...

I was an old SB2 user that eventually abandoned it because of chronic
issues with the box and the server software. This was about 9 months
ago. Recently, lured by both Squeezenetwork (generally) and Pandora
(specifically) I jumped back in and bought 2 lovely new black SB3s.
Connecting to the Squeezenetwork is a breeze and Pandora works
brilliantly.

Glad to have you back, Christopher!

Problem I am having, and it was an intermittent problem before that
seems to be worse now, is scanning. I have aa large CD collection
and about 2500 are ripped to two Buffalo SAN boxes (which I highly
recommend after being burned by LaCie, TWICE). When I scan, I end up
with 340 albums and 602 songs by 216 artists. Many albums are one or
two songs long, despite having the entire album available on the SAN.
My Itunes database is correct, and everything is fully playable off
of the Mac (that is, I have tested that the music is still there in
Itunes with success). To begin with, I have just instructed Slim
Server to reference my Itunes file, rather than going through the
trouble of mapping the drives in SS (although I can be persuaded
otherwise). Am running 6.2.1 Slim Server (which seems to be the
latest version, unless I have missed something on the slimdevices
website).

It appears to only apply to album titles. If this is new for 6.5, we
should probably also document differences between SlimServer versions
to show which are only beta. Beats the hell out of me why this was
needed, but I vaguely recall a forum thread about it.

Yes.. I remember the forum thread.. I resisted the initial usage, but I got
convinced. I'll need to go back and find it.

I'm thinking we should drop documentation of any tags that SlimServer
does _not_ support. E.g. Lyrics?

SlimServer does support Lyrics tags - which is why they're on the Wiki.

They show up on the songinfo pages.

Also, do we just document SlimServer's treatment of tags, or should
this document common usage. If SlimServer treats v2.2, v2.3 and v2.4
tags identically, there's no reason to separate them, even if 2.4 added
some new conventions.

Please feel free to split things up into separate pages. But I'd prefer to
have the version separation there for now.

Documentation of Ape tags would be welcome, although I suspect that
they may be treated identically to vorbis comments.

Does anyone actually use APE? And has a convincing argument for why it's
better than FLAC? Saving a few Kbytes per file isn't it.

Is there any way to get the wiki to accommodate wide tables? It's not

have the version separation there for now.

2.2 is different, but what about 2.3 and 2.4? If a tag new to 2.4 is
used in a 2.3 formatted id3 tag, will it be recognized by SlimServer?
If so, then there's no need to document them separately.

I haven't tested it, but it should recognize them.

Can we just assume that any tags appearing in freeform tagging systems
are treated identically? This gets back to my taggins system
convention vs. SlimServer convention question. If, for instance, a tag
normally seen in Ape files were to appear in a vorbis comment, I would
assume it will be recognized rather than ignored.

Yes, that is correct. All the freeform tagging systems are the same as FLAC.

It seems to me that the SlimServer.com page layout constrains the width
of the table. I think the page layout may also be what screws up the
text area input box.

Yeah - I need to talk to Dean about that.

Anyone feel like rewriting our mess of header tables to be CSS'd? :)

i'm on the same boat, tried a million executable + config combinations .
. . i vote for removing the wiki and conf entries until there is at
least basic support for shorten -- Shorten support is available for
the Windows version of slimserver is misleading. this was a selling
point for me.

Yeah, I'm also in the same leaky boat. I love the living crap out of
my SB3, but damn I wish it could play SHN. It's bad enough that the
music library scan finds the SHN files then won't play them - what a
tease!

The Shorten format doesn't allow us to stream the music on Windows. Because
it's closed source, we can't fix this. I believe I've removed the references
to it working on Windows.

The best I can suggest is to use Foobar2000 to convert the files to FLAC.

You'll then have fantastic metadata support available then.

I seem to have the same issue. My collection of recently ripped Chinese

I tried renaming some song DIRECTORY and FILENAMES to English and they
were imported and showed up with Chinese song names (due to the tags).

But that wasn't a practical solution for my whole collection. I hope

Can you please send one of the files with Chinese ID3 tags to dan | at |

This should work - we have a bunch of test files that do.

The thing that may not work is if the files have an old version of the ID3
tag that is craming Big5 or similar encoding into what is only an ISO-8859-1
space. Our Unicode code tries to guess, but it can only guess so well with
overlapping character sets unless the encoding is explicitly specified as in
ID3v2.4

Non-Latin characters in file names are supported if your Windows instance is
using another language entirely - such as Japanese. We've had reports of that
working. However, having non-latin file names in a latin (English, French,

If you're having duplicates issues and have playlists - please give that a try.

yay! I'm not senile!

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19638

It's probably a bit trickier: Windows, for example, doesn't usually
distinguish between Directory and DiReCtOrY, and Z:\MUSIC and
\\Server\Music may be the same but the server can't tell.

So the server is able to normalize directory/file case names so that they are
the same. I'm surprised to see issues regarding this if it's just case
issues. On the other hand - the second example is a lot harder to normalize.

If someone has a reproducable case, I can try and take a look.

Thanks

I created a new db. I updated dbcreate.sql with above. I imported the

improvement. But still. (And I also know that this is unsupported, so
don't bend over backwards to understand...)

One of the errors is data truncated for column 'bitrate'. Should this
variable be re-defined as well? Should I move to 6.5-branch instead?

bitrate needs that conversion too. thanks for the catch.

I checked in a possible fix for this earlier today. It's available via SVN

2006-01-23 Thread Dan Sully

* Greg Klanderman shaped the electrons to say...

Why can't slimserver just compare the directories that songs are in?
Don't put songs from different directories in the same album, and if
the artists on the songs within a directory are different, then treat
as a various artists album.

Unfortunately, everyone has a different theory on how to organize their
directories. We've seen some bizzare things, like putting all tracks from an
artist, no matter their album into the same directory. Tagging is a more
straightforward way of indicating what you want, and doesn't impact the
directory structure.

I don't doubt you've seen bizarre things, but it seems you can best
support the vast majority of users by looking at the directory. Why
not do that, and then have an option for those who feel the need to
store their files in incompatible ways?

Isn't there an albumid tag? Seems you could support that as an
alternative to using the directory. Would be so much cleaner.

There is - but that's the Greatest Hits problem. We do try and match by
directory first - the heuristics get pretty messy very fast.

See Slim/DataStores/DBI/DBIStore.pm - and sub _postAttributeCheck for more info.

But even as it is you can't represent what you want with tags alone.
You have to change at least three options from their defaults, and
possibly populate a list of common album names. Then you have to
add a non-standard ID3 tag iTunes invented and almost no software
supports to your music files, just to get reasonable behavior.

All it requires is the addition of the compilation flag, if that album is a
compilation. It may be a non-standard tag, but nothing about ID3 is
standard. It's much needed in my opinion. And the FLAC, Ogg, APE WMA people
have no issues because it's either free-form tagging, or the format has an
explict compilation tag.

And why are the defaults the way they are? Does anyone really want
two albums with the same name by different artists combined? Does
anyone want every track of a compilation album to be treated as a
separate album?

See above - we try to do directory matching first.
